Split, Croatia is many sailors' dream destination. Set on the Adriatic Sea, this coastal town offers everything a European sailor may want. The spring and summer months have favorable temperatures and strong winds for sailing. Plus, the small towns around Split offer a variety of cultural experiences to enjoy during the day. Tourist sites such as Diocletian’s Palace and Peristil Square make for a memorable visit to archaic Croatia .

Split is the next frontier for sailors who have already experienced everything the Mediterranean has to offer, or who want to go off the beaten path. Croatian sailing is less about coastal relaxation and more about historic majesty and cultural immersion. 12 Knots can provide an exceptional sailing experience for you and your group.

Split is an ideal place to begin a sailing charter for all group sizes and needs. Whether you’re an experienced skipper or a beginner taking on their first major sailing trip, we can provide the creature comforts and information needed to make your trip memorable. Below is some of the most important information about Split bareboat rentals for you to start planning and booking your trip.

Sailing Conditions in Split

Split offers exceptional sailing conditions throughout the year. Temperatures range from 22-28 C in the spring, and 26-30 C in the summer. Wind speeds typically reach 10 to 20 knots with calm seas in the warmer months. The early autumn can also be an enjoyable time to sail; however, temperatures begin to drop in October, causing an increase in rainfall.

Three dominant winds determine sailing conditions in Split:

  • The Bora: This north-easterly wind brings cool weather to the Adriatic Sea and coastline
  • The Sirocco: This warm and humid wind reaches the entire Adriatic coastline at a typical speed of 16-20 knots.
  • The Maestral: This wind is strongest in the mornings with average speeds of 16-20 knots.

Best Time to Vacation in Split

Sailing in Split is best in the late spring, summer, and early fall. During these times you can expect calm seas and a warm, dry climate. Average temperatures in Croatia are favorable most of the year except for the winter months. This brings many other sailing tourists to the area, with whom you may have to compete for moorings.

The summer is the busiest time, so if you’re planning a summer sailing trip expect crowds in the cities. However, traveling to Croatia in the summer affords some of the most beautiful blue skies, warm waters, and very little rain. Regardless of the time you plan your trip, be vigilant of local weather patterns to best plan sailing times and duration.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Croatia has over 1200 islands and cities from which to start sailing, but Split is the perfect place to do so. This area is equipped for beginner sailors with plenty of mooring buoys and marinas and can offer easier conditions to sail than parts of the Mediterranean.

For beginners, sailing from May to September will offer the best conditions. Regardless of your experience level, you will want to be cautious at popular marinas due to the influx of sailors during “Yacht Week” and the official sailing season.

If you are planning to book a bareboat charter in Split, Croatia, you will need to provide a certificate of competence. These are required for all sailing vessels in the region. If you do not have such a certificate, a crewed charter will be provided, as all 12 Knots crews are certified.

Split Luxury Yacht Charter: Explore the Heart of the Adriatic

sailing yacht charter split

With Split Luxury Yacht Charter Guide we are taking you to the serene islands of the Split Archipelago, like Biševo with its famous Blue Cave, southern shores of Vis, Pakleni islands and Hvar

Split, as well as the entire Adriatic coast, is blessed by the mild Mediterranean climate, which means a lot of sun and heat, especially in the summer months, and very few cold and rainy days. Although there is a whole range of things you can do in Split throughout the year, such as the obligatory walk through the UNESCO-protected Diocletian’s Palace, if you love hubbub, parties and concerts, this enchanting city should definitely visit in the heart of the season.

In July and August, all of Split seems to be dressed summer dresses, just in time for the world-famous Ultra Europe festival (July 8-10, 2022). On the other hand, those who are into more romantic experiences will surely be delighted by the spring face of Split and the surrounding islands, which seem to wake up around Easter, as do most travel agencies, cafes and restaurants , opening their doors and welcoming first visitors.

However, it should be emphasized that for many September, and more often October, are the most desirable part of the year to visit Croatia and Split, as in pre- and post-season there are no crowds, prices are lower, and weather and sea temperatures are still pleasant for all sea-related activities.

Throughout this summer half of the year, an extremely large number of visitors decide to charter a yacht in Split because the Split area is one of the top charter destinations in Croatia .

Marinas and berths in Split archipelago

Split yacht charter is extremely popular because of the many magical surrounding destinations, but also because some of the most beautiful Croatian marinas are located in this part of the Adriatic.

ACI marina Split

split luxury yacht charter guide aci marina

The city of Split is dotted with many small, local marinas, but with 320 berths by far the most visited is ACI Marina Split (+385 (0) 98 398 850) which offers much-needed parking sports for yacht owners. In case you are looking for parking in and around ACI Marina Split, first look inside the marina.

One very attractive anchoring spot near Split is the Blue Lagoon, which is located between Veliki and Mali Krknjaš, and the much larger Veli Drvenik.

Marina Martinis Marchi

Maslinica island of Solta Split luxury yachts charter guide

ACI marina Milna

On the island of Brač , the largest nautical center is the deep Milna cove with three marinas: ACI marina Milna (+385 (0) 98 398 851) with 170 berths, Yacht club Milna (+385 (0) 91 400 04 87) with 45 berths and Marina Vlaška (+385 (0) 99 244 7410) with 70 berths. Apart from Milna, the nearby Brač Yachting Anchorage Bobovišća (+385 (0) 91 500 1619) is also becoming increasingly popular, where you can book your place on the buoy in advance.

ACI marina Palmižana

aci marina palmizana hvar charter

Pakleni islands off the coast of Hvar seem to have been created for anchoring, as was the nearby ACI Marina Palmižana (+385 (0) 21 744 995) with 180 berths. The nearby Vinogradišće cove offers the possibility of buoy berths (concessionaire Đenko Meneghello +385 (0) 91 171 82 42), and in addition to providing protection from almost all winds except the south, is locally famous for a spectacular number of excellent restaurants to visit by boat .

Anchorages on Vis island

If you are aiming towards Vis, make sure to stop at Budikovac, beloved for its turquoise lagoon whose depth rarely exceeds 2 meters. One of everyone’s favorite coves on the island is Stončica, where buoys have been set up to welcome yachts, and the same concessionaire (Gradina Vis +385 (0) 21 711 121) offers buoys in the town of Vis, where boaters have 100 berths at their disposal.

Budikovac island Vis Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

In Komiža, 30 boats can be moored on the waterfront (SDZ Port Authority +385 (0) 21 339 825), and 60 buoys have been set up in Komiža Bay (Komiža Nautical Center +385 (0) 21 713 215). Contact the Komiža Nautical Center if you decide to visit the Mezoporat cove on the island of Biševo, where 20 buoys have also been set up.

