The visionary custom yacht designs that have shaped Vismara Marine over 30 years

  • Toby Hodges
  • June 3, 2016

After three decades of producing light and innovative custom yachts, this Italian yard is developing a new ‘prêt-a-porter’ concept. Toby Hodges investigates

vismara sailing yachts

Vismara Marine has always been an exciting, fresh and different company. Its yachts are fast, light and inspirational designs. To look at the history of this Italian custom yacht specialist is to track the timeline of the modern cruiser-racer. And looking at its models today offers insight into where yacht design is headed. Here is a firm that is consistently ahead of its time.

Over the past three decades Vismara Marine has launched over 130 custom yachts from its Viareggio yard, many of which are now regarded as iconic designs. Names such as Pistrice , Alligator and Kiribilli resonate because of the way they combine style and function, able to win on the racecourse despite carrying a cruising interior.

News that Vismara is expanding with the launch of its first series-produced model, the V50 prêt-à-porter encouraged us to travel to Italy for a test sail – see our boat test HERE .

Viareggio is the nucleus of Italian boatbuilding. A visit to this Tuscan town near Pisa guarantees a moment of disbelief when first you see the tops of flybridges and multi-spreader rigs towering above the skyline of the town centre buildings. Some of the powerhouses of superyachting reside in disproportionate scale within Viareggio’s modest centre, including Benetti, Perini Navi and Azimut. And nestled into its bustling waterfront lies this rather special yard, Vismara Marine.

The man behind the brand

Varie_foto Giuliano Sargentini (3)

While Vismara dedicated the 1980s to designing IOR racers, for him the 1990s were all about ‘beautiful boats’.

“We decided we could make a company dedicated to giving to cruising people the right to sail properly like the racing guys,” he says. The Nineties saw a surge in clients who wanted minimalist interiors: no teak; and white painted throughout. These were state of the art boats built in light composite construction, some with radical features such as canting keels and wingmasts.

Up until 2003 Vismara designed for other builders and built for other designers at the Marine Services yard. But then he decided “to create a brand and be responsible for the cycle of design, production and resale”. Vismara Marine was born.

Varie_foto Giuliano Sargentini (1)

This shared construction relationship helps explain why Vismara was so busy during our visit. Hulls arrive at Viareggio either bare, or fitted with furniture, and to a very impressive level of finish. “Until now we averaged two to four boats a year, 100 per cent tailor-made,” says Vismara. “The new business plan is to keep that range of custom boats and to grow the prêt-à-porter side. We think in two years’ time we can be up to ten boats a year.”

What’s in the yard?

New builds and refits spilt out of the yard’s lofty sliding doors. Indeed, a powerful-looking new Vismara Mills 56 cruiser was due to be christened the day after our visit. There were also two new V62s, a 50ft custom Vismara and the second V50 in the shed, plus five Baltic Yachts refits from 50-80ft.

As well as working closely with Baltic Yachts for nearly three decades, Vismara has worked with some of the industry’s leading design firms, including Farr, Judel- Vrolijk and Bill Tripp. Its latest collaborations are with Mark Mills, who Vismara rates highly for his vision, dedication and enthusiasm.

When listing the designs his yard has produced over the years (see below), Vismara described the Mills-designed V62 SuperNikka as his ‘perfect boat’. A Vismara, he says, is all about CFD-analysed design, pre-preg hulls and composite interiors that form part of the boat. He believes in keeping interiors light and avoiding heavy, complicated systems.

SuperNikka

Vismara produced a fully hybrid 50-footer six years ago, radical still today. “We have always tried to push clients to a more modern, current approach – while creating the commercial value by trying to avoid fancy requests,” declares Vismara. “Why are we good at custom? We are good at listening and understanding.”

A custom approach

“I love the preliminary stages – to learn about the client, to create a relationship,” Vismara explains. “But now owners don’t like so many meetings – everyone is time poor. Plus they are scared to make an error.”

