BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO BIMINI ISLANDS AND POINTS OF INTEREST

Bimini is the nearest Bahamian island (two islands) to the USA, barely 50 miles from Miami, it’s a very short trip and only a few hours by yacht from Miami. A tiny island of the Bahamas, Bimini is just 7 miles long and barely 700 feet wide at its widest point. Bimini is the western most island in the Bahamas and the closest foreign island to the US mainland and has previously been recognized mainly for the famous Hemingway era.

Whether you come with the family, as a couple, or single for bar hopping, casinos, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, tanning on the beaches, or relaxing in a hammock in the cool breeze, the Bahamas will leave you speechless and satisfied. A US Passport or birth certificate is required when traveling to the Bahamas.

BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO NASSAU, HARBOUR CAY, BERRY ISLANDS

The more ‘popular’ areas of the Bahamas begins in the Berry Islands, while on your way to Nassau, which are low-lying and unique with few inhabitants, fantastic fishing and the feeling of being on a different planet. Many groups make Chub Cay their first stop, then go north…or start in Great Stirrup Cay and go Southwards. Either way, even on a power-yacht, it will take a week or longer to when traveling by yacht. If leaving from Miami, charterers will cross the Gulf Stream with its seasonal uncertainties, with slight chances of the charter being delayed a day or so, if the seas are too rough, but this is not normally the case and the journey is well worth it!! Most our charter guests prefer to fly into Nassau, and board their sailing or motor yacht at the Atlantis Hotel and Marina, beginning their cruise in Bahamas, avoiding the seven-hour delivery across the Atlantic Ocean. Other charterers, especially the bare-boaters, like to fly into Marsh Harbour in the Abacos and rent a charter boat from there and explore the Sea of Abaco.

The Atlantis Hotel Casino and Resort is the largest and most amazing resort in all of Bahamas, offering 5-Star amenities for all ages including a theme waterpark, the Caribbean’s largest aquarium, interactive dolphin lagoon, world-class casino and spa, couture brand shopping center, and over a dozen fine dining restaurants. Many charters begin and end their charter at the Atlantis Marina, which provides just enough excitement and action for a couple of days, while other days are spent exploring the more remote islands.

BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO EXUMAS AND ABACOS

The Exumas chain of 365 islands (or cays) in the Bahamas, starts about 35 nm South of Nassau and runs about 120 nm South from Allen Cay, all the way to Georgetown that has an airport with regular scheduled flights. This is considered the most sought after location in the Bahamas with crystal-clear waters, swimming pigs, superb diving, friendly petting sharks, snorkeling, fishing and lots of neat little bays and coves to anchor out. Exumas is a special strip of private islands where one can find a lone Tiki beach bar in the middle of seemingly nowhere…in paradise! Be sure to visit Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, which some consider the most breathtaking place is the Exumas. http://www.exumapark.org. There are some great itineraries that start and end either in Nassau or Staniel Cay and cover the upper Exumas, Cat Island, Eleuthera, and Harbour island.

For the even more adventurous, a Georgetown pick-up and a route that includes the “Out-Islands” of the Bahamas is even more attractive for those of us who like remote and mostly uninhabited islands. The few locals you encounter are very friendly and polite. This route includes the islands of Rum Cay, Conception, San Salvador, Long Island, Acklins, Crooked Islands, and Mayaguana. The island of Great Inagua has a fine National Park and nature reserve with the largest population of West Indian Flamingoes, Parrots, and other bird species. Little Inagua has a large population of feral donkeys and goats that were originally left there (or escaped from) the numerous wrecks caused by the Inagua reef.

In the Northern Bahamas, the Sea of Abaco, with its three “major towns” of Marsh Harbour, Hopetown and Coopers Town and ringed by Green Turtle Cay, Treasure Cay and many others, constitutes a small isolated area with its own special culture and values. The Abacos are especially known for calm waters, warm breezes and panoramic beauty that make this 120-mile–long chain of islands a boating and sailing paradise. It’s not just the sea that attracts travelers from around the world. Those who prefer to explore by land will find championship golf courses on Treasure Cay, charming colonial towns on Green Turtle and Elbow Cays, and countless hotels, restaurants and bars throughout.

In summary, the Bahamas is not just Bimini and the casinos of Freeport, Lucaya, Nassau and Paradise Island. The real Bahamas can be seen only by a private charter boat and remains one of the most unbelievable recreational cruising grounds in the world.

Charters from Miami to the Bahamas

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

We probably get one or two phone calls or emails a day from clients looking to get from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to “The Bahamas”. OK, let’s just forget for a minute that there are over 700 islands in the Bahamas and that yachts are the most expensive way to travel ANYWHERE.

Nemesis power boat

1. The Bahamas group of Islands are some of the most beautiful in the world. Some of our favorites are the Exumas, the Abacos, the Out-Islands, Nassau (if you’re into cities, shopping and casinos), Freeport (if you’re into cities, shopping and casinos), Bimini, if you’re into sports-fishing, The Berry Islands if you’re in Miami and want total isolation to unwind for a few days, they are about 100 miles from Miami.

For in-depth information on the various islands please check our Bahamas section .

2. There is no ferry service from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas at all. There is a small catamaran ferry service  that is called Balearia Express Ferries that leaves from Fort Lauderdale and goes to Freeport and back.

