2025 BMW X5 and X6 Review: True luxury performance

Two different body styles, multiple powertrains, lots of tech and opulence.

PROS CONS
Strong performance Available X5 plug-in hybrid Loaded with (mostly) useful tech X5’s useful split tailgate/liftgate Steep tech learning curve Back seat not as big as you’d expect X6’s practicality compromises $$$

The 2025 BMW X5 and X6 are a pair of mechanically similar two-row luxury SUVs with different body styles. The X5 is a more traditional midsize crossover SUV , while the X6 features a “ crossover coupe” silhouette with a sloping roofline that gives it a unique look at the sacrifice of space. Both are fairly opulent, and quite sporty, but only the X5 offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain option. They now benefit from mild-hybrid technology for smoother performance, and both offer high-performance M Competition versions with a twin-turbo V8 making 617 horsepower.

The X5 and X6 are also packed full of tech, much of it flashy, most of it useful. A lot of it, like the infotainment system, comes with a fairly steep learning curve. Some of it, like the gesture control, is just goofy. But there’s a high level of comfort whether you’re a driver or passenger, and available luxury items that can make the X5 and X6 quite cozy — and costly. Just be aware that despite being awfully big and heavy vehicles on the outside, passenger space isn’t as generous as you might expect.

Nevertheless, between its technology, luxury, comfort and performance, the BMW X5 — or the slightly less practical X6 — is a heavy hitter in the midsize luxury SUV set, and should not be overlooked.

What it's like to drive    |   pricing & trim levels    |   crash ratings & safety features, what's new for 2025.

The 2025 X5 and X6 mostly carry over from the 2024 model year, which received a mid-cycle refresh with updated styling, revised technology, a mild-hybrid system, plus more power and range for the plug-in hybrid. For 2025, BMW added a lane-change assist feature to its hands-free Highway Assist system. Model year 2025 also sees a limited X5 Silver Anniversary Edition with exclusive off-road equipment. Pricing has also risen a bit.

What are the X5 and X6 interior and in-car technology like?

The BMW X5 and X6 mostly share a luxurious and sporty interior that’s both comfortable and high-tech. Materials are of high quality, whether it’s the base “Sensafin” synthetic leather or the more expensive Merino actual leather, in unique colors and patterns. And as is typical for this lofty segment of luxury SUVs, you can outfit the X5 in a truly opulent manner with things like a leather-wrapped dash, heated just-about everything (front and rear seats, steering wheel, armrests and cupholders), a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and multiple choices of wood trim, metal weaves, and glass finishings on center console controls. With the latter, you can make the electronic shifter look like a sort of crystal talisman from a fantasy novel.

The centerpiece of the interior is a curved display housing a 14.9-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch driver display. Make sure to set aside lots of time during a test drive (and delivery, if you buy one) to learn about the innumerable features and customization settings controlled by BMW's iDrive 8 infotainment system. This isn't a car you just hop in and drive away. Everything from the way the gauges look to your preferred combination of powertrain and chassis settings can be programmed the way you like it. Opting for an X5 (or X6) M Competition only adds to the customizability of the driving experience. Plus, it can be controlled through a multitude of different means: the center console knob and surrounding capacitive menu "buttons," the touchscreen, natural voice commands, or the rather useless gesture control (wave your hands about like a wizard to accomplish tasks, just in case that crystal talisman wasn’t enough). We found we liked to accomplish different tasks using different means of interface, which speaks to the value in such control redundancy.

How big are the X5 and X6?

The X5 is a midsize SUV that seats five people in two rows. That configuration, along with its general exterior dimensions, makes it consistent with a Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class , Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q8 . The Lexus RX 350 is also within spitting distance of this group, but costs much less. Inside, we found the rear seat doesn't exactly provide the sprawl out space you might expect from a high-dollar SUV. The seat back also doesn't recline. Headroom in the rear of the X5 is abundant, however, and shoulder room is typical for the segment, meaning fitting three across shouldn't be an issue. You sacrifice a little bit of that headroom in the X6 thanks to it “coupe” body style’s raked roofline.

Now, while rear passenger space is just OK, X5 cargo space is among the best in the two-row segment. It also features a distinctive cargo opening: a power-operated liftgate and tailgate combination. This allows you to access things inside without fear of those things rolling out when you open the tailgate. It also creates a nice, clean place to sit, and one our editors reports it makes for a perfect baby changing table when on the go. That extra length does make it hard to reach items deep in the cargo area, or to attach car seats to the anchor on the back of the seat.

The X6 unique shape results in a sacrifice of cargo space for style. It offers 27.5 cubic feet behind the second row, as compared to the X5 and its 33.9 cubic feet of luggage-swallowing cargo area. It still fares pretty well when it’s time to pack the car up, though, as we found with our luggage test . It also doesn’t boast that slick, two-part liftgate/tailgate.

What are the X5 and X6 fuel economy and performance specs?

