Best performance yachts: Our pick of the top options
- Toby Hodges
- March 10, 2023
Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the performance yachts 2022 category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards
The European Yacht of the Year awards is the most thorough and impartial awards programme – the winners here are widely considered the best yachts of the year . As such the boats nominated by the jury in the performance yachts category can be considered the best of the best.
This year’s shortlist had the full range. From the more conventional definitive style of performance cruiser to the contemporary French interpretation of a lightweight planing cruiser – and even a new brand of sports catamarans for the thrill seekers.
Three Italian pure performance yachts and two very different yachts built in Slovenia made for a varied and exciting Performance Yachts category.
Best performance yachts
Winner best performance yachts 2023 – beneteau first 36.
Where once we could assume a cruiser-racer was a fairly standard format design, over the last decade it’s been much more the sexy, perormance yachts the Italian yards specialise in. But as French yards like Pogo and JPK have proven, there’s growing enthusiasm for lightweight planing yachts – and the First 36 is the first real production yacht in that spirit.
Here’s a yacht that puts the focus firmly back into sailing. The First 36 has been kept inviting and approachable – unlike many yachts that can plane, the look is modest, not aggressive. It’s uncomplicated, unfussy and the result is a pleasure for all to sail. It’s more about what you can’t see, the design and engineering, which should ensure longterm demand.
The small, fiddly heads compartment and lack of tiller options are perhaps the only real detraction from an otherwise brilliant collaboration by Seascape and Beneteau, from concept to build quality.
It was their goal to keep this area of the market relevant and prove a mainstream brand can do it, rather than only niche specialist yards. To create a mass produced yacht at this weight and to this foam-cored quality and one that can bring so much fun is a feather in the cap of the First brand.
Grand Soleil 40
The Grand Soleil 40 is an archetypal Med cruiser-racer, and an absolute delight to sail – a feature I’ve learned that Matteo Polli designs tend to share (he also drew the Ecoracer). We sailed the race set up with ORC keel (an IRC version is available too) and six winches, an extended bowsprit and a taller mast. It was one of my most memorable trials of the season in 10-12 knots, with the deep and forward positioned rudder giving plenty of control and lovely direct steering.
The three cabin interior can have one or two heads and different galley options, the cabins are a good size with modest stowage, and it’s all tastefully styled by masters Nauta.
Italia yachts 12.98
At 5ft longer and from the board of Cossutti (who Polli once worked under), the Italia Yachts 12.98 is another cruiser-racer in the same grain as the GS40, but with a markedly different looking white interior. We sailed the ‘Bellissima’ cruising version, which 80% of customers have opted for.
Italia’s yard is now in Fano and its one-shot infused vinylester build looks impressive. However, the deck lacks some refinement and practical stowage, while the three cabin interior isn’t voluminous by today’s standards.
This is a slippery yacht that has a lovely, light feel on the single rudder – the interior styling will be the deal breaker for most.
Solaris Yachts on the other hand has perfected its recipe, tripling its yard size to cater to demand for its sexy Acebal-designed performance yachts.
The Solaris 50 we tested in 2015 and which won this award was arguably the turning point that propelled the brand’s popularity. The owner of the new 50 we tested previously had the original 50 and a 58 and confirms this replacement has nearly the same space as the 58, yet is faster, more powerful and stable than its predecessor (we easily matched 7-8 knot winds under gennaker).
It heels onto its chine and accelerates well, while twin rudders provide ample control. The design prioritises helming experience but the yard needs to come up with a better helm seat option. The interior is well executed, especially the spacious forward owner’s cabin.
The Elan E6 is a big 47-footer, high and beamy and one that leans more towards spirited cruising with generous accommodation over racing. That said, extensive options allow you to tailor it either way, including foam cored furniture and a taller carbon mast for those looking for extra oomph.
It’s a fine collaboration between Humphreys Yacht Design, Gurit, Pininfarina and Elan, while an impressive standard spec includes a carbon sprit and six winches.
The E6 is fun to sail at various angles and gives a nice, sporty feel on the helm – it likes to heel but has plenty of grip and tracks well.
The cockpit is deep and comfortable, with good optional protection and there’s ample deck stowage. A really smart three (or four) cabin interior shows a high standard of construction, finish and styling. It is bulky and you pay for the size in weight, but it looks good and Elan knows how to build a great boat for the price.
Best performance yachts 2022
Winner best performance yachts 2022 – jpk 39fc.
Along with fellow Brittany yard Pogo, JPK has redefined the modern performance cruiser: stiff, stable and efficient to the max. For the keen sailor who wants to get the utmost enjoyment out of hands-on cruising, the JPK 39 is a superb design (and to my eye, an appealing one too), while the yard has done a nice job with the vacuum-infused construction and interior fit-out. The two-cabin version we sailed had plenty of stowage too.
It looks different, behaves beautifully and stands up to its canvas, is designed to sail efficiently with a loaded displacement, and has a deck set-up to encourage you to trim it to your heart’s content. My only slight negative is the unnerving mess the cockpit can become as there are so many control lines.
This lightweight blast will best suit experienced sailors and those comfortable with short-handed sailing. And it guarantees smiles.

One such sports catamaran is the IC36, an exciting first offering from a new Czech brand that’s packed with fresh thinking. The first turbo version of this cruising catamaran (Independence) is built using a carbon fibre crossbeam, bowsprit, boards and rudders, epoxy hulls, plus a custom Pauger rotating mast, which all serve to keep weight below three tonnes.
It provided some spirited sailing, particularly when fetching at a measured pace of 10-13.5 knots with the code 0. The direct feel of tiller steering while seated in the low rotating bucket seats was a highlight.
The finish quality in the hulls is first class and there is somehow space for up to eight berths. The coachroof features a retractable bimini and removable vinyl side panels and solar panels, while the cockpit table, which includes an exterior galley, is also removable.
In fact the IC36 can be dismantled to 2.55m beam to make it legally trailable. It has so many options and ideas – too many perhaps – all reflected in the price.
Monohull enthusiasts will share our congratulations to J-Boats for its elegant new flagship. The J/45 won the hearts of the jury and made for a long drawn out decision against the JPK. In the end the two yachts will appeal to different sailors and tastes.