3. There are inter-island ferries and mail-boat services available once you get to the Bahamas, both private and government operated. They run on regular schedules but these schedules are approximate and they don’t run every day. You can go here for valuable information  regarding ferries in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Yacht anchored

Remember that although Bimini is only 40 miles from the mainland you have to cross the Gulf Stream which is notoriously treacherous when there is any kind of brisk wind. Bimini is a sports fishing center and there’s not much else to do except fishing.

A day trip to Bimini on a small or medium sized motor yacht can cost between $2k and $5K depending on the number of guests and the size of the boat. There is a 12 passenger maximum for most charter yachts. You can also fly to Bimini by air taxi.

5. Bareboat sailing in the Bahamas is limited to the Abacos, contact us for details .

6. When planning a sailing or yachting vacation in the Bahamas, it’s always better to fly into the island or group of islands you’d like to explore. For example, if you’d like to explore the Exumas, fly into Nassau or Staniel Cay and have the yacht pick you up there. If you’d like to explore the out islands fly into Georgetown. For the Abacos, fly into Marsh harbour.

DON’T use a charter yacht for transportation, private yachts are great for vacations but make lousy and expensive ferries.  DO use a yacht for a vacation experience, the beaches are marvelous and the diving superb.  Have a GREAT vacation.

Before starting your  private yacht charter to Bimini Island, The Bahamas , allow us to get you acquainted with this tiny but fascinating island. It’s divided in 3 small Islands: North, East, and South Bimini, with North and South Bimini being the largest. Also, the name is derived from these 2 Islands (Bi Mini).

The North side  is only 7 miles (11km) long and 700 feet (200m) wide. You only need a golf cart to move around and enjoy the shops, restaurants, and bars.

With only 182 people living on the South side you will encounter South Bimini Airport, a few small hotels, and private homes you can rent.  The island is famous for Big Game Fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.

South Bimini  is more relaxing whereas  North Bimini has more activity  and is recommended by us. You have options of Marinas where to dock, from Bimini Big Game Marina to Resorts World Bimini Resort and Marina.

SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING AT SS SAPONA SHIPWRECK

The  SS Sapona Shipwreck  was a concrete cargo vessel built by Henry Ford during WWII. In 1926 it was destroyed by a hurricane. Today it still sits on the South side of Bimini Island, 3 miles from the shore. You can reach the Sapona shipwreck by your chartered boat and enjoy snorkeling reaching 20 feet deep. The beauty of the clear ocean makes it such a splendid landmark to enjoy a variety of sea fishes and sea creatures. Feel free to take amazing pictures while jumping off the shipwreck.

For scuba diving we recommend  Neal Watson Bimini Scuba Center . They are professional, patient and can accommodate divers of all levels.

GOLF CART HOP ON, HOP OFF

Bimini is so small that renting a car is neither necessary nor an option. You can make your way around North Bimini in  less than 30 minutes by golf cart.  There are more than 10 golf cart rental companies on the island, making it easy to rent one for the day.   Do as the locals and take a short, leisurely drive to the corner store, or to eat at one of the many restaurants (pass by Bimini  Big John’s Bar & Grill) , head to the beach, or try your luck at the casino. The locals are incredibly nice and welcoming, always ready to give advice for the best local food and live music. There is also a daily ferry service between North and South Bimini, though you will find more to do on the North side.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO BIMINI

Typical departure from Miami is early  in the morning around 9am, for timely arrival in Bimini to clear customs ( passports needed ). You should be ready to pick up your golf cart at the marina by 2pm. We will make sure marina dockage and golf cart are reserved so you can enjoy and relax from the moment you arrive. Drive around the Island and pass by  Joe’s Conch Shack  have their famous conch salad and you may even catch them cleaning and prepping it (see picture below).  Conch  is the most famous seafood dish in Bimini so you may also want to try Stuarts delicious conch salad.

You can go around the island and stop by the beaches for a swim, stop by a shack and enjoy a local Kalik beer while enjoying the view of pastel colored wooden homes and breathe in the fresh ocean air. Once you finished exploring it’s time to go back to the marina, relax on your boat and get ready for dinner. You may choose a fancy dinner at  Sabor restaurant  inside the Hilton Resorts World Bimini or a local laid back option like  Edith’s Pizza , which serves a lot more than pizza. Finish your night at the  Casino  at Hilton Resorts World Bimini. Or, if it’s a weekend, you may relax by the marina listening to live band music. Or, one of our weekend favorites is  Big John’s Bar & Grill,  which was just remodeled in April 2017

Let’s get the engine started and move the boat towards the area where  dolphins  like to hang around. If we’re lucky, you will be able to see some and even swim with them. We just ask that you keep in mind they are wild mammals and you should always take precautions.

We will mostly likely stop by the SSS Sapona Shipwreck by South Bimini, where you may enjoy amazing  snorkeling . If your chartered yacht is equipped with a  jet ski , this is the time to hop on one and take it around the shipwreck, jump in the water to snorkel and capture beautiful pictures to share back home.

On 2-night trips, we can take you to  a private island called Cat Cay , located only 10 miles away from Bimini. Here visitors are permitted to moor for no more than 24 hours. Enjoy some fine cuisine at Nauticat Restaurant or Bu’s Bar for a more relaxed atmosphere.

