What's the difference between RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and RYA Yachtmaster Coastal?

04 March 2016

The RYA Yachtmaster qualification has long been recognised by many as the premium sailing qualification for the experienced leisure sailor. In recent times, the Yachtmaster qualification has been further defined and is now split into three subsections, namely Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean. Unlike the RYA Day Skipper qualification, all three qualifications are gained through external examination.

The holder of a Yachtmaster Coastal qualification should be competent to skipper a yacht of up to 24 metres LOA in waters up to 20 miles from a safe haven. A Yachtmaster Offshore is qualified to skipper a vessel of the same size up to 150 miles from a safe haven. Yachtmaster Ocean extends the Yachtmaster Offshore qualification and qualifies the holder to skipper a vessel of the same size and up to 200gt anywhere in the World.

As one would expect, each examination requires that the candidate have a minimum level of experience prior to the examination. Prior to the Yachtmaster Coastal examination , a candidate must have a minimum of 30 days at sea, with 2 days as skipper and at least 800 miles logged, including 12 night hours. If you hold the Coastal Skipper course certificate already then this is reduced to 20 days at sea with 2 days as skipper, 400 miles logged and 12 night hours. Half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters.

To qualify to undertake the Yachtmaster Offshore examination , you must have a minimum of 50 days at sea, 2,500 miles logged, including at least 5 passages over 60 miles measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages. The candidate must have 5 days experience as skipper. At least half this mileage and passages must be in tidal waters. All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.

In both instances you will also need to hold a GMDSS short range radio certificate.

For advice on what examination you should be studying for, call our senior instructor and RYA Yachtmaster Instructor for a chat on [email protected] or call 07925 784407.

Chairman of the Yachtmaster Qualification Panel, James Stevens looks back at half a century of the Yachtmaster qualification

rya meaning yacht

The RYA started examining Yachtmaster candidates in 1973 but in fact the very first Yachtmaster certificates were awarded much earlier. In 1938 at the request of the Admiralty, the Board of Trade began to hold examinations for Yachtmasters primarily for Royal Navy reservists but also for amateur yacht skippers. It was prescient of the Admiralty to consider a military need for a fleet of competent yachtsmen as that is exactly what was required two years later at Dunkirk.

In the early 1970s the RYA took over the administration of the exam after a protracted negotiation led by Commander Bill Anderson, who had recently left the Royal Navy and had been appointed RYA Cruising Secretary. It was an innovative idea for a sports governing body to run a Department for Transport test but under Bill’s leadership it became a gold standard for amateur and professional yacht skippers. The first RYA yachtmaster certificate was issued in 1973 on behalf of the RYA and the Board of Trade.

To support the training for the exam the RYA introduced a series of courses taught at recognised practical and shorebased schools, the latter mainly local authority evening classes. Prior to this, several organisations, notably the armed forces, had run their own courses and assessments but Bill convinced them they would all benefit from a national programme. For 50 years the RYA cruising scheme has provided knowledge to thousands of sailors.

History of RYA training

The Board of Trade Yachtmaster exam was an oral test only. During the 1970s RYA candidates for Yachtmaster Offshore could take a practical course followed by an oral test or be examined directly with a practical assessment.

A mileage requirement was introduced. Assessments for the lower level of Coastal Skipper (now Yachtmaster Coastal) remained as an oral test following a course until the mid 1980s. Subsequently all offshore and coastal skipper candidates had to pass a practical exam as they do now and the mileage and experience requirements were increased.

The Yachtmaster Ocean exam has remained as an oral test following an ocean passage. RYA instructors and examiners are qualified following a training and assessment course. The RYA also publishes books on every aspect of the syllabus and many other nautical subjects, and has become Europe’s largest nautical publisher.

In 1984 the British barque Marques sank off Bermuda during a Tall Ships Race with the loss of 19 lives. In response, the Board of Trade’s successor, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) introduced a code of practice for equipment and stability for sail training vessels and sailing school yachts. Later this was extended to all small commercial vessels.

In 1976 the powerboat training scheme was introduced

Mandatory qualification

Commercial Yachtmaster qualifications, which were suggested by the RYA, were incorporated into the Code. Before this time there was no legal requirement for skippers to be qualified for carrying up to 12 paying passengers on yachts under 24m. In the yachting sector the Code made little difference to the accident rate, as most professionals already held a Yachtmaster certificate, but it did have an impact on sea angling and other commercial activities.

Professional skippers take the same practical Yachtmaster test as amateurs but in addition attend a sea survival course, have a medical fitness examination and must pass an online test on the rules and regulations.

In spite of the RYA’s position as the provider of compulsory certificates for commercial skippers, it has successfully campaigned against the introduction of mandatory licensing for recreational boat users.

In 202 Princess Anne presented the first ‘Yachtmaster of the Year’ award

Before 2002 exams were almost always held in the UK but in response to demand, the RYA expanded the scheme worldwide, recognising training centres and examining Yachtmasters in the Mediterranean, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Caribbean and USA. Currently there are 336 centres offering courses in 37 countries.

The word Yachtmaster, for training and exams, was trademarked by the RYA throughout the world and the certificates, which looked similar to those of the Merchant Navy were redesigned to include anti-fraud features.

