What is the Rolex Yacht-Master? What differentiates it from other models? Here’s your answer (based on The Rolex Report by John E. Brozek) from wikipedia:

The Rolex Yacht-Master is a popular sport watch made by Rolex, first introduced in 1992 with the model 11628 in 18KT yellow gold. In 1994, Rolex released a lady’s model (69628) and a mid-size man’s model (68628), which was the first time Rolex had ever issued a smaller professional size watch. In 1996, Rolex introduced two-tone (stainless steel and 18kt yellow gold) to the ladies and mid-size line. In 1997, Rolex released the Yacht-Master in Rolesium, a term patented by Rolex in 1932 which gives the Yacht-Master a stainless steel and platinum construction; the bezel and dial are platinum, while the case, band, crown, etc. are stainless steel. This model is also known as the Platinum Yacht-Master.

Lorena Ochoa’s Lady Yacht-Master . Lorena won two major LPGA championships and was ranked number one from 2007 to 2010. Unfortunately for golf fans, you won’t see more of her on the pro tour because she decided to retire at a young age.

Hulk Hogan : What do Bruce Willis and Hulk Hogan have in common? Well, they’re both manly men. They both have amazing biceps. Both are A-Listers in their own field – Bruce in Hollywood and Hulk in wrestling. And they both belong to the “Celebrity Rolex Yacht-Master Watch Club”.

Lionel Messi and his Rolex Yacht-Master

What kind of watch do you wear for your first day at a new job? If you’re Lionel Messi, the answer is easy: a Rolex .

The Argentinian soccer star was spotted wearing a gorgeous rose gold Yacht-Master as he arrived in Paris to sign with PSG on Tuesday afternoon. The sporty-yet-elegant timepiece was an appropriate choice for a player signing his first contract with a team other than the one he grew up playing for.

Barcelona shocked the sports world last week when it announced that Messi would be leaving the club after 21 years. Years of financial mismanagement and a newly implemented salary cap meant the Spanish club could no longer to afford to pay him , even after he agreed to a drastically reduced new contract. Monday’s tearful goodbye to the Barca faithful suggested that Messi probably isn’t overjoyed to be moving to the French capital, but it’s clear he’s trying to make the most of a difficult situation. And the first step in that process was showing up to his new job with a smile on his face, “This is Paris” stamped across his t-shirt and a Yacht-Master on his wrist.

And what a timepiece Messi chose for his first day. The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, ref. 126655 , is a true beauty that has been referred to as an “era-defining timepiece” by this magazine. It has a 40mm 18 karat Everose gold case that houses a black dial and is topped with a matte black ceramic bezel. It’s powered by the watchmaker’s new-generation 3225 automatic movement, has a 70-hour power reserve and a durable Oysterflex bracelet with a matching Everose safety clasp. It retails for $27,300, which is no small sum, but then again Messi’s new two-season contract is believed to be worth roughly $40 million a year .

Meanwhile, the soccer star’s Rolex wasn’t the only luxury watch on display on Tuesday. During the formal announcement of Messi’s contract, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi could be seen wearing the new Patek Philippe Nautilus . You know, the one with the olive-green sunburst dial that has become virtually impossible to find since its release this spring? Of course, when you make $40 million a year, or are able to write a check for that much, in-demand watches are just a little bit easier to find.

Can You Guess Which Celeb Chef Sports the Yacht-Master II?

rolex yacht master celebrity

It’s dynamite!

Known for his bold and brash flavors, style, and personality, celebrity chef Guy Fieri has risen to the top of the Food Network ever since he won a competition to secure his very own show back in 2006. It’s said that Guy’s shows attract more viewers than any other host on the food-focused channel. His approachable manner and charisma have won the hearts (and taste buds) of millions of viewers across the country and globe. Aside from his cooking shows and tv hoseting gigs, Guys is also a thriving author and restaurateur. In fact, he was already a successful restaurant owner and chef prior to landing his television spots. Given his over the top ways, it comes as no surprise that Guy would opt for Rolex’s loudest statement watch — the yellow gold Yacht-Master II — to complement his personal style.

