The Full Haunted Mansion Holiday Script

Published: July 1, 2023 + Updated: October 18, 2023 by Elizabeth Morgan

If you love going on the Haunted Mansion during the holidays, then you may be wondering what the whole Haunted Mansion Holiday script is.

I’ll give you the full Haunted Mansion Holiday Disneyland script in this post!

The Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland gets a makeover during Halloween and Christmas time. It becomes a Disneyland Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion.

The Haunted Mansion speech is very different for the holiday ride than the normal Haunted Mansion ride script.

It features Jack Skellington quotes and the Ghost Host has different lines, like saying bar instead of safety bar.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday is one of my favorite things that Disney parks do for Halloween and Christmas.

Haunted Mansion Holiday Script

(Guests enter the foyer)

Ghost Host- ‘Twas a long time ago (longer now than it seems), In a place that, perhaps, you have seen in your dreams. For the story that you are about to be told Began in the holiday worlds of old. I know you’re curious to see what’s inside. It’s what happens when two holidays collide!

(Guests move into the stretching room)

Welcome, my friends, to our Christmas delight! Come witness a ghoulishly glorious sight. It’s time for our holiday tale to begin. There’s no turning back now—please, come all the way in.

Our holiday tale is a tale that’s quite charming, But during this season, it’s sometimes alarming. So relax and reflect, feel free to take pause, While we tell you a tale about dear Sandy Claws.

(You can hear glass breaking as the room starts stretching)

Ghost Host- ‘Twas the nightmare before Christmas, and all through the house, Not a creature was peaceful—not even a mouse. The stockings, all hung by the chimney with care, When opened that morning would cause such a scare. The children, nestled all snug in their beds, Would have nightmares of monsters and skeleton heads.  (Laughs.)

(Guests hear glass breaking and can see Jack Skellington and Zero above them)

Jack Skellington- Happy holidays, everyone!  (Laughs.) (scream and crashing, then laughter and singing)

Ghost Host- Now hurry along. As they say, “Look alive.” This is one holiday you will want to survive.  (Laughs.)

(Guests move into the hallway)

Ghost Host- Jack Skellington came here from Halloween Town, You’ll notice his handiwork scattered around. This year, he’s decided to play Sandy Claws, But when Halloween creates Christmas… you might see a few flaws.

And now, a dark carriage will take you away. Sit back, rest in peace, in your black Christmas sleigh. Your sleigh will accommodate one or two more. We hope you’re prepared for what Jack has in store.

(Guests get into the Doom Buggies)

Ghost Host- Don’t pull down the bar—it will float down with ease. And keep a close watch on all children, please. All good ghouls and boys must sit safe in their seats, And keep in their sleigh all hands, arms, legs, or feets. (This is repeated in Spanish)

Ghost Host- More rapid than vultures, the Mansion was changed. All was soon covered, adorned, and deranged. And what, to your wondering eyes, disappears, Is Jack’s little friend Zero—the ghost dog reindeer!

Nothing here was forgotten—it all looks so pleasant. “A coffin,” Jack says, “makes a fine Christmas present.”  (Laughs.) A man-eating plant makes a wonderful wreath, As long as you don’t get caught in its teeth!

Jack’s holiday vision was unlike no other, So ring out the bells! There’s more cheer to uncover.

Madame Leota- On the 13th day of Christmas, my ghoul love gave to me Thirteen rings of power—embracing strength that never ends. Twelve signs of the zodiac that rule the future and transcend. Eleven candles floating—their scent of mystery in the air. Ten telling tea leaves that swirl with secrets yet to share.

On the ninth day of Christmas, my ghoul love gave to me Nine magic crystals that sparkle with a force that is pure. Eight balls of knowledge that answer with a truth that is sure. Seven pearls of wisdom to keep my love bewitched to me. Six mystic mirrors, reflecting futures yet to be.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my ghoul love gave to me Five lucky charms, to understand the right from wrong. Four wheels of fortune, to spin their rich and golden song. Three life lines—extending help to those in need. Two passion potions, that love and romance may succeed.

On the first day of Christmas, my ghoul love gave to me A Star! A brilliant star for my fortune card tree.

(Doom Buggies enter into the ballroom)

Ghost Host- With some treats and some games, you can make a scene merry. Why, even a gingerbread house can seem scary! All at once, happy haunts  did  materialize, Like a nightmarish painting by Currier and Ives.

(Doom Buggies enter the attic)

Ghost Host- A bag full of toys, Jack had slung on his back. They were strange and bizarre—and on the attack!

(Doom Buggies enter the graveyard)

Ghost Host- Sandy Claws worked his magic, both outside and in. But one final touch made his bony face grin. “Now what better gift on my friends to bestow Than a graveyard that’s covered in ghostly white snow.”

Jack Skellington- It’s Christmas! Have you been good this year? Ho-ho-ho! What’s this? Can you believe your eyes? I like this Christmas thing! See Zero—I told you they would like our Christmas! Fruitcake anyone? Ho-ho-ho! I really outdid myself this time! Look at all the happy faces. Seasons greetings, everyone! Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hee-hee-hee! It’s Christmas time! Welcome to my Christmas delight! Have you been naughty or nice? I have a special present just for you! Happy Holidays, everyone!

Ghosts (singing)- What’s this? What’s this? What’s this? What’s this?  We wish you a scary Christmas  And a Haunted New Year! Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

When Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, Haunted Mansion was one of the original attractions in the park.

It was inspired by Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion which had opened just two years earlier and was wildly popular with guests of all ages.