J has stayed true to its roots, yet still managed to bring a current, classy new offering. The unmistakable Alan Johnstone lines have been paired with a contemporary, warm European interior designed by Isabelle Racopeau, while much focus has been paid to the joinerwork and the invisible quality. We saw the two cabin version, which has an excellent technical cabin in place of the second aft cabin.
The J/45 is designed to still perform when loaded with cruising gear. True to J’s reputation, it was a witch upwind and could outpoint anything else during our trials. The compromise is that it won’t plane easily like a JPK or Pogo.
The Solaris 40 is another looker from Soto Acebal and the blue steel metallic hull colour of the test boat made the powerful hull shape really stand out.
We liked the recessed traveller, direct steering to the twin rudders, neat folding helm seats, clutches integrated into the coamings and the easy access to the side decks. However, the jury found the cockpit with its short benches and deck design a little too flat and minimalist.
The interior is smart and contemporary, again offered with two or three cabins with two heads it makes good use of the space.
One of the yachts I was looking forward to sailing most was the Pogo 44, and the only one shortlisted that I didn’t manage to! A collision with the photographer’s RIB shortly before my scheduled trial put it out of action.
However, my colleague Rupert Holmes did a full Pogo 44 test and report on it for Yachting World and describes the 44 as designed to thrill and unlike any other pure cruising yacht of its size. The stability from the beamy hull and deep lifting keel combines brilliantly with the ability to sail fast easily and in comfort. However some jury members didn’t like having to rely on an autopilot to use winches.
The interior is like a loft apartment, with so much natural light – it’s minimalist yet comfortable, spacious and practical for cruising.

The World of Motor Yachts: Luxury, Performance, and Freedom
Motor yachts offer a unique combination of power, comfort, and freedom on the water. Designed primarily for pleasure cruising or racing, these impressive vessels put the world at your fingertips.
A Spectrum of Sizes: Finding Your Perfect Motor Yacht
Motor yachts come in different sizes, catering to every desire. From compact and maneuverable models around 33 feet (10 meters) to sprawling luxury palaces exceeding 131 feet (40 meters), there’s a perfect fit for every dream.
Pricing Considerations:
- Smaller motor yachts (33ft – 50ft) typically range from $500,000 to $3 million.
- Mid-size yachts (50ft – 80ft) can fall between $3 million and $15 million.
- Superyachts (over 80ft) enter a whole new pricing category, reaching into the hundreds of millions and beyond, depending on size, customization, and features.
Power and Maneuverability: Taking Control on the Water
Motor yachts usually have two or more motors. This has several advantages:
- Better Maneuverability: Two engines allow captains to better deal with challenging weather conditions. Thanks to vessel control software systems, it also provides some advantages when docking.
- Fuel Efficiency and Range: With dual engines and customized fuel tanks, extended cruises at constant speeds with lower fuel consumption are possible. This is where the explorer yacht, designed to roam, even cross the Atlantic, thrives.
- Shallow Water Access: Unlike deep-keel sailboats, motor yachts have a shallower draft, allowing them to explore beautiful coves and hidden bays inaccessible to other vessels.
The Flybridge Advantage: Elevated Yachting Experience
Many motor yachts, particularly larger models, will also have a flybridge. This offers captains better visibility for navigation, docking, and it provides passengers with higher vistas. Flybridge boats, like the smaller Merry Fisher , have that additional social space, featuring seating areas, wet bars, and sundecks.
Beyond Ownership: Exploring the Charter Option
Chartering offers a fantastic alternative for those seeking a taste of the motor yacht lifestyle without the full commitment of ownership. Chartering allows owners to offset some of the cost of their boats.
In 2020, an estimated 15,000 yachts were exceeding 79 feet available for charter worldwide.
Charter yachts often involve annual maintenance costs of around 15% of the yacht’s value. For vessels valued over $3 million, that’s almost a half million a year!
Our boating editors recently checked out the Miami boat show to understand this decadent market. We found many owners who don’t even get to use their yachts as much as they’d like, so the chartering world makes sense for everyone.
Entering the Realm of Superyachts: Luxury Redefined
The “Commercial Yacht Code” categorizes motor yachts exceeding 79 feet (24 meters) as superyachts and those surpassing 131 feet (40 meters) as mega-yachts. These behemoths represent the pinnacle of luxury yachting, with meticulously crafted interiors, advanced technological marvels, and crew quarters to cater to the owner’s every need. Naturally, these vessels come with exceptionally high construction standards and price tags.
Buying a Motor Yacht
Once you have made a decision to purchase a motor yacht, the next step is to determine exactly what make of motor yacht will best fit your requirements. There are so many different motor yachts, give yourself time to find the right one and ask yourself this.
- Budget capacity?
- New or used?
- What type of user experience do you want out of the vessel?
- What hull size of motor yacht is best?
Once you have created a shortlist, you can then refine your search. Take time out to go and view in person. Book yourself an experience aboard and head over to your closest marina and speak to owners. Consider these points before purchasing a motor yacht.
- Pre-book buyer’s sea trials for your shortlist
- Select the perfect motor yacht
- Used – get a certified hull survey, safety comes first
- Get annual insurance quotes
- Calculate dockage – purchase or rent a slip or dock
- Calculate monthly upkeep and maintenance
- Calculate extra costs like navigational devices & fittings
- Draft your own checklist
- Draft & sign off sale & purchase contracts
- Draft & sign off a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
- Ensure satisfied 100%
- Execute payment and take transfer of ownership
- Register and insure the motor yacht
Frequently Asked Questions About Motor Yachts
These 5 questions give you some clarity on what to consider when purchasing a motor yacht.
- How many guests and crew (combined) are you comfortable with aboard? Privately registered motor yachts can carry no more than 12 passengers, so often this will define the length of the vessel.
- Then consider functionality and lifestyle. Decide upfront what you want out of the motor yacht, are you planning to use it for charter, private cruising, sport, remote office, family vacations or entertainment or all of the above?
- Do you plan to use it on inland water systems or oceans or both?
