AFFINITY was commissioned by an experienced yachting couple with a lifelong passion for sailing. Working together with her owners, Delta built an arresting 151-foot composite exploration-style yacht with a full-displacement hull, capable of providing the finest performance and extraordinary comfort while at sea for months at a time. This rugged and reliable yacht is supplied with electronic series 3508 Caterpillar engines to power through frequent transoceanic cruising.

Designed with a maritime theme, Delta constructed AFFINITY’s interior of rich cherry and maple woods to highlight the owners’ collection of ship and racing models, nautical paintings, and antiques. Accommodations are generous; below deck, there’s room for ten guests in four staterooms with en suite heads in addition to a full-width main-deck owner’s suite and head complete with a separate office. Convertible pullman berths and sofa beds in the owner’s party areas allow for an additional ten overnight guests. Numerous entertaining areas include a formal dining room, a wet bar plus three seating arrangements in the main salon, aft deck dining, a spacious sky lounge, and on the flybridge, a hot tub, sunbeds, al fresco dining, and abundant seating. The large aft area on the upper deck is designed for a helicopter as well as a variety of tenders, including an unusually large 27-foot custom-built tender for diving and other offshore excursions. The upper deck serves as an expansive observation deck, while the lazarette off the engine room encompasses a full gym complete with its own shower.

Whether sunning on one of the many decks, admiring panoramic views from a lounge, or enjoying the yacht’s other excellent amenities, owners and guests delight in AFFINITY as she powers her way around the world.

When Kristen Manion Taylor announced her breast cancer diagnosis to her “Delta family,” a care package from her “survival sister,” Marenda Hughes Taylor, contained the ultimate memento for the battle ahead: a pair of pink boxing gloves.

When Kristen Manion Taylor, Senior Vice President of In-Flight Service, announced her breast cancer diagnosis to her “Delta family,” a care package from her “survival sister,” Marenda Hughes Taylor, contained the ultimate memento for the battle ahead: a pair of pink boxing gloves.

The two had forged an instant kinship when Kristen became Senior Vice President of In-Flight Service, leading flight attendants like Marenda at the airline – connecting on their shared experience with breast cancer. Marenda is also a breast cancer survivor, and her inspiration stood out as extra special among the messages of encouragement that poured in from across the “Delta family.”

“On the tougher days, I’d take one look at the gloves and know I had to keep fighting – all thanks to Marenda,” Kristen said.

On Tuesday, Kristen honored Marenda as this year’s Roslyn and Leslie Goldstein Unsung Hero Award recipient – an award presented to a friend (not a relative or medical professional) who provided compassion, love and support. The award is given at the annual Breast Cancer Research Foundation Hot Pink Party in New York, where Delta people were recognized for raising more than $3.25 million for BCRF in 2023.

Kristen Manion Taylor, Senior Vice President of In-Flight Service at Delta, honored Delta flight attendant and "survival sister" Marenda Hughes Taylor with the Roslyn and Leslie Goldstein Unsung Hero Award at this year's Breast Cancer Research Foundation Hot Pink Party in New York.

“This is the highest honor I've received. I don't have words to even express how much it means to me,” Marenda said. “It touches my heart and the fact that Kristen is presenting it to me makes it even more special.”

Marenda’s own survival journey began in 2014 at the age of 39. She discovered a lump during a self-exam at home, which prompted her to see the doctor. After a mammogram and biopsy, Marenda was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Stage 1 breast cancer.

“It was devastating because I didn't think that I would ever be that person with cancer,” Marenda said. “I was shocked, nervous and really concerned about what my future was going to look like.”

She went into treatment immediately, beginning with six rounds of chemotherapy before receiving a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Marenda joined Delta in 2017 and now uses her story to encourage other women to prioritize their health.

“This award celebrates the importance of hope and enduring friendship throughout a breast cancer journey, and there is no pair that exemplifies these qualities more than Marenda and Kristen,” said BCRF President and CEO, Donna McKay. “They are incredible representatives of the unwavering dedication that Delta Air Lines has to supporting its employees who are impacted by the disease, and to funding lifesaving research that will one day eradicate breast cancer.”

Delta employees who raised the most for the cause this year, either through on-board or online donations, were in attendance and presented the donation to BCRF alongside Delta leaders.

At this year's Breast Cancer Research Foundation Hot Pink Party in New York, Delta people were recognized for raising more than $3.25 million for BCRF in 2023.