The island is managed by Cat Cay Yacht Club and non-members may only visit accompanied by members. For a private tour for membership inquiries or more information, please visit their website.

CHOOSING A BOAT

Now let’s choose the  perfect boat for you . It all depends how many guests are joining you and if you are planning to sleep on the boat or in a hotel.

We can help you choose from a medium size vessel like a  54’ Sea Ray Sundancer  with 2 rooms or a  64’ Azimut  with 3 staterooms. For fishing aficionados, we have a  50’ or a 60’ Hatteras  fishing boat so you can enjoy Big Game Fishing.

Do you have a bigger budget in mind? We recommend a  75’ Sunseeker Manhattan  which is ultra comfortable and luxurious equipped with all the amenities you may need. If you decide you rather stay overnight in a hotel than your chartered vessel, we can recommend one of our partner’s resorts.

Fishing charters are permitted for no more than 6 guests by law.

Miami to Bimini Yacht Charter Itinerary

Day 1: Alice Town & Bimini Bay Marina

Bimini Bay Marina will be our destination on the first day of our Bimini & Berrys charter. It’s just a 2 1/2 hour ride from Miami and where we will clear customs in the Bahamas. Guests will be able to spend the afternoon visiting Alice Town and enjoying miles of deserted beach on the north shore.

Day 2: Sapon shipwreck & Chub Cay

Leaving North Bimini, we will make a stop at the wreck of the cargo Sapona for some snorkeling before heading across the Great Bahama Bank for 3 hours run to the recently rebuilt Chub Cay Club, now one of the Bahamas most modern marinas, located at the southwest tip of the Berry Islands.

Day 3: White Cay

Leaving Chub Cay, a short 90 minutes cruise around the southernmost Berry Islands will take us to White Cay, in the central Berry Islands, often considered one of the most attractive anchorages in this part of the Bahamas. It is within “tender distance” of the 600′ deep Blue Hole on nearby Hoffman’s Cay and many sandy beaches to explore for a day, or more if desired.

Day 4: Great Harbor Cay

On day four of your charter, we will continue northbound towards Great Harbor Cay and anchor off one of the most beautiful beaches in the Northwestern Bahamas. Miles of pristine white sand and turquoise waters await you as well as the Sugar Beach Caves.

Day 5: Bimini Bay Resort

Depending on our guests’ desires we can spend an extra day in Great Harbor Cay or a day in Bimini at the all-new Bimini Bay Resort and Marina. We have included a blank day in the itinerary just in case you decide to spend more time somewhere along the way… This is your yacht charter after all!

Pig Beach Bahamas Swimming Pigs

The Bahamas is best known for its beautiful turquoise waters, the swimming pigs, amazing fishing, and great island vibes. Get luxurious by staying in 5-star hotels and dining at amazing restaurants or keep it casual and enjoy delicious local food and experiences. Or do a little of both!

When traveling to the Bahamas from Miami, you have a few options. You can go by boat, by ferry or by plane, let’s dive into these!

Best ways to get from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas

The best option by far is by plane. Flying into the Bahamas is going to be all around the best option because it’s cheap, quick, and convenient. You might be surprised to find out that a flight from Miami to Nassau is about a 35-minute trip. It’s incredibly close, at only about 180 miles away.

When flying, you literally take off are in the air for 10 minutes and then start your descent. It’s painfully quick! With this being said, I truly believe that flying is your best option. There are quite a few airlines, specifically   Jetblue , Bahamasair , American Airlines , Silver Airways , and Frontier doing multiple daily flights from Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

In addition to the quick flight time, you can enjoy a beautiful view from the plane of The Bahamas’ beautiful 50 shades of blue waters. It is truly an enjoyable experience and gets me every time. I absolutely love flying to Nassau from Miami for the convenience and the beauty, it’s a win-win.

Once you land in Nassau from Miami, it’s a relatively quick process. You’ll pull up to the gate quite quickly, and customs is usually fast. I would say if you aren’t checking a bag you can get from the plane to outside the airport in about 15 minutes. During the busy season, you may find some lines at immigration, but usually, you’ll be able to just fly through and you’ll be ready to start your vacation in no time!

3 Ways to get to Nassau, the Bahamas from Florida via Plane

  • Commercial Flight (round trip cost $200 per person) via Jetblue , Bahamasair , American Airlines , Silver Airways and Frontier .
  • Semiprivate Flight (roundtrip cost $600 + per person) via Golden Wings Charter or Tropix Air.
  • Private Flight (roundtrip cost starting at $4,000 for the plane) contact me to inquire.

2 Ways to get to Staniel Cay, Exuma from Bahamas for a day trip

  • Semiprivate Flight via Makers Air or Staniel Air (roundtrip cost $600 + per person)

Miami to Nassau by Boat

Nassau is approximately 180 miles from Miami. You can surely take a boat ride over; it will take you about 8 hours. The journey via boat from Miami will require a skilled captain and a boat that can handle the Atlantic oceans. Depending on the weather conditions it could be quite a rocky and long ride.

If you are sailing, this journey will take you about 3 days, and you’ll want to make a few stops at other islands and Cays on your way over.

If you are planning to stay in Nassau for a while, then a boat is definitely doable, but you must consider that is much more expensive than flying, it is a long journey that is likely more uncomfortable. If you are popping over to Nassau from Miami for a quick trip you should not consider this option as it’s not doable in that time frame.