- Do you want to captain and skipper yourself or would you prefer a crew, so you have time to enjoy the experience? Set a limit to your budget both in terms of purchase and then beyond that one has to consider the long term upkeep, storage, and monthly maintenance costs
- What is the best length for a Motor Yacht?
If you plan on becoming your own captain, the best hull size on average for a single-handed skipper would be between 32ft to 42ft.
The best motor yacht length is defined by both the objective and purpose of the vessel. Added to this one should consider both the budget and upkeep costs, including dockage fees, as these are most often calculated at a per foot rate. The next factor would be to select a good for the number of passengers you wish to have aboard (family, guests, crew), as the number of sleeping berths are limited on smaller hull sizes. As you increase your hull size, you need to consider that this will then add an extra headcount because you have to factor in additional space for crew.
They say the old golden unwritten nautical rule is that boat length is always defined by a person’s age. Whatever your age, double it, and that gives you a perfect hull length in feet (for example, if you are 40 years of age you should consider an 80ft hull length).
They can cost anywhere between $100,000- $10,000,000. The sky’s the absolute limit when it comes to what you can spend on a motor yacht. Used or new, the cost is often defined by the design, size and year of manufacture. Quality motor yachts are built to last and most often retain market related value if they are properly maintained and have an accident free history.
Motor yachts are generally between 33ft – 79 feet, super yachts are generally over 79 feet in hull length, and mega yachts are over 100 feet.
If you purchase a globally recognized brand, it makes selling the boat in the future much easier. The established global motor yacht brands offer a range of existing designs that can be customized to suit any individual requirement. These approved motor yacht designs are often updated with the latest technology and modifications over the years. A tip is that reputable international brands retain market value over the years so are considered a valuable investment.
There is never one best hull type for a motor yacht, there is rather a series or collection of yachts or vessels that are released and they often use the exact same hull design for different lengths in a series. There is a huge selection and variation of hull designs, and this is exactly what defines a yacht. Motor boat hulls are specifically designed to cut through water with the least possible resistance while remaining balanced in all types of weather and water conditions. Each year hull designs improve and often a new hull release is about using the latest carbon fiber molding techniques for structural strength, rather than a modification to the actual shape of the design.
Super yachts are power driven water vessels specially designed by yacht engineers and shipbuilders and are normally 71 – 99 feet in length. Super yachts that exceed 100ft in length are classified as mega yachts.

Top 5 Sportfish Yacht Brands [Buyer’s Guide]
The best sportfish yachts for sale..
Travel further and faster with a sportfish yacht . These unmistakable boats are built with purpose. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy the amenities and speed packed into a single machine, while families enjoy the comforts of a much larger yacht.
Sportfish boats can range in price from as low as $90,000 to upwards of a few million — it depends on the year, size, model, and amenities. If you’re in the market for a new or used sportfish yacht , simply choosing a brand can be overwhelming. We narrowed down the top 5 sportfish brands and examples of yachts for sale with Denison.
1. Bertram Yachts
Bertram sportfish yachts are legends in the marine industry. Their business history began over 60 years ago when the 31 Bertram won the Miami to Nassau Offshore Race. That boat and her performance set the stage for Bertram’s continued success and reputation. Today, Bertram boats are the result of state-of-the-art construction techniques, incorporating vacuum resin-infused composite construction.
Bertram delivers unmatched performance and luxury while still delivering a tournament-winning fishability. For example, the new Bertram 61 , which revolutionized the deep-V hull. This hardcore fishing machine is constructed using cutting-edge composite materials; it incorporates the raised deck and stepped shear of the past with present day elements for a unique look that is all Bertram. And the ride is better than ever.
2. Viking Yachts
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the word ‘Viking’? Scandinavian seafaring warriors… and the New Jersey-based boat brand. Viking Yachts was founded by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964. The business soon become a leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production with over 4,000 Viking sportfish and motor yachts delivered. Viking’s highly regarded seafaring reputation is rooted in its commitment to producing 90 percent of the boat in-house.
Viking sportfish yachts are characterized by their massive presence and deep-V hull. Like NINA MARIE , an 82’ Viking 2010. Her 5 stateroom, 6 head layout has the interior volume of a much larger motor yacht, yet the seakeeping ability of a Viking sportfish. This used Viking yacht for sale is powered by twin MTU M93 16V2000 2400HP with just 1800 hours.
3. Hatteras Yachts
When your slogan is “experience life without limits” then you’ve caught our attention. Hatteras sportfish yachts are designed and built to offer an unmatched boating experience. The business began in 1959 in North Carolina, when founder and marlin fisherman Willis Slane envisioned a fishing vessel that could withstand the unforgiving waters off Cape Hatteras.
In 1960, the company introduced the Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat available in the 40-foot range. What followed were continuous innovations and a remarkable legacy of superior craftsmanship, engineering, and attention to detail that remain the brand’s hallmarks sixty years later.
Hatteras sportfish yachts – such as JUST LIKE THAT , a 70’ Hatteras 1999 – offer plenty of outriggers, rod holders, storage, and spacious lounge areas. This used Hatteras for sale features an aft cockpit that’s a fisherman’s dream with a molded-in transom fish box, updated refrigerator/freezer plates, fresh/salt water wash downs, rod holders, and built in step boxes. The Hatteras modified-V hull delivers a sharp entry and a stable ride. No pounding here.
4. Merritt Yachts
Merritt’s Boat and Engine Works is a family-owned and operated business that started in 1948. The yard is located in Pompano Beach, Florida, and has gained a reputation for high-quality work and friendly customer service. The first boats built by Merritt were strictly for catching tuna. But they lacked creature comforts. With enhancements over the years, the small mom-and-pop business became known for building all-around outstanding boats.
EL CHUPACABRA is an 80-foot Merritt built in 2006 that boasts a high-quality composite construction and exceptional craftsmanship. Her unmistakable profile is bound to attract attention on the water as she’s powered by MTU M91 16V2000 engines. Run, don’t walk to this opportunity to own a classic Merritt sportfish .
5. Cheoy Lee
Cheoy Lee is backed by five generations of shipbuilding expertise. The company began in Hong Kong in 1936 building merchant sailing vessels during World War II. By the 1950s, the Cheoy Lee began building motor yachts while embracing the latest technological advances. Today, the company builds semi-custom yachts for owners who value performance, innovation, quality, and service.