RYA Yachtmaster rapidly became the world leader for yachting qualifications. Currently just over half the 3,500 candidates examined annually are non-British citizens. The MCA introduced manning regulations for yachts over 200 tons, the Large Yacht Code and RYA Yachtmaster was chosen as a pre-entry qualification. About 20% of Yachtmaster candidates progress to these MCA certificates.

Revisions underway

From the RYA’s point of view, the challenge of administering the Yachtmaster exam is to ensure the standard is the same all over the world. Examiners and instructors are updated regularly and reassessed at sea every five years. An independent quality assurance company, The Leadership Factor, calls 50 candidates a month and asks them about their experience of the exam. Examiners and the RYA receive these reports, which record exactly what the candidate said about their exam and examiner. A summary of the results is published on the RYA website and shows a high level of satisfaction, even from the fails.

rya meaning yacht

A young James Stevens runs a Yachtmaster Instructor course

A joint RYA MCA committee, the Yachtmaster Qualification Panel, oversees standards and the syllabus and can, after a hearing, withdraw qualifications for a period of time, usually between six months and 10 years after which the exam may be retaken. There are usually no more than two hearings a year and they often follow a serious accident such as loss of a vessel or a fatality.

In 2023 a Yachtmaster offshore candidate would recognise many of the subjects in the 1970s syllabus. Navigation, tides, pilotage, weather, boat handling and passage making are all still there, but today’s candidate is, of course, expected to be proficient with GPS and modern techniques.

The syllabus is regularly updated and there is a major revision underway. Yachts and navigation have changed dramatically, so it is important the RYA is not teaching the history of yachting.

Yachtmaster Offshore: When, Why, and How

In a seafarer’s career, there comes the time when Yachtmaster ticket becomes either a necessity, or the next logical step in professional development. No matter what the reason for the course is, Yachtmaster Offshore requires a thorough preparation and planning as well as some prior knowledge and experience.

  • When am I ready to take the course?

The candidate’s eligibility for Yachtmaster Offshore program is defined by a number of requirements. First and foremost, the logged sea time must show a minimum of 2500 nautical miles, about half of which should be in tidal waters. There is a huge debate as to what tidal waters are, and the RYA leaves it to the Yachtmaster candidate to decide whether the passage they undertook happened in a tidal area. The definition offered by the RYA is as follows:

An area is deemed tidal if published stream, current or tidal range data is available, the influence of which is significant enough to require the effects to be taken into account to plan and execute a safe and efficient passage .

But even if the decision to call experience tidal is the candidate’s, the RYA wisely warns that the final judgement will be made by the examiner and recommends to list only those miles that can be backed up with evidence. The qualifying sea time should be gained on motor vessels if the candidate applies for Yachtmaster Offshore Motor license. Sail miles do not count.

The RYA also sets a requirement as to the number of qualifying passages. As defined by the Association, ‘a passage is a non-stop voyage from a departure port / safe haven to a destination port / safe haven ’. For the Yachtmaster Offshore , there must be a minimum of 5 passages over 60 nm each; 2 of those passages should be overnight and 2 when the candidate acted as a skipper. The skipper, as understood by the RYA , is a person nominated and responsible for the planning and execution of a passage including vessel and watch management . It’s important that throughout the 60-mile passage there occurs no change of skippers; otherwise, the passage cannot be deemed as qualifying.

Proper understanding of the skipper’s role is vital for ticking the box of another requirement – 5 days on board acting as a skipper. A day in this case is a period of 8 consecutive hours, and the majority of them should be at sea . In every 24 hours, Yachtmaster candidate can have only one qualifying day onboard.

Last but not least, the RYA’s Yachtmaster Offshore exam pre-requisites put some restrictions as to the tonnage and length: days on board and miles should be gained on vessels up to 500 gt and less than 24 meters LOA.

  • When is the best time to take the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore course?

The full program – RYA Yachtmaster Offshore theory and RYA Yachtmaster Practical – takes 10 days to complete; the exam is usually scheduled right after, and candidates need to allow 2 days for it. With the sea, winds, and weather being unpredictable, to the candidates coming from abroad we advise to add an extra day before taking flights back home. Thus, the course is quite a commitment, and most seafarers take it during low Med season. Our Yachtmaster Offshore course is scheduled every month from December throughout April to give options to potential candidates.

  • Why take the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore?

Yachtmaster is not for beginners. Commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence entitles its holder to master a yacht of up to 200 gt, and that is a big responsibility. That said, one of the reasons to get Yachtmaster is to advance the qualifications from entry to higher level including MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) or Chief Mate, for which Yachtmaster Offshore CoC is among the required documents. Yachtmaster Offshore Shore-based (theory) certificate is another pre-requisite to apply for the OOW, and it has to be sent along with STCW and other records as a part of the Notice of Eligibility.

In a scheme of RYA training , Yachtmaster Offshore is preceded by RYA Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper, which allow to navigate 20 and 60 nautical miles offshore accordingly. With Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications, it is possible to skipper a cruising yacht up to 150 miles from harbour, so recreational boaters can have larger areas to explore and longer distances to cover.

  • How to apply for Yachtmaster Offshore Program?

If you believe you are ready and meet the pre-requisites mentioned above and outlined on our website , your first step is to get in touch with us by email, phone, or through contact form . Once we receive your enquiry, we will email to you Sea Time Summary and Self-Evaluation forms to fill out, which we will then forward to our instructor to confirm your eligibility. If you are eligible for the course, we will proceed with course booking and securing your place on the training.

