San Francisco New Year's Eve Cruises are my favorite way to celebrate the new year. The best part is that there are several types so you can find the one that fits you best.

On this night, you will find party cruises for those 21+ and higher-end dinner and dancing cruises. All offer some food, drinks, and of course, an amazing view of the fireworks show at midnight.

Many of these cruises return to port shortly after the fireworks display. 

Be prepared to fight through the crowds as the thousands of people watching from the shore will also be heading home. 

Also, many of them sell out early, so grab your tickets as soon as you know this is what you want to do for New Year's in San Francisco!

San Francisco New Years Eve Cruises 2023 to 2024

Red & white cruises.

• Leaves at 10 pm from Pier 43 1/2 in Fisherman's Wharf

SF NYE Fireworks Display

The biggest event on NYE 2024 is the fireworks display along the SF Bay. This year's display starts at 11:59 pm and lasts for about half an hour. You will find it (and thousands of other fireworks lovers) just to the south of the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero.

• MBroadwarrior 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Just ok. Don't spend a lot on a cruise. There are several harbor cruises available as an alternative to the NYE crowds in Time Square. The Lexington Yacht is one of the pricier options. However, I don't recommend it because you don't get anything more for paying extra. The food and beverages are limited. The bar and dance floor are on the upper deck but the seating is on the lower deck. There are 4 staff to service 72 guests so service is extremely slow. It's not even a luxury yacht. Trust me. The Lexington is a rip-off. Go with a less expensive option like Bateaux. Also, none of the cruises are permitted to sail close to the Statue of Liberty anymore. You won't be right under it like it's pictured. In fact, all the ships are positioned at a significant distance. Read more Written January 1, 2024

Do Not Miss the Boat: Gates close at 9:55pm. Cruise leaves sharply at 10:00pm. Absolutely NO Refunds or exchanges. We reserved a spot for you on our cruise.

Dress Code: Dress to impress. Upscale cocktail / semi-formal attire required.

Bag Requirements: The only permitted bags that are allowed onboard the vessel must meet the following requirements: All bags must be completely clear and no larger than 6 inches long and 5 inches tall. Any other bags or purses will not be allowed onboard.

Parking: Please allow plenty of time to find parking. Attendant parking lot is available at Pier 3, on the Embarcadero. Additional parking lots available: On Davis St. between Broadway St & Vallejo St, On the corner of The Embarcadero and Broadway St, and On The Embarcadero and Washington St. (Directly across from Pier 3). Yacht Company holds a zero tolerance policy related to illegal substances aboard all vessels. Anyone caught participating or processing any such items will not be allowed to board and substances will be confiscated.

If you are thought to be under the influence of, or caught participating in, illegal substances on board, you'll be quarantined until boat can safely return to dock and the cruise is subject to end for all guests immediately upon doing so; no refunds will be issued under any circumstances.

PURCHASE POLICY

NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES. ALL SALES FINAL: There are NO REFUNDS, NO CANCELLATIONS, no credits, no exchanges, and no transfers after the order has been made.

Credit Card & ID:

You must present the original credit card used to purchase the ticket and a valid Government Issued Photo Identification (along with your e-tickets that have been emailed to you via Eventbrite when your order was placed): the name on both the credit card and ID match the name on your purchased tickets, in order to gain entry to the event. If the name on the Credit Card and/or ID does not match the tickets, or if you do not have both the credit card used to make the purchase and government issued identification, you will be denied entry to event without a refund.

