Bystander – 138′ Escort Vessel

bystander yacht for sale

Bystander, the escort vessel to J Class Velsheda

Destined to be the escort vessel of J Class Velsheda, Bystander is the fruit of a close collaboration between Vripak naval architects and the English interior and exterior design firm Rhoades Young Design. Rhoades Young Design created a most classical style, inspired by 1930’s work vessels.  The hull is 42m and cut from steel, while the superstructure is aluminium. Bystander has a twin prop propulsion system, two diesel motors, and autonomy of over 5 400 nautical miles.  Particular attention was paid to the fine details, whether exterior or interior, in order to give Bystander her classic look. In 2006 Bystander won the International Superyacht Society Award in the US for Best Superyacht in the 32 to 43m motor yacht category.

Rhoades Young Design

Interior and exterior designer, rhoades young design had work on this 42m escort vessel in conjunction with vripack naval architects and the jfa shipyard in concarneau – france..

Her profile forward, suggests a rugged workboat with a high bow and steep stem, the concentration of the superstructure weight is forward to leave large working decks aft. The forward section of the boat is very much the rugged end, with painted superstructure and high bulwarks, further aft more yacht style detailing becomes apparent with timber framed windows and panelled bulkheads in the social areas.

The interior is based on a nineteen thirties work boat, refitted for private use.

Furniture detailing reflects the nature of the boat; it is simple, functional and generally understated. In certain areas the detail level is upgraded to lend gravity to areas of importance, whilst pieces of free-standing furniture create a less formalised appearance. Broad plank wooden floors and elements of the original boat form a background of panelled bulkheads and beamed overheads.

The layout provides relaxed, though civilised accommodation with versatility and flexibility when required. A large deck saloon, which can be opened to the aft deck creating one vast sociable area is a rare and impressive space designed with spectating and entertaining in ind. The service areas are kept separate from the guest areas to allow both parties to function without impedance.

BYSTANDER OF MAN

bystander yacht for sale

The yacht BYSTANDER was designed by Charles Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholson in 1934. The client was W. Stephenson, then chairman of Woolworth and owner of the world famous J-class racing yacht VELSHEDA. She was to serve as the original tender for the VELSHEDA, support the racing program and provide accommodation for guests.

An exceptionally beautiful yacht, a remarkably genuine survivor from another age, exuding authenticity and atmosphere.

She offers everything you would expect from a motor yacht of her length, which, depending on experience, requires very little crew, furthermore she offers a impressive comfort for six guests in four cabins.

The yacht need an exterior refit and cosmetics works.

Due to the slump in shipbuilding fuelled by the global economic crisis, BYSTANDER began her life as a “stock boat”, which was speculatively keel-hauled at Camper & Nicholson’s Gosport’s shipyard in order to keep the highly qualified workforce employed.

Stock boats from famous shipyards with famous in-house designers are among the purest – because the architect is able to design and build what he thinks is right, without the input of the customer.

Stephenson had first seen them at an advanced stage of construction and obviously liked what he saw. Soon all accommodation behind the engine room was removed to make room for VELSHEDA’s equipment.

BYSTANDER was launched at Gosport, UK on April 14, 1934. The launch was shown in photos and newsreel films.

1937 Stephenson sold the BYSTANDER.

Its new owner, Wallace D. Roome, was for a long time managing director of the Daily Mirror newspaper and Rear Commodore of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. But the beginning of the Second World War made this a short-lived affair, as BYSTANDER was requisitioned by the government for military service at the British Admiralty’s anti-mine base, HMS Vernon.

It is a little known fact that the BYSTANDER saved 99 souls in May 1940. These were the crew and evacuees of the bombed and sunk Isle of Man steam packet ferry KING ORRY as well as soldiers from the shore.

Decommissioning was followed by a post-war series of short ownerships in UK waters, including Wing Commander J Shepherd, who was stationed in the north of Scotland, with her port of registry changing to Inverness, followed by retired naval commander HB Crane CBE.

She then enjoyed a brief period of use as the floating studio of American born sculptor and yachtswoman Mrs Pauline Boumphrey and her artist friends, including time in Paris and on the Seine.

At some point in the early 1960s she headed south to the Mediterranean and her ownership history, hidden behind company names, becomes harder to trace, though one known owner in the early 1970s was French operetta composer Francis Lopez.