The base powertrain is the turbocharged, mild-hybrid-assisted 3.0-liter inline-six and eight-speed automatic transmission in the rear-wheel-drive X5 sDrive40i, and the all-wheel drive X5 xDrive40i and X6 xDrive40i. It produces 375 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, pushing the rear-drive X5 from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive X5 and X6 do it in 5.2 seconds. Both X5 drivetrain configurations have a fuel economy rating of 23 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. The X6 xDrive40i gets 23/26/24 mpg.

The X5 gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain — called xDrive50e — that the X6 doesn’t offer. It also uses the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, combined with a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The system is good for a total of 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. While the EPA hasn’t yet published official fuel economy figures, BMW says it gets 58 miles-per-gallon equivalent when the battery is charged. Electric-only driving range is 40 miles.

Moving up to the X5 and X6 M60i xDrive, they feature a mild-hybrid twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Output increases to 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, while the 0-60 sprint decreases to 4.2 seconds. Fuel economy drops to 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

The top of the line, and the only full M variant for 2025, comes in the X5 and X5 M Competition. Its twin-turbocharged V8 also features mild-hybrid tech, and puts 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both the X5 and X6 go from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, which is madness for a large luxury SUV. They unsurprisingly also have the worst fuel economy of the lineup at 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined.

bmw x5 yachtline

What are the X5 and X6 like to drive?

The X5 and X6 are soft, quiet and buttery smooth around town or on the highway, feeling impeccably engineered to make you only mildly aware of your surroundings. When you start to hustle them along, however, there's a poise and sophistication to the way they take corners that you wouldn't expect from something so comfy the rest of the time. Selecting Sport or Individual tightens the steering, suspension, transmission and throttle response accordingly. The height-adjustable suspension even lowers itself in Sport.

The plug-in hybrid — available in the X5 but not the X6 — benefits not just in terms of power than the 40i, but in getting electric-only range. It’s quick, its 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque providing sub-5-second 0-60 rips. But you can also drive it around efficiently, and on electric power only for up to 40 miles. With the electric motor integrated into the transmission, it feels seamless and natural switching between electric and gas power. It’s still fairly well balanced in the corners, despite its hefty curb weight.

With 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, they’re mighty quick, to the point that they can get a little squirrelly on you with everything put into sport modes. There’s a whole lotta oomph with very little effort. The breathy V8 roars to life without hesitation. It’s almost too eager, with a casual tip-in eliciting a bit more snap than one might like when trying to drive smoothly in traffic. It’s not a problem when you’ve got wide-open road ahead of you, though. After that initial punch off the line, the V8 continues to pull hard, taking you to exciting speeds with an appropriate amount of fanfare. The transmission is a blast to interact with when you put it in manual mode and use the paddle shifters, as well.

They’re able to calm down and behave when you need them too, making the X5 and X6 M Competition suitable daily drivers despite their performance leanings.

2025 BMW X5

2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i 4dr SUV Exterior Shown

2025 BMW X5 Review

bmw x5 yachtline

  • Strong performance from available engines
  • Luxurious, comfortable cabin lives up to its price tag
  • Spacious interior and cargo area
  • Small mirrors and wide roof pillars create blind spots
  • Limited interior storage
  • Wide doorsills inhibit entry and exit

What's new

  • Hands-free Highway Assistant adds an autonomous lane change function
  • Minor equipment and packaging revisions
  • Part of the fourth X5 generation introduced for 2019

If we had to summarize the 2025 BMW X5 in three words, they would be performance, poise and practicality. This midsize luxury SUV is quick and rewarding to drive, is assembled with care using quality materials, and has a roomy interior with available seating for up to seven people or more than 70 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. It impresses in standard specification. However, you can upgrade to the efficient xDrive50e plug-in hybrid or maximize performance with the M60i's turbocharged V8 engine. No matter which X5 you choose, it will likely satisfy your luxury SUV cravings.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2025 BMW X5 sDrive40i 4dr SUV (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.23 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: is the bmw x5 plug-in hybrid worth it.

With the X5 xDrive50e, BMW offers a plug-in hybrid version of the SUV that can travel about 40 miles running only on electricity. After that, the gasoline engine turns on, and the xDrive50e will reportedly return 22-23 mpg. BMW charges a $5,100 premium for this powertrain compared to a standard X5 xDrive40i, but you get more than just electric-only driving. The X5 xDrive50e boasts 108 more horsepower, contributing to a claimed 4.6-second acceleration run to 60 mph compared to 5.3 seconds for the more fuel-efficient 375-hp xDrive40i. Is the X5 plug-in hybrid worth the added cost? Plug it in each night and charge the battery, and in the long run, the answer might be yes. But it will take a while to make the numbers pencil.

Competitors to consider

You can get an optional third-row seat in a 2025 BMW X5, so this midsize SUV competes with a range of similarly configured two-row and three-row rivals. They include the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo XC90, and all except the Audi are available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. From this quartet, the BMW most closely matches the Mercedes in price, size, performance and available configurations.

