Turtle Canyon Adventure Sail

Explore waikiki’s coral reefs.

This morning sail takes you to Turtle Canyon, where you’ll get to swim around Waikiki’s most pristine coral reefs and get up close to turtles, tropical fish and other stunning marine life. Our crew of friendly PADI-certified divers will make sure you don’t miss anything. Turtle Canyon is famous for its many large turtles, but it’s also brimming with hidden creatures like tako or heʻe (octopus) and wana (sea urchin, pronounced “vana”). This tour is two and a half hours long.

What better way to start your day than to slip into the refreshing waters of Turtle Canyon and swim with amazing green sea turtles, beautiful tropical fish, and other incredible marine life? Our snorkel guides help you feel confident, safe, and at ease as you dive in and explore the beauty just below the surface. Our guides specialize in showing you not only the honu (turtles), but also hidden creatures such as a tako (octopus), vana (sea urchin), and so much more! We provide snorkels, masks, fins, and snorkel vests to get you out there exploring all the remarkable sea life below!

After we’ve finished snorkeling, we’ll hoist the sails and set out around Diamond Head on the search for Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, and in the winter months, we’ll be on the lookout for Humpback Whales making their yearly migration. Stretch out on the nets, relax, and enjoy complimentary snacks and soft drinks as we cruise along some of the most beautiful scenery on the island!

The Holokai departs from the beach for all of our sails, so be sure to bring footwear that you can easily slip on and off! The specific beach for arrival and departure changes depending on the tides to ensure a safe boarding, so keep in mind that the departure spot may change and might not always be right outside the hotel. The walk down to the beach may take from 5 to 10 minutes, a maximum of 0.3 miles down to the boat.

Any guests with mobility issues or are a slower walker will have to let us know after or before you book, so we can make the appropriate accommodations.

Great time snorkeling with this crew! We saw a lot of fish and many sea turtles. My daughter loved jumping off the side of the boat over and over! Drinks were great too!

My husband and I had a wonderful time on the 2:30 Sunset Cruise. The guys sailing us out were super nice. It was beautiful on the water, and we even saw a turtle in the water! The Mai Tai drinks they had on board, were actually the best we had the entire trip. I would defiantly recommend this experience! P.S. you could get soaked...we did :-)

So much fun! One of the more affordable sunset cruises and 100% worth it. The workers on the boat were friendly and upbeat and did a great job of cultivating a fun vibe. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

This was a great experience. We went on the morning snorkel tour and had a fantastic time! The boat comes right to the beach at Waikiki. The people were fantastic!!! We saw 3 turtles and lots of fish at turtle canyon.

We did the Diamond Head Tour and had a great time. This is a 90 min tour with sails up. Captain and crew were great. Great views of Waikiki and Diamond Head from the boat. The Manu Kai is small enough that you really felt the waves and were really sailing. Crew were manning the sails but still had time to make sure you had mai tais. Overall a great time and highly recommend.

Well worth the money. Great crew, drinks included. Plenty of room on the boat. Friendly atmosphere. Bring a camera or iPhone, maybe a sweatshirt for after sunset. Expect to have a great time for $40.00. Definitely would go again.

We chose Manu Kai for the mid morning turtle snorkel at Turtle Canyon and had a terrific time. We saw plenty of turtles and fish and enjoyed the professional but casual, laid back vibe of the crew. Jess in particular was outstanding (with a background in marine biology). Post our snorkel we headed towards Diamond Head for a great view of the beach and were lucky enough to see dolphins at play. A great morning trip.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Guests receive a full refund with a 24-hour notice of cancellation. Full refunds are also issued in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

During the slower seasons and typically for the morning sails, tour cancellations can occur due to not meeting a minimum requirement of 6 booked guests. In these rare situations, guests are always given the option to rebook or refund. If you are concerned about your tour, please call with any questions.

Guests wishing to rebook or reschedule must give 24 hours’ notice. Contact us by phone directly to cancel or inquire about a cancellation. No-shows and guests cancelling within 24 hours of departure will be charged full price.

CHECK-IN POLICY

Check-in time for all tours is strictly 30 minutes prior to departure, with no exceptions. Failure to check in on time will result in loss of reservation.

We require payment for all reservations. Otherwise all trips are first come, first served. We accept cash or credit card as payment methods.

When you visit Hawaii, one of the most popular things to do is to hit the water and head out snorkeling. While Oahu has some great snorkeling spots, not many are close to Waikiki. If you’re looking for a snorkeling experience that is close to Waikiki and memorable, you’ll probably enjoy a trip to Turtle Canyon!

I’ll be honest and say that I was really hesitant about heading to Turtle Canyon. I’d heard it was crowded and there wasn’t much to see. While it’s true this is a crowded spot, we were really happy with our tour! We saw plenty of turtles (which our kids were thrilled by) and it was an easy trip to Make from Waikiki.

Most Turtle Canyon snorkeling tours depart from Kewalo Basin Harbor which is just outside of Waikiki and make the short boat ride out to Turtle Canyon. This site is popular and crowded, but it does provide a great snorkeling experience as well as an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle .

Turtle Canyon Snorkeling FAQs

How do you snorkel at turtle canyon.

Snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is by boat only, so the best way to snorkel is from a boat tour. There are a number of tours that leave from Kewalo Harbor, which is a short drive from Waikiki. There are a number of different snorkeling tours to choose from, including catamaran tours, raft tours, and kayaking tours. We give our recommendations below!

What is Turtle Canyon?

Just off the coast of Waikiki is an area that is known for its turtle population that has been nicknamed Turtle Canyon. 

The reef at Turtle Canyon is a natural turtle cleaning station, where sea turtles go to have fish come through and clean their shells. Fish will remove algae, barnacles, and even parasites, so this is important for the turtle’s health. Plus it’s also pretty cool to see. It’s no wonder it’s such a popular snorkeling spot.

Hawaii Green Sea Turtles are protected and it’s recommended that you stay at least 10 feet away from them both in water and on land . 

Is Turtle Canyon snorkeling worth it?

If your goal is to see turtles in the water, snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is worth it. This is a great opportunity to see sea turtles and enjoy a boat ride. But a word of caution: this is a crowded spot. It’s the closest snorkeling tour stop near Waikiki and a lot of tours head out there daily. So it’s not a peaceful, serene experience, but it’s still fun. 

We saw a lot of turtles — so many that we lost count. And our five year old son was thrilled recounting the stories of just how many turtles were swimming around.

Turtle Canyon Tour Tips

While snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is a pretty fun and easy experience, we have a few tips that will make your trip even better. 

1. Get there early for parking

Kewalo Basin parking can be challenging, especially if there is an event going on. We learned our lesson the first time heading to a boat tour when we didn’t leave ourselves enough time to park and there was a surf competition underway at the beach (so parking was very difficult to come by). Leave yourself an extra 15 minutes more than you think you need to park and walk to the slip. And even easier, take an uber or a taxi to skip any parking stresses!

If you’re driving, make sure to check prices with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . We use them almost every time we rent a car and we’ve saved thousands of dollars with them. They offer great rates from the national carriers and there’s no pre-payment required. It’s honestly amazing.

2. Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Mineral-based reef safe sunscreen is the best choice for protecting Hawaii’s delicate reef system. Even better, grab some sun protective clothing and you’ll use less sunscreen and protect your skin more. 

3. Choose the right tour operator

There are a lot of great tours to Turtle Canyon and it might feel difficult to choose. While the ones listed below are great, read through our notes to find the right tour for you. Differences like group size and boat type can make a big difference on your trip. 

4. Go early!

The morning tours generally have the best visibility because the trade winds usually pick up later in the day. However, the sea turtles visit the reef often and are there all day long so not to worry if you book a later time you will still be able to see lots of tropical fish, sea turtles, and possibly even dolphins on the way out to sea.

Best Turtle Canyon Snorkeling Tours

Small group tour.

Hop aboard a power raft for a 1.5 hour tour to Turtle Canyon. With only 6 passengers, this is a great small group tour. The raft offers a powerful and agile ride, but it’s only appropriate for kids 5 and up. 

They offer guaranteed turtle sightings and if you don’t see one, you get to go again for free. You’ll spend 45 minutes in the water and then return enjoying juice and water and sights of the Waikiki shoreline. 

Power Boat 20 Person Tour

Take a two-hour trip with Charter Oahu on their 38’ power boat. The boat is partially shaded and comfortable! The boat has room for 27 passengers but they cap the tour at 20 passengers so it doesn’t feel too crowded. 

And while Turtle Canyon is a crowded snorkeling spot, you’ll get a slightly quieter experience with Charter Oahu. They have a mooring location that is a bit on the outside of the canyon (a place they refer to as Turtle Rock) so you stay out of the crowds. 

This is a small, family-run business, all-female crew, and aside from offering a great tour, they keep their tour prices very reasonable. Our family has a great time on their Turtle Canyon snorkel tour. We paid for the extra photo package which was available on board and we were thrilled that they captured our family memories so well.

Well Priced 40 Passenger Tour

Living Ocean Tours, a family-run small business operates a larger tour (up to 40 passengers) to Turtle Canyon. This two-hour tour departs four times per day and welcomes passengers 3 and up. 

The 50-foot passenger boat has both shaded and full sun areas as well as a bathroom on board. 

After snorkeling, you’ll head back to Waikiki and enjoy refreshments and light snacks while taking in the scenery. 

Catamaran Tour

Hop aboard a 55’ catamaran with Moana Sailing for a trip out to Turtle Canyon. This two hour tour runs three times per day and can carry up to 48 passengers. 

Enjoying this trip on a catamaran does mean your tour group is larger, but the boat ride is more comfortable and luxurious. Stretch out on the nets in front as you take a break from snorkeling and enjoy the views!

Kayak and Snorkel Tour

Ditch the boat and have a different experience. Head out on a kayaking trip to Turtle Canyon . 

