Are you considering sailing in Greece for your next vacation? Renting a sailing boat in Greece is one of the best ways to explore the beauty of the Greek islands. With approximately 220 inhabited islands and 6,000 uninhabited islets boasting hidden beaches, impressive coves and caves, and endless marine wildlife, Greece is a sailor’s paradise. Renting a sailing boat in Greece presents the following advantages:
- You can anchor wherever you please, and explore any island or village at your own pace, free from worries about transportation, ferry schedules, accommodation arrangements, and tour coordination.
- Within just a few hours of sailing, you can easily reach a different Greek island, avoiding the bustling summer crowds and relishing the experience exclusively with your group of friends.
- Moreover, sailing in Greece can be very cost-effective if you consider how steep the prices of ferry tickets are.

Sailing in Greece: The Yachting Numbers
There are more than 6.000 professional pleasure crafts in Greece, ranging from inflatable boats to mega-yachts. Notably, there are 350 mega-yachts (more than 24 meters in length), out of a global population of 8,500, making Greece a prominent destination for luxury yacht enthusiasts . The country hosts 35 marinas and is home to 83 boat-building companies.
The chartering season extends from April to November, with the peak period occurring between June and September.
Sailing in Greece: Type of Vessels
The Greek chartering market offers a wide array of vessels, with the primary distinction being between sailing boats and motorboats. An essential consideration is whether the vessel is chartered bare, assuming the client holds the required license, or with the necessary crew.
Furthermore, there’s a diverse range of sizes available. Options span from two-cabin, 30-foot sailing boats to impressive 300-foot mega yachts. In between, there are 40-70 foot motor yachts, as well as the versatile hybrid category of motor sailers.
1. Sailing Boats
A sailing charter boat, though relatively slower and with limited space, offers an unparalleled experience of cruising. It provides the unique sensation of gliding through the water without the hum of an engine, only the soothing sounds of the wind in the sails and the water flowing around the hull. This type of vessel allows passengers to actively participate in its handling, making it an ideal choice for groups who enjoy physical activity and are environmentally conscious about their carbon footprint.
While sailing boats primarily rely on the wind, they are equipped with small engines for situations where there is no wind or much time to wait for the wind to blow. If you are not an experienced sailor , boats can be hired with a skipper (see “Other Practical Information” below for minimum qualifications to hire a bare sailing boat).
2. Catamaran Sailing Yachts
A catamaran is a double-hull boat that offers a roomier living space and thus, more comfort on board. Due to their two hulls, they do not yaw making for smoother sailing with minimal heeling. This stability allows for the ease of performing everyday activities, such as cooking, while under sail.
Moreover, it has a lower draught allowing it to sail in shallower waters or anchor closer to the shore. Finally, it may be safer due to the duplication of the motor and the rudder (one per hull).
On the flip side, catamarans tend to be pricier both in terms of purchase and charter costs. Their wider beam also translates to higher docking expenses. Regarding sailing, a catamaran will drift more easily, due to its lower draught. This requires swift anchoring especially if winds blow from the side.
3. Motor Yachts
A motor yacht provides greater speed, allowing you to cover more significant distances in a day without relying on the wind. Additionally, it offers a bit more space, making it well-suited for sunbathing, and often comes with a protected cockpit for rainy days.
However, it’s worth noting that motor yachts may not be suitable for use in rough seas, defined as conditions exceeding 6 Beaufort. Due to their power and speed, motor yachts are typically chartered with a captain.
4. Motor Sailers
Motor sailers are a hybrid of a sailing boat and a motor yacht. They have sails but they are bulkier and roomier than a pure sailing boat, they therefore also rely on their engine.
5. Mega Yachts
This category represents the essence of yachting luxury. Officially, it includes yachts that are more than 24 meters long. In the chartering market, however, one can find vessels exceeding 100 meters in length, accompanied by crews ranging from 10-15 people for vessels accommodating up to 12 passengers to more than 30 people crews for those designed for larger guest capacities. Yachts of this magnitude must comply with the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
How Much does Sailing in Greece cost?