What’s it like to live with?

We conducted a long-term test of a 2020 BMW X5 and found living with the SUV to be a rewarding experience. Since then, BMW has made many changes to the X5, but the newest models remain part of the same generation as our long-term test vehicle, meaning many of our observations still apply to the 2025 model.

Which X5 does Edmunds recommend?

Our favorite version of the BMW X5 is the xDrive40i . It offers plenty of power from its silky smooth inline six-cylinder engine, has all-wheel drive for traveling in lousy weather, and supplies commendable fuel economy for an SUV of this size. It also has plenty of standard features and optional upgrades.

BMW X5 models

A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine (375 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque) equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology lives under the hood of the sDrive40i, and an eight-speed automatic transmission powers the SUV's rear wheels. The xDrive40i has the same powertrain but includes all-wheel drive.

A plug-in hybrid drivetrain motivates the xDrive50e. It uses a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, electric motors and a rechargeable battery pack, and has standard all-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the xDrive50e can travel 40 miles purely on electricity. When the battery reaches its minimum state of charge, the xDrive50e operates as a regular gas-electric hybrid vehicle. The total system output is 483 hp and 516 lb-ft.

For a higher level of performance, step up to the M Sport-tuned X5 M60i. It has a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (523 hp, 553 lb-ft) equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and comes with standard all-wheel drive.

sDrive40i, xDrive40i and xDrive50e Aside from powertrain differences, these three versions of the X5 are similarly equipped. Standard features include:

  • LED headlights with cornering lights
  • Adaptive suspension dampers
  • Air suspension (xDrive50e only)
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Run-flat tires

  • 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Navigation system
  • Wireless device charger
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration

2025 BMW X5 First Impressions

bmw x5 yachtline

BMW's X5 has been around for more than two decades and throughout that time has offered a satisfying blend of performance, luxury and cutting-edge technology. With seating for five (the X5 used to offer an optional third row) and a choice of powerful six- and eight-cylinder engines as well as a plug-in hybrid version, the X5 can be tailored to suit almost any SUV buyer's needs. Having just received a mild styling refresh and interior updates for the 2024 model year, we don't think BMW is likely to change anything substantial on the X5 for 2025.

Edmunds spotlight: Powerful powertrains

No matter which level of X5 you choose, you won't be lacking for horsepower. In its entry-level forms, the sDrive40i and all-wheel-drive xDrive40i, the X5 uses a twin-turbocharged three-liter inline six-cylinder engine churning out a healthy 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Opting for the plug-in hybrid, the xDrive50e, adds an electric motor, boosting power to 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, and provides an EPA-estimated 40 miles of electric-only range. At the top of the model line is the M60i and its 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 pumping out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Of course if you require even more power, there's the potent X5 M, which we review separately.

Most every luxury manufacturer offers an SUV in the midsize segment so the X5 has a fair bit of competition. The strongest rivals come from Germany in the form of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Porsche Cayenne . Other midsize luxury SUVs include the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, the Genesis GV80 and the Maserati Levante. If the X5 doesn't quite fit your lifestyle, BMW offers the smaller and versatile X3 and the larger three-row X7 SUV.

Edmunds says

On the heels of a styling refresh and interior update, we don't think the BMW X5 will arrive with any significant updates for the 2025 model year. We expect the X5 to remain a strong option in its segment thanks to its well-rounded performance and well-integrated technology.

2026 BMW X5 spy shots

Joel Feder

  • The next-generation BMW X5 has been spotted
  • The 2026 BMW X5 will arrive late in 2025 or early in 2026
  • Expect updated gas powertrains, with a plug-in variant

The next-generation 2026 BMW X5  has been caught testing on public roads in Europe.

The design will be distinctly different than today's SUV. Despite being seen in early prototype form, heavily clad in camouflage, it's clear the new X5 will feature a design previewed by the Neue Klasse concepts. A Vision Neue Klass sedan concept first previewed the upcoming design language in 2023, and it was followed by an SUV dubbed the Vision Neue Klasse X concept in 2024.

The new design language will keep the iconic kidney grilles , which have grown larger and larger in recent years. This design will update them to be sleeker, thinner, and more horizontal in design. The slimmer headlights, combined with the grille, accentuate the X5's width. The camo-covered grilles appear to be solid–and may be hiding sensors for safety systems–with all air feeding the gas engine coming from the middle and lower portions of the bumper. The rear taillights, even in their early prototype stage, seem to bleed into the rear fenders in a similar fashion as what first started with the XM crossover SUV .

The entire design is cleaner and less fussy than current BMWs, which was a focus of the Neue Klasse language. The doors are completely smooth with no standard door handles or openings for the hand. There's a small piece that looks like a small wing that may be a door opener mounted along the window line by the B- and C-pillars.

The X5 has always featured a split tailgate and it appears there's a line in the rear hatch that could continue this design trait. The rear hatch has a steeper rake than today's X5 that may, or may not, cut into cargo room.

