If you have time during your trip, we suggest you take at least one boat trip to Lanzarote . It’s a great way to admire the island from afar, enjoy the volcanoes and maybe see some dolphins and whales. Here is our selection of the best boat trips in Lanzarote.

1. Dolphin-watching boat trip to Lanzarote

Dolphin-watching boat trip on Lanzarote

Departure : mainly from Puerto del Carmen Duration: 1h30 to 2h30, depending on the tour chosen

Our favorite tour was the dolphin-watching trip. We were very lucky and had a dazzling show! Of course, there’s no guarantee of seeing dolphins or whales, but in any case you’ll enjoy the beautiful views of the island, the pleasure of gliding over the water… And the excitement of looking off into the distance for a glimpse of a fin. And when you find them, it’s unforgettable!

fast boat

Several types of boat tours are available, including dolphin watching:

Option 1 – Our favourite: daytime speedboat – duration 1h30 with swimming See details and availability

Option 2 – sunset speedboat – 2h30 with champagne See details and availability

Option 3 – Catamaran sunset cruise – 2h See details and availability

Dolphins are present all year round in the Canary Islands. There are groups of resident dolphins. You’ll mainly see bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales.

Find out more in our article on dolphin watching in Lanzarote .

2. Ferry to the island of La Graciosa

Graciosa Island

Departure : from Orzola, north of Lanzarote Duration: depending on the crossing chosen… we recommend a full day.

La Graciosa is a small island north of Lanzarote, one of our favourite spots in the Carabibean Islands! Access is by ferry and there are no roads at all, just tracks in the sand. You can explore it on foot or with one of the 4WD cabs. Unlike Lanzarote, it is covered in golden-white sand. But there are also a few volcanoes. The colors are magnificent and you can enjoy a variety of landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry crossing is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote.

ferry to la graciosa island

If you have your own rental car, I recommend taking the first ferry in the morning to avoid the crowds that come to spend the day at the beach. Ferries depart from Orzola. Note that for those staying in Playa Blanca, it takes longer to get to the north (1h10min by car). 2 companies offer ferries from Lanzarote to La Graciosa.

View express ferry departures and book your ticket

If you don’t have a car, they also organize hotel pick-ups combined with the ferry, but you have less choice of schedule.

See options and book your seat

Catamaran between Fuerteventura and La Graciosa

Another option if you don’t have a car is to combine the bus and ferry with a catamaran trip. You won’t be on the island of La Gracios as much, but you’ll be able to admire it from the sea and get a better view of its volcanoes.

Hotel Barcelo Costa Teguise

3. Cruise to Papagayo beaches

catamaran along the coast of Lanzaorte

Departure : from Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca Duration: 4 hours

Lanzarote’s southwest coast is a must-see. Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island’s main attractions. Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).

Catamaran Papagayo

You can explore it on foot, or via an unpaved track. Or you can take a boat out to sea and admire the wilderness. Just be aware that you won’t be able to get to the beaches from the boats.

From Puerto del Carmen: A catamaran allows you to explore the entire south coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins. You can swim or kayak around the boat. See program and availability

From Playa Blanca: You’ll set off on a yacht to discover these magnificent landscapes. You can swim and stand-up paddle around the boat. See program and availability

4. Yellow submarine ride

Yellow submarine in Puerto Calero

Departure : from Puerto Calero (note that this is not the same port as Puerto del Carmen) Duration: 1 hour

Yellow submarine… Yellow submarine… We warn you, after this trick, you’ll have the song stuck in your head! This tour takes you a little way out of the harbor to discover the seabed. It’s pretty impressive to be underwater like that, knowing that you’re not that deep… no stress! It’s an ideal activity for the whole family (except claustrophobics, of course). But the room is big enough, so we didn’t feel any anxiety.

In the Lanzarote submarine

Duration 1h. You must watch a security video before entering their offices. Places are limited! See availability and make reservations

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

5. Excursion to Lobos Island

This tour combines several experiences for those looking for a complete adventure:

  • Descent along the south coast with beautiful views of the oldest part of Lanzarote
  • Search for dolphins during the crossing (but nothing is guaranteed)

7. Kayak, paddle board or jet ski excursions

paddle in Playa Blanca

Departure : from Playa Blanca Duration: depending on the activity

If you prefer more active craft, you can opt for kayaking or jet skiing…

You’ll have plenty of choice in Playa Blanca.