On news stands today! Wow! what an honor to be on the cover of @successmagazine ! A photo posted by Guy Fieri (@guyfieri) on May 10, 2016 at 1:56pm PDT

For all his legions of adoring fans, Guy is also behind the eatery that was the subject of an epic takedown by a New York Times review. That now infamous scathing critique of Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar is the most read restaurant review of all time . Much like Guy himself, his watch of choice, the Rolex Yacht-Master II , elicits strong emotions from onlookers. There’s not much room for the in-between.

Yacht-Master II ref. 116688

Rolex yellow gold Yacht-Master II ref. 116688

The Rolex Yacht-Master II made its debut at Baselworld 2010. With its considerable 44mm size case, it’s the largest watch in the current Rolex catalog. The Yacht-Master II is available in four different versions: steel, yellow gold, steel/Everose gold, and white gold/platinum. The Yacht-Master II Guy wears on his wrist is the Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116688, which is the full 18k yellow gold version. The ref. 116688 sports the Cerachrom ceramic bezel in a bright blue shade and its white dial is full of numbers, indicators, and information.

Great gift from a great friend ! @brandonbernstein1 A photo posted by Guy Fieri (@guyfieri) on Apr 12, 2016 at 3:40pm PDT

Due to its distinct look, many are taken aback with the model. At first glance, the Yacht-Master II may look very different to other Rolex sports watches, yet, at the fundamental level, it still brings about that same spirit. Firstly, the Yacht-Master II is not just for show — it’s a tool watch for yachtsmen. That’s right, just like the Submariner is for divers and GMT-Master is for pilots , the Yacht-Master II has features, like the regatta timer, for competitive sailors. If you’re not a sailor, this may not serve a purpose at all, however, it’s still a very cool technical achievement by Rolex. Plus, the bezel actually controls parts of the Rolex 4146 mechanical movement within, hence its name, the Ring Command Bezel. And that’s something to appreciate from a technical point of view.

Just like other Rolex sports watches, the Yacht-Master II boasts all the details that make these watches so great. The 18k yellow Oyster bracelet has the Easylink system to allow for adjustments, while the Oyster case is waterproof to 330 feet (100 meters).

Such a great time with the boys. @hunterfieri #NBAAllStarWeekend #NBAAllstarTO A photo posted by Guy Fieri (@guyfieri) on Feb 14, 2016 at 8:15pm PST

While the Yacht-Master II may not be for everyone’s taste, it’s a loud and proud watch that isn’t afraid to show off its aesthetics and technical achievements.

LeBron’s Rolex Yacht-Master Is Absolutely Dripping in Diamonds

By Oren Hartov

LeBrons Rolex YachtMaster Is Absolutely Dripping in Diamonds

Given his stature as one of the most stylish players in basketball, it’s little surprise that LeBron James’s watch collection is both vast and full of pieces we mortals would have trouble ever getting our hands on. (See here , here , and here .) The face of Louis Vuitton’s latest menswear campaign under the direction of Pharrell , King James is constantly bringing the sartorial and horological heat—and all this while remaining the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.

LeBron James looks on during the game between the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium

At the Browns-Rams game this past Sunday, he was spotted with yet another excellent watch: a Rolex Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126655 . The Yacht-Master , which debuted in 1992, is a sort of elevated take on the Submariner inspired by the yachting world. With its bi-directional, 60-minute Cerachrom bezel, it could otherwise be confused with the brand’s famed dive watch—but its precious-metal (and titanium) configurations, optional rubber bracelets, and special dials set it apart.

The ref. 126655, cased in Everose gold and paired to a rubber Oysterflex strap, is available with a sporty black dial—but that’s not the option Bron sprang for. James’s particular example features a sparkling, pavé diamond dial that could conceivably reflect sunlight back into space, it’s so darn lustrous. With its applied, luminous hour plots, Mercedes handset, and date window at 3 o’clock, it’s still readily identifiable as a Rolex sports watch—only with a luxurious twist. Sure, you could take this watch for a swim—it’s water resistant to 300m, after all—but put it in a stadium seat on the wrist of one of the most famous athletes in the world, and it truly shines.

What’s notable about this piece is that it’s a factory-dial watch; visible on the Rolex website , it’s ( theoretically ) out there in the world for anyone with $46,600—and a long-established history with their authorized dealer—to snag. James seems to embrace both catalog and off-catalog pieces, meaning those whose sales are restricted and which aren’t publicized; these are typically high-gem pieces such as the “Eye of the Tiger” Daytona previously seen on his wrist earlier this year .

