Dubai International Boat Show 2024 at Dubai Harbour

Everything you need to know about Dubai International Boat Show 2024

In a report by renowned consultancy Knight Frank, Dubai anticipates a staggering 39 per cent surge in its ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWI) by 2026. Asserting its status as a premier destination for UHNWI and global tourists, Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) , the region’s largest marine lifestyle exhibition, stands as a testament to the city's popularity. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the global marine industry will descend on Dubai Harbour from 28 February to 3 March 2024, offering a spectacular backdrop for yachts up to 160 metres LOA and emphasising themes of marine sustainability and cutting-edge technologies.

What’s on at Dubai International Boat Show 2024?

Organised by the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), DIBS 2024 promises a dynamic showcase on both land and water, featuring hundreds of luxury yachts for visitors and investors alike. As a pivotal event in Dubai's yachting sector and annual calendar, DIBS offers valuable networking opportunities and a glimpse into the future of marine technology and design.

Over 1,000 brands are set to converge at this five-day extravaganza, with 200 boats expected on display, including premier shipyards such as Azimut , Cranchi , Gulf Craft , Ferretti , Princess , Sanlorenzo , Sunreef and Sunseeker . The international exhibition serves as a comprehensive platform for unveiling innovations, introducing new launches and fostering business prospects with global leaders and pioneers from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The 30th edition will once again host DIVE MENA , an exclusive show for the UAE and GCC diving community, along with a networking evening for captains and a celebration of local talent through the Proudly UAE initiative, honouring the country’s rich maritime heritage.

Supercar Avenue will showcase an exclusive lineup of the world’s most coveted cars, while the Marine Art Gallery will present a unique collection of sea-inspired pieces crafted by internationally renowned artists.

“VIP guests have the chance to go behind the scenes of the region's best-loved boat show for a bespoke AAA tour of the most premium selection of luxurious yachts, this platform redefines expectations,” says Trixie LohMirmand, executive vice president of the Dubai World Trade Centre. “Complementing this prestigious showcase, there is also an exclusive VIP lounge, where A-listers and industry experts meet and mingle in a luxurious lounge environment.”

The annual Middle East Yachting Conference (MEYC) is set to kick off the festivities on 27 February, providing a platform for yachting professionals and enthusiasts to delve into the industry’s most pressing topics and unify the entire sector.

Unmatched business opportunities

DIBS annually encapsulates the MENA region’s enviable position as one of the richest yachting landscapes globally, boasting the second-highest fleet-to-billionaire ratio. Currently home to 12.6 per cent of the world’s superyacht fleet, forecasts predict substantial expansion, with the luxury yacht market projected to grow from US$306 million in 2022 to an estimated US$481 million by 2028.

Dubai's allure extends beyond the yachting industry, with global investors and entrepreneurs increasingly choosing the city for their growing businesses and projects. The emirate’s attractive ecosystem for start-ups and entrepreneurs, long-term residency scheme, impeccable infrastructure and dynamic calendar of events contribute to its worldwide appeal.

“Exhibitors at Dubai International Boat Show 2023 unanimously reported strong lead generation and sales over the five-day event,” explains LohMirmand. “The Italian-headquartered Sanlorenzo Yachts closed three deals for a total value of AED 390 million (EUR 100 million), while Yachts 1, the official dealer of Princess Yachts, Sanlorenzo, Cranchi, SEABOB, Al Dhaen and Williams Jet Tenders, converted five deals valued at AED 78 million (EUR 20 million).

Shaping the future of yachting

Dubai’s global significance as an aspirational destination and power hub was reinforced when it hosted the UN Climate Change Conference, COP28, in late 2023. The conference concluded with a historic agreement to move away from fossil fuels across all sectors, including the marine industry.

“With the increased awareness of global sustainability challenges, there is a growing demand for sustainable investment as it not only contributes to positive global outcomes but also offers investors the potential for financial returns, risk mitigation and alignment with personal values,” says LohMirmand. “Key exhibitors such as Sunreef Yachts have confirmed they will bring all-electric yachts to the show to push the electric transition forward with Francis Lapp, the founder and president of Sunreef Yachts, highlighting that DIBS is a wonderful opportunity to promote a cleaner boating experience. Visitors can witness how luxury and sustainability can be combined.”

Tourism boom

Events like COP28 and DIBS have contributed to significant growth in the UAE's tourism sector, with hotel revenues reaching AED 32.2 billion up until September 2023, reflecting a growth rate of 27 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

“Dubai International Boat Show underlines this region’s passion for the maritime sector and Dubai’s ability to host events that bring the world together,” LohMirmand adds. “Growing from humble beginnings in 1992 to the internationally renowned experience that DIBS will be again in 2024 demonstrates how the show has developed alongside the unstoppable evolution of Dubai.”

Ohio brothers’ trip to Dubai leads to nightmare situation

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A night out in Dubai has become a real-life nightmare for two stranded Ohio brothers.

With its ultra-modern architecture and beautiful beaches, Ohio native, former US airman, and current social media influencer , Joseph Lopez , says Dubai seems like the perfect spot to get away for a few weeks.