Some important things to remember: the candidates for the training should hold a valid Elementary First Aid certificate . For the STCW EFA , it should be issued within the last 5 years, for the RYA First Aid - within the last 3 years. VHF Marine Radio certificate can be offered as a part of Yachtmaster Offshore package , but if you already hold the certificate, we can offer a 100 euros reduction.

Our next Yachtmaster Offshore session starts on the 6 th of December. Click here for more dates.

What is an RYA Yachtmaster?

The RYA Yachtmaster certificate of competence, your driving license, so to speak, is the aim of most skippers who are looking for reassurance that they have met the highest of standards. The RYA Yachtmaster is a highly regarded qualification and is respected around the world.

Becoming an RYA Yachtmaster allows the holder to work in the maritime industry as a professional skipper, Superyacht Crew, RYA instructor, plus so much more.

As a professional skipper, you can take charge (skipper) of a vessel up to 24 meters in length on a coastal, offshore, or ocean passage, depending on the qualification achieved. Qualifying as a Yachtmaster is a gateway to employment as a professional skipper. It shows that you are an experienced and competent skipper.

What-is-RYA-Yachtmaster

Becoming a Yachtmaster requires no format training, provided you have the correct experience and sea time, you can put yourself forward for the exam. You will need to provide your own boat and crew of course. You can  contact the RYA  who can put you in touch with an RYA Yachtmaster examiner.

Most people choose complete some training before sitting the RYA Yachtmaster exam. There is a structured route from beginner to RYA Yachtmaster so getting your Yachtmaster

Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore or Ocean

There are three qualification paths depending on whether you like to potter around the coast or sail across an ocean.

Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate

The Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate is for anyone who sail in coastal or protected waters, say no more than 20 miles from the coast. If you would like to learn more about navigation, sailing at night, rules of the road, safety, mooring, pilotage, and passage planning then the Yachtmaster Coastal is for you.

Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate

The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence has been the certificate that most people gravitate to. A Yachtmaster Offshore will have all the knowledge of Yachtmaster Coastal but would also have extensive experience crewing and skippering offshore. Skippers who want confirmation they have the experience and competence to take a yacht offshore choose this option. Once qualified as a Yachtmaster, the certificate allows the holder to skipper a vessel up to 150 miles from shore. The Yachtmaster Offshore is the gateway to employment, most employers ask for the Offshore or Ocean qualification.

Using a Sextant for Yachtmaster Ocean

Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate

You would sit your Yachtmaster Ocean exam if you wanted to sail a yacht around the world. The main difference between Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean is Celestial Navigation. Celestial Navigation for Yachtmaster Ocean is the knowledge to navigate by the sun and stars. The theory being, if you lose all your electronic equipment on board, you can fix your position using a  sextant .

To sit the Yachtmaster Ocean oral exam you would have already passed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam. In addition to the knowledge gained as a Yachtmaster Offshore you are required to complete an ocean passage of more than 600 miles. During the ocean passage will need to have the ability to use a sextant to fix your position.

Yachtmaster Power or Sail?

You can qualify as a Yachtmaster Power or Yachtmaster Sail, depending on what type of boat you like to spend your time on.

Working as a professional Yachtmaster

As mentioned above once you have qualified as an RYA Yachtmaster then you are able to seek work as a professional skipper. There are hundreds of qualified skippers out there that have turned their passion into a job.

The Yachtmaster Offshore certificate, Power or Sail is now considered necessary if you are looking for a job as a Lead Deckhand on a  Superyacht .

Becoming a Yachtmaster

What is an rya yachtmaster offshore exam.

Patrick Maflin

The RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is a much sought after qualification for skippers.

This qualification is respected worldwide.

One will be able to acquire the RYA Yachtmaster Certificate if they are able to demonstrate that they have sufficient sea-time, experience and certification in order to sit for an exam.

There are also courses that can help one to be properly prepared for the exam.

Sea Time Experience

Course duration, course content, converting from offshore sail to offshore power, qualifying passages, all my sea time was on superyachts over 24m - is that ok, how to log miles for your rya yachtmaster exam, do i need any first aid qualifications, what about commercial endorsement, stcw basic safety training endorsement, is rya yachtmaster theory required, how do i become a yacht captain, do rya yachtmaster qualified yacht captains make much money, rya yachtmaster offshore course overview.

Yacht Captain During Exam

Sea time experience is one of the most important prerequisites.

You would need to have completed the following within the last ten years:

  • At least 2500 miles logged.
  • Spent 50 days at sea on yachts of up to 500GT.
  • At least half the sea time must have been spent in tidal waters.
  • Have completed five passages of over 60 miles, of which two passages were as a skipper, and two carried out at night.
  • Have at least five days experience working as a skipper.
  • Hold a valid First Aid Certificate. In the case of a STCW Elementary First Aid it needs to have been issued within the last five years, whereas in the case of an RYA First Aid it needs to be issued within the past three years.
  • Be in possession of a GMDSS short-range VHF radio certificate.

The course duration is generally 5 days, including the exam.

The course content will comprise key areas that will allow one to be properly prepared for the exam.

The instructor will focus on areas where one needs to improve.

Notably, night sailing and blind navigation will be practiced.