Chartering prices greatly vary, mainly according to the period of the year and the type of yacht, (size, age, condition, equipment). Here are some indicative starting prices :
- (36”) sailing yacht (w/out skipper): €300/day or €1.500 /week
- (38”) catamaran sailing yacht (w/out skipper): €2.750 /week
- Motor Yacht (w/ skipper): €1.500/day
- Skipper: €150-180/day
- Hostess: €110-150/day
Essentials for Chartering a Yacht in Greece
Number of persons.
It’s crucial to choose travel companions with whom you’re confident your friendship can withstand the closeness of confined spaces. A yachting vacation serves as a test for friendships. Consider individuals who share a compatible travel style and communication, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable sailing experience for everyone on board.
The idea is you all have a blast cruising the seas without driving each other crazy!
Sailing in Greece: When is the Best Season?
Peak season in Greece runs from June to September, with warm or even hot air and perfect sea temperatures for swimming. Keep in mind that late July to mid-August can get pretty windy in the Aegean. While the weather stays fine until early October, from September (or sometimes even late August), there might be some rain, particularly in the more humid Ionian Sea as opposed to the drier Aegean.
Make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecasts, adjusting your plans as needed for a smooth sailing experience.
Type of Vessel
Choosing the right yacht for your Greek adventure is a matter of personal preference. If you’re into the thrill of sports and the excitement of the sea, or if you’re seeking a more relaxed and leisurely experience, the type of yacht matters. Your familiarity with nautical activities and your ecological concerns also play a role in making the best choice.
When it comes to size, consider your budget and the number of companions on your journey.
With or Without Crew
In most cases, motor yachts come with a captain , and for larger vessels, additional crew members may be included. Depending on the yacht’s size, you might have the option to add a cook and/or hostess for extra convenience. On the other hand, sailing boats are commonly chartered bare , especially by experienced sailors who prefer to take control. However, if you’re not an expert sailor, you can always request a skipper for a smoother sailing experience
For larger sailing boats, having a second crew member can be beneficial, and they might also take on the role of a cook or hostess. Opting for a skipper ensures a seamless sailing holiday . Beyond commanding the vessel and understanding local sea conditions, the skipper handles all communications with ports, marinas, and suppliers.
However, it’s essential to note that the skipper’s presence may slightly compromise your privacy onboard.
Duration of the Trip
Sailing boats are typically chartered on a weekly basis, starting on Saturday although charterers may offer more flexible arrangements. Motorboats can be hired on a daily basis.
Sailing the Greek Islands
The Greek seas boast various sailing areas, each with its unique characteristics and charm.
The Cyclades are the most internationally known destination in Greece thanks to the reputation of Mykonos and Santorini. All islands share the same iconic whitewashed houses, arid landscapes, golden sand beaches, and crystalline blue waters.
Cyclades islands are known for the windy conditions, particularly the ‘meltemi’ winds, prevalent from June to August, peaking between mid-July and mid-August. Navigating these waters demands strong sailing skills and experience.
The Dodecanese are the warmer sailing destination with moderate winds, allowing sailing during the shoulder months (April-May, October-November) when the winds are calmer. It also offers proximity to popular destinations on the Turkish shore like Bodrum.
Sailing in Greece and in particular the Ionian Sea, in the western part of the country, offers a different scenery with green islands and blue-emerald waters. Prevailing NW winds are mild and the sea is calm. This makes the area the perfect destination for the less experienced sailors.
The North Sporades islands, located on the Northwest side of the Aegean Sea are a chain of 6 islands three of which, the easternmost ones, are non-inhabited and are an important shelter for the Mediterranean seal. The westernmost ones offer rich vegetation and beautiful beaches. The prevailing wind is usually N – NW. Moderate to good sailing skills and experience are required in this area.
The Saronic and Argolic Gulfs (Argo-Saronic) present three advantages, in addition to its islands: Ease of access as it is close to Athens, proximity to the archaeological sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae , and calmer sea as the area is somehow covered by the north. It is, therefore, along with the Ionian Sea a good pick for sailors with moderate experience.