The next-gen X5 will continue to offer gas engines under the hood. The prototypes' exhaust tips and mufflers can be seen peeking out from under the rear bumper area. Turbo-4, turbo-6, plug-in hybrid, V-8, and high-performance variants are all likely to appear. Each of the powertrains is expected to be updated versions of what's offered in today's X5 as BMW is no longer developing clean-sheet gas engines. BMW doesn't even build engines in Germany anymore as it prepares for the electric future.

BMW’s Exploding Airbag Recall Extends To 5, 6-Series, M4, X3 And X5

  • BMW is recalling a further 1,145 cars because an airbag inflator explosion could send metal shards into the driver’s face.
  • Models affected include the 2014 5-Series, 2015 6-Series Gran Coupe, 2013-14 X3 and 2014 X5 and M4.
  • Earlier this month BMW recalled almost 400,000 3-Series sedans and wagons fitted with M Sport steering wheels potentially containing defective Takata airbags.

It’s now more than seven years since auto component supplier Takata imploded , but the company’s infamous airbags are still wreaking havoc across the auto industry. BMW has announced it’s recalling 1,145 cars to have their airbags inspected, having already issued a recall for almost 400,000 vehicles earlier this month.

The previous recall was focused on various models of 3-Series sedan and wagon built between 2005 and 2012 and fitted with M Sport steering wheels, but while the new campaign also affects 3-Series owners, it also targets more expensive BMW s built in the years since, including the 4-Series, 5-Series, 6-Series, M4, X3 and X5.

BMW identified these cars as potentially being equipped with a PSDI-X inflator that was also the subject of recall in 2023. The automaker says an inflator explosion could result in metal fragments launching out of the steering wheel and striking the driver or passenger.

Owners can continue to drive their cars until BMW contacts them, which won’t happen until early September. Once they’ve received an invite they’ll be able to schedule an appointment at their local dealership to have the unsafe airbag replaced free of charge.

BMW airbag recall

Takata once held an estimated 20 percent of the airbag market and many other automakers including Chrysler, Ford, Honda Nissan and Toyota were caught up in the disaster that is believed to have resulted in more than 100 million cars being recalled around the world.

In total, 33 people have died as a result of faulty Takata airbags, including 24 in the US. The most recent fatality occurred in 2022 when the airbag in a 2002 Honda Accord ruptured, hurling shrapnel into the face of the driver in Kentucky. The car in question had been under recall for 11 years at that point and Honda says it had made over 300 attempts to contact the owner via phone, email and post.

Most common BMW X5 problems

When it comes to cars, it is essential to remember that numerous issues can arise if you are unaware of what you are getting yourself into, especially when it comes to expensive vehicles like BMWs. Getting into the common issues of the X5 should therefore be your top priority when buying one.

As with any model that has been in production for decades, some of its model years are more likely to have issues, so let’s take a look:

1. Engine stalling

The 2011 BMW X5’s power and agility make for a pleasurable driving experience. In contrast, an abrupt engine stall can ruin the driving experience. This problem appears in some 2011 model year units and is regarded as the most severe flaw in the BMW X5.

Some BMW X5 models stalled at low speeds, which frequently happened at low accelerations, even though the vehicle could stall at much higher accelerations. Either way, if the car shuts off while driving but turns back on , it’s a stressful experience for most drivers on the road, to say the least.

Sometimes, the owners towed their BMW X5 because they could not restart their engines when they stalled. BMW admitted that the engine of the 2011 BMW X5 had a flaw that caused it to stall or seize unexpectedly.

2. Water leakage problem

The BMW X5 sunroof is one of the most popular features but has both advantages and disadvantages. Unfortunately, the sunroof on the 2008 BMW X5 has some issues with leaks that often make water leak into the interior of the car.

On the plus side, it lets in light and can be opened to allow for proper ventilation inside the vehicle.

However, there is a disadvantage: the sunroof allows water from the outside to enter, causing damage to the vehicle’s interior. Usually, drain tubes keep water from pooling on the sunroof. However, the tubes in many 2008 BMW X5 models can leak water into the vehicle’s cabin.

Furthermore, several owners have reported that water frequently leaks into the front passenger seat, causing damage to the electrical system.

3. Water pump failure

Because of its electric water pump , the powerful engine of the 2013 BMW X5 remains cool even when operating at full engine load.

On the other hand, a water pump failure can activate the supplementary fan, which can continue to run even after it is no longer needed. It’s essential to look for water pump failure symptoms before purchasing the X5 because of this issue.

This issue is not limited to the 2013 BMW X5, and this problem has also appeared in several 2011-2012 models. It is critical to repair a faulty pump as soon as possible so that the engine is not harmed by running too long and heating up.

4. Transmission problems

The BMW X5 gearbox supplies the engine with enough power to keep the SUV running. Driving becomes significantly more complicated if one of the SUV’s parts fails.

