For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel . Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar.

Who are the best luxury yacht interior designers?

Winch design.

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with Winch Design. Originally founded as Andrew Winch Designs by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, it was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015. One of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years, it is now led by Jim Dixon. His team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects is the 289ft Feadship, for which the studio has both interior and exterior design credits. The innovative spaces created by Dixon’s team blend indoor and outdoor by offering open spaces, neutral colors, and earthly textures and materials.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where fellow yacht design giants Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that he decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio also has an office in Monaco in order to provide its design services to European costumers.

Previous yacht designs that Sorgiovanni has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, the colossal White Rabbit and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When he is not working on one of his award-winning projects, he is traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions by exclusive clients – including Donald Trump. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s flagship projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market in 2020 for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out, to avoid having to compromise on any ideas for the indoor spaces.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1990 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from its hometown for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding of the sea.

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Tillberg Design of Sweden

Tillberg Design of Sweden yacht interior designer superyacht Somnio

Our list of the most exclusive yacht interior designers would not be complete without mentioning Tillberg Design of Sweden . Founded in 1964 in Höganäs, the practice has been designing timeless Scandinavian-inspired interiors on board some of the world’s most luxurious vessels for over five decades.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Perhaps most impressive is the studio’s recent project designing the interiors onboard the gigantic 728-foot superyacht Somnio .

The recently released renderings reveal stunning dream-like rooms expertly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

Step aboard and immerse yourself in the opulent world of luxury yacht interiors! From sleek modern designs to timeless elegance, the art of interior design in yachts is a captivating blend of style, functionality, and creativity. Join us on a journey as we explore the top trends, layout tips, material choices, furnishing styles, and clever storage solutions that make these floating palaces truly spectacular. Get ready to be inspired by the beauty and innovation behind crafting the perfect yacht interior!

Top trends in luxury yacht interior design

Luxury yacht interior design is constantly evolving, embracing new trends to create stunning and functional spaces that cater to the desires of discerning clients. One notable trend in yacht interiors is the use of sustainable materials, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental responsibility within the industry. Another popular trend is the incorporation of smart technology, seamlessly integrating features like automated lighting and climate control for enhanced comfort and convenience.

In terms of aesthetics, contemporary minimalism continues to be a favored style among yacht owners, with clean lines and neutral color palettes creating a sense of calm sophistication. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s also a resurgence of classic glamour in yacht design, with luxurious fabrics, ornate details, and rich textures evoking a sense of timeless elegance on board.

From innovative layouts to cutting-edge decor elements, staying ahead of these top trends ensures that luxury yacht interiors remain at the pinnacle of sophistication and style.

Material and design choices for yacht interiors

Choosing the right materials and designs for yacht interiors is crucial in creating a luxurious and stylish space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle. From opulent marble countertops to sleek stainless steel fixtures, every detail contributes to the overall aesthetic of your yacht’s interior.

When it comes to materials, consider durable yet elegant options like teak wood flooring or leather upholstery for a timeless look. Incorporating high-quality fabrics and finishes will not only enhance the visual appeal but also ensure longevity in a marine environment.

In terms of design choices, think about maximizing natural light with large windows or incorporating innovative lighting solutions for ambiance. Selecting a color palette that complements the ocean views can create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Whether you prefer modern minimalism or classic elegance, the key is to balance functionality with aesthetics to achieve an inviting and sophisticated yacht interior that suits your unique style preferences.

Popular interior styles for yacht furnishing

When it comes to interior styles for yacht furnishing, there are a few popular options that exude luxury and sophistication. One classic style is the nautical theme, featuring navy blues, whites, and touches of gold or brass accents to create a timeless maritime ambiance.

For those seeking a more modern look, contemporary design with clean lines and neutral colors like grey or beige can provide a sleek and elegant aesthetic onboard. Incorporating state-of-the-art technology seamlessly into the design can elevate the overall experience.

Alternatively, an eclectic style mixing different textures, patterns, and colors can add personality and vibrancy to the space. Think bold artwork pieces paired with plush velvet furnishings for a stylish yet cozy atmosphere that feels like home away from home on the open seas.

No matter which style you choose for your yacht furnishing, creating a harmonious blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics is key to achieving a truly luxurious onboard experience.

How to design the perfect layout for your yacht

Designing the perfect layout for your luxury yacht is a crucial step in creating a comfortable and functional space that reflects your personal style. Start by considering the flow of the space – ensure there is enough room to move around freely without feeling cramped.

Think about the purpose of each area on the yacht – from dining and lounging to sleeping quarters and entertainment spaces. Each area should serve its own unique function while seamlessly connecting with the rest of the layout.

Utilize natural light to create an open and airy feel onboard. Large windows, skylights, or even glass floors can bring in plenty of sunlight and offer stunning views of the surrounding waters.

Consider incorporating versatile furniture pieces that can easily transform to suit different needs throughout the day. Opt for sleek designs that maximize space without compromising on style.

Lastly, don’t forget about outdoor areas! Designing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces will enhance your overall yachting experience as you enjoy breathtaking sunsets or dine al fresco under the stars.

Clever storage solutions for yachts

When it comes to designing the interior of a luxury yacht, clever storage solutions are key. With limited space on board, maximizing every inch is essential for both functionality and aesthetics.

One smart storage solution often seen in yachts is utilizing hidden compartments beneath seating areas or within walls. This not only saves space but also maintains a clean and uncluttered look throughout the yacht.

Another popular option is incorporating multi-functional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes, such as a coffee table with built-in storage or a bed frame with drawers underneath. These innovative designs help minimize clutter while adding practicality to the living spaces.

Vertical storage solutions like tall cabinets or shelving units can also make use of otherwise wasted space, providing ample room for storing belongings without sacrificing floor space.

Overall, integrating these clever storage solutions into the design of a yacht ensures that everything has its place, creating a harmonious and organized environment for passengers to enjoy their time at sea.

Luxury yacht interior design is truly an art form that combines creativity, functionality, and elegance. From incorporating the latest trends to selecting the perfect materials and styles, designing the interior of a yacht requires careful planning and attention to detail.

By following top trends in luxury yacht interior design, creating a layout that maximizes space, choosing high-quality materials and stylish designs, as well as implementing clever storage solutions, you can transform your yacht into a luxurious floating oasis.

Whether you prefer a modern minimalist look or a classic nautical style, there are endless possibilities when it comes to designing your yacht’s interior. So let your imagination run wild and create a space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle while enjoying the ultimate luxury on the open seas.

Yacht Interiors: A Work of Art

2019 already has us off and running!  As we close out projects we’ve been working on and begin new projects for yacht interiors. I think about a quote that is said to have been stated by the famous French artist Edgar Degas:

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”.  Edgar Degas Tweet

This quote, to me, perfectly sums up how I see each and every one of my projects. A yacht is intended to be a complete work of art, a deliberate combination of every detail beginning with the space planning and ending with art and accessories to complete the design, resulting in a feeling of harmony in style throughout.  The process is an inspirational journey that culminates in a space that is functional, refined and unique. One that appeals to all five senses and is an expression of how the owner desires to feel.

