tanna 47 catamaran

Launched at Cannes Yachting Festival in Sept. 2021, the TANNA 47 had its US Premiere in Miami in February 2022.

As tradition wants it, this Fountaine Pajot catamaran is of course named after an island. Tanna is the name of a beautiful Pacific island in the Vanuatu archipelago.

So many improvements that Saona 47 became Tanna 47

First of all let's review what properties made the Saona 47 a big success in the Fountaine Pajot catamarans sailing range  and remained important characteristics of the new Tanna 47:

  • Saona 47 Emblematic reversed bows for better performance, a dynamic look with a pyramid-shape hull.
  • Relaxation areas all over the boat.
  • Integrated platform.
  • Fully integrated plancha hich soon became a standard on board catamarans this size.
  • One of the largest Master cabins for catamarans this size, with 3 main areas: sleeping area with Queen size bed, laundry area with a lot of storage, and spacious bathroom with separate head.
  • Quintet version very popular by charter companies, as catamarans this size hardly ever offered this possibility.

The R&D team at Fountaine Pajot took into consideration the feedback from owners, and worked hard in order to improve the boat.

So what's new on the Tanna 47?

Larger & even more convivial flybridge .

The flybridge seating area is 40% larger than the Saona's, with a total seating area of 7m², and  welcomes at least 10 people .

More renewable energy available

You now have the option of fully integrated solar panels , with either 1.700 Watts or 800 Watts.

Improved helm station & fittings

Like on all Fountaine Pajor sailing catamarans, the helm station is located between the flybridge and the cockpit, and allows easy circulation and communication, as well as great visibility and easy manoeuvering. The autopilot is now located on the right hand side of the helm for easier access.

The fittings have been carefully reviewed and now include Lewmar ball bearing blocks as standard and also Lewmar mainsail travellers .  Genoa tracks are much longer , nearly twice as long.

A bigger, brighter and more ergonomic saloon

The seating area is even more user-friendly , with usb port for your electronic device, and more storage under the sofa.

The sliding door between the outside cockpit and the saloon got even larger with 2 meter opening . That is 20% larger than the Saona, consequently adding more brightness and visibility inside the saloon.

You will fid even more space and storage in the open galley , with the large fridge drawers now located next to the sofa. The oven now has a more practical opening, with lots of space before. The new configuration makes it easier to circulate throughout the saloon.

The chart table is now transferred to the entrance, right after the sliding doors. This allows very fast and easy access, and all necessary instruments are conveniently mounted at eye-level.

Sailboat Review: Island Bound on the Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

  • By Herb McCormick
  • September 26, 2023

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 catamaran

To say that French shipyard Fountaine Pajot has a long and varied history is to traffic in understatement. Founded in 1976 by a quartet that included Olympic sailor Jean-François Fountaine and offshore racer Yves Pajot, the company initially specialized in racing dinghies and IOR-rule monohulls. It later delved into large, record-setting transoceanic catamarans and trimarans. It wasn’t until 1983 that the yard pivoted to cruising cats, beginning with the Louisiana 37. In the four decades since, Fountaine Pajot has produced more than three dozen models, many named after the destinations or islands that inspired them: the Tobago 35, the Saba 50, the Eleuthera 60 and so on.

Which brings us to model year 2023, and the US introduction of Fountaine Pajot’s Tanna 47. Named for a South Pacific island in the Vanuatu chain, the 46-foot cat earned top honors as the Best Cruising Multihull in one of the stronger classes of the 2023 Boat of the Year contest. I served on the judging panel, and I have to say, the Tanna 47 is probably my favorite boat in the entire FP line. It’s structurally sound, fairly techy and good-looking, and it sails very well.

Nowadays, the naval-architecture office of Jean Berret and Olivier Racoupeau—the team responsible for designing the Tanna—seems to be everywhere, but has a long connection with Fountaine Pajot, having designed the Marquises 53 way back in 1991. The Tanna replaces another Berret-Racoupeau collaboration, the Saona 47, which had a production run of 150 boats. On the Tanna, there are plumb bows that max out the waterline, a pair of windows in each hull, a nifty wraparound coachroof window, and a raised helm to starboard topped with its own Bimini. The aesthetics are clean and crisp. A big upgrade from the Saona is the expanded lounge area on the flybridge with a sundeck and a settee (a signature Fountaine Pajot feature). There’s also an inviting sun pad on the main deck just abaft the trampolines.