A severe transmission failure can activate the BMW X5’s safe mode, which allows it to operate at a lower performance level to avoid damage. The X5 models have continuously variable transmissions ( CVT ), which have occasionally proven problematic. As for the regular automatic gearbox, it was reported to be prone to slipping between gears and feature harsh gear shifts down the line.

The mechatronic sensor may fail without warning in some BMW X5 2011 model years, and the transmission can change without acknowledging the sensor inputs.

There have been other transmission problems with the BMW X5. Some 2012 BMW X5 cars develop vibration issues as the transfer case wears out. Many 2006 BMW X5 vehicles can abruptly change gears while moving at a modest pace, and fixing these gearbox issues could be expensive.

5. Oil leakage

BMW X5 cars from 2009 and 2013 experienced issues with oil leaks. Oil leaks in vehicles are now a frequent issue on various automotive forums. According to reports, the owners have dealt with significant oil spills.

Others who used the SUV complained that it drained too much oil or leaked everywhere. The issue gets resolved after changing the faulty timing covers and alternator bracket.

6. Faulty airbags

The BMW X5’s airbags are another problem. About 0.2 million vehicles were affected by BMW’s recall of the X5 in 2008. The X5 had a defective front seat person detection mat, which prevented the front airbag from deploying even in a severe collision. Affected models were all members of the infamous Takata airbag recall that dealt with the issue of faulty airbag inflators.

Additionally, BMW promised to fix the broken sensor and even increased the X5’s warranty to ten years. A significant airbag recall also affected BMW X5 cars from 2001 to 2003. In some circumstances, the front airbag would rupture and burst.

Worst BMW X5 years to avoid

The BMW X5 is a high-end SUV that can tow anything from boats to compact campers thanks to its capable engines, but the mentioned issues might make it seem like a bad purchase. That is until you can confidently answer the question – what are the worst BMW X5 years?

The worst BMW X5 years are 2008 and 2011, but we’ve made a list of all the badly-rated years below:

Let’s explore a bit more about these model years through their reported problems to make sure you’ll be making a well-informed decision when buying one.

First-generation X5 (2001-2003 model years)

First off, there have been a lot of reports about the engine’s timing chain in these particular automobiles. As a result, the engine abruptly stalled on the highway, causing the driver problems.

Next, after 60,000 miles of driving, the engine’s head gasket fails, and coolant and engine oil leak into the engine. In addition, changing the head gasket is one of the priciest engine maintenance tasks.

In addition, some minor but significant problems are worth mentioning, including coolant leakage from the radiator, power windows, and thrust rod breaks.

Second-generation X5 (2008-2009 and 2011-2012 model years)

The second-generation BMW X5’s biggest problem is engine failure. The BMW X5’s sudden engine stopping, no cranking, etc., were regular and prevalent.

Sometimes it led to the need to replace the entire engine, which cost over $7,000. In addition, the problems with the BMW X5 were mainly unfixable, which made maintenance and restoration nearly hard.

The second-generation BMW X5 was reported to have several fire-catching incidents, which is a cause for concern. It is, therefore, wise to hold off on purchasing a second-generation BMW X5. The worst problem for this generation of the BMW was the engine completely stalling which mostly occurred for 2011 models.

Most BMW X5 cars sold during this generation were recalled. Fifty-four recalls in all were reported from 2009 to 2012.

Third-generation X5 (2013 model year)

It was extremely rare to find flaws in the third-generation BMW X5. As a result, recalls were limited to 11 from 2014 to 2017.

These recalls resulted from high gas consumption, battery draining, EGR cooler leaking, DPF filter clogging, coolant oil gasket leakage, and other issues. However, the majority of these problems are easily repairable and replaceable. As a result, there were fewer complaints about the third-generation BMW X5, and 2013 was the worst-rated model year here due to severe issues with the engine cooling and transmission.

What are the best BMW X5 years to buy?

A BMW X5 has a typical life expectancy of 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, if you purchase a bad model year, you may have to spend a lot of money on repairs to get it to 150,000 to 200,000 miles. As a result, such versions may be unsatisfactory.

To make the car worthwhile, you should get to 150,000 to 200,000 miles without having to make costly repairs. Choose a dependable model year if you want your BMW X5 to last long without significant repairs.

Below are some of the best years of the BMW X5;

All of those years have had few reported problems and recalls, which is quite impressive given their age. If you want something newer, 2015 to 2019 are all excellent choices. BMW X5s from 2016, 2018, and 2019 are notable model years with few recalls and complaints. Among the best options, we can narrow down the selection to two of the best-rated models – the 2000 and 2016 BMW X5.

2000 BMW X5

For the 2000 BMW X5, drivers and former owners didn’t have much to say related to its issues. It turned out to be one of the most reliable models with a decent life expectancy often exceeding 200,000 miles for both diesel and petrol engines.

Among the reported 2000 BMW X5 issues , you’ll rarely find anything serious as mostly problems with windows and electrical settings were reported to NHTSA. So, it makes the best option for an early-stage X5 on the used car market if you are willing to go for an older model.

