Go’s captain discusses St. Maarten collision

Captain simon johnson has spoken to local media about the moments leading up to the incident….

Image for article Go’s captain discusses St. Maarten collision

Following the  collision of 77m motoryacht  Go  into a dock in St. Maarten on Wednesday 24 February, 2021, the yacht’s captain has spoken exclusively to The Daily Herald to set the record straight and describe the moments prior to the yacht’s sudden control malfunction during the crucial minutes of the line-up procedure to exit Simpson Bay Lagoon.

According to the report, the yacht’s software failed Captain Simon Johnson at the worst possible moment, leading to his choosing a deliberate impact with the St. Maarten Yacht Club wooden dock to avoid a worse scenario. A second run-in to the dock was then said to be caused by, yet again, a computer miscommunication between the bridge and engine room in a bid to regain control.

“Johnson confirmed that the yacht’s insurance assessors are progressing well in their survey of all the damage sustained to the boat, which is minimal, and the dock, and are engaged to set things right,” The Daily Herald reports. “The root causes of the malfunction have not yet been definitively identified and an intensive investigation is underway while the yacht remains at Ile de Sol Marina.”

Captain Johnson told the newspaper about the moments leading up to the incident; “We left the dock an hour before and went through all the checks. There was nothing different from the other times we’ve done this exit… Then, when we were about 50 metres away and holding position, the yacht started moving mysteriously forward. There was nothing I seemed to be able to do; all the controls on the bridge were showing normal. I called the engine room and everything was normal down there.”

With extremely limited control and the yacht approaching the bridge, Johnson said he had to think fast, deciding that the preferred option was to point the bow towards the yacht club dock and beach her gently there, with a crewmember up front to ensure everyone was out of the way.

Johnson added that he is troubled by the incident; “The fact that there were no warning alarms, no lights on board to indicate something was wrong was really scary. I know this yacht so well, yet I had 13 seconds to make a decision before hitting the bridge. The decision I made was one I would make again if faced with the same circumstances.”

He also criticised modern electronics as getting “ridiculously over the top”, with no manual overrides or back-ups if something goes wrong. “Questions have to be asked in this industry about what’s going on; who is building these boats, who is designing them, who is supervising them, and why we aren’t being asked what we (captains) need to operate them,” he said.

The full interview can be read via The Daily Herald here .

'GO' Enquiry

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

University president is cleared of bullying in Black academic’s suicide

Dr. John B. Moseley: Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey.

The president of Lincoln University in Missouri will remain in his position, the institution decided after an investigation into the suicide of a Black administrator found no evidence that he had bullied her, according to university officials.

President John Moseley was placed on paid leave after the death in January of Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey, the vice president of student affairs at Lincoln, a historically Black university.

“For us, this report is not the end of a process, but rather the beginning of one,” Victor Pasley, president of the university’s Board of Curators, said Thursday in a statement .

“None of its findings have led the Board to doubt President Moseley’s ability to lead the University, but this tragedy has forced us to grapple more fully with issues facing Lincoln and our individual students and employees — ranging from mental health support to employee work and relationships.”

Candia-Bailey, 49, died by suicide in Illinois on Jan. 8. Her mother, Veronica Candia, and husband, Anthony Bailey, previously told NBC News that Moseley had fired her in the days before her death. Bailey also said her daughter had been feeling depressed and unsupported at work. She said Candia-Bailey told her family that her relationship with Moseley had soured.

Candia-Bailey’s longtime friend Monica Graham said she received an email from Candia-Bailey the day she died that included a letter addressed to Moseley. In the letter, Candia-Bailey expressed concerns about Moseley’s leadership and the school administration, and wrote that Moseley had “intentionally harassed and bullied” her. The allegations prompted protests from students and alumni, calling for Moseley’s ouster.

Graham said she last saw Candia-Bailey in October at the university’s homecoming celebration. “She said this job isn’t going to kill me and this job depresses me,” Graham said.