Radical modern interior of Luce Guida

Radical modern interior of Luce Guida

Vismara is still very much a yard focused on custom builds, but the decision was recently made to invest in creating a ‘prêt-à-porter’ line of female-moulded yachts. “Many clients don’t have the experience to buy a custom boat now,” Vismara maintains, adding that the new line of boats “use the same high technology, but are built in a standardised design and promoted through a network of dealers”.

As well as the V50, the yard is creating more prêt-à-porter production models off the back of custom projects. The radical V62 SuperNikka , is a very current example. She launched last year and won the Mini Maxi worlds. A mould has since been taken with the chine smoothed out, and two more V62s were in the yard at fit-out stage.

Past iconic Vismara models include yachts such as Kiribilli , a 60ft ‘maxi’ developed with Renzo Piano, and the 54ft fast cruiser Brizella . But this V50 is the start of a fresh new era, “a type of boat that has not existed before”.

Iconic designs

PISTRICE-71

Pistrice – a V40 launched in 1992. Designed for IMS racing – “the first real proof that you can win races like the Sardinia Cup with a cruising boat, and that you could sail like a racer,” declares Vismara. She won the IMS Italian Championships and Champagne Mumm Cup in 1993.

2000 Kirribilli

Kirribilli – the green and gold flush-decked 60ft design was developed with Renzo Piano as a fast cruiser with mini-maxi characteristics. Launched in 2001.

Dragon 2 – ‘Gold Dragon’ – “Totally Vismara, with a minimalistic very current design,” comments Vismara. Striking features include her wraparound coachroof windows, gold and red styling and a central engine under the saloon table.

RED CARPET Enquiry

Hi Colin, the time we spent on board of Red Carpet has been great. The crew has been excellent still funny and cautious as well as excellent with our kids. I can only release positive feedback, no negative. Boat is comfortable, in particular the main deck with enough space and amenities both for wind and no wind. The only negative point has been weather, we did face strong wind at the beginning and calm in the second part of our cruise, so not that much sailing but a lot of engine. This is not in the hand of crew or captain so we finally did enjoy the time spent onboard. A.G. RED CARPET / Portisco / 14 August 2021

Mark Mills on the Vismara V62 SUPERNIKKA

  • July 14th, 2018

There are seldom boat designs that let you stand there, frozen, watching with awe and excitement, leaving you speechless. The Vismara V62 Mills is such a boat, at least the SUPERNIKKA has a drastic impression on myself: She is so breathtakingly beautiful, from every angle, her lines are well balanced but aggressive and extreme at the same time. She is an absolutely beautiful and exciting boat – from the first moment that I watched her on YouTube I was bewitched. What is the story behind her?

vismara sailing yachts

I am happy that her designer, Californian-born Mark Mills, agreed to talk to me on the phone about the V62 design, his approach in conceiving the boat´s attractive design and the collaboration with the Italian yard Vismara. I find Mills in a relaxed and talky mood and not wanting any of his precious time, instantly began to go through my set of questions.

“I like to be in control of all creative aspects of yacht design.”

NO FRILLS SAILING.com | Lars Reisberg: “Mark, please tell me how and why you´ve decided to become a naval architect? Where did you study and what have been the principal steps of your career?”

Mark Mills: “Oh, that is a bit if a long story, I fear: When I grew up back in California I didn´t had anything to do with sailing or yachts at all. I love airplanes and airplane design. I wanted to become an aircraft designer. When my family moved to Ireland my parents registered me in a yacht club without my knowledge and this is finally how I got to sail. I loved it and over the time I realised that instead of an aircraft designer who is just a small part of a huge team in becoming a naval architect I would be able to work on my own without this big overhead. This was very attractive for me, so I did it.”

vismara sailing yachts

NFS.com: “That means you like to be the boss?”

