Knysna 500 SE

knysna500se3

Description

The Knysna 500 SE is a pretty, sporty looking 50 foot cruising catamaran built by the Knysna Yacht Company in South Africa. This boat has plenty of fans thanks to her build quality, looks and value for money. The yard completes around 4 yachts per year and they are focused on getting the details right.

She´s around the same length as the ITA 14.99 but more orientated towards comfort rather than performance, but with a higher finish than the volume manufacturers like Fountaine Pajot , Lagoon and Leopard.

Let´s take a look.

She looks fantastic with those sleek lines and in common with most boats that launch in South Africa – she´s built for comfortable long distance cruising. The single bulkhead starboard helm is well protected by a hard top bimini with a window up top for better sail visibility and it´s spacious. All four corners of the boat are visible from your perch. She does look low in the water compared to some other boats in her class, so I would need to dig into any bridgedeck slamming issues. This doesn´t seem to come up as an issue with existing owners, so I am guessing that they have sculpted the undersides to minimise this.

The boom is nice and low on the coachroof, so that mainsail is easy to get to and the power from the sail is kept low.

All the lines run back to winches at the helm meaning that this yacht is well set up for short handed or even single handed sailing, and the whole running rigging plan is very neat with bags to stow your lines and other tidy features. If the weather turns nasty, just roll down the clear enclosure and you should be pretty snug up here.

Of course the flip side of that is that you cannot quickly nip up front if you need to, you need to step down and around.

Moving forward, the Knysna 500 SE has nice wide decks and she feels safe to move about on in a seaway, although it would have been nice to see flush hatches.

The Knysna 500 SE comes fully loaded with all sorts of features as standard: air conditioning, TV system, ice maker, Permatek decking in the cockpit, watermaker, generator and so on – she represents great value for money if you are looking for the complete cruising package. When you compare it to other cruising cats (read our Lagoon 450F review for example), you get a lot for your money.

The Knysna 500 comes with a 75 m2 (800 sq ft) mainsail and a 50 m2 (538 sq ft) genoa which powers her 13.5 tonnes along nicely. When the wind dies, you can fire up 2 x54 hp engines to move you efficiently through the chop.

This yacht has plenty of sail area and for calmer conditions there is a screecher on a furler on the bowsprit which is good to go. She´s no slouch.

The main drops easily and you can sail with the screecher and the genoa wing on wing if you are heading downwind in lighter winds..

knysna catamaran

We really like some of the features in the aft cockpit – they´re pretty unique to this boat. There´s a swim platform in between the aft bench and the davits that makes it easy to manoeuvre the dinghy at anchor.

No South African boat would be complete without a decent barbeque to cook up up a braai, and this is neatly positioned on the starboard side of the swimming platform with plenty of space to cook away from the hustle and bustle. There´s even a little aft facing seat here just in case you need to take a break from the cooking with a cold beer. Very nice!

If you like reeling in the tuna, then you will also appreciate the other aft facing seat and filleting table on the port side: all great touches. The teak dining table is nestled in front of the aft sofa bench (which can lower as an option to make a day bed) that runs along the transom and there are two additional lounging spots on either side.

Saloon and Down Below

knysna catamaran

What really sets the Knysna 500 SE catamaran apart from the competition is the quality of the furnishings and finish once you head inside the boat. You can tell that this is a semi-custom boat and she looks like she will age graciously.

All the cabinetry, catches and general carpentry on this yacht are well above the quality that you will see on production boats.

The saloon is really cosy with a curved sofa forward and there are some custom options available to organise this area.

On the boats we have seen, the U-shaped galley is on the starboard side. You can then either go for a nav station or storage forward of the galley (not everyone goes the nav station as the helm is so well protected). Ventilation is fine, although we would have liked to have seen larger forward facing hatches in the saloon- the space is limited by the molded steps from the fore-deck to the coach roof I guess.

There are 2 decent sized hatches in the roof of the saloon.

Down below, the quality feel continues. If you have gone for an owner´s version, you will have the guest accommodation in the starboard hull. This is a very neat design with a cosy raised berth amidships forward and a head beyond that. Knysna have really done a great job on the storage space – they´ve used all of the available space very well and you´re spoilt for choice in the hulls.

There is another guest cabin aft which is laid out more conventionally with its own head and shower room. I love the way that the shower has it´s own screen.

As you would expect, the master suite is even more spacious. There is lots of storage and I like the side windows by the berth that look out onto the sea.

