Junior Deckhand

About the junior deckhand.

A junior deckhand is an entry level position that requires little to no experience on board luxury yachts, however, some experience with boats or watersports expertise is extremely valuable. What this crew member lacks in experience, they can make up for with a can-do attitude and being a strong team player. In this position, it is necessary to work closely with the senior deck officer, be a quick learner, and able to follow instructions thoroughly in a detailed manner.

Job Responsibilities

• Cleanliness of the yacht wash downs, stainless polishing, waxing
• Assisting bosun and mate in maintenance projects; sanding and taping up for varnishing or painting, caulking, filling
• Continued learning of yacht maintenance, operations and systems; line handling, tender driving, navigation, safety, water sports

The Junior Steward (ess) is under the management of the senior interior crew. The role consists of cleaning and maintaining the appearance and upkeep of the interior of the boat, both guest and crew areas. Furthermore, providing Guest turn-up, turndown service, laundry, ironing, stain removal, fabric care. Food and beverage service, depending on the vessel fine dining or silver service maybe required, bar tending, barista, flower arranging and plant care. Assisting the Chief stewardess with other duties such as provisioning of guest and crew items such as toiletries, towels and linens, logging inventory.

Salary range

EUR 2000 to EUR 2500 Per Month

Qualifications, training and skills required

• Basic STCW 95 & PSA
• A background in hospitality, bar tending, barista, floristry, housekeeping, wine knowledge or previous work in hotels, ski chalets or private houses would be advantageous
• Enthusiasm and willingness to learn
• Good administration and computer skills
• Immaculately presented
• Good attitude
• Willingness to assist in other departments when required

• Take extra training such as one of the PYA Guest courses although this is NOT mandatory.

We are looking for a rotational Tender Engineer to join a 70m private motor yacht. The ideal candidate will be accomplished with tender maintenance and engineering and be comfortable working independently as well as part of the wider engineering team. It would suit someone with some experience as a Tender Engineer on board yachts, or someone with extensive shoreside experience working with tenders and tender maintenance. Deckhand/Carpenter 100m+ Private Motor Yacht

We are looking for a Deckhand/Carpenter for a 90m+ Private M/Y Rotation: 5/1 Start: ASAP Salary: DOE The ideal candidate will come from a shipyard, boatbuilder/shipwright or cabinet maker with yacht experience. Lead Deckhand/Bosun- private 60m

Seeking a energetic, experienced Bosun for a beautiful, private 60m M/Y in the MED. MUST have large tender driving skills of at least a 45ft or larger. Yacht Master is preferred Solid 2+ years experience in the industry.

The ideal candidate will have solid deck skills in place and be fully confident driving a tender of at least 45ft+. Experience with water toys/sports are required. Vessel will cruise the Med for the season before heading into the Monaco yacht show.

Vessel will consider someone for the season, but preference is for fulltime.

A tech company that posted a 'whites only' job ad was ordered to pay $7.5K and give staff better training

• Virginia tech services firm Arthur Grand posted a job ad seeking only white, US-born candidates.
• The Justice Department found the ad violated the Immigration and Nationality Act.
• The company must now pay a $7,500 fine and implement training to comply with federal laws.

The US Department of Justice has fined a Virginia-based tech company $7,500 after it posted a discriminatory job listing in March 2023 seeking only white candidates.

The DOJ secured the agreements with Arthur Grand Technologies Inc., an information technology services firm, earlier this month. The company is also required to give its employees comprehensive training on the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The job ad said it was after "only US-born citizens [white] who are local within 60 miles from Dallas, TX."

The ad quickly spread on social media, drawing widespread criticism.

The Justice Department said that the advertisement deterred qualified individuals, including US citizens born outside the US and non-US citizens, from applying.

Investigations by the Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, or OFCCP, found that a recruiter from the company's Indian subsidiary posted the job ad on Indeed.

Arthur Grand apologized and said that an employee added discriminatory language to the listing and published it without authorization.