A yacht is both an exquisitely-engineered machine and a luxurious living space that requires balance and organization. The journey to creating the interior for such a vessel begins with space planning in which function, spatial efficiency, and aesthetics must all be taken into consideration

Yacht Interiors

Each architectural detail is a small part of the whole, whether it be the relationship between a wall and ceiling, a change in the direction of veneer grain, a unique finish or combination of finishes, polished metal accent, a specially designed handrail, bespoke hardware or a plumbing fixture.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

Custom furniture acts as an object of art while being functional and providing ultimate comfort and high-quality fabrics in various colors and textures stimulate the senses.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

Art is like a window to your deepest desires and impressive and refined accessories embellish evocative interiors. On a yacht, art and accessories must be considered in the early stages of design and cannot be left as an afterthought. There are many details to take into consideration right at the beginning such as lighting and mounting. Will a piece of wall art have an art light or be lit by a ceiling light? If it is an art light, will it be mounted to the wall above the art or to the frame? If it is a ceiling light, will it be an “eyeball” light that swivels? How far from the wall must the light be placed? Lighting also must be taken into consideration for sculptural pieces. If a large piece of wall art, sculpture or accessory is being used, how will it be brought on board? How wall art, sculpture, and accessories are secured must also be taken into consideration. Although I may not immediately begin selecting specific art and accessories pieces at the very beginning of a project, as I am working on the layout, creating designs and preparing elevations and details, I am, simultaneously, determining the locations where wall art will be hung and sculptures and accessories will be placed.

yacht interior art

Exclusive pieces of wall art, unique framed mirrors, distinctive sculptures, luxe decorative vases, other refined objects, and fresh florals add the special finishing touch personalizing the design and further heighten the material senses.

Various owners select art and accessories for different reasons. On the 142’ Christensen Lady Bee , as an homage to Mardi Gras, specially-commissioned artwork by Peter O’Neill appears throughout the yacht interiors, portraying Greek gods and goddesses arrayed with Mardi Gras accoutrement.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

On the 100’ Nordhavn Serenity , we incorporated special sentimental pieces of art from the owner’s personal collection. Many owners wish for their yacht interiors to reflect their personality, ambitions and achievements and to emulate their desires.

yacht interior art

For both the 120’ Nordhavn Aurora and the 96’ Nordhavn VivieRae II , we commissioned art from various emerging artist. The owner’s of the 120’ Nordhavn Aurora desired art that spoke to them and that would add depth and color throughout. The owners of the 96’ Nordhavn VivieRae II desired art that would bring in color and a playfulness that reflected their personality and how they like to use their yacht.

yacht interior art

We just completed our accessory selections and are in the process of commissioning art for the new 125’ Westport. In this particular project the owner is the builder. When designing the yacht interiors for speculative market it must appeal to anyone in the market for a new yacht. For this particular design, we chose to put a modern twist on romantic style.

While we don’t subscribe to every trend, we do enjoy implementing some. Lately, classic design rules are being disregarded in order to achieve individuality and creativity. Mixing metal finishes was once unacceptable in both wardrobe and decor, but there is a growing trend toward doing this that is now being sought after and embraced! Mixing metals creates contrast and a subtle blend of tones and accents that is a stylish way to add impact, depth and dimension to a space and a contemporary and glamorous feeling.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

Because the 125’ Westport is being built on spec, we decided to keep the permanent fixtures such as plumbing, door and cabinet hardware polished chrome and bring gold accents in with accessories and artwork. Although silver and gold are timeless materials, if a buyer comes along who is opposed to gold, it can be easily replaced.

While the majority of the metal finishes throughout are chrome, the touches of gold throughout will be delightfully unexpected and make a sophisticated statement.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

Crystals and agate are being seen more and more in interiors. They are said to promote healing, relaxation and romance and create an organic and serene ambiance. Since we decided to design the 125’ Westport in a modern romantic style, we of course had to incorporate a few crystal and agate pieces throughout adding a bit of spiritual and luxurious glamour while other bold and contrasting elements help to retain modern and masculine sensibilities and balance.

Yacht Interiors Blog: Art Sense

Senses play an integral role in emotions. I want my clients to look around their yacht interiors and see expressions of the things they want to feel. It’s all about appealing to the senses and creating a space that’s as unique as it’s owner.

Interior design: the art of detail

Meticulous in our approach and sophisticated in our creativity with an unwavering eye for detail, Vripack addresses every interior yacht design project with an owner’s sense of pride and personalisation. Each phase is an exploration of discovery, moving from inspiration to realisation to final custom design. From the moment you select Vripack to design your yacht interior, the inventive adventure begins.

It all starts from a source of inspiration. The texture of a pure wool carpet. The dramatic striped grain of macassar ebony. The warmth of gold running through Calacatta Oro marble. A mood board is the opener, drawing on colours and finishes, evoking memories and feelings. It’s the essence of a yacht’s onboard ambience, from where all design roads spark creativity.

HAND-DRAWN SKETCH

Next comes the hand-drawn sketch, which brings life to the page. It translates a vision from mind to paper and is fluid and evolving in its anticipation of the space. By drawing upon the draughtsman’s skill and design experience, a sketch sets the interior direction, gifting the client a first glimpse at the look and feel of their yacht.

Vripack Design - handmade sketches - interior design process - 3D sketch of the dining area

INTERIOR DETAILING

Here is where an interior begins to take on an identity. The art of design is in the detail, first imagined by hand, then defined in a rendering. It incorporates texture, finishes, reflection and shadow. It’s the realistic imagining of an interior space, portraying angles and curves in measured accuracy. Transitioned from rough sketch to detailed computer rendering, the design gradually comes to life.

Vripack Design - Detail sketching of the furniture - 3D sketches

Moving through the stages, from theory to practice, the mock-up is authentication of the design. What begins with drawings and sample selections soon becomes a physical creation. It’s the client’s opportunity to understand and validate the quality of craftsmanship and finishes. Where final materials are selected, and specifics are confirmed.

CUSTOM FURNITURE

A knurled brass door handle to match your favourite bag. A personalised shade of turquoise linen to reflect your love of the sea. From the style of stitch in a leather trim to the height and slant of the master suite headboard, every piece of furniture, both large and small, is customised to a client’s individual preference. The attention to detail is unrivalled. The sense of creativity wholly bespoke.

Custom furniture - Creative Design - Vripack - Bespoke furniture

CUSTOM LIGHTING

At the heart of a yacht interior is sophisticated ambient lighting. From the diffused lighting of a deep sunken spotlight to concealed lighting on window mullions to a dramatic bespoke chandelier in the aft salon. How a space is illuminated sets the tone, transitioning from warm morning hues through to a refined sundown setting.

Interior Design - Interior engineering - Technical details - Custom made chandelier

FULL VISUAL

The big reveal. The moment of truth. A full visual rendering pulls all the details together, framing an interior in its entirety. The seating arrangement juxtaposed with the dining area, offering space and privacy. The flow of movement between bedroom and en suite, encouraging restful living. The reflection of a backlit onyx bar captured in the surface of a bespoke coffee table. It’s all presented as one in the final renderings.

VR WALK -THROUGH

The use of virtual reality – something that Vripack pioneered – is integral to yacht design. Look up, look down, rotate 360-degrees all around. It includes space planning, sight lines and the entire ergonomic layout. Virtual reality enables the fine-tuning of a turnkey design solution, revolutionising the flexibility of an interior project early on. Just as significant is the freedom it gifts a client to experience and approve all elements of the design without even leaving their home.

FLY-THROUGH VIDEOS

A sketch or computer rendering gives a flavour of the finished interior, but a fly-though video portrays a comprehensive design vision. The way each element relates to one another. The dynamism of the space. A fly-through provides an immersive and holistic representation, inside and out, with views from above giving a sense of the whole yacht, including how outdoor spaces relate to the interior design within.

Interior design

Aboard a yacht, great spaces need not be the most glamorous or luxurious – it is how personal and interesting they are, how much they reflect its owner and their character, which lends a profound welcome..

At Sinot, interiors are designed to the highest standards and customized according to the wishes of the clients, imprinting their personality, ambitions, background and achievements. Each detail of the layout and space is skillfully crafted and shaped, while incorporating technical innovation. Rare woods and veneers are integrated with the finest fabrics, leathers and bespoke metals and glass, combined with custom-built interiors and furniture.