Neither Graham nor Candia or Bailey initially responded to a request for comment from NBC News on the release of the university’s report.

After Candia-Bailey’s death, s tudents marched and showed up outside a closed Board of Curators’ meeting to demand accountability. Moseley was placed on paid leave while a third party reviewed both the school’s handling of personnel issues and Candia-Bailey’s allegations, the board said in January.

In its statement, the Board of Curators said investigators looked at text messages, emails and other correspondence, and interviewed two dozen employees and leaders to determine whether Moseley had bullied Candia-Bailey.

“Dr. Candia-Bailey’s claims that she was bullied by President Moseley were unsubstantiated. Specifically, when directly asked in the course of this investigation, no witnesses reported that they had ever witnessed President Moseley engage in bullying — and all denied having ever personally felt bullied by President Moseley,” the board said in its statement.

The investigators also determined that the university had not failed to accommodate Candia-Bailey’s mental health needs under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and noted that she was not eligible for the leave she requested because she had been at the university for less than a year. The “University responded appropriately to requests for accommodation by, among other things, allowing remote work and the use of accrued leave,” the statement reads.

Following Candia-Bailey’s death, social media users and leaders in higher education flooded the internet with messages of support for her and her family. Sherman Bonds, the president of the university’s national alumni association, was among those who supported Candia-Bailey and called for Moseley’s ouster, telling NBC News , “We need new leadership and obviously to heal.”

Bonds did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the university report.

Candia-Bailey’s mother marveled at the outpouring of support for her daughter in the weeks after her death.

“I was not aware that there were so many people who thought so highly about my daughter,” she said. “I’d just like for her to be remembered as an inspiration to others.”

Moseley could not immediately be reached for comment, but, in a comment included in the board’s statement, he said his “thoughts and prayers have been and continue to be with Dr. Bailey’s family, friends, and our campus community.”

“The Board advised me of the report’s findings a week ago, and I’ve had time to reflect and to discuss my future and that of the University with my family and members of the Lincoln University community,” Moseley continued. “I care deeply for this University, its mission, our students, staff and faculty and I look forward to returning from administrative leave to resume my duties as President.”

L'Jarius Sneed trade: Three reasons Chiefs got so little from Titans for Super Bowl champion cornerback

Why was the return for kansas city so minimal.

getty-ljarius-sneed-chiefs.jpg

The Kansas City Chiefs valued cornerback L'Jarius Sneed as a "franchise player" with a fully guaranteed $19.8 million to start the 2024 NFL offseason. This week, they agreed to part with him for essentially a single 2025 third-round draft pick, also swapping seventh-rounders to send the star cover man to the Tennessee Titans . So what changed? Or did the Chiefs never believe Sneed warranted a lucrative investment? Here, we're exploring three reasons the reigning champions got so little in return.

1. The Chiefs weren't set to pay Sneed long-term

Chiefs safety Justin Reid said ahead of Super Bowl LVIII that Sneed was "easily" his most underrated teammate and deserved lucrative recognition this offseason. But one of the reasons the Chiefs have repeatedly returned to the title game is their willingness to make tough decisions and reset expensive positions around core pieces like Patrick Mahomes . They did it with Tyreek Hill in 2022, sacrificing a star playmaker for an avoidance of said player's market-pacing contract demands. They're doing it again here; it's not a coincidence reports of Sneed's exit included overt mention that the Titans will be giving their new corner a new deal.

2. Sneed is older, and his star replacement is already in place

Age isn't everything; the Chiefs, after all, just paid big bucks to Chris Jones , who will be 30 this summer. But Sneed is a bit older for a player seemingly just hitting his prime; he was 23 as a rookie, and he would've been 28 coming off the 2024 tag. And unlike up front, where the Chiefs don't have a readymade successor for Jones along the interior, the K.C. secondary already includes 23-year-old Trent McDuffie , who's arguably the club's top cover man after a second-year breakout in 2023. The team also has a recent history of successful cornerback turnover, developing Sneed to justify letting former starter Charvarius Ward walk in free agency.