There will be an overview of the lights, signals and collision regulations, among others.

Since different ports and harbours will be visited, you will be able to get tested in different waters, and your strengths and weaknesses will be better tackled in preparation for the exam.

The Yachtmaster Offshore Exam itself will take anywhere between 8 to 12 hours for a single candidate, or between 10 to 18 hours for two.

Candidates will be met onboard by examiners who will outline what will happen during the test.

Tasks will be set for the candidates to demonstrate their abilities as skippers of offshore cruising yachts.

Candidates should be well prepared as questions on any part of the syllabus can be asked at any stage.

Examiners will be independent assessors who evaluate candidates on behalf of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency .

rya meaning yacht

In order to convert from Yachtmaster offshore sail to Offshore Power the following will need to have been completed within the past 10 years:

  • At least 1250 miles on a vessel that was between 7m and 24m in length.
  • Have spent 25 days living onboard.
  • Have spent 3 days as a skipper.
  • Have carried out 3 passages exceeding 60 miles, of which one was as a skipper and one overnight.

There are a number of rules that need to be followed when it comes to passages that can be deemed as qualifying.

An applicant will need to have completed at least five passages which exceed 60 miles.

These five passages must have been completed on a vessel that is less than 24 metres in length.

Two of these passages need to have been overnight passages.

In addition, two of them will need to have been where one acted as a skipper.

It’s important to mention that a 60 mile qualifying passage is one where the voyage has been non-stop from the departure port A to departure port B, where A and B cannot be the same place.

The 60 mile distance has to be measured as a straight line from A to B.

The RYA will accept passages that were on board yachts over 24m in length.

However, only 50% of the qualifying sea time can be derived from such passages.

Thus, not more than 2500 miles in all, and one would need to provide a testimonial or a discharge book to confirm them.

The remaining 50% of the qualifying sea time must have been carried out on vessels which ranged between 7m and 24m.

Since so much importance is placed on passages, it’s crucial to record the miles.

Recording miles can be carried out in a RYA logbook G158, or using an Excel spreadsheet.

It’s also good to have a CV detailing one’s sea time.

When logging miles it’s important to take note of key details, including the dates of the passage or trip, the miles sailed on the various passages, the name and type of vessel, and any night hours.

Yes, you must have a valid first aid qualification in order to sit for the Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore exam.

There are different types of first aid qualifications that are accepted, including:

  • The RYA First Aid
  • The STCW Elementary First Aid
  • Seafish First Aid

It’s common to choose to commercially endorse the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore exam qualification once the exam has been successfully completed.

In this case, besides holding a valid first aid and VHF certificate, one will also need an STCW or RYA Sea Survival certificate, as well as either an ENG1 medical certificate or an ML5 medical certificate .

One will also need to complete the RYA’s online PPR course.

Subsequently, one can apply for commercial endorsement through the RYA.

Following STCW Basic Safety Training , the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate can be endorsed in order to allow the holder to be a skipper both on commercial as well as privately owned vessels.

This includes those exceeding 24m in length.

Yes, in order to become an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore it is highly recommended to know specific aspects of navigation and being able to handle a vessel at sea.

Thus, following a Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course is advisable to improve one’s abilities and competence.

This will inevitably improve one’s chances of successfully achieving the RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.

Becoming a yacht captain takes several years of training, experience and qualifications.

Like many careers, you’ll need to start life on a vessel working your way up.

From humble beginnings like being a deckhand to a junior crew member, the journey towards becoming a yacht captain takes years of dedication and hard work.

Our guide to becoming a yacht captain explains this process in greater detail.

Yes, the potential to make a very lucrative income is high.

A lesser experienced yacht captain can expect to make in the region of $48,000 to $98,000 per annum, whilst a more seasoned captain can make an impressive $150,000 gross per year.

So the time and effort it takes to become a skipper on a vessel has its rewards.

Furthermore, if your time at sea exceeds 183 days each calendar year, there’s the strong possibility that you could qualify for the seafarers earnings deduction which means you are not obliged to pay any income tax on your earnings.

So the above salary figures could be your final take home.

A good yacht captain will lead the crew, be a good communicator and instil confidence.

Acquiring the RYA Certificate is a demonstration that one has shown such skills along with the necessary experience.

Teaching RYA Courses

These are taught to Royal Yacht Association syllabus and standards by experienced RYA Cruising Instructors and Yachtmaster instructors. If you successfully complete a RYA course you will gain a certificate that is recognised all over the world. Sailing Courses that are UK based rather than the Mediterranean or Caribbean will give you a solid grounding in tidal heights and currents. With those skills the whole world is your oyster.

Our RYA Courses give you time to learn and enjoy the scenery.

The voyages are 6 or 7 days long rather than the minimum 5 days so you have more time to enjoy sailing a classic boat. We teach sailing along some of the most iconic coastal landscapes in Britain. Famous headlands like Start Point or Lizard Point. Wooded river valleys that stretch far inland in Cornwall and Devon. Wild estuaries and salt marshes with seabirds and waders. Historic ports, smugglers quays and secret coves and caves. There is plenty of variety for teaching exercises from anchoring under sail to night navigation under unpolluted skies.

The skills you learn combine traditional seamanship with modern technology like radar and GPS, with the added bonus of a holiday on a beautiful boat.