While Walt Disney had envisioned a haunted house attraction for Disneyland in his original concept for also Disney World, it would not be completed until after his passing.

The attraction was designed by legendary Imagineers Claude Coates and Marc Davis. Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey worked together to create the ghostly illusions and special effects.

The mansion’s famous rollicking song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” was written by Xavier “X” Atencio.

While the Disneyland and Disney World Haunted Mansion experiences are similar, they are not identical.

How ‘Haunted Mansion’ Integrated Both Versions of the Ride Into Its Sets

Production designer Darren Gilford tells TheWrap about digging into Imagineering’s “Haunted Mansion Bible” for inspiration

"Haunted Mansion"

It was an honor for production designer Darren Gilford to work on Disney’s new adaptation of “ Haunted Mansion .” As one of the first creative Imagineering interns in the ’90s, the attraction has always held a soft spot for Gilford. “It was an opportunity to do something very different,” he told TheWrap. “I’ve never done [something like] this. I’ve only done one other period piece before.” And to see the finished product on the screen, Gilford and his team knew their Haunted Mansion history.

“When we started the project, we had a bible. An Imagineering Haunted Mansion bible which is like a sacred document,” he said. That bible laid out all the nitty-gritty about the ride, which the design team employed to craft recreations of the ride’s iconic portraits, as well as the wallpaper and various other items found inside the house. “There were so many Easter eggs in the details,” Gilford said. One of which was the way the paintings were crafted. The desire was to update them for the movie, as opposed to making carbon copies from the ride, but still making them authentic to the house’s time period.

“We studied the original paintings,” he said. “We changed things to fit our story and proportions, and we painted them all digitally. They’re all painted in the computer, then we print them to the right sizes, and then we overpaint them to get the texture, to make it feel like real oil paintings.”

Gilford went on to talk about integrating both the Disneyland and Disney World versions of the Haunted Mansion for the film.

"Haunted Mansion"

Note: Spoilers for “Haunted Mansion” are below.

Were there films you drew inspiration from for this? I’m a fan of horror for the scares. I was excited to do a scary movie and [find out] how you design for some of those sequences. “Haunted Mansion” is a perfect blend between scares and humor, and that’s the beauty of it. That’s exactly the fine line that we needed to walk with the movie. I was looking at a lot of haunted house movies because I wanted to see how they were shot, how they’re composed.

There were a couple of really old ones from the ’50s that we looked at. Maybe it was “The Haunting?” We were looking at those for the in-camera gags, the mirror gags and some of those compositions, which were fun. And then I was looking at more modern-day films for the Victorian architecture.

"Haunted Mansion"

You have both the Florida and California versions of the Mansion in here. What went into designing both? The Haunted Mansion from Anaheim is the one that I’m most familiar with and I have most affinity for, it’s the original one. I knew that was going to be Gracey’s mansion. We knew that we were going to be in New Orleans, we were going to be in the bayou. It made perfect sense that that was just the natural fit for the exterior, and for a lot of the interior rooms and things we were going to be in that lane. The Florida mansion was what we used for what we call Crump Mansion, and that was based in New England. We liked the red brick, and the design and the architecture of the Florida Haunted Mansion.

We found a great location in Atlanta that we used the grounds for and the staircase going up to it, and then we composited that house in the background for the exterior. But the interior we wanted very, very different. I pushed Justin [Simien] really hard to have a strong contrast between all the texture and color that we’re going to be familiar with, with Gracey to do something different with, and cold and clinical for Crump. I wanted to do a white, gray marble interior, stone cold interior for a lot of those rooms. Those were all sets. I wanted it to feel skeletal, almost like it was made out of skeleton bone or something like that. It was great, all the stones in the floor, all the marble and all the sculpture, the white alabaster was really fun.

“Haunted Mansion” is in theaters now.

Haunted Mansion (Disneyland)

*Sung lyrics in bold.

(Narration begins when guests enter the Mansion foyer.)

GHOST HOST When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!

(Guests move into Stretching Room.)

Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion. I am your host, your  ghost   host . Kindly step all the way in please, and make room for everyone. There’s no turning back now. Our tour begins here in this gallery, where you see paintings of some of our guests as they appeared in their corruptible, mortal state.

CAST MEMBER  (Exact wording varies) Please drag your bodies away from the walls and into the dead center of the room.

GHOST HOST Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room  actually  stretching? Or is it your imagination — hmm? And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows and no doors… which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out! (Laughs.) Of course, there’s always my way.

(Thunder claps, lights go out, someone screams. A body hangs from a noose above the room. Doors begin to open and lights come back on.)

Oh, I didn’t mean to frighten you prematurely. The real chills come later. Now, as they say, “look alive,” and we’ll continue our little tour. And let’s all stay together, please.

(Guests move into hallway.)

There are several prominent ghosts who have retired here from creepy old crypts all over the world. Actually, we have 999 happy haunts here — but there’s room for 1,000. Any volunteers? (Laughs.)  If you insist on lagging behind, you may not need to volunteer.

And now, a carriage approaches to take you into the boundless realm of the supernatural.Take your loved ones by the hand, please, and kindly watch your step. Oh yes, and no flash pictures, please.  We spirits are frightfully sensitive to bright lights.

(Guests board Doom Buggies.)

Do not pull down on the safety bar, please.  I  will lower it for you. And heed this warning: the spirits will materialize only if you remain safely seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside. And watch your children, please.

(Spanish safety spiel)

(Doom Buggies move into Corridor of Doors.)

GHOST HOST We find it delightfully unlivable here in this ghostly retreat. Every room has wall-to-wall creeps, and hot and cold running chills. Shhh, listen!