FOUR ACRES , a 70’ Cheoy Lee 1988, remains one of the more aggressively styled big sportfishing yachts in the late-model marketplace. The ride is soft and dry as she’s built on a double-V bottom and Carolina flare bow. The accommodations of the boat rival those of a good-sized motor yacht thanks to an impressive 20-foot beam. This used sportfish for sale is available with Denison.
Whether you’re a first-time buyer or veteran boat owner, a sportfish is an exciting purchase. You’ll gain access to a different world of boating and fishing thanks to advanced technology, amenities, and performance. Contact a Denison yacht broker to find your next sportfish yacht.

The World’s Best Yacht Brands
19th jul 2024 by samantha wilson.
Even to those in the industry, the definition of the term “ yacht ” often falls in a gray area. What one defines as a yacht, another may refer to as a boat. This ambiguity is an accepted oddity within the yachting world and while there are some broad definitions, there are no firm rules.
Where the industry generally unites is in defining that recreational vessels over 80 feet are classed as superyachts, although even there, some will hold out for 100 feet. Boats below 80 feet become more difficult to define. A luxury sportfishing boat is unanimously considered to be a yacht, as are modern luxury trawlers. But in many quarters, most boats over 30 feet are classified as a yacht if they have a quality, “yacht-like” finish. This can include small motoryachts, cabin cruisers, well-appointed center consoles, and express or open sportfishing models . Sailboats are also widely referred to as yachts when even shorter than 30 feet, perhaps because cruising sailors are frequently known as “yachties.” Virtually all larger sailboats with cabins and galleys are called yachts.
Which brings us to the other definition of a yacht, and that is the level of luxury it possesses. A simple, mid-sized fishing boat that’s a little rough around the edges is unlikely to ever be graced with the name “yacht”; the finishings, the furnishings, the electronics, the decks, the cabins, galleys, and general outlook of the boat play a significant role in it being given the title of yacht.
Let’s take a look at the many different types of yachts on the market today and look at some of the best yacht brands building them. It’s important to remember that there are a huge number of luxury boat brands all across the world, and this is just a small selection.
Best Motor Yachts
The term motor yacht can describe any luxury recreational vessel from 30 feet up to the largest superyachts, but is typically used for mid-sized cruisers from 30 to 80 feet in length. They’ll have cabins, galleys, saloons, and heads; they’ll have a high-end finish, plenty of space for sun lounging, and be geared towards families and weekend cruising.
Best Motor Yacht Brands
Sunseeker: With its origins in the 1960s, this British brand of motor yachts has an extensiveline-up (and even more models on the used market). Models range from mid-sized to superyacht scale, and they have both a luxury finish and a sleek, distinctive appearance. Sunseeker boats for sale
Riva Yachts: The Riva Yachts brand has a long history and for decades has been synonymous with fine Italian craftmanship. Today it is owned by Ferretti Group and offers a range of sleek, elegant motor yachts that honor its classic heritage. With a current range including Sportfly, Flybridge, and Open models, it remains one of the most prestigious brands in the industry. Riva boats for sale
Princess Yachts: Another British brand, Princess Yachts builds fine motor yachts from midsize to superyacht size. The company was founded in the 1960s and operates out of a huge, 1.1 million square feet shipyard. Its luxury motor yachts are some of the most technologically advanced for their size in the industry. Princess boats for sale

Best Sailing Yachts
In an era where motor yachts dominate the waters, it’s easy to forget momentarily that sailboats were the very first yachts. Over around 30 feet they fall into the yacht category, with cabins, galleys, and heads making them suitable for longer-range cruising. The rigging and sails tends to make little difference to sailing yacht classification, but rather the vessel’s ability to cruise farther and longer and in more comfort and luxury. Best Sailing Yacht Brands
Hallberg-Rassy : The long-standing Swedish brand Hallberg-Rassy has an impressive line-up of quality ocean-going sailing yachts that offer sturdy blue-water capabilities and comfortable, elegant interiors. The brand has a range of models from 34 to 69 feet that are excellent long-distance cruisers. Hallberg-Rassy boats for sale
X-Yachts: Offering top performance in both their competitive and cruising models since 1979, the Danish X-Yachts brand has long been admired on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean for quality boats and excellent sailing capabilities. While best known for their racing models, the X-Yachts team now offers bluewater performers up to 56 feet overall in length. X-Yachts boats for sale
Jeanneau : Jeanneau has been building capable, innovative ocean-going sailing yachts for over 60 years and has gained a great reputation for innovative design and good sailing performance. The brand’s current range includes large yachts, small ocean racers, and 35- to 49-foot cruising models that are cleverly designed, perform well, offer excellent handling, and are relatively affordable. Jeanneau boats for sale
Beneteau: While Groupe Beneteau owns and builds an array of both motor yachts and sailing yachts (including Jeanneau, above), its flagship Beneteau brand is known for building and selling more sailboats every year than any other brand. The company offers spacious, modern cruising and luxury models 30 to 60 feet in length, and well-respected performance models 14 to 53 feet. Beneteau boats for sale

Best Luxury Yachts
The term luxury yacht can define any vessel that offers an exceptionally high-quality finish, luxury furnishings, and is generally a cut above the rest. The term luxury can apply to all styles of boats that we look at in greater detail on this list, including cruisers, modern recreational trawlers, sportfishing yachts, superyachts, motoryachts, and sailing yachts.
