How Lil Yachty Got His Second Act

By Jeff Ihaza

Until the pandemic, Lil Yachty never stopped to think about how quickly he became famous. “It was a full year from walking across the stage in high school to then I’m in this penthouse in midtown Atlanta , I got this G-wagon, put my mother in a house,” Yachty explains. “It’s a fast life. You not ever getting the chance to think about a lot of shit.”

Yachty’s 2016 hit “Minnesota,” which had the treacly energy of a nursery rhyme, earned the then-17-year-old the title “King of the Teens.” But since then, he’s become an elder statesman of a certain brand of young superstar — and something like the Gen Z answer to Diddy. He collaborated with brands like Nautica and Target; he appeared in the movie How High 2 ; he signed an endorsement deal with Sprite. Signees to his new label imprint, Concrete Boys, even get an iced-out chain.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Born Miles Parks McCollum, Yachty embodies many of the ways the music industry has changed in the past decade. He rose to fame on the internet and commands attention with or without new music. Over Zoom in March, he’s calm and reserved, pausing intently before he responds to questions. The youthful exuberance is still there, though. At one point, his mom, who lives nearby, calls to ask what he wants from the grocery store. “I need Pop-Tarts,” he says sweetly. “I really want them cinnamon-bun Pop-Tarts.”

He can afford lots of Pop-Tarts. Yachty reportedly made $13 million on endorsements in 2016 and 2017. (“Work hard, play hard,” he responds when asked about the number.) He spends more than $50,000 a month on various expenses, according to one recent headline. (“If anything I pay a little more. I have many assets and insurance, plus an elaborate payroll.”) He’s working on a Reese’s Puffs cereal collaboration, a film based on the card game Uno, and he was one of the first rappers to hop on the crypto craze, selling something called a “YachtyCoin” last December in an auction on the platform Nifty Gateway. According to a report from Coinbase, the token sold for $16,050. Yachty explains that when he was first discovered by Quality Control records founder Kevin “Coach K” Lee, “one of the biggest things he talked about was being a brand. Being bigger than just an artist — being a mogul.”

Why is everyone beefing with drake, rick ross' drake diss video is actually self-promo (and it's genius).

In fact, collaboration has come to be a useful tool for Yachty as he sheds the King of the Teens title for something more akin to a rap mogul. “I only work with people I have friendships with, who I really admire,” Yachty says. “And I love working with newer artists, up-and-coming artists.”  Within the world of hip-hop, Yachty has found for himself somewhere between a megastar and internet hero, and it would appear that he’s just settling in. “I just fuck with new talent. Not even like, ‘let me sign you, get under my wing,’ ” he explains. “Just ‘hey, I’ve been in this spot before. I know what that’s like, bada bing, bada boom.’ ”

Yachty started Concrete Boys last year. One of the first signees was his childhood friend Draft Day, who offers one of the more exciting features on Lil Boat 3, on the cut “Demon Time.” “I feel old sometimes,” Yachty admits. “I feel old as fuck when someone’s popping and I don’t know who they are. Which is rare, because I be on my shit.”

Yachty is also at the forefront of a new realm of social platforms, namely Twitch and Discord, that engender more direct communication within communities. Yachty frequently talks directly to fans on both platforms, and in April he collaborated with Discord on “sound packs,” which allowed users to replace the app’s normal notifications with sounds he created.

Kendrick did everything he needed to on ‘euphoria’, daniel radcliffe responds to j.k. rowling's anti-trans rhetoric: 'it makes me really sad', their song spawned an internet mystery. now they’re ready to tell their story.

I ask Yachty where he sees himself in five years. “Hopefully, a really successful actor,” he responds. “And with a bangin’ eight pack. I’ll probably cut my hair up, maybe a little beard. Real sex-symbol shit, you know what I’m saying?” For Yachty, who opened the door to a new brand of celebrity rapper, it doesn’t register as wishful thinking. His enduring celebrity is proof of what’s possible with a solid flow and internet savvy. “I just want to do everything. Because I’ve realized I can,” Yachty explains. “I’ve learned the power I have. The only thing stopping me is me, for real.”

