Revisiting the Cherubini Hunter 30

hunter 30ft sailboat

CeCe Stoldt

If you grew up sailing in Florida in the 1970s and 80s as I did, you probably spent many hours day dreaming and looking at Hunters, or, if you were fortunate, sailing one. Those memories might not exist at all were it not for bit of luck and perseverance. While the U.S. economy was caught in a global recession, the Hunter plant in Florida was still churning out sailboat hulls by the dozens.

You didnt have to spend a lot of time on these boats to realize that they werent the paragon of craftsmanship. The laminated floor and furniture seemed dated even back then, and the rough glasswork betrayed the boats mission: to persuade the average Joe that even he could still afford a great escape. By the mid-1980s, it seemed as if every third sailboat entering the Biscayne Bays waterborne bacchanalia, the Columbus Day Regatta, was a Hunter. (Escape, as any good boatbuilder knows, can take many forms.)

While Hunters marketing genius is enviable, the true achievement in its early boats like the John Cherubini-designed Hunter 30, which we review in the June issue of Practical Sailor is that theyve managed to endure at all. The Hunter 30 was launched on the wake of the 1973 oil embargo, and the design survived through nine years of stagflation and rising unemployment.

Fortunately, for Hunter and other builders who prevailed in this era, significant improvements in fiberglass construction methods coincided with the need for lower production costs. Laminate schedules were getting thinner, and the higher fiber-to-resin ratio was more economical. Selling sailboats could still be lucrative, but profitability in the mid-price ranges often required a few corners to be cut.

Almost any sailing forum on the Internet has its resident boat snob who compares fixing up and old production boat from the 70s to putting lipstick on a pig. Certainly, the Hunter 30 has some inherent flaws, but none are irredeemable. Just as a vase cracked during firing can hold more charm than the perfect one, an old Hunter 30 can grow on you. The photos submitted by proud owners that accompany the June 2016 boat review are the clearest proof of this.

We stumbled on this inspiring treasure trove by chance. The handwritten surveys in our dusty decades-old file on the Hunter 30 were growing stale, so for this update on the Hunter 30 we turned to current owners for their impressions. A surprising number of owners responded with detailed answers to our questions, and though each had a few quibbles, the overall assessment of the Hunter 30 was overwhelmingly positive.

Of course, I found the tales of customized improvements to be intriguing, but what really moved me were the personal stories behind what might be considered a run-of-the-mill entry-level cruiser. One Hunter 30 had been passed down through two generations, another had sailed to the Caribbean and back, and another had served as an affordable home while its owner pursued a graduate degree.

Browsing the photos of the Hunter 30s featured in the June issue, I was reminded that a boats pedigree is a terrible gauge of a boats true worth. No, a Cherubini-designed Hunter-despite the exotic-sounding name-is not a Morris, a Hinckley, or a Swan. But in the hands of an owner who appreciates his good fortune, a modest Hunter 30 is worth more than the finest megayacht.

See the June 2016 issue for the complete review of the Hunter 30. For an indepth look at more than a dozen classic, entry-level cruising boats that won’t break the bank, you can purchase our two-volume e-book “Entry Level Racer Cruisers” at our online bookstore .

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

There is also an entrance to the master stateroom from the galley. Forward, the V-berth is large and comfortable with plenty of storage and has its own freshwater sink. The owner's stateroom is aft and offers a center line bed (rare for any aft cockpit sailboat). It can be entered via the galley or head and offers a standing headroom of up to 6' 2". There are two hanging lockers and ample storage compartments. The head is to starboard and includes an onboard shower. Engine access and maintenance for easy and quick. 1994 Hunter 29.5