With a collection that spans Rolex sport watches, crazy Richard Mille pieces , black ceramic Royal Oaks , and more, James has more than proven his horological bona fides. All he needs to do now is work with Pharrell on a La Fabriques du Temps -produced Louis Vuitton watch. Now that would be a collab for the ages.

Robert Downey Jr. attends the 2023 Academy Museum Gala at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Robert Downey Jr’s Cartier Santos Dumont

One can always count on RDJ for a good horological showing—I mean, who else moves seamlessly from fairly standard fare like the TAG Heuer Monaco to a liquid-filled HYT ? The Iron Man star shook things up further this week when he strapped on a most excellent (and highly rare) Cartier Santos-Dumont for the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. A recent debut from this past year’s Watches & Wonders show in Geneva , the ref. CRWGSA0053 features a 31.5mm lacquered burgundy case paired to a silver Roman numeral dial and a matching red ruby cabochon crown. Powered by an ultra-thin, hand-wound movement, it’s a striking take on a historically important watch—and the perfect accessory for an actor as gripping and unpredictable as Downey.

Busta Rhymes and Mark Wahlberg attend the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation Celebrity Invitational Gala

Mark Wahlberg’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex made subtle updates to its nearly-impossible-to-snag Cosmograph Daytona chronograph for its 60th anniversary this year, including small changes to the hour markers and (for the first time since 2000) a new movement. Wahlberg was clearly quick to secure himself an allocation of the “panda dial” variant, a reference 126500LN. With its 40mm Oystersteel case, black Cerachrom bezel, triple-register chronograph, and matching Oyster bracelet, the modern Daytona is one of the best-wearing, best-looking watches on the market. Walhberg, a noted Rolex collector , has quite a few classic models from the Crown in his collection—but that hasn’t stopped him from branching out into other marques, including Patek .

Henry Golding poses in the portrait studio during the Red Sea International Film Festival 2023

Henry Golding’s Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen a 5711 in the wild—but that doesn’t diminish the singular importance of this most sought-after (discontinued) reference from Patek Philippe. Spotted on the wrist of Crazy Rich Asians heartthrob Henry Golding at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, the Nautilus luxury sports watch sprang from the mind of famed Swiss designer Gérald Genta in 1976. Famously discontinued by Patek boss Thierry Stern in 2021, the 40mm ref. 5711 was succeeded by the 41mm ref. 5811 in 2022—but that hasn’t diminished demand for the former, which start at roughly $90K on reseller Chrono24.com . Golding, a noted watch fanatic , wears it exceptionally well.

Charles Melton attends the 3rd Annual Academy Museum Gala at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Charles Melton’s Alpine Eagle Frozen

American actor Charles Melton was also present at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala alongside RDJ—but wearing a very different watch. The May December star was seen in a Chopard Alpine Eagle Frozen, a completely iced-out take on the brand’s luxury sports watch that debuted back in 2019. Powered by a chronometer-certified automatic movement, the watch is cased in 18K white gold and is positively dripping with diamonds—over seven carats’ worth, to be exact. The Alpine Eagle line, a spiritual successor to the St. Mortiz collection from the 1980s, is available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, and the brand doesn’t differentiate between men’s and women’s models on its website. Melton’s watch, measuring 36mm, is perfect for any wrist.

We've Entered the Era of the Timepiece: Trends and Watches That Will Define 2024

The Luxury List  is a monthly column on all things luxury, tapping the foremost experts in the fashion space to explore everything from craftsmanship deep dives to the little-known details to consider when buying fine jewelry.

The watch industry is traditionally a male-dominated space, but we've seen women carving out a bigger presence in it—from an expert POV and a shopping standpoint. On social media, specifically, we're seeing a new wave of experts who are educating their audiences on the world of watches and inspiring a new generation of collectors. Among them are Brynn Wallner of Dimepiece and Trang Trinh of Girls O'Clock, whose content is both educational and entertaining, making the watch world a fun, less intimidating place to enter. As Wallner puts it, "With social media, anyone can talk about it, and there's no gatekeeping. If you use the tool correctly, then you get your voice heard, and it has the power to impact the entire industry."