Sailing in Greece and Children
If there will be children on board, please inform the charterer so that appropriate life vests can be provided, along with the possibility of a safety net below the vessel’s rail for added security.
Typically, the boat comes with a policy that covers the client against responsibilities concerning third parties, marine pollution, and significant damages to the boat. However, it’s essential to note that the personal injuries of the clients are not covered. Therefore, potential clients should review the coverage provided by their insurance policies and consider purchasing additional insurance, if necessary.
Renting a Sailing Boat in Greece
The minimum qualification to hire a bareboat sailing yacht is either two sailing licenses or at least one sailing license and one declaration of sailing experience for the co-skipper. In the latter case, the co-skipper will sign such a declaration of sailing experience upon embarkation.
Sailing licenses can be issued by various entities, including the government of origin, sailing clubs, sailing schools, yachting and sailing associations, as well as established charter companies.
Marinas in Greece
Marinas are quite cheap in Greece. They may cost from 5-15 € per day plus expenses on the water and electricity. On the other hand, there are not many marinas but there are many commercial ports as well as small ports in fishing villages. Places in ports are free, however, one cannot reserve them in advance.
Docking at commercial ports may be a bit challenging due to the maneuvering of liners, especially if they arrive at night. The typical berthing approach is stern-to, while berthing alongside is less common, particularly during the busy high season. Opting for bows-to berthing (generally feasible) offers more privacy.
How to Charter a Boat in Greece
Feel free to submit your request here , and we’ll promptly send you an offer from reputable charterers. If you have any general questions, don’t hesitate to reach out as well . Keep in mind that making a reservation sooner increases the variety of available vessels that can better match your preferences and needs.
Practical Tips for Sailing in Greece
- Pack light when sailing, there’s nowhere to store big suitcases so choose a small backpack and, if you need to, leave extra luggage behind in storage.
- Learn Local Navigation Rules: Familiarize yourself with local navigation rules and regulations to avoid any legal issues.
- Ensure you have essential emergency equipment on board, such as life jackets, a first aid kit, and a throwable lifebuoy.
- Have reliable communication tools on board, including a VHF radio, and know the emergency channels.
- You will be spending a lot of time traveling on board (with stops for swimming and lunch breaks) so be prepared if you get seasick. Stock up on anti-nausea medications or use seasick bracelets. Stay above deck and keep your eye on the horizon line. Being below deck (usually) makes seasickness worse.
- If you are on the front part of the boat you may get sprayed which you may find fun or you may not. If not, you better sit in the back of the boat.
- The Wi-Fi access will probably be limited. Bring a book with you (or two).
- Dispose of waste properly, respect marine life, and follow eco-friendly practices to preserve the beauty of the Greek Islands.
Packing List for Sailing in Greece
- Starting from your luggage you should rather get a waterproof duffel bag than a large, hard suitcase . Remember, storage room may be limited .
- This is an opportunity to invest in a good underwater camera like GoPro 12 or Olympus TG-6 . Bring along rechargeable batteries for your phones, laptops, and cameras.
- Cover-ups for the constant sun on the boat are your best friends!
- A lot of sunscreen lotion for the body, face, and lips . Salt will make your lips very dry.
- Dry bags for mobile and any other electronics on board.
- The light sea breeze feels wonderful on your skin but the sun will burn you if you are not covered or protected with strong UV, a couple of good sunglasses, and a hat.

Popular Sub-Regions in Greece
Mykonos yacht charters.
Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.
Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .
Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters
A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.
Santorini Yacht Charters
A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.
Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.
Hydra Yacht Charters
Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.
Milos Yacht Charters
The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.
The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

The Corinth Canal : a long stretch of water that cuts through the mainland in Corinth.
Flyaway Creative : the hottest restaurant in Santorini.
Who Goes on a Greece Yacht Charter?
Given its staggering popularity, a better question might be: who doesn't? For culture vultures, Greece is packed with majestic archeological ruins and attractions, for sun-worshippers, Greece is home to some of the world's most outstanding beaches that can be enjoyed by couples and families alike, and for hedonists, party havens like Mykonos are buzzing with famous nightclubs and bars.
