Five People Rescued From a Sinking Yacht
Five people are lucky to be alive after their yacht hit a reef in rough seas off the coast at Jurien Bay in Western Australia.
The four-hour rescue operation to save the five sailors in the sinking boat, saw two children transported by the RAC rescue helicopter to Perth’s Children’s Hospital, where a teenager was treated for a possible broken leg.
An 11-year-old had drifted away from the group after the crash she was found shortly after and was fortunately wearing a life jacket.
Taking to twitter Jurien Bay Police thanked the “professional and volunteer boating community, along with air assets who searched for five people that had been washed overboard.”
“After searching for (approximately) four hours, all five were located and being treated in hospital,” they said.

Men rescued clinging to esky after boat sinks off Garden Island
Four men forced to spend 30 minutes in the ocean when their boat sank off WA’s coast on Sunday may have lost their beers but they kept their sense of humour.
Emergency crews were called to reports a boat was taking on water and sinking about 300m off Garden Island just after 7am.

Water Police arrived about 15 minutes later and found the boat had indeed sunk, with only its bow visible above the water line, and its four occupants in the ocean.
Bodycam footage captured during the rescue showed two men being helped from the sea before the remaining two were found clinging to a green ice cooler.
Despite having to tread water for about half an hour before all four were rescued, their humour was still intact.
“Oh no, the other Esky’s got beers in it,” one rescued man said.
“That one’s just ice and bloody bait.”
None of the four were seriously injured during their scary stint in the water, WA Police said.
Their sunken vessel was towed back to shore.

Three people found dead, two survive after fishing boat capsizes near Port Lincoln
Three people are now confirmed to have died after a fishing boat with five people onboard capsized near Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula late on Monday afternoon.
At 6:30am on Tuesday, police found a body in the water, then another at 9am, before a third was discovered at 2:15pm.
The boat overturned overnight around Spilsby Island, 45 kilometres east of Port Lincoln in the Spencer Gulf.
Two survivors — a 44-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy, both from the Adelaide suburb of Torrens Park — were found on a reef and winched to safety in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The surviving pair were taken to hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries including hypothermia.
Police were told by the pair that the boat was capsized by a wave at about 4pm on Monday.
Family raised the alarm at about 8:30pm on Monday when the boat failed to return from a fishing trip that morning.
Superintendent Paul Bahr said investigations into the circumstances that surrounded the incident would continue.
"They were fishing near Spilsby Island when they were swamped by a wave, overturning the boat and throwing everyone into the water," Superintendent Bahr said.
"We're still talking to the survivors, so we're still trying to put that picture together in terms of how they ended up on the reef away from the boat."
He said a police helicopter located the upturned fishing boat at about 2am on Tuesday.
"The boat itself has also been recovered and it's making its way back to Port Lincoln and that will be offloaded later today," he said.
"It will be subject to further forensic examination and also any examination the coroner may require."
Aerial and ocean searches underway on Tuesday have now concluded.
In a statement, SAPOL said it will prepare a report for the coroner.

WA yacht race tragedy: two men dead after the Finistere capsizes
Yacht race ends in double-tragedy.
Two local sailors are dead and several others deeply traumatised after a well-known WA yacht overturned in windy seas off Mandurah.
Police were last night still trying to piece together what happened to Finistere, a three-time Sydney to Hobart offshore cruiser owned and skippered by popular yachtsman and Fremantle Sailing Club Vice Commodore Rob Thomas, late on Friday.
The Davidson 50, which took part in the annual Bunbury and Return Ocean Race that started six hours earlier off Fremantle, was a regular participant in the Geographe Bay Race Week and the Geraldton Ocean Classic and has sailed around Australia.
It is believed Finistere’s crew of six were experienced sailors. It is also understood the vessel’s keel separated from the hull, which caused it to turn over quickly.

