Interlake is a 18 ′ 0 ″ / 5.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Francis Sweisguth and built by Customflex starting in 1933.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Interlake was commissioned by the Sandusky Sailing Club in 1933. Francis Sweisguth, who had already designed the STAR, was hired to develop a boat for the waters of Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. Spinnaker area: 200 sq. ft. Still an active class in the mid west USA.

Interlake 18' for first sailboat?

  • Add to quote

Want to learn to sail. Found a cheap interlake. Is this a good enough boat for the wife and I to learn to sail on?

Jeff_H

I have never sailed an Interlake myself. They have always struck me as a sensible design, and one that should be an excellent design to learn on. There is still an active Interlake One-design racing class and so used sails and hardware may be available. There is a webpage where you can turn for advice that is specific to the boat. On the down side, they are not self-rescuing, meaning that they can capsize and if they capsize, they do not have a self-bailing cockpit and so you will need a rescue boat to help get back to shore. The class rules require floatation bags or other methods of keeping the boat afloat, so it won't sink. Another show coming is that these boats typically do not have a way to mount on outboard and as a new sailor there may be times when you will want to simply motor home. Other than that, I don't have any useful information. Jeff

Arcb

I haven't sailed the Interlake, but I've sailed similar boats. They're a bit unique because they are neither self rescuing nor self righting. Which means it's up to you the operator to ensure they always stay upright, and bouyant (not full of water). Staying upright will probably be fairly straightforward most of the time, but I am not sure it would be the best choice for brand new sailors. Certainly not the worst, but you might want to be extra cautious with it. If you went a little smaller like a CL16 you would at least be able to right it if you dumped.

Masthead float of some sort so it can't go mast down and stuff flotation in any void you can. Without those I wouldn't use it as a beginner boat because a beginner WILL lay it over on its side. This is one reason they use Sunfish, Lasers and such for beginners. The hulls are pretty well sealed, so its not going to sink without breaking the hull. Cockpits on these are self bailing and one person (appx 100 lbs or more) can get it back upright even if its fully inverted.

They are good boats and the newer ones are self rescuing. An older boat would require a bow tank and under seat tanks to be self rescuing. There are very active fleets and help is just an e-mail away. Nationals are in Lorain Ohio this week, stop in if you are in the area.

I know only what I see in the pictures. You may want to consider these: 1) It looks like some Interlake 18s are sit-on-top rather than sit-in boats. That configuration makes it difficult to relax. 2) It looks like some Interlake 18s do have benches, but they look narrow and the backrests look short. 3) It appears that Interlake 18s do not have ballasted keels. This will require hiking out, with your butts hanging outside the gunwale. This may or may not be the type of sailing experience you are looking for. Don't buy without talking to your wife. She might hate it. I know I would.

I have owned an Interlake and loved it. They are stable and easy to handle. Mine had foam under the seats and self bailers. I would buy another (and may) but would also consider a Flying Scot or an O'Day DaySailer.

From the class association: The Interlake is one of those “best kept secrets.”  Many sailors are not familiar with the design.  It has to do with approach.  The class has been strong since day one.  There simply has never been a huge marketing blitz.  The class just never wanted to be part of the international scene.  The goal has always been to be a Midwest regional class and to promote high level competition in a friendly atmosphere.  Members not only value the feel and performance of the boat, as well as the competition, but also enjoy the festivities which surround the events.  This philosophy has served the class well for over seventy years.  Not only has the class remained active and healthy, but members have competed well in the prestigious U.S.S.A. Champion of Champions Regatta, and served on U.S. Sailing’s Executive Committee.

The Interlake was commissioned by the Sandusky Sailing Club in 1933.  Francis Sweisguth, who had already designed the Star, was hired to develop a boat for the waters of Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay.  The craft was to be tactical with a good turn of speed, raced by two to three people and also accommodate four or more adults for a comfortable day sail.  It needed to be easily trailerable and easy to sail.  The result was the Interlake.  (It also singlehands very well).