Yachting routes that pass through the Split waters are by far the most popular on the Adriatic due to the magnetic attraction of this part of the Croatian Adriatic and the fabulous pearl-like islands that surround this city – Hvar , Pakleni islands, southern coast of Vis, Blue Cave on the island of Biševo. Gather your crew, opt for Split luxury yacht charter and direct your bow to the south.

Puteus Palace Hotel Brac island croatia

Island of Brač

Along the way, many boaters want to swerve a little toward the island of Brač and the deep Milna cove, whose Italian name valle di mille navi is due to its legendary depth and the ability to host a thousand ships. Those who want to experience the local atmosphere of a small island town can spend their first night in Bobovišće cove where most boats moor, while lovers of calm, picturesque nature can sail to the southern shores of this stunning island.

Island of Šolta

island of solta croatia

If your cruise hasn’t started in Šolta, make sure you visit the island as the icing on the cake of your Split yacht charter. This island has similar yachting attributes as the neighboring Brač, but is much smaller and isolated. On island of Šolta , the most desirable destination among boaters is Maslinica, an authentic fishing village that today shines with new splendor and is the proud home of the most beautiful Croatian boutique marina Martinis Marchi .

We also warmly recommend a visit to the picturesque town of Stomorska or the turquoise southern coves that maintain a certain wild feeling to them and are ideal for all fans of intimate lovers of more mysterious moments.

Hvar and Pakleni Islands

town hvar yacht charter

Many boaters who opt for an early check-in during their Split yacht charter immediately decide to cover about twenty-five miles and conquer Pakleni islands, and spend time exploring this enchanting archipelago counting 21 islands, islets and cliffs. Pakleni islands – which sounds like hell islands in Croatian – do not justify their name and are actually as peaceful as you can imagine, seeing how they are actually named after a wood resin – paklina – found around here.

The largest island in this archipelago is St. Clement, and with no southerly wind all of its southern coves are true oases of beauty and pleasure. Stretching west to east, the spacious Soline, the turquoise Taršće, the slightly smaller Stari Stani and the most popular Vinogradišće coves lure with their charms.

On this list is also the too popular Stipanska cove on the islet of Marinkovac, whose vibrant and loud nightlife might not be everyone’s cup of tea. In any case, St. Clement is serene, criss-crossed with trekking paths that connect all its bays and are a great opportunity for an hour or two spent in nature.

hvar pakleni islands croatia boat charter

Should you want a stronger ‘connection’ to the land, either due to unfavorable weather conditions or just in case, ACI Marina Palmižana and the northern shores of St. Clement are only a few miles away, and the mesmerizing beauties of Hvar are at your fingertips.

You can stay in this micro area of Hvar for several days, just like many local families have been doing for decades, but it would be a real shame no to go farther and get to know the entire island.

Vis and beautiful beaches

The southeastern side of Vis and a range of incredibly beautiful islands are only a dozen nautical miles away. We suggest that you first drop your anchor in Stončica, a sandy cove with turquoise water, and take a walk to the nearby lighthouse, among the beautiful in the Adriatic. In its immediate vicinity to the east lies Smokova cove, where even in the high season there aren’t too many boats, and which is known as an ideal destination for playing picigin, a highly addictive local ball game.

Later, you can visit the other sandy haven on the island – the nearby Zaglav cove, where you can indulge in a dive among the many fan mussels, allow yourself to be charmed by the surrounding turquoise or bask in the sun lying on the fine sand that this uninhabited cove is famous for. Right around the corner lies the town of Rukavac, whose northern side is covered in rocky shores, and whose much gentler southern side is a haven with white pebble beaches, like the beloved Tepluš beach. Both sides are suitable for anchoring (in the absence of southerlies) and are separated by a stone pier suitable for docking for vessels with shallow draft.

In case the weather forecast is favorable, spend the night in the turquoise lagoon that mourns the island of Budikovac. This island is a unique microcosm that doesn’t lose its peculiar character even at the peak of the yachting season. A local celebrity Andro Slavić lives in Budikovac all year round, where he has a real small ranch and a uniquely imaginative restaurant.

The next day, as soon as the sun approaches its zenith, let the magical colors of the Green Cave on the neighboring island of Ravnik spill over you. After that, visit another island delight – Srebrna beach, whose name – silver – is a misnomer, as the this cove boasts the most beautiful white pebble beach.

Sailing along the southern shores of Vis in the direction of sunset, you’ll find it hard to choose where to drop your anchor. Ruda cove lures with its almost Caribbean shades of blue, Mala and Vela Travna with imaginative configurations of rocky shores and silky miniature pebble bottoms, and the famous Stiniva is a true masterpiece of Mother Nature. This ‘cove in a cove’ is reminiscent of an exclusive pool, open 24/7 for the lucky ones.

Town Komiza Vis Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

Spend the night in the picturesque fishing village of Komiža if the sky is not frowning from the west, which is usually a sign of bad weather. Drop your anchor at the waterfront or tie your vessel to one of the many buoys, but wherever you stay, make sure you leave Komiža exactly as you found it.

Visit local beaches around Komiža, walk to the most impressive symbol of the town – the church of St. Nicholas, and if you want a unique adventure, rent a bike and conquer the steep, steep road to one of the most spectacular Adriatic lookouts, from where you’ll be able to chose where to turn your bow next. Vis luxury yacht charter is a ideal mixture of magical beaches, pristine nature and delicious local cuisine.

Biševo and Blue cave

biševo island split luxury yacht charter

You can complete your cruise with a visit to the magical Biševo island and the beautiful Blue Cave. A visit to this island some 40 miles toward the open sea almost always remains imprinted into the visitors’ minds ss one of the most beautiful memories from their Split yacht charter, which is why this very special, almost zen destination, deserves a special full-length feature.

One of the best in Croatia. Split is the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic Coast and a favourite starting point for many sailors, the main reason being its central location. This makes it an excellent base for exploring, especially the Dalmatian islands of Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis, but also Korčula, Pelješac and Lastovo to the south or the unique Šibenik-Kornati archipelago to the north.

With Yachts Croatia, you can charter a variety of yachts from Split, bareboat or crewed, ranging from the 10 meter motor boats like Antares 36 and popular catamarans like Sunreef 50 to over 40 meter long luxury yachts like Benetti and luxury sailing yachts like Clase Azul.