If you are just trying to get to The Bahamas, and don’t care about what island, Bimini is about 50 miles away from Miami and can be accessed much quicker for a day trip, probably 1-2 hour boat ride. If you are just trying to escape for a quick Caribbean Island fix, you should consider hiring a boat to take you to Bimini.

Miami to Nassau by Ferry

Currently, there is not a ferry coming to Nassau from Miami. The only option of a ferry ride to the Bahamas is to Bimini. The ride is about 2 hours long and will cost $100 per person via Baleria . If you are interested in a quick getaway, Bimini will do the trick!

Enjoy a conch salad and a few daiquiris as you enjoy beautiful beaches and great island vibes.

Affordable Trip from Miami to Nassau in 2022

Day trips from Miami to the Bahamas are desirable because of the proximity (about 180 miles), and a quick 35-minute flight. Hit the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas and enjoy the island vibes as you sip a daiquiri, swim with the pigs, and chill out with the locals.

It’s not so much the affordable part that makes this difficult, but rather the convenience part. Of course, it’s doable, and you can pay around $200 for a round trip flight, but once you incorporate airport waiting time, Covid Testing, etc., it becomes not worth it to do a day trip.

The best way to experience the Bahamas at an affordable is to book a 1-night stay in Nassau. You can find Airbnb and hotels for $150 / night, check out my Affordable Beach Rentals in Nassau blog post.  Round trip flights from Miami are about $200 round trip on Jetblue , Bahamasair , American Airlines , Silver Airways , and Frontier . If you can stay one night you can have much more time to explore. My hotel suggestions are Compass Point or Orange Hill .

What to do in the Bahamas?

The Bahamas, stretching over 760 miles and containing over 700 Islands & Cays, offers many beautiful sights and activities. From blue holes to sandbanks, swimming with sharks and pigs, there are so many exciting and life-changing experiences to be had in the Bahamas.

Interacting with tourists daily, I have had hundreds of people tell me that some of these experiences were the “best days of their lives” …their words, not mine! I couldn’t agree more with that statement, and you will forever remember the Bahamas after doing some of these experiences. Check out my Bahamas Bucket List Guide for the 10 best things to do in the Bahamas.

Some of my Favorite things to do in Nassau are a Rose Island Half Day Excursion, exploring and chilling at Love Beach, snorkeling the underwater Atlas Statues at Clifton Pier, enjoying a Daquiri at the Daq Shack, and swinging into Bon Vivants for a delicious coffee!

Additionally, if you are just in town for a few days, you should check out my guides Best Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas and Best Beaches in Nassau, Bahamas . These are affordable, maybe even free activities to do while visiting Nassau.

Pig Beach for a Day Trip from Miami

Can you do Pig Beach on a day trip from Miami? As mentioned previously, planning a day trip from Miami will be quite tight on time and I suggest staying for at least one night in Nassau. There are two options for pigs in Nassau. One is Da Pig Village , they offer a great pig beach tour service and you will get to swim with the pigs and enjoy a beautiful beach.

Your second option is to book a tour to Rose Island with Float Your Boat Bahamas. We offer a half-day excursion with the option to go to Rose Island Pig Beach. This is a fantastic day and if you spend your money on anything in the Bahamas this should be it. This is a private boat experience for just you and your group, we offer transportation, and our captains are locals with the best knowledge.

Our Rose Island Pig Beach Tour includes swimming with the turtles, snorkeling beautiful reefs, swimming with the Rose Island pigs, and exploring the beautiful untouched beaches of Rose Island. This is a day to remember! Usually, about 4 hours and the cost starts at $750. Contact us today to get more info!

Pig Beach Bahamas Swimming Pigs

Is the Bahamas expensive?

The Bahamas is on definitely the higher end of things when it comes to cost and Caribbean islands. Everything is imported and therefore more expensive than in the U.S and other places. Food is one of the most expensive things you will experience when traveling to The Bahamas. You can expect to pay double the price for both groceries and eating out.

You can find some rentals for relatively comparable prices. The Bahamas is a destination for tourists therefore we have high prices here as people are willing to pay the price. Excursions, activities, etc. will all cost about $100 per person minimum.

Transportation in The Bahamas

Once you arrive in The Bahamas, the best way to get around, especially on a time crunch would be to rent a car. There are many car rental places that start around $50 per day. You will be required to pay a $200 refundable deposit and required to fill the gas tank up when you drop off the car.

We have buses and taxis as well, but the buses are inconsistent, and taxis are super expensive. If you are coming on a time crunch, there is no better and more affordable option than renting a car. We do not have services like Uber and Lyft in the Bahamas.

What paperwork will you need for a trip to the airport to go to The Bahamas?

To enter the Bahamas, you will need an approved travel health visa and either a negative antigen test (if vaccinated) or negative PCR test (if unvaccinated) within 3 days of your travel date. Day 0 is the day you take your test. You will need to upload your test results to the travel visa sight. Upon approval, you will be prompted to pay $40. Once you make the payment you will receive your approved travel health visa and will be able to travel to the Bahamas. You will be required to show both your test and your travel visa to an agent at the airline prior to your departure as well as the customs agent when you land in the Bahamas.

Additionally, when you return to the U.S., you will have to take an antigen test within 24 hours of your departure. The U.S requires you to fill out an attestation form and upload your results prior to your departure.