Mark Mills: “No, not in this sense. I would say I like to be in full control over all creative aspects of what I do. You see, at least when it comes to hull design – I really don´t care that much for the colours of the cushion, but when it comes to the shape, I´d like to be responsible and in control.”

NFS.com: “Where did you learn the tools of the trade?”

Mark Mills: “Oh, that´s a pretty much ordinary and straightforward career I would say. I acquired a Bachelor of Arts in the US and later studied Naval Architecture in Southampton. But I won´t say that this did such a great impression on me. The real school I went through was the people I´ve met along the way, the sailing I did and the experience I gained. I didn´t found the education at the Universities that much valuable for myself, I must admit. It was more the people.”

NFS.com: “Mills Design Company is, as far as I know, only working on performance yachts, mostly race-connected and in the high-priced semi-custom and custom/one-off level. Where lies the attraction in accepting just jobs of this kind? Why no production boats, cruisers for example?”

Mark Mills: “Well, in most cases you are right. But we´ve also done some production boats as well but always with a strong affection for racing yachts. That is what I love to do. But anyway, I am a service provider and I can be hired by everyone. For example, a number of years ago we did pitch at Beneteau for the First 30 . I would also enjoy working with the larger production boat companies, you just have to find a project or niche where your set of skills matches theirs.”

“SUPERNIKKA is an incredibly successful yacht.”

NFS.com: “Let´s talk about V62 SUPERNIKKA, Mark. She is what I would say the most beautiful yacht I´ve seen in years. Her lines are just breathtaking. When and how was the V62 born? What was the general idea behind this yacht?”

Mark Mills: “Oh, thanks for the credits. I like SUPERNIKKA very much as well and I agree that she is a special boat for sure. In fact, the V62 SUPERNIKKA was my first collaboration with Vismara yard and I was hired in 2013 by Alessandro Vismara to come up with some ideas for a client of him who wanted to acquire his own racing yacht. Up to this point this owner had three designs of Alessandro Vismara, but together they decided to take the next step …”

NFS.com: “… which became SUPERNIKKA. What was the design brief on that boat?”

vismara sailing yachts

Mark Mills: “Yes, absolutely right. The briefing was simple but in it´s own sense complicated: The owner wanted a yacht that had to be optimized for the Mediterranean. Which is a thing for itself, because sailing in the Med means that you ought have to have a boat capable of performing in a light breeze as well as in strong winds, a boat that should be fast on a reaching and running point of sail but has to be as well powerful in beating upwind. Which is not very easy to combine, you know? Racing boats are normally very specialized on one particular thing. If you for example look at the IMOCA LINO or Class 40-boats , these are downwind yachts which are usually terrible in sailing upwind …”

NFS.com: “… I know what you mean . So, SUPPERNIKKA had to be a good allrounder then?”

Mark Mills: “Absolutely yes. Which by the way is exactly what I love to do. You see, I hate being bad at one thing even when I am good at all the others. Making a design that can sail fast on one point of sail but being slow on another – even if this boat is just participating in downwind races – can feel a little wrong to me. So in a certain way, the design brief on the V62 was exactly what I loved to do. But another aspect was making my work harder: The owner wanted a fast racing yacht but at the same time a fully cruising-capable yacht on which he could go out on leisure sailing with friends and his family.”

vismara sailing yachts

NFS.com: “Why makes it working on the design harder?”

Mark Mills: “Because cruising means you´ll need a proper equipped interior . Stuff like joinery, stowage, a galley. In short: Weight. But with a racing boat we like to be as light as possible. So in brief, that was the task with V62 SUPERNIKKA. But in the end I think we´ve done a fantastic job, the yacht is incredibly successful and besides her winning the races she participates she is also an incredibly nice cruising yacht. All in all three boats have been built and sold up to now and recently with Vismara we´ve come up with a V67 that has a similar design balance.”

“The V62 SUPERNIKKA is a pretty straightforward racing yacht design after all.”

