Powerboats: Powerboat Festival at Bugibba

malta powerboat association

The Malta Powerboats Association, in collaboration with the St. Paul’s Bay Council and the Royal Yachting Association (UK), is organising their first event of the Championship 2011 calendar. This will be held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th March and is being presented under the title of Powerboat Festival.

Competing boats are to be divided under three groups namely the 150hp-200hp Class, the 225hp-250hp Class and the Open class with boats between the 300hp-500hp ranges. There will also be a class for Cybers.

The Powerboat Festival is being staged in Bugibba with the Race Committee operating from the Bugibba jetty. On Saturday the racing programme will be from 9 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon while on Sunday this will be from 9.00 a.m. till 6.00 p.m. The podium presentation will be held on Sunday after 6.00 p.m. at the Angelo’s Lido in Bugibba.

The schedule for the weekend event runs as follows. Scrutinising of boats starts at eight in the morning, to be followed by signing-in, security and drivers’ briefing to be followed by a practice session.

On Saturday there will be two races, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, for each class. These will be held in the following approximate time:

The 150hp-200hp Circuit will run at 10.30 a.m. and at 13.45 p.m.; the 225hp-250hp Circuit will run at 11.15 a.m. and at 14.30 p.m., the Open class 300hp-500hp class will run at 12.00 noon and at 16.30 p.m. With regards to the Cybers races these will be held at 12.45 p.m. and 15.45 p.m.

On Sunday the programme will also be made up of two races for each class.

The 150hp-200hp Circuit will run at 11.00 a.m. and at 15.00 p.m.; the 225hp-250hp Circuit will run at 12.00 a.m. and at 15.45 p.m., the Open class 300hp-500hp class will run at 13.30 p.m. and at 17.15 p.m. The Cybers will race at 12.45 p.m. and 16.30 p.m.

Powerboats racing have proved a popular spectator sport every time such events are held in Maltese waters. “We are pleased to collaborate in such a manifestation where the Bugibba Promenade is expected to provide a grand stand overlooking the pit area and the race course”, remarked Architect Graziella Galea, mayor of St. Paul’s Bay.

Another attraction on this weekend will be a display stand where spectators could view at close range the various types of boats that are racing. This stand will be located in the area between the Bugibba Bocci Club and Angelo’s Lido.

Three RYA (Royal Yachting Association) officials, Steve Oaten, Denise Monteith and John Puddifoot, the current RYA (UK) President will be attending the weekend Festival.

This first event of the local 2011 Championship is being contested by the most experienced drivers and co-drivers on the Maltese powerboat circuit. A major attraction will undoubtedly be Aaron Ciantar the P1 World Champion who is also a Training Officer of the Malta Powerboat Association. In his role as Training Officer Ciantar guides with proficient training and skilled technical assistance the new drivers who are always coming into the powerboat racing sport and helps to give them confidence and aptitude.

“The MPA has gone from strength to strength since it was set up in 2008. We have held races in various localities in Malta and on all occasions crowds were plentiful. Yes, we expect a highly contested weekend which should provide an appealing spectacle”, observed Aaron Ciantar.

Further to the Bugibba Festival the Malta Powerboat Association plans three other events for their 2011 Championship calendar. These are scheduled for May 7th-8th (Marsascala), September 10th-11th (St Paul’s Bay), and November 19th-20th (venue to be verified).

Fewer things in life get the adrenaline flowing like blasting along with your backside scraping ‘the surface’ with a hugely powerful engine roaring at your rear. Some people might do this in a car when the surface in question is smooth uniform tarmac. Pah! That’s for big girls! Those with serious balls do it in a boat when said surface is uneven water or could be downright choppy!

Blasting along going stupid fast in a vehicle becomes much more ‘interesting’ when you start bouncing around on the sea, or get thrown into the air by a monster wave, or cross the wake left by a fellow driver. This happens a lot in powerboat racing and powerboat racing happens a lot in Malta.

The crystalline blue seas make for an ideal and usually fairly smooth race circuit for these immensely high-powered, turbo-charged, bullet shaped boats to churn around. There are several minor races held on the island’s shores but the undoubted highlight of the island’s boating year has to be the Maltese Grand Prix of the Sea – one of the fixtures in the Powerboat P1 calendar.