How and where to take the COVID test for The Bahamas

There are testing sites all over The Bahamas, they are easy to access and have reputable testing. You will want to ensure the sites are open prior to going, specifically on Holidays & Sundays. My two recommended testing places are Eden Well & Access Medical.

The Bahamas is a fantastic place to visit, especially if you are traveling from Florida. It is so close and will be an amazing quick trip for you to experience. The more time you have the better, day trips are doable but not recommended. Come stay for a while and enjoy all the best things the Bahamas has to offer, you won’t be disappointed in your choice!

Miami to Nassau: How to Get There

If you are planning a romantic getaway or honeymoon in The Bahamas , one of the first things you need to figure out is how to get there—preferably as quickly as possible. Since Miami is so close to Nassau, it is one of the main departure points for trips to The Bahamas. (The Miami to Nassau distance is just under 200 miles.)

In this article we’ll tell you about all the ways you can get from Miami to Nassau and answer questions like is there a boat from Florida to Nassau? and how far is the flight from Miami to Nassau?

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

Miami to Nassau flights

Miami to Nassau flights are plentiful and very short. How far is the flight from Miami to Nassau? Covering a distance of just 183 miles, the average Miami to Nassau flight time is about an hour.

Nonstop flights on Western Air from Miami to Nassau last just 50 minutes, while nonstop flights on carriers like American, Southwest, and Bahamasair take just a little over an hour.

Prices range for these flights from Miami to Nassau depending on the time of year, but generally average $200-$300 roundtrip. However, you can sometimes find cheaper fares.

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

Miami to Nassau Ferry

There is also a service that provides trips between Florida and The Bahamas by boat. However, it’s not a Miami to Nassau boat trip, but rather Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, which is an island in The Bahamas that is just 53 miles off the coast of Florida. (There used to be a ferry from Miami to Bimini, but that service stopped operating.) You will need to take a shuttle or drive to Fort Lauderdale, about 30 minutes from Miami, to catch this ferry.

The ferry trip from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini in The Bahamas takes about 2 hours, and one-way tickets cost around $100. To go on to Nassau, you’ll need to take a flight there from Bimini, which lasts about 45 minutes but can cost upwards of $1000 depending on the time you’re traveling, so this is definitely not the easiest, fastest, or least expensive way to get from Miami to Nassau.

Atlantis resort in Bahamas

Another way to get to Miami to Nassau by boat is on a sailboat or yacht. You can charter a yacht for about $5000 for the day, and the trip will take about 8-10 hours. On a sailboat, the trip can take about 3 days. While easy and fun, this is the most expensive option (and takes the longest).

The last option for getting from Miami to Nassau by boat is to take one of the many Miami to Nassau cruises that are offered. These range from 2 to 6 nights, and are available on a wide variety of cruise lines. The time that the ship spends at Nassau varies depending on the cruise, but many ships stay in Nassau for a day, then move on to other ports in The Bahamas.

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

On Carnival Cruise Lines’ 3-day cruises to Nassau from Miami, you depart Miami in the afternoon, spend the next day at sea, arrive in Nassau at 8 a.m. and stay there until 5 p.m., then return to Miami, arriving at 8 a.m. the following morning. You can also opt for the 2-day cruise which drops the day at sea; you leave Miami in the afternoon, arrive in Nassau the next morning and spend the day, and arrive in Miami the following morning at 8 a.m.

Sailing from Miami to the Bahamas: What You Need to Know in 2024.

Dreaming of sailing from miami to the bahamas make your trip a success with this comprehensive guide, complete with tips and tricks from experienced sailors (us)..

Sailing from Miami to the Bahamas has marked the starting point of many liveaboard journeys.

Including ours (the international part).

We sailed from Miami to the Bahamas on our sailboat, a Privilege 42 catamaran .

With crystal-clear water, soft white sand, coral reefs and amazing sea-life, Bahamas never fails to impress both eager sailors and hesitant teens aboard .

See some of the amazing places we have visited : Our Destination Posts

Here is our first anchorage in Bimini, right by the official buildings , where the captain entered our vessel into the country.

I was a bit nervous about that darn Gulf Stream crossing , but everything was just fine, and we had a great passage.

So, let me help you do the same.

Before you know it, you will be diving in the blue-green water, just like we did during our passage to the Berry islands .

How long does it take to sail from Miami to the Bahamas?

It takes around 10 hours, at 6-7 knots average speed.

We left Miami on a Thursday, at around 2200 , and reached Bimini the next morning, around 0730 , after around 55 miles of sailing.

Bimini, Bahamas, Anchorage

The closest island group to the US is Bimini.

A small group of islands around 50 miles from Miami . There is a check in point in Bimini , as well as a beautiful, spacious and protected anchorage , for the crew to wait and rest, while the captain of the vessel is completing the check-in .

As most sailors, cruising south , we selected No Name Harbor, Miami, as our starting point.

To minimize night sailing , you can also leave around 03:00 – 04:00 in the morning and arrive in the Bahamas at noon.

Plan your route and check the weather.

Before setting sail, it’s important to plan your route and check the wind and waves forecast.

anchorage at Bimini check in point

That means checking the direction and strength of the wind, as well as the height and period of the waves.

We always use at least two sources (typically Predict Wind and Passage Weather ).

All of our boat gear posts: Boat Gear @ No Texting and Tacking.