NFS.com: “Can you explain the main features of the V62-design and give some insights into her construction? What makes the V62 unique in your eyes?”

Mark Mills: “Well, you see, first of all I would state that I think the V62 is a pretty straightforward racing yacht design. I don´t think that there is too much of special things in her construction. You see, that is also the reason why I like working with Vismara – instead of fancying new technologies, materials and other bling-bling-stuff, they focus on the job and want to deliver a serious product to their clients. That´s also my approach: I´d like to come up with ideas that work out in the first place. So, speaking of SUPERNIKKA, the boat is really balanced I would say. I think in naval architecture it is always about balance. The boat is very good in what it was meant to be good: She is a terrific racing yacht for racing both inshore and offshore and a good cruiser. As with all boats, you try to narrow down the wetted surface and have a long waterline – this makes a boat fast in light winds. Then, in stronger winds, when the boat heels, your hull shape will increase wetted surface, add stability and enable the boat to go fast as well. This is what we´ve done with SUPERNIKKA as well.”

vismara sailing yachts

NFS.com: “She has a very wide stern with some 5 metres width and the boat also features some very nice hard chines …”

Mark Mills: “… take a look at the chines, that´s an interesting detail, because we´ve come up with a nice solution here. Adding hard chines in the stern usually improves downwind performance and the tendency to plane. But in going upwind, hard chines will make the boat slowing down. So the height of the chines is critical. In SUPERNIKKA we´ve decided to have them put a bit higher and it works pretty well.”

NFS.com: “What about the appendages on V62?”

Mark Mills: “Again, pretty straightforward I would say. You see, we do not follow any fancy trends. For example, we went for a single rudder blade just because there is no need to have a double rudder-solution here. As long as the blade is submerged at any heeling angle you are fine with it. By the way, in the latest Wally Cento the boat was built with a single rudder instead of the proposed double bladed-design. Again, I think people love the boat partially because she is a down-to-earth design. She is beautiful because she works. We don´t have to go on a certain fancy style.”

NFS.com: “Your company has over the years after V62 had a long tradition in submitting designs to the Vismara-yard in Italy. What makes Vismara and the people behind this company special? Why is Mills plus Vismara such an unbeatable formula?”

“Vismara yard delivers the most Bang for the Buck.”

Mark Mills: “First of all I would say that the relation between the builder and the designer is very important for the outcome of any project. Both have to fit the needs of a client. There are clients who for example just don´t care about technological stuff or material and other clients need a builder that is also submitting new ideas to a project in terms of technology or production techniques. So I find it to be one of my jobs to introduce to my clients a builder that generally fits the needs of the client because it is always a different solution for every new customer. The Vismara yard and Alessandro Vismara in particular have been a good choice in this sense: Because they care about their customers and try to answer all of their question in the right way. In the end, the finished product is always a very enjoyable boat – with a very, very reasonable price tag.”

NFS.com: “Can you be more specific in this respect?”

Mark Mills: “Well, you see, one-off yards tend to come up with more extreme solutions which for racers is part of the game. A new material here, a new production method there. It is a cost driver and the boats become more expensive all the time. This sort of disconnects us from the sailing world ever so much. Even in the relatively high-price segment of racing yachts, the boats become very, very expensive. Vismara yard on the other hand has a very different approach. As I said, the boat is pretty straightforward in the design – so it is in the production and material. She is made from Carbon fibres and foam core. The yard used material and methods which are reasonable – and delivered a very cost-effective product. The do what they do with the budget in mind. Besides, Vismara has a long standing tradition in making high performance yachts.”