The interior and exterior design, styling and furniture present the yacht as a ‘total work of art’, with multiple art and craft forms to create an overall design. This aesthetic term, which has been used in architecture from the renaissance to the days of early modernism, encapsulates all conceivable exterior and interior design aspects; the overall styling, integration of innovative technology, space planning aboard, the use of daylight and artificial light, architectural details, comfort, furniture design, custom decoration and art pieces.

The Structure of Space

Super yachts, as both extremely elaborate pieces of professional equipment and meticulously crafted and superbly-detailed luxurious homes, require a balanced and highly-organized spatial structure. Planning and designing its form, space and ambience to incorporate functional, technical, social, environmental and aesthetic considerations within a restricted space perimeter demands the most from all professionals involved in the yacht realization process.

The most important objective for our team of designers is to harmonize all space demands and the best possible routing. Routes are intertwined, horizontally, across the decks, and vertically, between the decks, and need to be in compliance with classification and regulations. The routes must be guided to the functional needs of the owner and his guests, with the most efficient use of space to give them the maximum amount of space aboard. Routing for crew is designed for seamless invisible service and for smooth operation of all behind-the-scenes processes.

The Art of Lighting

Capable of enhancing and enriching the visual experience aboard, light is a multi-faceted element affecting color, functionality, aesthetics, health, atmosphere, safety, intimacy and comfort. We always aim to find the perfect balance between daylight and artificial light. Naturally versatile, daylight is maximized with large windows and fold-away façades. Shading is provided by layering the window dressing to adjust to different climates and weather types. Artificial light is positioned to merge with the daylight, allowing a smooth transition between the brightest of daylight, via the mellow tones of twilight, into the blackness of the darkest night.

Sinot works with state-of-the-art, digitized and computerized light control systems, sensors and LED light sources to allow flexible application of light. The beauty of light is showcased by skillful choice of fixtures or custom-designs loose lighting fixtures of the finest materials, which are in perfect balance with the interior design of the yacht to create an overall personal and intimate atmosphere.

The Importance of Detailing

An architectural detail is a small part of the whole, explicit enough to characterize and define the entire yacht. They portray what a design is and are fundamental to the personality of a space and indicative of the designer’s attitude toward the design in general. In this respect, a detail is architecture at its smallest size, from man-size to miniscule. Sinot’s mastery in craftsmanship and design comes to life in joining the different functionalities, materials and designs. True quality, whether of technical, aesthetic or spiritual nature, can be distinguished in details. Connections between walls and ceilings, skirting boards, decorative material endings, an intricate handrail, refined tap or a door handle can make the difference and all cooperate to achieve a lasting and quintessential quality result.

The Touch of Comfort

Comfort can be induced by a variety of conditions within our habitat and in the built environment, such as ergonomics and functionality, use and interaction, experience and mood, touching and feeling, contrast and harmony. They all are an integral part of the design processes at Sinot and the Sinot design team takes pride in working with the client to align the different disciplines to achieve true comfort.

Spatial comfort is a key concern, addressing the visual senses, sound and climate. Sinot ensures daylight and artificial light are adjustable and easy to operate, the use of materials to allow for a natural sound, filtering away rumble and exterior noise and state-of-the-art climate settings which are highly customized for individual preferences.

The array of materials, fabrics and textures surrounding us are responsible for the sensation of physical comfort to the touch; they are always sourced by Sinot from the world’s best suppliers.

Custom built Furniture

Most clients dream about a yacht created to match their desires, reflecting their personality, their ambitions and achievements. Custom furniture is a significant part of this dream and it should fit as one with the yacht, but should also stand as a piece of art, provide the ultimate in comfort and functionality.

At Sinot, the finest woods and veneers are used, combined with exclusive fabrics and leathers and elaborately polished metals. Unrivaled craftsmanship and the use of rich surface technologies in the finishes underscore the choice of components. Furniture hardware such as pulls and knobs are custom designed and built to add a notable finishing touch, both visually and in terms of handling. Custom-built pieces in limited editions create a lasting impression of quality. Furnishing and fabrics allow for further personalization of the furniture aboard the yacht.

Arts & Crafts

In the world of bespoke luxury, the difference is in ultimate refinement. A handmade stitching or a hand-built door handle, custom-designed decoration or exclusive art pieces and priceless antiques. Designed or selected by the Sinot design team for their exclusivity, character, style and personality in compliance with the overall design, giving the yachts a special touch that makes them personal and exceptional.

Dedicated Inspiration

Artists and craftsmen from all over the world, whatever their specialism or discipline, agree on one thing: the best and most beautiful things in the world must be felt within the heart..

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” stated a famous artist more than a century ago, referring to the mirroring role of art. Art reflects the dreams and desires of its owner and paints a picture about personality and characteristics, yet defies any rationale by adding mystery and autonomy under the veil of exquisite beauty.

Dedicated to inspiration, craftsmanship and the arts, the Sinot team works closely with clients to explore the use of art pieces and decorative objects. A close cooperation with an exclusive group of globally esteemed artists and galleries enables clients to either make selections from famous collections or commission pieces, according to their taste and budget. For decoration, Sinot selects or designs desirable objects, wall panels, sculptures, glassware objects and refined accessories to complete the design and make the yacht as unique as its owner.

What is Boat Interior Design?

Boat or Nautical interior design is the art and science of creating functional, breathtaking living spaces within the boundaries of a watercraft. It involves carefully planning and arranging elements such as furniture, cabinetry, textiles, and lighting to optimize space utilization with maximum comfort and style. Boat interior designers must consider the unique challenges posed by marine environments, including limited space, fluctuating temperatures, and exposure to moisture and salt water. They often incorporate nautical themes, colors, and materials to create a life-at-sea ambiance.

Boat Interior Ideas for Seafarers

If you’re looking for some sailboat interior inspiration, we’ve put together a list of some boat design ideas for you:

1. Maximize Vertical Space

Make efficient use of the vertical dimensions of your boat by installing floor-to-ceiling shelving units or hanging organizers in the cabin area for storing essentials like books, kitchenware, and personal belongings. These storage solutions not only help keep essentials organized but also free up valuable floor space for easy movement onboard.

2. Multifunctional Furniture

Invest in versatile, minimalist furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes and allow you to make the most out of limited space without compromising on functionality. Consider options like sofa beds with built-in storage compartments or folding tables for your saloon area. A dining table that doubles as a workspace, or ottomans with hidden storage is great for lounge or seating areas.

3. Storage Solutions

Smart storage solutions such as under-floor compartments in sleeping quarters can help stow away bulky items such as bedding or luggage. Wall-mounted cabinets and pull-out drawers are perfect for the galley or kitchen area, keeping cookware, utensils, and provisions easily accessible yet out of sight. These small boat interior ideas contribute to a clutter-free environment.

4. Bespoke Cabinets

Design custom cabinets for minimalist organization tailored to your boat’s layout and specific storage needs. From storage solutions in the cockpit for boating gear to specialized compartments in the saloon for electronics or entertainment systems, custom-built cabinets ensure efficient use of space throughout the vessel.

5. Pick a Nautical Color Palette

We all love colors! Choose a calm color palette inspired by nautical interior design. Pick subtle shades like baby blue, pristine white, soft gray, and sun-kissed sand or vibrant colors like bright blue, green, and turquoise. These calming hues are the perfect base colors that evoke the serenity of the sea and create a light atmosphere onboard. Complement these hues by adding accents of navy, red, or yellow to tie the color palette together and enhance the maritime theme.

