Owner Review: Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622

What's it like to wear the rolex yacht-master.

Before we get to my Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 review, we need some background. In 1992 Rolex introduced a watch that shared the silhouette of their beloved Submariner but in solid 18k yellow gold, embossed YG bezel insert soldered to the bezel, funky white dial, and the unusual name “Yacht-Master” written where “Submariner” would normally live. People then and now still wonder.. “Why?”.

Rumor has it Rolex wanted to drastically update the Submariner but were scared that the changes were too extreme. The Submariner was essentially their poster child and arguably their most iconic watch. Fearing backlash, they created a whole new line. Rolex rarely creates completely new watches, the last time they made a new watch before the Rolex Yacht-Master was in 1964 when the Daytona was introduced. Luckily it paid off as the Yacht-Master was pretty well received!

Even though the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 at first glance looks very similar to the Submariner it’s a totally different wearing experience. The case shape is completely different from the Sub. Its case profile is composed of compound curves with the lugs swooping downwards very similar to a Daytona, the case is also fully polished. My particular Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 being Roleisum (Rolex’s term for the combination of Platinum and Steel which was first introduced in 1999 with the ref. 16622), in combination with the blue sunburst dial and red accents, gives it such a unique aesthetic it sets it apart in Rolex’s catalog. Rolex I think perfected their blue dials, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Pictures do not do it justice whatsoever. In person, it appears much darker, almost black however in direct light that’s when the striking blue hue pops. The date function is also very convenient!

What is it like to wear a Rolex Yacht-Master? I would describe it as the most comfortable and stressful watch I have ever worn and owned. What most people don’t realize is that it’s a thin watch and I mean THIN. At 11.5mm it’s just as thin or even thinner than a 34mm 114200 Air-King! Like what? The case hugs your wrist amazingly while the oyster bracelet seems to caress you. It makes you want to wear it every single day, I mean how could you not? Thin, sporty, beautiful, comfortable and low key a strap monster. Until you see a scratch or nick on the solid Platinum bezel insert, call up Rolex Service Center to see how much it would be to replace it and they slap you in the face with a $2500 (before taxes) quote for JUST the bezel/bezel insert assembly (they’re soldered together remember?). Then you think “Okay, okay which Seiko ’s do I sell to cover the cost of a freaking bezel”. Did I mention the case is fully polished?

Has this ever happened to me? No, because I’m extremely OCD, however I was curious and called RSC, I also used to own the 16622 and was trained to wear long sleeves only, only wear it sparingly, cover my wrist when walking through doorways, never let it touch denim (yes, denim will scratch it apparently), and for all I know never sneeze near it or even look at it too long because for all I know that could probably scratch it too. To top it all off, of COURSE the bracelet and clasp has Polished Center Links! While I am exaggerating the fragility of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the stress of potentially scuffing it is real.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 is arguably one of my favorite watches ever made. I never thought I’d ever get to own one. It’s beautiful, ridiculously comfortable, relatively uncommon, however so stressful to wear. I have owned it for almost exactly one year and I personally try to enjoy every second I wear it; I even strap changed it with zero scuffs! I have and I do but my OCD and extreme caution lends itself to be a difficult one to fully appreciate without worry. I’ve debated if this watch was right for me all the time. However, I would recommend this watch to anyone minutely interested. I have no regrets having owned two of them like an insane person, but who in the watch collecting world isn’t insane?

The fervid speculation over what Rolex would announce at Watches & Wonders—now an annual ritual amongst the global watch community—is finally at an end.

Had the rumor, rife among the brand’s global army of online pundits, that the famously secretive manufacturer would discontinue or update the Air King proved correct? Might a reimagined version of its anti-magnetic Milgauss, or possibly a tweaked Coke GMT be in the offing? Perhaps even more color dabbling with those Datejust dials?

Find out below: and should any of the new watches strike your fancy, those who have established a deep relationship (probably involving significant annual investment) with their local authorized dealer will have a greater chance of acquiring one. Rolex has been largely sold out at retail in the last year. And looking at the new additions to the canon, we wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case this year, too.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King

Rolex brought the Air-King back in 2016 after a short hiatus—and speculation about when it would get another update has been rife ever since.

Today we got our answer. The 2022 iteration of the Air-King has a more legible and “harmoniously balanced” dial, the manufacture says, due to the addition of a “0” before the “5” on the minutes scale, which puts double digits between each five-minute interval. An optimized Chromalight display, meanwhile, also bolsters readability in darker conditions, as does the addition of a new luminescent material on the hands and triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock

Elsewhere, a crown guard and straight sides bolster the piece’s imperious charm, while the bracelet’s proportions have been tweaked, its center link broadened and an Oysterlock safety clasp added for the first time.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

Another Rolex piece that celebrates airborne antics, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II—which is designed to show the time in two time zones simultaneously—has traditionally been a hit among Robb Report readers.

In the 2022 update, the crown and crown guard have been placed on the left side of the case while the date aperture and the Cyclops lens now nestle beside them at 9 o’clock, changes which meant tricky technical tweaks in terms of the movement and the Superlative Chronometer certification.

We have a new color pairing: the usual Oystersteel case and bracelet juxtaposing nicely with a  green and black monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in ceramic—the first time these colors have been combined for a Rolex GMT. It’s the nearest we got to that new Coke prediction.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40

An eye-catching (and light-catching) new addition to the line sees a new fluted bezel surrounding its ice blue dial, made from the same material, platinum, as seen elsewhere on the piece (traditionally Rolex has only produced these in 18k gold).

Fluting platinum, a material known for its exceptional luminosity, was no stroll in the park: it involved, in fact, the development of an innovative new manufacturing process.

