- Phang Nga Bay is the bay between Phuket and the Malay Peninsula. This is renowned for its limestone spires and jaw-dropping scenery, and much protected as a national park. The James Bond movie The Man With the Golden Gun was filmed here, as was Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. You can even sail to 'James Bond Island'!

- Krabi is the mainland province to the east of Phuket and includes the major tourist destination of Ao Nang. Do try to get to Rai Leh Beach - a more refined tourist resort well away from the mad crowds of Ao Nang.

- The Phi Phi Islands have two sides to them - Phi Phi Island's Phi Phi Don's no limits nightlife on its sandy beaches and nearby Ko Phi Phi Lee where you will find the exquisitely beautiful Monkey Bay where monkeys come out of the forest to feed on crab and Maya Bay made famous in the Hollywood movie The Beach. This is all a protected national park.

- The Similan Islands and Surin Islands , northwest of Phuket on the Andaman Sea are a forgotten paradise that you will visit to enjoy nature at its best. Many reckon the scuba diving and snorkelling is some of the best in the world. This is a national park well worth the trouble of visiting on a luxury charter!

7 days - Phang Nga Bay and Ko Phi Phi: Over seven days you can see the islands around Phuket. Heading for Phang Nga Bay on the first night, then Ko Hung, Ko Kai, and Ko Phi Phi, you will see some of the most beautiful sights of the Andaman Sea. The limestone cliffs and places like Maya Beach made famous by Hollywood on this island hopping adventure are sights you'll never forget.

10 days - Similan Islands and Surin Islands: Island hopping north up Thailand's west coast you will visit one of the best scuba diving locations in the world. There are no resorts or hotels ashore - kept as national parks they are unspoiled and left to nature. Most of the islands are uninhabited, so there will be the opportunity to drop anchor and have the beach to yourself. Did we say diving and snorkelling? Yes, thanks to the rare and endangered species of marine life that live here, you're likely to see fish that you'd never see even on other tropical island yacht charters.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Phuket

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Thailand runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The winter monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between November to March you will find the winds are from the NE and rarely get over Force 4.

If you can get to Thailand outside of school holidays you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded. Could you consider doing a Thailand yacht charter early in the Southwest Monsoon? Though the SimilanIslands are out of reach (as is anything west of Phuket) it is quieter in May - July, though this is the beginning of the rainy season that intensifies in July and runs right through til October.

The Climate

North East Monsoon: Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in Thailand never get too strong in the sailing season. Expects winds of F2-4 from the NE and it to be generally dry.

Southwest Monsoon: This runs from May to October and is the rainy season in this part of the world. Between May and July, expect winds up to F6 and changeable, and rain anything from every afternoon (or none at all) to solidly for your two weeks. Between July and October this is storm season with cyclones hitting the country and rain being almost guaranteed.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Phuket?

There are four marinas in Phuket - Ao Po Grand Marina, Yacht Haven Phuket, Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket BoatLagoon. All four have large charter fleets and can accommodate superyachts of up to 80 metres.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Phuket?

It is possible to sail out of Phuket year round. While the best time is between November and February during the Northeast Monsoon, you can enjoy your sailing vacation from Phuket Island as late as May in the early stages of the southwest monsoon. You won't be able to sail to the Surin Islands or anything west of Phuket as the seas are exposed to the weather.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Phuket?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Phuket?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skipper on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Phuket is an island off of the South West of Thailand , attached to the mainland by a bridge and one of Thailand’s larger islands – bustling with life without compromising the serenity you find on their beaches. 

There is no shortage of things to do in Phuket: known for its temples, beaches, Muay Thai, and yoga retreats and can be the perfect place for a variety of sailing holiday types – if you know where to look.

For Families

Phuket is a wonderful destination for families to visit. The locals are friendly and there are a plethora of activities to do – from exploring the Big Buddha and other temples to building sandcastles and paddling on spectacular beaches (we recommend Kamala beach). 

There are excursions stopping at free-roaming monkey temples – perfect for your own little monkeys to explore – and elephant sanctuaries such as the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket – which offer the experience of a lifetime bonding with these gentle giants. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is a true rescue center, with dedicated volunteers working toward the liberation and safe housing of circus/ex-performance elephants and mistreated logging/worker elephants. We encourage you to please, check the ethics of any wildlife centre before visiting.

Other family favorites include longtail boat experiences – these large, canoe-shaped vessels are part of Thailand’s tourism image and are used for tourists, ferries, carrying cargo, and more. These boats are often used in excursions to Koh Panyee – the famous ‘floating village’ in Phang Nga Bay – another family favorite. On the floating village, you will find families, schools, restaurants, and markets, and learn all about this unique culture and way of life. 

Phuket Old Town is bustling and provides many experiences for families with young children, as does the highly commercialized town of PaTong. 

This neon-lit, beachside town is bustling with plenty of watersports and beach activities to do – as well as a shopping paradise complex and other shops throughout the town. With this being said, the area is famed for its wild nightlife (especially on Bangla Road, which acts more like a “party strip”). We recommend avoiding Bangla Road when traveling with young teens and children .

For Couples

Phuket is full of activities for couples – from wellness activities such as sunset yoga and on-the-beach massages, to trail hiking or night markets (we love Chivilla Road for a more romantic location, with live music, incredible offerings of fresh food and an atmosphere that’s hard to beat).