Racing starts in the spring and is launches in the Grand Harbour of Valletta . If you head down there you’ll be free to admire the powerboats up close and personal in their full glory. It’s a two-day event and throughout this time the boats cut a swathe through the blue waves in races called the Super Sport Class Sprint and the Super Sport Class Endurance.

The racing is followed up with various evening activities that range from performances by live bands, activities for kids, night parties, and podium presentations for the winners.

Large crowds of local islanders and tourists flock to the waterfront to catch a glimpse of this spectacular event. The programme also includes the traditional ‘round the island’ race, which, as the name implies, you can see from anywhere around the coast.

With the regular technological developments being made in what is still a relatively new sport, it’s not unusual to see history being made as world records are smashed out of sight by the new state-of-the-art craft. The speeds at which they travel have to be seen to be believed and can reach upwards of 250kmh or 150mph.

The Maltese Grand Prix of the Sea is a continuation of a series of Grand Prix races that take place around the world. The drivers combat blinding speed, deafening engine noise and sometimes challenging sea conditions as they hurtle about just a few metres away from each other.

It’s a true feat of engineering, skill and trust in fellow competitors, which takes on an extra special aspect when you place it against a backdrop like the Grand Harbour of Valletta.

Aside from the island’s ‘Blue Riband’ event, the Malta Powerboat Association stages a full programme of racing each year with meetings taking place each month from March to September. You can see a full programme by checking out the MPA website using the link below.

Yachting Malta Race Week kicks off on Saturday

The event will host a selection of keelboat, dinghy, and powerboat races

Yachting Malta has announced that the second edition of the Yachting Malta Race Week will commence on Saturday 21st May and will conclude on Sunday 29th May.

malta powerboat association

The Yachting Malta Race Week is an initiative launched in 2021 and promises to showcase some of Malta’s existing talent and promising athletes as they compete in their respective sport. Throughout its duration, events will include dinghy, keelboat, one-design class sailing as well as powerboats.

The sailing races and regattas taking place will be hosted by Yachting Malta, the Royal Malta Yacht Club, and the SB20 Association Malta and held under the auspices of the Malta Sailing Federation. Voomquest Enemed races are authorised by the Malta Powerboat Federation, under the auspices of the Union International Motonautique (UIM).

The first activities will be held this weekend at the Royal Malta Yacht Club and will welcome sailors from all local sailing schools who will be taking part in the National Ranking Regatta for Optimist and ILCA Classes. Racing is scheduled to take place off the Sliema foreshore, between Marsamxett Harbour and Dragonara point. Concurrently with the Dinghy Ranking Regatta, the SB20 Association Malta will also be hosting a two-day regatta between Fortizza and St. George’s Shoals.

The Voomquest Enemed UIM World Championships will see the second Grand Prix of the 2022 season take place along the Sliema seafront from the 27th until the 29th May. The V2 powerboats will be racing in the afternoon, whilst the Cyber Classes will be racing in the afternoon just after the V2 races. Racing for the Cyber Classes will take place in the Grand Harbour. Races will be close to shore, making it easy for spectators to enjoy the action.

On Friday afternoon,  the Veuve Clicquot Round Linosa offshore race will take place, starting just outside the Grand Harbour. The 180 nautical mile race is officially recognised by the IRC Records office. Last year’s record (correct time) of 1 day, 12 hours, 39 minutes, and 49 seconds was registered by Aaron Gatt Floridia’s Otra Vez.

“We are very excited to see the Yachting Malta Race Week happening again. Whilst last year’s event was relatively diluted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year promises to be a bigger event, with more activities being showcased.”  remarked John Huber, Yachting Malta Chairman.

Comino Blue Lagoon

Comino is a beautiful island sitting between Malta and Gozo. It is renowned for its crystal clear waters, hence the name of its most famous bay – the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is also referred to as the Crystal Lagoon due to its crystal clear light blue waters.

Apart from Comino Hotel, there is only one single family living permanently on the island. Comino has become a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world, particularly cherished for its peace and tranquillity.