MAN IN COFFIN Let me out, let me out of here!

(Door knockers clang, clock ticks. Doom Buggies move into Madame Leota’s Room.)

MADAME LEOTA Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat, call in the spirits, wherever they’re at!

(Sounds of ghosts.)

Rap on a table — it’s time to respond. Send us a message from somewhere beyond…

(Knock on table.)

Goblins and ghoulies from last Halloween, awaken the spirits with your tambourine!

(Sound of a tambourine.)

Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond, let there be music from regions beyond!

(A brass instrument plays part of “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”)

Wizards and witches, wherever you dwell, give us a hint, by ringing a bell!

(A bell rings.)

(Doom Buggies pass into Ballroom.)

GHOST HOST The happy haunts have received your sympathetic vibrations and are beginning to materialize. They’re assembling for a  swinging  wake, and they’ll be expecting me… I’ll see you all a little later.

(Organ plays theme music. Two portraits shoot at each other.  Doom Buggies move into Attic.)

BRIDE In sickness and in… wealth. You may now kiss the bride. We’ll live happily ever after. Till  death  do us part. Here comes the bride. As long as we  both  shall live. For better or for… worse. I do. I  did .

(Doom Buggies move past Hatbox Ghost, out Attic window, and into Graveyard.)

VARIOUS GHOSTS When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake, Spooks come out for a swinging wake. Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

Now, don’t close your eyes and don’t try to hide, For a silly spook may sit by your side. Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

As the moon climbs high o’er the dead oak tree, Spooks arrive for the midnight spree. Creepy creeps with eerie eyes start to shriek and harmonize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!

When you hear the knell of a requiem bell, Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell. Restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size!

(Doom Buggies pass into Hitchhiking Ghosts Corridor.)

GHOST HOST Ah, there you are! And just in time… there’s a little matter I forgot to mention — beware of hitchhiking ghosts!

(Doom Buggies pass mirrors showing Hitchhiking Ghosts.)

They have selected you to fill our quota, and they’ll haunt you until you return! Now  I  will raise the safety bar, and a ghost will follow you home! (Laughs.)

FEMALE SAFETY ANNOUNCER Please exit to your left by stepping away from the cars with your left foot first. Step out and stand on the moving platform.

MALE SAFETY ANNOUNCER Please exit by stepping away from the cars with your left foot first. Step out and stand on the moving platform, please.

(Guests exit Doom Buggies and stand on moving platform.)

GHOSTS VOICEOVER If would like to join our jamboree, There’s a simple rule that’s compulsory. Mortals pay a token fee; Rest in peace, the haunting’s free. So hurry back, we would like your company.

LITTLE LEOTA Hurry back! Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate… if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now! We’ve been  dying  to have you…

From rides to reels: magical movies based on disney rides.

By David Young · November 3, 2023

From Rides to Reels Magical Movies Based on Disney Rides

Disney has always been known for creating magical experiences that leave fans enchanted and hungry for more. So, it’s no wonder why the company has turned some of their most well-known rides into big-budget films. From spooky haunted mansions to swashbuckling voyages with pirates, buckle up as we take you on an adventure through Disney’s cinematic adaptations of its most magical (and terrifying) theme park attractions.

Tower of Terror

Based on  the twilight zone  tower of terror.

One installment destined for your go-to kids’ cable channel,  Tower of Terror  was primarily inspired by the iconic theme park ride of the same name, whose atmosphere was riddled with that 1960s blend of terrifying fascination and mystery that made  The Twilight Zone  a cultural phenomenon. Though the California version of this Disney park ride has been replaced by one inspired by  Guardians of the Galaxy , it offers the thrill of the unknown with the Hollywood Tower Hotel in its spooky glory, and the movie inspired by it features a story of the same variety, investigating supernatural, mysterious circumstances surrounding the famous locale. In 2021, it was announced that Scarlett Johansson would produce and star in a new Tower of Terror but details about the plot and production are still unclear.

Mission to Mars

Based on  mission to mars ,  now mission: space, previously rocket to the moon and flight to the moon.

In  Mission to Mars , a Brian De Palma sci-fi flick featuring a space expedition, the Red Planet turns out to be the source of contention, failure, and many large questions. In fact, the largest question that winds up getting answered is whether Mars has life — something that has intrigued us for decades. Mission: SPACE (previously known as Mission to Mars) is one Disney theme park ride that capitalized on that popular intrigue by simulating a voyage to Mars to make guests feel like astronauts themselves. The desire to uncover the secrets of space makes both the ride and the movie clear winners in the hearts of those who ask questions. And that, on its own, is enough to prove why Mission: SPACE belongs in the Magical Kingdom.

The Country Bears

Based on  country bear jamboree.

Only some attractions within Disney parks will emphasize thrills and exciting exploration. In fact, others just exist to bring people joy in other settings. Amusement like this, including the famous (or infamous) animatronic shows at the Happiest Place on Earth, make it clear how creative the Imagineers of the park became when deciding what kind of ways they could keep the attention of the bustling crowds. With Country Bear Jamboree, they did exactly that, creating a country-flavored musical show that required no live performers — and with it came a story about what those Bears got up to when their fame died: the 2002 made-for-TV film,  The Country Bears .

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Based on  pirates of the caribbean.

This swashbuckling adventure is only loosely based on the ride of the same name, known as Pirates of the Caribbean. The movie draws inspiration from several thematic elements of the ride, including pirates, treasure, and supernatural curses. It features the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), whose personality shone brightly as a calling card for the series of pirate flicks to come. While the ride came first, it’s easy to see from the immense success of the movies how some people still believe that the Black Pearl came before the Disney installation.