Covid Policy:

No credit or refund will be issued as a result of the ticket purchaser or any person in the party contracting COVID-19 or a variant alike. By purchasing tickets to a VIP Nightlife Event, you understand and agree that tickets are non-refundable and you are assuming the risk that you may not be able to use tickets purchased if you contract COVID-19 or variants alike. You further agree that you will not attend any VIP Nightlife event if you currently have symptoms of COVID-19, have been exposed to COVID-19 prior to attending and/or have tested positive for COVID-19 and have not completed the CDC recommended quarantine period. Be advised attendees may be required to show proof of vaccine and/or a negative test result. As the rules for events vary by location and change often, please check your local listing and respective government authorities for any applicable rules that may apply to you. You will not receive a refund if you are unable to attend an event due to any non-compliance with local rules, event guidelines, vaccine status, or failure to provide a negative test result. However, VIP Nightlife may allow you to transfer your tickets for any reason to another person by having the ticket purchaser email customer service within 24 hours of the event [email protected] with a copy of the original ticket purchaser's photo ID and credit card used to purchase the tickets along with the email address and name of the customer to whom the tickets will be transferred. Please be advised that VIP Nightlife may not be able to honor all requests for transfers if they are made outside of business hours or too close to the time of the actual event.

If you encounter a problem at the event, you must file a complaint with Promoter within 5 calendar days following the date of the event; failure to contact Promoter within the 5-day period will be a complete waiver of your right to request compensation whether monetary or otherwise. Purchase Policy:

By placing an order, you are confirming that you received this policy and are agreeing to abide by the clauses within. This Purchase Policy is a binding contract between you and event Promoter.

Event Booking:

By purchasing a ticket, package or reservation you're entitled to entry to event you're purchasing it for. At the time of your order, Eventbrite will place an order for your ticket(s) in the Promoter’s ticketing system, reducing the number of tickets available for the chosen event. Before purchasing your ticket(s) we urge you to confirm the title, time and location of the event(s) you wish to attend, as there are no refunds. Each event has a definitive date, start time and end time. If you do not show up to the event, you understand that you are forfeiting your ticket(s) and therefore your ticketing fee (the entirety of what you paid) will not be returned to you. If you do not attend your event, you're still 100% financially liable for your purchase. If you cannot attend event, you will not receive refund.

Event Cancellations:

If the event is canceled you will receive a refund for the face value of the ticket.

No Refunds:

Unforeseen circumstances beyond promoter’s control will not be grounds for a refund, including but not limited to the following: local or national weather conditions, natural disasters, waiting in lines, extended waits in lines, family emergencies, medical emergencies, employment issues including layoffs, traffic, parking, public or private transportation issues, etc. If you purchased for the incorrect date, location, event, etc, promoter is not obligated to provide a refund, credit, exchange or transfer. If cancellation or transfer request is approved, promoter reserves the right to charge a $10 administrative fee for its time, in addition to charging a $10 restocking fee per ticket if tickets are placed back on sale. Promoters, Venue Owners, Venue Management, Security, Event Staff, and other agents of the event, have the right to refuse entry to any ticket-holder, without a refund, for any reason at their discretion , including but not limited to: disorderly behavior, failing to comply with the rules of the venue, incorrect attire, intoxication, venue capacity, breach of security, and other restrictions. Ticket-holder is aware that the Venue and Talent are subject to change without notice, which are not grounds for a refund. Ticket-holder is aware that amenities promised by Promoter are not guaranteed, and are not grounds for a refund, including but not limited to: VIP amenities, drink specials, drink tickets, gifts, express entry, special areas, celebrity guests, etc. Dissatisfaction with any aspect of the event is not grounds for a refund, including but not limited to: music, DJ(s), decorations or lack thereof, party favors or lack thereof, beverages or lack thereof, alcohol selection, bar staff, food availability and selection, fellow patrons/attendees, venue staff, event staff, security, performances, ambiance, amenities, venue, check-in process, seating or lack of seating, wait in lines, emergency closures of event, emergency return of boats or yachts, delayed commencing of events, early ending of events, public amenities such as fireworks or public performances or the lack thereof, line of sight of public amenities such as fireworks or public performances being blocked by trees, buildings, boats, people, and/or other things, etc.