"At Arthur Grand, we do not condone or engage in any type of discrimination based on race, color, or religion," the company said on LinkedIn .

It added: "We conducted an investigation and discovered that a new junior recruiter at our firm was responsible for the offending job posting. We have taken immediate action and terminated their employment for violating our policy."

The Justice Department determined that the ad violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by excluding eligible candidates based on citizenship status and national origin. 

The Department of Labor also found that the job posting breached Executive Order 11246, which prohibits federal contractors from discriminating in employment decisions based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division called the incident "shameful."

As part of its settlement with the Justice Department , Arthur Grand will pay the US Treasury a civil penalty of $7,500 and implement comprehensive training for its staff on INA compliance.

The settlement also requires the company to revise its employment policies, which will be subject to ongoing monitoring.

The agreement with the Labor Department requires that Arthur Grand compensate individuals who filed complaints with the OFCCP.

"We are committed to holding federal contractors accountable for outrageous discriminatory practices like this advertisement," said Acting Director Michele Hodge of the OFCCP, per the DOJ.

Racial bias still plays a part in job hiring in the US.

Last month, Business Insider reported on a study that showed CVs with Black-sounding names are less likely to get callbacks.

AI tools are increasingly being integrated into hiring processes and were initially touted as a means to reduce bias. But AI is not exempt from echoing human racial bias.

OpenAI's ChatGPT over-selected Asian women candidates and under-selected Black men in a recent experiment, Bloomberg reported .

OpenAI told Bloomberg that recruiters can add their own safeguards against bias, such as stripping names from the screening process.

Arthur Grand didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Requirements Gathering and Analysis

• Gather, analyze, and communicate business requirements for the supply chain transformation initiative, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of stakeholder needs. By accurately developing requirements, we can ensure alignment between business objectives and technical solutions, leading to improved project efficiency and reduced rework.

Project Liaison and Collaboration

• Serve as a liaison between business stakeholders and extended project teams, fostering clear communication and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle. Effective communication and collaboration are essential for ensuring that project deliverables meet stakeholder expectations and business objectives, and it minimizes misunderstandings and promotes timely decision making.

Testing Support and Quality Assurance

• Develop test scenarios and scripts and participate in quality assurance activities to ensure that delivered solutions meet business requirements and quality standards. Rigorous testing is crucial for identifying and resolving defects early in the development lifecycle, minimizing project risks and ensuring high-quality deliverables.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience
• 3 years’ practical experience in requirements elicitation, documentation, and analysis.
• Fluency in English.
• Familiarity with industry best practices and standards related to business analysis.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex business needs into actionable requirements.
• Experience working in a global organization, with knowledge of cultural differences.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Familiarity with software testing methodologies and tools and experience in creating and executing test scenarios/scripts.

Deckhand's main responsibility is the maintenance of the exterior of the yacht, including the following:

• Cleaning, polishing, sanding, painting and varnishing of all exterior surfaces on the yacht.
• Inspection and basic maintenance of all deck hardware, portholes, hatches and equipment.
• Line and sail handling and repair.
• Driving and maintenance of all yacht's tenders/toys.
• Assisting guests with toys and on excursions.
• Assisting other crew members as and when required, e.g. food deliveries, event setup, etc.

Small yachts have usually a single Deckhand. Large yachts have 4 or more Deckhands on-board.

European Union criticizes Russia for removing Estonian buoys, demand an explanation from Moscow

BRUSSELS (AP) — The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says the removal of 25 Estonian buoys by Russian border guards on a river separating the Baltic country from Russia was “unacceptable.” Early Thursday, Estonian border guards noticed that their Russian counterparts had removed the floats that Estonia had installed on the Narva River to prevent boats from accidentally crossing the border. Borrell on Friday demanded an explanation and said that the incident “is part of a broader pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia, including on its maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region.”  Estonia also dubbed Moscow’s action unacceptable but said its response “remains calm and clear-eyed.”
