"Ghost" is a metroidvania where two super hackers hire a mysterious agent in order to infiltrate the Nakamura Space Station and steal the greatest electronic secret ever. Of course, the space station will defend itself, which is where the fun begins: the station's defences, with their never-ending arsenal of weapons and artifacts, will have to be destroyed. But the story gets more complicated when the hackers find out about their agent's hidden ties... WEAPONS: Weapons reload on the go and they never run out of bullets. No need to hoard ammo for the boss battle! The various weapons can be found or purchased (depending on the game mode) and each one has its strengths and weaknesses. GHOST: The protagonist is not the android you see, but the being that remotely controls it: a mysterious digital ghost that can leave its robot chassis, pass through doors and walls, control enemy androids, and use their own tools against them. What happens if the robot you control gets destroyed, you ask? Then your ghost will be free to control something else, or return to your main body. UPGRADES: You can have as many as you can collect. The upgrades are passive, so they work without needing any special controls, and they don't run out or deactivate. They come in a large assortment, from aggressive drones to bullet improvements. Remember that the more you get, the more OP you are. ITEMS: Devices you can use at any time. High-tech equivalents to potions and scrolls. GEEKIES: Spread throughout the game are hidden "geekies". If you find one and activate it, something related to that geekie will change in the game (not affecting gameplay)... and the challenge is to find out what changes. I know, it sounds silly, but some of them are funny. SECRETS: 200 rooms have secrets in them that can be revealed by performing a specific action. If you find a secret, you're rewarded with a small permanent powerup that will make your character more powerful. In addition, finding all of the secrets in each level will reward you with something very special. MAP: The whole map has around 300 rooms, divided into zones. Each zone has its own enemies, its own ambience, its own soundtrack, and, of course, its own boss. STORY: The story is not to save the world, but rather to go on an intruiging journey wrought with humor. Not to mention all the dialogues and cinematics, all voiced in English. GAME MODES: Ghost has 2 game modes: "classic" and "survival". Classic is similar to a metroidvania, where the more you advance through the game, the more stuff you obtain and the harder the enemies become. Survival is crazier, as you get stuff much faster and you'll soon turn into a killing machine, but you lose everything when you die. SKILL TREE: The RPG component of the game is found in the skill tree, where you can spend skill points to level up characters, obtaining special skills for each one. Depending on what skills you select, your gameplay will change in an interesting way. And the rest is a mystery, one that I shouldn't spoil... you'll just have to discover the rest on your own.

Ghost 1.0 Review

ghost 1.0 switch

Set in the distant future, you play as Ghost, and you are hired by two hackers to infiltrate the Nakamura Space Station. Nakamura is the world’s largest developer of androids, known as Nakas, and your mission is to locate and steal their source code within the enormous station. Ghost uses a chassis (or female android) for her physical body, but her spirit can leave the body and hack other androids, which guard the Station. She works as a freelance spy, but refuses to share any personal details with Boogan and Jacker, the two Cybercriminals who have hired her. These two are in constant communication with Ghost and give her vital information, hack security systems for her, and provide extra story.

This game is clearly inspired by Metroid and plays very similarly. You must explore the giant station by unlocking new objectives. To this end you’ll find yourself needing to collect keys to gain access into locked areas, obtain skill points to gain new abilities, earn currency by defeating enemies, and discover secrets locations via careful navigation. Your primary weapon is a blaster gun, and from the onset most of your enemies are androids, robots, and weapon turrets. Ammo is unlimited, but you have a numeric meter that counts down to zero, and when that’s hit you’ll have a cool down period while it replenishes. Your health starts at 300, but you’ll be able to find upgrades to make you stronger.

ghost 1.0 switch

When you kill enemies you’ll obtain currency, health, or weapon energy. There are dozens of weapon upgrades you can purchase from item stores, and you’ll want them. The game is nearly impossible without powering up your weaponry to take out the ever-increasingly difficult enemies on your journey. You’ll want to spend money as soon as you earn it to maximize your lethality. You obtain skill points by locating access codes, and using these will unlock new abilities, like a double jump. Save rooms allow you to refill energy, save your progress (by making a 3D printing of yourself), and teleport to previously found save rooms. When you die, you can pick which save room to continue in, but you’ll need to go to the spot of your death to regain any weapon upgrades you’ve purchased. The map and menu systems are set up nicely and are simple to navigate and comprehend.