The long tale of the yacht linked to a Russian oligarch and abandoned in the Caribbean for more than 2 years finally draws to a close

  • An undisclosed buyer picked up the Alfa Nero for $40 million last week.
  • The yacht was originally seized from a Russian oligarch in 2022.
  • The sale ended an ownership tug-of-war, which included ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

An undisclosed buyer has finally stepped up to the helm of the Alfa Nero superyacht, ending a two-year-long saga, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

That buyer agreed last week to pay $40 million, a huge discount to the $67.6 million that former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bid last year, a deal he eventually abandoned.

The Antigua and Barbuda government sold the superyacht, which houses an infinity pool that converts to a helipad or dancefloor.

The massively discounted price can be attributed to authorities' need "to get the boat sold," Richard Higgins, a broker who represented the buyer, told Bloomberg.

Higgins said the European buyer, whose identify was kept secret, intends to put the superyacht on the charter market.

The person "is not included in the sanctions list of any country or institution," Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda's ambassador to the US, told Bloomberg.

The 267-foot-vessel was seized by Antigua and Barbuda authorities after it was linked to Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev, who was accused by the US Treasury Department of having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Guryev is the founder of Phosagro, Europe's largest producer of phosphate fertilizers, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

The Alfa Nero was among dozens of superyachts seized following global sanctions against Putin's closest associates, which led to billions of dollars in frozen assets.

The Alfa Nero's maiden owner was Guryev, who purchased the vessel for $120 million, according to the US Treasury and the Antigua and Barbuda government . The Russian billionaire had adamantly denied ownership.

After the vessel was seized in 2022, it remained docked in Antigua's Falmouth Harbour, which cost residents of the Caribbean nation $28,000 in weekly tax dollars for maintenance, which took as many as 44 crew members . The superyacht was then valued at $81 million.

In 2023, the Antigua and Barbuda government put the Alfa Nero up for auction, citing hazards due to a lack of maintenance.Eric Schmidt initially won the bidding, for $67.6 million , but eventually backed out after Guryev's daughter claimed ownership of the superyacht.

The most recent acquisition of the Alfa Nero finally ends its ownership limbo, during which it racked up millions of dollars in port fees under the custody of the Antigua and Barbuda authorities, Darwin Telemaque, the Alfa Nero's port manager, told Bloomberg.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Antigua and Barbuda taxpayers were footing a $28,000-a-week bill to maintain the Alfa Nero, including the salary of an Italian captain and $2,000-a-day in diesel to keep its air conditioning running. That's because if the AC is turned off, it could let mold spread throughout the vessel and ruin the hardwood interior or a Joan Miró painting onboard, per the WSJ.

The long tale of the yacht linked to a Russian oligarch and abandoned in the Caribbean for more than 2 years finally draws to a close

Why did a humpback whale capsize a boat? Here's what really happened.

Experts explain why the incident depicted in a viral video was an accident caused by natural feeding behaviors.

A humpback whale is photographed mid air water droplets trailing along its body.

When an 80,000-pound humpback whale rockets out of the depths, not much can stand in its way.

Brothers Wyatt and Colin Yager recently witnessed evidence of this off the coast of Odiorne Point in Rye, New Hampshire. They captured the shocking moment a humpback breached and then landed on the back side of a small nearby boat, capsizing the vessel. While the two people aboard were thrown into the water, neither the people nor the whale appeared to suffer any injuries.

Given that a group of orcas have been recently documented ramming and capsizing vessels off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the humpback incident has left some online jokingly wondering if the whales aren’t rising up in revolt.

( Why are orcas ramming boats? They might just be bored teenagers .)

Alisa Schulman-Janiger , a marine biologist and lead research biologist for the California Killer Whale Project, assures us that’s not the case. “This was an accident,” she says. “The whale did not attack the boat.”

It was “a collision between a whale 100 percent focused on feeding, and a fishing boat dead in the water (not making any noise),” she says. “In the video, you can see schooling fish jumping out of the water, and out of the whale's expanded mouth.”

Why do humpbacks breach?

Humpback whales typically feed on small crustaceans, known as krill , as well as   entire schools of fish ,   such as   anchovies, cod, sand lance, and capelin. To catch fish, the marine mammals sometimes herd their prey to the surface by releasing strategic curtains of bubbles that trick the fish into believing they’re trapped and have no choice but to go up.

Then, the humpbacks shoot up to the surface with their mouths open, swallowing up schools of fish in a single gulp.

In this case, Schulman-Janiger says the humpback in question had been observed feeding on Atlantic menhaden for several days in the Piscataqua River between Maine and New Hampshire—an unusual occurrence for that area, she notes.