1994 Hunter 29.5

Mobile, Alabama

This vessel is in very good condition for its age. The owner has added a nice water pressure gauge conveniently located at the engine. There are no signs of mold or mildew. Inside, it smelled and looked fresh and clean. Other than a slight bit of oxidation on the chrome, everything was in tip top shape and very impressive. The seller has taken pride in taking such good care of her. She and the owner just came back from a trip to the Keys. Per the seller, everything is in working order. Stock #391985 ***SALE PENDING*** Classic 1994 Hunter sailboat that has lots of upgrades added Like most Hunter sailboats, the Hunter 29.5 offers maximum accommodations, a large comfortable cockpit, and reasonable sailing performance at an affordable price. The Hunter 29.5 was designed by Hunter's in-house staff under Rob Mazza. It exemplifies a boat that appears to have been designed from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Like all production boats in this size range, the Hunter 29.5 is constructed from fiberglass composites utilizing a modular type of construction. The hull, deck, structural grid, and interior components are molded separately and then assembled into the finished product with structural adhesives or secondary bonds of fiberglass and resin. The deck is cored with balsa wood, and the hull is a solid composite. There is a nice solid clear windshield which makes steering and navigating an easy task and also an upgraded hard top that will last a very long time. Also located atop the helm is a set of solar panels with a Jupiter inverter. The 29.5 has a rather large cockpit for her size that opens at the stern to a molded swim platform. At anchor, this becomes an integral part of the cockpit adding even more usable space. This is one of the 29.5's more appealing features, and it makes getting in and out of the water or dinghy quite easy. Wheel steering is at the helm at the aft end of the cockpit, and there are two seats incorporated into the stern rail for passenger seating. Although the seller has upgraded the wooden steering wheel, the stock wheel is included with this purchase. Because the side decks are narrow with rigging shrouds at the deck edge, to go forward, the best path is over the cabin trunk. The foredeck has a small anchor locker which will accommodate a 13-pound Danforth with chain leader and 100 feet of half-inch rode. There are also two sturdy anchor rollers forward. This vessel houses three anchors. Below deck, the cabin is wide open with the only privacy offered by a fully enclosed head. There is a V-berth forward, and the main saloon features a large U-shaped dinette that comfortably seats four adults. The head and a small hanging locker are to starboard, and the galley is to port with a two-burner non-pressurized alcohol stove, a refrigerator, and a single sink. Aft and below the cockpit is an athwartship double berth. Auxiliary power is provided by a two-cylinder, 18 hp Yanmar diesel contained in an engine box beneath the companionway steps. This workhorse of an engine dominates the market in boats of this size and is very dependable. Quick access for maintenance is limited but, if necessary, the engine box can be removed easily for more serious work. The 29.5 is designed with simplicity in mind, and the large mainsail and small fractional jib certainly make tacking and sail handling a breeze for the short-handed or single-handed sailor. Included you'll find an autopilot as well as an Autohelm handheld steering device Without a traveler, the mainsheet attaches to the steering console directly in front of the helmsman. Sheet winches are also within easy reach of the helm. The B&R rig features long spreaders that are swept back 30 degrees eliminating a backstay. This necessitates tacking downwind to avoid impaling the mainsail on the spreaders, but I think that most would not find this much of an inconvenience. With the proper tacking angles, this can actually be a faster way to sail downwind. 1996 Hunter 336 sailboat great project boat