Since the partnership began in 2005, Delta has raised $28 million for BCRF, fueling 560,000 hours of research over the years in the pursuit of eradicating breast cancer.

BCRF is a nonprofit organization committed to achieving prevention and a cure for breast cancer. It provides critical funding for cancer research worldwide to fuel advances in tumor biology, genetics, prevention, treatment, metastasis and survivorship. Since its founding in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder, BCRF has raised more than a billion dollars for lifesaving research.

Delta soars and air canada struggles in j.d. power 2024 airline study.

Delta, Southwest and JetBlue got top marks for customer satisfaction.

J.D. Power just released its 2024 North America Airline Satisfaction Study , and while some airlines shone, others are clearly not prioritizing customer service. As domestic air travel continues to rise (with passenger volume increasing by 9.4% compared to the previous year) airlines find it challenging to maintain customer satisfaction amid crowded gates, overflowing overhead bins and rising ticket prices. However, the J.D. Power 2024 North America Airline Satisfaction Study, released on May 8, shows that some airlines are responding to these challenges by focusing heavily on staff training and doing what they can to improve the overall flight experience through friendly and attentive service. These efforts are paying off, allowing some airlines to deliver exceptional customer experiences despite the growing number of travelers.

While Air Canada appeared to come out as one of the worst airlines in North America placing last in business class and premium economy (with other Canadian national carrier WestJet ranking somewhere in the middle) Delta, Southwest and JetBlue got top marks for customer satisfaction.

“There are many aspects to the overall air travel experience that airlines cannot control, but one area in which they can profoundly influence is the positive effect that airline staff has on passengers,” said Michael Taylor, senior managing director of travel, hospitality, retail and customer service. “The big takeaway from this year’s study is the power of people to positively influence the overall flight experience. Airlines that are investing in staff training and recruitment are finding ways to overcome the negative effects of crowded gates and planes simply by being nice to their customers.”

Air Canada appeared to come out as one of the worst airlines in North America placing last in ... [+] business class and premium economy

First/business division: Delta Air Lines got the highest marks for customer satisfaction in the first/business division with a score of 743. JetBlue Airways (736) came in second. Air Canada came in last (629).

‘Fallout’ Dethroned In Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 List By A New Offering

Google chrome gets second emergency update in a week as new exploit confirmed, metallica makes history with their new no 1 single.

Premium economy : Delta Air Lines again got the highest ratings in customer satisfaction for premium economy for a second year in a row, with a score of 716. Alaska Airlines (687) came in second and American Airlines (684) got third place. Air Canada came in last (628).

Economy: Southwest Airlines came in first in customer satisfaction in economy/basic economy for the third year in a row, with a score of 685. Delta Air Lines (651) received second place and Allegiant Air (633) came in third. Air Canada came in third from the bottom with Frontier and Spirit receiving worse ratings.

Here are some of the major findings from the 2024 survey:

Passengers prioritize a smooth and secure travel experience over ticket prices : The J.D. Power 2024 North America Airline Satisfaction Study reveals that ease of travel and trust have the most significant impact on airline customer satisfaction. Although the price of tickets remains important, passengers appear to care even more about enjoying a seamless flight experience, indicating that convenience and reliability are more crucial than cost in shaping customer perceptions of airline quality.

Media coverage matters: Media coverage influences passengers' trust in airlines, with negative news stories strongly equaling lower trust scores. The survey reveals that passengers who saw media coverage about an airline's performance in the past year rated their trust in that airline 400 points lower on a 1,000-point scale compared to those who did not see such negative press. This substantial difference in trust scores highlights the powerful influence media reports have on shaping passengers' perceptions and confidence in airlines.

Investments in people is key: The top airlines in this year’s study—Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines—have made large investments in their employees.

You can read more about the study and see all the rankings on the J.D. Power website .

St. Mary’s College of Maryland Graduates 356 at 2024 Commencement

Graduates in cap & gown carrying diplomas

St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Public Honors College, graduated 356 students with Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees on Saturday, May 11, outdoors on the campus’ Townhouse Green.

Maryland’s longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD 5th) delivered the keynote address. In his message to the College's newest alumni, he spoke of the impact the pandemic had on this class of students and the significance of the class of 2024 being together amongst family, friends, faculty and staff for the commencement exercises. He said he brought up the pandemic not to focus on what was lost but to reflect on what was gained.