6. Accentuate with Marine Motifs

Include marine decorating concepts to add personality to your boat’s interior. Consider using decorative items such as marine motifs, anchor-patterned bedding, cushions, rope accents, or seashell-shaped ornaments to infuse a touch of maritime charm into your living and dining space and reflect your passion for seafaring adventures.

7. Use of Mirrors

Another interesting pick on our list of boat interior ideas is the use of mirrors. Place mirrors strategically to maximize natural light and create the illusion of a larger space. Positioning mirrors opposite windows or in narrow passageways such as cabins or saloons can help reflect light throughout the interior, making it feel brighter and more spacious.

8. Luxurious Upholstery

Choose upholstery fabrics and materials that are specially designed for marine environments. Go for options that are resistant to moisture, UV rays, and saltwater exposure, and can withstand harsh conditions of life at sea while maintaining their appearance and comfort in high-traffic areas such as the cockpit or saloon.

9. Textures and Textiles

Layer different textures such as soft wool rugs, comfy velvet cushions, and woven throws to add warmth and coziness to your boat interior ideas . Mixing textures adds richness, making the space feel comfortable for onboard relaxation.

10. Natural Elements

Incorporate natural elements like wood accents in the cabinetry and furnishings throughout the boat. Bamboo furniture, or stone countertops in the galley area add a touch of natural luxury and texture. These organic materials add warmth and bring the outdoors inside creating a harmonious connection with the marine environment.

11. Multilayering

Layer up your interior elements using the right furniture, décor, and accessories. For example, for maritime living space ideas, place smooth leather or rough jute sofas with knitted throws while glossy ceramics can sit on a smart coffee table positioned on a woven rug. This keeps the eye moving by creating a rich and multi-dimensional space.

12. Custom Mattresses

Indulge in custom-made mattresses or mattress toppers that are tailored to fit the unique shapes and dimensions of your boat’s sleeping berths. Engineered for optimal support and relaxation, these bespoke mattresses ensure a restful night’s sleep amidst the gentle sway of the ocean, elevating your overall onboard experience.

13. Maximize Natural Light

For your boat interior ideas , flood up your space with sunlight to enhance the luminous allure of your interior. Install large windows, elegant skylights, or intricately crafted portholes to maximize natural light penetration. Natural light not only brightens up the space but also creates a connection with the surrounding seascape, improving the overall feel onboard.

14. Lighting

Install reading lamps, or adjustable spotlights to provide focused illumination for nighttime activities. Under-cabinet lights are used mainly in the galley or kitchen area for cooking, reading, or working onboard. These refined lighting solutions ensure you have enough light wherever and whenever you need it. Ambient lighting features such as LED strips, recessed lighting, or wall sconces create unforgettable moments amidst the enchanting beauty of the open sea. These atmospheric lighting solutions set the mood for different activities and occasions onboard.

15. Nautical Art

For yacht décor ideas, incorporate nautical-themed artwork that resonates with your love for the sea. Approach local artisans or talented artists who specialize in marine-inspired creations, such as seascapes, sailboats, or underwater scenes. Whether it’s a custom painting, a sculpture, or a beautiful wall mural, nautical artwork completes the boat interior by adding a bit of you to your yacht’s living spaces. Go ahead and celebrate your passion for maritime adventures!

Final Words

In conclusion, these boat interior ideas offer a roadmap for renovating your vessel’s interior. Optimizing your boat or yacht’s interior design is a journey of creativity, functionality, and personal expression. With careful planning, attention to detail, innovative storage solutions, versatile furniture pieces, and thoughtful design elements, you can transform your onboard space into a luxurious retreat that reflects your lifestyle and enhances your maritime adventures.

yacht interior art

Welcome to the world of yacht interior design, a realm where luxury meets creativity on the high seas. This fascinating field goes beyond ordinary interior design, combining aesthetics with the practical needs of a maritime environment. Singapore, with its beautiful marinas and love for the sea, is a thriving hub for yachting enthusiasts. Whether you’re a yacht owner, aspiring to be one, or simply curious about this luxurious lifestyle, this article will guide you through the unique art of yacht interior design.

Yacht interiors aren’t just about looking good; they’re about creating a harmonious balance between elegance, practicality, and the challenges of the sea. From the sleek decks at Keppel Bay to the luxurious yachts at ONE°15 Marina, Singapore’s yachting scene reflects a diverse range of interior styles and innovations. In this article, we’ll dive into the essentials of yacht interior design, explore different themes and styles, and discuss how technology is transforming these floating paradises.

So, whether you’re cruising along the Straits of Johor or docked at Sentosa Cove, let’s embark on a journey to understand the intricate and luxurious world of yacht interior design.

Understanding Yacht Interior Design

Yacht interior design is more than just decorating a boat; it’s about creating a functional, yet luxurious space in a limited and constantly moving environment. Unlike static homes or offices, yachts are subject to the whims of the sea. This means every aspect of their design needs to consider balance, weight, and durability, alongside the aesthetic appeal.

For Singaporeans, yacht design holds particular relevance. In a city-state known for its affluence and penchant for luxury, yachts are a symbol of status and sophistication. Additionally, given Singapore’s geographical location, yachting can be a common leisure activity, making the design of these vessels an important aspect of the maritime experience.

Yacht interior design differs from other types of design in several key ways. Firstly, space is at a premium. Designers must work within the confines of the yacht’s dimensions, finding creative ways to maximize space without sacrificing style or comfort. Secondly, everything in a yacht interior must be secured and stable to withstand the motion of the sea. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the design process.

Key Elements of Yacht Interior Design

When it comes to designing the inside of a yacht, there are several critical aspects to consider. These elements are not just about making the yacht look good; they’re about combining style with practicality. This section will guide you through these essential elements, crucial for anyone interested in yacht design, especially in a place like Singapore, where yachting is both a passion and a symbol of prestige.

Layout and Spatial Planning : The first and most important aspect is the layout. Designers must be clever in using every inch of space available. This involves creating multi-functional areas that can serve various purposes without feeling cramped or cluttered. Foldable furniture, hidden storage compartments, and convertible spaces are common solutions.

Material Selection : The materials used in a yacht’s interior need to be not only stylish but also lightweight and durable. Heavy materials can affect the yacht’s balance and performance, while fragile ones may not withstand the sea’s movements. Therefore, materials like lightweight woods, reinforced glass, and corrosion-resistant metals are popular choices. For those in Singapore’s humid climate, it’s also essential to choose materials that can withstand moisture.

Color and Light : Using color and light effectively is vital in yacht interiors. Light colors often make spaces appear larger and more open, a valuable trick in confined areas. Natural light is maximized through cleverly placed windows, and artificial lighting is used to create the right mood and ambiance.

Furniture and Fittings : In yacht interiors, furniture must be both luxurious and functional. It often needs to be custom-made to fit specific dimensions and to be securely anchored. The choice of upholstery is equally important, with a focus on materials that are both comfortable and resistant to sun and water damage.

Understanding these key elements is crucial for anyone in Singapore looking to delve into yacht interior design, whether as a designer, a yacht owner, or just an enthusiast. These factors ensure that a yacht’s interior is not only beautiful but practical and safe for journeys at sea. In the following sections, we will look at how these elements come together in various design themes and styles, and how technology is increasingly playing a role in yacht interiors.

Design Themes and Styles in Yacht Interiors

Yacht interiors can be as diverse and personalized as the owners themselves. In Singapore, where style and innovation are highly valued, yacht interiors often reflect a mix of traditional elegance and modern luxury. Let’s explore some of the popular design themes and styles:

Classic Elegance : This style is characterized by its timeless appeal, featuring rich woods, ornate furnishings, and classic color palettes. It’s about bringing the grandeur of traditional maritime design into the modern era. Such designs often appeal to yacht owners who appreciate the history and heritage of seafaring.