Lil Yachty, Teezo Touchdown bring students from across New York to Block Party

In an interview with The Daily Orange before his Saturday performance, Teezo Touchdown said Lil Yachty was a source of encouragement for him in his career. During his brief stint in college, he remembered borrowing videos of one of Lil Yachty’s first press runs from the library to watch.

“To watch that, and then him being one of the first people to pour into me and to share the stage with him tonight, I’m honored to open up for him,” Touchdown said. “We’re gonna get the crowd right for him because he deserves it.”

On April 28, over 4,000 students came to JMA Wireless Dome to round out the end of the semester with University Union’s annual Block Party. This year’s artists were Lil Yachty , Teezo Touchdown , KARRAHBOOO and isoXO , with student DJ group FEƎM opening the event. The crowd was lively for the duration of the event, but it wasn’t until Lil Yachty took the stage that they went loose.

Before Block Party, UU kicked the day off with their second annual Block Darty on the quad. The event included free food, merchandise and live performances from Dreamer Isioma, renforshort and DWLLRS.

In a new move for UU events, students from other schools in New York including Le Moyne College, New York University and Ithaca College also came to take in the night of music alongside Syracuse University and SUNY ESF students.

FEƎM opened the event in the Dome. While the group of SU seniors recognized plenty of familiar faces in the crowd from shows on campus, this was the biggest set up the house collective has had the opportunity to participate in.

“It felt like we were people that snuck on stage,” said Dominic Brancoli, SU senior and member of FEƎM.

KARRAHBOO took the stage next. The Concrete Boys — Lil Yachty’s label — signee kept the crowd engaged while performing tracks including “Running Late.”

Along with songs from his discography like “how2fly,” Isoxo kept the crowd’s energy up by playing mixes of songs including “FE!N” by Travis Scott featuring Playboi Carti as well as “GATTI” by JACKBOYS.

As students waited for Teezo Touchdown to land on stage, “RUNITUP,” a song from Tyler The Creator’s album “Call Me if You Get Lost” featuring Teezo Touchdown, started playing.

As the chorus of the song kicked in, Teezo Touchdown, dressed in spiked shoulder pads and leather, ran onto the stage and started rapping along into his Morrisey-inspired microphone of roses.

After rapping over a portion of the song, he asked the crowd if he could play some new songs from his latest album “How Do You Sleep At Night?” and opened with “OK,” the first song from the album.

Through the rest of his set, he stomped on stage with his padded boots and interacted with the crowd as he performed more songs including “UUHH” and “5 O’Clock.”

“Syracuse, do you wanna dance?” he asked the audience before performing “MODERN JAM,” a song from Scott’s “UTOPIA” featuring Touchdown.

After Touchdown left the stage, the audience of thousands chanted “Yachty,” eager for him to make his arrival. At 9:50 p.m., the lights dimmed and members of the audience quickly took their phones out to record Lil Boat as “WE SAW THE SUN” from Lil Yachty’s 2023 album “Let’s Start Here.” played.

As the song transitioned into “drive ME crazy!,” which follows it on the album, the rapper, dressed in a white and black Yamaha jacket, approached the stage to a wave of cheers.

After he performed “A Cold Sunday,” Lil Yachty reminded the crowd that the night was just getting started.

“I’m trying to get y’all nice and toasty,” he said.

To create more activity during his set, he called for mosh pits multiple times, where students would come together for songs like “Flex Up,” “Pardon Me” and “Ice Tray”

Along with playing newer songs like “Slide” and “SOLO STEPPIN CRETE” through the night, Lil Yachty took the time to play his classics, including “Broccoli” and “I Spy.”

“I wanna hear you sing this sh*t if you remember it from day one,” he said before singing “One Night.”

After proclaiming that he wanted to end his set with a “bang,” Lil Yachty played “Poland” and “66.” Before leaving the stage, he thanked everyone for coming and wished students luck with finals.

“Syracuse, y’all gave me 1000% energy tonight,” he said. “Love y’all. I will be back.”

Lil Yachty performing at Coachella 2024.; Kendrick Lamar at the 65th Grammy Awards.

Accidents happen! Lil Yachty claims that he did not intend to link a tweet where a Drake fan account called out Kendrick Lamar for infidelity.