There are many things to consider when chartering a yacht, and the size of a yacht is the key factor impacting the price. In our charter section you can find motor and sailing boats, catamarans, luxury sailing yachts and luxury yachts. Through Yachts Croatia listings, a charter vacation on a yacht can range from a minimum of €16,000 per week (22 metre yacht Glorious) to a maximum of €210,000 per week (40 metre yacht Happy Me). The basic price of renting a luxury yacht includes the hire of the yacht, yacht’s insurance and crew service.

Yacht charter area Split on the coast of Dalmatia

From Split , you can sail to the world-famous medieval towns of Hvar and Korčula, as well as to the islands of Mljet, Vis, Lastovo and Biševo. With a beautiful scenic backdrop of fjord-like bays, sandy beaches and the most hours of sunshine in Croatia, Split attracts sailors from all over the world . Split shows its panoramic side to the ship's passengers as soon as they enter the harbour: the palm-lined Riva in front of the broad front of the late Roman imperial palace and the bell tower of the cathedral, which towers over the roofs of the old town.

Yacht charter Split: General information and popular destinations

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is located on a peninsula on the Croatian Adriatic coast. With just under 170,000 inhabitants, it is the economic and cultural centre of the Dalmatian region. Split was founded around the year 305 and is thus one of the oldest Croatian cities. On a cultural discovery tour of the old town, numerous sights and historical treasures can be found. A special visitor magnet is the Diocletian's Palace from the 4th century. Split's city centre with its world-famous palace has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. Another highlight is Split's picturesque harbour promenade, also known as the Riva. As the heart of the city, it enchants tourists and locals with its unique ambience. The impressive cathedral of St. Dominus and the approximately 8-metre-high statue of Gregory of Nin are further sights that should not be missed on a tour of the city.

Directly in the city there are beautiful beaches that invite you to swim. One of the most beautiful beaches is Kasjuni beach. Located on the southern side of the Marjan Forest Park, it is known for its crystal-clear water in a long-stretched bay.

Worthwhile excursion destinations around Split are the towns of Trogir, Šibenik and Zadar. In the immediate vicinity is the Krka National Park with its famous waterfalls. The second closest island, Brač, can be reached ideally by catamaran or sailing boat from Split. Hvar is also a popular destination for a yacht charter from Split .

ACI Marina Split - yacht and sailboat charter

The ACI Marina Split is located in the most beautiful part of the city harbour, north of the island of Sustipan. It is the starting point for the longest and most beautiful promenade on the Adriatic. In 2017, the marina was awarded second place in the category "Best Marina in the Middle Adriatic". Likewise, the marina owner was awarded the "Blue Flag" distinction.

As Split's city harbour is a large ferry port, entering it requires extra attention. It should be noted that departing ships have the right of way when carrying out their manoeuvres and anchoring is not permitted in the entire harbour area.

ACI Marina Split has 318 moorings and 30 dry moorings for sailing yachts, motor boats or catamarans, all equipped with water and electricity connections. With a maximum depth of 9m and spacious docking areas, yachts up to approximately 80m in length can also dock at the marina.

Infrastructure of the ACI Marina Split in Croatia

The Marina Split has a very good infrastructure and all facilities for daily needs. These include:

  • Reception with exchange office
  • Disabled sanitary facilities
  • Technical boat service
  • Grocery store

Shopping at ACI Marina Split

In the marina and in all parts of the city there are good supply possibilities. Provisions for the sailing trip can be found at markets that offer fruit, vegetables and local produce. In addition, supermarket chains such as Lidl or Billa are located about 5 minutes by car from the marina.

Provisioning service with JAM Yacht Supply

The JAM Yacht Supply online shop is a convenient way to order food for your booked sailing holiday. The order can be customised for the sailing yacht so that the food is already on board when you check in.

Petrol station for boats and yachts

The petrol station is located in front of Hotel Marjan.

Getting to Split in Croatia

Marina Split is located only 25 kilometres from Split airport. The transfer from the airport to the marina takes about 30 minutes and can be organised on request. Due to its close proximity to the motorway, Split can also easily be reached by car from Germany and Austria. The distances are:

  • Munich: 850 km
  • Salzburg: 730 km
  • Vienna: 760 km
  • Graz: 575 km

Yacht Charter in Split, Croatia

  • Yacht charter Split

Split is the perfect city to start your summer cruise, thanks to well-equipped ports and transit harbors. The second largest settlement in Croatia, the people in Split have a slow-moving vibe and are relaxed and friendly, even in the peak months of the summer tourist season. The hospitality you will encounter while sailing will knock you off your feet.

sailing yacht charter split

Why choose Split as your starting point?

The sun, sea and sand offer plenty of opportunities for a great sailing experience while in Split – a city which is full of fun, new and exciting things to do. With Latin roots and an Adriatic heritage, Split is a beauty of a city, protected by UNESCO. The waters around Split are mostly calm and warm, perfect for a bareboat charter, if you have a sailing license. If not, it is not a problem to hire a skipper in Split.

What to do and what to visit from Split?

Short trips to the surrounding islands of Brač, Korčula, Vis and Hvar are popular with tourists around Split, but these excursions leave plenty of free room for boat renters to find a secluded bay or a quiet cove. Underwater caves, such as the Blue, Green or Kings cave, are common around these islands and are a great snorkeling spot as well as being unbelievably pretty. There are also numerous extreme sport activities available in the vicinity of Split: canyoning, rock climbing and rafting and cave diving. The architecture of old Split is a shining example of predominantly roman influence on this city. Diocletian`s palace is the main attraction in Split, built by the roman emperor Diocletian, who sought to spent the last years of his reign in the vicinity of the town where he was born. Considering the dimensions and well-preservedness of the palace, it is one of the most important findings of roman architecture in Dalmatia. Other noted architectural attractions include the cathedral of St. Duje, protected by an Egyptian sphynx and built on the exact spot of Diocletian`s mausoleum. Moving on to the fortress of Gripe, built as protection against the Turks and the church of St. John, built on the site of the former Jupiter`s temple. There are, of course, the numerous petite Marianic churches, scattered across the Marjan forest-park, each with its own history and tale to tell. Not to forget the Iron Gate, church of St. Francis, St. Anne`s monastery or Splitksa Peshkarija, the only fishmarket in the world without any flies, built near a live sulfuric well. The historic old core of Split is also full of museums, galleries and manifestations of all kinds: cultural, performative, musical, audio-visual, with Peristil, the heart of Diocletian`s palace, being the main stage for most of the attractions. No reason to miss a chance to breath fresh mountain air and to see the mountains of Biokovo and Mosor. The grace of which the harsh desolate krš terrain blends with green hinterland scenery at the mountain bases is a sight to behold. Gastronomy is one of the core strengths of Split and the surrounding area. Rosemary, basil, garlic, parsley and olive oil are the secret ingredients that make Split cuisine the mouthwatering experience that it is. Natural herbs and spices combined with freshly caught fruits of the sea make bite seem like a little splash of sea and every meal a Mediterranean adventure. Fish is more important than livestock to most local people and so they take special care in preparing fish in many different, ingenious ways. Crabs, oysters and other shellfish are prepared in a broth called Buzara - very tasty! Split is a city with a buzzing night-life, be it festivals, clubs, cultural events or wild nights out - Diocletian nights in the basements of the palace, the Split Cultural Summer and numerous fisherman and pirate nights, to name a few.