2016 BMW X5

As for more recent X5 models, the 2016 one seems like a great option with high reliability rating as it only had some slight issues with the wheel hubs. Of course, that’s not such a meaningless issue either, but at least you won’t have to worry about it affecting your engine or transmission as long as you get it repaired on time.

Is the BMW X5 worth buying?

The BMW X5 is one of the best budget-friendly luxury touring and adventure options. Even though many years of this series experienced massive and fatal issues, including engine failure, it proved a reliable vehicle.

Given that BMW got its act together around the 2014 model year and up, significant problems such as engine overheating should no longer be a major issue with the newer BMW X5 models.

Though there are some model years to avoid, the BMW X5 is a dependable midsize SUV that has become more affordable in recent years.

After conducting extensive research and inspection of the target vehicle, you can purchase a second-hand or used BMW X5. Furthermore, for the most dependable use, you can use this article to avoid some specific years of BMW X5 from a different generation.

Choosing between the sporty Porsche Cayenne and the refined Audi Q5 ? Our guide dives into the specifics of each model, pointing out the years that stand as benchmarks of quality and those best left alone.

What is the biggest problem with BMW X5?

The biggest problem with the BMW X5 is the engine stalling. This problem appears in some 2011 model year units and is regarded as the most severe flaw in the BMW X5. Some BMW X5 models stalled at low speeds, frequently occurring at low accelerations, even though the vehicle could stall at much higher accelerations.

Which BMW X5 engine is most reliable?

The most reliable BMW X5 engine is a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder in the 7 Series, X5, and X6 models. It has excellent performance and fuel economy and is widely regarded as very reliable.

BMW 760Li Yachtline Concept ( 2002 )

Bmw 760li yachtline concept.

The BMW E65 is the chassis designation for the fourth generation 7 Series full-size luxury sedan produced by BMW. The E65 was the first BMW chassis series to use different chassis numbers for its several different variants such as the E66/E67/E68, which formed the Long-Wheelbase, BMW High Security and the BMW Hydrogen 7 models respectively.

Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001 alongside the BMW E53 X5 4.6is, the BMW E65 7 Series replaced the BMW 7 Series (E38) after production of that model ended in July 2001. In order to produce the E65 7 Series and other future models the BMW plant at Dingolfing was retooled at a cost of approximately €500,000,000.

Upon release the new 7 Series was met with sharp criticism for its controversial looks as well as the steep learning curve presented by the new iDrive system. So unimpressed was the market with the new car that sales of remaining E38 stock increased markedly after the launch. Despite the initial quality problems and customer gripes the E65 7 Series became the best-selling generation of this full-size luxury sedan, further enhanced by a facelift in 2006.

After a 7 year production run the BMW E65 was replaced by the BMW 7 Series (F01) in late 2008.

Initial release

Development for the BMW E65 7 Series began in early 1996, and production specifications were frozen in January 1999. The design of the BMW E65 7 Series was patented 16 November 2000; development ended in mid-2001. The car was first launched in Europe 17 November 2001 and then appeared in US and other markets in the (northern) spring of 2002. Early BMW E65 7 Series models had many problems mainly due to the functionality of the iDrive system and the associated electronics systems. Thus, BMW repurchased a substantial amount of 2002-03 7 Series cars in the U.S., and BMW of North America also extended the factory warranty on 2002-03 BMW E65 7 Series models from the 4-Year/50,000-Mile (80,000 km) coverage to the 6-Year/100,000-Mile (160,000 km) factory warranty. However, UK models were still protected by their original 3-Year/Unlimited-Miles warranty.

Exterior design

Under the direction of Chris Bangle, BMW's Design Chief at the time, the arrival of the BMW E65 7 Series heralded a new styling era for BMW. The design of the new car contrasted dramatically with the styling on the BMW E38 7 Series. The BMW E65 7 Series' two-level rear end styling with separate rear fenders for a "bustle-back" boot lid was derisively known as the "Bangle Butt" by critics. In fact, van Hooydonk's original sketch in 1998 for the BMW E65 was much more of a radical sleek fastback, but the final E65 profile was toned down considerably to a more conventional three-box sedan. Bangle was widely criticised for the radical departure of the styling from the BMW E38 7 Series. He was however supported by the BMW board of directors, who wanted to move BMW's image into the future. Dan Neil of The Los Angeles Times named the new 7-series one of the '50 Worst Cars of All Time', but Bangle argued that BMW's established design language was exhausted. Despite the initially poor public reception of the two-level rear end, the design was later incorporated by Mercedes-Benz into the design of the W221 generation S-Class in 2006 and also by Hyundai in the fourth-generation Azera.

Dimensionally the E65 7 Series 45mm longer, 38mm wider and 60mm taller than the E38. The wheelbase was increased by 60mm over the outgoing model. Despite these increased dimensions the E65 7 Series is only 15 kg heavier than the E38.