Best Luxury Yacht Brands
Azimut: The Italian Azimut|Benetti Group brought together two of the top brands in Europe in 1985 and has grown to be one of the most respected luxury brands in Europe and the US. While Benetti builds superyachts exclusively now, Azimut builds seven lines of models ranging 42 to 125 feet and outboard-powered to hybrids, flybridge speedsters to trawlers and larger motoryachts. Azimut boats for sale
Sunreef: Builder of power and sailing catamarans in Gdansk, Poland, Sunreef Yachts started as a yacht charter agency and then began building luxury, ocean-going, flybridge-equipped catamarans in 2003. Today, with a new, dramatically larger factor and heavy investment in energy-independent technologies, Sunreef power and sail models range from 44 to 100 feet, and a superyacht range is well underway. Sunreef boats for sale
Sanlorenzo: The Sanlorenzo shipyard has been building high-quality motor yachts since 1958 and offers a range of sophisticated, custom luxury yachts. Its Yacht Series ranges from 78 to 120 feet in length, while the Superyacht Series offers yachts up to 220 feet. Sanlorenzo boats for sale

Best Superyachts
Superyachts are generally categorized as yachts (both motor and sail) over 80 feet, and they are typically the largest and most luxurious vessels in the world costing millions of dollars. The heart of the superyacht manufacturing industry is in Europe, with many of the world’s top brands based in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany, but with builders in the United States, United Kingdom, and Asia also making big waves. Superyachts set the bar for the boating industry, pushing the boundaries of innovation and engineering.
Best Superyacht Brands
Lürssen: German brand Lürssen have their finger on the pulse of innovation, and their huge luxury yachts pave the way for the industry as a whole. Lürssen has built some of the largest and most expensive luxury yachts in the world including 511 feet-long Dilbar .
Feadship: Dutch brand Feadship is a major player in the superyacht world, and has built some of the largest luxury vessels including Anna at 360 feet. It was founded over 70 years ago as an alliance of several shipyards and continues to challenge itself to create ever-more daring and innovative vessels. Feadship boats for sale
Oceanco: Another Dutch builder, Oceanco, focuses on superyachts in the 80 meter range, with their largest being Infinity at 374 feet featuring seven decks and luxuries including a spa, sauna, gym, and yoga studio.

Best Small Yachts
Pocket yachts offer the best of both worlds, with clever use of interior and deck space providing versatility, overnight stays, and comfort for family and friends aboard. And all in a compact and often more affordable package. Larger doesn’t always mean better, and these brands are proving just that with their small yachts.
Best Small Yacht Brands
Hinckley Yachts: Dating back almost a century as a sail and power yacht builder, Maine-based Hinckley Yachts now produces elegant pocket cruiser yachts. Its Picnic Boat range of models 37, 39 and 40 feet in length combine classically beautiful lines, cutting edge technology, and a finish of rich woods and plush seating. The jet-powered boats provide a quiet, smooth, and fast ride, as well as exceptional comfort both inside and on deck. Hinckley boats for sale
Chris-Craft: For those wanting to buy a boat with true yacht looks and power, you can’t go wrong with the all-American brand Chris-Craft. While its range of models are smaller in size than many others on this list, its 34-foot Catalina and 35-foot Calypso certainly fit in the yacht category with small interior cabins and heads. Best Affordable Yachts
Yachts are a luxury asset, and whenever we talk about affordability it ultimately comes down to a buyer’s personal budget. Of course, buying a used boat is always going to be more cost effective than a brand new one, but there are also yacht brands that focus on quality and value-for-money affordable yachts including:
Best Affordable Yacht Brands
Ranger Tugs: Ranger Tugs is one of the most affordable yacht brands, with a great choice of family-friendly pocket yachts and long-distance cruisers. The R-23, in particular, has been built with price at the forefront and allows buyers to purchase an excellent trawler boat at well under the price of most competitors. Ranger Tugs boats for sale
Cutwater Boats: While Cutwater describes its vessels as boats, we feel the size range and finish of their cruising trawlers qualifies them for yacht status. They are functional, reliable, and affordable, with a quality finish and plenty of home comforts making them good value-for-money. Cutwater boats for sale
There are brands which offer excellent value-for-money yachts, with high quality workmanship and finishes at lower cost than the competition. Cutwater photo.
Best Sportfish Yachts
The sportfishing yacht market is booming in the United States, with the popularity of these mean fishing machines growing year on year. Sportfishing yachts are characterized by their speed and reliability, as well as offering plenty of fishing amenities, comfort, and a great driving experience. There are many brands out there to choose from, with some of the major players including:
Best Sportfish Yacht Brands
Scout Boats: Scout’s center console sportfishing yachts are some of the most luxurious in the industry. With models ranging from 17 to 67 feet, they offer accommodation, large horsepower, as many as four outboard engines, spacious flybridges, and all manner of fishing accessories. These sportfishing yachts combine cruising comfort with serious offshore angling to create a multi-functional cruising yacht. Scout boats for sale
Boston Whaler: No list would be complete without Boston Whaler on it, so popular is this all-American brand and its stellar reputation. In its current line-up the Conquest, Realm, and Outrage ranges offer models which easily fall into the over 30-foot luxury yacht category, with multiple, hefty horsepower engines, all the offshore fishing equipment you can imagine, and a beautiful finish. Boston Whaler boats for sale
Viking: Head-turning, luxurious, and seriously powerful, Viking Yachts’ range of sportfishing yachts is one of the best in the industry. The family-run brand has a huge line-up, with nearly 20 models ranging from 38 feet to a whopping 90 feet including convertibles and enclosed flybridge yachts, each one finished to an incredibly high spec. Best Trawler Yachts
The slow, sturdy trawler has had one of the most impressive makeovers of any vessel. Once considered a fishing boat workhorse, today they are one of the most sought-after long-distance cruising yachts on the market. These impressive ocean-going yachts offer luxury, comfort, space, speed and fuel-efficiency in one highly capable and attractive package. Today’s trawler yachts are differentiated by their iconic silhouette resembling a mini superyacht.
Best Trawler Yacht Brands
Nordic Tugs: These American-built trawler yachts are the epitome of what today’s trawlers can be: luxurious, long-range and spacious. They’re anything but a tug boat, and built with meticulous attention to detail creating reliable, adventure-bound cruisers. Nordic Tugs boats for sale
Outer Reef Yachts: Designed to suit their owners, these semi-custom long-range cruisers have been built in Taiwan for Outer Reef in the US for more than 20 years. Interiors display extraordinary craftsmanship, whether the yachts are 58 feet or more than 100 feet long. Outer Reef boats for sale
Grand Banks: One of the pioneers of the cruising trawler, Grand Banks have brought these hugely popular yachts to superyacht levels in a compact package. They have six decades of boat building under their belt, offering reliability, customer service and forward-thinking ideas. Grand Banks boats for sale
Nordhavn: Nordhavn produces well-engineered, high-performance trawler yachts ranging from 41-foot pocket cruisers to 120-foot superyachts. Yet each one always retains its trawler image, which has been Nordhavn’s signature look for several decades. Nordhavn boats for sale

Best Sport Yachts
The sport yacht (or sports cruiser as it is also commonly referred to) brings speed, adventure, versatility, and comfort to the table in huge measures. They range from around 30 feet all the way up to 80 feet and, while there’s no hard and fast criteria to define them, are usually sporty-looking powerboats with an open cockpit, a forward cabin forward, and no flybridge.