When to sail in Split?

All of central Dalmatia, including Split, is characterized by a mild climate with prevailing wet winters and dry and hot summers with lots of sunshine. The nearby mountains offer protection against potentially disruptive weather elements coming from the more mountainous terrain further north-east. The warm Mistral wind, blowing from the west, is a messenger of good weather, whilst Jugo brings with it rain and Bura cold. The average air temperature in summer is 26 degrees Celsius, with maximum reaching as high as 38 degrees. Cooling off in such extreme heat is hardest to do in July and August, when average sea temperatures are 27 degrees Celsius, but for the rest of the year, the sea around Split is a reasonable source of refreshment.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Croatia - Trogir 2022

Supplied by Kali, Nautilus Yachting

Fresh from passing my day skipper, I spent quite a while umming and ahhing as to where I should take the family for our first solo sailing holiday. But when a brand new (2022) Oceanis 40.1 popped up in Trogir during the October half-term, for under £1000, it seemed almost obvious our decision was being made for us. Croatia is a country I have never been to before, and the opportunity to visit Europe's most popular sailing area seemed too good to be true. Also after speaking with a few friends, sailing from Split offered lots of possible itineraries, including lots of sheltered ports to run from the October weather. Perfect... Split it is!

Croatia - Trogir 2022

Day 1 - Saturday, Marina Baotic

The flight to Split was noticeably shorter than my previous flights to Greece. The journey was a little under three hours, from stepping onto the plane at Heathrow to stepping onto the boat in the Marina. A swift start to the holiday. Our flight arrived late in the evening,  and thankfully rather than searching among the 500 or so yachts in the dark, the office had left a really helpful personalised note, as to exactly where our boat was moored and a number to contact just in case.

Once we had unpacked and were fed and watered,  we checked the weather for the week which seemed perfect.   Gentle and Moderate winds from the South East until Wednesday, before the winds reversed and Northerly Winds took over from Wednesday through to Friday.   Nigh on perfect weather for a gentle sail to Sibenik and back.

Saturday, Marina Baotic

Day 2 - Sunday, Trogir - Rogoznica (17nm)

On arrival into Rogoznica, I prepped our crew for mooring, the pilot guide on board helped select our quayside mooring point but as we approached I could see the Harbour Master prepping a spot for us. A stern too mooring spot with lazy lines. Reversing in I got my first mate ready to throw the stern line, the Harbour Master was ready to pass them a lazy line, and i was at the helm. After a tiny bit of shouting and potentially a little more panic than was required we were safely moored for our first night.

Sunday, Trogir - Rogoznica (17nm)

Day 3 - Monday, Rogozniza - Primosten (6nm)

Rogoznica seemed to be one of those small towns where the number of boats outnumbers the number of houses. Fresh water and electricity at the town quay meant we could stay clear of the dubious showers. Numerous shops and bars lined the quayside and that meant we could have a lazy coffee and pastry ashore rather than cook breakfast.

Our chart showed Primosten as just a few miles away and the weather for today was exactly as expected. Our sail today turned out to great day to get some miles under our belt and test out a few gybes with the crew. Fantastic winds ensued and we had winds of 10-12 knots throughout the morning, plus the chance to test out a few maneuvers with the crew. Following lunch on the water and a few maneuvers, playtime was over. We headed to Primosten nice and early, after hearing the marina was quite small. Thankfully there was plenty of room on this smaller town quay.

Again under the eyes of a keen Harbour Master, we moored for the day and within 20 minutes were all safely secured. Primosten offered lots to see and options to explore, following a brief visit to the beach and a strut through the old town. We decided that we have to stop here again on the way back to Trogir and give this town the time it deserved.

Monday, Rogozniza - Primosten (6nm)

Day 4 - Tuesday, Primosten - Sibenik (11nm)

Sailing from Primosten to Sibenik, today was the day I was most looking forward to on the trip. I have heard about the National Park and Waterfalls in Krka for a few years now I felt this would be one of the days key to my time in Croatia. Keen to get going we left Primosten just after breakfast and 'sailed' to Sibenik. The winds were super light today (less than 5kts) and the journey was quite a short one on the motor. Arriving into Sibenik, I was suprised at how big the city was, it has a lively waterfront, a fuel station and to my crew's delight a Mcdonalds' within walking distance.

Once moored, for such a large town it was strange to see this was our first town quay without full facilities however the ability to get to Krka National Park certainly made up for it. We climbed into a local taxi and made our way to the National Park.

Lots of different paths of varying lengths make their way through the park and we very happily spent the rest of the day trekking past what felt like a new waterfall around each corner.

Tuesday, Primosten - Sibenik (11nm)

Day 5 - Wednesday, Sibenik - Primosten (11nm)

Now officially on the return leg, we could relax a little more, as we were simply heading back 'Home'. Our confidence on board was really high, also aided by winds almost Ionian in nature and the ability to motor along on smooth glassy water. All the scare stories of freezing 'Bura' winds of late October seemed a million miles away from 25 Degrees and less than two knots of wind we had on this return leg.

Pootling along, with almost no other boats on the water, we could have stopped to look at St Nicholas 16th Century Citadel on the way out of Sibenik but we were keen to get to Primosten as soon as we could.

Arriving at Primosten just after lunchtime we arrived at the same time as lots of Croatians that head to Primosten for a day out due to its great beach and relaxed feel. This time around we were going to make the most of Primosten and had enough time to hit the beach and explore the winding streets of its walled city and hilltop church.

Primosten is certainly a stop worth adding to an itinerary. I would recommend it to anyone heading North from Split.