Wait for the right wind.

You will have to cross the Gulf Stream . It is perfectly doable and can act in your favor if you wait for a favorable weather window.

A boy on the bow of a sailboat, with the sea horizon in front

The best piece of advice we can give you is to never try to cross the Gulf Stream with a wind from the north.

Winds from the southwest would be perfect, but they don’t happen too often. Many of these drag a storm alongside, if strong enough.

Even with as little as 10-15 knots of wind from the north, the waves will build up, and crossing the Gulf Stream can be dangerous, as well as very uncomfortable .

I am not a big fan of sailing and passages in general, so 15-20 knots of wind is plenty for me. Keep in mind that the wind speed you see on Predict Wind is a good estimate, and gusts are always present. Add 5 knots to whatever we see on the chart.

If sailing with a family , and still at the start of your journey, take it slow and easy, thank me later.

Consider the waves.

When sailing out in the ocean, the swells might seem high, but if they are spaced apart far enough, it will be a comfortable passage.

That space between the waves is the wave period.

For me, 10 seconds and up is a nice number. We have sailed in smaller waves, but close together (typically in shallower bays), and the ride is not fun at all.

The waves in the Gulf Stream do build up a bit, and if there is a north wind, pushing against the direction of the massive Gulf, the washing-machine ride is guaranteed .

So, avoid winds from the north, and you will get manageable waves .

Pick the shortest route.

Due to the Gulf Stream’s powerful current, of around 5 miles per hour , you will not be able to cruise to the Bahamas straight across.

The current will end up pushing you to the north, as you are heading east. Keep this in mind, when you adjust your bearing.

Sailboats travel slower, adding to the additional miles to the north.

We were able to sail the entire time, keeping an average speed of around 7.5-8 knots! We even had the sails reefed a bit, but the wind never increased to more than 20kn.

For us, it was a fast sailing trip, with winds on our beam the entire passage, even though PredictWind showed them shifting.

Tip: Take any wind forecast with a grain of salt, the European model on PredictWInd ( ECMWF ) is more accurate.

Ensure your boat is in good condition.

Before embarking on your sailing trip from Miami to the Bahamas, check your main systems and safety gear . It is a good habit to get into, before any passage.

Repairing anything is a lot easier and faster in the US . Not to mention the hassle of shipping parts.

Here are the tools our Captain deemed most important: 27 Important Tools for Boaters. Our Captain’s Favorite Toys.

Since our boat was a bit of a fixer-upper, we spent 5 months in a boat yard , in St. Augustine (not complaining) before sailing to the Bahamas.

It was a bit unfortunate to lose so much cruising time and almost miss the best season, but we wanted to ensure everything was working . Especially sailing with kids aboard.

Speaking of sailing with kids, check out my popular post:

Sailing and Socializing Kids – 8 Ways to Find Friends on the High Seas .

After a semi sleepless night, we reached the beautiful Blue Gatorade waters of the Bahamas. It was all a gentle cruise for the kids, who took Dramamine and went to bed as we left Miami, only to wake up in Bimini the next morning!

Obtain the necessary documents and permits.

You can complete the pleasure vessel clearance online , but will need to then take the forms to be stamped, at the port of entry. So, print them before you leave for the Bahamas.

sailboat in Bimini with yellow quarantine flag

We first traveled to the Bahamas during the semi-impossible traveling times of the pandemic. Nowadays, it is much easier.

Here is a list of what you need to legally cruise the Bahamas as an American citizen:

  • A valid passport for every passenger aboard.
  • Visas are not required up to 90 days of stay.
  • A yellow quarantine flag to notify Customs of your arrival.
  • A curtesy Bahamas flag to fly once checked-in.
  • A cruising and fishing permit (for either 3 or 12 months).
  • Immigration cards filled by every passenger aboard (downloadable).
  • No Covid vaccinations or Tests are required for entry as of February 2024.

For the most up-to-date and accurate guidance regarding documentation and cruising requirements, visit the official website below:

Pleasure Vessel Clearance – The Bahamas Customs Department

For updated health-related travel information and requirements, visit:

COVID-19 Information for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands – U.S. Embassy in The Bahamas

You can clear customs and immigration right in Bimini. The anchorage is easy to navigate and plenty deep.

Only the captain of the vessel is allowed ashore , but we had no desire to get off the boat, anyway. The kids jumped in, to snorkel and look for sharks .

Fishing Permit

Even if you have no idea how to fish (like we did not), you will catch something .

a boy holding a spear with a lion fish on it

The Bahamas waters are excellent for fishing, conch and lobster catching. But conch is impossible to clean. But it tastes so good.

We did it all – fishing off the boat, lobsters and spear fishing. And dinners were amazing aboard Graceful. Little Harbour Cay was one of favorite spots for lobsters.

Just like applying for entry, fishing permit can be obtained online . I read the latest (as of February 2024) rules and regulations and here are the main points:

  • Anyone fishing from a foreign vessel needs a sports fishing permit.
  • Apply for your fishing permit before you leave your home country (it’s easier).
  • Only three vendors are approved for fishing licenses: Click to Clear , Go Outdoors and a third one, whose web-page is currently broken.
  • Everyone 12 years and older needs a permit to fly-fish.
  • Sport fishers are allowed to have up to 6 mature conchs on their vessel.
  • You can only obtain a sport-fishing permit after clearing Customs, not online.
  • You need a sport fishing permit, if you wish to spear fish.
  • Lobster catching season is from August 1st until March 31st.