Interior design

The interior of the BMW E65 7 Series features a generous amount of genuine wood trim & was redesigned to address both the driver and passenger, unlike the traditional driver-focussed instrument panel in the BMW E38 7 Series. BMW removed the traditional console mounted gear selector replacing it with a steering-column mounted stalk, in favour of two cup holders. The seats adjustment controls were moved from their traditional place on the side of the seat base to the inside of the raised central console, which several reviewers complained about the unnecessarily complicated nature of the controls. Peeling paint and textured materials are a well documented problem, so BMW addressed this issue by using still higher quality paint in the LCI model.

Compared to the outgoing E38 model, the E65 7 Series has more shoulder room in the front and the rear, while headroom in the rear has been increased for greater comfort.

The BMW E65 7 Series was the most technically advanced production vehicle BMW had ever produced at the time. As the flagship model, it introduced a large number of new technologies that were eventually carried over to the next generation of BMW's. The E65 7 Series introduced a number of new technologies such as:

  • Valvetronic engine control (Variable valve lift replaced throttle butterflies for normal running conditions for added response, efficiency and power).
  • World introduction of Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) active Anti-roll bars on a sedan (alternative designations: Dynamic Drive, Adaptive Drive). ARS is a revolutionary system that almost completely eliminates body roll when cornering. It employs active anti-roll bars which use a hydraulic servo in the middle to actively counteract body roll. This results in increased comfort for passengers, and when coupled with Electronic Damper Control-Continuous (EDC-C) it raises comfort levels to new heights.
  • Self levelling air suspension on rear axle for increased comfort (optional)
  • Electronic Damper Control-Continuous (EDC-C)
  • Introduction of two fibre optic bus systems, MOST Bus (Media Orientated System Transport) and "Byteflight" (safety systems bus). These busses operate at 22.5Mbps and 10Mbps respectively.
  • The first introduction of the dedicated 'Body-Controller Area Network' K-CAN bus system operating at 100kbps, This replaced the slower (9.6kbps) I,K and P-Busses used on previous vehicles.
  • The first introduction of BMW's revolutionary iDrive system, the first fully integrated series production vehicle systems controller.
  • World's first infinitely variable intake manifold.
  • World introduction of electronic adaptive headlight technology.
  • World's first 6-speed automatic transmission in a sedan.
  • Optional Automatic Soft Close system minimized the force required to close the doors, and would completely close them if improperly closed. This system also extended to the trunk lid, but unlike the door system was standard on all models.
  • Electromechanical parking brake. Not only could this system apply the parking brake in stop-and-go traffic situations to reduce tedium, but it could also automatically apply the parking brake after the ignition was switched off.
  • First BMW with DVD-based GPS Automotive navigation system.
  • First BMW to feature Bi-Xenon (HID) headlights.
  • First BMW to feature 'Push-Button-Start'. The rectangular key-fob was inserted into a slot next to the steering wheel and the driver would push a button to start the engine. This method of starting the car would be the precursor for all future BMW models.
  • Radar based Active Cruise Control (ACC).

The BMW E65 7 Series introduced the iDrive control concept. The system was built on hardware similar to the MKIV system used by BMW in the late 90's but featured a brand new interface and central control knob. Many of the functions such as climate, navigation, seat heating, telephony and car settings were incorporated into a single system allowing centralised control of those functions. iDrive was nicknamed "I Don't Know Drive" because of the steep learning curve and complicated menu structures, with some sources claiming that it would take several hours to become familiar with the system. Complaints ranged from the number of steps required to complete simple tasks such as selecting a radio frequency to getting "lost" in the deep menu system. iDrive saw several updates during the production run to address complaints raised by owners. The first generation of the system relied on CD media for map data. In 2003 BMW updated the hardware to read DVD media, added a substantially faster processor and the ability to display maps in birds-eye view. Also added in 2003 were a 'Menu' and 'Customisable' button below the control knob. This was done to address the complaints of 'getting lost' in the menus. The last major update to the system came with the LCI model in 2005 which added buttons to the radio (ASK unit) that enabled skipping tracks or radio stations as well as a mode button to change operating modes. A larger, brighter display was added and faster, more advanced navigation hardware was introduced. The system also gained the capability to control a MP3 capable CD Changer. The interface was streamlined to resemble the iDrive CCC system. Although it may appear similar in function to the CCC iDrive (introduced in the BMW E60 5 Series and BMW E63/64 6 Series), the iDrive system in the E65/66 is unique to only that model. The system started a trend and today most car manufacturers offer in-car systems built around a central control knob (Audi Multi Media Interface, Mercedes-Benz Comand APS etc), an idea first brought to consumers by BMW in the E65 7 Series.

Depending on the country of sale the E65 7 Series came with a variety of Standard Equipment. All markets had iDrive as standard, although Navigation was optional in certain markets. Climate control was standard, although dual zone climate control was offered as an option. Seating options ranged between basic, sport and comfort seats. The basic seats include 14-way electric adjustment (12-way for passenger) and 4-way lumbar adjustment. Comfort seats include 20-way electric adjustment, 4-way lumbar adjustment, two piece articulated back-rests, adjustable neck support, electric headrests and memory options available on both driver and passenger sides. The different seat variations together with options for heating, cooling and massaging made for a bewildering number of configurable options.