  • Kayaking to explore the coast – see availability and make a reservation
  • Paddleboarding for balance training – see availability and book now
  • Jet-skiing, if you’re looking for speed – see availability and make a reservation

8. Ferry to Fuerteventura

yacht tour lanzarote

Departure : from Playa Blanca Duration: 5 hours

From Lanzarote, you can also explore the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. They are both very different, as many of Lanzarote’s landscapes are quite recent compared with Fuerteventura (eruption in the 18th century).

It’s a short ferry ride from Corralejo (north of Fuerteventura) to Playa Blanca (south of Lanzarote). The island is big, so you’ll only be able to see the north, but it’s already nice with the sand dunes!

Corralejo dunes

You can then take the ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo. The crossing is very pleasant, with views over the 2 islands and also the small island of Lobos.

See ferry options

Once in Corralejo, you can take a cab to explore the dunes, stroll around the charming town of Corralejo or book a tour. See our article on the best things to do in Corralejo .

9. Cab boat Puerto del Carmen – Puerto Calero

water cab

And finally, it’s not really an excursion, but if you want to walk a bit, you can take the short, fairly flat hike between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero and return with the water cab between the two to enjoy the pretty views from the sea (10min crossing).

Buy your tickets.

Lanzarote Catlanza Cruise

Top Customer Reviews

Jane meecham-broadbent, excellent trip much better booking in advance online.

Fantastic service travelling in half term withtwo kids good trips are often booked when we wrrive in resort. Was great being able to choose a trip online before we travelled. Just had to phone and confrim night before, operator had our names and details. This cruise was great fun and to top it all we saw dolphins on the way home! The guide was very funny and the food pasta with a sauce, salad and bread was fine. Drinks free throughout. Kids loved sitting on the trampoline type bits of the catamaran. Would highly recommend.

Good value, great staff, great day out

Had a mix up with the pick up location, and so missed the date I booked for. This was sorted out by the Catlanza people in Puerto Calero who upgraded us to the platinum cruise on the next available day. On that day all went smoothly, the staff were excellent as was the boat. we all had a fabulous day including my partner's parents who aren't very mobile. Everyone aboard seemed to be taken care of very well. For isango, please emphasise on the booking that the boat runs out of Puerto Calero only, this is not clear. Also that it is essential to call the local agent on arrival to confirm the coach pick up point, as this can change. Mine was not as you advertised on the booking, but was corrected eventually by Catlanza staff. Overall a very good trip.

gary l green

Fun and relaxing.

Very good crew and experience. Well prepared and very enjoyable for all ages. Well recommended.

About Paris

Experience Boat Tours in Lanzarote

Explore the neighbours : Enjoy Lanzarote, but make sure to seek out this island's nearby neighbours. You can catch a ferry to La Graciosa, an idyllic and beautiful island. It only takes around 30 minutes, and you’ll be on a modern ferry as it speeds towards the haven for nature lovers. There are secluded beaches and dramatic volcanic landscapes to take in.

Best things to do : There are some fun places to visit during your Lanzarote stay. The Cactus Garden is a delight, and spiky! There’s Cesar Manrique Foundation, home to a Spanish art collection. Take a trip to the caves at Cueva de Los Verdes. They are unique, and house an auditorium and hold concerts. Finally, there’s the stunning Timanfaya National Park. Geysers, eateries and fantastic views.

When to go : Low season may be between September and June, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good time to visit. It’s less crowded than the high season of the summer months, but still with warm temperatures. It’s a sub-tropical climate after all.

• Fancy a steak? Well, head for Timanfaya National Park, and you can cook steaks on the rocks!

• Head for the west coast, head by the lava fields, and you’ll come across the secret lagoon. It’s tucked into the red cliffs and volcanic landscapes. You’ll notice its striking jade colour. Another world with another world! That’s Lanzarote.

• From the volcanic landscape to the Haria Valley. Here you’ll find the densest concentration of Canarian Palm Trees in the world. It’s a lush green landscape among the rocks.

Lanzarote Visitors Testimonials

We did the 1 1/2 hour trip! Highly recommended, we had a 14' 12 and 8 year old with us and we all loved it. Didn't see any dolphins but got a glimpse of a whale. Great fun and the highlight of our holiday. Very professional service who made you feel safe. This is a must to do in Lanzarote and far better to look for dolphins in the wild where they should be! I cannot thank you enough for a memorable day X from the Jones'

This was our second time doing the RIB coastal adventure with waverider. As before it was an amazing experience and very professional. Was quite choppy out in open water so lots of bumping over waves and plenty of soakings from the spray, which all added to the fun. Lovely chance to swim/snorkel down at Papagayo. Thoroughly recommend this trip if you are up for some fun.

lanzarote trips

Went on the dolphin and whale watching experience. You have to be aware there is no guarantee you will see them as they are free spirited sea going creatures but you are given a real good search for them. We did see plenty of dolphins which were amazing. They were diving up and down, seemed as though they were playing with the boat or showing off as they swam right beside us. Marco the captain really tried to find something for you to see and being on a boat at see is great, so relaxing. A bonus was we had a bit of a speed blast back to the harbour, but if you don't like speed it's not done. I would recommend this experience.