Stock up on supplies and fuel.

Fuel and food are available in the Bahamas, as well as water. However, they all come with a higher price tag.

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

Depending on the duration of cruising, as well as your budget, it might be a good idea to stock up on some supplies and provisions before you leave the US.

We sailed the Berry Islands first, and there were very few options for grocery shopping. Very few.

Great Harbour Cay has a small grocery store, but everything is quite expensive.

I have a very detailed and long post, with meat and vegan meal plans and shopping lists, dedicated to provisioning for the Bahamas:

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Make sure you have a first aid kit on board and know how to use it.

I have a long blog post listing everything we purchased in preparation for our offshore cruising to the Bahamas and beyond. It is quite exhaustive:

First Aid Kit Aboard – Supplies and Organization.

There are doctors and clinics at every populated island town , in the Bahamas. You can find a contact number by asking at the local grocery shop, or marina.

But when it comes to those cool remote islands , it’s just you. So be prepared, just in case. Especially when traveling with kids, who like to jump , dive and chase all the time!

FAQ about sailing from Miami to the Bahamas.

What month is best to sail to bahamas.

Any month outside of hurricane season is suitable for sailing to Bahamas. To have enough time to enjoy the Bahamas before more storms start appearing, plan to leave around December-January.

We sailed in March and still had plenty of time to cruise and explore.

How hard is it to sail from Florida to Bahamas?

It is not hard. Many cruisers do it every year. Due to the Gulf Stream current pushing you north, as you try to sail east, starting in the Florida Keys is also a good option, for arrival to Bimini.

50 miles 2–3 hours
180 miles 8–10 hours
85 miles 4–5 hours

Route option 1: Miami to Bimini Island

The shortest and most direct route from Miami to the Bahamas is from Miami to Bimini Island. This route is approximately 50 miles and can be completed in about 2–3 hours by powerboat.

The course is relatively straightforward, and navigation is relatively easy, making it a popular choice for those looking for a quick trip to the Bahamas. Weather Conditions, The Gulf Stream, and Powerboats

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

Aside from the route taken, factors such as weather conditions, sea currents, and boat speed can affect how fast or slow your travel from Miami to the Bahamas will be. Let's discuss each one below:

Weather conditions and the best time to travel

The weather can affect the speed and safety of the boat, as well as the overall duration of the trip, in two ways:

  • If there are strong winds or high waves, the boat may need to slow down or even stop until the weather improves, which can add time to the trip.
  • If the weather is calm and favorable, the boat can maintain a higher speed and complete the trip more quickly.

Boaters need to be aware of weather forecasts and potential storms or hurricanes that may develop during the trip. If there is a risk of severe weather, it may be necessary to postpone or cancel the trip altogether.

The best time to travel from Miami to the Bahamas is between May and September when the weather conditions are ideal for cruising. During these months, the temperatures are warm, and the seas are calm, making for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. However, hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, so be sure to check the weather conditions before you book your trip.

You want to make sure that the winds and seas are calm enough to make the trip safely. If you're planning a weekend trip, you may have more flexibility with the weather conditions, but you might still need to keep an eye on the forecast.

The Gulf Stream and how it affects boat travel time

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

The Gulf Stream is a powerful ocean current that flows from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits and into the Atlantic Ocean. This current impacts boaters that traverse from Miami to the Bahamas, both positively and negatively.

On the positive side, it can provide a strong current that can help speed up the boat and reduce the overall boating time. If the boat can navigate the Gulf Stream and take advantage of its current, it can potentially save time and fuel.

On the negative side, it can also create challenging conditions for boaters, especially if the wind and waves are in opposition to the current. This can create rough seas that can slow down the boat and make the trip more difficult and dangerous.

To minimize the impact, you may need to understand the current and how it can affect their trip. Try to plan your route to take advantage of the current when possible, and avoid areas where the current and wind are in opposition. Still, you have to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared for any potential changes in conditions that may impact your trip.

Powerboats can reduce your travel time

Below are key characteristics of a powerboat that is suitable for a quick trip from Miami to the Bahamas:

One that can maintain a high speed, such as 30–40 knots
Must be fuel-efficient to help save on fuel costs and reduce the number of refueling stops required during the trip
One with a large fuel tank can help extend the range of the boat
Must have comfortable seating and sleeping arrangements
Must be equipped with the necessary navigation and safety equipment, such as GPS, radar, life jackets, and flares
Must have good storage capacity to accommodate all the necessary gear and supplies
Must have a seaworthy design, and high freeboard, for a smooth and stable ride in rough seas.
Should be operated by an experienced captain and crew

yacht trip from miami to bahamas

There are several types of boats you can use for a boating trip from Miami to the Bahamas, including powerboats, yachts, and sailboats. However, powerboats are the most popular choice for boaters, as they offer speed and comfort.

As Hurricane Beryl moves across the Caribbean, a number of cruise lines have changed itineraries in the area in an effort to avoid the storm.

▶ Norwegian Cruise Line altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami, Florida, on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests that the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

Was your cruise itinerary changed? Here's what to do next

▶ Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty ship moved a planned Friday stop in Cozumel up to Tuesday. The vessel departed on a week-long cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, according to CruiseMapper .

