What Is a Downeast Boat and Is It Right for You?

Downeast boats have a long, rugged history in the boating world. Originally, they were designed to protect Northeastern fishermen from the unpredictable Atlantic waters. But after adapting to the recreational market, these luxury yachts have become a popular option for boating enthusiasts.  So, what is a Downeast boat? And better yet – is it a good cruising option for you? Stay tuned, as today’s blog post will reveal everything you need to know.

History of Downeast Boats

Downeast boats originated in Maine, which is how they got their name. Most travelers had to sail downwind to get to Maine’s coastline, thus inspiring the local phrase of sailing “down east.” Downeast boats were the hallmark of Maine’s lobster industry. As a result, they’re known for their durability, efficiency, and functionality.

What Are Downeast Style Boats?

Downeast boats are the perfect combination of stylish and seaworthy. Thanks to their fishing origins, they are impressively sturdy with high bows, raked stems, and enclosed helms. Additionally, Downeasters’ solid fiberglass hulls and wood interiors will keep occupants dry in choppy waters.   However, durability isn’t all these vessels have going for them. Their narrow entry allows for comfort and stability on the water. And their spacious layout is ideal for long-haul cruising.

Advantages of Downeast Boats

Is a Downeast boat suitable for you? If you aren’t quite sure, here are some advantages to choosing this style over your average sports cruiser:  1. Practicality Because they were designed with fishing in mind, these boats are incredibly easy to navigate. They are spacious, accessible, and super accommodating to boaters quickly maneuvering from the cockpit to the foredeck (in a strong breeze and choppy waters, might we add) to tie off a fender. Of course, there is also ample storage space and service access. 2. Fuel Efficiency Downeast boats maintain an excellent fuel economy. Most sports cruisers must refuel twice before a Downeast boat runs out of power.  3. Safety Because Downeast boats are designed for choppy Atlantic waters, they’re about as safe as you can get. These vessels have terrific visibility and ample handholds and grab rails.  4. Style Downeast-style boats are classics for a reason. They have a timeless design with sleek lines and premier materials that resells in a breeze. Their cockpit is complete with an unobstructed (and incredibly comfortable) socializing, dining, and relaxation area (making them ideal for entertaining and cruising).

Frequently Asked Questions

Still deciding if a Downeast boat is right for you? Below are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about these popular vessels:  What Are the Best Downeast Boat Brands? Saber Yachts is one of the most popular makers of Downeast-style boats, as it has sold 500+ vessels since the start of 2020. There are plenty of Downeast boats on the market, all sporting various price tags. The average Downeast boat will cost about $279,000. However, you can find them for as little as $20,051 in the used boat market and as much as $2,529,000 when you buy new (with all the bells and whistles included).  How Are Downeast Boats Typically Used?  There are plenty of uses for the modern Downeaster. Going back to its roots, this vessel is ideal for fishing excursions. It has an expansive cockpit that has plenty of room for anglers. And the deck boasts ample fish box capacity and ice.  Additionally, Downeasters are great for anyone looking to do some long-range cruising. Downeaster 32

Downeaster 32 is a 35 ′ 5 ″ / 10.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Bob Poole and built by Down East Yachts Inc. between 1975 and 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Introduced in 1975 the Downeaster 32 is a traditionally styled long range cruiser ideal for couples. Through the years the boat has proven to be rugged, easy to sail, and has won many a praise from owners. They have sailed far and wide and at least three have circumnavigated.

Even in the 1970s when Downeast Yachts introduced their boats they evoked nostalgia and tradition. The Downeaster 32 keeps up the family traits with a long keel with a keel-hung rudder, clipper bow and a bowsprit. The hull has moulded-in planking lines and a slight tumblehome in the aft quarters ending in a wineglass-shaped transom. Above deck, she’s driven by cutter rig slung from a four foot bowsprit – it’s a rig that has proven to be reliable.

Ex-factory, the Downeaster 32 exuded quality throughout and was offered with an large array of options above and belowdecks such that each boat tended to have a uniquely individual personality. The hull laminate was built extremely thick, bordering on overbuilt by modern standards and the rigging has proven strong.

Internal space is generous for a 32 foot boat and tall sailors will appreciate her six and a half feet of headroom. With the right configuration she can theoretically sleep six with three berths in the saloon, a quarter-berth on the starboard aft, and v-berths forward.

Because she is often sailed by couples or single handed, many owners have modified their boats appropriately. The original layout has two doors closing off the v-berth and adjacent head from the main saloon. There’s a u-shaped galley complete with gimballed stove, refrigerator and icebox, and a double sink. Storage includes two well-ventilated hanging lockers and numerous cubbies.

