Howth Yacht Club

• Family friendly

With a very active keelboat and dinghy racing fleets, Howth Yacht Club offers a wide range of training in sailing and water activities open to members and non members of all ages and skill levels. Throughout the year, courses include Learn To Sail programmes for keelboat and dinghy enthusiasts, Intro to Powerboating classes, and instructor led kayaking and paddleboarding sessions in the stunning scenario of Howth Peninsula and Ireland’s Eye.

Howth Yacht Club is also the home of the world's oldest one design racing keelboat class, Howth Seventeen Footer, a gaff rigged topsail boat designed by Walter Herbert Boyd in 1897 to be sailed in Ireland’s local waters. From April to November, residents and visitors to Howth can still marvel at the original five Howth 17’s boats that came to the harbour in the spring of 1898, which keep fiercely racing against the other boats of this historic class that have been built since. Howth Yacht Club has a 250 berth marina and 60 swinging moorings. Marina berths are a great base for visiting boats, and cruising sailors are always welcome to enjoy some shore time at the club’s lively bar and elegant restaurant.

Howth Yacht Club is on the pedestrian promenade of Howth Village, a thriving tourism location with direct public transport links to Dublin City centre and other nearby attractions in Fingal. Howth Yacht Club is also only a 20 minute drive from Dublin’s airport, conveniently located as an international venue for business meetings and conventions. The club organises and runs many sailing events and courses for members and visitors throughout the year and have very active keelboat and dinghy racing fleets.

Howth’s scenery, cliff side walking trails, wide variety of sea birds and mammals, and the overall well preserved natural environment contribute to the club’s unique atmosphere.

Overall rating

One must be a due-paying club member to have free access here; however, a friend of a friend 'hosted' me and I wandered around freely in this really nice yacht club in a gorgeous location. The club has a vast comfortable bar and lounge space with two dining areas for guests to spill into, as well as large windows with beautiful views of the harbor. There are three levels which include some private dining/function spaces and a couple decks for enjoying a bevvie in the sunshine or simply to take in the wild seaside. If you're a sailor, a membership might be worth a consideration. I stuck around to see the crews return and enjoy a 'sailing supper' which smelled mighty good! Ahoy the shore!

Weight control and aerodynamics played a crucial role, given the massive use of glass. Representing the second hull in Turkish shipyard Bilgin’s 263 series, the 80m (263ft) superyacht LEONA has just been launched from their Istanbul fitting-out center. With her flowing, elegant silhouette and crimson hull, her exterior design is the result of a collaboration between the shipyard and Antalya-based naval architects Unique Yacht Design, while the renowned H2 Yacht Design took care of the interior.