The advantages of learning a RYA Course sailing onboard a traditional boat are many fold:

Deep keeled gaff cutters are great for beginner which gives them a sea kindly motion, un-cluttered decks and high sides so you can walk safely down the deck without side stepping down a narrow strip of plastic deck.

All the ropes are in the open so you can see were they go and what they do, nothing is hidden in masts and booms. Without the mechanical advantage of winches you are more aware of the forces of nature and working as a team builds friendships and adds to the pleasure. Why fight nature when you can harness it in safe traditional ways.

Our classic boats have all mod cons for a RYA Course, GPS, depth sounders and there are plenty of yachts around in port and out on the water to show you self tailing winches, jamming cleats and more 20th century fittings and features of the sailing world.

Why Learn to Skipper on a Boat with a Bowsprit?

It’s a great opportunity to pose.

Having a big pointy thing out the front, does help concentrate the mind and think ahead.

Manoeuvring under power you learn how to glide effortlessly and gently to a pontoon or quay. You are actually learning to ‘park’ a vessel that might be 59ft long with the bowsprit, so your instructor is not going to squeeze you into a small marina….and it is a huge buzz to bring a beautiful boat alongside under its own momentum.

Sail balance is important on all vessels but learning on a gaffer with a bowsprit or a yawl with two masts starts to teach you skills that can be applied to much bigger sailing vessels. When you get that dream job on a super yacht with three masts you will have more idea which sails to put up and in which sequence.

For skippers, the stable motion of a deep keeled vessel and a large chart table makes learning to navigate a lot easier than on many modern vessels.

Success aboard distinctive classic boats comes with a sense of achievement unmatched on a modern yacht. Your colours fly just that little bit higher.

Sailing Holidays Tallulah

Tallulah’s skipper and RYA instructor Debbie Purser has been teaching RYA courses on pilot cutters since 2003. She and other RYA instructors like Lara Bonney, Diggory Rose and James MacKenzie developed the teaching methods to offer the RYA syllabus for all courses on these seaworthy, long keeled boats that behave a bit differently from production yachts. Some things are easier, like walking down the deck in a bouncey sea, or ferry gliding onto a pontoon. Other things take a bit more teamwork than a small teaching yacht, like picking up a mooring under sail. Over 700 people learned RYA sailing skills and upwards of 3500 customers came sailing on our first pilot cutter 38ft Eve of St Mawes.

Classic Sailing now offer RYA courses on Eve’s slightly bigger sister Tallulah. This Luke Powell designed pilot cutter is 44 ft on deck and a fast and well behaved boat to sail. Her mainsail was deliberately smaller so her previous owners could handle her as a couple, but in light winds she has a powerful No1 jib with roller furling, a staysail you can reef and a large topsail. When the wind picks up we have a smaller jib or storm jib, the main can be reefed.

Tallulah runs RYA Competent Crew, RYA Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Exam Prep courses from St Mawes with the Cornish and Devon coasts to explore.

Comparing RYA, IYT & ASA Schemes

There are many different schemes you can follow to get certified to be on the water. The three more internationally accepted are the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), International Yacht Training (IYT) and the American Sailing Association (ASA). If you want to know more in detail about the RYA scheme, I recommend you read my previous post about it,  Understanding the RYA Scheme . To get a brief overview, I made this simple graphic to help you out.

Comparison of RYA, IYT and ASA schemes.

Beginner Classes

Competent crew.

Competent crew is the unofficial introduction class. It’s a 5-day class that brings you up to the level where if a skipper is asking you to do something, you know how to do it. A lot of it is learning the names of the parts of the boat and the various processes you can encounter. To learn more  visit the  RYA’s website .

Try Sailing & Introductory Sailing Skills

Try Sailing is quite a basic course. It is a half-day on board that covers basic manoeuvres, rope handling and the points of sail. IYT goes more in depth here . The second portion is Introductory Sailing Skills. This 2 day course takes it a little further by adding some person overboard and some collision regulations. It should bring you to a level where you are comfortable crewing for a skipper.

rya meaning yacht

Basic Keelboat Sailing

As with the two other schemes, the 101 course is meant to ease you into sailing. The instructor will go over parts of the boat, sail trim and buoyage. This is the course I did on Lake Champlain and had a great weekend doing so! The details are available here .

Intermediate Classes

Day skipper & coastal skipper.

I’ve covered the RYA scheme quite extensively on its own so to see that, click here . The important bit to know is that it is with a Day Skipper certificate that the RYA can give you an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC). This certificate allows you to charter a boat on vacation and also gives a good start to being a proper skipper and being able to plan short passages. The Coastal Skipper allows to understand more the passage planning portion and the harder manoeuvres in close quarters.

Day Skipper & International Bareboat Skipper

The IYT Day Skipper is slightly more limited than the RYA one. It limits the boat you can skipper to 10m but it is slightly shorter. It is a 3 to 4 day course that gives a good introduction to planning a safe sail and basic boat checks. Otherwise, the two are quite similar.

The International Bareboat Skipper syllabus is quite similar to the Coastal Skipper. It certifies that the person can sail in coastal waters and knows how to manoeuvre a boat adequately. For the IYT, it is the first course that requires other certifications and a minimum sea time. The course pushes further on the boat checks, weather, tides and general regulations. For those requirements and more information, you can click here .

