In 2009 she was sailed to the Netherlands and since then she has received new paint (Awlgrip H8002) including hull, mast and boom, new North 3DL sails (main, genoa and staysail) and new Raymarine electronics. TC 56 series For Sale

The Truly Classic 56 is a charming yacht concept that is equally suited to family cruising and bluewater expeditions. There have been four TC 56's have been built so far: Lady Ann (ex Evangelyne) at McMullen & Wing in 1998, Little Dragon (ex Belphegor), also in 1998 at Holland Jachtbouw, Princess of Tides at Aluboot in 1999 and Corian in 2001 by Holland Jachtbouw.  While being the smallest boat available with an aft deckhouse, the deckhouse is large enough to accommodate a navigation station and settee. The rest of the interior volume is similarly optimised, with an intimate open plan salon, two guest cabins aft and a choice between one owners' suite and two guest cabins forward. All this is coupled with an excellent performance, the parameters of which depends upon the keel size and sail plan. Although the Truly Classic 56 is not a lightweight boat, she performs exceptionally well in both light and heavy airs.

If you needed the kick start of summer to get your into sailing gear, its finally here, along with the arrival of some remarkable classic yachts on the market. If you’ve been looking for a ‘ yacht for sale’ sign, look no further…

TEXEL: Yacht for sale, fit for a king (or duke)

Marinas in the Med are full of smart-looking yachts which are used as holiday homes by their wealthy owners and which, if they ever leave harbour, never stretch an ounce of canvas. No6 Texel (above) is not one of these, says Nic Compton . Although until recently owned by an Italian count, this former Dutch pilot schooner has been restored as a fully-functioning long-distance cruising yacht, capable of crossing oceans (she’s been across the Atlantic at least four times) as well as being fitted with all the amenities of a comfortable family holiday home. For someone looking for a historic vessel with authentic pedigree capable of some serious sailing, she represents a fabulous opportunity.

Built at the Piet Smit shipyard in Rotterdam in 1921, No6 Texel was one of 37 loodsschoeners (ie pilot schooners) which served on the north coast of the Netherlands, taking pilots out to incoming ships and collecting them from outward bound ones. Much like the Bristol Channel pilot cutters, but mostly built of steel (of course). At 92ft (28m) long, No6 was one of the biggest loodsschoeners and operated for 12 years, firstly around the island of Texel, at the mouth of the Zuiderzee, and later around the Hook of Holland.

Her life took an unexpected turn when she was bought by American cotton millionaire George McFadden in 1933. McFadden was a keen archaeologist and had the yacht converted into a comfortable home (complete with repurposed panelling from a 16 th century crypt) while he worked on sites in the Eastern Mediterranean. During the Second World War, the renamed Samothrace was briefly chartered by the Office of Strategic Studies (the precursor of the CIA), transferring supplies and personnel from Alexandria to Cyprus.

McFadden sold the yacht to King Farouk I of Egypt in 1947, and for a short time after his exile in 1952, the deposed king lived on board the again-renamed Feid el Bihar (Lord of the Seas) in Italy. She then went through a string of owners and names, before ending up moored at the quayside in Porto Santo Stefano, painted white (“like Moby Dick!”), where Andrea Doná dalle Rosa – an Italian count who can trace his family lineage back to three Venetian doges – spotted her. 

Andrea wasn’t interested in sitting in a marina and had the boat completely rebuilt by the Atollvic Shipyard in Spain, including a new interior designed by Gerard Dijkstra, complete with creature comforts such as air conditioning, water makers, modern galley, etc. He also returned her to her original gaff rig, painted her hull black, and renamed her No6 Texel. The result was a comfortable and seaworthy cruising yacht which stays true to her original design while being fit for the 21 st century. Andrea died in 2022, but the boat has been maintained in top condition ever since.

ZINNIA: A yacht for sale, to Sail the World

“Designed by Nigel Irens and Ed Burnett and built by Elephant Boatyard and Frank Kemp” are the sort of words that speak of a yacht of great standing, and Zinnia lives up to that expectation, as one of the best regarded yachts of her type; not that she is really of a type. She’s a 30ft (9.1m) gaff cutter, heavily built to the modern wood-epoxy method in 1998, with 11 laminated ring frames obviating the need for any structural bulkheads. There’s some workboat style in Zinnia in the transom-hung rudder, gaff rig, straight-laid deck and tiller steering, but the gaff rig is a modern expression of the type, with a high-aspect ratio and the ability to hang more canvas than a plank-on-frame equivalent. And the interior and finish, with much bronze deck ware in evidence, prove that she’s very much a yacht.

Zinnia was built engineless for her first owners, who completed an Atlantic circuit in her. A 20hp Beta was installed in 2003 and Zinnia cruised England’s south coast until 2018 when she was sold to an owner in Maine, USA, where she’s been cruising since, occasionally taking in a regatta . She’s been professionally maintained and well wintered, enjoying the sensible – essential for these waters in the case of the holding tank and radar – upgrades to her equipment listed below. Transom hung rudder and tiller steering. She sleeps four in two cabins, and thanks to the deliberately thick deck and coach roof construction, specifically designed to prevent the penetration of tropical heat, she’s cool and comfortable and insulated.