Best Sport Yacht Brands
Axopar: Finnish brand Axopar simply exudes adventure with its range of hardy yet elegant sports boats. With distinctive angular styling and a forward-thinking multifunctional and modular concept, its boats allow owners to travel farther and do more. Its largest 37-foot and 45-foot models offer everything from watersports to overnight trips, navigating inclement weather, transporting on-land adventure sports equipment and more. Axopar boats for sale
Sea Ray Boats: Sea Ray has been building some of the best sport cruiser yachts in the US since its founding in 1959. Today it remains one of the most popular, with a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction, as well as attention to detail. While most of its current models are smaller (and more affordable) than others on this list, its hugely popular Sundancer series offers models up to 37 feet with outboard and stern-drive configurations and a strong emphasis on interior and deck space. Sea Ray boats for sale
Tiara Yachts: Tiara Yachts was founded in 1974 and is highly regarded as one of the premier sport yacht builders in the industry. Its models range from 34 to over 60 feet, with a choice of inboards and outboards. Features such as huge side swim platforms, rotating cockpit seating and dinettes, impressive fishing accessories, and accommodations for up to four people, they are as sporty as they are luxurious. 15 Best Sailboat Brands
Table of Contents
Last Updated on September 24, 2024 by Boatsetter Team
When choosing a sailboat, the brand can make a big difference in quality, performance, and resale value. But picking the “best sailboat brand” means swimming through a lot of different kinds of boats with different intended purposes. Are you looking for a large luxury offshore cruising boat or small production daysailer? Do you want a monohull or a catamaran? Are you looking to buoy racer or weekend cruiser?
Although we can’t address all brands and all their uses, we can segment out monohulls from catamarans and address production boats versus luxury brands. Here are some you’ll see on the water and find in peer-to-peer sharing services like Boatsetter.
1. Beneteau
2. Jeanneau
Also under the Beneteau Group umbrella, Jeanneau is renowned for its stylish, performance-oriented sailboats. They offer a broad range of boats that appeal to both casual sailors and competitive racers with models ranging 30-65 feet. Both Beneteau and Jeanneu now build sailboats as well as powerboats.
Another French builder is Dufour that produces versatile, stylish sailboats with a good balance between performance and comfort. This brand is popular among cruising families and casual sailing racers. Dufour was founded in 1964, so they too have a long history on the water and offer reliable models 37-61 feet.
4. Catalina
An American builder, Catalina Yachts offers models 12-44 feet. These coastal cruisers used to be built on the West Coast so you can spot a lot of older versions on the Pacific Ocean. Catalina is focused on easy-maintain and easy-to-handle boats that are family weekending favorites. Dealerships are harder to find these days but today, Catalina will build you a boat in Florida if you inquire.
Oyster is a British luxury builder of serious offshore bluewater cruising yachts and has an excellent reputation with those who want to globetrot in style and make long safe passages. The brand is synonymous with quality and attention to detail. They specialize in building larger passagemakers 49-88 feet and are an exceptional choice for distance cruising if you have a serious budget.
A volume production builder from Germany, Bavaria is known for durable cruisers that are good both with charter fleets and in private ownership. Today, Bavaria offers heavy-duty sailing monohulls 37-57 feet although they also build powerboats.
Another German production builder is Hanse known for sleek modern designs with innovative systems and performance hulls. Hanse has easy-to-handle rigs with self-tacking jibs which makes short-handed sailing a breeze. Hanse has a sister company named Moody which builds comfortable cruising models based on many of the same Hanse hulls.
8. Hallberg-Rassy
A legacy brand, Hallber-Rassy is known for their quality and traditional designs capable of offshore work. This durable Swedish brand has a robust construction and commands a higher price. They’re better known in Europe than in the US and they don’t build in the same kind of volume as many of the production brands so they’re harder to spot.
9. Nautor Swan
A name that has been synonymous with high performance and luxury is Finland’s Nautor Swan. They’re a pedigreed brand with elegant design and renown craftsmanship. Swan was purchased by Italian luxury builder San Lorenzo in the summer of 2024. Their models range 48-65 feet and they have a maxi division that builds superyachts 80-128 feet.
Multihulls:
A segment of cruising sailboats are multihulls, specifically catamarans. Here are popular production cat builders and three extra brands that will make you look twice.
Perhaps the best-known production catamaran brand is Lagoon which is part of the Beneteau umbrella and has been building models since 1987. These models do heavy work in charter around the world so if you see a cat on the water, it’s a good bet that it’s a Lagoon. Offered in lengths 40-78 feet, Lagoon is a volume builder that develops both sail and power multihulls.
Nautitech Open
Nautitech is a French company that was briefly owned by German Bavaria. Now they’re on their own again and espouse Marc Lombard design. They’re known for unique interior layouts that maximize outdoor social spaces. These stylish cats of 40-48 feet have sleek profiles with angular windows, a lowcoachroof and powerful hull sections. Able to sail 10 knots in 15-20 knots of true wind, these bluewater cats are happy to go around the harbor or around the world.
Fountaine Pajot
The French seem to own the world of sailing cats since another powerhouse production brand is Fountaine Pajot which is also a sister brand with monohull builder Dufour mentioned above. The new designs are built for large groups on charter or for families. Cabin arrangements are flexible from an owner’s version with a sumptuous suite all the way to a five-cabin layout that will accommodate 10 guests with ease.
Balance is a premium builder of bluewater performance multihulls designed to carry a good turn of speed on all points of sail which is assisted by foiled daggerboards that make easy work of upwind sailing. Self-tacking rigs and the versatile VersaHelm make driving these serious models a snap. Balance currently builds three models 44-52 feet with three larger models on the drawing board.
