Plano restaurant with funny name, Suburban Yacht Club, is now open
Chef brian luscher, of dallas restaurant the grape, created the socal-themed menu..
By Sarah Blaskovich

No, your yacht can’t tie up outside of Suburban Yacht Club in Plano. But almost everything else about it will make you feel like you’re in Southern California, with the wind in your hair, frozen cocktail in hand. There’s even a tiny, manmade body of water outside, at Granite Park. Sip enough rum and this Plano boardwalk might start to resemble Santa Monica Pier. Well, maybe.
Suburban Yacht Club opened Sept. 7, 2021 and offers a playful new place to soak up SoCal vibes without the plane ride.
This new “Best Coast”-themed restaurant has a menu to match the decor. Chef Brian Luscher, who owned and operated The Grape in Dallas for years , joined the 33 Restaurant Group team after The Grape shut down for good in 2019.

Suburban Yacht Club is Luscher’s first new restaurant menu since The Grape, and here, he seems to be having a lot of fun. Luscher’s team includes Dallas chef Daniel Pittman, who made great food at LUCK (Local Urban Craft Kitchen) in Trinity Groves before he left in 2019 .
Dinner probably starts with a cocktail, and the four frozen beverages like a Frojito or a Mangonada Margarita might hit the spot in the heat. Two shareable cocktails, priced at $35 and $40, come with fanfare: sparklers or flaming fruit. You probably need one.
33 Restaurant Group founder Preston Lancaster, who operates six other restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs, grew up in North Texas but now lives in San Diego. Many potential restaurant customers around here are doing the opposite: Toyota’s headquarters, just on the other side of the Dallas North Tollway, brought thousands of Californians to Texas in 2017.
Lancaster and his team also operate Union Bear Brewing Co., which is a few doors down in Plano’s Granite Park. Their other restaurants are Cadillac Pizza Pub and The Yard, both in McKinney; Taverna Rossa in Plano and Southlake; and Heritage Pizza and Taproom in The Colony.
At Suburban Yacht Club, Luscher says he was inspired by the food in Southern California, which tends to be simple, sometimes healthy, and often seafood-focused.
“I’ve always loved going to the West Coast because there’s a high level focus on ingredients — but also still cheeseburgers and tacos,” Luscher says.
“If you take yourself too seriously, it doesn’t work.”
Appetizers include flash-fried calamari, chile butter grilled shrimp with chimichurri, and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos elote. The citrus-cured ceviche is one of Luscher’s favorite dishes. The spicy tuna tostada has some zing from a drizzle of spicy chile mayo.
Most customers might be drawn to the “streetside” section of the menu for tacos, like a shrimp option with slaw and mangos, or the beer-battered fish. The mushroom and poblano rajas taco, a vegetarian dish, is a delight even for carnivores.
Those ditching the calorie counting might love the short rib quesabirria taco. Like the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos elote, SYC’s birria tacos are indulgent and on-trend.
The last time you had a burger from Luscher might’ve been The Grape’s cheeseburger, which Texas Monthly named the best burger in the entire state in 2009 . So Luscher added a cheeseburger to his menu at SYC, and even though it isn’t an essential menu item like shrimp tacos and ceviche, it’s inevitable that burger lovers will show up just to try it.
The Boardwalk Beach Burger was designed to taste like a backyard burger, the chef says: American cheese, a ketchup-mustard-mayo sauce blend, and lettuce, tomato and pickle on the side.
He says of the whole menu: “It’s refreshing for me, to not have to chef it all up.”
Lancaster says the name, Suburban Yacht Club, “started as a little bit of a joke,” he says. “It made us laugh.”
But the menu and the decor aren’t over-themed: Nobody’s wearing captain’s hats or telling pirate jokes.
Those in-the-know have been waiting on this new restaurant since May 2020, when it should have opened if not for the coronavirus pandemic. It’s 16 months late, but this laidback seafood spot, landlocked among a bunch of California transplants, feels right on time.
Suburban Yacht Club is at 5872 TX-121, Plano (at the Dallas North Tollway and Highway 121). Dinner only, at first, starting Sept. 7, 2021. Lunch comes later.