Police are expected to release the names of the dead sometime tomorrow after formal identification and relatives are informed. They are in their 60s and 70s.
The drama began when one of the crew let off their distress beacon just before midnight as the yacht — one of a small fleet heading south — was about 11 nautical miles south-west of Mandurah.
The signal was picked up by the Australian Marine Safety Authority in Canberra, which then unsuccessfully attempted to contact the boat via radio.
When Finistere’s tracker failed to update itself 15 minutes later, AMSA then contacted Fremantle Water Police and the RAC Rescue helicopter, which was fortuitously conducting training exercises in the area.
It arrived on the scene within 30 minutes.
It found Finistere upside down and semi-submerged.
Two other yachts taking part in the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club-hosted event, Huckleberry and Fourth Dimension, were diverted to the scene and arrived a short time later and between the two boats, five of the six crew were dragged aboard. It is understood a female crew member was trapped inside at the time it capsized but she was rescued.
Four surviving sailors were not seriously hurt, one of the men who was dragged on to one of the two rescue yachts was dead. A sixth crew member could not be found at the time.
Police began a major search at first light today covering a 233sqkm area 40km south-west of Mandurah.
AMSA co-ordinated the search using two RAC Rescue helicopters, the department of Fire and Emergency Services Dauphin helicopter staffed with air observers from Melville and Bassendean State Emergency Service.
Fremantle Water Police, Mandurah, Rockingham and Bunbury Volunteer Marine Rescue crews and two yachts from the race, Fourth Dimension and Circa, took part in today’s search. At 12.30pm, a second man’s body was found floating in the search area.
RFBYC Commodore Dean McAullay said it was too early to speculate about how Finistere overturned. He said it was a Category 3 race, meaning all the sailors had personal beacons on them that would set off a signal when they hit the water.
By the rules, they should have been wearing life jackets and been tethered to the yacht.
“Offshore sailing is inherently risky, anything on the ocean can be unexpected,” Mr McAullay said.
“So as to a serious incident like this, it’s something that we don’t expect. We have our plans in place to be able to manage these things as best we can and we look to learn from these things to make it better for the future.”
The club cancelled today’s scheduled sailing as a mark of respect to the dead sailors and their families.
Police were late today still taking statements from the survivors and others involved in their rescue.

Three men wearing life jackets in the water as they hold onto a floating esky
Three men rescued near albany from deep sea after boat sinks off eclipse island.
Three men have been rescued from their sinking boat in the ocean off Albany on Wednesday, with one of the survivors praising the efforts of their rescuers.
Police received a report of an overturned boat at 9.40am after an EPIRB activation.
There were three people onboard the vessel who were retrieved by Albany Sea Rescue and brought back to the Emu Point boat ramp about 12.40pm where St John WA and police were waiting.

Albany Sea Rescue operations co-ordinator Chris Johns said the men had been fishing overnight when they got into trouble this morning.
Mr Johns said the men were in a “combined sea of about 4m” and were in a “very, very, very perilous position”.
“Roughly about 10.30am we got a call from water police to say there was an EPIRB going off, an unregistered EPIRB,” Mr Johns said.
“However, it’s still a wonderful EPIRB with 406 (satellite) capability.
An inflatable life raft was dropped to the men from an Australian Maritime Safety Authority plane, after they were alerted to the EPIRB signal at 8.16am.
Mr Johns said by the time Albany Sea Rescue got to the men they were on the life raft, but their boat, was “almost upright” with “only the little point poking out” of the water.
Mr Johns said he believed the men, visitors to the area, had spent about two hours in the water.
A St John WA spokesman confirmed a man in his 40s was taken to Albany Health Campus for observation but all three had escaped serious injury.
The other two men were thankful to be rescued as they made it back to dry land at the boat ramp but admitted they were “embarrassed” about the incident.
They said the boat had only just been purchased in Perth, and they had come down to fish in Albany as the previous owner had logged several fishing spots off the south coast in the boat’s GPS system.
One of the survivors, who asked not to be named, said he would be making a donation to Albany Sea Rescue to say thank you for rescuing them.
“They pretty much spotted us and they were there right on us in no time,” he said.
“They’ve done a good job, we’re all home, we’re all alive.”
On Wednesday afternoon AMSA released a video of the men, wearing life jackets in the water as they held onto a floating esky and waved the EPIRB, before they were rescued.
Mr Johns said the men owed their lives to their EPIRB.
“If they didn’t have that, they would be in very serious trouble,” he said.
“One of the guys has gone to the hospital.
“If we waited for the call we just got from one of their friends to say they were overdue, it’d be another two hours before anyone knew, and the boat may have even sunk by then.”