This may well be the easiest-on-the-eye Day-Date since it became the first calendar wristwatch to indicate the day of the week—and spell the day in full—in 1956.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42

Yacht-Master aficionados who actually use them in a nautical context can, for the first time, take to the seas in one created in yellow gold as well as white gold, created and cast at the brand’s foundry in Geneva.

Like the original model, the new version includes a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a Cerachrom insert with a raised graduation, not to mention the innovative Oysterflex bracelet. Like the new Air-King, the new Oyster Perpetual also benefits from the legibility-boosting optimized Chromalight display and the manufacture’s newly developed luminescent material.

Wrist-feel, Watches & Wonders attendees today will no doubt assert, has been enhanced by the Oysterflex bracelet on this new version, which boasts the patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp to prevent accidental opening.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40

The aurora borealis and the chromatic dance nature performs on the horizon at dawn are what, according to Rolex, inspired the bezel of this new Yacht-Master edition, studded with trapeze-cut diamonds and sapphires in blue, silver and pink. A definite glow-up for a watch that launched in 1992 with skippers in mind.

The sparkling effect is enhanced further by 46 brilliant-cut diamonds running from the lugs to the crown guard and a triangular diamond at 12 o’clock.

Like the larger Yacht-Master also introduced today, it also has Rolex’s new Oysterflex bracelet and folding safety clasp improving wearability.

Rolex is unveiling a new colourful, sparkling version of the Yacht-Master 40. Cast from 18 ct white gold – a first for the model – the watch features a rotatable bezel set with trapeze-cut precious stones. Pink sapphire, light-blue sapphire, diamond, purple sapphire and dark-blue sapphire: a harmonious sequence of five hues.

Unveiled in Gold at Watches & Wonders 2022: The Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Premiered in 1992, the Yacht-Master then, as now, is Rolex’s vision of a nautical watch. The last addition was introduced in 2019 in a new 42mm white gold case. The fleet is now joined by a yellow gold execution.

The new version, like the original model, is distinguished by a bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matte black ceramic. Its raised graduations and numerals are molded into the ceramic and then polished. The crucial first 15 minutes are graduated individually to allow time intervals to be read with great precision.

The dial benefits from an optimized Chromalight display. The hour markers and hands are filled or coated with a new luminescent material that guarantees a longer-lasting intense glow. In daylight, these elements also have a brighter white hue. The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 sets sail in a 42mm Oyster case that is water-resistant to 100 meters. Its middle part is crafted from a solid block of 18k yellow gold. 

Inside ticks the self-winding caliber 3235 that was introduced in 2015. It features all the noble elements, fans of the brand appreciate, such as the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability, and the highly shock resistant blue Parachrom hairspring. It goes without saying that the movement bears the Superlative Chronometer certification defined by Rolex in 2015 in addition to a C.O.S.C. chronometer certificate.

The new 18k yellow gold Yacht-Master 42 is fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. Developed by Rolex, it is made up of flexible, curved metal blades over-molded with high-performance black elastomer, a material that is particularly resistant to environmental effects and very durable.

The Oysterflex bracelet comes with a Oysterlock folding safety clasp in 18k yellow gold and the Rolex Glidelock extension system that allows to adjust the length up to 15 mm without the use of any tools.

The new Yacht-Master 42 retails for $28,300.

OYSTER PERPETUAL YACHT-MASTER 40

Rolex is unveiling a new colourful, sparking version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40. Cast from 18 ct white gold – a first for the model – the watch features a rotatable bezel set with trapeze-cut precious stones. Pink sapphire, light blue sapphire, diamond, purple sapphire and dark blue sapphire: a harmonious sequence that is repeated eight times. This design gives the bezel a unique sparkle that is further enhanced by a triangular diamond at 12 o’clock. The case shines with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds from the lugs to the crown guard.

THE SPIRIT OF THE OPEN SEAS

Launched in 1992, the Yacht-Master was designed specifically for navigators and skippers. Embodying the rich heritage that has bound Rolex and the world of sailing since the 1950s, this Professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style. An emblematic nautical timepiece, it is easily recognized by its bidirectional rotatable bezel, which, when not gem-set, either features a 60-minute graduation and is made entirely from precious metal or is fitted with a Cerachrom insert in technical ceramic.

The Yacht-Master 40 professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style.

THE OYSTER CASE  

The 40 mm Oyster case of the new Yacht-Master 40 is a paragon of robustness and reliability. Its middle case is crafted from a solid block of 18 ct white gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which is fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the watch’s movement.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3235  

The new version of the Yacht-Master 40 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since 2019. At the forefront of watchmaking technology, this self-winding mechanical movement led to the filing of several patents, and offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability. 

Calibre 3235 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with an optimized blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The blue Parachrom hairspring is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. 

Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours.

OYSTERFLEX BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP  

The new 18 ct white gold Yacht-Master 40 is fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet, which singularly combines the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap. Developed by Rolex and patented, this innovative bracelet is made up of flexible, curved metal blades overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer, a material that is particularly resistant to environmental effects and very durable. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with longitudinal cushions. 

The Oysterflex bracelet on this new version of the Yacht-Master 40 is equipped with the Rolex-designed, patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp in 18 ct white gold, which prevents accidental opening. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, which was designed by the brand and patented. This particularly inventive mechanism comprises a rack located under the clasp cover and a toothed sliding link that locks into the chosen notch. The Rolex Glidelock on the Oysterflex bracelet has six notches of approximately 2.5 mm, allowing the length of the bracelet to be adjusted easily, and without tools, up to some 15 mm.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION  

Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. 

The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. “Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!