The Coast Guard was apparently aware of the whale, the only one of its kind in the area, and had even issued notices to mariners so that they could watch out for it, according to Dianna Schulte , co-founder and director of research for the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation.

All of that said, Schulman-Janiger says the boat operators appear to have done nothing wrong. Their engine was off, and they were not trying to interact with the whale.

In areas where baitfish (small, fast-breeding species) are concentrated, “humpback whales will gladly take advantage of the easy meal and may have little regard for what is on the surface, including boats,” according to a Facebook post from the New England/Mid-Atlantic department of NOAA Fisheries, “When feeding, humpback whales can be unpredictable and active at the surface.”

How to stay safe around whales

Fortunately, even landing on a human vessel wasn’t enough to deter the humpback from feasting. Schulman-Janiger notes that reports from the scene suggested that after the encounter, the whale continued to feed for another four hours.

At the same time, NOAA advises fishers not to cast lines or troll in areas near humpbacks or visible bubble netting activity . If a bubble cloud appears while you are already fishing, the agency recommends trying to remove your lines or gear, carefully, if possible.

According to NOAA, boats should slow to 10 knots in whale hotspots to prevent collisions, allowing for both you and the whale time to react.

“A collision with a vessel or entanglement in fishing lines can cause serious injuries to the whale and sometimes be fatal. Collisions with whales have also thrown boaters from vessels and caused serious injuries and even death to people.”

Crime and Public Safety

Crime and public safety | lobster miniseason opens with diver flown to hospital, water rescues and possible cocaine discovery.

Four people were rescued by Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials in the Florida Keys on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the start of the two-day lobster miniseason. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office/Courtesy)

Each year the miniseason, also known as “bug hunting,” spans the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, giving divers a chance to scour for spiny lobsters before the commercial boat season, which runs from Aug. 6 through March 31. It ends at midnight Thursday.

In Broward County, the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s Marine Unit gave oxygen to a diver who had a medical issue Wednesday morning but was able to surface on his own, said Claudinne Caro, a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. BSO Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane said the diver had trouble breathing while off of Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park and was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

Three people were rescued about a mile off Fort Lauderdale’s beach after a bystander reported a boat taking on water Wednesday morning, Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicholas Strasburg said. They were brought ashore at Whiskey Creek. No one was injured.

A Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesperson said they had not responded to any calls for help related to the miniseason as of Wednesday afternoon.

In Miami-Dade County, the Coast Guard rescued two people from the water near Bear Cut, south of Miami Beach, shortly before 7 a.m. after a bystander reported a capsized boat, Strasburg said. They were not injured.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called shortly before 8 a.m. about a sinking boat and missing diver near Government Cut in Miami Beach, but the diver was found on another boat, the fire department said. Several hours later, two divers missing near Sunny Isles Beach were found and taken who fire rescue found and took back to their boat. No one was injured.

Florida Keys

In the Florida Keys, a man diving near Boca Chica Bridge in the Lower Keys about 8 a.m. was hit by a boat propeller, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. He was brought ashore at the Key Haven Boat Ramp, and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter landed on Shark Key Bridge and flew him to a hospital in Miami. His condition was not available Wednesday afternoon. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office rescued four people from a boat that began sinking near Mile Marker 39, about a mile away from the Seven Mile Bridge. No one was injured.

By Wednesday afternoon, a diver found a package of suspected cocaine about a mile offshore of Tavernier in the Upper Keys, the Sheriff’s Office said. It was given to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

A diver searching for Spiny Lobster discovered a package of suspected cocaine in the Florida Keys, south of Key Largo, on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the start of the two-day lobster miniseason, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. (Monroe County Sheriff's Office/Courtesy)

Several Miami residents were issued notices to appear in court Wednesday afternoon after Sheriff’s Office officials checked their haul off of Key Largo and found two undersized hogfish, MCSO said.

Rules and safety tips

The FWC’s regulations for lobster miniseason say:

  • Lobsters’ main shell sections must be larger than 3 inches when measured in the water.
  • Daily limit of six lobsters in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, and a daily limit of 12 lobsters in all other parts of Florida.
  • A recreational saltwater fishing license and lobster permit are required.
  • Night diving is prohibited in Monroe County.
  • Lobsters cannot be harvested in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park and in some areas of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Biscayne National Park.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and FWC officials recommend the following safety tips:

  • Wear a life jacket.
  • Always dive with another person and have an easily visible dive flag.
  • Stay within 300 feet of a dive flag in open water and within 100 feet if in an inlet or channel.
  • Boats traveling near the dive flags must slow to an idle.
  • Designate a sober boat driver.