Access to the bilge and engine is unfortunately not ideal. Original boats were fitted with Farymann 24hp diesels, perhaps underpowered but known for their frugality, today many have upgraded to 27hp Yanmars.

Underway you’ll find the Downeaster 32 has reasonable performance on all points of sail. For novices she’s forgiving to sail while sailors who know her well can eck out the full performance from her sail plan. Her conservatively designed underbelly makes for relatively comfortable and very safe dynamics in offshore conditions.

Overall a very good seaworthy boat. Today it stands as a great choice for affordable and safe offshore cruising.

Down East Yachts located in Santa Ana, California was founded by Bob Poole in 1974 during what was considered the boom years for cruising sailboats. Poole was a boat builder who had previously worked for Columbia Yachts and had 14 years of experience under his belt before branching out to start his own company. A native of the East Coast, as the Down East name implies, his idea was to build a dependable line of sailboats with traditional styling in Southern California.

The Downeaster 32 designed by Poole himself was the second offering from the company. It was introduced only months behind the Downeaster 38 which was a design collaboration between Poole and Henry Mohrschladt , the name behind the famous Pacific Seacraft brand.

After the passing of Bob Poole, who died on April 29, 1978, the company continued to be active through to 1980, even finishing a number Westsails on behalf of the failing Westsail Corporation. Down East Yachts legally ceased as a company in 1983. The molds and tooling were sold to Newport Offshore Yachts.

In total, 134 boats were built with the last one completed in 1980. The Downeaster 32 was by far Down East Yachts’ most popular design.

Review of Downeaster 32

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Downeaster 32 is equipped with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.45 - 1.55 meter (4.76 - 5.06 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Downeaster 32 is 1.71, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Downeaster 32 is about 176 kg/cm, alternatively 989 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 176 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 989 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 19m 2 (204 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Boat: 1978 Venture 25
. What really impressed me was the room down below. I am a tall person 6' 4" and there was ample room for me to stand straight up in the .
I do not know anything about these . I'm am looking to buy a cruising in the near future and would love some input from those's who have knowledge of this boat. I didn't like the that much because it didn't have anywhere to rest your back against (another problem for tall sailors). It seem to sail well but we were in 10 -15 knots of and occassionally gust to 20 kts.
I would enjoy all advise and comments for a smaller boat (32'-38') that is ocean capitable and room inside for a tall man .
Aloha and Thank you

to and while I am far from an expert sailor - I always felt safe. Its a really sturdy boat. Try - good blog about the Downeast 38. Happy to give you more details if you are interested.

Boat: 1978 Venture 25
comfortable? I realize it is a very good cockpit for being at sea (small well) but could you get comfy while sailing. Does the lack of concern you? I love the fact that the boat is huge inside. (I have been aboard a 38'er too, but have not sailed one.)
Anything you might want to add to your like/dislike list of your boat is welcome.

I have narrowed down my search to a Downeast 32-38, Fuji 32-40, and an 32 -37(this one is probably out of my range).
So really i'm looking at just the DE and the Fuji.

Anything you could tell me would be outstanding.

Aloha and Mahalo,
John

Boat: Downeast 38 - Scappare
and we have sailed her in heavy . Obviously she is not a .... . The cockpit is small, yes - but thst didnt bother me.
Not sure what you mean by small - I thought its pretty big as well! (I had the running for a long time last time I went out - and found a leaking stuffing box had filled up the bilge completely... - I have had it looked at a few times and spend some repaitring it (due to the lack of time I have myself), but ....no success. So the inside is humid and wet all the time (This is Hong Kong) - which again makes the huge inside pretty useless.
But she's a great boat and we really enjoy taking her out.

Just joined and looking for some advice from the experts.   My partner and I are looking at a 32 and 38 this weekend on the West Coast. The use for our boat will be cruising around the bay and some southern destinations.  We are moderately experienced and cruise every year for 2 weeks in the Northwest.  We are leaning toward the 32 but we usually cruise on 38 to 42 footers.  Our boat would also be used as a liveaboard for up to a year at a time.  We are pretty good at mechanical, electrical and cosmetic repairs and are really impressed with looks, build quality and sailing characteristics.

Questions:

Best for a liveaboard

Ongoing maintenance requirements

Handling in the slips

Any other thing you want to add!