History and Culture
Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.
Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.
Types of Yacht Charters in Greece
Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.
However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a yacht charter broker for more information.
If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.
Motor Yacht Charters in Greece
For those looking to rent a motor yacht in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.
The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.
You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.
Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece
Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.
The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.
Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece
A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht. Luxury gulet yacht charters in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.
Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day. Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.
But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.
How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?
The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.
- A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
- A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses
In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.
The three tax brackets are as follows;
- VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
- VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
- Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.
When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?
The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.
Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.
Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?
By far the most common embarkation point for a Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.
However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.
It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.
If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos – you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.
Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece
Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.
- Zea Marina: located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
- Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
- Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
- Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
- Rhodes Marina: world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.
Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter
Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.
How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece
Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.
When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.
Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.
That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A
Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.
A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.
You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.
The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.
The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.
The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

PrivatSea manages some of the world’s most famous mega yachts and has been a pioneer in this field since the 1970s.
Since the very beginning, PrivatSea has worked tirelessly to uphold its core values throughout every service: providing a transparent, professional service with every detail accounted for.
As part of the Latsis Group of Companies, PrivatSea leverages an extensive network to offer our clients the highest-quality products and services at competitive prices. With a 360° approach, we offer our clients complete services under one roof from yacht management to project management with a trusted yacht shipyard at hand. As experts in the field and a trusted partner, we tailor bespoke services to fulfil our clients’ needs in-house so they can enjoy their yachts to their maximum potential.
From Trade and Shipping to the Birth of the Yacht Management Company
The Latsis group was founded in Greece in the 1940s by the late John S. Latsis. John S. Latsis’ first entrepreneurial ventures focused on trade and shipping and quickly expanded to diverse business interests such as commercial shipping, energy and real estate.
In 1949, John S. Latsis, then a young Captain himself, purchased the Laurana to service the small islands around Athens. The vessel was also enjoyed by family and friends, entertained on short cruises.
Inspired by the joy seen amongst his loved ones on these voyages, John S. Latsis established the chartering company Alcyonides and routed the vessel on the Agrosaronic Gulf Line. Shortly after her first voyage in the line, she was renamed Neraida , meaning “fairy” in Greek, after a vote was held on board with the presence of politicians and journalists and the soon-to-be Prime Minister of the country, Nikolaos Plastiras.
Neraida carried passengers almost every day of her career, hosting politicians and celebrities and appearing in Greek and foreign films until 1974 when she retired from service. Her most frequent route was Piraeus – Aegina – Methana – Poros – Hydra – Hermioni – Spetses, but she also used to visit Leonidion, Monemvasia, Salamina, Nafplion, and Epidaurus. But that would not be the end for Neraida, find out how her legacy lives on in The Neraida Floating Museum.
The Neraida Floating Museum & Legacy of John S Latsis
After Neraida retired in 1974, she remained laid-up at a Latsis-owned shipyard in Elefsis, Attica, until 2007; John S. Latsis refused to send his lucky ship for scrap. Following John S. Latsis’ death in 2003, his family launched an ambitious project to assemble an archive of his life and work. In 2007, the decision was made to convert the vessel into a floating museum showcasing part of this collection. On 9 September of the same year, she was loaded onto the Maria, a heavy cargo vessel, for the voyage to Sibenik in Croatia, where a three-year refit took place. Finally, in April 2010, the vessel returned under her own steam to Elefsis.
On February 6, 1963, the newly established Yacht Charter Company Alcyonides sent personal letters to companies and entrepreneurs in Athens and abroad promoting a new and unique kind of luxury vacation: sailing on a private charter yacht.
Alcyonides managed five classic wooden yachts, built in and around the Greek islands and the Mediterranean. Each vessel was constructed in the old and classic Greek shipbuilding tradition in Perama, Athens. The wooden boats boasted Rolls-Royce engines and reached speeds of 10 knots, all held Lloyds certificates, and could accommodate up to 12 passengers.
In 1977, the acquisition of Henriette – a 53-meter yacht built in 1949 – signalled the entrance of the company into the pleasure yacht industry. Gradually, the company became involved in yacht management , conversions, yacht refits , operations, charter and brokerage.