In many rooms you’ll be unable to progress traditionally and you’ll have to figure out a puzzle. Your spirit form can pass through walls, which you can then possess an android in order to activate a switch to unlock a door or engage a lift. Some rooms are packed with guards; so taking control of a powerful android and killing off the others while your chassis stays out of harm’s way is a necessity. This feature is the most unique factor of Ghost 1.0 (and helps explain the name of the game), however it doesn’t really add much to the game’s fun factor. Unfortunately there are rooms that have alarms that, once triggered, turn into small kill rooms where you have to fight off hordes of attackers. I rarely enjoy these types of scenarios in any game, and it’s not fun here either.

ghost 1.0 switch

Unlike in Metroid games (except Other M ), Ghost has a personality and talks frequently with Jacker, the overweight computer nerd hacker and Boogan, the cool Samuel L. Jackson-inspired roboticist. There is a lot of silly and snarky dialogue between the three, and the game pokes a lot of fun at itself. However the story that unravels is fairly predictable and unmemorable. I was more excited to unlock new areas and purchase weapon upgrades, than closely follow the storyline.

Where the game stumbles greatly is in its environmental ambiance. Super Metroid is great for hundreds of reasons, but what stood out to me the most is its gorgeous atmosphere. Each zone has its charms and is memorable and unique. The entire adventure is magical because of this. In Ghost 1.0, there is little of that. Most of the rooms in the Space Station are repetitive and uninspiring. Without a map, you’d never figure out where you’ve been, as nothing really stands out. The common enemies, as well as Ghost are rather small on the screen and lack any great detail or imagination. Even the bosses failed to impress me. All of the eeriness and isolation that Metroid inhabits is absent from Ghost 1.0 .

ghost 1.0 switch

However, I was pleased with the soundtrack. The high-energy rock music is a perfect fit for the Sci-Fi theme, although it can’t compete with the score found in Super Metroid . The animation during the cut scenes looked nice, certainly more fun than the dull Space Station. I was satisfied with the voice acting and that helped shape the three main characters. The controls take a lot to get used to. I tried the default method for a while, but jumping with ZL proved to be too difficult for me. Luckily you can easily change the layout in the options screen.

There are multiple modes to choose from. I played on the recommended Classic, which plays in a traditional fashion; enemies get harder as you progress. In Survival mode you obtain special items quicker and become stronger faster, but the enemies are all harder and you lose everything when you die. There are 3 modes of difficulty to choose from as well. Finally there’s a bonus Mission Mode, which features short individual missions to complete.

ghost 1.0 switch

I had an all right time with Ghost 1.0 , but overall the game is rather generic and fails to do anything truly special in comparison to its contemporaries. Boring environments, average story, and dull villains really hold this game back from becoming a classic. The enemy trap rooms could be overwhelming and the Ghost mode didn’t add much to the game. However, I really enjoyed the weapon upgrades, soundtrack, and exploration. The characters and humor worked pretty well, making it come across as a lighter Metroid -style game. This is an above-average game that is easy to learn, and can provide several hours of fun, however there are just too many similar games that offer much better overall experiences.

Final Thoughts: WORTH CONSIDERING

There’s no shortage of Metroidvania games on the Nintendo Switch. Ghost 1.0 is fun to explore, features some great music, and has some memorable weapon upgrades. However, the boring environments, mediocre story, and senseless kill rooms hold it back form being something truly special.

Ghost 1.0 Review

Spirited away.

The Switch has become home to a number of quality ‘Metroidvania’ titles in recent months, with games such as  Axiom Verge,   Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and Hollow Knight garnering critical acclaim across the board. Developer unepic_fran looks to join the ranks with a port of their 2016 title Ghost 1.0 , a game that impresses with its controls, but loses big marks for slightly bland level design. As such, it’s a good game, but not quite great .