Thanks in advance,

Mark and Allan

Best for liveaboard: DE38 more space is more comfortable when living aboard

Ongoing maintenance requirements: DE32 going for a 32 to a 38 almost doubles the surface area and cubic volume of the hull. Everything takes more time and effort other than core systems such as engine, electrical, fridge, etc that are the same regardless of boat size. Ground tackle is much larger and more expensive.

Handling in the slips: DE32 with greater size comes greater weight which is harder to manhandle coming in and out of a slip. For two people a DE38 is doable but a 32 would be easier.

I have always had to have someone onboard to bring our DE38 in or out of the slip. With a little modification so that we had a midship cleat I think I could bring it in singlehandedly but if anything went wrong it wouldn't be pretty. I have handled 32 ft boats before though not a DE32 and most of them would have been ok single handing them in and out of the dock. With someone else on the boat they were downright easy. With the DE38 it is a massive increase in length and mass with the mass being the critical component. It doesn't accelerate or stop as quick and if you hit the dock hard with a larger boat it is HARD.

If I was by myself I would be happy with a DE32. Living with others I would want the DE38. At 6'2" inches the headroom in the DE38 is also a huge bonus for me. I don't have to duck anywhere in the boat.

Conversely the maintenance on the DE38 has been more expensive than I like and a massive amount more labor than my other smaller boats.

So make of it what you want it comes down to a couple things.. One are you doing your own maintenance .. If so how much time and energy do you have. Two how comfortable are you with a 20,000 lb full keel boat in close quarters. Out on the water I don't think there is much difference other than the size of the sails and ground tackle. They are boat the same layout with the same controls and rigging. If you are a larger person the DE38 hands down wins for living aboard but if your under 6ft tall then that might not make as much difference for two people.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, I really appreciate it.  We have chartered 42 footers with a 20,000 lb displacement but it had a fin keel and I certainly understand the issue with docking a full keel 38.  That will part of the sea trial if it goes that far and we will live with it for the room.  Interesting comment on the difference in upkeep but I am basically retired and have the time to putter.  I actually am looking forward to doing it!  I have read the notes on here as what problem areas to look for but do you have any suggestions on what are dealbreakers on an initial inspection on the Downeasters?  We will get a survey but it would be nice to find a no go on our inspection.

Thanks again,

Lots of soft spots in deck I might pass on. not that they aren't fairly easy to fix but it is a lot of time and effort. issues with compression post are a bit of a pain though several have dealt with it and done it with innovative fixes. Engine is obvious one.  Is your goal to go places or work on the boat. If go places then find one in excellent shape with lots of installed systems. If your on a budget and have to settle for fixer upper then look at stuff that you can afford to fix in a reasonable time frame and price.

Honestly they are old boats and no matter what your going to have some maintenance and probably some remedial maintenance somewhere. Expect to pay 45 to 60 for a mint  DE38  with all new equipment or 100 percent maintained an looking sharp. Average shape with everything working probably mid 30's. Some fixing up  low 30's to mid 20's .. bargain basement fixer up as in rough shape probably 15 to 20. Installed equipment will push that up some depending on what it is. for example our boat has just a 500 watts of solar which would push price up several thousand. We also are using a temp fuel tank till we fix the normal tank which would push price down a 1000 dollars. Maybe look at a 40,000 grand average for a decent boat and then start subtracting for cost of repairing stuff.

Thanks again Scott!   We will look for those items and let you know how our search went this weekend.   Have a good weekend.

Well, I looked at both the 38 and 32.  The 38 had good bones but there would be a lot of TLC and upgrades as the owner only uses it as a hotel room in Bodega Bay.  There virtually have been no real effort, besides hauling out and bottom painting in the last 3 years, to maintain it as a sailboat.  They are asking 40K which is way too much for what I have seen.

The 32 was in good to great shape, a lot of upgrades an engine change and used for sailing.   The only thing I would do is to add a dodger and bimini.  It is a great deal at 23K but it may be a little too small for

what I am going to use it for.  Conundrums, alway decisions.  Scott, thanks for the advice and help and I will sit down to figure it out.

There are more boats out there. 🙂 if you were on the east coast I would say take a look out our DE38.. she is a bit of a fixer upper. We did a lot of stuff to her but other stuff still needs to be done. However right now we have the price set at a firm 26,000 due to those issues. If she doesn't sell in the next few months while I start addressing those issues I will bump the price back up as I get some work done on her. I have to say though that once a DE is on the market they seem to be selling pretty fast now. A few years ago they might take 6 months to a year to sell. Now I have been seeing them going in under 3 months, some even quicker than that.

COMMENTS