Wednesday, Sibenik - Primosten (11nm)

Day 6 - Thursday Primosten - Trogir (20nm)

Due to time constraints, today was our final day sailing and our longest day on the water we needed to return to Trogir. We headed out of Primosten on the motor. Then after an hour of motoring, the wind picked up and we had a fantastic stretch of real sailing. Twelve to fifteen knots of wind pushed us along a sailing either a broad reach or running dead downwind. The sailing was nice and stable and that kept the crew happy while cruising along at between 4-6 knots was enough to keep almost any sailor happy. Compared to the non-existent winds of yesterday this was very much a welcomed change and by far the best sailing conditions for the week. A little under five hours later we pulled into the fuel station in Trogir for a top-up and back into the Marina.

Mercifully the easy berth that we left five days ago was available for us to slip right back into. I would never forgive myself if we had five days issue free and then caused a scrape in the final 100 meters. Needless to say, I should have had more faith in my crew as by now we were a well-oiled machine and piloted the boat, back into its spot with minimal stress.

Overall a fantastic break on the water, and the fears of Croatia being a very expensive, cold October destination were completely dashed. I have to admit we were really lucky with the amazing weather for the entire week but for the price, availability of yachts, and lack of other boats on the water I would happily recommend it!

JOANSEA - Catamaran Charter Split & Boat hire in Croatia 2

Croatia's second city Split has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 and has a range of old buildings and alleys that will treat the eye. Wandering the narrow streets of the Old Town you shouldn't miss Diocletian's Palace, from where much of the Roman Empire was ruled back in the day. While perhaps tasting the excellent food and wine as you wander, another spot should be the Riva port area, where you can enjoy the sunset after dinner.

If you're feeling energetic, a plod up Marjan hill to see the astounding views of the coast and nearby beautiful islands is a must. Back down at sea level you can relax on one of Split's beautiful beaches such as Bacvice, just a short walk along the waterfront from the port.

Out of the ACI Marina Split, you can begin your crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter, and go on to explore the Croatian coastline and islands at your leisure. Where would you like to go on your boat rental? Whether Dubrovnik, Hvar or the Kornati Islands, the choice is yours on your Split catamaran charter with Borrow a Boat!

Crewed Catamaran Charters from Split

You don't need to worry about qualifications or even sailing the boat in Croatia with Borrow a Boat! A Split crewed catamaran charter on a motor catamaran or sailing catamaran can mean you do as much or as little physically sailing the yacht as you like.

A skippered yacht charter will mean that the skipper will be aboard with their own cabin to attend to all your needs. A crewed yacht charter will involve one or two crew on the gulet who will cook, sail and make suggestions as to your best destinations on your sailing itinerary.

As to you? You can just enjoy the breezes and views, or if you fancy learning a bit about sailing, help the skipper or crew to get the boat from A-B.

A Split crewed yacht charter will cost a little more (typically €150 a day for a skipper and €100 per crew member) and it's the done thing to thank them with a tip at the end of the week.

Bareboat Catamaran Charter From Split

A bareboat catamaran charter will mean that you can take the yacht out on your own. Generally for vessels up to 20 metres LOA on a sailing license such as an RYA Day Skipper or ASA 104 Bareboat certificate, you will have total responsibility for the yacht.

You will need to think about your itinerary, victualling, possible secondary ports should a marina be full, as well as issues like weather and mooring fees.

On a bareboat charter you will be asked to pay for insurance in the form of a security deposit on departure or through buying charter insurance before you go on your sailing holiday.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Split:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below charter yacht types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Sailing Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamarans: These motor yacht catamarans are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Areas Itineraries From Split

On your crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter you can explore the Dalmatian coast or beautiful islands to your heart's content. Here we suggest a 7 day sailing holiday and a 14 day holiday on your charter boat:

7 Days - Dalmatian Coast and Islands: As a first leg on your sailing yacht or motor boat you will head out to the party island of Hvar. Northeast to the Croatian coast, this time to the town of Rognozica. After another sail, the third night will be on the beautiful islands of the Kornatic archipelago with its unique wildlife and geology and world renowned national park. The 5th night will be in Biograd, before returning SE to Trogir, just across the bay from Split.

14 Days - Dubrovnik and the Croatian Coast: Perhaps on a gulet charter or bareboat, here is an opportunity to head SE to the stunning old city of Dubrovnik. Hvar will be your first port of call, before island hopping via Korcula and Mljet to Dubrovnik, perhaps pausing for an evening or two on uninhabited islands as you go. Return along the Croatian coast, stopping at Slano, Loviste and Sucuraj on the opposite end of Hvar island to the party town you spent the first night, and then head for Makarska, Rogac and then for a final night, Trogir for the evening before handover.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Split

If you are on a skippered catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail out of Split, you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries such as Croatia a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Split (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Split?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

Frequently asked questions

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Is sailing in Croatia safe?

Generally, Croatia is one of the safest countries in the world. Overall crimes in Croatia are quite low making it safe to travel around. By land, or at sea, vacations in Croatia should be on your bucket list.

This Mediterranean gem is the cradle of sailing holidays and a true paradise for sailing inclined. With warm and calm Adriatic sea, pleasant weather, abundance of sunshine, moderate winds and warm local people is a must-visit for beginners or experienced sailors.

Is visiting Croatia expensive?

Overall, Croatia has moderate prices compared to other European countries. Locals say that prices along the Croatian coast rise as you travel from north to south. Seaside places and Dalmatian islands  like Hvar can be considerable expensive, while  Istria peninsula   and Kvarner  gulf still keep their prices comparable to the inland.

Some prices along Croatian coast:

  • cup of coffee 1.5€
  •  pint of local beer 2.5€
  •  1,5l bottled water from store 0.7€
  •  public transport 1-2€ one way
  • 1 bottle of local medium quality wine in store 6€
  •  average 3- course dinner 25-30€/person

Total trip cost really depends on where and how you choose to spend your money and the travelling habits. Yacht charter prices in Croatia are still 10-15% cheaper than other sailing destinations Italy, Greece or Spain. You can easily get around on daily budget app. 30-40€/person/day.

Can you swim in Croatia in September?

Both months September and October are the perfect months for a relaxing sailing cruise in Croatia . The sea temperatures are pleasant for swimming and still above 20 o (70F). The southern islands near Split (Hvar, Vis and Korcula) still have abundance of sunshine, and the air keeps constant 25 o (77F) during the day until late October.

Yacht charters in Split and Trogir  also reduce the rental prices somewhere in the middle of September. You can expect a affordable sailing vacations with budget sailboat prices if you book your holiday cruise in early spring or October.

What should I bring on a yacht charter?