Modern and Minimalist : In contrast, modern yacht interiors are all about clean lines, minimal color schemes, and uncluttered spaces. This style is popular among those who prefer a more contemporary, sleek look. It often utilizes high-tech materials and incorporates the latest in design trends.

Thematic Designs : Some yacht owners in Singapore choose to have a theme for their yacht’s interior. This could range from nautical themes, which pay homage to the sea with blues and whites and maritime décor, to more exotic themes like tropical or art deco. Thematic designs allow for a high degree of personalization and can create a unique atmosphere onboard.

Bespoke Design : Bespoke or custom design is perhaps the epitome of yacht interior design. Here, every element of the interior is tailored to the owner’s preferences, from the layout to the choice of artworks. Bespoke designs are exclusive and often involve collaborations with top designers and artisans.

Each of these styles brings its own charm and challenges to the world of yacht interior design. Understanding these styles not only helps in appreciating the diversity of yacht interiors but also aids in making informed choices when considering a design for a yacht. Next, we will look at how technology is seamlessly integrated into yacht interiors, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.

Technological Integration in Yacht Interiors

In today’s world, technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and luxury of yacht interiors. This is particularly true in Singapore, a hub for technology and innovation. The integration of cutting-edge tech in yacht design not only brings convenience and efficiency but also adds an element of modern sophistication that appeals to many yacht enthusiasts in the region.

Innovations in Marine Technology : Recent advancements in marine technology have had a significant impact on yacht interior design. From improved navigation systems to advanced stabilization mechanisms, technology ensures a safer and more comfortable journey. These innovations also allow for more creative freedom in design, as space can be utilized more efficiently.

Smart Systems for Automation and Entertainment : Automation is a key feature in modern yacht interiors. Lighting, climate control, and entertainment systems can all be controlled at the touch of a button or even remotely. High-definition audio-visual systems, retractable televisions, and integrated sound systems are common features that enhance the onboard experience.

Eco-friendly and Sustainable Design Practices : As awareness of environmental issues grows, there’s an increasing demand for sustainable practices in yacht design. This includes the use of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient lighting, and solar panels. In Singapore, where sustainability is becoming a priority, such eco-friendly practices are not only desirable for their reduced environmental impact but also for their innovation and efficiency.

The integration of technology in yacht interiors is a dynamic and ever-evolving field. It not only adds to the luxury and comfort but also reflects the owner’s values, particularly in regions like Singapore where technology and sustainability are highly valued. Next, we will explore the design process of yacht interiors, from conception to realization.

The Design Process

Creating a yacht interior that is both beautiful and functional is a detailed process involving several stages. This journey from the initial concept to the final realization is fascinating, especially in a place like Singapore where precision and attention to detail are highly regarded.

Initial Concept and Client Consultation : The process usually begins with understanding the client’s vision and requirements. This involves discussions about the desired style, functionality, and any specific needs or preferences. It’s important for designers to get a clear idea of what the client wants to achieve with their yacht’s interior.

Design Development : Based on the initial consultations, designers start developing concepts. This stage includes sketching layouts, choosing materials, and considering color schemes. It’s a collaborative process, often involving feedback and approval from the client at various stages. 3D renderings and virtual tours can also be used to give clients a realistic view of the proposed design.

Technical Considerations : Yacht interior design is not just about aesthetics; it also involves a lot of technical planning. This includes space planning, weight distribution, and ensuring that all elements comply with maritime safety regulations. In Singapore, adherence to these technical aspects is crucial due to the strict maritime standards.

Collaboration with Naval Architects and Builders : Interior designers often work closely with naval architects and builders. This collaboration ensures that the design is not only visually appealing but also structurally sound and functional. The designer’s vision needs to align with the technical realities of the yacht’s construction.

Implementation and Final Touches : Once the design is finalized and approved, the implementation phase begins. This involves the actual construction, installation of interiors, and adding final touches like décor items. The process requires precise coordination, especially when custom-made elements are involved.

Client Handover : The final step is the handover to the client, where they see their vision transformed into reality. This is often a moment of great satisfaction for both the client and the design team.

For Singaporeans, who value both luxury and excellence, understanding this design process can enhance the appreciation of the craftsmanship and expertise involved in creating stunning yacht interiors.

Challenges and Considerations

Designing the interior of a yacht is not without its challenges, especially in a demanding market like Singapore. Each yacht project comes with a unique set of considerations that must be skillfully navigated to achieve the desired outcome.

Dealing with Limited Space and Weight Constraints : One of the biggest challenges in yacht interior design is the efficient use of space. Every element needs to be compact and multi-functional. Weight is another critical factor, as excessive weight can affect the yacht’s performance and balance. Selecting lightweight materials and furniture becomes essential.

Safety Standards and Maritime Regulations : Safety is paramount in yacht design. Everything from the materials used to the design of the furniture must comply with stringent safety standards and maritime regulations. This is particularly important in Singapore, known for its strict adherence to safety protocols.

Balancing Luxury with Functionality : Achieving a balance between luxurious aesthetics and practical functionality is a key challenge. While yacht interiors should exude sophistication and comfort, they also need to be durable and easy to maintain, given the marine environment’s harsh conditions.

Customization Demands : Many yacht owners in Singapore seek highly customized interiors to reflect their personal style and needs. This demand for customization can pose a challenge in terms of both design and execution, requiring unique solutions and careful planning.

Cultural and Regional Considerations : In a diverse region like Singapore, cultural preferences and regional styles can influence yacht interior design. Designers need to be aware of these cultural nuances and incorporate them into their designs where appropriate.

Environmental Impact : With growing awareness about environmental sustainability, designers are increasingly looking at ways to reduce the environmental impact of yachts. This includes using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems.

As the yacht interior design industry continues to evolve, these icons set the standard for luxury, innovation, and craftsmanship.

Future Trends in Yacht Interior Design

As we look toward the future, yacht interior design is poised to evolve in exciting ways. In a place like Singapore, where there’s a keen interest in both luxury and technological advancement, these trends are particularly relevant. Here are some of the upcoming trends that are expected to shape the future of yacht interior design:

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Designs : Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in all areas of design, and yacht interiors are no exception. Future designs are likely to feature more eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and systems that minimize the yacht’s environmental impact. This might include the use of recycled materials, solar panels, and innovative waste management systems.

Smart and Connected Interiors : As homes become smarter, so too will yachts. We can expect to see more integration of IoT (Internet of Things) technology in yacht interiors, allowing for even greater automation and connectivity. This could include everything from voice-activated controls to advanced security systems that can be monitored remotely.

Space Optimization and Flexibility : With the continuous challenge of limited space, designers are likely to focus even more on optimizing every inch of the interior. This might involve innovative furniture designs that can be easily transformed for different purposes or retractable elements that can change the layout of a space on demand.

Personalization and Customization : The trend towards bespoke design is expected to grow, with owners wanting their yachts to reflect their personal tastes and lifestyles more closely. This could lead to more collaborations with artists and artisans to create unique, tailor-made interiors.

Innovative Materials and Textures : Future yacht interiors might experiment with new materials and textures that combine luxury with functionality. This could include advanced composites, smart textiles, and materials with unique properties like enhanced durability or the ability to change color or pattern.

Wellness-Centered Design : As wellness becomes a greater priority for many, yacht interiors might also reflect this trend. This could manifest in designs that emphasize natural light, incorporate greenery, or use color and materials to create a more relaxing and healthful environment.