Taking on a certain ‘cyberpunk’ sci-fi aesthetic, Ghost 1.0 takes place in the future whereby you play as the titular character, who is in fact a ghost, despite her initial physical form. Working in conjunction with two cyber-criminals, you must infiltrate a high-tech facility owned by the Nakamura Corporation. Starting out, you’re introduced to the game’s various mechanics at regular intervals – although I must admit that the interruptions were a bit too frequent for my liking, and I found myself wishing I could just get on with it.

ghost 1.0 switch

Ghost 1.0 controls very much like a standard Metroidvania title crossed with a twin-stick shooter. You move through the environments, jumping across obstacles and unlocking new paths along your way. The handgun at your disposal is your primary form of offence, and by moving the right analogue stick, you can point it in any direction, covering a full 360 degree radius. It contains unlimited ammo, so you won’t have to go looking for supplies along your way, but keep in mind that the bullets will gradually replenish over a few moments, so don’t go too trigger-happy with it.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Ghost 1.0 , however, is the fact that your character is merely commandeering a robotic chassis. Ghost is, after all, a spirit, and as such can leave her primary body behind and float around the environment. By doing so, you can actually inhabit the bodies of other robots, turning what would normally be a deadly foe into a useful vehicle to progress further. These moments are fleeting, and you’ll mainly only be using this ability to press hidden switches, or to take out a group of enemies, but it’s a cool feature that sets Ghost 1.0 apart from its contemporaries.

ghost 1.0 switch

Sadly, whilst the gameplay mechanics are mostly sound, the overall visuals are a bit lacking, and the environmental design in particular leaves a lot to be desired. You’ll see a lot of the same doors, elevators and crates along your journey, and I just wish that this could have been mixed up a bit more. Additionally, there was no effort in filling the screen with artwork – aside from the actual corridor area which you’re running around in, the rest of the screen is pure black. Enemy design is okay, but you’ll mostly be dealing with a lot of the same type of humanoid robots.

Ghost 1.0 is overall a really enjoyable entry to the Metroidvania genre. Its got a decent cast of characters and a plot that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The twin-stick gameplay is engaging in a similar way to Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS, and the ability to turn into a ghost at any point is genuinely cool, if a bit undercooked. Unfortunately, there are other, far better examples of the genre on Switch you should probably try first.

Ghost 1.0 features strong gameplay hooks in the form of twin-stick shooting and enemy possession to keep players engaged to the end. Sadly, it’s not quite up there with other metroidvanias on Switch.

Playstation universe.

Ghost 1.0 has the heart of a beloved project and the soul of the best Metroidvania games in the industry. Despite its few quirks, the balance between accessibility and challenge, coupled with intriguing writing makes Ghost 1.0 a worthy pickup for even those with some curiosity about the game.

Nintendo Life

Ghost 1.0 is a lighthearted Metroidvania that adapts a sprawling sci-fi setting with some really creative takes on the genre. Even though it originally released on PC two years ago, it still manages to fit right into the Switch's growing library of quality sprite-based action adventures. If you're looking for a less somber journey after the harrowing depths of Hollow Knight, you could do far worse than Ghost 1.0 as long as the forgettable story and cringe-inducing humor aren't too off-putting..

Everyeye.it

Francisco returns on the scene with another metroidvania, adding, in order to renew the genre, rogue-like elements. The result is satisfying but imperfect, especially as regards the balance. It represents a shooter inspired exponent of the genre, with a slight irony that lies underneath and involves the player. If youre a fan, youd better have a look at it.

Review: Ghost 1.0 (Nintendo Switch)

' src=

The world of Ghost 1.0 is presented to you in the form of an intro video, comprised of news clips and soundbites of conversation that offer you snippets of this reality from a number of perspectives. It quickly immerses you in the sci-fi world, which simultaneously feels futuristic and retro in design.