Basic Coastal Cruising & Bareboat Cruising

ASA uses their different certification levels to go towards bigger boats. At the 103 level, they determine you can properly control a 25′ to 35′ boat. At the 104 level, they judge you are competent to manoeuvre a 30′ to 45′ foot boat. After learning intermediate trimming, basic weather, navigation rules and anchoring in 103, you’ll be able to push these further in 104. The 104 syllabus also adds on provisioning, passage planning, and advanced sail trimming. The 103 syllabus can be found here and the 104 details are here .

Yachtmaster

The Yachtmaster level is the highest-level one can achieve on the recreational scale. The differences at the end are very slim but two schemes resemble each other more.

The three Yachtmasters

Same as the RYA, IYT only examines at this level, officially. Schools offer preparation classes that can be taken and will help iron out any wrinkles to give you the most chances of passing. The main difference in the three levels is the distance you are considered competent to be from a safe haven. At coastal, you can go up to 60 nautical miles, at offshore, up to 150 nautical miles and the ocean level has no limit. Extensive meteorology and celestial navigation can be expected. One of the bonuses from IYT is that they not only offer sail and power endorsements but also a catamaran endorsement. For more information, the best is to go to the source at the RYA or IYT .

4 Classes left

ASA offers classes until the end of the scheme. The last 4 classes push further for the length of the boat (up to 50′) and the content covered. Essentially, they all cover the same but it is more broken down in this scheme. The goal is that at the end of this scheme, you can sail oceans comfortably and plan appropriately.

I hope this helps clarify and create links between the different schemes. If you have any questions don’t be shy to go to the contact page and I will help you find the information you need.

RYA vs IYT: Unleashing the Power of Unparalleled Sailing Education

RYA sailing instructor teaching navigation skills in Milna, Brac

If you are planning to learn how to sail and get certified, you may have come across two popular sailing schemes – the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and International Yacht Training (IYT).

Both offer sailing courses and certifications, but they have some key differences that are worth considering before making a decision.

RYA vs IYT: A Comprehensive Analysis

The RYA is a UK-based organisation that has been providing sailing courses and certifications for over 140 years. They are recognized around the world for their high-quality training programs, and their certificates are widely accepted by charter companies, marinas, and insurance providers.

The RYA offers a comprehensive range of courses, from beginner level to advanced racing and cruising, and they have a well-established training pathway that allows sailors to progress through the ranks.

RYA vs IYT – Royal Yachting Association (RYA): Nurturing Expertise for Over a Century

The RYA, a venerable UK-based organization, boasts a remarkable legacy of providing sailing courses and certifications for more than 140 years. This extensive history has established the RYA as a global leader in sailing education, known for its unwavering commitment to quality training programs. The certificates issued by the RYA enjoy widespread acceptance among charter companies, marinas, and insurance providers worldwide.

One of the standout features of the RYA is its comprehensive course offerings, catering to sailors at every proficiency level. From introductory courses for beginners to advanced programs focusing on racing and cruising, the RYA ensures a diverse curriculum that meets the varied needs of sailors. This breadth of options is complemented by a well-structured training pathway, allowing sailors to progress seamlessly through the ranks and hone their skills progressively.

Additionally, the international prestige associated with RYA certifications cannot be overstated. Recognized not only in the United Kingdom but also globally, RYA certificates open doors to sailing opportunities in diverse waters. The RYA’s emphasis on theoretical knowledge is particularly advantageous for sailors envisioning complex maritime activities, such as offshore racing or long-distance cruising.

Moreover, the RYA distinguishes itself with a strong commitment to safety standards. Courses often include rigorous safety training, ensuring that sailors are equipped with the skills to handle emergency situations at sea confidently. This emphasis aligns with the demands of the yachting industry, where a robust safety record is paramount for any sailor.

RYA VS IYT – International Yacht Training (IYT): Bridging Continents with Practicality

On the other side of the spectrum, the International Yacht Training (IYT) emerges as an international organization offering sailing courses and certifications in over 25 countries. IYT’s global reach makes it a potentially more accessible option for sailors outside of Europe. However, the distinctiveness of IYT lies in its emphasis on practical skills over extensive theoretical knowledge.

IYT courses, often tailored to a more hands-on approach, focus on building practical sailing skills. While this can be advantageous for individuals who prefer learning through direct experience, it might pose a disadvantage for those seeking a more comprehensive understanding of the theoretical aspects of sailing. The practicality of IYT courses may attract those looking for a quicker entry into the world of sailing, with less emphasis on in-depth theoretical knowledge.

When assessing the cost aspect, it becomes evident that IYT courses tend to be more expensive than their RYA counterparts. However, this difference in cost needs to be weighed against the potential benefits. IYT’s emphasis on practical skills could lead to quicker proficiency in sailing, making the investment worthwhile for those prioritizing a more expedited learning experience.

Despite the global presence of IYT, it’s essential to acknowledge that their certifications may not enjoy the same level of recognition as RYA certificates, particularly in Europe and the UK. Charter companies and marinas in these regions often prefer sailors with RYA certifications, viewing them as a mark of quality and professionalism.