The art of yacht interior design is a complex yet fascinating field that combines luxury, functionality, and technical precision. For Singaporeans, living in a city-state renowned for its blend of innovation and luxury, understanding yacht rentals and its interiors is more than just an insight into a lavish lifestyle; it’s about appreciating a unique form of art that marries the challenges of marine architecture with the elegance of design. As we move forward, the evolution of yacht design will continue to reflect changing technologies, lifestyles, and values, always pushing the boundaries of what is possible in creating extraordinary maritime experiences.

Artwork on Here Comes the Sun

Buyer's guide: How to create the ultimate superyacht art collection

Whether you want to commission new art pieces for your superyacht or keep existing works pristine, Claire Wrathall gives you the lowdown

"I don’t believe in art on the high seas,” art dealer and Hollywood producer Arne Glimcher once told me. The founder of Pace Gallery, which deals in works by the likes of Picasso and Rothko, and former owner of the 37-metre Luca Brenta -designed Vitters yacht Ghost , Glimcher loves sailing and art, but believes some passions are best kept separate. “It would have been dangerous to have works of art on board, absolutely irresponsible. I like to be able to have the hatches open and fresh air in the boat.”

Protect your art from salt, humidity and temperature extremes by displaying it in parts of the yacht where the elements can be shut out, however, and there’s no reason superyachts can’t be as safe as galleries. “If you’re inside and you don’t feel too cold or too hot, then the art will be fine too,” says London-based dealer Adrian Sassoon. Just as on land, the main problems are direct sunlight and clumsiness. The former will damage photographs, watercolours and other works on paper, though UV-resistant glass, blinds and judicious placement can mitigate this.

But there are many more robust media. With metalwork or ceramics, says Sassoon, “the work should retain the same strength and depth of colours it would have had when it left the kiln”. As to the risk of knocking something over, small sculptures and objets d’art may actually be safer on a yacht, because in a marine environment they are invariably stuck down with “museum glue” that adheres objects to surfaces to stop them shifting in a swell.

Perhaps it’s not surprising then that remarkable assemblages of art are kept aboard yachts to no detrimental effect. When in 2018 David Hockney’s acrylic-on-canvas Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90.3 million (£69m), at the time the most a work by a living artist had ever fetched, the fact that it had previously hung among a collection of valuable paintings on Aviva , the 68-metre superyacht belonging to the businessman Joe Lewis, had clearly done it no harm.

Some collectors commission boats to reflect their art. “I actually designed [ Sea Force One ] around my pieces,” the hedge fund manager Raffaele Costa told me of his 53-metre yacht, when she was refitted in 2013. “Art should be an integral part of any design.” Others customise their art to fit their yachts. The Hamburg-based art adviser Tilman Kriesel is a fund of such tales: the Rothko fixed horizontally rather than vertically as the artist intended; or, worse, the Takashi Murakami, likely to have been worth at least seven figures intact, that was cut to size to fit on a wall in a yacht’s beach club.

Too often decisions about the art are taken at the end of the process and not at the beginning, says Sassoon. “An art collection is naturally an accumulation, not the result of a single shopping trip. And variety is really important.” That said, “most commonly it’s the designers who end up choosing the artwork”, says  Selina McCabe, a partner at Winch Design . Buying or “commissioning pieces of art is an exciting part of the process”. Especially works for spaces that have been designed to be multifunctional, in which case “the art needs to be easily movable depending on how the space is used”, and appropriate wall finishes can be specified accordingly.

Others, like Rémi Tessier , designer of Nahlin and Vava II , insist contractually on oversight of the art lest an owner’s taste “ruin [my] reputation among art collectors. I would not work for a person who just put whatever on the wall.”

Mark Berryman , a specialist in contemporary yacht interiors , takes a more pragmatic view. “Personally, I absolutely love abstract art,” he says. “So whenever I’m designing, I always have in mind the art that I would put in there if it was my interior.” But there’s no second-guessing a client’s taste, and it may be that “what they’ve got in mind is something very classical, or a Klimt. It’s a personal taste until you broach the subject, it really is an unknown. We’ve done a couple of refits where the client has asked for landscapes and very representational work, and sometimes that just doesn’t sit well on a boat in the middle of the ocean. It can feel a little jarring.”

He, too, believes it is best to begin with the art. Too often it’s treated as an afterthought and left till the end of the process. “You can still make it work,” he says. “But it becomes much more difficult if you then decide to commission half a dozen pieces.”

When he designed the refit of Indian Empress (now H ), for example, “the client already had a lot of art on board, and it was great, but the interior was really shouting at it. They were completely different styles.” The art was modern and contemporary, much of it Indian. The yacht was very traditional. And the owner knew it wasn’t working. “He said. ‘You decide where it fits best, but I do want to use it all.’”

Berryman also points to the interiors of Mary-Jean II , which were to some extent influenced by its owner’s collection of pop art, notably Warhol. “We’d seen the collection in their houses and in storage, so we knew what they wanted to use and went for something very contemporary,” to showcase it the better.

But existing collections aren’t always suitable for yachts. “Steer clear of works incorporating ivory or coral or other natural materials on the CITES [Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora] endangered list,” warns Sassoon, because they may cause your captain grief as the yacht travels into certain jurisdictions and, worse, risk confiscation. So be wary of Damien Hirst’s butterfly collages and leave the Polly Morgan snakes at home. Works incorporating taxidermy, even seashells, can be a red flag to customs officials.

One way to obviate any such issue is commission the art from scratch, hence companies such as DKT Artworks . Founded by three art-school alumni and employing about 40 highly skilled craftspeople,  it creates and fabricates everything from mosaics to faux-art deco bas-reliefs, contemporary lightbox installations and trompe-l’oeil murals. Its work can be found on yachts such as DAR , Dilbar , Excellence , Here Comes the Sun , Kismet , Luna and Tis .

If you tire of them, you won’t easily  be able to sell them on the secondary market – but DKT Artworks’ carved and relief panels are, says marketing chief Guglielmo Carrozzo, “very popular at the moment, especially for staircases, [which are] one of the few places on a vessel where you can see what’s going on on different decks”. A bas-relief can be a way of bringing everything together, he says. Commissioning a work means it can not only reflect the owners’ taste, but be sized to fill a specific space.

The Czech glass and crystal design company Preciosa is another translator of ideas into fully realised statements of artistry. Take the 11.2-metre chandelier designed by Seattle-based Susan Young, to evoke bubbles rising to the surface, that it made for Aquila when the 85-metre yacht was refitted by Pendennis in 2016. Descending through four storeys through the yacht’s central spiral staircase, it incorporates more than 850 individually blown-glass pieces.

Few materials can conjure the idea of water as effectively as glass, hence the sculptures produced by Lasvit, another long-established Czech company. Its works can be found on superyachts such as the 77-metre Turquoise Go , for which Lasvit’s Katarína Kudějová Fulínová created an installation of 378 hand-blown crystal rods, each containing its own light source, that when illuminated conjure an image of undulating seagrass on the ceiling above. Inspired by nature but abstract in form, it’s a working light fitting, but also, she hopes, a creation that “opens space for our imagination and functions as a window into our subconscious”. And ultimately, isn’t that the purpose of art?

Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Sitting area inside a yacht

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool.

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way.

Swan 98, Be Cool

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Sunreef, Kokomo

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Seating room with glassbottomed pool above it.

The glass-bottom pool is a highlight of the yacht.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

Seating area on a yacht

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

Making a Boat a Home: The Art of Decorating A Boat

Windtraveler- boat interior

Many of you write us asking what the inside of our boat looks like. I’ve got some older pictures posted on our “ Boat ” page, but – as I mentioned back in the British Virgin Islands - we have been doing some redecorating, so things look a little different.

