Think you’ve ticked off everything London has to offer? Think again. Try a Thames river cruise – and no, we’re not talking about the Clippers (well we are, but only a little bit). There are few better ways to take in the capital than by its famously choppy, murky central waterway. Plus the views, from Hampton Court down to the City and Greenwich, are some of the absolute finest our city has to offer.
It's time to ditch dry land and hop aboard a Thames river boat tour. And plenty of London’s top attractions are best seen from the water – so get your camera ready.
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
Thames rockets.
Bring your waterproofs, because the slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation offers a high-speed ride on the Thames. It's a great way to discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots – that’s nearly 35 mph, nautical novices! We're not sure how much you'll actually be able to see, but there are plenty more leisurely-paced tours for that sorta thing.
A good river cruise for those who want a spot of grub while taking in the sights along the Thames – Bateaux offer a full range of different dining cruises. There’s the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner cruise – or you could really pull the stops out and enjoy their three-course lunch with a live jazz band playing assorted swingin’ classics. All river cruises depart from Victoria Embankment.
Want to see the city in style? City cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. All the departure points are convenient for the city’s various sights, with Greenwich Pier ideal for the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.
Praise whichever brilliant mind decided to paint the scant remaining WW2 landing vehicles in bright, rubber-duck yellow! These duck city tours take in all the typical land-based sights – then has two ‘splashdowns’ into the Thames as it goes into nautical mode and takes passengers around Docklands, Canary Wharf and Greenwich.
Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph. Lifejackets and waterproofs are provided (fortunately), leaving you free to enjoy whizzing around in figure-eights in open water between Tower Bridge and the Isle of Dogs. Try and take in some sights as the high winds reshape your face.
Thames River Boats take you all the way from the Palace of Westminster upriver to Hampton Court Palace. It’s a pretty leisurely 22-mile journey: in 90 minutes you’ll be at Kew; in another 90, you’ll be at Hampton Court. But this westward route is a lovely way to appreciate the Thames, as the banks get greener, less cluttered with high-rise buildings and the river buses are replaced by rowers.
These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames.
Why choose between the road and the river when you can have both? First up on this guided tour you'll be driven round the capital in a routemaster (that's the old red double decker bus), before boarding a Thames Cruiser to view the sites from the water. Sail past landmarks like Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge, before getting back on the bus and heading to her Maj's residence: Buckingham Palace. There's also the option to add a ticket for the London Eye on this package.
A connecting service between either art institution, the Tate to Tate Boat runs every 40 minutes. Aside from getting you from one gallery to another, it’s also great for taking in lots of central London scenery. As you might expect, the boat itself is an arty affair: YBA Damien Hirst covered both the exterior and interior with his trademark spots. It’s also genuinely the quickest way to travel from Tate to Tate – this way, you avoid an irritatingly convoluted tube or bus journey.

Up until the 20th Century, the River Thames was an important part of the economic lifeblood of the city. Barges would travel up the river daily, carrying important supplies such as timber, wool, foodstuffs and livestock. This includes the stone used to rebuild St Paul’s Cathedral after the 1666 Great Fire of London, which was transported by boat along the River Thames from the Cotswolds to London. Following the growth of road transport in the 20th Century, the River Thames became less economically important.

The dress code on most Thames cruises is smart casual attire. However, feel free to dress more formally for any special occasion. Opt for comfortable attire that allows freedom of movement. It's also advisable to dress in layers as London's weather can be quite unpredictable. This way you can add on more layers if the weather gets chilly. Don't forget hats and sunscreen if you are opting for a cruise during the day, especially in the summer.
![riverboat london No Smoking sign](https://cdn-imgix.headout.com/media/images/c98acc1418d2ce25815db5d3127ce561-NoSmoking%20Thames%20River.jpg?auto=format&w=814.9333333333333&h=458.4&q=90&ar=16%3A9&crop=faces)
- Safety first: Life jackets are provided and must be worn if instructed. Crew members will brief you on safety procedures before departure.
- Smoking restrictions: Most cruises have a no-smoking policy indoors, including cabins and enclosed areas. Smoking might be allowed on designated outdoor decks, so check signage.

- Dress for the weather: Pack layers! London's weather is notoriously fickle. A light rain jacket, a scarf, and sunglasses (even in cloudy skies) are your allies. If it's a scorcher, a hat and sunscreen are essential. Opt for comfy shoes – you might be tempted to explore once you disembark.
- Pick your pier on HOHO: Consider your cruise's direction. Greenwich Pier offers a glimpse into maritime history, while Westminster Pier puts you near Big Ben. Research your starting point for nearby restaurants or pubs for a pre-cruise bite.
- Pack like a seasoned traveler: Bring a reusable water bottle and a tote bag. Plastic is a foe on the Thames! Pack snacks if you're on a longer cruise, but don't forget – most cruises offer food and drinks for purchase. Cameras are a must, and binoculars add an extra layer of swashbuckling fun!
- Capture the golden hour: For stunning worthy for the ‘gram photos, go for sunset cruises, when the sky explodes with vibrant colors.