Wallner got her start in the watch world after she was laid off from Sotheby's in 2020 and set the tone for the new direction of women in the industry. "To me, what I was doing wasn't all that groundbreaking—it was mostly just identifying watches that celebrities wore, but with my tone and my point of view and the people that I was covering," Wallner explains. "Scary Spice to Bella Hadid to Princess Diana—all of these women with great style—and I injected my personal sense of humor into it." Trinh, too, approached the luxury watch space less traditionally. "I began Girls O'Clock with two missions: to be a resource for women who don't know where to begin in the world of watches and to amplify the dialogue on why women are interested in watches and the styles they lust after, all of which I hope I accomplish with a bit of fun!" Trinh shares. Each of their platforms has resonated in a major way and has translated to a new generation of watch enthusiasts and collectors.

Curious to know more about where the watch world is headed in 2024, I consulted Wallner and Trinh. Ahead, learn about the hot watch trends and styles to own.

"I think a lot of watch brands are adopting the small-watch trend," explains Wallner. "People in the watch world are probably so sick of hearing me talk about small watches, but when I was on the scene early on, I was like, 'Why are all of the watches gigantic?'" Wallner recalls the Y2K era when everything was oversize and 41-millimeter Rolex watches were the timepiece of choice for celebs such as model Christie Brinkley, but she notes that this is shifting in a big way.

"It's not just the ladies that like small watches—it's the guys too," Wallner shares. Kylie Jenner was spotted wearing the trend with her Panthère de Cartier at the 2023 US Open, and so was Timothée Chalamet. The actor was seen wearing the same watch courtside at a recent Lakers-Pacers game in Vegas. This may be a silhouette that was designed with women in mind, but it's setting trends across the watch space.

Another key trend to know for 2024? Cocktail watches with jewelry-like designs that are intended to be worn at nighttime and for special occasions. Trinh specifically mentions the Cartier Baignoire as a design that is primed for evenings.

This trend aligns with the  return of elegant fashion  and occasion dressing that we've been tracking on and off the runways, which is setting the tone for where fashion is headed in 2024.

The Most Coveted Watches

The Cartier Baignoire is one of the most talked-about watches in recent memory. The timepiece dates back to 1906 when it was first designed and remains one of the most in-demand watches, especially after the bangle style was introduced at Watches and Wonders in 2023. The watch comes in many iterations, but there is one style that sits at the top of Trinh's wish list: "a diamond-bezel Baignoire for that touch of glitz in the evening."

Trinh's pick aligns with the cocktail-watch trend that is picking up momentum in 2024. The timepieces are elegant, glamorous, and intended for dressed-up special occasions.

The timepiece Wallner recommends has historical significance within the watch world. "I would love a Royal Oak—an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak," Wallner tells Who What Wear. "That might be the super-basic answer, but it is the first watch I really learned about. If you know anything about the design history, it was designed by Gérald Genta, who is a legendary designer in the watch industry. When it was released in the '70s, it was a time in the watch industry when it was facing a total existential crisis because of the invention of the quartz movement." The quartz crisis—aka the introduction of battery-powered watches—at one point threatened the craft of traditional mechanical watch movements.

"All these old-school watchmakers were like, 'What are we going to do? This battery and this new piece of technology is going to turn us obsolete,'" explains Wallner. "In the face of all of this, Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak, and it was a total slap in the face to the quartz movement. It really changed the game for the watch industry during that era. It's so historically significant and just celebrated its 50th anniversary last year." Not only is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak one of the hottest timepieces on the market, but it's also steeped in the rich history of watchmaking.

Rolex is a watch brand that is equally coveted among seasoned collectors and those buying their first timepiece. The style to keep your eye on in 2024? The Rolex Yacht-Master is the sportiest style that makes it onto the 2024 list of key watches to own.

"I'm rooting for the Rolex Yacht-Master to make a comeback. I've been eyeing a two-tone one for years to achieve that 'boyfriend' look on a smaller wrist. It's cool, at a more accessible price point, and simply sexy. Case in point: Young Victoria and David Beckham wore matching yellow gold Yacht-Masters," Trinh explains. In fact, the Beckhams wore the coordinating Rolex watches for their 1998 engagement shoot, and all signs point to a resurgence of the iconic timepiece.