We were there in late April and this was the highlight of the trip..Can't say enough about how nice the crew was in showing us the waters and more importantly taking care of us. We were a party of 5 ranging in age from 85 to 25. I believe Poseidon put an extra crew member aboard to help the "old folks" have an excellent time on the yacht. That was above and beyond. The "extra" crew assisted my wife on her snorkeling adventure-such a thrill for her. 3 snorkel spots were great. Lunch was excellent and drinks expertly made. The swim platform made it very easy for us "old folks" to get in and out of the water. I doubt that Poseidon wishes to be known as the geriatric company, but believe me their efforts to make the trip a profound pleasure for us "old folks" were very successful. We did a Full Day Charter on Salacia with a big group of adults and kids. Our Captain Santos was so sweet! He even let our 3 year old pretend to drive! He knew all the best spots to go. He took us to iguana island and the kids were excited to see all the iguanas. Then we went to sand dollar island where we snorkeled and saw stingrays and actually found sand dollars! They took us out to see an incredible ship wreck that gave us amazing photos! We ended with going to a floating bar and restaurant! Jay was so amazing with the kids showing them all the wild life and swimming with the kids to point things out! Staff was very accommodating and quickly became best friends with the kids. I do have to brag on Toni who made best mojitos and other drinks, Jay with all the best water activities accommodations and knowledge and of course captain Santo who chose the best island hidden gem spots. The boat Salacia was beautiful and clean. It was so good we book a second trip that same week and definitely made our trip to Turks that much more memorable. We booked directly with them after finding them on Instagram. They were professional, timely and you could tell wanted to make this a trip of a lifetime! First off, the photos of the boat don’t even show how amazing it was! We felt so special getting picked up right in front of our hotel and all the other guests starring at us as we boarded this yacht! The crew from Caption Santos, Deckhands Jay and Tony were a blast. Amazing craft cocktails, local food and music that has us dreading the day ending! We snorkeled, saw iguana island, jumped off the ghost ship and of course had the crew take some Instagram worthy shots of us on Sand Dollar Island. When I say we loved it, I mean we loved it so much we booked another day charter for us two days later and brought the kids with us this time! Don’t hesitate in booking with Poseidon! Captain Ronald and First Mate Mario were first class, total professionals. We started with the booking process, which I did from Nola, it was easy and accurate. Once on the island our communication was easy and all went as expected. Andrea was fun to speak with and always available. Once on the boat, Ronald and Mario took over the 52 foot SeaRay and guided us to an outstanding day. My cousin and I rented an boat for an amazing day on the water on the Calypso: 3 snorkeling sites, a visit to a few islands, a tour of the Iguana Island, and a ship wreck. The Captain, Ronald, and the crew were wonderful - so fun and friendly; they made the day a joy! We were thrilled to be joined by Jojo the dolphin, who swam along side the boat on our return! From Andrea who booked our Charter, to Mario and Ronald (our Captain and First Mate) who were both conscientious and fun. Even the owner greeted us as we disembarked. We all had a wonderful time. We were shocked that the food they served was actually really delicious. And great champagne was served as well. That was another surprise. They were very accommodating in every way. Captains boat kept dying so I myself had to fix it . Learn more about Matt's personal life then about fishing in the sea. We are from oklahoma and was expecting a once in a life time experience from Florida like was said on the email while confirming my appointment. Got back to dock 12:45pm and guy in office didn't even try to make things right . Owner even gave me a call just to pretend to offer a full refund back ($450.00) which we never got anything back but just our time wasted. Worst way to spend $450 in 4 hours. Inspiring Young Sailors Through History

On Saturday, June 22 the lunchtime crowd at Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, CT was treated to a unique sight: two 12 Metres of 1980s vintage – America II and Lionheart. It was no small challenge maneuvering these boats, measuring 67 feet in length and drawing 9 feet, to the gas dock. These boats had come to Pequot through the generosity of the 12 Metre Yacht Development Foundation, based in Greenwich, CT.

The following morning, supported by three adult advisors provided by the Foundation and with a Pequot instructor on each of the boats, fifteen of Pequot’s young sailors, aged 14-17, took control of the boats: steering, calling the tactics and handling the sails. This event was part of Pequot’s junior big boat program, which is a separate segment of the club’s junior sailing program.

Pequot’s race committee, organized by Dan Nash, more than rose to the occasion in running a series of short windward leeward races off Southport harbor to keep the action tight. While it was America II prevailing over Lionhearted in light and variable winds, it proved to be an eye opening experience for both teams as they took on the task of handling these powerful boats.

But the fun didn’t end there. When the racing was done in the early afternoon, the Twelves returned to Southport harbor and were at the docks with full colors on display when the other junior sailors arrived for the commissioning of the Pequot Junior Yacht Club and the kickoff of the 2013 Junior Sailing Program. The sight of sailors and parents alike crawling all over these boats was pretty special.

Our junior sailors left a strong impression on volunteer advisors onboard the Twelves. “It was a pleasure and an honor to sail with you, demonstrating the thrill of these classic ladies, the 12′s,” said Paul Savage, the captain of America II. “It has taken us a great deal of effort to restore and preserve these beautiful boats and we were able to see, first hand, what competitive sailing can be for the young at heart.”

The 12 metre class was used in the america’s cup from 1958 through 1987, and pequot members played important roles in america’s cup competition, both during the 12 metre era and after. the timing of having the twelves in the harbor was special for pequot. it was 55 years ago this summer that the america’s cup was first sailed in 12 metres with columbia, skippered by pequot’s own briggs cunningham, beating great britain’s sceptre in a successful cup defense..