Brian Luscher’s Suburban Yacht Club Brings SoCal Vibes to Plano’s Granite Park
Elaborate cocktails and boardwalk fare make for an immersive north texas destination.
A fter The Grape, an iconic Dallas spot in Lower Greenville, shuttered in 2019 , co-owner and chef Brian Luscher set his sights on the suburbs. He joined 33 Restaurant Group (based in Frisco), known for Plano’s Union Bear Brewing Co., McKinney’s Cadillac Pizza Pub, and more, debuting Suburban Yacht Club at The Boardwalk at Granite Park in Plano just a month ago. A coastal cantina inspired by the boardwalks of Southern California, the new restaurant features elaborate tropical cocktails and delicious bites.
When you walk inside of the space, it feels as if you hopped into a restaurant off the pier. There are a few large screens displaying ocean settings and a breezy indoor/outdoor arrangement with massive garage door-style windows. But it’s the moment you see the tropical drinks that you feel fully transported.
From four kinds of frozen cocktails, including a Mangonada Margarita and Cuba Libre, to watermelon basil vodka drinks served in an inflatable flamingo (the Basic Beach), the drink menu has a lot to explore. I opted for the Tiki Tai, a refreshing twist on a Mai Tai with Plantation Pineapple and Kuleana Nanea Rum, orange curacao, orgeat, and pandan foam. The Almost Paradise was also a favorite with tequila, gin, grapefruit, coconut syrup, orgeat, and purple pea flower. Another best-seller is the Seafoam Surfer, Suburban Yacht Club’s blue-hued take on a margarita.
If you come in with a group, there are two “Scorpion Bowls” that come with all of the bells and whistles for a good time. Options include Captain Ron’s Punch with rum and Weekend at Bernie’s, a tequila-based drink.
The food menu at Suburban Yacht Club is also vast, so I’ll narrow it down with some favorites. Definitely start with the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Elote. Paired with the SoCal Coastal Ceviche, both are delicious and won’t ruin your appetite for mains. The “Bowls and Baskets” portion of the menu is inspired by dishes you’ll find walking along any beach or boardwalk in Southern California. A beach burger, fish sandwich, shrimp burrito are just a few suggestions. We mixed and matched tacos because there are so many intriguing options on the menu including a short rib quesabirria, pork carnitas, and Baja bbq chicken. But it was the Baja beer-battered fish tacos that I couldn’t put down.
Lastly, be prepared if you order the pineapple upside-down cake. It is humongous, and it was so good that we finished it all. We left the restaurant very full, but happily so.

Suburban yacht club, the new coastal cantina in plano.
We visited the new Suburban Yacht Club in Plano and felt like we had been transported to a beachside boardwalk in California! With a Baja inspired menu and tropical cocktails, this new coastal cantina is a must-visit! Although we’re far from the coast, the restaurant is located at the Boardwalk Granite Park in Plano, which backs right up to the water and is our own little oasis right in the suburbs!
Updated January 2022
The menu is seafood heavy with a lot of healthy options too! You’ll find tons of Baja classics like ceviche, fish tacos, protein bowls and a grilled fish sandwich. The standout items to us were the shrimp burrito and little gem salad! Fun fact: the chef behind the menu is Brian Luscher of the beloved Greenville Ave restaurant, The Grape!
Suburban Yacht Club
When you sit down the first thing you’ll experience is what they call a “toast to the coast”, which is a refreshing fruit flavored aqua fresca that they bring to every table. It will instantly put you in a tropical state of mind. The cocktail menu follows the coastal theme with names like Basic Beach and Seafoam Surfer. They also have a list of delicious frozen drinks too!
Although the drinks and the food were 10/10, the interior might have been our favorite part. There was no detail left untouched. From cane accents and natural wood details to blue leather bar stools and fun wallpaper, everywhere you turn is an insta-worthy moment! And the expansive patio that looks out onto the boardwalk for water views!
HOURS + HAPPY HOUR
They are open Sun-Mon from 11am-10pm and Tues-Sat 11am-11pm! Make sure to stop by Mon-Fri from 3pm-6pm for $2 off house wine and draft beer, $5 Socorro and Tito’s, fish tacos and ceviche and $6 house margs, queso and elote!