Release of Liability:

By purchasing the tickets through Eventbrite, you hereby release and forever discharge Promoter from any liability or claims for damages that may arise as a result of your attendance at, and voluntary participation in, the event(s), including claims for personal injury, or damage to personal property, or any other claims for negligence on the part of the event’s Promoter. By purchasing the tickets through Eventbrite for this event, you hereby release and forever discharge event Promoter, and their officers and agents, from any liability or claims for damages that may arise as a result of your attendance and participation at the event(s). It is hereby understood that the purchase of tickets by you and your participation in the events shall not be construed as an assumption on the part of Promoter of responsibility, liability, or control of the events.

By Purchasing tickets for this event, ticket purchaser agrees to indemnify and hold harmless event Promoter, said entities officers, owners, employees, and agents, from and against all claims, damages, losses and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees arising out of or by reason of complying with this Indemnity Clause. Ticket purchaser, their heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns, hereby release, remise, and forever discharge event Promoter and its entities owners, officers, employees and agents, from all manner of actions, causes of actions, suits, debts, judgments, executions, claims, demands whatsoever, known or unknown, in law or equity, which ticket-holder has ever had, now have, may have, or claim against event Promoter.

Collections & Legal Action Against Debt:

Once you make a purchase, if those funds are removed from the Promoter's account and given back to you, you owe the Promoter that money back, plus applicable fees as outlined below. If you owe money to Promoter, Promoter reserves the right to take legal action against you and/or send you to collections for the recovery of said debt. If you are sent to collection or there is legal action taken against you, you are fiscally responsible for any and all legal costs and fees, directly associated and/or indirectly associated, with recovering the debt owed by you. Promoter's collection’s agencies reserve the right to negatively affect your personal credit score until your debt is paid. Once an account has been placed in collections, the only way to get yourself out of Collections is to pay the debt owed by you to the collections agency.

Arbitration Agreement:

In the event there are any legal disputes against Promoter, by agreeing to this Purchase Policy, you agree that such disputes will be arbitrated. You further agree that the location of arbitration will be set in Los Angeles County, California.

Severability:

If any clause, aspect, part or provisions of this Purchase Policy is found to be null, void, illegal or otherwise unenforceable, the rest of this Purchase Policy remains in full binding effect, and the unenforceable provision(s) shall be deemed modified to the limited extent required to permit the enforcement of said clause that required modification and of the agreement as a whole.

San Francisco's population showing slight rebound from 2022

San Francisco lost nearly 62,000 residents from 2020 to 2023 — a 7% drop in population, but the city's population has begun growing again, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Why it matters: A growing population boosts commercial activity, new businesses and tax revenue — all of which stimulate growth in the local economy, Ted Egan, the city's chief economist, told Axios via email.

• The city's rising population "is yet more evidence that the city is not in a downward spiral or doom loop" and is "on track," he said.

The big picture: San Francisco was hit hard by the work-from-home policies that enabled people to move to places with lower housing costs.

• That ultimately resulted in a struggling downtown, with some offices and retailers closing their doors.
• Meanwhile, the city continues to grapple with its homelessness crisis , drug overdose epidemic and public safety concerns among residents.

By the numbers: San Francisco's population declined from roughly 871,000 in 2020 to 808,000 in 2022, per the Census data.

• Last year, the city's population began climbing again, reaching nearly 809,000.

Yes, but: San Francisco's population is still below its 2019 peak of nearly 882,000 .

• Meanwhile, the Bay Area ranked second to last for population growth from 2020 to 2023.

Driving the news: Data was released this month for the Census Bureau's annual Population Estimates Program, which calculates the population between censuses.

Between the lines: The city's housing affordability crisis and what to do about it are major points of contention among elected officials and residents.

• Just this week, city supervisors overturned Mayor London Breed's veto of legislation that will impose housing development restrictions on some historic areas in San Francisco, the SF Chronicle reports .