Or, head to the south of Phuket toward Karon beach – the largest beach in Phuket, with shallow waves rolling in – Kata Noi is Karon’s quaint, more intimate neighbor. Between the two beaches lies Kata beach, which is slightly quieter than Karon, but a little larger, and with more on its doorstep than Kata Noi.  

For a tranquil romantic experience , we recommend mooring at Tonsai Bay, Ko Phi Phi Don (part of the Phi Phi Islands). Discover Maya Bay Tours (the actual beach where Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Beach’ was filmed) and the cozy – and quite breathtaking- Nui Beach cove, snorkel the pristine waters surrounding each of the Phi Phi Islands or simply grab a beach towel, hat, swimwear and sun cream – and head to any of the spectacular, soft sand beaches – for some blissful relaxation time. 

If you’re looking to enhance your Thailand yacht charter experience, we recommend hiring a sea kayak or paddleboard – perfect for viewing caves and coastlines together and make for a wonderful partner activity. 

For First-Time Sailors

Phuket is a level 2 sailing experience with Sunsail, meaning you need to have 10 days or 200 miles as a skipper on an equivalent-size yacht. 

If your family or yacht-mates are new to sailing , there may be some choppy tides but overall it is a good place to start. 

Ao Po Grand Marina and Ko Naka Noi make for easy sailing, however, we recommend checking the weather forecast regularly – especially when heading between Phuket and islands such as PhiPhi and Ko Racha Yai.

For Large Groups

Phuket has no end of exciting things for all group sizes, starting with our phenomenal fleet of yachts, which includes the Sunsail 454L catamaran. This yacht is our largest offering in Thailand, with 4 cabins housing up to 11 people, and with plenty of deck space, to boot! If you after after multiple yachts, or want to make up your own flotilla (for particularly large groups), we recommend getting in touch with one of our holiday planners.

Hen and Stag Do’s have the infamous party strip – Bangla Road – to explore, drink and dance the night away if they so wish. Many Restaurants in the Pa Tong area are big enough to seat large parties (although we recommend booking in advance, where possible). 

The same can be said for Phuket Old Town; with its beautiful, bright-colored buildings, often painted with murals and street art. The Old Town offers visitors the chance to experience walking tours, road markets, open shrines and stunning architecture. 

Other experiences for large groups, outside of the cities and large towns, include zip lining and jungle adventures such as Hanuman World, or exploring Cave Shrines such as Wat Suwan Huka (the Buddha Cave, or Suwan Khuha Temple) which is north of Phuket – just over a 1-hour drive from Ao Po Grand Marina.

There are a variety of things to do in Phuket, from experiencing Thailand’s incredible scuba diving spots , magical wildlife, and animals to see to scouring the most delightful dining experiences and best beaches for switching off – we have you covered. 

• Hit the beaches and relax; our top 5 on the mainland for relaxation are: Surin Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Kamala Beach, Nai Harn Beach, and Freedom Beach. 
• Explore nearby islands such as Koh Kao Yai and Ko Yao Noi (discover Sandbank Beach and Ao Sai Beach whilst there), Coconut Island , Ko Phi Phi , Koh Racha Yai, and Ko He (where you will find the famous Banana Beach) or the further-afield Ko Lanta (worth sailing to for exquisite dining, snorkeling and diving, rainforests and quiet beaches).
• Attend a wellness spa or yoga class – there is no shortage of them on the island!
• Swim and Snorkel (non-scuba diving) Experiences.
• Get a massage on the beach (we recommend Let’s Relax on Karon Beach). Although more expensive than at a parlor, the experience is serene and still far less expensive than the cost of a massage in the UK. 
• Discover the many temples and shrines on Phuket – including the Big Buddha, Chaithararam Temple – Wat Chalong, or Phra Thong Temple.
• Hike up waterfalls : Bang Pae Waterfall, Ton Sai Waterfall, Kathu Waterfall
• Meet the *Local Wildlife : including the rescue of Elephants at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket, Monkeys of the Temple in Wat Suwan Kuha and spectacular birds at Phuket Bird Park.
• Do day excursions that take you to James Bond Island, Koh Panyee floating village and kayaking through tiny island caves.

Although warm year-round, the best time to visit Phuket is during the dry season – between November and April, this is when the air is less humid and the average temperatures range between 24°C – 34°C.

The surrounding ocean is at its calmest and most optimum for sailing conditions during this season.

The sailing conditions in Phuket change dramatically with the seasons – the dry season being much more gentle at sea than the rainy season. At Sunsail, we require you to meet our level 1 sailing experiences to charter a bareboat yacht in Phuket. You may hire a skipper , if you are not qualified or wish to have someone sail the yacht for you.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

The Lagoon 60 sailing catamaran, was reviewed on a sea trial in the crystal-clear waters off Manorca, Spain, ahead of its Cannes Yachting Festival premiere.

The Beneteau Oceanis 37.1, with its APAC premiere in March, offers great volume and performance while retaining ease of use – a hallmark of this sailing line first launched in 1986.

RACING reports include a round-up of the multi-leg Season 4 of SailGP; and the New York Vend é e – both foiling-race events.