César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport is the only airport on the island, so it is the arrival point for most visitors. It is situated between the tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen and the capital, Arrecife.

There are two terminals. International flights land at Terminal One, where Arrivals are on the lower floor and Departures on the upper floor. The Information Desk is situated on the upper floor.

If you need assistance, the airport staff can be spotted wearing green jackets. If you fly from one of the other islands in the archipelago, you will arrive at Terminal Two.

Inside the airport you will find a range of shops providing local products, clothes, books, and magazines. There are also several fast-food outlets, restaurants, and cafes with both indoor and outdoor seating.

However, note that there is no bureau de change, though you can draw local money from ATMs around the facility. Car hire operators operate from the Arrivals floor, but it’s advisable to pre-book cars.

Many tourists take taxis from the airport to their hotel. There are local buses from the airport to nearby Arrecife but not to any of the popular tourist destinations.

Note that the airport is exceptionally busy on Thursdays as this is the main changeover day for tourists. On Thursdays, you will find the airport crowded, more queues in the shops, and a longer wait for taxis.

You deserve to have a really great time in Lanzarote, so here are 6 tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Tip #1: Take The Time To Enjoy The Natural Beauty Of Lanzarote

Lanzarote’s three main tourist resorts are Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, and Costa Teguise, and it’s easy to get sucked into the nightlife in your hotel and surrounding area. However, if you don’t take the time to step out of these tourist zones, you’ll miss out on much of the natural beauty of this fascinating island.

Lanzarote was created by a series of volcanic eruptions over a period of 15 million years. The island boasts many fascinating volcanic rock formations, some of the most interesting of which may be viewed under the sea in the crystal-clear water. Timanfaya National Park even features an active volcano.

Just a mile to the north of the main island is the small and peaceful island of La Graciosa, which features a marine reserve and is part of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park.

This hidden beauty is an idyllic location to relax and admire the volcanic mountains, pristine beaches, and abundant sea life.  Sadly, this natural beauty spot may only be reached by boat or ferry, but it is well worth the effort.

Off the east coast of Lanzarote, a unique underwater volcanic landscape may be seen in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A little further south, the Papagayo coves are a collection of small beaches divided by cliffs that create sheltered bays along the southwest coast.

These peaceful coves are renowned for their breathtaking white sand, clear water, and colorful sea life. Dolphins and whales are frequently spotted just off the coast. This area of the island is a national park.

The beaches may be accessed by road, but it is a bumpy dirt track and there is an entrance fee for cars. Alternatively, the coves may be reached by foot from Los Coloradas or by sea on tours like those featured above.

Tip #2: Book Tickets In Advance, Especially During Winter

Because of its favorable winter climate, the peak tourist season in Lanzarote runs from November to April. During this time tourist attractions and tours are extremely busy and it is advisable to book in advance.

This advice applies not only to the tours featured above but also any tourist attractions or events you wish to see. It would be a shame if you missed your opportunity to swim with the fishes because all the tours were fully booked before you arrived.

Tip #3: Don’t Forget To Tip

In Lanzarote, it’s customary to tip taxi drivers, gas pump attendants, and waiting staff. Good service in a restaurant is usually rewarded by a tip of 10% of the bill.

Taxi drivers expect you to round up the fare to a round figure. Be good to them and they will be good to you.

Tip #4: Take Comfy & Waterproof Shoes

Crocs may not be the most attractive shoes, but sometimes practicality is important. If you’re planning to spend half your time snorkeling in the ocean and half lazing on the beach, make sure that your footwear allows you to easily and comfortably swap from one activity to the other.

However, if you plan to hike across rough volcanic rock formations or stand on the potentially slippery deck of a glass bottomed yacht staring down at the fabulous sea life below, sturdy waterproof boots that you have already worn-in would be more suitable.

Tip #5: Beware The Tap Water

The tap water in Lanzarote is produced by the desalination of seawater. It is safe enough to use when bathing, brushing your teeth, and cooking. However, you should not drink water straight out of the faucet.