1996 Hunter 336 sailboat great project boat

Panama City, Florida

Story of the Kathryn Ann...I bought this boat in 2004 off of eBay from an insurance website that sells boats that have been damaged. In this particular case, Hurricane Isabelle ran up the eastern coast and hit the marina this boat was stored at in Maryland, in which the waves beat the boat on the starboard side into the dock piling resulting in damage to the side of the boat and the interior walls of the bathroom (opposite side of the hull damage). I had the boat shipped to me in Panama City, FL where I started the rebuild. Upon arrival of the boat, I took everything out of it and rinsed it all down. I could tell that water had entered the boat and looked as if it had rolled over to its starboard side down in the water a bit because I could see the water line marks. The boat was in fresh water, but where the storm churned up the water, there was a blanket of dirt in the part of the cabin from the water intrusion. Everything cleaned up pretty well except the wood from the water line down was stained. I took the motor out, which is a Yanmar 3GM30F, and had a diesel mechanic go through it and luckily no water got in the engine and it has ran like a top since I have had it. I repaired the hull with the best glass and resins from RAKA in south Florida, never had any problems since the repair. Once I finished up the hull repair, I went ahead and put it in the water to start enjoying it with the intentions of working on it on the weekends to finish it up. Unfortunately not long after putting the boat in the water, I got orders to be stationed in Colorado (Air Force guy) where there is little water! I have been trying to get back to Panama City every since with no luck. So I would come down a couple times a year to try to complete the finish work, but never seemed to get it completed because I would rather take it out with the boys and have fun instead of work on it! As much as it kills me, I need to let her go so that the next person can finish what I started and bring her back to her ol' glory, plus my family never got into it like I hoped, it's a great boat that needs to be used. I'll try my best to describe what still needs to be done...I have rewired most of the DC, never messed with the AC for the simple fact that I didn't have a hook-up available, so that will need to be gone through, the key switch on the operator panel needs to be replaced, I have a lot of new line, but some will still need to be replaced, the anchor light on top of the mast needs replacing, the teak needs to be cleaned and re oiled, there are some pieces that will need to be replaced, the cushions in the front cabin have some water damage (see pic), I have some extra material to do this, but would recommend something a little less 1980s in there. There is a little tear in one of the seat cushions, see pic. Need fuel gauge put in, have one on the boat, just not installed yet. Needs new instruments (speed/depth) possibly just transducer, I used a friends electronics when I took it out for depths. The bathroom needs to be finished, everything works, just needs finishing. Starboard side bumper over repair needs securing. I used the propane system for the stove 5-6 yrs ago, but would recommend going through that to make sure everything checks out. All the stainless needs polishing. Needs bottom paint. A couple of the deck poles need the base rewelded and resealed to the boat, that is where some of the water leaked in the boat over the years. There are some chips in the gelcoat on the rear right side (top deck) from something pecking on it, some gelcoat cracks from age, nothing major, aesthetic stuff. There may be a few more things here and there like screws that need replaced or line, but to the best of my knowledge, that's about it. This is a great buy for a Father/son deal to teach your kids the ins and outs of a sailboat without spending a huge chunk of cash, plus not worry about the kid dinking up a big money boat. Or great for a person to take to the keys or the beaches of the Gulf. Good Luck...hit me up with any questions! I've tried to describe this the best I can, this is not a new boat, so please don't expect one. The boat is sold as-is...where is, come get it! Thanks for looking!

"Just Peachy" is a stunning mid-sized cruiser with a highly functional layout that looks and feels much larger inside and out than her 35' length. All lines lead aft to the cockpit which translates to ease of handling for a couple or single handed. Hunter has designed the rig on this boat to ensure safety and real versatility in all wind conditions. The entertainment size cockpit provides for enjoyable evenings at sea as well as comfort under sail. The cockpit has a full enclosure with glass and screens which is ideal when out cruising or at anchor. Skylights thoughout the cabin, ensure that the interior is bright, elegant and inviting. The main salon has all custom leather cushions in a beautiful burgundy and cream. There is a spacious head with a hot/cold fresh water shower located in it's own space in the head. A second hot/cold freshwater shower at the walk-through transom duplicates a comfort of a much larger boat. Aft, under the cockpit, there is a huge stateroom with a queen size berth and two opening portholes. The entire interior is finished with varnished teak. There is a long list of equipment as well an extensive collection of owner's manuals, literature and receipts relating to the boat. The second day had us leaving the ICW to sail up the Gulf entering Tampa Bay at Egmont Key's south channel and on to Manatee River. The boat ran and sailed wonderfully. This boat has shore powered A/C which is almost necessary in the summer months. If you are looking at 30 foot sailboats, make sure this one is on your list to see. It's ready to sail away at Regatta Point Marina. Recently reduced from $35,000 to $29,900. Owner says sell.Look at the boat anytime at Regatta Point Marina - slip B1 and call Jim for a showing.