When examining the Interlake the graceful similarities with the Star’s lines are immediately noticeable.  This accounts for the incredible feel.  Further investigation reveals a sail plan that is simple to rig, simple to sail, and full of performance.  In fact, today’s hottest new designs (the expensive sport boats) have rigs remarkably similar to the Interlake’s.  Details such as:  a large roachy main, smaller 110% jib, fractional rigging, and no backstay are similarities to both designs.  This simple rigging not only produces turnkey speed, but also makes trailering a breeze.  The Interlake is also built to last.  Twenty plus year old boats still win the Nationals.  They just keep going and going . . .

Generations and Genders    When sailing an Interlake you can expect a dry ride (in most conditions), good upwind ability, smooth planing off the wind, and good speed at deep sailing angles.  Acceleration is good, better than with most similar dingy classes (such as the Lightning or Flying Scot), and maneuverability is exceptional.  The helm is light and responsive, immediately telling the skipper what to do.  If the skipper doesn’t listen, the boat simply goes a little slower . . . it won’t break anything or throw the crew in the drink (like a Laser might!).  All the basic controls are there to adjust the sails to the conditions.  Then just trim and go.  The straight ahead nature allows performance at peak level without a lot of tweaking.  Not only is it fun to go fast, but this makes the Interlake an extremely tactical boat.

The only way to truly understand that this is just part of the story is to take a ride.  Yet the best part of the class is not the boat, but the sailors.  Sailors who cheerfully share their knowledge because they enjoy close competition.  Sailors who keep the good times going off the water as well.  The Interlake and the company it keeps are, well, . . . irresistible.

I sure would like to find one . Not a creampuff or a project boat but a nice clean strong boat . I am not sure about the wide deck or the one with the built in seating. I would guess the one with built in seats would be for me as I am in my late 70’s and would like to be able to stretch out on the seat for a easy leisurely sail.

I have a wide deck model. Hull 206. They rails are just about the perfect sitting space. I haven’t seen a built in bench model but I image the benches would be too narrow to be cofortable. Some deck models have benches. Mine come with them, but they weren’t installed. I would be willing to sell them if you end up with a wide deck model. They are teak. The hulls are tough, and boat is really a joy to sail. And friend and I just sailed from Astoria to Cathlamet, Wa last week. Plained a good stretch of the way. Love this boat.

About Interlake Sailing Class Association

The Interlake Sailing Class has something for everyone, and has been providing the best of racing and fellowship for nearly 100 years! Our goal has always been to be a Midwest regional class and to promote high-level competition in a friendly atmosphere. Members not only value the feel and performance of the boat, as well as the competition, but also enjoy the festivities which surround the events. This philosophy has served the class well for over seventy years. “Extremely tactical” is the way multi-class champion George Fisher describes Interlake racing. “The stiff mast makes a great equalizer,” says George. This fact also allows the skipper to tune into the great feel and responsiveness of the boat and concentrate on wind and tactics . . . not tweaking the rig. Interlake racing is tight!

“Our mission is to create an environment that promotes keen and friendly competition with an emphasis on teaching and assisting the entry-level sailor. The ISCA is committed to growth through the managing of sales, distribution, and marketing of the Interlake boat.”

COLUMBUS, OH - Sailing photo below is courtesy of Interlake class stalwart Steve Nearing taken at the nearly 100-year old Leatherlips YC on the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir, a wide spot in the Scioto River northwest of Columbus. Nearly 1500 Interlakes have been built since the inception of the class in 1933 when the Sandusky Sailing Club commissioned

Francis Sweisguth (1882-1970) to design a small, lively trailerable centerboarder suitable for racing on Lake Erie. Mr Sweisguth also designed the Star which, of course, went on to international and Olympic fame; note the similarity of the Interlake's sail plan and hard-chines. The Interlake is primarily raced on the Great Lakes and in the small inland lakes of Ohio and Michigan – one of the few things folks from Ann Arbor and Columbus (Michigan and Ohio for that matter) agree on, given the intense interstate rivalry of their respective college football teams.

Coincidentally, 1317 is owned by Clark Chapin of Portage Yacht Club , your Ed.'s home club a few miles northwest of Ann Arbor, MI. Clark has been a leader in US SAILING and the Interlake Class for decades, a respected senior judge, and is an editorial contributor to SAILING ILLUSTRATED. Full disclosure – your Ed. has served as PRO for the Interlake Class National Championships half a dozen times over the past five decades, and spent many happy hours racing Interlakes, with and against Tom Ehman, Sr., who still campaigns his Interlake at age 84.