NFS.com: “Vismara is also known for making the boats in carbon fibre …”

Mark Mills: “… which in my eyes is the best solution when it comes to building yachts like these. GRP or E-glass will generally make the boat much more a heavy weight. Carbon on the other hand delivers less weight and at the same time will be much more rigid, which is a definitive must-have with performance boats. By the way, for boats this size, the relative cost of the material like carbon fibre is of less and less concern as this is not such a big driving factor in the budget. I would say that carbon fibre in combination with foam material is way the best solution for a racer cruiser and this is what I like best about Vismara: They are always striving to get the most boat for the client at the most cost-effective and efficient way.”

vismara sailing yachts

NFS.com: “Which applies as well to the interior design, doesn´t it?”

Mark Mills: “Yes, absolutely and this is where Vismara also has it´s strengths. They do have a very, very good design office that is specialized in using available space and come up with great solutions for utilizing the inner volume of a yacht. They also doing it in a very smart way and they have done a great job with SUPERNIKKA´s interior.”

“SUPERNIKKA is pretty much the perfect yacht for me.”

NFS.com: “Mark, you have sailed in the V62 already, what is it like to be on your design for the first time and having her sailing as a real boat in real water?”

Mark Mills: “I can tell you, for me it is always like a rollercoaster ride. On the one hand I am happy to having the project finally hitting water, on the other hand I always am nervous until I know it will perform. There is always a sense of anxiety within me although I know that this is unreasonable. Anyway, SUPERNIKKA was performing just awesome, until now she has won many races and two of the three Maxi World Championships in which she participated.”

vismara sailing yachts

NFS.com: “What would you change on the V62-design if you had been given total freedom?”

Mark Mills: “You never finish. That´s because boats are always about finding the right balance. So, would I change the hull shape? Maybe a bit. Would I change sail plan or other things? Well, there are some minor details, of course. But in general I must say that the V62 is pretty well done and very well balanced. She does what she is supposed to do in a very, very satisfactory way. I wouldn´t change too much”

NFS.com: “You have done some extraordinary projects so far in your career and Mills designs are regularly seen on winning positions ins races all over the Oceans. What is your most beloved design of them all if you look back?”

Mark Mills: “You always love all of your children, as the saying goes and therefore I like all of my designs. Although some of them are sticking out, yes. I like the Maxi 72 ALEGRE very much and the 40 IRC TIAMAT is also a pretty nice boat, as well as the Wallycento TANGO. And in this part the SUPERNIKKA is also a boat which sticks out very much. So, these would be among my most beloved boats. By the way, it is a special joy for me to see that the V62-concept has generated some offspring: Currently the Cape 31, a smaller development of the SUPERNIKKA hull style is built in South Africa and I think this is wonderful. Especially for me as a designer, seeing things work out fine is good, but seeing them taking new shapes, new direction is a great achievement.”

Boat explodes in Marina del Rey

100-foot yacht explodes in marina del rey.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A boat is completely destroyed after exploding in Marina del Rey .

Firefighters say two people safely got out of a 100-foot-long yacht. Neither were hurt in the massive fire, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

SkyFOX was over the scene around 8:45 p.m. when the boat was engulfed in flames.

12 adults, 11 children rescued after boat runs aground in Boston Harbor

BOSTON (WHDH) - Emergency crews rescued 12 adults and 11 children Wednesday evening after a boat ran aground in Boston Harbor.

A Massachusetts State Police spokesperson said the incident happened at 6 p.m. at Rainsford Island.

Boston police and state police personnel responded. Though everyone was rescued, a Boston EMS spokesperson said one adult was taken to an area hospital after she suffered a shoulder injury.

A Somerville youth hockey team was having a good time aboard the La Bella Vita boat when the vessel hit a cluster of rocks near the island. A hole was ripped in the hull of the boat.

The marine towing company, Sea Tow, responded and worked to try to recover the boat that ran aground. Though police said crews stabilized the vessel, they were not able to fully salvage it.

On Thursday, all that could be seen peeking out of the water was the boat’s flybridge, due to the high tide. However, it was low tide when the boat hit the rocks Wednesday.

A Sea Tow representative said crews plan to return to Rainsford Island on Thursday in hopes of towing the boat to shore.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police had assumed control of the investigation into the incident.