The Haunted Mansion

Based on  the haunted mansion.

This Eddie Murphy title is a much-beloved film that, much like Pirates of the Caribbean, has a ride now assumed by many to be a later addition to the Disney ecosystem. However, it’s the other way around: The slow-moving and spooky (but friendly) Haunted Mansion ride first inspired the 2003 movie that we know and love, which also encapsulates that feeling of ghosts being not as scary as they first seem.

Tomorrowland

Based on  tomorrowland.

Many of the areas within Disneyland are divided into themes, with specific ideas driving each one. Some of these boroughs are aptly named for their theme, such as Frontierland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, and of course, Tomorrowland. It’s this last one that has inspired a movie loosely based on the conceptual world through which park guests make their way as they explore. Focusing on the space age, Tomorrowland’s presentation of the future inspired  Tomorrowland  in 2015, a cross-dimensional reality where the advancement of technology has spurred well beyond what our own world possesses. With several ideas borrowed from the namesake, including the Animatronics as characters, this film really turned the thematic world of this amusement park into a story entirely on its own.

Pirates of the Caribbean  sequels

Of course, there has been a whole slew of films to meet the beckoning call of the box office. After the blockbuster  Black Pearl , Jack Sparrow and company wormed their way into not one, not two, but several stories fashioned into a franchise. In fact, some sequels have been promised and are still yet to come out yet! Although it looks like the Pirates Ride is seeing a possible discontinuation due to its age, it’s a staple that has brought more than one movie to life.

Jungle Cruise

Based on  jungle cruise ,  previously jungle river cruise.

Jungle Cruise  with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt promises an easy-to-enjoy adventure story, drawing inspiration from another classic Disney attraction, previously known as Jungle River Cruise. This ride is another with animatronic scenes, taking guests on a guided boat tour that features exotic wildlife displays and jokes abound. The movie follows this theme of danger plus humor, capturing the essence of the ride and working to (much like its namesake) feel suitable for every age.

Haunted Mansion

Yet another film based on this supernaturally themed park installment, 2023’s Haunted Mansion  delivers a story much in the same spirit and themes of the ride and the previous film. That said, this movie takes the 20-year gap seriously, introducing different characters and a different story from the previous film — making it less of a remake and more of a spiritual successor, pun intended.

The world of Disney IPs has expanded exponentially over the years, and nowhere is this clearer than with the media that they create. That said, some of their ideas have lasted a lifetime at the park before becoming a part of a movie — making it clear that inspiration can come from everywhere and anywhere, even for the largest entertainment juggernaut of the 20th and 21st centuries!

So What’s the REAL Backstory of Disney World’s Haunted Mansion Residents?

By Brianna LeCompte 2 Comments

Welcome, foolish mortals!

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion  is one of Disney World’s most iconic rides. It was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom and guests still eagerly (and nervously!) anticipate their tour of this spooky spectacle over 50 years later. But just who are the happy haunts we meet in The Haunted Mansion? Let’s take a look!

(But listen up, Mansion diehards — we hear you! This post is JUST the backstory and plot of the Florida version of the Mansion. Each version worldwide has a different backstory and different interpretations of the characters. We’re focusing on Walt Disney World’s Mansion for now, but may take an in-depth look at the others later!)

Wait, What is The Haunted Mansion?

Here’s a brief introduction for those who haven’t yet visited this eerie estate! The Haunted Mansion takes guests on a tour of the ghostly grounds, and it’s led by your very own Ghost Host. The experience begins before even entering the building, as the queue also nods to some of the mansion’s residents , including the debated owner, Master Gracey (but more on THAT later!).

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Haunted Mansion Graveyard

Once guests enter the ride, a Doom Buggy transports them through the mansion, as they observe the activities of the ghostly residents, including a séance conducted by Madame Leota, a party in the Grand Hall, and a menacing bride in the attic.  Now, let’s learn a little more about how these residents came to earn their places in The Haunted Mansion!

Check out the 60th-anniversary merchandise for The Haunted Mansion!

Master gracey.

As mentioned before,  Master Gracey  is the owner of the mansion. Well…sort of. But not really. In addition to spotting his tombstone in the queue, guests will spot a slowly aging portrait of a man over the fireplace when they first enter the mansion. But is this ACTUALLY Master Gracey?

haunted mansion ride script disney world

The Aging Portrait ©Disney

As it turns out, Disney guests had a hand in creating the “semi-official” canon that Master Gracey owns the mansion and adorns the portrait, but it’s still hotly contended amongst Mansion fans!

Master Gracey’s tombstone was one of the original ones installed in the family plot of The Haunted Mansion. This was a tribute to Imagineer Yale Gracey , who had a large role in creating the attraction. Guests and Cast Members were so sure of Master Gracey’s role as the owner of the estate and subject of the aging portrait, that it became adopted as part of the attraction’s backstory, and most notably was a main plot point in the 2003 film adaptation.

haunted mansion ride script disney world

The Haunted Mansion Queue

In reality? No one knows for sure! The portrait was originally referred to as the Aging Man or the Master of the House . His identity wasn’t originally made known when the attraction debuted. Some guests have even interpreted the portrait to be the Ghost Host, but we’ll get to him next!

Looking for more spooky fun? Check out everything returning to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party!

The “ghost host”.