Another positive aspect cited in our Boat of the Year deliberations was the versatility of the two available accommodations plans. The Quintet layout, with five double staterooms and five heads, is optimized for charter or a growing family. The other layout, called the Maestro, zeroes in on private ownership with a large owner’s stateroom that includes a vanity, desk and en suite head in the port hull. Two double-berth guest staterooms have their own heads in the starboard quarters.

The central saloon is the same in both versions, with the highlight being the commercial-grade U-shaped galley to port adjacent to the cockpit’s sliding doors. An efficient and dedicated navigation station is to port, within a few short steps to the raised wheel. The couch and lounging area in the main cabin is sumptuous and welcoming. So too is the dining and seating arrangement in the cockpit; covered by the flybridge, it’s an all-weather space for kicking back or entertaining.

The resin-infused construction employs a balsa core for a relatively light but solid structure. The standard engine package is a pair of 50 hp Volvo Penta diesels with saildrives, but our test model had the upgraded 60 hp options. At 2,700 rpm opened up, the boat made a solid 9 knots, which was the second-fastest ride in the entire Boat of the Year fleet.

Another notable feature is the array of flat, flexible Solibian solar panels that are essentially glued to the cabin top. On our test boat, they produced 1,700 watts of electricity—enough to run the primary systems (electronics, fridge, air conditioning) all day long. Fountaine Pajot is serious about addressing environmental concerns in the marine sector, and recently announced the formation of its ODSea Lab and initiative, a platform meant to accelerate technological progress with regard to materials, renewable energy, and electric propulsion. The goal is net-carbon-neutral boatbuilding by 2030, with all-electric models as an auxiliary option across the brand.

Happily, we had just about ideal conditions to conduct a test sail, with 13 to 15 knots of solid breeze coursing across Chesapeake Bay. The Tanna’s primary power source under sail is a traditional, generous, roachy full-battened mainsail, augmented by a high-cut and slightly overlapping jib. Upwind, the boat achieved a tidy 6.5 knots, which ratcheted up to a solid 7 knots once cracked off to a reach. The steering was smooth and even, and driving the big cat was a lot of fun.

Cat designers have given a lot of thought to sailhandling systems, with separation between the helm and the winches and clutches often being a high priority. I like the Tanna’s setup: a dedicated pod forward of the helm with all the controls, including a set of Lewmar electric winches, ready and at hand. The visibility, of both the seaway and the sail plan, is terrific. For shorthanded sailing, punch the autopilot and step into the pod to make adjustments. It’s simple and elegant at the same time. So, there you have it. The Tanna 47 isn’t just named for that slice of Pacific paradise; it actually has the chops to get you there.

TANNA 47 - COMFORT, PERFORMANCE & EASE OF HANDLING

The Tanna 47 is perfectly capable of getting going in light airs but will really reveal the qualities of her hulls in a good breeze and moderate sea.

The manufacturer offers an optional Hydranet sail wardrobe better suited to intensive cruising than the standard Dacron fitted to our test model.

This forward view shows the compromise between the fineness of the hulls, the bridgedeck clearance and the internal volume - a job skillfully done by Berret/Racoupeau Yacht Design.

The dining area extends toward the center with a comfortable seating. Note the overhead windows that allow you to keep an eye on the sail plan.

The window over the L-shaped galley opens up by 39” (1 m), so it blends into the cockpit.

The Tanna 47 was unveiled at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, replacing the Saona 47, whose main characteristics she takes over. More modern and accomplished than her predecessor that had appeared four years earlier, the Tanna features improved circulation inside the nacelle, an optimized flybridge, and up to 1,700 W of solar panels. A multihull designed to go all the way…

Test location: La Rochelle, France Conditions: Easterly 5 knots, calm sea

Does the Tanna 47 remind you of the Saona 47? That’s normal, as the molds remain the same and the shipyard has even continued with the same hull numbering – the model we tested was hull #177. In a way, you could call it a Saona 47 Evolution, rather than a completely new model. That said, the accommodation and flybridge have undergone significant changes. In the design of this Tanna 47, which is still perfectly integrated in Fountaine Pajot’s current range of sailing catamarans (the Saona 47 already had inverted bows, which was not the case on the Lucia 40), you can count on a robust and proven construction: the deck and the hulls deck are made using a process of infusion of polyester resin and anti-osmotic resin on cores of balsa and PET foam. The bimini is made using the RTM (resin transfer molding) process on PET foam, while the structural bulkheads are made of balsa sandwich or PET foam) by infusion. As for the two keels, they are attached and glued into a well that’s made of composite. In the event of a violent grounding, this assembly prevents the hull bottoms from being ripped out and the ensuing ing...