You play as a robot, commanded by two hackers, on a mission to reach the core of a space station. Ghost has a lot of personality. Each time she is defeated in battle, she prints a new body and floats into it – you get attached to each one. She is funny and has a great rapport with the hackers she communicates with via radio, with banter that is wonderfully voice acted and relevant to contemporary nerd culture.

ghost 1.0 switch

The emphasis on the stealth required for your mission is a little bit tongue in cheek, as you do have awesome firepower, even with just your standard weapon.

Although the adventure you go on does clearly fit a narrative, the game feels like it’s giving you a lot of freedom to explore in your own way at your own pace. It gives you the basic information you need to play and manoeuvre your character and your weapons, but it doesn’t hold your hand.

Along with your starter gun, you can collect a variety of weapons and learn a range of different skills. One of the key functionalities of Ghost is how she floats out of the body she is using and takes over the body of an enemy robot.

ghost 1.0 switch

This is used to allow you to solve puzzles, which are generally easy enough to do. The level of detail in this is fantastic, in that there are very subtle differences between how fluidly each type of robot handles, so you do want to get back into your sophisticated original shell. These puzzles aren’t often terribly difficult, but there is enough challenge that they’re entertaining.

It also gives you a legitimate reason why checkpoints exist within the game world. Every time you die, you need to 3D print yourself a new body to work from.

The same level of detail is implemented throughout the game. For instance, the sooner you pick up a power-up, the more effective it is. This kind of subtlety throughout makes for a game that requires you to be perceptive to really master it.

ghost 1.0 switch

There are no guarantees about what weapons you’ll come across and it’s easy to get lost in the maze of the space station. This makes for a new experience almost every time you die.

Ghost 1.0 is a hugely entertaining game, with a great sense of humour, charming cutscenes, and a weirdly relatable robot protagonist. It’s a creative take on the genre, with a lighthearted attitude that is easy to love.

ghost 1.0 switch

A fun blend of futuristic and retro, with good game mechanics and a strong sense of nerd humour.

Overall feeling: I Like it a Lot!

Ghost 1.0 is a humorous metroidvania game. You play as the mysterious Ghost hired by hackers in order to infiltrate the Nakamura Space Station and steal information from a large company. But the space station defends itself! With Ghost’s unique abilities and help from the hackers you have to fight off enemies, and explore hidden areas. The story gets more complicated when the hackers find out about their agent’s hidden ties…

A Digital Ghost and Her Guns

ghost 1.0 switch

Ghost is not simply an android, but a digital ghost capable of leaving the android body to control enemy androids. You use this ability often to activate switches, make use of their abilities, and thin out enemies in the next area. Ghost wields a gun that recharges in little time. Along the way you can purchase other types of guns and power ups with the yellow cubes found throughout the station. The best way to get cubes is tripping alarms. When the alarm goes off robots, lasers, and flying devices will come out to attack you. If you survive you should activate the console in the room. Crates of cubes are awarded to you.

ghost 1.0 switch

As you explore you collect passwords to open other areas of the station. I was very happy to find while exploring you can teleport from one saving point to another. The saving points take the form of 3D printers that create new androids when you die or perform  repairs. Also no scifi adventure would be complete without large mechanical boss fights. There are two modes for Ghost 1.0: Classic is the adventure that progressively becomes more challenging. Survival is unforgiving, but weapons are collected easily.

ghost 1.0 switch

Houston, We Have Humor

I’m always interested in the character dialogue.  The two hackers make references to science fiction movies and bicker with each other.  On the other hand Ghost has a dry sense of humor and is firm on keeping her own secrets. Animated scenes show the hackers discussing their goals and bickering. We also get a peek at the company’s realization of an intruder.  The graphics have a retro look and glowing lights for your science fiction immersion.

ghost 1.0 switch

I highly recommend Ghost 1.0. It is a fun game with funny and quirky dialogue. The power ups and destructive weapons make Ghost a joyride of a game. Which is why I can safely give this game an Like it a Lot!