3. CB is a volatile position, and it may be losing some value

More than perhaps any other spot, cornerback tends to be home to serious year-to-year variability, with even esteemed cover men like Jalen Ramsey and Stephon Gilmore and Darius Slay enduring big-play slumps. And while an elite corner is still a premium asset in today's NFL -- see: Sauce Gardner , Patrick Surtain II , etc. -- this year's free agent market was also particularly dim, with only two veterans securing deals averaging at least $10 million per year. Not a single free agent corner also secured a deal longer than three years, reiterating the long-term unpredictability of the job.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

Seven georgia bulldogs go in first three rounds of nfl mock draft, share this article.

Seven Georgia Bulldogs are projected to go in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL draft. Overall, a dozen Georgia Bulldogs are hoping to get selected in the draft, which will be held in Detroit, Michigan, from April 25-27.

Georgia has a lot of premier NFL draft prospects including tight end Brock Bowers and offensive tackle Amarius Mims. Bowers and Mims, who are both projected as first-round picks, were both dealing with hamstring issues at Georgia’s pro day and are electing to workout in front of NFL scouts on April 10.

NFL mock drafts are always interesting. The draft is impossible to predict, but the closer we get the draft, the easier it is to project what will unfold. In Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft, it has has two Georgia Bulldogs teaming up on both the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts. Georgia football fans would love to see a few Bulldogs paired up in the NFL.

Let’s look at where PFF projects all seven Georgia Bulldogs will land in its latest three-round mock draft.

Defensive back Tykee Smith

position yacht go

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Pick: No. 94 (third-round)

Tykee Smith has helped his NFL draft status thanks to an impressive Senior Bowl and great NFL combine. Smith would be in an ideal landing spot with the 49ers, who have one of the top defenses in the NFL.

Team: San Francisco 49ers

Center Sedrick Van-Pran

position yacht go

Pick: No. 75 (third-round)

Van Pran projects as a plug-and-play center in the draft. He’s expected to be a second- or third-round pick, but is certainly one of the top centers in the draft. Van Pran would be paired with USC quarterback Caleb Williams in PFF’s mock draft.

Team: Chicago Bears

Safety Javon Bullard

position yacht go

Pick: No. 70 (third-round)

Javon Bullard brings tackling ability to whatever NFL team drafts him. Bullard has experience guarding slot receivers and lining up at deep safety.

Team: New York Giants

Cornerback Kamari Lassiter

position yacht go

Pick: No. 46 (second-round)

Kamari Lassiter can immediately compete for the No. 2 cornerback role for most NFL teams. Lassiter recorded 37 tackles and eight pass deflections last season at Georgia.

Team: Indianapolis Colts

Wide receiver Ladd McConkey

position yacht go

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Pick: No. 34 (second-round)

PFF has Ladd McConkey pairing with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels on the New England Patriots. McConkey has gotten some first-round buzz in recent weeks, but just misses out on the first-round in this mock draft. New England desperately needs wide receiver help.

Team: New England Patriots

Right tackle Amarius Mims

position yacht go

Pick: No. 31 (first-round)

Amarius Mims is one of the most talented players in the draft regardless of position. Mims, who has been nursing a hamstring injury, does not have an abundance of college starting experience, but he’s ready to play in the NFL.

Mims has one of the craziest builds you will have ever seen - in a good way - at 6-foot-8 and 340 pounds. His talent and potential are too good to escape the first round. He also played right tackle in college, which aligns with a potential starting spot for the Niners.

Tight end Brock Bowers

position yacht go

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Pick: No. 15 (first-round)

The Colts would be getting an absolute steal with Brock Bowers at No. 15. Bowers should start right away in the NFL and is often being compared to San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle ahead of the NFL draft.

This is a common mock draft choice, but it's an easy one to make if Bowers falls this far - which I believe is realistic. Bowers could be in for plenty of early targets from quarterback Anthony Richardson.