“I came out here because I wanted to shoot content and Dubai seems like this very glamorous place,” Lopez explained.

Lopez says his brother, Joshua, tagged along for the trip they started on May 25.

About a week later on June 3, Lopez says everything went south.

The brothers went out for a night on the town and eventually ended up at a yacht party at the invitation of a new foreign friend.

After a short time on the boat, Lopez says he was hit with a massive bill, one he never agreed to.

At first, he was agitated thinking the issue was resolved.

“And then this girl brought me a drink and after she brought me this drink, I don’t remember anything,” Lopez claims. “Basically, she drugged us.”

The rest of the night was a blur.

“The next thing I remember, I’m in the back of a car and my brother says, ‘Do you want me to get you out of here?’” Lopez recalls. “And my arms were all scraped up and stuff and I’m like, ‘Where am I?’ I’m in the back of a car that’s locked.”

What the Ohio native says he did not realize at the time is that he was in a police cruiser. The men in the front seat were plain-clothed officers.

Lopez says he and his brother are accused of resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, and drinking alcohol, which is heavily regulated in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

He says despite being in police custody for days after their arrest, they didn’t take a breathalyzer test for 24 hours or a drug test for four days.

“Unfortunately, they’re both now facing potential charges and prosecution that could leave them both in prison for several years,” explains Detained in Dubai CEO Radha Stirling.

Detained in Dubai is an organization that has helped more than 20,000 people, including the Lopez brothers, facing legal issues while in the UAE, which Stirling says is falsely advertised as a Las Vegas of the Middle East.

Stirling says it has been more than a month now, but prosecutors have still not decided whether or not to officially move forward with charges against the Lopez brothers.

They are out on bond, but are under a travel ban.

For now, they are stuck living in Airbnb waiting to see what happens next.

“I just want to go home,” Lopez says. “Like I want to go home, and I want to go home soon”

A US State Department spokesperson says, “We have no higher priority than the safety and security of US citizens abroad. We are aware of the arrest of a US citizen in the United Arab Emirates. We take our role in assisting US citizens abroad seriously and are monitoring the situation. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment at this time.”

Electric abra: World’s 1st 3D-printed traditional wooden boat sets sail in Dubai

I n a move that blends ancient traditions with modern technology, Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the trial operation of the world’s first electric abra (a traditional boat made of wood) manufactured using 3D printing technology.

The 20-passenger vessel was manufactured by Abu Dhabi’s global maritime organization Al Seer Marine in collaboration with Tasneef Maritime, Japan’s Mitsubishi, and Germany’s Siemens and Torqeedo, according to an RTA press release on July 14.

The RTA said the abra was designed to retain its traditional identity while supporting Dubai’s 3D printing strategy , which aims to transform the UAE into a leading hub of 3D printing technology by 2030. This innovative approach is expected to reduce manufacturing time by 90 percent, slash costs by 30 percent, and cut operation and maintenance expenses by 30 percent.

The electric abra also aligns with RTA’s environmental sustainability strategy for maritime transport, aiming to reduce Dubai’s carbon footprint.

Technical specification and trial operation

Technically, the new abra boasts several notable features . It includes the longest monocoque structure (a design where the external skin supports the load) created using 3D printing technology, measuring 36 feet (11 meters) in length and 10.1 feet (3.1 meters) in width.

The vessel is powered by an electric propulsion system with two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, announced that the abra would begin trial operations at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line. “During this phase, we will monitor the abra’s performance and compare it with our current 20-passenger fiberglass abras,” Al Tayer stated.

RTA’s comprehensive modernization plan

While the electric abra represents the future of Dubai’s water transport, RTA is also focusing on enhancing existing infrastructure. As part of its master plan to improve marine transport services, the authority is upgrading four traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek.

Two stations have been completed, with the remaining two set for completion by August 2025. Improvements include new floating docks, expanded waiting areas, and enhanced accessibility features, aiming to better serve the 14 million annual passengers while reducing maintenance costs.

Progress on the upgrades has been steady. In February 2023, RTA completed improvements to the Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station, followed by the Deira Old Souq Station in February 2024. The remaining two stations—Dubai Old Souq and Al Sabkha—are scheduled for completion by August 2025.

The comprehensive improvement works include replacing floating docks to ensure passenger safety, providing retail spaces for enhanced customer services, and adding facilities for employees and operators. Bike racks will be installed to promote transport integration.

Passenger waiting areas will be expanded and improved, with priority seating and dedicated spaces for People of Determination. The project also involves widening docking spaces by 15 percent, increasing shaded waiting areas by 100 percent, and expanding commercial spaces by 27 percent. These changes will boost compliance with the Dubai Code by 87 percent.

The RTA said it will upgrade the stations using sustainable, low-cost materials, reducing annual maintenance costs by 10 percent.

These improvements, coupled with the introduction of the 3D-printed electric abra, demonstrate RTA’s commitment to modernizing Dubai’s traditional water transport while preserving its cultural heritage.

Dubai Princess Sheikha Mahra Announces Divorce From Royal Husband, Accuses Him of Being 'Occupied With Other Companions'

She seemingly accused him of infidelity via Instagram.