Okay, now it’s time to bust a myth — the omniscient voice which narrates the attraction (our so-called “Ghost Host”) is NOT Master Gracey! Nope, despite the fact that we first hear his voice during the aging portrait scene in the queue, it’s a totally different person…or should we say, spirit…but we do still get a glimpse of him in portrait form on the ride. The Ghost Host’s portrait hangs in the Corridor of Doors . Does he look familiar??

haunted mansion ride script disney world

The Ghost Host’s Portrait ©Disney

Much of the Ghost Host’s story is shrouded in secrecy. Although we do get a glimpse (albeit a very brief one!) into how he met his end in the stretching room (look up when the lightning flashes!). And his portrait illustrates what might have occurred immediately after this scene for our tour guide.

You can “spot” the Ghost Host in one other location on the attraction — the haunted piano your doom buggy crosses in the attraction! Look down and you’ll see the shadow of the Ghost Host playing the piano cast on the floor!

Check out our favorite weird secrets about Disney World hotels!

Constance hatchaway.

Another character guests encounter is the ghostly bride, Constance Hatchaway, but this Black Widow Bride wasn’t a part of the attraction until 2006!

We meet Constance in the attic, as we pass by portraits of her and her former husbands, who each met a violent and untimely demise. Constance was in search of wealth, which she obtained by marrying rich men and then murdering them following their wedding day. That’s why each time we see her in the attic following another marriage portrait, she’s wearing an additional strand of pearls around her neck .

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Spectral Bride in the Haunted Mansion Segment

And it looks like Constance never got caught. How do we know? Well, it turns out we’ve seen her depicted before — Constance is one of the people depicted in the stretching room portraits, sitting on top of her most recently deceased husband’s tombstone.

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Constance’s Portrait in the Stretching Room ©Disney

Prior to 2006, you might recall still seeing a bride — a much spookier one — in the attic. Known unofficially as the Beating Heart Bride , the predecessor to Constance was a much more low-tech bride holding a candle, featuring a loud beating heart sound, no discernible face (short of glowing eyes!), and a glowing red heart in her chest.

This Bride went through a few iterations in both Disneyland and Disney World before ultimately being replaced in 2006 by now well-known Constance! This version of the bride intentionally was never given an official backstory, so her story could be interpreted as both tragic or malicious depending on the guest!

A fun addition with the 2006 graveyard makeover came in the form of Constance’s wedding ring . As you walk the queue (near Master Gracey’s grave by the Captain Culpepper Clyne tomb) look down in the corner. You might spot a wedding ring embedded in the pavement.

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Look Down and to the Right of This Tomb to Find the Ring

This was added as a nod to guests asking if the original Beating Heart Bride’s wedding ring was in the concrete — it was just a ring of metal from a pole in the ground, but the rumor stuck! When the queue was expanded, the Imagineers added a real ring for fans.

Check out 13 of the CREEPIEST things in Disney Parks!

Madame leota.

There is at least one more well-known character guests become a little more familiar with on the attraction — the mysterious Madame Leota.  We see Leota (well, at least we see her head!) as she’s calling out to the spirits in a séance. And while the ride might leave her story a little vague, we can learn more about her with a trip to the Memento Mori shop .

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Memento Mori

Clues throughout the shop let us in on Leota’s backstory. She was a witch living in Salem, Massachusetts, until the beginning of the Salem Witch Trials when she fled the state. She relocated to a village in the Hudson River Valley, New York, and opened a shop called “Memento Mori Curios and Curiosities.”

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Madame Leota Tart

She met the wealthy Gracey family and grew so close to them that she was buried in the Gracey Family Plot upon her death. Guests can spot her watchful — and sometimes OPEN! — eyes on her tombstone right before they enter the mansion!

With Madame Leota-themed merchandise , perfume , and snacks   all sold at various times, this is one mansion resident who’s really made a name for herself!

The Hitchhiking Ghosts

Aren’t these fellas familiar!? If you listen to your Ghost Host near the end of the ride, he may warn you to, “Beware of hitchhiking ghosts!”  He means these guys!

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Hitchhiking Ghost Souvenir Collection from the Haunted Mansion’s 60th Anniversary

These guys don’t have much of a backstory that is known! What IS known is their unofficial names: Phineas (the traveler), Ezra (the skeleton), and Gus (the prisoner). (And for you diehard mansion fans out there, the Hatbox Ghost is different from these dudes and is ONLY in Disneyland.)

Little Leota

“Hurry back. Hurry back. Be sure to bring your…death certificate.”

Did you notice as you exit the Mansion, a tiny-sized bride speaking to you? Constance again?! Not so much.

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Little Leota ©Jeff Krause via Flickr

This bride is affectionately referred to as “ Little Leota ” or the Ghostess (a combination of ghost and hostess!). She was conceived by Imagineer Marc Davis to help you “make final arrangements” to stay in the Mansion at the end of your tour!

She earned the name Little Leota not for her relation to Madame Leota, but rather because her face and voice come from Imagineer Leota Toombs , who was the face actress (but not the voice actress) for the Leota in the Séance Room. Be sure to bid her farewell before you re-enter the mortal world!

Can YOU get the Muppets Haunted Mansion  merch collection?

It turns out there’s more to these spooky specters than meets the eye. From malevolent brides, to friendly mediums, to invisible tour guides, it’s been a pleasure getting to know a few of the 999 happy haunts that reside in The Haunted Mansion! Maybe next time we’ll get into New Orleans plantations and a fella by the name of Captain Gore over at the Mansion in Disneyland. 😉 And remember, there’s still room for one more — any takers??