Let me start by saying that I am the type of person who revels in her surroundings. I need to live in a nice space. It doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy or perfectly coordinated, but a clean, cosy and organized living space is a must for me. Some might call it a a trait of the “fairer sex”, but believe me when I say I’ve met several women who could care less about their boat’s interiors. To each his own. But for me? It’s gotta look nice and it’s gotta be comfortable. To me, comfort is synonymous with happy cruising. Call it OCD, call it ‘being anal’ call it what you will – but clutter and chaos make me edgy, antsy and all out of sorts. Luckily, we bought a boat with so much storage we still have a load of empty spaces, so being clutter-free is not a problem for us. Point for the bigger boat…

Even still, when living on a boat function must always take precedence over form, so the phrase “interior decorating” is laughable. While there are plenty of ways to personalize and get creative, when it comes to a boat’s insides, for the most part, what you see is what you get. There’s no moving things around or rearranging furniture and your affinity for feng shui will have to fly out the porthole. You must be very mindful of anything frivolous and non-essential that you mount, place or hang, lest they become projectiles on a rough passage. That said, the inside of a boat and how “pretty” it looks should be the least of your concerns when boat shopping, but still – gorgeous interiors have sold more of their fair share of shoddy boats so it goes to show that not everyone is all function out here.

I like to think of us as a little of both (form and function); sure Scott could care less about our new throw pillows or the colors of our bedspread, but he also knows these things make me happy and so he let’s me go about my meager decorating attempts with little resistance. I tend to veer away from the “nautical” theme that so many seem to favor out here…after all, we do live on a boat, I don’t think we need lighthouse pillows and seashell wall accents to punctuate it – but that’s us. To personalize our space, we added some cheap non-skid floor mats, some professionally framed posters that have special meaning to us (we are from Chicago, we met and married in St. Joe). We also added some nice, colorful throw pillows, some custom baskets and storage containers and a few special knick-knacks we’ve collected here and there throughout the islands. Everything is mounted either with industrial strength velcro or museum putty (I love the stuff!!!) and we have been in pretty rough seas with nary a casualty. “A place for everything and everything in its place” as they say…

So with no further ado, here are some pics and a little tour of how we made our boat our home…

Our navigation station with all of Isla’s toys underneath. We plan on converting this to a forward facing nav station with a seat…to be continued…

This is looking aft at the expanded view of our walk-through – TONS of storage here. Full engine access is to the right.

Aft cabin. Again, tons of storage, king sized bed and we each have a built in “night stand” of sorts (not pictured)

Another view of the aft head – we have old fashioned rum labels mounted on wood on the starboard side – you can only see one but there are four. Very cool and brighten up the bathroom.

Our galley. As much as I despise cooking, I love this galley. Huge refrigerator with top and bottom door access as well as a HUGE locker for pots, pans and all the other kitchen equipment I hardly ever use.

Isla’s room. The one place where clutter reigns. She loves her little area and we are firm believers that while you CAN have too many toys, you can never have too many books!

When two people, with the same life long dream of sailing around the world find each other, there’s only one thing to do… make it happen! Scott and Brittany departed in 2010 with big plans to “see the world” from the deck of their sailboat. After sailing from Chicago to Trinidad via the “thorny path”, they are now back at it with their first baby and second boat. Check out all the juice at .

Choosing Art for Yachts: Considerations and Tips

Whether you’re a seasoned yacht owner or contemplating a nautical adventure, the process of curating onboard artworks is a crucial one. In this section, we’ll dive into the key considerations and tips when it comes to choosing art for your yacht. We’ll explore the importance of size and scale, the significance of durability and maintenance, and the impact of light and space on showcasing artworks. Get ready to discover how to transform your yacht into a floating gallery that exudes elegance and style.

Size and Scale

When curating onboard artworks for luxury yachts, one crucial consideration is the size and scale of the pieces. The table below showcases the recommended guidelines for size and scale.

Main salon Large-scale artworks such as oversized paintings or wall installations can serve as impactful focal points of interest.
Staterooms Medium-sized artworks that complement the size of the room without overwhelming the space.
Hallways and corridors Smaller artworks or a series of smaller artworks arranged in a cohesive manner.
Outdoor spaces Sculptures or artworks that are weather-resistant and suit the scale of the surroundings.

It is important to note that the size and scale of the artworks should not only be determined by the dimensions of the available wall space but also by the overall aesthetic of the yacht. The artworks should seamlessly blend with the luxury yacht interior and enhance the visual experience of the space.

As a true story, the superyacht owner of Cloud 9, a prominent art collector, carefully considered the size and scale of the artworks for the main salon. Being passionate about contemporary art, he commissioned a renowned contemporary artist to create a stunning TV roller artwork that spanned the entire length of the wall. The impressive scale of the piece not only added a touch of luxury to the space but also created a captivating focal point for guests to admire while onboard.

Durability and Maintenance

Durability and maintenance are crucial factors to consider when curating onboard artworks for yachts. The artworks onboard should be able to withstand the challenging and ever-changing environments at sea while requiring minimal maintenance.

To ensure durability , it is important to choose artworks made with materials that are resistant to corrosion, fading, and water damage. Metals such as stainless steel or bronze and materials like acrylic or resin are suitable for marine environments. Selecting artworks that are sturdy and well-constructed can help ensure their longevity.

Maintenance is a key aspect of preserving the artworks onboard. Regular inspection and cleaning are necessary to prevent the accumulation of dust, salt, or other contaminants that can potentially damage the artwork. Utilizing environmentally friendly cleaning products and techniques is advisable to prevent any harm to the artwork’s integrity.

Considering the accessibility of the artworks for maintenance is vital. Artworks that are easily removable or have detachable components can make maintenance tasks more manageable. Adequate storage space should also be allocated to protect the artworks when they are not on display.

By carefully considering durability and maintenance, yacht owners can ensure that their onboard artworks remain in excellent condition and continue to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their yacht for years to come.

It is recommended to work closely with art consultants, curators, and designers who have extensive experience in selecting and maintaining artworks for yachts. They can provide valuable guidance on choosing durable artworks and offer advice on proper maintenance techniques. Regularly reviewing and updating the artwork archive and implementing environmental controls, especially in extreme high sea cases or when sailing in international waters, can also help protect the artworks.

Light and Space

When curating art for yachts, one important consideration is how the artwork interacts with the yacht’s light and space. The right combination of light and space can enhance the visual impact of the artwork and create a harmonious and luxurious atmosphere onboard.

Proper lighting is essential to showcase the artwork effectively. Natural light can bring out the colors and details of the artwork, so positioning artwork near windows or skylights can provide an optimum lighting solution. Installing adjustable and dimmable lighting systems allows for flexibility in creating different moods and highlighting specific pieces.
Considering the available space is crucial in selecting the right artwork for a yacht. Large-scale artworks can make a bold statement and act as focal points in spacious areas such as the main salon or dining area. For smaller spaces, opting for smaller or medium-sized pieces can create an intimate and cozy ambiance.

Pro-tip: To make the most of the light and space onboard, choose artwork that complements the yacht’s interior design and color palette. Consider collaborating with design partners who have extensive experience in integrating artwork seamlessly into luxury yacht interiors. This ensures that the artwork not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also elevates the overall experience for the yacht owner and guests.

Curating Artwork Themes for Yachts

When it comes to curating artwork themes for yachts, the possibilities are as vast as the sea itself. From nautical and maritime themes that capture the adventurous spirit of the ocean, to serene seascape and underwater themes that immerse you in the beauty below the surface, and luxurious elegance themes that exude class and sophistication, each sub-section offers a unique perspective on yacht art collection. Get ready to set sail on a visual journey as we explore the artistry that can grace the walls of your yacht.