When a budget can stretch, sailors reach for upmarket build-to-order ubercats like HH Catamarans produced in China. These boats carry daggerboards and carbon rigs and are great for serious racing as well as distance cruising. These models have a carbon construction to be strong and lightweight and few multihulls will raise an eyebrow quite like an HH sailing by in a flash. Luxury designs are available in 44-88 feet.
NEEL Trimarans
When two hulls aren’t enough, consider a trimaran. Tris are typically faster than cats but have unique and sometimes challenging onboard layouts. When small and designed for racing, tris like the Dragonfly brand are fast and fun. In contrast, French company NEEL builds large cruising tris that reels off the miles and provide lots of space for cruising necessities. NEEL’s current portfolio includes models 43-52 feet with a flagship coming at 65 feet.
Each of these sailing brands has its strengths, whether you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser, a performance-oriented racer, or a luxury bluewater multihull. The best choice depends on your needs, sailing style, and budget.
If you already own one of these fabulous sailboat brands and want to offset the purchase price and ongoing costs, consider chartering via a peer-to-peer services like Boatsetter that can make ownership much more manageable.

The Most Popular Yacht Brands
By Robert Bowman | Posted On Feb 21, 2022 Updated On May 18, 2022
After walking around the Miami Boat Show this week, I had the opportunity to speak with several excited future owners, as well as representatives from many of the shipyards in the 40-foot to 100-foot range. While none of this will come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the trends in yacht sales, there were mixed emotions from everyone as inventory shortages continue and demand remains incredibly strong. As you can imagine, even the most popular yacht brands have not been spared from equipment troubles, material shortages, and shipping delays.
(Keep scrolling down to get to the most popular boat brands by number of sold boats.)
The love and passion for boating that has grown this amazing recreation continues to thrive, while the need for relaxation is more important than ever before. What better way to unwind than on your own personal yacht, enjoying the sun and ocean with your favorite guests! I listened to one couple's plans to take on the Great Loop and had brought with them a list of bridge heights, along with requirements they wanted in a boat for their adventure. They planned on spending over a year on the Loop, taking their time along the way to enjoy each stop. Another gentleman perused over a 58-foot motor yacht with future plans of putting it into a yacht charter program in the Bahamas during season and off the New England Coast in the Summer.
The boating dreams and aspirations were generally the same as previous boat shows, but the sales climate was noticeably different. In some new boat displays, 'SOLD' signs could be seen on every single model on display.
Manufacturers, yacht dealers, and boaters alike all complained about the lack of available inventory - both new and used - with many wait times for new builds 18 months out or more. Fueled by shortages in materials and microchips, along with the incredible uptick in boat sales in the U.S., the current climate is one of quick decisions and fast action. Buyers using a professional yacht broker are more likely to be successful in finding the perfect boat as they can not only watch the market for what becomes available, but they also have knowledge of boats not yet currently advertised.
And for sellers, if there ever were a perfect time to sell your yacht quickly and for potentially over-asking price, it's right now!
Consider these facts for a moment :
- Total U.S. pre-owned sales increased 10% from 2019 to 2021 while the total value increased 57%
- Sales in the 46' to 55' category grew 34%, while the 56' to 79' category grew 38%
- Yacht Sales for the 80'+ category grew 61%
- United Yacht Sales also saw growth of 29% in 2021 , after increasing sales by 31% in 2020 .
- The average boat value, across both power and sail, has increased 40% since pre-pandemic conditions.
A 10% increase in sales is a tremendous surge for an industry that sees nearly $40 billion in sales each year. According to a 2021 market index report from Boats Group, cruising yachts were the most popular type of yacht searched for on the brokerage market. Coming in second place were center-console boats , followed by motor yachts.
"It makes sense that cruisers are the most popular searched for boat," said Captain Jeff Palmer, UYS co-President. "Not only are there more cruising-style boat builders, but the versatility of this design keeps them relevant. People love to go on trips, whether it's to the islands or up the coastline, and the comfortable accommodations they provide are important to the owners." Our team can assist you in determining how much you should spend on a yacht .
( Seen below: A Pershing 62HT is a perfect example of an express cruiser . )
While not a representation of every single boat sold in the marketplace, the below list outlines what boat brands were the most purchased on the brokerage market in 2021 in the United States. If you're looking to sell your boat, whether it's on this list or not, give our main office a call at 1-772-463-3131 to be connected to an expert on the current market.
Here are the most popular boat brands in 2021 *
1. Sea Ray Boats
2. Boston Whaler
3. Grady-White
4. Regal Boats
5. Carver Yachts
*Criteria: U.S. sales only, pre-owned only. Data: Soldboats.com
(Seen below: An excellent example of a pre-owned Sea Ray yacht that is currently listed with United Yacht Sales.)
The brands listed above really come as no surprise as there were simply many more of these vessels built in the 90's and 2000's that continually become available for sale on the brokerage market each year. If we move the criteria to 50-feet and up, the top 5 brands change drastically.
Here are the most popular yacht brands over 50-feet:
2. Hatteras Yachts
3. Viking Yachts
4. Azimut Yachts
5. Prestige Yachts
I would also like to note that Carver Yachts and Ocean Alexander would have been included if we excluded the sportfishing brands. Although Hatteras and Viking both build motor yachts, the bulk of their sales continue to be in the fishing category.
Here are the top sportfishing yacht brands in 2021 : (production builders)
1. Viking Yachts
3. Tiara Yachts
5. Bertram Yachts
There are simply more cruising boat builders than sportfishing boats, making it important to break this category out by itself. Even drilling down further would require separating pre-owned custom sportfishing boats out from the production boats since so few of them are built each year.
(Seen below: This Merritt Yachts 58' is an exciting example of a custom sportfish listed with United Yacht Sales.)
The second most sought after category, center-console boats, always seems to be a dominant segment of the industry thanks to their relative affordability when compared to much larger yachts. The ease of handling and maintenance, normally due to having outboard engines, makes this a popular choice for many boat owners.