"For while your generation knows better than any other the pain of being apart, you also know better than any other the joy that comes with joining together," Hoyer said. "Because you felt the sorrow of separation, you understand the importance of inclusion. You saw the devastation of distance, and now you have special appreciation for the pleasure of proximity."

Hoyer received an honorary degree from St. Mary’s College in 1993, at his first appearance as commencement speaker. Hoyer also spoke before the class of 2007.

President Tuajuanda C. Jordan, accompanied by Board of Trustees Chair Susan Dyer, presented an honorary degree to national higher education leader Lynn Pasquerella.

Since 2016, Pasquerella has been president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). Prior to her position as president of AAC&U, she was president of Mount Holyoke College; provost at the University of Hartford; and vice provost for academic affairs and dean of the graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, where she taught for more than 20 years.

She earned her PhD in philosophy from Brown University; undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College; and associate of arts degree from Quinebaug Valley Community College.

President Jordan had one request for the Class of 2024. “Recognize and understand the society into which you are now venturing. Give back. Remember the people who have not had the same opportunity, the same blessings, the same education you have. Live the St. Mary’s Way.”

The College’s newest alumni heard from one of the five class valedictorians. The valedictorians were: Sabrina Kuhn, Laura McCarty, Margaret Neuman, Angelie Roche and Ben Springer.

Kuhn was selected to address the class via lottery. She spoke of how she and many classmates grew into adulthood during a time of “great uncertainty,” speaking of experiencing that transition amidst a global pandemic. “The fact that we all made it to graduation here today is a testament to the resilience of our generation,” Kuhn said. Kuhn charged the class to “go forward courageously, armed with knowledge and compassion from your time here, to make the world a better place.”

President Jordan recognized six faculty who retired this year: Karen Crawford, professor of biology; David Ellsworth, associate professor of film and media studies; Rachel Myerowitz, professor of biology; Elizabeth Osborn, professor of sociology; Larry Vote, professor of music; and Christine Wooley, professor of English. Collectively, these retirees represent 161 years of teaching.

The commencement was live-streamed on the College’s website.

Orcas Sink 49-Foot Yacht in Mystifying Trend Around the Strait of Gibraltar

A n unknown number of orcas sunk a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday, according to Spain’s maritime rescue service. While orcas are typically peaceful, this is the latest in a string of attacks that have hit the region in the past four years.

Reuters reports that a 49-foot-long vessel, named the Alboran Cognac, carried two people and encountered the high social apex predators at 9 am local time on Sunday. The passengers reported sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the water started seeping into the ship. A nearby oil tanker rescued the two onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left to sink into the ocean.

Experts believe the orcas involved to be a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the name “Gladis.” This group of juvenile males has sunk several yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar over the last four years, but experts are somewhat baffled as to why. While typically peaceful animals, the Gladis pod has plagued the small strip of water separating Europe and Africa for years.

There have been nearly 700 interactions between orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar region since May 2020, according to Reuters. At the time, it seemed like one of many dystopian things going on in the world during the global pandemic. But the trend continues today, and we still don’t have much more of an explanation as to why this happens.

In 2020, photos of the Gladis pod revealed several injuries on the orcas’ bodies, possibly indicating previous run-ins with fishing boats. In a 2023 interview with NPR, director of the Orca Behavior Institute Monika Wieland Shields said we don’t know the motivation, but this could be a defense behavior based on previous trauma. It’s possible the orcas had negative experiences with a fishing boat, so now they see all large boats as a threat.

“I definitely think orcas are capable of complex emotions like revenge,” she told NPR. “I don’t think we can completely rule it out.”

However, Shields doesn’t completely subscribe to the “revenge” hypothesis. There have been plenty of other times when orcas around the world were targeted by boats, and they’ve never responded in this way before. Further, it doesn’t seem that this behavior is spreading to other orca pods.

Another theory is that ramming boats is just the latest orca fad, according to Renaud de Stephanis, president and coordinator at CIRCE Conservación Information and Research, a cetacean research group based in Spain. He told NPR in 2022 that “this is a game” for the orcas, and when they “ have their own adult life, it will probably stop. ” As orcas grow older, they have to help the pod hunt for food and have less time to play with sailboats.

Director of Bay Cetology, Jared Towers, told NPR that fads like this come and go in the orca society. Towers said some orcas in the Pacific in the 1990s would kill fish and swim around with it on their head. Now we don’t see that anymore. Hopefully, the boat ramming phenomenon will come and go like any other trend.