Remember and pack light

With plenty of sun, Croatia is one of the sunniest European destinations . The climate along the Adriatic coast in summer is quite dry and hot. If your sailing trip is in summer, just bring bathing suite, extra swimming towels, and your personal wardrobe (not too much). In case of rain you need to bring some warm clothes, maybe a light sweater, water resistant wind jacket and a pair of sneakers with rubber sole.

It is highly recommended to bring your soft handbag a duffel bag  or rucksack instead of a plastic suitcase, simply to gain more space in your cabin. Please read about the Sail Croatia Packing List for newbies.

8 Things you Don't want to forget:

  •   booking papers and boarding pass
  •   sun protection items (sun lotion, sunglasses for UV protection, hat)
  •   bathing suit or a swimsuit
  •   your passport, or personal ID, enough cash, health insurance
  •   swimming towels
  •   your personal items (prescription pills, medicine for allergy...)
  •   a wind stopper or a wind breaker in summer a long-sleeved cardigan would do
  •   positive vibes (leave your worries at home)

  • Sailing from Split – 7-day itinerary

Explore the sunniest part of Croatia with the most beautiful islands in the world. Central Dalmatia is rich in stunning bays, romantic and touristic beaches, medieval towns, and unspoiled places. A week-long holiday won’t be enough for you to explore it all. The following sailing itinerary is a sneak peek of what is ahead of you during your 7-day sailing trip south of Split.

As soon as you get your boat in Split (for example, in ACI marina Split , which is closest to the city centre), you have got two options: enjoy a stroll through the historic streets or, especially in the high season, set sail on Saturday in the afternoon to avoid traditional boat traffic.

This itinerary will offer you the best places for sailing starting from Split. But before you plan your sailing trip, do not forget to consider sailing conditions. Factors like the best season for sailing and maritime infrastructure are covered in our article with many other recommendations for your sailing holiday in Croatia .

Islands worth visiting on your 7-day sailing trip are Šolta , which is less visited by tourists, Vis – an island frozen in time, worldwide known islands of Brač and Hvar , peaceful Šćedro island, and if you still didn’t run out of time, visit the lush green island of Korčula and the neighbouring, almost untouched Lastovo island. You are not going to forget them any time soon!

Tip: Once the strong Jugo wind is about to be blowing for a week straight, give it a thought and sail north of Split.

Suggested 7-day sailing itinerary: Split - Šolta (Šešula/Jorja) - Vis (Komiža) - Šćedro (Manastir) - Hvar (Vrboska) - Brač (Milna) - Split

Getting your itinerary ready for such a stunning area popular with tourists can be a tough one, especially in high season. Many cruise ships and ferries, including yachts, sail along the islands. We recommend you book your mooring spot in popular marinas and bays via the app MySea or SeaSy . Furthermore, reserving a berth in advance will ensure that you won’t have to wait. Depending on the location, Croatia’s mooring fees can be costly. Be sure to look at the price lists before choosing a spot.

You can easily adjust the suggested itinerary to your sailing skills and the mood of your crew aboard. The strong bora or jugo can surprise you here as well. We also included in your itinerary a stopover on the island of Vis. By any means, you will not regret visiting this farthest offshore, inhabited Adriatic island. However, if you feel like some routes between the islands of Vis, Šćedro, and the northern part of Hvar are way too time-consuming, opt for an overnight stay in one of the well-protected bays on Pakleni archipelago.

In the high season, you can skip some popular spots, such as the most photographed Meditteranean beach of Zlatni Rat on Brač island or the blue cave of Biševo. Visit them instead in the low season because crowds of tourists can ruin your experience.

Here are our recommendations for your sailing routes from Split. Overall, this sailing itinerary is approximately 140-150 nautical miles (nm).

Day 1 (Saturday):  Check-in at Marina Split (0 nm)

Day 2 (Sunday):  Split - Šolta (Šešula/Jorja) (14 - 18 nm)

Day 3 (Monday): Šolta - Vis (Komiža) (24 nm)

Day 4 (Tuesday): Vis - Stiniva (Vis) - the island of Šćedro (32 nm)

Day 5 (Wednesday): Šćedro - Dubovica beach on the Hvar island, or Pakleni island with a bay of Soline/Vinogradišće - Hvar (Vrboska) (35 nm)

Day 6 (Thursday): Hvar (Vrboska) - Brač (Blača) - Brač (Milna) (21 nm)

Day 7 (Friday):  Brač - Šolta (Ragač) - Split (17 nm)

You can find the route on Google Maps on this link .

The route for the Navionics map is here .

Map of the sailing itinerary from Split around the Croatian islands.

Day 1 (Saturday) - Split

Saturday is a chaotic day within every marina, and it applies especially to one of the largest Dalmatian marinas. So, once you get everything ready and settled, start your onshore exploration. Split – the second largest city in Croatia – is truly worth visiting, and you can reach the city centre from the marina in 30 minutes. While walking along the coast, head to the extensive and busy Riva promenade, lined with palm trees. The street artists will make your walk pretty enjoyable, and you will also be pleased by the view of the historic buildings and the sea. Before reaching Riva, you can also stop by at Fabrique pub for a massive portion of grilled food. The interior is excellent, and the staff is handy. In addition, there are several cafés to choose from in the Riva pedestrian zone. While in the city centre, you can also enjoy a delicious dinner in the Makarun – almost a Michelin-level restaurant.

For a stunning view of the open Adriatic sea, head to the Marjan forest park, or you can also hike up to the Belvedere viewpoint or the Vrh Telegrin.

Day 2 (Sunday) - Split - Šolta (Šešula/Jorja) - 14 - 18 nm

Tourists often skip the island of Šolta; however, it is a beautiful and unspoiled place that will win your heart for its Dalmatian authenticity, dense green forests smelling of pine trees, and famous local gastronomy.

Places worth seeing

Take a break from sailing in one of the northern bays,  Stomorska or Nečujam . If you fancy sandy beaches, you will enjoy your time at the hidden and small bay Šipkova. The most beautiful and emptier beaches are on the island’s south side; we recommend the bays of Tatinja, Jorja, and Stračinska.

Šolta is also known for several gastronomic specialities. Treat yourself to the local Dobričić red wine made from the local grapes. In addition to wine, the island is known for its traditional beekeeping, and local rosemary honey will make a grateful souvenir. The local olive oil is of high quality.

Although tourists visit Šolta less frequently, we recommend booking moorings in advance. Marina Maslinica in the sympathetic town of Maslinica is a well-known marina. It is, however, relatively expensive, smaller, and sanitary facilities are usually occupied.