Here are the most popular center-console brands on the pre-owned market :
1. Boston Whaler
2. Grady-White
4. Edgewater
5. Intrepid
Please note that many boats in this category are sold 'For Sale By Owner' so exact numbers can be hard to quantify. This data represents pre-owned center-consoles sold through brokers and noted in soldboats.com. Both Contender Boats and were close behind Intrepid in terms of number of boats sold.
(Seen below: This Boston Whaler 38 Realm is a great example of a higher-end center-console on the brokerage market.)
No matter what type or brand of boat you own, whether it's considered popular or not, the United Yacht Sales will team will provide the right market analysis for you, a clear plan of action on how to sell it, will follow up with every inquiry promptly, keep you informed on its progress, and continue providing assistance through closing. The all-new hybrid propulsion superyacht brand unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show
It all started in 2018; an idea that would bring a totally new design concept to the superyacht industry. When His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco spotted Slovenian shipyard Greenline Yachts’ 9.9-metre all-electric model at the Monaco Yacht Show, he couldn’t wait to step on board. Fast forward to the Monaco Yacht Show 2024 and GX Superyachts makes its grand debut – a range of 24-56-metre aluminium superyachts offering a greener solution to ultra-high-net-worth individuals.
Born out of passion and market demand, the idea caters to the growing desire of current Greenline owners looking to scale up, while inviting new clients to experience the shipyard’s innovative approach. Backed by industry veteran Andrea Armas, who now advises the Board with over 28 years of experience in the industry, and manufactured at the renowned SES Yachts facility in Tuzla, Turkey, the first 42-metre GX42 model is already under construction.
A fresh design concept
The GX42 is offered in two configurations: the raised pilothouse (RPH) and the coupe. Renowned designer Marco Casali of Too Design is behind the yacht’s exterior, which features a striking, low-profile superstructure. The coupe version showcases a curved superstructure roofed with solar panels, which, at the push of a button, slide apart to reveal a hidden sundeck complete with a jacuzzi and bar. Alternatively, the RPH version offers a large flybridge for those seeking panoramic sea views.
Both configurations are equipped with a spacious beach club, enhanced by fold-down wings that create additional space. A notable design feature is the versatile aft passerelle, integrated into the stern and serving both as a gangway and a crane for tenders and toys.
Boasting 353 GT, the GX42 RPH offers a generous interior. She will comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests across five cabins, including a master suite on the main deck, while the lower deck houses a full-beam VIP cabin and three twins. Casali’s interior design ensures that moving through the yacht feels like a “natural, harmonious progression”, with an open and airy atmosphere throughout. Collaborations with high-end brands contribute to the luxurious styling, including Antonio Lupi porcelainware and Dornbrach faucets in the bathrooms, loose furniture by Poltrona Frau and Rugiano, Foglizzo leathers and natural wood flooring from Cadorin.
Silent cruising
At the heart of GX Superyachts is a commitment to the environment, with each yacht featuring a hybrid propulsion system that allows for smooth electric cruising at low speeds and powerful diesel performance when needed. The hybrid setup ensures the yachts can glide through the water in total silence while significantly reducing emissions.
In electric mode, the GX42 can achieve a range of 100 nautical miles at six knots. When switching to diesel power, she will showcase remarkable capabilities, including the ability to cross the Atlantic at 12 knots on a single tank of fuel. This impressive range is made possible by the smart hull design, penned by Francesco Rogantin of NAMES studio, which enhances both efficiency and speed, allowing the yacht to reach a top speed of 16 knots.
What sets the GX range apart is its significant reduction in carbon emissions, which is less than 60 per cent of a conventional yacht’s footprint. In line with Greenline Yachts’ sustainability ethos, the GX range will feature an extensive solar array and a large lithium battery bank. This system enables the yachts to remain at anchor for 48 hours or more, with full hotel systems, including air-conditioning, powered solely by the batteries.
While the yachting industry still has progress to make in sustainability, GX Superyachts embraces the concept of "responsible yachting" rather than the often overused "sustainable yachting". This approach emphasises that both the shipyard and owners are doing everything possible with the technology available to them to minimise environmental impact. This includes not only hybrid propulsion systems but also careful material selection, minimising single-use plastics, reducing waste and ensuring fair working conditions, to name a few. To further promote eco-conscious practices, the shipyard hosts the annual Greenline Yachts Awards, recognising owners who have generated the most solar power and logged the highest electric engine hours. This initiative encourages owners to participate in "responsible yachting" in a fun and rewarding way.
With 50 per cent of the hull already welded, the first GX42 has already been sold and is on track for a summer 2026 launch. A new order placed now could be ready to hit the water as early as the end of 2026. To find out more information, contact the GX Superyachts team today or follow the brand on Instagram for regular updates.

Marking something of a full circle moment, the Greenline team got the idea for the new brand at the MYS in 2018. The story goes that Prince Albert II of Monaco fell in love with the yard’s electric 33-footer and even requested an escort to the Monaco Yacht Club in the yacht. That high praise pushed the Greenline team to scale their green tech for the superyacht sector.
Each GX cruiser will feature a cutting-edge hybrid propulsion system, a highly efficient hull, and a large solar array. The hybrids will be able to seamlessly switch between diesel and electric power, allowing seafarers to cruise leisurely sans emissions or tear it up at speed. “At six knots in electric mode, these yachts can achieve an incredible range of up to 100 nautical miles,” Greenline CCO Luca Raumland said in a statement. “In diesel mode, they can cross the Atlantic at 12 knots, while the max range is 11,571 nautical miles at six knots”
The GX superyachts will produce 40 percent fewer carbon emissions than conventional diesel-powered vessels, according to Greenline. Each yacht will also be fitted with solar panels and a large lithium battery bank that together will offer enough green energy to power the hotel load silently and cleanly for 48 hours or more, the yard says.
GX has already reeled in a customer, too. The yard is in the process of constructing a 138-footer for an existing Greenline client. (As the GX models are too big for Greenline’s Slovenian yard, the fleet will be built in partnership with SES Yachts of Tuzla, Turkey.) The stylish new GX42 RPH will showcase leatherwork by Foglizzo, natural wood flooring by Cadorin, and furniture by Poltrona Frau and Rugiano. With 50 percent of the hull already complete, the yacht is expected to hit the seas in summer 2026.