Carnival Horizon, which is sailing a six-day itinerary that left Miami on Sunday, will skip a visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement.

▶ Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy ship – which set sail on a week-long cruise from Port Canaveral on Saturday – will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a sea day .

The center of the storm is expected to “move quickly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea today,” passing near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands the following day, the National Hurricane Center said.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Beryl has restrengthened into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was located about 70 miles (125 kilometers) east of Grenada on Monday morning and had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Beryl was closing in on the southeastern Caribbean, and government officials late Sunday pleaded with people to take shelter from the dangerous Category 3 storm.

The storm was expected to make landfall in the Windward Islands on Monday morning. Hurricane warnings were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“This is a very dangerous situation,” warned the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, saying Beryl was “forecast to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge.”

Beryl was centered about 110 miles (175 kilometers) south-southeast of Barbados early Monday. It had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kph) and was moving west at 20 mph (31 kph). It is a compact storm, with hurricane-force winds extending 30 miles (45 kilometers) from its center.

Image

It had gained Category 4 strength Sunday before weakening slightly, and further fluctuations in strength were forecast.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Martinique and Trinidad. A tropical storm watch was issued for Dominica, Haiti’s entire southern coast, and from Punta Palenque in the Dominican Republic west to the border with Haiti.

Beryl was expected to pass just south of Barbados early Monday and then head into the Caribbean Sea as a major hurricane on a path toward Jamaica. It was forecast to weaken by midweek, but still remain a hurricane while heading toward Mexico.

Historic hurricane

Image

Beryl initially strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane Sunday morning, becoming the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

It took Beryl only 42 hours to strengthen from a tropical depression to a major hurricane — a feat accomplished only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history, and with Sept. 1 as the previous earliest date, hurricane expert Sam Lillo said.

Beryl then gained more power, becoming the earliest Category 4 Atlantic hurricane on record , besting Hurricane Dennis, which became a Category 4 storm on July 8, 2005, hurricane specialist and storm surge expert Michael Lowry said.

“Beryl is an extremely dangerous and rare hurricane for this time of year in this area,” Lowry said in a phone interview. “Unusual is an understatement. Beryl is already a historic hurricane and it hasn’t struck yet.”

Hurricane Ivan in 2004 was the last strong hurricane to hit the southeastern Caribbean, causing catastrophic damage in Grenada as a Category 3 storm.

“So this is a serious threat, a very serious threat,” Lowry said of Beryl.

AP AUDIO: Dangerous Hurricane Beryl restrengthens to Category 4 off Grenada

In a briefing, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan says people in the Winward Islands should comply with any evacuation orders they might receive.

Reecia Marshall, who lives in Grenada, was working a Sunday shift at a local hotel, preparing guests and urging them to stay away from windows as she stored enough food and water for everyone.

She said that she was a child when Hurricane Ivan struck and that she doesn’t fear Beryl.

“I know it’s part of nature. I’m OK with it,” she said. “We just have to live with it.”

Forecasters warned of a life-threatening storm surge of up to 9 feet (3 meters) in areas where Beryl makes landfall, with 3 to 6 inches (7.6 to 15 centimeters) of rain for Barbados and nearby islands and possibly 10 inches in some areas (25 centimeters).

Warm waters are fueling Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year, said Brian McNoldy, a tropical meteorology researcher at the University of Miami.

Lowry said the waters are now warmer than they would be at the peak of the hurricane season in September.

Beryl marks the farthest east that a hurricane has formed in the tropical Atlantic in June, breaking a record set in 1933, according to Klotzbach.

Image

“Please take this very seriously and prepare yourselves,” said Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “This is a terrible hurricane.”

Bracing for the storm

Long lines formed at gas stations and grocery stores in Barbados and other islands as people rushed to prepare for a storm that rapidly intensified.

Thousands of people were in Barbados for Saturday’s Twenty20 World Cup final , cricket’s biggest event, with Prime Minister Mia Mottley noting that not all fans were able to leave Sunday despite many rushing to change their flights.

“Some of them have never gone through a storm before,” she said. “We have plans to take care of them.”

Mottley said all businesses should close by Sunday evening and warned that the airport would close by nighttime.

Across Barbados, people prepared, including Peter Corbin, 71, who helped his son put up plywood to protect his home’s glass doors. He said by phone that he worried about Beryl’s impact on islands just east of Barbados.

“That’s like a butcher cutting up a pig,” he said. “They’ve got to make a bunker somewhere. It’s going to be tough.”

In St. Lucia, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a national shutdown for Sunday evening and said schools and businesses would remain closed Monday.

“Preservation and protection of life is a priority,” he said.

Looking ahead

Caribbean leaders were preparing not only for Beryl, but for a cluster of thunderstorms trailing the hurricane that had a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

“Do not let your guard down,” Mottley said.

Beryl is the second named storm in what is forecast to be an above-average hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 in the Atlantic. Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Alberto came ashore in northeastern Mexico with heavy rains that resulted in four deaths.

On Sunday evening, a tropical depression formed near the eastern Mexico coastal city of Veracruz, with the National Hurricane Center warning of flooding and mudslides.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts the 2024 hurricane season is likely to be well above average, with between 17 and 25 named storms. The forecast calls for as many as 13 hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

An average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, seven of them hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