To conclude our little Class Action history lesson, do any of our Dear Readers know, without googling it, the genesis of the name Leatherlips YC? And what famous zoo is located just across the river from LYC?

P.S. Now that I think about it, as a freshman at UMich your Ed.'s first collegiate regatta was hosted by Leatherlips YC. Bruce Nelson, who grew up to be the noted yacht designer (some would argue with a part of that assertion), was our sophomore, and at times sophomoric, team captain. We were crushing the regatta and after the first day Bruce let the other teams in on our ostensible strategy – when beating up the far shore of the river "just tack on the elephant farts." More than a few believed him.

Boat builder Wes Blazer making Port Clinton splash with Interlake sailboats

Wes Blazer of Weatherly Boat Works on Buckeye Boulevard in Port Clinton debuted his new Interlake sailboat at the recent Catawba Island Boat Show. A very popular sailboat today, the Interlake was first manufactured in 1935 for the Sandusky Sailing Club. (Photo by D’Arcy Egan)

BY D’ARCY EGAN

The boat building industry that put Port Clinton in the spotlight decades ago with the stately Matthews yachts is long gone, but this summer Wes Blazer of Weatherly Boat Works on Buckeye Boulevard in Port Clinton is bringing boat building back to the region. The Sandusky native is creating new 18-foot Interlake sailboats, a boat that has been very popular with sailors along the Lake Erie shore and around the country since 1935.

“I have a lot of experience with fiberglass boats, from building molds and creating prototype boats, after working for a few years in research and development for Boston Whaler in Edgewater, Fla.,” said Blazer, 31. He had always wanted to return to his home town of Sandusky, though, where he had been a member of an Interlake sailing club and enjoyed racing the sleek sailboats.

The Sandusky Sailing Club set the standards in 1935 for the Interlake, said Blazer, and his Interlake boats today are faithful to the 18-foot length, the 650-pound weight of each boat and the standardized hull, mast and rudders. It makes for a level playing field when sailors square off on the water.

“The new boats are actually much easier to sail, and safer,” said Blazer. “In the old days, when the Interlake sailboats were being produced in the Toledo area, they were empty shells with a deck.

“I’ve incorporated a flotation system in the new ones, making for a safer boat. If you should capsize, the boat is not going to sink. The design lets a sailor bail bail out the boat and keep on going. It’s not a self-righting design, but rather  self-rescuing.”

Blazer has the five molds needed to produce an Interlake boat, and the interest in new Interlake sailboats has been very good, he said. Harry Kilpatrick at Custom Flex in Toledo had made them for years, and while mentally sharp, said Blazer, he’s approaching his 90s.

The Interlake popularity is not a surprise. For many, sailing and racing Interlake boats has been a family tradition.

“I’ve seen three generations still sailing the same Interlake sailboat,” Blazer said. “I know youngsters whose families were members of the Sandusky Sailing Club take up sailing and end up get married. Sailing is a wholesome sport, and the Interlake Sailing Class Association has events this year from Florida to Ohio.”

The Sandusky Sailing Club has a one-Design Regatta on June 9-10, while Cleveland Race Week has an Interlake event out of Edgewater Yacht Club on June 16-17. Edgewater hosts the national championship on July 25-28. There are also One Design Regattas at Indian Lake on July 7-8 and the Lorain Sailing Yacht Club on July 14.

Blazer’s goal is to build one Interlake sailboat per month, a goal now realistic after teaming with Tom Humphrey, who owns the building on Buckeye Boulevard where Blazer is making the boats.

“I was renting a garage in Sandusky, which was suitable for making only one boat at a time,” said Blazer. “Tom called to say he needed a storage area and I needed a more spacious place to make the boats. It was the perfect solution.”

Blazer also does fiberglass work on power and sailboats, and repairs and renovations on elderly wooden boats, such as the many Lymans around the area.

“I got my start building boats when I was just 13 years old, signing up for a boat building class at the museum in Vermilion. The teacher was Bob Reynolds, the grandson of Scott Matthews, the owner of Matthews Boats in Port Clinton.

“Matthews was the Rolls Royce of boats back then,” said Blazer. “Lyman, made in Sandusky, was the Chevy or Ford pickup. The Inland Seas Steel Clipper and Darst Boats were also made in Sandusky back then.”