View this photo on Instagram

Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the daughter of UAE Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced her divorce from her husband and seemingly accused him of infidelity .

"Dear Husband, as you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce," she wrote in the post, which can be seen below. "I divorce you, I divorce you, and I Divorce You. Take Care. Your ex-wife." She married Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum last year, and they welcomed their first child together two months ago.

An Instagram post by hhshmahra. The post reads: "Dear Husband, As you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you. Take care. Your ex-wife."

Her post makes use of the controversial triple talaq, otherwise known as triple divorce, wherein an individual can be instantly divorced from their partner by saying it three times in a row. The practice is banned in a total of 23 countries, including India, where it was criminalized in 2019. It's typically not known for being used by women, however, and is not considered an option for women under Islamic law.

The family of the princess and her husband's family have yet to publicly comment on the matter, but The Independent reports that they've both since unfollowed each other on social media. There was initially speculation in the comments that she had been hacked, but the post has remained up for over a day at this point.

Speculation the couple was going through issues kicked off last month when she shared an image of her with her child accompanied by the caption, "Just the two of us."

At least 40 Haitians killed in boat fire, UN migration agency says

More than half a million Haitians have been internally displaced by gang violence that killed hundreds this year.

More Kenyan police deploy to tackle Haiti violence

At least 40 Haitians have been killed at sea and several people were injured after their boat caught fire, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

The boat, which was carrying more than 80 people, departed from Fort Saint-Michel in northern Haiti on Wednesday for the Turks and Caicos islands, a 250km (155-mile) journey, the IOM said on Friday, citing the country’s migration authority.

Interim pm conille forms new government in crisis-hit haiti, haiti to replace national police chief in effort to counter gang violence, kenyan police contingent arrives in haiti as protests roil nairobi, haitian women and girls face ‘alarming’ violence in displacement camps: un.

The boat caught fire off the coast of Cap-Haitien in Haiti’s north, according to the United Nations migration agency, which said 41 people were rescued by the Haitian coastguard. Eleven people were being treated for injuries, including burns.

People on the boat used matches to light candles in a ritual to ask for safe passage, leading gasoline-filled drums to catch fire and explode, Jean-Henry Petit, who heads the civil protection office in northern Haiti, told the Miami Herald newspaper.

“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women, and men migrating through irregular routes, demonstrating the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration,” said Gregoire Goodstein, IOM’s chief in the country.

Haiti has, for years, been roiled by violence with armed gangs fighting for control of territory. In February, gangs launched coordinated attacks in the capital, Port-au-Prince, taking control of police stations and key access roads, opening fire at the main airport, and forcing tens of thousands of people to flee.

More than 570,000 Haitians have been internally displaced as a result of the violence, according to the UN.

“Haiti’s socioeconomic situation is in agony. The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more,” said Goodstein.

Several hundred Kenyan police officers have arrived in Haiti as part of a UN-mandated mission to help police in the Caribbean nation fight the gangs.

The IOM said that more than 86,000 migrants and refugees have been forcibly returned to Haiti by neighbouring countries this year. In March alone, despite a surge in violence and the closure of airports throughout the country, forced returns increased by 46 percent, reaching 13,000 people.

Since February 29, the coastguard in the north has observed an increase in the number of attempts and departures by boat. Coastguards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos islands, and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at sea.

Barron Trump missing on father's big night at RNC

Portrait of Maria Francis

Surrounded by family on his big night at Republican Convention, Donald Trump accepted the nomination for the 2024 presidential race.

Melania Trump made a grand entrance ahead of Trump's acceptance speech in her first appearance at this week's RNC convention. She came alone, without the former First Couple’s son, Barron Trump.

During his speech, Trump thanked all his children “Don, Kimberly, Ivanka and Jared, Eric and Lara, Tiffany and Michael, Barron."

He added a shoutout to his absent son; "We love our Barron.” It drew a thunderous applause.

Trump also gave thanks to Melania Trump and his 10 grandchildren, many of whom were seen with him throughout the night.

One night earlier, Trump's eldest granddaughter, Kai Trump, 17 , spoke about her grandfather, describing him as " normal grandpa " that always asks about school and sneaks sweets and treats when her parents aren't looking.

Where was Barron Trump?

Although Barron Trump was invited with his brothers to attend the Republican National Convention as a Florida delegate, in May, his mother delivered a statement that he would not be able to attend due to prior commitments.

Barron Trump has been noticeably absent from his father's campaign trail; his first and last appearance was on July 9 at a campaign rally in Miami.

Barron Trump fans have been waiting on news of the 18-year-old’s college decision . His father said at that Miami rally that Barron had been accepted into all of the schools he wanted to attend.

After a standing ovation for Barron Trump during the July 9 rally, Donald Trump joked “You’re pretty popular; he might be more popular than Don and Eric, we gotta talk about this." (Don and Eric are Barron's older brothers.)

Barron Trump was not at the campaign  rally in Butler, Pennsylvania a few days later when a shooter attempted to assassinate  his father. Two people were killed, including the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks and a spectator,  Corey Comperatore . Two others were injured.