St Mary’s Tower is the most visible structure on the island. It dates back to 1416, when the Maltese petitioned their King to build a tower on Comino to serve as an early warning system in case of invasion. At the time they wanted to deter marauding Turks, pirates, smugglers and corsairs from using Comino as a hiding place and staging ground for devastating sorties onto the sister islands of Malta and Gozo.

Chaudron Power Boats

Our Power Boats are custom built by the famous Chaudron boat company, a company established in Malta in 1988 which today is the undisputed top boat-building company in Malta. Among the many prestigious awards won by Chaudron is the SuperSport Championship, which it won for three years in a row: in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Our power-boats are 33 feet long with twin Yamaha 300hp engines and can take over 20 people. Safety is our top priority, and our boats are built with all necessary safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe boating experience.

Chaudron started competing in the Powerboat P1 championship in 2004 with the debut race in home seas.

Chaudron were allowed to compete after being given a wildcard and after the experience the team planned on entering the SuperSport championship with the main aim of securing the world title – an ambition achieved in 2007 and 2008.

Bowlers return at revamped SuperBowl

Eden Group CEO De Cesare hopeful of a more constructive relationship with MBA

Malta Bowling Association bowlers were back training at a revamped Eden Superbowl last week as the popular venue reopened after a few months of renovations works.

The Eden Superbowl has for over four decades provided Maltese bowlers with a high-level playing venue where they could nurture their talent and go on and win several medals for our country in the sport of bowling.

When the news broke out last December that the Eden Superbowl was set to close down its doors for a few months due to work that has to be carried out to revamp the facility, it naturally shocked the Maltese bowling community who were losing the only proper bowling alley on the island.

However, looking at the new facilities installed at the Eden Superbowl, local bowlers will feel that enforced break was somewhat worthwhile given that they will be able to use the latest technology in the sport.

Eden Leisure Group CEO Simon De Cesare told the Times of Malta that the venue provides a new state of the art technology for Maltese bowlers and is hopeful that more youngsters are attracted to the sport.

“The previous centre was installed back in 1988 and since then bowling technology has made giant strides forward,” he said.

“The new centre offers brand new state of the art technology both in scoring and reliability of the machines. At the end of the day, I am confident that bowlers will not notice a significant difference in the sport itself but will be able to enjoy their sport in a more enjoyable and pleasing atmosphere.

“The latest technology includes the introduction of string pin machines which are prevalent in most markets now. This system has been approved by all major bowling federations in all areas of the worlds after going through vigorous testing.

“The tests clearly show that there are very little differences in the game and scores of the players so there should be minimal getting use to.

malta powerboat association

“At the end of the day what we have created at the Eden is far more than just bowling. We believe it will attract all people to visit and try out bowling which is how we have tried to grow the sports grass roots. Youngsters need to be attracted to try as leisure before they can love it and take it up as a sport.”

De Cesare said that he was pleased to have Malta Bowling Association bowlers back at the venue and said that his company remain committed to promoting and supporting the sport at the SuperBowl.

“We have been supporting the Malta Bowling Association for more than three decades now,” De Cesare said.

“The SuperBowl has supported the sport from the 80s to today and we will continue to do so. It is a fine balancing act between sport bowler and leisure bowlers.

“The needs of sport bowlers are significantly more than leisure bowlers but we remain committed to promoting and supporting the sport at the SuperBowl.

“We invited the Bowling Association last week before opening for a taster of what to come and the feedback was very positive. There are a couple of minor teething problems but that’s the point of such pre-opening events.”

In the aftermath of the Eden Leisure’s decision to close the doors of the SuperBowl for a few months relationships between the company and the local governing body were a bit strained. But De Cesare is looking forward to a more constructive relationship with the Malta Bowling Association in the future.

“I am indeed hopeful of having a more constructive relationship with the Malta Bowling Association,” De Cesare said.

“Maybe the hiatus of five months without a centre will make us all realise what we actually have from a centre that costs bowlers nothing to run, to a group of committed individuals wishing to compete and play frequently.

“Hopefully we all can see the benefit of each other and find ways in which we can be mutually beneficial rather than one way benefit.”