Disney's Haunted Mansion Will Scare You Silly

Review of the Beloved, Classic Disney Theme Parks Attraction

haunted mansion ride script disney world

Walt Disney World

Coming on the heels of the wildly successful and innovative Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney's New York World's Fair attractions , the Haunted Mansion was part of an incredible burst of creative energy from the company and one of its high watermark moments. Opened in 1969, the ride celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. The classic attraction has remained enormously popular. Casual and ardent fans alike typically rank it among their favorite Disney attractions.

  • Ride rating: 5 stars (out of 5)
  • More silly than scary, the ride is dark, loud...and haunted! Very young children may find it disconcerting.

Note: The four Haunted Mansions (the Disneyland Paris version is called, "Phantom Manor") are essentially similar. At Tokyo Disneyland and Florida's Magic Kingdom, the attractions are virtually identical. The exterior of the original Haunted Mansion at Disneyland in California is markedly different, but the ride experience is largely the same. Paris has a different storyline and other unique elements, but the overall feel takes its cue from the original. Hong Kong Disneyland has Mystic Manor, a decidedly different take on a haunted attraction. This review is based on the California and Florida versions of the ride.

Disney's Filmmaking Techniques

Disney Imagineer Kevin Rafferty says that he and his colleagues use the principles of filmmaking to draw guests into the story. For example, the "establishing shot" sets the tone and piques interest. When approaching the Haunted Mansion in the parks, the stately yet faintly ominous building beckons.

As guests get closer, the "medium shot" of the mansion shows that things are not quite what they seem: a carriage hearse sits in the driveway, a large planter is overturned, and expressionless attendants mill about. Later in the attraction, the "close-up shots" bring details into view, and all hell—literally!—breaks loose.

The Stretching Room

The experience begins in the foyer as cast members instruct guests to "fill in all of the dead space." (The Haunted Mansion may have Disney's second-best pun-laden spiels, after the Jungle Cruise.) The booming recorded voice of the Ghost Host bids a fond, "Welcome, foolish mortals," and a panel opens to lead guests into the portrait chamber, also known as the stretching room. This is where things start getting wacky.

As the room "stretches" ( Is the ceiling rising or the floor sinking? It depends on which version of the Haunted Mansion you visit ), the dignified portraits reveal more and get sillier until the stretching stops. The Ghost Host intones that there are no windows or doors in the room, and that he holds our fate—which may have something to do with the corpse hanging from the dome at the top of the room.

Mercifully, a door opens that leads to the ride's load area. Chandeliers, positively bursting with cobwebs, barely light the way. The eyes of characters in the paintings appear to follow guests as they walk through a hallway to the ride vehicles. The portraits then magically morph into scarier, alternate scenes. In 2005, Imagineers were able to sync the changes in the portraits to lightning strikes.

The vehicles, known as Doom Buggies, use Disney's Omnimover system. Originally designed for Disneyland's Adventure Through Inner Space attraction, the endless, ever-moving stream of vehicles offers huge ride capacity (and requires the familiar warning that "the walkway is moving at the same speed as the vehicles.") Imagineers tweaked the Omnimover concept by giving the Doom Buggies the ability to independently turn and tilt. Using Rafferty's filmmaking comparison, the guests are like cameras, and the vehicles pan and focus their attention at precise moments during the ride.

Scared Silly

While there isn't a linear story in the more traditional sense of an attraction like Peter Pan's Flight, the Haunted Mansion offers a three-act play, according to Imagineer Tony Baxter (as recounted in the wonderful book, "The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies" by Jason Surrell). The basic premise is that the mansion is a retirement home for ghosts. 999 of them have taken up residence but there's room for one more as the Ghost Host likes to remind us foolish mortals.

In the first act, the tension builds as weird things happen in the library, music room, conservatory, corridor of doors, and the endless hallway (the latter is one of our favorite Haunted Mansion scenes). Objects randomly float, a hand pushes against a coffin lid, a grandfather clock tolls 13, and mournful wails beckon behind strange doors. These unseen creatures are perhaps the scariest part of the ride and reflect the influence of Imagineering legend Claude Coats, who wanted the Haunted Mansion to be a mostly frightening experience.

The Seance Room serves as a curtain between the acts, according to Baxter. Here, Madame Leota issues incantations inside her crystal ball to rouse the spirits. In Act 2, the ghosts emerge to cavort in the Grand Ballroom and scare you silly in the attic. The Ballroom scene, with its huge banquet table and waltzing ghosts, is among the Haunted Mansion's highlights. In the attic, we meet the bride, a remnant from one of the attraction's early storylines. Imagineers traded out what had been a static figure for the eerie, dimensional character that now resides in the mansion. Known as Constance, she provides quite a scare with her glowing, loudly beating heart.

In the Disneyland version of the ride, as passengers leave the attic, they are greeted by the Hatbox Ghost. A character who briefly appeared when the Haunted Mansion first opened, but was removed because the gag didn't quite hold up, his legend has grown through the years. As part of Disneyland's 60th anniversary Diamond Celebration, the park debuted an all-new Hatbox Ghost. The effect is wonderful. As guests pass, they see the cloaked ghost holding an empty hatbox. Suddenly his head disappears, only to reappear inside the hatbox. It's both funny and creepy.

In Act 3, the Doom Buggies "fall" out the attic window and into the graveyard. This is where the spirits go bonkers and things turn silly. Ghosts pop up everywhere, the music kicks in full force, and those wonderful singing busts harmonize for a rousing rendition of " Grim Grinning Ghosts ." Marc Davis, Imagineer extraordinaire and one of Disney's "Nine Old Men" of animation, pushed for a tamer Haunted Mansion, and his lighter touch prevails throughout the latter part of the ride, particularly in the graveyard scene.