Many shops and all hypermarkets on the island sell cheap bottled drinking water for quick and safe rehydration.

Tip #6: Buy Unique Souvenirs

A unique green gemstone called peridot is found in the volcanic soil in Lanzarote, and local jewelers use peridot to craft unique jewelry to remind you of your adventures amongst the volcanoes.

Clothes shops sell T-shirts and other items of clothing decorated with César Manrique’s eye-catching logos.

Because Lanzarote is an island, seafood is popular, and you will find an amazing selection of local specialties. Lapas are limpets cooked in a butter and garlic sauce with coriander and served in the frying pan. Pescasdo a la Plancha is simply the fish of the day, served grilled with or without garlic.

Anchovy fillets and La Santa Prawns are also popular, but the most famous local dish you might want to try is Puntillas de Calamar. This is battered and deep-fried whole baby squids, usually served with a squeeze of lemon.

For the less adventurous, and a change from seafood, a popular local food is Papas Arrugadas with Mojo Sauce. Papas Arrugadas are small potatoes boiled in seawater (or these days, more likely salted tap water) and Mojo Sauce is a spicy sauce.

Every family has their own unique recipe for Mojo Sauce, and you will come across a wide variety. Estofado is also popular with the locals. This is a stew containing either beef or goat, chick peas, and other vegetables.

Like Mojo Sauce, there are many variations of Estofado found around the island. The local goat cheese is delicious. It is mile, white, and a little salty.

And would you like some wine with your meal? The sweet wine produced from the Malvasia grape was once the favorite drink of the aristocracy.

The vineyards in Lanzarote are unique because of the rich volcanic soil and unusual manner of cultivation. Whatever you eat and drink, don’t forget about the customary 10% tip in restaurants.

Given that Lanzarote is a prime destination for younger tourists and families, it isn’t surprising that its nightlife is vibrant. However, the kind of nightlife you find depends on where you go around the island.

Most of the nightlife and entertainment is found around the three main tourist resorts: Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, and Costa Teguise.

On the south coast, Puerto del Carmen was developed around an old town harbor and is the largest resort. If you seek the clubbing scene, this is the place to be.

You will find lively nightclubs and cocktail bars open late into the wee hours of the next day. For those who like a gamble, there is also a popular casino.

Playa Blanca is a relatively new resort area that has seen rapid expansion and development over the past few years. The Marina Rubicon attracts luxury yachts, so around this area you will find fine-dining restaurants, elegant bars, and entertainment aimed at the more discerning clientele.

Costa Teguise is the longest established resort. It is more relaxed and subtler than the other two resorts, making it popular with quieter people. The nightlife here is more limited, but some of the island’s best cocktail bars may be found around the Avenida de las Islas Canarias.

Lanzarote is small, so getting around is relatively simple. The easiest way to get around is to hire a car. Numerous car hire operators have desks in the Arrivals hall of Terminal One at the airport.

But if you plan to hire a vehicle, please do book in advance, especially during the peak winter months.

If you don’t want to hire a car, consider using taxis. Because most places are close to one another, taxi fares are relatively affordable.

But, if you have plenty of time or are on a tight budget, Lanzarote has a fabulous and cheap public transport system. Local bus routes cover all the major places of interest.

If you want to travel further afield and visit Graciosa Island, or any of the other Canary Islands, you can take a ferry.

There are hundreds of hotels and places to stay in Lanzarote. The most important question to answer is which area best meets your requirements.

If you decide not to hire a car, it would be easier to stay in one of the three main resorts: Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, and Costa Teguise. Most tourist tours, like the snorkel tours above, start in these three places.

They are very self-contained, providing everything you need to make your stay comfortable.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, there are several small, peaceful towns, such as Teguise, Yaiza, and Haria. IF you have young children, you will find more activities for young ones around Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. But if you want to party, you should stay in Puerto del Carmen.

Lanzarote is one of the few destinations in the world that can boast year-round perfect weather. It has a subtropical desert climate, which means rainfall is rare during summers and extremely low at other times of the year.

The island is usually sunny but doesn’t get too hot, causing some to call it “The Island of Eternal Spring”. The average temperature ranges from 63 0 F in January to 77 0 F in August.

And if you are keen on swimming through the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic to see the unique underwater volcanic formations, you will be delighted to learn that the average water temperature hardly varies at all, ranging from 64 0 F in February up to 72 0 F in September.