What they're saying: "Our lack of housing is at the root of so many challenges in San Francisco and California," like poverty, homelessness, economic revitalization and climate change, Breed told the Chronicle.

• Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who authored the legislation, told the San Francisco Standard that "housing will get built, developers will still make sizable profits, but the reality is that they won't be able to destroy the very things that make San Francisco so special."

What we're watching: San Francisco voters this month passed Proposition A , a $300 million affordable housing bond.

Fed’s jerome powell keeps interest rate-cut outlook despite stalling inflation data: ‘what we were expecting’.

The latest US inflation data is “along the lines of what we would like to see,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Friday in comments that appeared to keep the central bank’s baseline for interest rate cuts this year intact .

The personal consumption expenditures price index data released on Friday “is what we were expecting,” Powell said, and even though the numbers showed less of a slowdown than last year “you won’t see us overreacting.”

The data last month were “not as low as most of the good readings we got in the second half of last year, but it’s definitely more along the lines of what we want to see,” Powell said during an appearance at the San Francisco Fed where he was interviewed by Kai Ryssdal of public radio’s “Marketplace” program.

Powell’s comments were in line with his remarks after the Fed’s policy meeting last week, in which he said higher-than-expected inflation in January and February had not changed the sense that price rises would keep falling this year to the central bank’s 2% target.

Government data showed the PCE price index increased at a 2.5% annual rate in February, up from 2.4% in the prior month. The number excluding volatile food and energy prices rose 0.3% on a month-to-month basis, slightly faster than Powell anticipated when he said last week that February core inflation would be “well below” 0.3%.

Still, Powell indicated the February report did not undermine the Fed’s baseline outlook.

Some details of the PCE data, economists noted, did show improvement in aspects of inflation that the Fed considers important, even as the headline numbers have shown little progress in the first two months of the year.

The Fed last week held its benchmark overnight interest rate steady in the 5.25%-5.50% range  and also reaffirmed – narrowly – a baseline projection that the rate will fall by 0.75 percentage points by the end of this year.

Powell in recent weeks  has had to reconcile expectations  for rate cuts to begin this year with data showing improvement in the inflation number had slowed to start the year.

“We need to see more” progress on inflation before cutting rates, he said on Friday. “The decision to begin to reduce rates is a very, very important one … The economy is strong right now, and the labor market is strong right now. And inflation has been coming down. We can and we will be careful about this decision because we can be.”

A dozen long-stranding San Francisco businesses have been recognized for their contributions to the city’s diverse tapestry. In a press release on Tuesday, March 26, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development announced the addition of 12 new businesses to San Francisco’s Legacy Business Registry since the beginning of 2024. The roster includes five restaurants: Chinatown’s R&G Lounge , known for its salt and pepper crab; On The Bridge restaurant in Japantown; North Beach focaccia-specialist Liguria Bakery ; Greens Restaurant , the legendary vegetarian restaurant located at Fort Mason; and Ristorante Ideale , the Italian restaurant praised in 2015 by then- Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer for being “a blast from the past.”

The last also earns the distinction of being the 400th business to be added to the registry. Once designated as Legacy Businesses — which requires a business has been in operation for at least 30 years and “contribute to the neighborhood’s history and/or the identity of a particular neighborhood or community” — owners gain access to support such as rent stabilization grants for both businesses and landlords who sign long-term leases.

Kajiken , which opened in San Mateo and was added to the California Michelin Guide in 2023, will open its newest location at the Ridge plaza in Elk Grove, at 7470 Elk Grove Boulevard, Suite 120. The business specializes in abura soba, sometimes referred to as soup-less or dry ramen.

Wine collectors fight to get bottles back

It’s been about a year since San Francisco tech company Underground Cellar shuttered abruptly leaving users confused about how and where they could retrieve bottles the company had allegedly been storing for them. Now, the North Bay Business Journal reports a group of former customers has been in a legal battle to get back their wine. The final phase of the process is happening now, which means nearly 90,000 remaining bottles of wine can be purchased online .