Aerial view of the Maslinica marina, houses with orange roofs and anchored ships

If you don’t feel like spending the night in the marina, moor on a buoy in the neighbouring and well-protected Šešula bay . Arrive there early and make a reservation because it is often crowded in the summer. For a quality and affordable dinner, visit the peaceful restaurant Konoba Šešula which has friendly and helpful staff.

Other famous bays in the north are Nečujam (mooring with an anchor) and Stomorsk (mooring lines). These bays, however, do not provide enough protection during bora.

On the southern side of the island, in the bays of Tatinja , Senjska, and Stračinska , drop an anchor and tie your boat to the shore. Neither one of the bays is protected against the jugo. The “secret” tip for a visit is a lovely Jorja bay, where it is possible to anchor on a buoy if you eat at an excellent local restaurant Lero . Moreover, Jorja bay is an exceptional place for a sleepover. Your reward for today’s cruise will be a breathtaking view from the restaurant on the hill.

Day 3 (Monday) - Šolta - Vis (24 nm)

The island of Vis is a positive surprise for every visitor. Vis was closed off from foreign visitors until 1989 when it ceased being a military base. Today, it feels as if time has stood still. Tourist resorts, large hotels, or vast beaches are absent – you will find here pristine nature, experience a long fishing tradition, and visit several most beautiful beaches in the country.

Places worth visiting

The charming port town of Komiža will win you over for its friendly atmosphere, delicious fish, and local wines of vugava and plavac. Komiža was founded back in the 12th century by Benedictine monks, and the port kept its ancient atmosphere until today. The town of Vis on the opposite side of the island is also worth a visit. By the way, both of these ports served as a backdrop for the sequel to Mamma Mia.

Vis is known for its diverse beaches every step of the way – there are pebble, rocky, sandy, and several nudist beaches. If you have some free time left on the following day, pay a visit to the wild and romantic Stiniva bay and its beach, which has long been rated one of the TOP beaches in Europe. Once there, you can observe an interesting phenomenon – half of the beach is always in the shade because of the cliff.

Cliff with boats and Stiniva beach

Numerous local vineyards, citrus and olive groves, exotic palm trees, and pine trees emphasize the island’s purity, and the citrus scent will accompany you throughout your whole stay on Vis. In addition, divers will be attracted by several wrecks hidden in the depths of the sea.

The small island of Biševo, with a stunning Blue cave that creates magical scenery on the water surface, is nearby. Come by between 9:30 and 11:30 to experience the incredible display of colours and lights. Although the cave is beautiful, don’t feel compelled to visit it during summer, for there are huge crowds of impatient tourists. In recent years, anchoring the ship here and driving to the cave has been forbidden, so you will need to rely on the nervous cave operators. However, the bay of Biševska Luka, with a lovely sandy beach and a restaurant, is also worth visiting in the high season. Unfortunately, the bay is not well-protected from strong winds.

Another beautiful cave, Zelena, is on the tiny neighbouring island of Ravnik. Like Blue cave, get ready for crowds of ships in front of it in high season. If you long for a cave visit, opt for the good and so far little-known spot – the biggest cave on the island of Vis – Kraljičina (Queen’s cave). It is located in the northern part of the island, nearby to Oključina bay. You can visit the bay with a cave, a small pebble beach, and a half-empty town on your way from Šolta to Komiža.

We recommend you moor on a buoy in a bay in front of the town of Komiža . A local water taxi will take you onshore. An alternative is to tie up your boat at the town harbour’s pier. During your stay in Komiža, we recommend you dine at Jastožera restaurant, known for its fresh lobsters, which you get to choose for yourself. Even if you opt for a different dining place, it will not be a bad call as most local restaurants offer a quality gastronomic experience.

Overnight stay in the Vis port is much more difficult. Not only due to noise but also because of the east winds, waves created by ferries, and, unfortunately, frequent sewer odours.

Day 4 (Tuesday) - Vis - Stiniva bay - Šćedro (32 nm)

If translated, the island of Šćedro means “generous”, and it is entirely accurate to say this small island will generously reward you with its stunning beauty and wilder character. Furthermore, due to the absence of cars, ferries, and protected nature, Šćedro holds a reputation as Croatia’s most peaceful island.

We recommend staying in the Manastir bay on a mooring buoy (3 meters long mooring ropes hang from it) and, just in case, making a reservation at local restaurant Moster. From here, you can reach the ruins of an old 16th-century Dominican monastery. Be aware the bay is not well-protected from bora.

Konoba Moster in Manastir bay will pleasantly surprise you with locally grown ingredients, fresh-caught fish, and homemade wine. Konoba is owned by two brothers who live here all year round, and they run an ecologically aware and sustainable business. As a result, this restaurant is not among the cheapest.

Another famous bay in the area is Lovišće bay; however, strong gusts of wind can bother you at night. In such a case, it is safer to anchor in the western tip of the bay.

Sea and Forests in Lovisce bay

Day 5 (Wednesday) - Šćedro - Hvar (Vrboska) or Pakleni (35nm)

Get ready to sail longer distances today. Your route will take you from Šćedro towards the neighbouring Hvar, and if all is safe and sound, you will stop by at the Pakleni archipelago. Sailing around Hvar while getting to know its bays and towns would be worth a week-long cruise.

Hvar is fairly considered a king among the Dalmatian islands. Croatia’s most beautiful and most popular island, Hvar, is also nicknamed a “lavender island”, for you can find lavender sachets for sale everywhere. Lush vegetation and the most significant number of sunny days make it a real Croatian Madeira.

Aerial view of the town of Hvar and the Pakleni Islands

On the way to your final destination for today, stop by in a small Dubovica bay on the south side of Hvar and take a dip in the sea. You can also take a break and moor in Vinogradišće bay with a sandy beach (a fee for a buoy is charged also for a short stay) or head to Solina bay on the island of St. Clement. While sailing along the Pakleni archipelago, watch out for crowds of kayakers. Caution is also in place as you sail through Splitska vrata (the strait between the islands of Šolta and Brač) since most boats and ferries take this route.

Pakleni archipelago is confusingly translated as Hell islands, however, they are not even close to that. The tranquil Paklenis are breathtaking, paradise islands with their name derived from the word paklina – the pine resin used for painting ships.

Hvar, Stari Grad, Vrbovska, Jelsa, and Sučuraj are the most beautiful towns on the island of Hvar. Hvar is a busy party town, visited even by celebrities, yet keeping its unmistakable ancient charm. The Stari Grad town is one of the oldest European towns, and it is significantly quieter compared to Hvar. Both Vrbovska and Jelsa are picturesque and peaceful ports. Due to its location on the eastern tip of the island, Sučuraj is often overlooked, which makes it an ideal destination for those who prefer intimate towns.