...the grilled fresh catch sandwich was "chile-dusted" but it was rather bland & spiceless. A cajun, blackened option would improve this item (if I were the chef.) The matchstick fries were a waste of space on the plate. Some were overcooked, some were OK, all... were too small to handle. The summer slaw was good. The red cabbage on the (Streetside) grilled fresh catch had a very odd, bitter sauce on it - had to scrape it off to continue eating, while the mushroom & poblano rajas was excellent as-is. Our waitress had recommended it. Service was friendly & helpful. More
We went here thinking of seafood and they do have seafood but it is unlike your standard seafood place. This has an eclectic, Mexicanish menu. Everything was nicely presented and very tasty. Most dishes had some element of spiciness but they will prepare it without... if needed. Seems a little pricey for what you get. More
It is decorated for Christmas and has holiday themed drinks. I had the Crispy Grouper Sandwich that comes with French fries. The sandwich was delicious. The fries were crispy.

A new restaurant with a large outdoor dining space is set to bring Southern Californian food truck-style fare to Plano later this summer.
The cheekily named Suburban Yacht Club, from 33 Restaurant Group , is expected to open in June 2021 on The Boardwalk at Granite Park. That’s the same restaurant group behind Union Bear Brewing Company and Cadillac Pizza Pub in McKinney, Taverna Rossa Craft Pizza in Plano, and Heritage Pizza in The Colony.
Instead of pizza, Suburban Yacht Club will instead focus on Southern Californian comfort food, including crispy pork carnitas, quesabirria, fish tacos, and ceviche, as well as food truck and street food-inspired dishes like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos elote. The kitchen will be run by Chef Brandon Pappalardo, formerly of The Grape, with influence from 33 Restaurant Group culinary director (and former Grape owner) Brian Luscher.
The bar menu takes inspiration from topical flavors, and will feature frozen cocktails, sangria and a signature Scorpion Bowl, a shareable tiki drink usually made with a mix of light and dark rums and pineapple juice. With its location on the boardwalk, the restaurant will face the small lake at Granite Park, adding to the suburban tiki vibe with a spacious outdoor patio.
Suburban Yacht Club will be located at 5872 TX-121 in Plano, and already has a Facebook page . Stay tuned for more details closer to the restaurant’s June opening.

“LOVE this location! It’s a one-stop shop. Tons of restaurant options and great coffee! The Boardwalk makes it a perfect date spot too.”

“One of THE best places in the Dallas – Fort Worth area! Variety of food options are available. This is my second visit in a week and I am absolutely loving it! Aura is amazing, super fancy, and lively even on weekdays. The biscuit bar is my favorite, it serves great cocktails and quick bites like totes and yum biscuits. One can easily spend an hour or so eating, chit-chatting. Plenty of seating spaces available.”
“Love the outdoor atmosphere and scenery. Great choice of eateries.”
“Great place off the freeway. Lots of dining options. The green belt is perfect to walk after stuffing your face. Parking is readily available and close to the shopping space. Definitely check it out!”
“This place was outstanding. Great food, great people, our Waitress was super nice, not to mention the atmosphere, which is really nice. One heck of a beer selection, if you like that sort of thing, which we do. They had A French Toast Stout my wife and I had, that was to die for. You should check it out. 5 stars all the way. I had their classic burger and almost couldn’t finish it… Man, I’m full!”
“Plenty of open-door seating, walkways, and a play area for young children. All the restaurants along this boardwalk have outdoor seating and you have a grand view of the well-kept lake. Also, a huge bonfire to keep warm in the winter! Cute date spot, family hangout, or a place to chill with friends!”