NEW LONDON — A man was arrested Thursday afternoon following a dramatic chase that ended in the Thames River, the New London Police Department reported.
The incident began around 1:11 p.m. when a woman called 911 from Riverside Park to report an assault by a man later identified as Richard Kaczmarczyk, 59, with no certain address in New London.
Upon police arrival, Kaczmarczyk fled the scene.
Officers, aided by police K9 Zeke, pursued the suspect on foot toward the train tracks, prompting a temporary halt to Amtrak train operations.
Kaczmarczyk then entered the Thames River, swimming to a construction barge in an attempt to evade capture.
After over an hour clinging to a mooring line, Kaczmarczyk was surrounded by marine units from Waterford PD, Groton Town PD, Groton City PD, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Kaczmarczyk faces multiple charges, including interfering with police, third-degree assault, and second-degree breach of peace, in connection with the incident.
He was also wanted on eight active arrest warrants, including failure to appear, probation violation, and a protective order violation, which was not related to the assault.
His total bonds amounted to $150,000.
Both Kaczmarczyk and the female victim were transported to L+M Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The New London Police Department is actively investigating the incident and encourages witnesses or those with information to contact them at 860-447-5269, ext. 0, or to submit anonymous tips through the New London Tips 411 system.

NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) – A suspect wanted for assault disrupted train service and swam into the Thames River before he was taken into custody, according to New London police.
Authorities said 59-year-old Richard Kaczmarczyk of New London was arrested. He was wanted on eight active arrest warrants.
Kaczmarczyk was charged with interfering with police, assault third-degree, breach of peace second-degree, two counts of failure to appear first-degree, four counts of failure to appear second-degree, violation of probation, violation of a protective order, and harassment second-degree.
A woman called 911 around 1 p.m. Thursday to report she was assaulted by Kaczmarczyk, police said. He fled the scene before police arrived.
New London officers, including K9 Zeke, later located Kaczmarczyk.
Officers called Amtrak to temporarily halt train operations because Kaczmarczyk ran toward the train tracks.
“Kaczmarczyk fled into the Thames River in an attempt to elude officers and swam towards a nearby construction barge,” New London police said. “Kaczmarczyk was subsequently surrounded by several mutual aid law enforcement marine units (Waterford PD, Groton Town PD, Groton City PD and the United States Coast Guard).”
Police said Kaczmarczyk held onto a mooring line for more than an hour before surrendering to police. He was taken into custody and brought to the hospital for treatment.
The female victim was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Kaczmarczyk was held on a total of $150,000 in bonds.
“Today’s incident was not a domestic violence related incident – the aforementioned protective order violation was a result of one of the active arrest warrants,” said New London police.
Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call the New London Police Department at 860-447-5269, Ext. 0 or anonymous information can be submitted via the New London Tips 411 system.

Park Hyatt London River Thames now accepting reservations
![riverboat london Cameron Sperance](https://thepointsguy.com/_next/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fthepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net%2Fus%2Foriginals%2F2023%2F06%2FCam-photo.jpg&w=3840&q=75)
Just in time for the fall and holiday travel season, one of the most anticipated hotels in London is almost ready to open its doors.
According to the hotel website, Park Hyatt London River Thames is open for reservations from Oct. 1 onward. However, available rooms didn't appear until the beginning of November during TPG's quest for a booking. Either way, this is great news for World of Hyatt fans planning a trip to London.
The 203-room hotel, originally slated to open in 2022, is part of the broader One Nine Elms development (a mixed-use skyscraper project currently being constructed) along the Thames waterfront, just east of Battersea and west of Vauxhall. Park Hyatt London River Thames, one of TPG's most anticipated hotel openings this year, is well connected to the rest of the city thanks to the brand-new Nine Elms station on the Northern line extension — meaning you can roll out of bed and have a sausage roll at The Ginger Pig in Borough Market in less than 30 minutes.
World of Hyatt members looking to burn points at the hotel should know the new Park Hyatt is a Category 7 property, meaning award nights range from 25,000 points to 35,000 points per night. Of course, those who've achieved Globalist status can redeem their free night award certificate (applicable on Category 1 through 7 hotels) when staying here.
Guests looking to check in to the Park Hyatt London River Thames can expect a mix of brightly decorated, luxe guest rooms with city or river views. Those who want to splurge can opt for one of the Park Hyatt's suites, which range from spacious rooms with river views to the 1,851-square-foot presidential suite, which has private elevator access and butler service.
After all, what's the point of going to London if you can't live like a royal?

Man Flees From Police In River, Disrupts Train Service: New London PD
N EW LONDON, CT — A man accused of assaulting a woman at a New London park Thursday afternoon tried to flee from officers by jumping into the Thames River and refusing to exit the water, according to police.
In a news release, Police Capt. Matthew Galante said officers received a call around 1 p.m. from a woman who reported she had been assaulted by a man at Riverside Park.
The woman also provided a description of the man, later identified as Richard Kaczmarczyk, 59, of New London, who fled from the area when officers arrived, Galante said.
When Kaczmarczyk spotted officers, including a police K9, he fled on foot toward nearby train tracks, which required police to contact Amtrak and have the company temporarily cease train operations, Galante said.
Kaczmarczyk then tried to elude officers by fleeing into the Thames River and swimming toward a nearby construction barge, Galante said.
Several mutual aid law enforcement marine units from Waterford, Groton and the U.S. Coast Guard subsequently surrounded Kaczmarczyk, however he refused to exit the water, Galante said.
After holding onto a mooring line for over an hour, Kaczmarczyk eventually surrendered to officers and was arrested without further incident. He was then taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to Galante.
The woman was also transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Galante said
In addition to facing charges for Thursday's incident, officers found Kaczmarczyk was wanted on eight active arrest warrants, according to Galante.
Kaczmarczyk was charged with interfering with police, third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace, second-degree harassment, violation of probation, violation of a protective order, two counts of first-degree failure to appear and four counts of second-degree failure to appear.
Galante also noted Thursday's incident was not domestic violence-related, as the protective order charge was the result of one of Kaczmarczyk's active arrest warrants.
Anyone who may have witnessed or has information about this incident is encouraged to contact the New London Police Department at 860-447-5269 (ext. 0). Anonymous information can be submitted via the New London Tips 411 system.