One of the ways that the new guard of watch experts is shifting the conversion about watches on social media is a focus on what celebrities are wearing. By simply uncovering the watch styles that stylish celebs own, they are peeling back the curtain on the watches that are in their wardrobes and educating their audience from there.

Which celebrity-owned styles are resonating with the experts themselves? "I'm currently coveting a Patek Nautilus à la Sofia Richie Grainge," Trinh shares.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

At 8:30 AM last Wednesday (Geneva time), when everyone stateside was tucked into their beds, the entire set of new Rolex novelties hit the internet. We immediately turned our focus to a certain left-sided crown GMT-Master II with a green and black bezel, and the new Air-King with crown guards and professional case. But those weren't the only releases from The Crown this year. In fact, when the HODINKEE team visited the Rolex booth (I really need to stop calling these things booths) at Watches & Wonders, one collection took us all by surprise: The Yacht-Master.

Now, I don't have a complete understanding of the personal lives of my colleagues, but I think it's fair for me to say that not one of us is a competitive yachts-person and yet nearly every one of us was jazzed to handle the new 42mm Yacht-Master in yellow gold on the Oysterflex bracelet. Yellow gold has a tendency to do that.

YG Yacht-Master

In fact, this is one of the reasons I am so happy that trade shows are back and we're able to handle watches in person and report back to you, the readers, on our observations. I think it's likely that we would have overlooked this release as nothing more than a change in metal. But to my mind, this new case material results in a Yacht-Master the way it always should have been: Flashy, but no less sporty. The yellow gold execution just feels right.

Of course, that wasn't the only news to come off the yacht. We weren't able to see it, but Rolex unveiled a new white gold variant with something called a Falcon's Eye dial which looks about as cool as anything I've seen out of the "house that Wilsdorf built" in years. I'll reserve full judgment until I see it in person, though.

Falcon's Eye Yacht-Master

Yacht-Master with Falcon's Eye dial

But there was even more yacht-watch action that had the room waiting to touch and feel (I'll never stop saying that). I'm talking about the 40mm white gold Yacht-Master with diamond-set lugs, and a rotating bezel fully set with an array of colorful sapphires.

I don't want this point to be lost on anyone. The bezel has no text, numerals, or any useful markings. It's just adorned with sapphires and yet – Rolex still made it rotate. You just have to love that. It almost bears repeating the "no sapphire left unturned" joke I made in the introductory article. Well, I guess I just repeated it anyway.

Sapphire Yacht-Master on wrist

It really is interesting that the watches you think we'd scoff at in press photos are the ones we were most excited to try on in person. The sapphire YM made its way around the table multiple times, as each of us wanted a second and third time with it on the wrist. From a size perspective, I have always loved the 40mm YM , and the colorful blingy-ness of this one really makes it a larger-than-life timepiece.

But it was the YG YM that really caught my eye. Prior to W&W, we wrote an article about Rolex watches we hoped to see this year. I chose one I knew we would never see, which was a Submariner with a Yacht-Master bezel. I just love the matte-ceramic look and feel of this bezel with the tone-on-tone raised numerals. For a model range that comes predominantly in precious metals, it is interesting to see such a utilitarian, toolish look paired with gold. This is in contrast to the steel Submariner, which utilizes a shiny Cerachrom bezel.

Yellow Gold YM on wrist

On the wrist, the 42mm version wears exactly like you would expect a 42mm watch to wear. It isn't deceptively small, or overly large – but it is big. I have a six-and-a-third-inch wrist and I am not sure I could wear this one daily. Much of that has to do with the Oysterflex bracelet – and yes it is technically a bracelet and not a strap. You see, as comfortable as it is (and it's mighty comfortable), it bows out slightly and doesn't hug the wrist as tightly as a traditional bracelet does. Unfortunately, this makes a 42mm watch wear exactly as advertised, which in my case makes the watch a tad too big (though fingers crossed for a future 37mm version).

This was a bit of a bummer for me to experience in the room because as a design object, the yellow gold Yacht-Master is a total stunner. The black dial, maxi lume plots, and the date window all work to form a well-proportioned timepiece. Of course, this is a purely aesthetic update and the watch continues to feature the Superlative Chronometer-rated 3235 caliber.