There are numerous beautiful and lonely bays worth anchoring on the eastern side of the Hvar island. Even though this part of Hvar is not included in your itinerary, our recommendations go for the picturesque bays of Mrtinovnik, Smarska, and Pokrivenik .

If the wind and overall conditions are in your favor, set sailing to Marina Vrboska on the Brač island. You can choose either the town pier or a more distant and expensive ACI marina. The town of Vrboska was given the nickname of “Little Venice” for its renaissance style and numerous small bridges across the channel. There is also a pretty church resembling a fortress with a view of the surrounding region. If you crave a tasty dinner, you can stop by, for example, in Škojič restaurant.

In case you decide to sail for a shorter distance, you can stay for the night in one of the bays on Pakleni islands. Namely on St. Clement island, instead of anchoring on the ever-packed Vinogradišće bay, we recommend staying in Solina bay, where you can secure your boat with an anchor or use a mooring buoy. Several buoys belong to the pleasant Paradiso restaurant. You can also opt for an ACI marina Palmižana on the north part of St. Clement island, however, be aware of lower depth in the marina, strong waves during bora, and arbitrary handling of mooring lines by local staff, that might get caught in your propeller.

If the town’s nightlife doesn’t bother you, the beautiful Hvar is a good choice for an overnight stay, but there is a lack of space already in the early afternoon. Stari Grad , referred to by many as the most beautiful town on Hvar, offers good mooring with water and electricity.

Day 6 (Thursday) - Vrboska - Milna (21 nm)

In case you stayed overnight in the marina Vrboska, your final destination for the day is the island of Brač and the old fishing town of Milna . Brač is renowned for its phenomenal beach of Zlatni Rat – the largest coastal attraction and the most visited beach in Croatia. On the other hand, if you spent the night on Pakleni islands or in the town of Hvar, Vrboska can be your final destination today.

The saying goes that while being on Brač island, you should relax at least for a while on the sandy beach of Zlatni Rat. Ideally, however, in the off-season. Brač may also be best known for its radiant white limestone, which adorns Diocletian’s Palace in Split. It has also been used for building many local houses. As the highest island in the Adriatic, Brač offers you the possibility to hike the Vidova Gora with a rewarding view of impressive beaches and nearby Hvar.

Aerial view of Zlatni rat beach in Croatia

Popular destinations such as towns Milna, Sutivan, and Supetar will delight fans of historic and fishing ports. The local gourmet speciality of the island of Brač is not fish but lamb. Its taste stands out even better if combined with the local red wine.

Tip: In case you stay on Brač longer, there is a romantic beach in a bay near Murvica settlement with a secret Dragon cave . It contains carved religious paintings whose author and meaning remain a mystery. The cave is locked from the public, it is necessary to organize a tour in advance with a local guide. Since the tour and the hike take approximately 4 hours altogether, we recommend visiting this attraction in case of a longer stay on Brač.

Anchoring near Zlatni Rat beach is prohibited. On your way from the marina Vrboska, you can moor in Bol, a popular holiday destination, and relax on the famous beach. Blača bay is a nice and uninhabited spot suitable for swimming or overnight stays. Former Blača Hermitage monastery is just 45 minutes away on foot. When anchoring in this bay, tie up your boat ashore. Be careful when throwing an anchor, there is a tree with branches at the bottom, and the bottom is also rocky in some places.

While in Milna, you can stay overnight in the marina Vlaska or ACI Marina Milna . Both marinas are well-protected from all winds. There is even a nice beach near the marina Vlaska where you take a pleasant evening dip.

Milna is a small town that you can explore in a short time. If you visit during summer, you might get lucky to experience one of the numerous local cultural events. Tasty Bago restaurant is just behind the corner from marina Vlaska (in addition to fish, they also serve lamb). A good place for taking a bite near the ACI marina is Palma restaurant.

Day 7 (Friday) - sailing towards Split (17 nm)

Enjoy your last day at sea by relaxing in one of the bays on the eastern side of the Brač island. Bobovišće bay (mooring buoy) or Stipanska (anchoring) are good spots for a pleasant swim.

Tip: On Friday afternoon, large rows of ships gather near the ACI Marina Split, in front of the gas station. We, therefore, recommend avoiding the chaos and refueling in Rogač on the island of Šolta, or in Milna on Brač island.

Alternative itineraries

Boost your inspiration with other sailing possibilities south from Split.

  • For more experienced and sailing-greedy yachtsmen we recommend leaving Split already on Saturday afternoon and including in your itinerary Lastovo – the most remote, inhabited island in Croatia. This is an example of your sailing itinerary: Split - Vis - Korčula Vela Luka - Lastovo (Zaklopatica) - town of Korčula – Šćedro island - Hvar (Hvar or Vrboska) or Brač (Milna) - Split.
  • Beginner yachtsmen or families with kids would enjoy safer sailing conditions between the Croatian coast and the islands of Šolta/Brač/and partially, Hvar.
  • Split - Pakleni islands (ACI marina Palmižana or Luka Soline bay) - the town of Korčula with a stopover on the island of Šćedro - Korčula Vela Luka - town of Hvar - Milna on Brač island - Split

We believe that after a week-long cruise in this beautiful area, you will be coming back for there are many more attractive places to explore. A call of the Adriatic sea can be powerful. And Boataround team  will be happy to help you with the choice of your boat or the itinerary.

Note: We used the Navionics app to calculate the route length. As an example, we used a boat with a length of up to 15 meters, a draft of 3 meters (such as Elan 50 ), and an average speed of 5 knots per hour.)

Amazing! We went on a 7 day cruise on Kompas boat ‘My Way’ starting at Dubrovnik and making our way to Split and back to Dubrovnik. The whole experience was amazing. The rooms on the boat were a good size. There were 33 people of different nationalities on board. The staff were fantastic and very attentive. We had breakfast and lunch on board and then the evening was free to explore the different towns we visited. The food on board was absolutely amazing.

Very good experience I had a trip Trogir, Salon and Klis with Karlo. Karlo is a great guide, very talkative, kind, knowledgeable in history, open to adjust trip to the needs of a visitor, allows visitors to take time when they want to wait at some place, he is local, so has first hand information about people and recent history.

Day to remember! We hade a awesome day on the sea! It was a bit a long waiting line on the Blue Cave but everything else was perfect. Stiniva beach is the place that I want to visit again. I recommend this tour to anyone!