Choosing Between RYS and IYT: Factors to Consider

In making the decision between RYA and IYT , several factors should be taken into account. If you prioritize a well-structured training pathway, comprehensive theoretical knowledge, and a globally recognized certification, the RYA may be the more suitable option. The RYA’s international prestige and commitment to safety standards further enhance its appeal, especially for those envisioning a career in sailing that involves intricate navigation and diverse maritime activities.

However, individual preferences and goals play a significant role in this decision. If you lean towards a more hands-on, practical approach to learning and value the potential for quicker proficiency in sailing skills, IYT could be an attractive choice. The global accessibility of IYT may be particularly advantageous for sailors planning to navigate waters beyond Europe.

In conclusion, while both RYA and IYT offer excellent sailing courses and certifications, the decision ultimately hinges on your individual needs and preferences. The RYA stands out for its globally recognized certifications, comprehensive theoretical training, and commitment to safety standards. On the other hand, IYT’s practical focus may appeal to those seeking a more expedited and hands-on approach to learning sailing skills. Careful consideration of your aspirations, learning preferences, and intended sailing destinations will help you determine the most suitable sailing certification program for your journey into the world of sailing.

The 8 Essential RYA Knots Every Sailor Should Know

rya meaning yacht

As a sailor, knowing how to tie knots is essential for the safe and successful operation of your vessel. There are hundreds of knots, but only a handful are really essential for sailing. In this blog post, we’ll cover the 8 essential RYA knots every sailor should know and how to tie them. These keys knots feature in our RYA Day Skipper Theory course, available online today.

1. Bowline Knot

rya meaning yacht

A bowline knot is a highly useful knot to know for several reasons, making it an essential skill for sailors, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Here are some of the main reasons why the bowline is so valuable:

  • A secure fixed loop: The bowline creates a secure, fixed loop at the end of a rope, which can be used for attaching to other ropes, sails, cleats, railings, anchors… the list goes on! This fixed loop does not slip or bind under load, ensuring a stable and reliable connection.
  • Easy to untie: Despite its strength and stability, the bowline is relatively easy to untie, even after being subjected to heavy loads or tension. This feature makes it practical for situations where a knot may need to be adjusted or removed quickly.
  • Versatility: The bowline knot is versatile and can be used in various applications, it is often used to secure halyards to the sail, sheets to the boom and lanyards to a fender. In climbing and rescue scenarios, it can be employed to create secure attachment points for harnesses, anchors, or other gear.

2. Clove Hitch

rya meaning yacht

The Clove Hitch knot is a versatile knot with a variety of applications. When used in sailing, it is typically used to tie the end of a line to an object such as a guardrail. Here are three points to be aware of when using the Clove Hitch knot in sailing:

  • Adjustable: The Clove Hitch is an easily adjustable knot. This can be really useful in different situations. For example if approaching a pontoon and the height of the fenders needs to be raised or lowered.
  • Easy to tie and untie: The Clove Hitch is a knot that can be tied or untied quickly and easily, valuable when working on a boat and needing to attach a line securely and quickly.
  • Limitation: Although the clove hitch has many uses around the boat it is less secure than other knots such as a Round Turn & Two half hitches (Knot 6 below) Check out the video below to learn how to tie the clove hitch knot.

3. Figure of Eight Knot

rya meaning yacht

The Figure of Eight Knot is a common knot used in sailing and boating. It is typically used to create a stopper knot at the end of a line or to attach a line to an object. Here are three points that show the value of the Figure Eight Knot in sailing:

  • Secure and Reliable: The Figure Eight Knot is a secure and reliable knot that can handle significant loads as use as a stopper knot. It is less likely to slip or come undone compared to other knots, making it a dependable use as a stopper.
  • Easy untie: Despite being able to handle significant loads as a stopper knot it is still easy to undo, even if it has been used as a stopper knot for years!
  • Limitations: If not sufficiently tightened or too near the end of a line its could work itself loose. Check out the video below and learn how to master the figure of eight knot.

4. Sheet Bend

rya meaning yacht

The Sheet Bend Knot is a common knot used in sailing and boating. It is typically used to join two lines together, especially when the lines are different sizes or materials. Here are some key points about using a sheet bend in sailing:

  • The sheet bend is used to connect the ends of two lines with different diameters or materials. This makes it suitable for uses such as connecting a heaving line to a large mooring warp or a tow line.
  • Strong and Reliable: The Sheet Bend Knot is a strong and reliable knot that can handle significant loads. It is designed to maintain its strength even when the lines being joined are different sizes or materials. It has the same structure as a bowline and shares its strengths and weaknesses.
  • The Sheet bend – also known as the Common Bend, Flag Bend or Becket Bend. Check our how to tie it here:

5. Rolling Hitch

rya meaning yacht

The Rolling Hitch Knot is another common and extremely useful knot used in sailing and boating. Its three main features:

  • Similar to a clove hitch but with an extra turn. This allows the knot to have grip strength and stops it from slipping when being pulled from the side.
  • It can be used for tying onto lines under tension, this can allow a line under load to be removed from a winch without easing the tension of the line. It can also be used to tie a knot to a vertical object, such as a metal shroud
  • Easy and quick to tie. Chances are you may need a rolling hitch to free a jammed line under load or a riding turn on a winch. As long as you keep well practiced its a quick, easy and useful knot that can help get out of a potentially tricky situation!