Nautical and Maritime Themes

Nautical and maritime themes are a popular choice when curating artwork for yachts. These themes not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the yacht interior but also create a cohesive and harmonious atmosphere with the surrounding waters. Here are some considerations when selecting nautical and maritime art for your yacht:

1. Capturing the essence of the sea: Choose artwork that depicts the beauty and power of the ocean. Paintings or photographs showcasing crashing waves, serene seascapes, or majestic sailing vessels can create a sense of tranquility and adventure.

2. Symbolism and nautical elements: Incorporate nautical symbols and elements into the artwork to create a cohesive theme. Anchors, compasses, sailboats, and marine life can add visual interest and reinforce the nautical theme.

3. Historical references: Consider artwork that pays homage to maritime history. Paintings or sculptures depicting famous ships, lighthouses, or explorers can add a touch of nostalgia and intrigue to the yacht’s ambiance.

4. Colors and materials: Opt for artwork that incorporates colors commonly found in the maritime setting, such as shades of blue, white, and sandy tones . Artwork created using materials like driftwood, seashells, or marine-inspired textiles can further enhance the nautical theme.

5. Artwork placement: Carefully consider where to display the nautical and maritime artwork. Focal points, such as the main salon or hallways, are ideal locations for showcasing these pieces, allowing guests to appreciate them while immersing themselves in the yacht’s luxurious surroundings.

By following these tips and carefully selecting nautical and maritime artwork, yacht owners can create a captivating and inviting environment on board that reflects their passion for the sea and adds a unique touch to their yacht experience. So set sail and immerse yourself in the beauty of nautical and maritime art.

– Incorporating seashells and coral-inspired artworks can add a delicate and whimsical touch to yacht interiors. These pieces can be created using various mediums such as glass, ceramics, or even natural seashells.

– Artists often explore abstract interpretations of seascape and underwater themes. These artworks can use bold colors , fluid brushstrokes , or imaginative compositions to convey the essence of the ocean and its depths.

– Artists may use a combination of various mediums such as painting, photography, and collage to create visually striking artwork inspired by seascape and underwater scenes. These mixed media pieces can offer a multidimensional and textured aesthetic.

Luxury and Elegance Themes

  • Artists and styles: Choose leading contemporary artists known for their luxurious and elegant aesthetic. Look for artists like Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, or Claude Lorraine, who create artworks that exude sophistication and opulence .
  • Subject matter: Select artworks that depict themes of luxury , such as lavish interiors, exquisite fashion, glamorous events, or high-end destinations. These themes will enhance the overall luxurious atmosphere of the yacht.
  • Medium and materials: Opt for artworks created using high-quality materials that exude luxury, like gold leafing, marble, or fine textiles. The choice of medium and materials can greatly contribute to the elegance and sophistication of the artwork.
  • Placement and focal points: Strategically place the artworks in prominent areas of the yacht, such as the main salon or other spaces where guests gather. These artworks should serve as focal points of interest, drawing attention and adding to the overall luxurious ambiance.

Commissioning Custom Artworks

Commissioning custom artworks for yacht collections is an exhilarating and distinctive process. Instead of settling for pre-existing pieces, yacht owners have the thrilling opportunity to acquire personalized art that perfectly complements their preferences and the design of their yacht. The following are key factors to consider when commissioning custom artworks:

1. Personalization: Indulging in commissioning custom artworks enables yacht owners to possess masterpieces that reflect their individuality and style. These unique artworks can be tailored to match the color scheme, aesthetic, and concept of the yacht’s interior design.

2. Collaboration: Collaborating closely with the artist is an essential aspect of commissioning custom artworks. Yacht owners must effectively communicate their vision, preferences, and requirements to ensure the final artwork meets their expectations.

3. Expertise: Choosing artists with extensive experience and expertise in creating custom artworks for yacht collections is of utmost importance. These artists should comprehend the demands of creating art that can withstand the challenges of being displayed onboard, such as environmental factors and water movement.

4. Size and Scale: When commissioning custom artworks, it is vital to consider the available space and carefully determine the appropriate size and scale. This ensures that the artwork enhances the visual impact without overpowering the yacht’s interior.

5. Subject Matter: Aligning the subject matter of the custom artwork with the yacht owner’s preferences and the overall theme of the yacht is crucial. Inspiration can be drawn from nautical symbols, the graceful movement of water, or other elements that hold personal significance.

6. Budget: The cost of commissioning custom artworks can vary depending on the artist’s reputation, complexity of the artwork, and materials used. It is important for yacht owners to establish their budget in advance and openly discuss it with the artist.

Engaging in commissioning custom artworks empowers yacht owners to possess extraordinary, one-of-a-kind pieces that elevate the aesthetic appeal and personal connection to their yacht. This collaborative process demands thoughtful consideration and effective communication to ensure the perfect artwork is achieved.

Displaying and Securing Art Onboard Yachts

Unlock the beauty of your yacht with captivating onboard artworks! In this section, we dive into the art of displaying and securing art onboard yachts. Discover the secrets behind proper lighting and framing that will accentuate the elegance of your chosen pieces. Learn how to secure your valuable artworks in challenging environments, ensuring their preservation and protection throughout your voyages. Let’s embark on this artistic journey and elevate the ambiance of your yacht to new heights.

Proper Lighting and Framing

Proper lighting and framing are crucial elements to consider when selecting artwork for yachts.

  • Optimal lighting accentuates the visual impact of art pieces by creating a captivating focal point. LED lights, known for their energy efficiency and bright illumination, are commonly utilized. Strategically placed, these lights highlight specific artworks and cultivate a captivating ambiance onboard.
  • Framing plays a vital role in preserving and presenting artworks. High-quality frames not only contribute to the aesthetic value of the artwork but also protect it from potential damage caused by humidity, temperature changes, and yacht movement. Selecting frames that harmonize with the artwork style and overall interior design of the yacht is essential.
  • Installing adjustable lighting fixtures and dimming systems allows for accommodating diverse lighting needs and creating different moods onboard. This flexibility ensures that the artwork can be appreciated under various lighting conditions, optimizing its visibility and impact.
  • In addition to lighting, careful consideration should be given to the placement and positioning of artworks. Utilizing natural light sources facilitates a seamless integration of artwork and surroundings. It is advisable to position artworks away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or discoloration.

By carefully attending to proper lighting and framing , yacht owners can effectively showcase their art collection while preserving it and enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the yacht interior.

Securing Artwork in Challenging Environments

When it comes to securing artwork in challenging environments onboard yachts, there are several factors to consider.

First and foremost, securing artwork in challenging environments is crucial to prevent any damage or accidents. This can be achieved by implementing secure mounting techniques, such as reinforced hooks or brackets. It’s important to take into account the movement of water and ensure that the artwork is placed in a location where it won’t be affected by splashes or strong waves .

In addition to securing the artwork physically, protecting it from theft is equally essential in challenging environments. Yachts can be vulnerable to unauthorized access, so it is recommended to incorporate security measures such as surveillance cameras , alarms , and limited access to certain areas .

Environmental controls should also be taken into account when securing artwork in challenging environments. Yachts often encounter extreme high sea cases and operate in international waters where weather conditions can be unpredictable. Therefore, it is crucial to protect the artwork from moisture , humidity , and temperature fluctuations . This can be accomplished through the use of climate-controlled display cases or the installation of moisture barriers to prevent any damage.

Furthermore, displaying the artwork in a way that seamlessly fits with the yacht’s interior design is important. This entails careful consideration of the artwork’s size and scale, as well as its placement in relation to other points of interest. Proper lighting and framing techniques can enhance the artwork’s visibility and ensure that it stands out in the space.

Securing artwork in challenging environments onboard yachts requires thoughtful planning and the implementation of measures to protect the artwork from damage , theft , and environmental factors . By considering and incorporating these important aspects, yacht owners can enjoy their curated onboard art collection with peace of mind .