America II was the first of three Twelves by the same name commissioned by the New York Yacht Club for the 1987 America’s Cup, in an unsuccessful effort to be selected as the challenger. It has two wheels and was built as a heavy air boat for the 25+knots of breeze typical of the Indian Ocean off Freemantle, Australia, where the event was held. Lionheart was the British challenger in 1980 and was most notable as the first and only Twelve to sport a “bendy mast” in an effort to gain an advantage in the light winds normally found in Newport, RI.

The 12 Metre Yacht Development Foundation is a 501©3 charitable organization whose mission is to acquire, restore and preserve historic America’s Cup yachts to foster appreciation of the rich maritime history of the 12 Metre class. In addition, the Foundation is keenly aware of the link between America’s Cup 12 Metres and Long Island Sound, where many of these boats were built and where many of the skippers and crews came from. It has been devoting much effort in working the Long Island Sound junior programs to get their sailors into these boats.

Remembering the Pequot War in Fairfield

The Pequot War of 1637, the culmination of a struggle for control of trade and territory between the English colonists and the powerful Pequot federation, was a pivotal moment in the development of Connecticut. It is also considered America’s first “total war” in that it included attacks on whole villages and aimed to eliminate the Pequot from the region. In Fairfield, where the final battle of the Pequot War took place, the conflict has taken a firm place in the town’s identity.

“By the 1630s,” Kevin McBride and Laurie Lamarre note in “ Exploring and Uncovering the Pequot War ” (Fall 2013), the Pequot, whose home territory was southeastern Connecticut, “exerted control across southern New England. … Pequot influence extended along coastal Long Island Sound from Fairfield, Connecticut to Charlestown, Rhode Island,” eastern Long Island and up the Connecticut River Valley to the Massachusetts border, including all of eastern Connecticut. They subjugated dozens of Native tribes and controlled the fur and wampum trade with the Dutch. The arrival of English traders in the Connecticut River Valley challenged this balance of power, leading to tensions that ultimately erupted into war.

The final battle of the Pequot War, known as the Swamp Fight, took place in Fairfield in July 1637, when English forces caught up with Pequot forces led by the sachem Sassacus, who had taken refuge near the village of their Sasqua allies. The Sasqua, along with the Unquowa and Pequonnock, were part of the Paugussett tribe that occupied much of western Connecticut. Like a number of Native groups along the coast, they owed allegiance to the Pequot.

The English and their Native allies, the Narragansett and Mohegans, surrounded the swamp, fighting hand to hand throughout the day and night as Pequot and their Sasqua allies, held them back. The next morning, under cover of fog, approximately 60 to 80 Pequot broke through a section of the English lines and escaped. About 180 Pequot were eventually captured, and a dozen or more were killed.

Sassacus and his warriors fled north from the swamp, hoping to find refuge with allies in eastern New York. But the Mohawks captured them in late July and quickly killed them, sending Sassacus’s head to the English as a gesture of friendship. Eventually the surviving Pequot sachems surrendered.

The Treaty of Hartford in 1638 intended to wipe out the once powerful Pequot nation, outlawing the Pequot name and language. Some of the captured Pequot were sent to live among Native allies of the English, while others were enslaved in the West Indies or in New England households. The largest group was placed under the control of the Mohegan, who treated them so harshly that by 1655 the English moved them to their own area, eventually creating the first reservations in Connecticut: Mashantucket in 1666 and Lantern Hill in 1683. It would take another 300 years for the Pequot to regain political and economic power in their traditional homeland.

For the English, victory meant that they could start establishing new settlements along the coast. Colonial leader Roger Ludlow brought a small group of colonists from Windsor in 1639 to establish a town amidst what he is said to have called the “fair fields,” farmed by local Indians close to where he had fought in this last major battle. Other veterans of the war would follow him, settling in Fairfield and neighboring towns along the coast.