The finale takes place in the crypt where one of the hitchhiking ghosts hops into the Doom Buggy with the guests, and a tiny ghoul implores everyone to "Hurry back." Foolish mortals that we are, we follow her advice.

Haunted Mansion

Well, we’ve been waiting all day, and the ride has finally reopened! Let’s go see what’s changed.

Haunted Mansion Reopens

Many people thought that this short closure was so that Disney could install the iconic Hatbox Ghost that Disney confirmed would be coming to the ride sometime this year .

Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” Ride Closure Delayed by Disney Parks

It appears as if the 1000th Happy Haunt will have to wait, as Disney is delaying the closure of one of their Haunted Mansion rides.

For many years, The Walt Disney Company has maintained an unparalleled standing in the realm of theme park entertainment. It has consistently strived to provide exceptional experiences to visitors, incorporating state-of-the-art technology across its diverse parks around the globe.

Disney’s excellence in innovation is widely recognized, exemplified by the integration of new technology. Augmented reality elements in attractions like the Haunted Mansion and the utilization of advanced drone technology in their acclaimed nighttime shows are but a few examples. Despite Disney’s steadfast dedication to quality, there may still be occasions where this exceptional standard is not fully achieved .

The Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, has gained renown as “The Happiest Place On Earth,” a phrase coined by Walt Disney and consistently upheld throughout the company’s history.

Over time, Disney’s influence expanded globally, encompassing destinations such as the Walt Disney World Resort and the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. The reach of the Disney Resort brand extended even further, spanning iconic locations like the Tokyo Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, and the Disneyland Paris Resort.

Disneyland Paris’ “Haunted Mansion” to Close

Phantom Manor in Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris

Adhering to Walt Disney’s principle of continual improvement, often referred to as “plussing,” Disney parks consistently embrace advancements. This latest wave of commitment to high standards and “constantly going above and beyond” can be seen in Disneyland Paris Resort’s very own unique Haunted Mansion — as the “Wild West” variant, Phantom Manor, is slated to close for refurbishment.

Retaining many iconic features from the original Haunted Mansion concept like Madame Leota’s Seance Room, the Endless Corridor, the Ballroom, and even the Portrait Corridor, guests to Paris’ unique Phantom Manor get a taste of other Mansion rides, with distinct Frontierland theming and story tied to nearby Big Thunder Mountain.

Reporter DLP Report recently shared the latest changes for refurbishment in the former EuroDisney park.

Previously, it was reported that Phantom Manor in Disneyland Park’s Frontierland would close from March 11-22, 2024, Now however it appears as if Disney is keen to delay this refurbishment a whole week later, to begin on March 18 until March 29, 2024:

(initial post) 🔧 Refurbishment Update for March 2024. Buckle up. – Big Thunder Mountain reopens March 16 (closes Jan 29) – PhilharMagic: March 4 – TBD – Pays des Contes/Casey Jr: March 11 – TBD, likely for the addition of scenes – Phantom Manor: March 11-22 – Crush’s Coaster: March 11-22
An update: the Phantom Manor closure has moved by a week: March 18-29.

Disney is renowned for its impeccable presentation and pristine building facades. Walt Disney’s dedication to cleanliness and aesthetics was so intense that even Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion was prohibited from having a visibly worn and crumbling exterior.

Although Phantom Manor does not exactly follow that ethos, having a noticeably spooky exterior, it’s inevitable that some maintenance or “plussing” still needs to be carried out for the beloved ride.

Phantom Manor is marked as “available” for the week of March 11-17 on the Disneyland Paris official website.

10+ Best Rides at Magic Kingdom for Adults

W ant to know more about the best rides at Magic Kingdom for adults? Though we love bringing the family along, a Disney trip is every bit as much fun when it’s adults only! Don’t tell the kids, but these are some for our favorite attractions to ride when we leave them with Grandma and Grandpa!

If you’ve never taken an adults only trip to Disney, you’ve been missing out. While there’s no doubt that Walt Disney World is a magical place for children, it’s just as much fun for the grownups.

I love all the Disney parks but the Magic Kingdom just happens to be the perfect place for a romantic getaway with that someone special! I mean, it’s all about the fairy tale, right?

It’s also a really great destination for a girl’s trip!

Not only is it a completely different experience when you leave the kids behind, it’s a whole lot easier too. You don’t have to think about the height requirements for rides , pushing strollers though busy crowds or mid-day meltdowns.

The only difference is that you may not want to ride all the of the same rides. For example, I probably won’t be riding Dumbo if I don’t have anyone with me who’s under the age of 10. I’m just sayin’

However, one of the best things about Magic Kingdom is that there ARE so many awesome rides for adults. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a roller coaster fanatic or prefer more relaxing rides where you can just sit back and enjoy the experience.

Best Rides At Magic Kingdom For Adults

Space mountain.

Location: Tomorrowland

Space Mountain is the perfect Disney coaster for those who love thrill rides. With an outer space theme, this classic ride has been a favorite since 1975, and with good reason.

Housed in a giant dome and complete with space-themed music, this ride through outer space is full of exciting twists, turns, and sudden drops from start to finish. To add to the excitement, all of this happens in the dark, so you never know exactly what’s coming next!

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Roller Coaster

Location: Fantasyland

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is perfect for those who aren’t hard-core thrill seekers but still want a fun roller coaster experience. This family-friendly roller coaster is based on the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie, featuring all your favorite characters, songs, and scenes from the movie.

Even the line is entertaining, with fun interactive experiences as you wait. Create fun patterns with gemstones (or see who can come up with the seven dwarfs names the fastest!).