Other optional equipment included TV reception (digital TV in facelift models), Dynamic Xenon headlamps, Vertical side and rear electric sun blinds, Front and rear heated or ventilated seats, Comfort electric rear seats with memory (featuring 18-way adjustment as apposed to 20-way at the front), Rear telephone, Refrigerated cool box, Separate rear air conditioning, Rear seat entertainment with separate LCD and iDrive controller, this gave rear passengers the control of the following entertainment features: 6 disc DVD multi-changer, 6 disc CD multi-changer (or iPod in facelift models), TV, DAB Tuner, Bluetooth Telephony and Satellite Navigation. Other options included, Electric front and rear soft-close doors, Automatic tailgate, Keyless access and go (Comfort Access), Adaptive damper control (EDC), Dynamic anti-roll bars (ARS), Glass sunroof, Premium LOGIC 7 sound system.

Some European models in colder climates had the option of a Webasto parking heater, which allows the vehicle to be warmed up and pre-heated by means of the remote control before the vehicle is started, this has the advantage of de-icing the vehicle and making the interior more bearable in cold weather. Likewise in hotter climates it is possible to remotely start the engine for the purpose of activating the air conditioning to cool the interior of the vehicle before the vehicle is entered.

Long-Wheelbase 7 Series (E66)

Long-Wheelbase versions of the BMW E65 7 Series were introduced in the end of 2002. Long-Wheelbase models only featured a longer body which meant extra legroom in the rear seats. The height, width and bootspace of the car is the same. In 2002, early Long-Wheelbase models included the 730Li, 735Li, 745Li, and the 760Li and 740Li was later introduced in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Long-Wheelbase models were 140mm (5.5 in) longer compared to the normal E65 7 Series models.

2005 Facelift (Life-Cycle-Impulse)

BMW started work on a facelift for the E65 7 Series in 2003, and was introduced on all BMW E65 7 Series models in 2005. Going on sale in March of that year, the facelift included several new engines, new exterior styling and interior upholstery colours as well as some new optional extras. The majority of changes to the car were technical in nature. Exterior styling changes included a restyled front and rear bumper and a slightly larger and a more curved grill which was in line with the new BMW design language. The headlights were also completely restyled, while the rear lights featured changes to the trunk-lid-mounted section which was redesigned to create the appearance of a single light unit as (opposed to the outgoing two part light design). Overall the restyled front end served to give the car a more sporty appearance. In the rear, the trunk lid styling was subtly enhanced with the trunk release button being moved out of sight and a thinner, more elegant looking chrome strip flowing into the re-designed lights. Interior changes included improved material and paint quality as well as a restyled steering wheel. The climate control panel was revised slightly. Overall the changes to the interior were minor and served mostly to address quality concerns.

I LOVE the individual series cars. A nice way to distinguish your ride. I am a fan of the nautical theme but the thing I'd really like to get the details on is your front phone. It looks like it can charge in the front trey. Is that an after-market modification and if so, then could you provide some details as to who may have done it and do they have an adapter what would work with a Blackberry or iPhone?

2-Run-flat tires do not come equipped with a spare wheel and tire. Driving over rough or damaged road surfaces, as well as debris, curbs and other obstacles, can cause serious damage to wheels, tires and suspension parts. This is more likely to occur with low-profile tires, which provide less cushioning between the wheel and the road. Be careful to avoid road hazards and reduce your speed, especially if your vehicle is equipped with low-profile tires.

3-Cruise control is not a substitute for the driver's own responsibility in adjusting speed and otherwise controlling the vehicle. After evaluating the road, traffic and visibility conditions, the driver must decide whether and how the system is to be used.

WHAT IS xDRIVE?

Bmw’s intelligent all-wheel drive for confidence in every condition..

  • Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
  • Dynamic Stability Control
  • Dynamic Traction Control

BMW's xDrive helps you navigate the road on your own terms from hot summer drives to navigating a polar vortex. The xDrive system uses your driving data to automatically relay power to individual wheels for optimal traction and control. Meaning you can still conquer every corner in any season.

When you hit a slick stretch of road, your natural instinct is to steer against the slip – and that can make a skid even worse. xDrive’s Dynamic Stability Control takes over when traction loss is detected by applying each individual brake as needed in milliseconds. That means more stability for your BMW, and more driving confidence for you.

The winter’s harshest days can sometimes lead to a situation where you’re stuck in snow. Dynamic Traction Control, a part of the Dynamic Stability Control system, provides the necessary wheel spin and brake adjustments to keep you moving forward without losing power. This action keeps you in complete control of your BMW, especially in exceptional situations.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO DRIVE?

Drivetrains designed for maximum power and performance..

A wintry scene with snow-capped mountains and a challenging road