Local lore related to the battle survived in Fairfield well into the 19th century. In 1869, author P.D. Ridge wrote in A Story of Pequot Swamp that children were frightened into obedience by mentioning that Indians might “still lurk in the dark recesses of this dreaded forest.” Farmers would regularly unearth arrowheads and other battle artifacts when plowing their fields, according to Ridge.

By the late 19th century, Native people had virtually disappeared from Fairfield, but the war found a lasting place as part of the town’s historic identity. The Pequot name—originally forbidden by the terms of the treaty—now conferred a special mystique to streets, sites, and organizations around Fairfield. The Pequot Library, Pequot School, and the Pequot Inn were the first to use the name, to be followed in the 20th century by the Pequot Yacht Club, the Pequot Motor Inn, the YMCA’s Pequot Indian Guides and the Pequot Running Club. Indeed, the name Pequot is used so frequently in town that many residents assume that the Pequot Indians lived in Fairfield; the names of the actual local Paugussett peoples (such as Unquowa and Sasqua) are not as well known.

At the turn of the 20th century, heritage organizations in Fairfield erected monuments to memorialize the Swamp Fight and “the valor and victory of the colonist forefathers” who fought there. Past celebrations of Fairfield’s history—from the tercentenary celebration in 1939 to school pageants—have highlighted the Pequot War as the beginning of the town’s history. A 1968 re-enactment of the battle took an irreverent approach to this violent history, including a “Surrender Site” and a “Bury the Hatchet” site in the celebration.

The Fairfield Museum is taking the occasion of Fairfield’s 375th anniversary to explore this aspect of our history in greater depth, collaborating with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum’s Battlefields of the Pequot War project to create the exhibition The Pequot War and the Founding of Fairfield . Featuring archaeological finds, 19th-century prints, items reflecting Pequot and early American material culture, and a 3-D model depicting the battle, the exhibition explores the timeline, causes and consequences of the war, for both the English and the Pequots, and looks at the ways in which the memory of the war has informed Fairfield’s identity over time.

The Pequot War and the Founding of Fairfield is on view from October 15, 2014 to January 18, 2015. The Fairfield Museum is open daily from 10 to 4. For more information visit fairfieldhistory.org .

Pequot Yacht Club

Founded in 1920, Pequot Yacht Club is located in the historic district of Southport CT. Amidst the exquisite setting, Pequot actively promotes sailing in the greater community. Many of the sailors in the Junior Sailing program are non-members. Sailors from all over Fairfield County from the local high schools sailing teams practice and race 420s at Pequot in the Spring and Fall. Sea Scout Ship 84 is moored in Southport Harbor and Pequot provides its facilities for training programs.  Pequot also hosts young adults from FSW (Family Services Woodfield) through the Sailing with Neighbors Program. Pequot Yacht Club was established for the development of interest in sailing. Since that time, members have been active cruisers and racers in the sport at the regional, national and international levels. Today, the Club supports an active junior program, a large cruising fleet, Ideal 18s, a Dyer Dhow frostbite contingent and a growing fleet of pond yachts. Pequot Yacht Club has remained an organization focused on sailing. While sailing is the priority, the Club has a social side as well, with a galley and dining room for daily lunches and evening parties throughout the year. Our website provides details on our various programs. At Pequot we sail year round. There are always sailing activities taking place on the water or in the clubhouse.  If you’re sailing in the area, please come and visit. We have limited guest moorings available on "first-come basis". We provide fuel, water, ice and self service pump-out . We look forward to seeing you.

PEQUOT YACHT CLUB FOUNDED IN 1920

Pequot Yacht Club came to be through the efforts of Fred Bedford, in addition to Harold Lloyd, Johannes Schiott and Lawrence Craufurd. The first meeting of Pequot Yacht Club was held in the Greens Farms home of Fred Bedford on October 25, 1920. These Founding Fathers, in addition to a group of five or six interested sailors, agreed to form a yacht club for the purpose of reviving and promoting competitive sailing. In November 1920, a constitution and by-laws were drafted and ratified. Subsequently, the Club, consisting of 33 members, elected officers and set annual dues at $25.00  Although the initial meeting took place in Greens Farms, Connecticut, the history of the Pequot Yacht Club is unquestionably rooted in the history of nearby Southport Harbor which had been deepened in 1916 during construction of a golf course.