The cars on this indoor-outdoor roller coaster simulates the experience of being in a mine cart, complete with tipping and swaying from side to side as it races along the track.

This is one of the top rides in the park so you can expect a pretty long wait. I recommend getting to the park early and hitting this one first thing.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Location: Frontierland

An abandoned mine shaft is the setting for the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad . It’s easy to see why this classic roller coaster has been Magic Kingdom favorite for more than 40 years.

Like the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, this coaster runs both indoors and outdoors. You’ll take a wild and twisty ride through a Wild West ghost town as you explore a cursed mine shaft and zoom through the surrounding canyons.

It’s also another great place for a photo opp. If you have the Disney PhotoPass, look for a Disney photographer near the exit.

Splash Mountain

When you need cool off from the Florida heat, you’ll want to head to Splash Mountain . This fun log flume ride takes riders through a southern bayou with a host of animal characters including Br’er Bear and Br’er Fox…for now.

However, Disney has announced that they’ll soon be re-theming this attraction with an all new Princess And The Frog theme. This is pretty exciting if you love the Disney princesses as much as we do!

This water ride starts out calm and serene, slowly building to a thrilling steep drop near the end. Be warned that you will probably get wet on this ride no matter where you sit. However, if you choose a seat in the back, your chances of getting completely soaked are slightly less. I’m not making any promises though, so it never hurts to bring along a disposable poncho !

Haunted Mansion

Location: Liberty Square

No theme park would be complete with a spooky haunted house. Disney’s Haunted Mansion is one of the best – and most famous – in the world. Located in Liberty Square, a Ghost Host guides you through this creepy haunted estate complete with a seance room, a ghostly graveyard, and other scary surprises.

Those who are brave enough to enter will travel through this dark ride in special cars known as ‘Doom Buggies,’. Be warned though…phantom hitchhikers have been known to tag along on the tour.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Location: Adventureland

Pirates of the Caribbean is undoubtedly one of the most popular rides in the Magic Kingdom. The lines can be a little long but we think this ride is worth the wait.

Riders enter a Spanish fort to board their boats, then set sail for a 17th century Caribbean adventure. There are plenty of pirate adventures along the way and if you keep your eyes peeled, you may even see Captain Jack Sparrow himself!

We never visit Disney without hitting up this attraction! It’s definitely one of our favorites, with or without the kids.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

If you have a competitive streak, you’ll love Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin . This attraction, part ride and part video game, is based on the popular Toy Story character.

This ride takes you on a cool space voyage, where you’ll board a star cruiser to help Buzz save the universe. Riders use joysticks to spin their cruiser 360 degrees, taking aim at an enemy robot army.

The fun of this ride is competing against each other to get the high score. I have yet to win against my hubby but I’m determined to take him down one of these days!

It’s A Small World

A classic Disney Ride and definitely one of the most famous, It’s a Small World is a must for Magic Kingdom visitors.

This musical boat tour takes you through all seven continents, with adorable dolls representing children from around the world. Just be warned, the ride’s iconic signature song will be stuck in your head long after the ride is over.

It’s a Small World is an experience that both young children and adults can enjoy. It’s always a fun one for me, whether I’m with the kids or not.

Jungle Cruise

Climb on board Disney’s Jungle Cruise attraction for low key riverboat tour through the lush forests and waterfalls of the Amazon and the African Congo.

What makes this ride so much fun is the Disney cast member that serves as your skipper and tour guide. As they point out sights along the way, their commentary is peppered with some of the corniest jokes you’ve ever heard.

But the jokes are so bad, they’re good, and I dare you not to crack a smile. It’s seriously the best part of the ride!

While the silliness is my favorite part, you’ll also spot all kinds of animatronic jungle animals on the tour. Look for hippos, monkeys, elephants and more!

Tomorrowland PeopleMover

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is an elevated tram ride that gives visitors a relaxing ten-minute tour of Tomorrowland. This narrated tour takes riders behind the scenes of several popular rides, including Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

Whether you’re a first time Magic Kingdom visitor or a regular, you should give the Tomorrowland People Mover a try if you’ve never experienced it. It’s a great way to rest your feet and chill while getting a unique view of some of the park’s attractions from a different perspective.

TRON Lightcycle Run (Coming Soon)

Currently under construction, this exciting roller coaster is based on the popular sci-fi films. Riders hop aboard individual lightcycles (similar to motorcycles) and reach speeds of close to 60 miles per hour.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the lightcycles at a Disney event awhile back. I have a feeling that riding one of these along a roller coaster track is going to be pretty dang cool!

It’ll be the fastest of any Disney coaster and I for one can’t wait to ride it! No word yet on when it’ll be ready but rumor has it they’re doing test runs now. I’ll be sure to keep you updated!

Tips And Tricks

While these rides are perfect for adults, they are also some of the most popular in the park. They usually have long lines but if you download the Disney app, you can check wait times to determine the best time to ride. I haven’t tried the Disney Genie+ yet but that’s another option.

Where To Stay

Wondering where to stay? We love staying on property and if you’re looking for ideas, check out my reviews of Disney’s Riviera Resort and the Contemporary Resort .

My favorite Disney property of all time is Animal Kingdom Lodge , though we were so on-the-go for that trip that I never had time to take pictures for a post. It’s not cheap but it’s definitely worth the splurge if you can swing it!

Walt Disney World truly is a magical place for visitors of all ages and these rides are a great way to experience the magic for yourself. So next time, drop the kids off with the grandparents and have your own grown up Disney adventure instead.

Do you agree with the Disney rides on this list? What are some of your own favorites?