Your kayaking trip leaves from the Hilton Hawaiian Village. After a 15 minute (or so) kayak ride, you’ll get to hop in and do some snorkeling at Turtle Canyon. Paddle back to shore once the snorkeling is done, and it’s time for your surf lesson to start! This is a day full of activity. 

Their usual group size is 6 people on three double kayaks.

This is a tour on our 32ft Adventure boat. The Captain and Professional Snorkel guide will take you to Turtle Canyon which is one of the best snorkel spots on the island to swim with sea turtles. The snorkel guide will be in the water with you the entire time and has a vast knowledge of the ocean and sea life. We provide snorkel gear, fins, and safety vests (bringing your own gear is ok too). Sea Sickness – If you are prone to sea sickness or are not accustomed to being on a boat we suggest over-the-counter sea sickness medication prior to the tour. (Please consult your doctor if you have health issues before taking medication)

Departure Time / Late Arrivals – Out of respect to our guests we attempt to leave on time for every trip. If you are running late and do not arrive at the boat prior to the start of the passenger safety briefing your ticket will be forfeited. Refunds cannot be processed for no-shows / late arrivals so please plan ahead and arrive on time.

Parking – Parking is available at Kewalo Basin Boat Harbor for $1 per hour. Please refer to the Kewalo Basin Boat Harbor Map for parking areas.

Cancellation Policy- We go out rain or shine but In the event of severe weather or ocean conditions we will cancel the tour. We will notify you via text message as soon as the cancellation is made. You will have the option of a reschedule or a full refund.

Note: Hawaiian Sea Turtles are an endangered species, so it is important to keep a distance from them.

• We require 48 hours for a full refund
• 48-24 hours notice is a 50% refund.
• No refunds given within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time (no exceptions)
• Re-Bookings made more than 48 hours in advance are free
• 48-24 hours notice rebooking require a 10% fee.
• No Rebooking offered within 24 hours of the scheduled departure.

Cancellation

• If we cancel due to inclement weather or unsafe conditions as decided by the Captain the day of the tour – a free rebooking or full refund will be offered.
• Our tours require a minimum amount of passengers. If the minimum is not met you’ll be offered different time/date or a full refund.

Tons of turtles & lots of fun.

I took my niece on this snorkel sail, and we both had a fantastic time. The captain and crew are so friendly, and we great about making sure we were both safe and comfortable in the water. Not only were there lots of fis ... h at the snorkel spot, but we saw a bunch of turtles as well. The crew is also really good about making sure we didn't get too close to them, but also pointed out the turtles when they would come to the surface. The snacks they provided were greatly appreciated after over an hour of swimming and snorkeling, and I loved that they turned off the motor on the way back to the harbor so we could actually sail with just the sound of the ocean and wind. 10/10 would recommend!

The worst snorkel tour I’ve ever been on as far as what a person was able to see under the water. My husband didn’t see a single fish. The kids and I saw two species. A black fish and a striped fish..literally two fish ... of each kind. Water is too cloudy to see much. I don’t believe there is really much to see even if the water were clear. No reef in sight. Way too many tourists from about 5 different boats all dropped off to snorkel at the same spot so people are constantly getting in each other’s way. I never saw a turtle except the one from the boat when we first pulled up. BEST part was the crew and the sail after the snorkel. The crew was wonderful. Brandon was super funny. Ryan and Mike both nice guys. They all work hard. Maybe it was just a poor day at sea for seeing much in the water, but I wouldn’t do it again. A sunset sail with them would be great since the sailing was the best part and the crew is awesome. But if you’re hoping to see a lot of fish and turtles while snorkeling, don’t expect it here. Wish I could get a refund.

Great time snorkeling with Alexio, Jonah, Noah and Brandon. Don’t let their youthful look fool you. These guys are courteous, knowledgeable and very friendly. My youngest had so much fun she didn’t even realize it was ti ... me to go back to the ship! Would do this again in a heartbeat! ♥️

Buy or bring your snorkel and mask, or sanitized re-usable sets are available as a backup. There is plenty of covered space to place bags, belongings, towels and clothing that will stay dry.

What should I wear?

Come in swimsuits or casual clothing that may come in contact with water. Easy-to-remove shoes or flip flops are recommended. There are shaded, covered and dry areas of this boat, and also optional areas such as the front nets where you can enjoy sea spray and more wind.

What will I see on the Turtle Canyon Catamaran Snorkel Cruise?

During this experience you will see views of Waikiki and the Ko'olau Mountains, including Diamond Head. You will also see fish, reefs, even green sea turtles at play off the Waikiki coast. During whale season (December through April), Hawaii Nautical also stops to watch those majestic mammals.

If by chance you don’t see turtles, you will be invited to come back and redo the tour free of charge.

This tour requires booking confirmation and is subject to favorable weather conditions. The minimum age for alcohol consumption is 21 years. While green sea turtles are generally spotted, in the rare event that you don’t see any, you can book another tour free of charge (re-rides only; no refunds). Please note that the tour is not wheelchair-accessible, but service animals are welcome. The tour isn’t recommended for those with heart problems or other serious medical conditions. This tour/activity can accommodate a maximum of 80 travelers.