There´s space for a vanity area or office space just forward of the cabin and a big show room with separate head forward, again with plenty of area for stowage.

If you compare the Knysna 500 SE to production boats of a similar size, you´ll be struck at the difference in quality of the finish from this yard. If you are looking to cover the miles quickly in a very comfortable boat, this should be on your shopping list.

This feels like it has been pitched at a similar comfort/performance balance as a Nautitech but with a higher quality finish and with a more protected helm. She represents excellent value for money: I love all the little touches and the clever design for storage.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Guided Tour of a Knysna 500SE Catamaran by Cruising Off Duty

We took Cruising Off Duty on a special guided tour of the Knysna 500 at the Annapolis Boat Show, which we’ve detailed here below.

Or you can watch their tour & review here:

We’ve been building for 18 years and only build 4 boats a year. We focus on sleekness throughout the boat, for example, the slanted windows, for a “supercar” type look. We strive to be different and stand out, which results in a “where is that boat from?” kind of expression from people.

cruising off duty knysna

The cockpit is probably the space you spend most of your time onboard. It includes a nice, large, wooden table to eat at, which can easily seat 8 people. A nice solid roof over the top of the table protects the area from sun & rain. The sides of the seating area can close up during bad weather.

Outdoor roof speakers contribute to the features of the cockpit. The tender doesn’t hang but rather sits safely on blocks. The BBQ sits in a good location towards the back end of the deck. There is room behind the seating to work on the tender or cross the boat. A folding swim ladder is used for swimming & getting in & out of the water.

Flexiteek flooring is standard on the boats & provides a nice, soft surface to walk on . Flexiteek is cooler on the feet & easier to maintain than standard fibreglass flooring.

More features of the cockpit include a cooler under some cushioned seating and an ice maker under a small bar area.

The Helmspostion / mole hole is a very important part of the boat. It boasts great visual. Many cats are too tall out front to see both bows, but you can see both bows from the seat as well as the sugar scoops which is important when backing up. The Knysna 500SE can be sailed by just 2 people. Electric winches and an electric furler also contribute towards easy sailing. You can, of course, control the anchor from the helm position, as well pick up the dinghy & fly screecher with the push of a button. The helms position has 2 closures for bad weather. The Garmin instruments are standard and high-tech.

Interior: Saloon & Galley

The Knysna 500SE is a semi-custom yacht, which means the owner gets to choose a lot of what happens in the interior spaces, for example, the wood colours, upholstery and galley layout.

There are no moulds in the boat and lots of effort goes into keeping the boat as light as possible. Galley counters and cupboards are built from 10mm AIREX foam & covered with the wood of choice (vinyl). A lot of solid wood is used too, for example, oak, which is shown off nicely on the finishings and trimmings.

A small dishwasher lies below counter space with cupboards for mugs and glasses. Holes are cut according to the customers’ mugs & glasses for perfect fitting inside the cupboards. A twin wash-up & drying area is available along with a rubbish bin easily accessible from the top of the counter as well as the back of the counter facing the saloon side. A microwave, convection oven & induction hob make for easy cooking, which again is all part of the clients’ reference and can be changed.

A nice, large seating area is the centre focus of the saloon. The table drops down and seating area becomes a large bed if it’s needed. A TV set accompanies the area for pleasure & navigation. A fridge/freezer combo s included and there is storage space all around the galley.

This boat is a 3-cabin boat (there is a 2-cabin option). There are 2 double en-suite cabins on the starboard side & the portside is dedicated to the owner.

On your way to the starboard cabins you pass the electrical panel which is done in-house by our electrician who has been working with us for 16 years. Everything is numbered & in the owner’s manual for easy troubleshooting.

There is ample headspace in the cabin area. The first cabin’s bed is quite tall and sits on top of the bridge deck as opposed to in the holes of the bridge deck like many other cats have. A perfectly positioned window allows for a view from the bed.

There are NO liners on the boat. What you see (the “walls”) is the initial skeleton of the boat. It is kept exposed so that any stress on the boat is easily seen and not hidden from view by panels. Panels also add to the weight of the boat.

Solid wood trimmings and finishes on the steps leading to bed & storage areas are part of the clients choice, too. Hidden LED lighting gives the cabin a really nice, glowy feel at night. The first cabin’s bathroom is roomy with a spacious shower for 2. An escape hatch inside the shower doubles as a beautiful view of the water as well as ventilation. A shower skylight also provides light & ventilation.