Because Lanzarote offers warm and sunny weather during the winter months when the climate in nearby Europe is cold and wet, the high season for tourists is from November to April.

That means tours and tourist attractions will be busiest in winter and relatively quiet during the summer.

The crystal-clear Atlantic, underwater volcanic formations, and sea life are not the only attractions in Lanzarotte. Here’s a selection of other popular attractions you might enjoy.

Timanfaya National Park is one of the most fascinating places in the world. It is a black volcanic landscape centered around an active volcano.

If you visit the restaurant at the summit, you can buy food cooked using heat from the volcano. Some tourists take advantage of fun camel safaris around the park.

In the center of the island you will find the historic town of Teguise, which is the original capital founded in the 15 th century.

There you will find cobbled streets lined by imposing colonial mansions and the 16 th century Convento de San Francisco. There is a popular market every Sunday.

If you are impressed by the many examples of César Manrique’s art that you see around the island, you can visit his unique house, which is built into a lava field and contains a museum and art gallery with works by Picasso, Saura, Millares, and — of course — César Manrique.

Dolphin Tour Sunset Lanzarote

Experience whales and dolphins in the wild and enjoy the stunning sunset on the sea. Two of the most beautiful nature experiences in Lanzarote combined to an absolutely fantastic boat tour. This romantic tour starts in the late afternoon. It does not take much luck to see dolphins on Lanzarote, as the probability of a sighting is close to 100%. In addition, the sympathetic dolphins are very sociable and love to swim in the bow wave of the boat. Until dawn, devote yourself to the thrilling search for these fascinating mammals and other marine life. And at sunset, you will finally raise a glass of Cava on this unique experience. End this wonderful day in Lanzarote in style, watching Dolphins and the enchanting play of colors of the sunset glow.

This whale and dolphin watching trip, starts at the port of Puerto del Carmen. On request, you will be picked up and also brought back from the mayor holiday resorts in Lanzarote like Arrecife, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca or Puerto Calero for free.

Please note that although the probability of a sighting is extremely high, it cannot be guaranteed. The experienced crew will do everything necessary to make this extraordinary experience possible.

Please keep in mind that the dolphins and whales are not to be disturbed during this tour. We therefore ask for your understanding that the boat will always keep at a distance from the animals. Approach and interaction does always exclusively come from the dolphins depending on their humor.

Ada – 31. October 2020

Bad experience. We booked at Canco because it seemed like a better option than the typical tourist companies. Error! they refer you to the same as the rest. They speak of a probability close to 100%, and that is a lie. In our case we did not see any, but the worst thing is that as soon as we get on the boat they warn us that it is difficult, that let’s see if we are lucky, that a couple of days ago they had seen, but that many days not… A lot of money for a boat ride…

Answer from CANCO: Dear Ada, on our website we try to give you the clearest overview possible. For this reason we explain that we are not an operator, but an online excursion sales platform. Information that also appears on the ticket you have received. We also explain that there can be no guarantees of sighting, as they are animals in the wild. Information contained in the description of the activity itself. But it is true that the Canary Islands are an excellent place, among the best in the world, to see cetaceans. We still try to be very transparent and publish the information in several documents highly visible. Unfortunately, we have no influence that attention is paid to the data provided. We regret that the experience was not what you imagined.

Paula – 1. October 2020

We loved it.

Jordi – 22. June 2020

Worth every euro!!! Would highly recommend this, great boat and lovely staff. A great way to see these lovely creatures wild and free.

Franz – 4. March 2020

It’s worth it!

Nick – 21. February 2020

Nice boat trip, friendly crew with the dolphins as a highlight. It was a special experience.

Ben – 24. January 2020

I mainly had expectations of the sunset, it was very beautiful but we couldn’t see it well enough because when the sun went down we sailed too little east. We saw dolphins and the guide and skipper also tried their best.

Julie – 23. January 2020

Just disappointed I didn’t see dolphins!

Ninje – 9. January 2020

Very relaxing watching the waves, and so nice to see the beautiful colour of the sunset.

José – 17. December 2019

The experience of seeing dolphins in their natural habitat was great. We saw the two types that inhabit the waters of Lanzarote!

Beth – 12. December 2019

Impressive tour! Seen a group of 100 dolphins and a sea turtle. Anchored on the way back to watch the sunset with champagne and cake. The crew was very nice.

Nuria – 10. December 2019

Micha – 3. December 2019

Nice ride with a speedboat, but nothing more. You can see the sunset, but we didn’t see any dolphins. However, this is not guaranteed either! The crew is nice.