Blazer still spends his weekends racing Interlake sailboats, and building new Interlake sailboats during the week. This week, he said, he is filling an order for Interlake No. 1,143 and renovating a beloved Interlake built in 1968.

I am the third owner of this boat, I have not sailed it but the previous owner was sailing the boat in 2013. The hull needs some fiberglass work done where the centerboard pocket is on the hull, and the floor has delaminated. The sails, rudder, mast and boom are in good condition. The tiller is in working condition but should be replaced. The Pamco trailer is in excellent condition and only needs tires and paint. I would probably replace the wooden guides also. This is Hull #1, 1961, Windjammer 21's from California, designed by Morgan Embrogan and built in Southern California back in the 60's and early 70's by various commercial builders. There were at least 15 built and I have a gaff-rigged, topsail cutter. This Windjammer sailed to Hawaii and back from California twice and to Alaska and back to CA. boats have very easily folded masts, even under sail, fit into US containers (24). The Windjammer 21 will sleep 4 in separate bunks and is very comfortable under way and in the slip. With quadrant centerboard up it draw 18 inches and weight empty is 2500#. It has always been great in the Channel Islands because it cuts over the kelp and because it is so light we used to tie off to the kelp (don't shoot me) to keep from carrying 600' feet of line and extra chain necessary to normal anchor around the islands. Boat is in Charleston, SC now on a trailer. Steel trailer has 4 new tires, wheels, bearings, recently pulled from Florida. 6 bags of sails, all rigging, outboard in a well, boat is ready to sail but could use some TLC, paint, varnish, etc. Photo of Black hull boat is a sistership. Could deliver for a fee if needed after purchase.

Whitefish considers recreation and trail agreements

Whitefish City Hall in downtown Whitefish. (Heidi Desch/Whitefish Pilot FILE)

Whitefish City Council on Monday is being asked to approve three separate agreements pertaining to recreation in and outside of the city.

Council will consider a recreation license for Spencer Mountain trails, a memo regarding Beaver Lake and a trail agreement regarding its bike and pedestrian path along the Whitefish River.

City Council meets at 7:10 p.m. at City Hall, 418 E. Second St.

Following a public hearing, Council is set to vote on a proposed land use license agreement with the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation for the Spencer Mountain area. The 10-year license continues previous agreements regarding the trail area.

In 2013, DNRC, Whitefish Legacy Partners and the city negotiated a license agreement to construct and maintain new and existing trails, features, trailheads, parking areas and other improvements in the Spencer Mountain area. The license covers about 9 miles of the Whitefish Trail and 7 miles of Free Ride Trails.

That same year, the Flathead Area Mountain Bikers and city entered into an agreement under which FAMB serves as the trail system manager for the Free Ride Trails and is responsible for building, maintaining structures, trails and improvements.

The entities involved have negotiated the renewal of the license. The city holds the licenses and easements for the trails and does not contribute funds related to the trails.

Council is also set to approve a resolution regarding a memorandum of understanding with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for the Beaver Lake Fishing Access Site. The agreement replaces one that expired last month, and now requires FWP to provide routine maintenance at the fishing access site, to maintain the vault toilet, the parking area and boat ramp, and to pursue capital improvements pursuant to the FWP capital improvement request process.

Finally, Council will consider approving an agreement with the Miles Whitefish Investment, LLC regarding a new section of the Whitefish River trail. The new section is planned to connect the existing paths from where it ends at the Veterans Bridge on U.S. 93 and begins again at the BNSF River Trail.

The new trail section will run between the river and two condominium developments located along Miles Avenue, one of which is owned by Miles Whitefish Investment.

The agreement provides that the city will apply to FWP for a 124 Permit to construct the trail segment and then the city will engage in a bidding process for the construction of the trail. Miles Whitefish Investment will then reimburse the city about $200,000, the amount of the bid for construction of the trail received in January 2023.

The city will be responsible for paying the difference between the amount paid and the cost of construction for the trail.

During a work session at 5:15 p.m., Council is set to review a wage market study report by Communications & Management Services. The city hired the consultant to help determine the competitiveness of compensation packages offered by the city as it’s faced inflation and rising costs of living in the past few years.