The second cabin is smaller but spacious and comfortable still, also being the smoothest place on the boat. Slanted windows provide light and amazing views from the bed. Lattice wood closets and cupboards are used in the cabins, allowing the cupboards to breathe more, along with giving them a stunning look.

The second guest cabin’s shower is also slightly smaller but again, still spacious. Bathroom surfaces are also customizable by the owner. The bathrooms are also equipped with LED lighting and electric toilets with fresh-water flushing.

The stairs back to the galley flow freely and are not steep which works well in choppy seas.

Master-Suite / Owner’s Side

A useful desk/study area is seen as you descend the steps to the portside cabin. This is another one of the client’s choices and the space can be used for something else. There are many storage cupboards above and beside the study area.

The door to the stairs closes off the master-suite to provide privacy. The area is air-conditioned. Towards the bed is lovely seating for some quiet time away from the upstairs areas. Like the other cabins, there is ample lattice storage space.

A television is placed above the bed for your enjoyment and can also be used to check on navigation. A skylight above the bed allows for light & ventilation.

A nice, spacious passage runs between the main bed and the en-suite bathroom. This passage provides more desk space as well as a vanity area and mirrors with hairdryer plugs against the wall.

A large mirror doubles as a door leading to the equipment room. This includes a Panda generator & water maker. The water maker comes standard with the boat and produces 100 litres of water per hour. Behind another door on the right are the lithium-ion batteries which are also the standard house batteries.

The cost of this Knysna 500SE is $895 000 USD. This includes the generator, water maker, furler, tender, lithium-ion batteries, air-conditioning, screecher and washer & dryer. Nothing needs to be added and it’s ready to go as is.

The master cabin’s bathroom is big and spacious like the first cabin’s, and includes a washer & dryer.

Steps with safety gripping bars leading up to the deck & roof. The deck is wide and flat and there is no ducking to get there.

There are 2 options to access the roof: a step on the side or steps from the front. The roof is easily accessible and easily workable. Solar panels lay on the roof. 800 watts of solar is standard.

The mast is 18 meters (59’) off the deck, which is 21 meters (69’) above the water. Shorter masts are offered for those that will be cruising up & down the ICW & need to go under bridges. The main sail is 75 meters squared (800ft squared).

The fuel tank is easily accessible on the deck and provides storage for extra fuel cans. The fuel tank is 600 litres.

The water tank is also accessible right beside the fuel tank and is also 600 litres (158 US gallons).

The previously mentioned battery and generator inside, along with the fuel & water tanks are all kept in the middle area of the boat to avoid porpoising & uneven weight distribution.

The Knysna 500SE is pretty quick for a 50ft “non-racing” boat and runs comfortably at 11-13 knots. She weighs 13.5 tons. The AIREX foam and lack of using moulds contributes to the lightness of the cat. A light boat is safer and sails smoother.

Below are the PROS & CONS from Cruising Off Duty: There’s a lot to like!

  • The ladder off the back looked too small and narrow to carry heavy weight + scuba equipment
  • There is no hard dodger screen at the helms position, although has roll-down closure
  • Would like hard life-lines around the walkways instead of wire

Thank you to Cruising Off Duty for such a great review, and we’re certainly pleased with your list of PROs!

Elegance that’s more than skin deep...

The state-of-the-art technologies that go into each Vision 444 goes a lot deeper than their stately, head-turning, modern styling. Extensive research and testing combined with the latest composite engineering makes the Vision 444 catamarans as safe, modern, mobile, technologically advanced and as cutting edge as you can get.

The result is a blue water sailing catamaran that’s incredibly strong, sails efficiently, is spacious and forgiving – with the kind of all-round abilities, appeal, level of finish and attention to detail that you would never expect from a catamaran in this size and class.

2020 Vision 444

knysna catamaran

There is an unmistakable feeling of certainty one gets from owning a Vision 444.

Certainty that it will keep its good looks, sailing appeal and investment value for decades. And certainty that you made the right choice.

The Vision 444 delivers assertive results in all categories – Performance, Safety, Styling and Ergonomics – making it one of the surest, most principled and intelligent choices in a modern catamaran.

And one that offers the highest levels of owner satisfaction.

Inspired by unlimited freedom

Whether you’re choosing a Vision 444 for your own use, or whether you intend to use it for charters; you can rest assured that your catamaran will give you decades of carefree leisure and pleasure. The performance it delivers and level of creature comforts you’ll experience exceed expectations and accepted standards.