Yellow Gold Yacht-Master

I really think the entire YM collection is criminally underrated by the general watch-loving public, but I also understand that price is a factor in these things, and at $28,300 the yellow gold model isn't necessarily a bargain. Of course you can always spring for the steel model with platinum bezel in 40mm sizing, but that really feels like a different watch entirely.

Yellow Gold Yacht-Master

My high-level observations of this watch are that it's a logical addition to the Yacht-Master fray. I suspect we'll see more of these in the wild than we did the white gold model because WG is a metal that flies under the radar. If you're buying gold, you want someone to know. It has the heft you want from a solid gold watch, but it's balanced by the cushioned comfort of the Oysterflex. In a world where steel Rolex sport watches are trending around the price of this model on the secondary market, is it so crazy to spring for YG and get your name on the warranty card?

Making the case: The Rolex Yacht-Master is the most versatile collection of all their ‘Professional’ models

Making the case: The Rolex Yacht-Master is the most versatile collection of all their ‘Professional’ models

For most, the day after Christmas is Boxing Day. But, for some professional sailors, December 26 marks the beginning of the  Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the race, which was first held in 1945, and has been sponsored by Rolex since 2002, consists of yachts ranging from 30 feet (9.14 metres) to 100 feet (30.48 metres), with crews both professional and Corinthian, racing through 628-nautical miles (1,163 kilometres) of open water. It is an absolutely gruelling race in which merely completing it is a massive accomplishment. But, I am no sailor myself. So when I heard about the race, my mind immediately wandered to the Rolex Yacht-Master.

As I sat pondering the collection, I began to think about just how underrated the Yacht-Master is compared to other “Professional” Rolex references like the Submariner, Daytona, and GMT Master II. So today I want to make the case that the Yacht-Master is not only massively underrated, but also the most versatile collection of all the “Professional” models. Normally in the Making The Case  column, we present arguments for and against. But, this time around I will make my case by highlighting five Yacht-Master watches (four currently in production, and one discontinued model that is readily available on the secondary market) that, at least in my mind, show why the argument for my case is quite strong.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Yacht-Master

Previously, the Yacht-Master 42 was only available in stealthy white gold. At Watches & Wonders Geneva 2022, Rolex finally introduced not only a yellow gold Yacht-Master 42, but also the first yellow gold Yacht-Master ever outfitted on an Oysterflex rubber bracelet. Lately many manufactures have been ignoring yellow gold, sticking with rose and white gold only. This is due to the fact that, in some eyes, yellow gold is considered dated. While some say dated, I say classic. It is hard to beat the purity of yellow gold. Ultimately buyers now have the best of both worlds, you can get the Yacht-Master 42 in white gold if you want to fly under the radar or in yellow gold if being a casual “G” is your vibe. Fingers crossed though that a stainless-steel Yacht-Master 42, or even a RLX Titanium version which we have already seen a prototype of, makes its debut in 2023.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37/40 Everose Gold

Yacht-Master

But Zach, what about rose gold? What if 42mm is too big for my wrist.  Well, you are in luck. Not only is the Yacht-Master available in an Everose case, but also in 37mm and 40mm sizes. The Everose model has yet to make the jump to 42mm, but the 37mm and 40mm configurations are every bit as up to spec as the 42mm. It utilises Rolex’s latest in-house automatic 3235 calibre with 70 hours of power reserve, it is also outfitted on the super comfortable Oysterflex bracelet, it follows the same visual theme with a fully polished case and stealthy matte black ceramic timing bezel, and it has a trip-lock screw-down crown secured Oyster case that is equally pledged with a depth rating of 100 metres – but could likely survive even greater depths. So, within this format you have three precious metal options and three case diameters. And the precious meets casual nature of being outfitted on a rubber bracelet makes the aesthetic, along with its size options, highly versatile.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37/40 Oystersteel and Platinum