Suburban Yacht Club serves up SoCal eats
S uburban Yacht Club doesn’t feel suburban — on the edge of the Boardwalk at Granite Park’s waterfront patio area with floor-to-ceiling windows and rattan chairs, it’s an ode to San Diego’s beachy vibe.
Its six-week holiday pop-up was as trendy as something you’d find in Dallas’ Lower Greenville with custom cocktails in Christmas-themed ceramic drinkware with hand-rolled tamales and fresh churros. It was worth waiting in line for.
A 33 Restaurant Group concept, the Cal-Mex restaurant is a standout among the pizzerias and Union Bear breweries that make up the group’s lineup.
Suburban Yacht Club is solely inspired by founder Preston Lancaster’s time in the San Diego area where he attended college and met his now-wife.
You’ll see it in the menu. Though it’s SoCal inspired, this isn’t your typical beach hut-themed eatery.
“It’s a getaway to the coast. It’s the water crashing and relaxing. It’s absolutely gorgeous out there,” Luscher says. “From tacos to seafood to simple items like burgers, they’re all just so fresh and thoughtfully executed, like my culinary love affair with California in general. We wanted to bring back that, embrace the tide.”
“The menu is a conglomeration of seafood and Cal-Mex, with dishes like a crispy grouper sandwich, a California classic burrito or a mix-and-match taco plate. Other options include del Mar shrimp, Baja beer-battered fish, carne asada and quesabirria.”
“Right before COVID, we had plans for Suburban Yacht Club, but as everyone was impacted by everyone’s life, we were impacted by COVID and quarantines,” Brian Luscher, director of culinary operations for 33 Restaurant Group, says. “It was always going to have a foot in seafood, and we started thinking about it more and what post-COVID guests would want, we wanted to create a getaway.”
Only one thing distracts from the ambiance — the weather. Throughout winter, North Texas’ brutal oscillating seasons don’t always leave room for patio afternoons.
SYC had a fix with a culinary twist — a holiday pop-up. For the holiday season, Suburban Yacht Club turned to Suburban Sleigh Club, fit with holiday décor from floor to ceiling and a holiday menu that had guests lining up out the door to get some homemade tamales and Instagrammable cocktails.
“[I’d ask customers], ‘How did you hear about us?’ and they’re like ‘TikTok,’” Close says.
Building on that momentum, Suburban Yacht Club just unveiled a new cocktail menu with one-of-a-kind glassware shaped like tiki statues, luau pigs, a shark and a pufferfish.
“We want to create that same sort of energy we had behind the pop-up, because the pop-up was so dope,” Close says. “While we want to have really high quality, amazing cocktails and amazing food, we want [customers] to be able to post it and share it with people.”
Fresh juices are incorporated into many of the drinks, like the tropical Coronado Campfire, which features Mezcal Verde Amarás, lime, lemon grass and hibiscus salt, or the Tiki Tai, a Bacardi Cuatro, orange Curacao, orgeat, passion fruit, lime and tiki bitters bring in fresh juice and a beach feel.
It’s not just fruity drinks, Close emphasizes.
The Pick Your Poison, which features several of 33 Restaurant Group’s own liquors from its barrel program, gives guests the option of a stirred Old Fashioned “your way” with Ral McCoy 12-year rum, 33RG Corazon Reposado Tequila, 33RG Lip Service Rye or Ilegal Añejo Mezcal.
Above all, the SYC team emphasizes that the restaurant isn’t just for sunny days on the patio — the boardwalk getaway is open year-round.
“It’s not just about the food. It’s not just about the chef. It’s not about the décor or the staff or the views. It’s not just about the bar program, it’s everything together,” Luscher says. “That makes the experience, and then when you’re at ease, everything feels comfortable. That’s what we’ve been trying to do.”