The advanced composite engineering ensures strength, performance and weight-saving.

Premium components that work seamlessly with each other have been selected to deliver both a superbly tuned catamaran and an intuitive, user-friendly environment.

The helm design affords the skipper an elevated vantage point of the entire deck and sails which makes docking that much easier.

Built by Sailors for Sailors

The Vision 444 has been built by sailors for sailors and there are key elements on the Vision 444 to be highlighted:

All the decks are level and clear of ropes, giving you the confidence to move around safely.

The mainsheet bridle system is easy and safe to use in conjunction with the self tacking jib.

The balance between the main and jib sails are perfect.

The rudders are calibrated to work in conjunction with sails meaning there is no stalling in tacks or general turning. The Vision 444 can get through a tack with hardly any speed loss.

A unique access door system in the cockpit gunwale allows easy access from the dock to board the Vision 444, and it also makes it easy to replenish from a tender.

The Vision 444 has a dedicated locker system in the port and starboard hulls. Large, easily accessible storage allows you to open one door to access all your through-hull fittings and pumps, in one contained area.

The engine rooms are easy to access. Lift up the lid (with the mattress) like a car bonnet and pull out the locking lever-stay to secure. There is a dedicated seat to sit on when working on the engine and dedicated tools in each engine room which makes servicing a pleasure.

The Vision 444 navigation station faces forward which is a great feature when making passage. Sitting in this area you get a clear view looking forward, so when you’re filling in logs you can still keep an eye on the ocean.

The unbelievably spacious cockpit has numerous large lockers that can store cockpit cushions, fishing rods and even short surfboards.

The diesel engines and the generator can easily be removed through the hatches and locker lids. This is a huge benefit if a problem occurs. Engines can be removed without disassembling the vessel.

Everything on hand

The considered design and manufacturing expertise of the Vision 444’s sporty and sleek exterior permeates to the interior, where efficient use of space has been optimized.

Each and every counter, unit, fixture and fitting has been masterly crafted, and the generous saloon, cabins, galley and cockpit echo unmistakable quality. The interior of the Vision 444 has been styled to match the new age aesthetic of the exterior.

Designed to have everything you need ‘at hand’ the layout is one of the most accessible and durable living spaces to date: there is nothing gimmicky here, and there are no loose components, only quality installations that will stand the test of time.

Our luxurious living philosophy extends to the outdoors allowing the opportunity to relax and socialize, or sunbathe in the wind-protected area of the cockpit.

Motor, Performance and Power options

In building the Vision 444 we have selected the optimum components which work seamlessly with each other, delivering both a superbly tuned catamaran yacht and an intuitive and user-friendly environment. It is this insight into what makes a perfect yacht, that makes the Vision 444 so much more than the sum of its parts.

The Vision 444 has the ideal weight-distributed engine placement (beneath the aft cabins), which allows for easier access, more space to work and ample lighting while performing maintenance or repairs at sea. Additionally, the engine position is much safer as there is no chance of it being swept overboard or the engine compartment being swamped by a wave. Even its electrical system is innovative.

The Vision 444 has a state-of-the-art 24v DC system which is as easy to maintain as it is to understand. The lightweight installation has convenient access points throughout the yacht which enables you to identify the source of any electrical problem, in the unlikely event you ever have one. The system is simple and effective, and you don’t need an electrical degree to keep it in perfect order.

Composite Strength

A sense of certainty in any sailing vessel begins with strength. We use an innovative resin infusion and gel-coat technology to form the Vision 444’s durable hulls. Decks are extra-tough while still maintaining impressive performance due to the weight-saving process.

The result is a better, lighter, faster, stronger and safer vessel which will hold its investment value longer.

  • The process allows for a much stronger and lighter boat that improves performance.
  • Optimisation of resin and fibres in the laminate structure increase strength.
  • A highly controlled resin infusion process resulting in a mono-structure, means there is no temperature variation during the construction of the components, so every square inch of the hull is as strong and durable as the next.
  • Powerful vacuums during the infusion processes reduce the ambient moisture in the forming process, creating integrity and quality that allows the sandwich composite construction to bond perfectly.
  • The gel-coat is sprayed on and as a result can be applied in uniformity, giving a superb even finish creating the perfect platform for the processes that follow.
  • Our closed environment methodology eliminates operator error.
  • The resin infusion process sets stronger, far lighter and is longer lasting.
  • The speed and precision of the process allows us to build yachts faster, which in turn results in a significantly shorter time between ordering and delivery.