Yacht-Master

But Zach, precious metal is totally out of my budget.  Well, while we wait for an Oysterflex-fitted Yacht-Master to be executed in steel or titanium, you still have Oystersteel and platinum options to work with as well. Available in 37mm and 40mm, on mixed finished oyster bracelets rather than on Oysterflex, the examples above are primarily made of 904L stainless steel. The platinum comes into play with the timing bezel, the insert made entirely of platinum. The gray ruthenium dial offers a really cool monochromatic look, broken ever so slightly by the turquoise Yacht-Master text and central lollipop seconds hand. If you are a New York Giants fan, or just simply prefer a more common blue dial with a pop of red, the configuration on your right is also available to explore. Both also utilise the 3235 movement as well.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold Falcon’s Eye

Yacht-Master

Rolex is known for incremental change, and, for the most part, a sombreness befitting of their reputation for incredibly solid robust performance watches. But, in the modern era, as Rolex has skewed away from utility towards full-blown luxury, the Crown has begun to experiment a bit more. Sure, we have crazy pave dials, ombre dials, and rainbow Daytonas. But, the quietly released Yacht-Master 42 with a “Falcon’s Eye” dial shows just how strong their dial-manufacturing capabilities are. Many jested Rolex stole a page out of Grand Seiko’s playbook, with nature-inspired palm tree-motif dials on the Datejust. But this “Falcon’s Eye” dial is much more apt example of how Rolex can transform natural elements into an astoundingly cool looking dial. So, for those that need something out of the box, the Yacht-Master 42 is capable of such thrills as well.

Rolex Yacht-Master 35 ref. 168622 with platinum dial

rolex yacht master celebrity

While discontinued, older 29mm, 31mm, and 35mm Yacht-Master watches are also available for purchase as well – and for less than the retail pricing of a current 37mm model in Oystersteel and platinum. This means you have five size options on the table. To explore references like the Daytona and Submariner in their discontinued smaller sizes would require a large-budget worthy of bidding against serious collectors at auction houses like Phillips. A particular Yacht-Master favourite of mine is the ref. 168622 with a platinum dial. Yes, you read that right, the entire dial is made of solid frosted platinum. While the case and bracelet may be steel, the bezel and dial are full-platinum – very stealthy precious metal thrills. I also cannot recall another Rolex dial that utilises a frosted finish. Quite neat.

My closing statement

Yacht-Master

So, with six size options that can be explored, and a wide aesthetic range, the Rolex Yacht-Master offers the most versatility within the pantheon of Rolex “Professional” models. Prove me wrong.

OYSTER PERPETUAL YACHT-MASTER 42

rolex yacht master celebrity

MASTERING LIGHTNESS

Light and robust, the new Yacht-Master 42, in RLX titanium, is the ally of those who revel in freedom. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it delivers exceptional performance.

Rolex is presenting a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. This nautical watch is introduced for the first time in RLX titanium – a particularly strong but lightweight alloy – and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. The new version stands out for its technical satin finish – a satin finish with a visible grain, a feature of Rolex watches in RLX titanium – which extends to the middle case sides, the edges of the bracelet links and the sides of the clasp cover. The chamfered top edges of the middle case lugs have a high-sheen finish, while the crown guard is polished. With its bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic featuring raised and polished numerals and graduations, the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium remains faithful to the aesthetics of the original model, unveiled in 2019. It is graced with an intense black dial in a fine satin finish, and its Oyster bracelet is equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link. The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date as well as the hours, minutes and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

THE CALL OF THE OPEN SEAS Launched in 1992, the Yacht-Master was designed specifically for navigators and skippers. Embodying the rich heritage that has bound Rolex and the world of sailing since the 1950s, this Professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style, making it equally at home on and off the water. An emblematic nautical timepiece, it is easily recognized by its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic.

RLX TITANIUM  RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts. Not only are these materials virtually scratchproof, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. Rolex has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components. On the new version of the Yacht-Master 42, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic. Its raised graduations and numerals are first moulded into the ceramic and then polished. The first 15 minutes are graduated minute-by-minute to allow time intervals to be read with great precision. The bezel can also be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge, which offers excellent grip.

OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS  A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 42 mm Oyster case of the new Yacht-Master 42 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of RLX titanium. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3235  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since its launch in 2019. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.   Calibre 3235 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours.

OYSTER BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42, made from RLX titanium, is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness. The Oyster bracelet of this new version of the Yacht-Master 42 features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The Oyster bracelet in RLX titanium also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 — ©Rolex/Ulysse Frechelin

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