The Club’s first officers were authorized in November 1920 to negotiate the lease for the a building on the water in Southport, which was the PYC’s clubhouse from 1921 to 1926. 

In April 1921, at the Club’s next recorded meeting, the character of the Club’s early years was established.  The racing calendar was the primary issue.  The Club’s first racing fleet consisted of four “R” boats  (35 ft. sloops), five “K” boats, and one Star.   Over the years, the Club has remained as much as its founders envisioned: an organization devoted simply to sailing.

As early as 1923, Club members believed that an active junior program was the key to sailing's future.  In 1923, the Club sponsored the first junior regatta for crews under 18 in the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound. The first formal junior program at the Club was started the following summer.

By 1925 the original clubhouse was becoming overcrowded, and by September 1926, a four-story warehouse building had been converted into the two-story clubhouse used by the Club to this day.

The Atlantic class came to the Club in the fall of 1928 when a demonstration boat handily beat its Star competition.  Twenty Atlantics were ordered immediately.  In 1929 the Club ran the first Atlantic Class championship.

The Great Depression had a negative impact on the Club’s financial health and Senior membership dropped significantly.  However,  prior investment in a strong junior program was vindicated: by 1934 there were 116 junior members.

Although the Second World War made yachting a matter of secondary importance in Southport, the Club's Atlantics continued the tradition of vigorous participation in class racing. By 1949, Atlantic sailors from Pequot had won the national championships for eight of the decade's years.

During the fifties and sixties, the sailing auxiliary slowly became the dominant boat at the Club despite the continued vitality of class racing.  The auxiliaries were raced in various Club events, and also made their mark in events held outside of Southport. Of particular note was Brigg Cunningham’s victory in the 1958 America’s Cup with Columbia.

In the seventies, the Club’s priorities were still to be the junior program and sail boat racing with the seventies witnessing the consolidation of the cruising fleet as the pre-eminent Club fleet. Activities were to be few, but well executed, supported by a small staff and a modest budget.  After 50 years, the Club’s purpose had remained the same as it had been when it began in 1920.

Membership issues, and an accompanying sense of the Club bursting at its seams, occupied the Board of Governors for much of the eighties.  One of the membership issues discussed (and resolved) was that of the creation of joint membership for husband and wife, a controversial issue reflecting a trend in the greater society. The dominant racing scene at the Club during the eighties continued to be  the cruising fleet, but One-Design racing remained alive with a new fleet of Thistles, a class that had been absent from the Club since 1959.

By 1990, participation in cruising fleet racing was declining precipitously, but this was countered by a resurgence of popularity of One-Design sailing in Thistles.  At the same time, recognizing the need to make sailing attractive to a membership pressed by time and family commitments, a search was begun to find a new One-Design class for the adult sailing program at the Club. The search eventually led to the Ideal 18.  The success of PYC’s Ideal 18 program was recognized in 1993 by US Sailing, which noted the program's contribution to One-Design racing on Long Island Sound.

The club continues to produce many entries in many sailing events in the region and around the world.

Pequot Yacht Club is situated in Southport Harbor at the mouth of the Mill River.  Approaching our harbor and mooring field can be intimidating, and it is important that all vessels navigate within the federally marked channel.  The first vessels moored just past the break wall are part of the town of Fairfield anchorage.  All guests should proceed up the harbor toward the fuel dock and call our launch on VHF channel 69.  All moored vessels in our anchorage are secured both fore and aft.   Other than launch service we have a dinghy dock should visitors wish to use their own tender.  Mooring Reservations: Contact the Marine Department Manager Travis Herman @  [email protected]  or 203.255.5740, ext. 19. The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Rosatom Starts Production of Rare-Earth Magnets for Wind Power Generation

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom has started gradual localization of rare-earth magnets manufacturing for wind power plants generators. The first sets of magnets have been manufactured and shipped to the customer.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. These technologies will be undoubtedly in demand in other areas as well,” noted Alexander Korchagin, Director General of NovaWind JSC.