6. Round Turn & Two Half Hitches Knot

rya meaning yacht

The Round Turn & Two Half Hitches Knot is typically used to attach a line to a post, piling, guardrail or other object. Here are three points that show the value of the Two Half Hitches Knot in sailing:

  • Secure and Reliable: Done correctly this knot should not slip or loosen easily. this makes it a very secure knot for tying lines that may take considerable load.
  • Able to tie and untie under load: Because the round turn part of the knot is taking the load, the two half hitches can be tied or untied whilst there is still load on the knot. This also means it can be tensioned before tying if needing to lash an object tightly (such as a dingy to you deck). or untied if there is still tension on the line, like a mooring warp to a post.
  • Although it is a strong and secure knot, it is less easy to adjust than other types of hitch such as a clove hitch.

7. Reef Knot

rya meaning yacht

The Reef Knot, also known as the Square Knot, is used to tie two ends of the same line together, such as when securing a reefed sail to the boom.

  • Originally used to reef a sail to the boom. They are now less common on modern yachts which now pull the clew and the tack to create tension along the foot of the sail.
  • Can be easy to get wrong!
  • While the Reef Knot is a valuable knot for tying two ends of the same line together, it should not be used to tie two lines of different sizes or materials, as it can become unstable and slip under tension.

8. Double Sheet Bend Knot

rya meaning yacht

The Double Sheet Bend Knot is much the same as the sheet bend above, except with an extra turn. Benefits of a double sheet bend over a single sheet bend:

  • The double sheet bend is more secure when the two lines being tied together are of greater difference in thickness.
  • Added surface area between the two lines creates more friction and therefore a more secure knot to join two lines together.

Knowing how to tie essential knots is a critical skill for any seafarer. By mastering these 8 RYA knots from the RYA Day Skipper syllabus, you will be well-equipped to handle a variety of situations on the water. Whether you need to secure your boat to a post, attach a line to a cleat, or prevent a line from slipping through a block, these knots will come in handy. Practice tying these knots until you can do them quickly and confidently, and don’t forget to regularly inspect your lines and safety gear for any signs of wear and chaff, to ensure they are in good working condition.

Tips for buying or selling a boat

Buying or selling a boat can be an exciting yet daunting prospect for any boater, to guide you through the process here are our top tips..

wide shot of boat with 3 sailors

Whether purchasing your first boat or selling one you’ve owned for years, there’s a few key factors to consider.

Just like when purchasing a house, it’s important not to get swept up in the romance of buying a boat and instead look at the practical and financial implications.

However, unlike when buying a house, the law does not stipulate a process for the sale and purchase of boats.

The finer details

The sale of second-hand boats usually occurs between two private individuals and is often conducted via a broker, who acts as an agent for the seller.

VAT is not chargeable on the sale of second-hand boats between private individuals, but VAT is charged to the seller for the services rendered by the broker. The broker will usually charge the seller a commission for these services.

Prior to entering into an agreement to buy a boat, the purchaser will wish to make sure that the seller legally owns the boat and has the right to sell it. They’ll also ensure that the boat is not subject to any mortgages, debts or charges etc.

for sale signs on boats

What if the boat is subject to a mortgage?

If the boat is subject to a mortgage the RYA recommends that the purchaser have a 3-way-conversation with the seller, themselves, and the lenders.

It’s often the case that the purchaser will pay the proportion of the purchase monies outstanding on the mortgage, direct to the lenders.

The lenders will more often than not hold the title documentation for the boat and upon redemption of the outstanding mortgage, release the title documents direct to the seller/purchaser.

Wide shot of boat with sailors

Does it comply with Recreational Craft Regulations? (RCR)

If you’re purchasing a boat, it’s vital to see a copy of all title documentation and be confident that the seller does indeed own the boat, that the boat is VAT paid or exempt.

It’s important to ensure the boat is compliant with the Recreational Craft Regulations (RCR) if the boat is the UK, or the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) if in the EU.

The requirements have changed and it’s likely that if you buy a boat in one territory and export it to another, it will need to undergo a post construction assessment.

Information on this is in our RYA RCR and RCD Guide for Boats .

What paperwork do I need when selling my boat?

When selling, make sure that you have your paperwork together, the main documents that you’re likely to be asked for include:

  • Evidence that the boat is VAT paid, such as the original invoice
  • Registration documentation
  • Evidence of RCR/RCD compliance
  • Service information for the engine, generator, sails, water heater
  • Builders Certificate (not essential but helpful)  Bills of Sale
  • Owner’s Manual and further manuals for all the equipment on the boat with financial records and receipts of any large repair bills

Sale and Purchase Agreement

Whilst verbal agreements between parties are perfectly valid in law, they are notoriously difficult to prove, and any disagreement will come down to one party’s word against the other.

For this reason, the RYA strongly recommends that a written Sale and Purchase Agreement is used on all boat purchases.

RYA members can access the online RYA Sale and Purchase Pack , which includes a Sale and Purchase Agreement template with a step-by-step guide to buying and selling boats.

Practicalities

We also recommend buyers have a survey carried out on a boat prior to finally agreeing the purchase, especially if the boat is second-hand and being sold privately.

In most cases this is the only way to check the boat’s condition and the results will often determine whether a sale proceeds smoothly, has its terms renegotiated or terminated.

There’s also no better way to know how a boat will react when in the water than by conducting a sea-trail.

You may want to consider boat insurance, although it is not compulsory in the UK.