Boat user reported for speeding 10 times over limit

vismara sailing yachts

Police have reported a man riding a personal watercraft at 10 times the legal speed limit.

The boat user launched the craft at the River Colne at Brightlingsea Creek, between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, and sped up to about 40 knots (46 miles) per hour in a four-knot (4.6 mile) speed limit, according to Essex Police.

Marine officers stopped the man at Ray Creek on Saturday and reported him to Colchester City Council, which enforces the local water bylaws.

Sgt Alex Southgate said: “Brightlingsea Creek is the entrance to a very busy harbour and the speed limit keeps everyone safe by reducing the risk of collisions and injury."

The marine team were taking part in regular patrols to crack down on anti-social behaviour on the water, as well as supporting the Colne Smack and Sailing Barge Match.

As a result of the match, there were significantly more boats and water users in the area, according to Sgt Southgate.

He said officers had worked closely with Brightlingsea Harbourmaster this year, including joint patrols.

"But, although the number of reports and incidents of anti-social behaviour on the water has reduced since we started our regular summer patrols along the coast in 2022, we still see instances where people put themselves and others at risk," he said.

“We ask that personal watercraft riders and people in boats keep to the speed limits and bear the safety of other water-users in mind."

MAGA Boat Parade Dude Snaps At CNN Reporter: 'Nobody Gave Me S**t!'

Ron Dicker

General Assignment Reporter, HuffPost

A MAGA boat parade participant got salty at a CNN correspondent’s suggestion that he was well off and might not be so affected by economic concerns. (Watch the video below.)

Elle Reeve conducted the interviews with a Panama City, Florida, flotilla of Donald Trump supporters and shared them on host Anderson Cooper ’s show Wednesday.

Reeve asked one man what his most important issue was for the election. “The economy,” he replied. “Getting interest rates down, getting it where we can afford to live in America. Right now, it’s too expensive.”

Reeve then goaded him a bit.

“OK now, let me maybe ask like a slightly impolite question. ... If you can afford a boat, you’re not hurting so bad, right? Because a boat costs a lot of money and it’s a lot of upkeep.”

“Listen, nobody gave me shit!” he replied. “I earned everything that I’ve got. I’m retired military, retired power plant, and I am successful and retired with boats, jet skis because I did it right, and everybody has that chance. Whether they choose or not, that’s up to them.”

Reeve kept at it: “I would never try to take anything away from you in that way, but what I’m asking is groceries are probably a smaller part of your budget than, say, you know, someone who’s, like, a little worse off. I think it’s interesting that people who are a little bit more comfortable are still so concerned about the economy. Do you see what I’m saying?”

“Because I want my money to go further,” the MAGA man answered. “I want inflation to go down, I want interest rates to go back down. I want all that, but that covers everybody in the economy. Not just me, not just the poor, not just the rich. It covers everybody.”

Reeve noted general concerns from voters that their children won’t be able to afford a house or a car.

Not a problem for him, the guy said.

Ithaca Fire Department receives $250K for new rescue boat

ITHACA (WBNG) -- $250,000 is coming to the Ithaca Fire Department.

New York State Senator Lea Webb announced the funding on Wednesday. The funding will go toward the purchasing of an all-purpose rescue boat to replace to department’s current one.

The new boat will be able to rescue up to eight people. It is designed to provide firefighting capabilities for boat, marina and shore-based fires.

Ithaca Mayor Robert Cantelmo said the funding is pertinent to the safety of the city and for people who go out on Cayuga Lake.

“This latest grant for the fire boat is a critical piece of equipment for our department,” Mayor Cantelmo said. “Cayuga Lake is, as the Senator noted, a real treasure in this community and we love people being able to enjoy it.”

Additionally, the fire department said the new boat can assist with hazmat responses.

It will be stationed at Treman Marina on the outside of Cayuga Lake.