Downtown Los Gatos restaurant closes

The Mercury News reports that Sidecar Modern Tavern, which opened in downtown Los Gatos in 2019, has closed. “We were in business five years, and the scars of COVID remained,” co-owner Adam Chick told the paper. “We hoped our debt would be forgiven by the landlord.” The restaurant’s last day in business was Sunday, March 17.

Miami investor walks away from three properties after defaulting on loans for $365M

Five years ago, Starwood Capital Group paid nearly $500 million for three office buildings in Downtown Oakland. Now it has lost them to its lender after defaulting on a $364.5 million loan.

The Miami Beach-based investor led by billionaire Barry Sternlicht has surrendered the three office towers at 1901 Harrison, 2100 Franklin and 2101 Webster streets, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Starwood had bought the trio of office buildings in 2019 in two deals for a combined $494.3 million, according to the San Jose Mercury News . The seller was CIM Group, based in Los Angeles.

One deal included the 20-story, 475,000-square-foot building at 2101 Webster Street and the nine-story, 215,000-square-foot building at 2100 Franklin Street, which make up the Oakland Center 21 office complex, for $347.1 million.

The other deal included the 17-story, 272,000-square-foot tower at 1900 Harrison Street for $147.2 million.

At the same time, Starwood also picked up a parking garage at 2353 Webster Street in Downtown Oakland for $17.7 million. It’s not clear if that property was among those surrendered.

The asset manager funded the three office towers and the parking garage with $364.5 million in financing from Deutsche Bank, which has assumed control of the office properties, according to the Chronicle. The towers are expected to be sold for prices well below their 2019 values. 

The foreclosures are the latest trouble for Downtown Oakland, once a destination for companies and residents priced out of high-cost markets like San Francisco. That gap is closing because of plummeting office values in San Francisco. 

Vacancy in Oakland’s nearly 12 million square feet of offices was at a record high of 30.2 percent late last year, up from 8.8 percent in 2019, according to CBRE. Some 36 percent of offices in Oakland’s central business district , which includes Uptown, Downtown and Lake Merritt, are empty. 

A lack of foot traffic during weekday business hours has impacted Downtown shops and restaurants, while the city faces pressure to respond to surges in violent crime, property crimes and burglaries over the past two years.

Last year, reports of violent crimes citywide rose 21 percent from 2022, though they’ve not hit the heights of past decades.

Oakland is now in danger of losing office tenants to other East Bay markets, including Emeryville and Walnut Creek, experts tracking the Oakland office market say, citing affordability and Downtown conditions.

Lenders and institutional investors once eager to fuel Oakland’s economic development have retrenched.

For Deutsche Bank, “it’s wait and see,” an unidentified person with direct knowledge of the bank’s investment strategy for the next two years told the Chronicle.

“Office is a distressed asset. They’re taking a cautious view — more conservative than average,” the person said, adding that Deutsche Bank is “very cautious” about taking on new clients and “devoting resources” to both the San Francisco and the Oakland markets.

With a new plan to guide Downtown’s future released last week, Oakland officials hope to decouple the city’s economy from San Francisco’s, through zoning changes and incentives to encourage development while safeguarding Oakland’s arts, cultural assets and affordability.

Short-term interventions to address crime and activate Downtown include new safety cameras, reduced parking meter fees after 5 p.m. and extended hours for parking garages.

A Downtown Oakland Specific Plan, released March 22, calls for the construction of 29,100 new homes, with up to 7,275 of them affordable, by 2040.

The plan aims to generate funds for public services and to subsidize affordable housing through development impact fees and taxes. It also proposes greater land use flexibility to support diverse businesses Downtown, and encourages research and development and biotechnology.

This month, Starwood’s Sternlicht also faced sinking prospects for his home in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Storms have washed away beaches, leaving him no other option than to tear it down.