The Compton, Calif., rapper released his Drake-targeted diss record “ Euphoria ” on Tuesday (April 30) and called out the Toronto superstar for being a “deadbeat” father. Naturally, fans of the “Rich Baby Daddy” rapper weren’t pleased with the claim and recalled an admission he made on his 2022 album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers .

On the song “Worldwide Steppers,” he rapped, “The first time I f**ked a white b**ch, I was sixteen at the Palisades, fumblin’ my grades,” and “Next time I f**ked a white b**ch, was out in Copenhagen/ Good Kid, M.A.A.D City tour, I flourished on them stages.” He mentioned a conversation he had with his wife, Whitney Alford, about the situation as well: “Whitney asked did I have a problem/ I said, ‘I might be racist’/ Ancestors watchin’ me f**k was like retaliation.”

Suge Knight Crowns Kendrick Lamar "Round One" Winner Of Drake Beef After "Euphoria"

A Drake fan account posted a Genius lyric card from Kendrick Lamar’s “Euphoria” where he raps, “Y’all think all of my life is rap?/ That’s h** sh*t, I got a son to raise, but I can see you know nothin’ bout that.” In the caption, they asked, “So who was raising your child while you were out cheating on your wife with white women? @kendricklamar.”

These days, a large part of being a Hip-Hop fan is perusing artists’ social media activity. So, unsurprisingly, a music account discovered that Lil Yachty liked the tweet alluding to K. Dot’s infidelity. The act was perceived as him subtly going to bat for the Toronto superstar, with whom he has collaborated and developed a strong friendship over the last few years. Beyond that, Yachty himself was mentioned in “Euphoria” with the lines: “I’m allergic to the lame sh*t, only you like bein’ famous/ Yachty can’t give you no swag neither, I don’t give a f**k ’bout who you hang with.”

“Euphoria” was Kendrick Lamar’s response to Drake’s one-two punch of “ Push Ups ” and the now-deleted “ Taylor Made Freestyle ,” the latter of which featured modulated vocals from Tupac and Snoop Dogg. K. Dot kicked off this chapter of his feud with his former collaborator on Future and Metro Boomin’s “ Like That ” at the end of March.

Drake’s Friend Lil Yachty Backtracks After Liking Post Claiming Kendrick Lamar Cheated On His Fiancée ‘With A White Woman’

lil yachty on me

Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Yachty

After Kendrick Lamar set the world on fire by dropping a nearly 6-minute and 30-second diss record about Drake  early Tuesday morning (Apr. 30), X users noticed an interesting post under Lil Yachty’s likes.

What started as a rumored dispute, with Drake throwing a few subliminals Kendrick Lamar’s way, has escalated into a full-blown rap rivalry, with both artists making their targets abundantly clear. In his latest response, which has already amassed over seven million views within 24 hours, Kendrick Lamar accuses Drake of being an insecure culture vulture, deadbeat dad who is a “pathetic master manipulator,” among many (many) other things.

lil yachty on me

He also notes that Drake shouldn’t be allowed to say the n-word anymore, and the Toronto rapper tried to take legal action over K-Dot’s previous diss on the record “Like That.” Notably, in the second verse, Kendrick references Drake’s close friend and fellow musician, Lil Yachty , rapping,

“I’m allergic to the lame sh*t, only you like bein’ famous Yachty can’t give you no swag neither, I don’t give a f*ck ’bout who you hang with I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress Surprised you wanted that feature request You know that we got some sh*t to address I even hate when you say the word “n*gg*,” but that’s just me, I guess”

Well, it appears Lil Yachty heard the diss but seemingly wants nothing to do with the back-and-forth. The Georgia native recently liked a post on X that defends Drake’s alleged parenting style (or lack thereof) by questioning who was raising Kendrick’s son when he was (allegedly) cheating on his fiancée, Whitney Alford , “with a white woman.”

lil yachty on me

However, according to Lil Yachty , engaging with the shady post was a mistake. He claims,

“Sh*t was an accident lmao”

lil yachty on me

While Kendrick has alluded to cheating on his longtime partner in his latest studio album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” he apparently never shared the race of the woman (or women) he was purportedly involved with.