The 58 MY Henriette was designed by the New York-based Naval Architect and Marine Consultant John Wells (1879-1962). She was built by welding shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia and was launched in 1950. At the time, the yacht represented the pinnacle of American Shipbuilding and was the finest example of the true craftsmanship that characterized the yachts of her era. In 1977, the yacht was brought by the late John S. Latsis and her acquisition signalled the transition of the Latsis Group into the yacht management business.
Sete Yacht Management was established in 1998 and was followed by PrivatSea in 2004.

A message from our Chairman, Mr Xenakis
“As the numbers of mega yacht owners grow, so does their need for movement, connectivity, simplicity and opulence, all manageable through customised services and discretion. And what better way to fulfil all the above needs than being onboard their yacht, equipped like a state-of-the-art company headquarters, while offering services of a seven-star hotel? I would easily guess that the need for floating headquarters in the form of super yachts will multiply in the coming years, reinventing the way of conducting business while being on the move. And we will be waiting to assist.”

Greece Superyacht Hotspots

The seas of Greece were made to be explored by yacht. Its intricate shorelines hide undeniable beauty behind every turn, with shady pine trees reflected off glassy, turquoise waters and powdery sands hugging each coast.
Hundreds of miles of undeveloped, virgin coastlines mean that intimacy and natural seclusion are integral parts of Greece’s charm. The Eastern Mediterranean’s mild climate favours yachting and sailing all year round and offers warm temperatures and brilliant sunlight even during the autumn months, amid the total safety which the seas of Greece are known for. Sweeping, cloudless skies await, with a refreshing summer breeze permeating each of the hundreds of quaint islands and uninhabited islets to be discovered. Secure waters and the element of privacy set the ideal scene for a yachting experience beyond compare.
Worldwide fame has not marred the beloved traditional character of Santorini; its uniquely amphitheatrical towns, like the beloved Oia, are gems of authenticity and breathtaking beauty. This is one of the best places on the planet to sail through the sunset or approach the mythical caldera by yacht.
This well-known Cycladic island is coveted worldwide, and for good reason! Moor your yacht or sailboat in the New Port to discover the whitewashed alleyways studded with boutique shops and high-end restaurants; an unmistakable cosmopolitan aura abounds here. The characteristic 16th-century windmills are an intriguing cultural landmark and point to its fascinating history.
Sculpted by the sea over many millennia, the coastline of Milos is filled with natural rock formations that simply beg to be admired. Inspiration abounds here; this is where the world-renowned Venus de Milo was found, as well as several other poignant sculptures which now grace some of the world’s most highly visited museums. Many of its most radiant shores are only reachable by sea, like Kleftiko on its southern coast, so this is the ideal place for a sailing or yachting trip; Sarakiniko Beach is a definite must-see for anyone visiting Milos, for its spectacular views.
The Saronic Gulf simply wouldn’t be the same without Hydra! Only an hour away from Athens, this perfect break from the city features stunning Venetian mansions and traditional monasteries, as well as superb pebbly beaches. Dock your yacht near its picturesque port to enjoy old-world, cosmopolitan vibes; whilst in Hydra, consider also visiting the alluring Poros and Spetses on a relaxing day trip.
Brimming with personality, Kos is a stunning member of the Dodecanese island group studded with palms and filled with stories of a vibrant past. Its shady and cool Plaka Forest is inhabited by peacocks, making it the perfect place for a nature stroll. Kos is also where you should break out your diving gear, with intriguing shipwrecks and bustling marine life to peruse on an undersea excursion. Also, sail to Kastri islet for a getaway to a destination of traditions and rugged, untouched beauty.
Majestic city walls are an unmistakeable Rhodes landmark, and are best admired when approaching the island by yacht. This gorgeous capital of the Dodecanese has been dubbed “The island of the Knights” because it was conquered during medieval times and turned into a thriving cosmopolitan centre; now, the Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site which should absolutely be explored.
The Sporades are most easily discovered with the charming Skiathos as a home base! Small distances between islands mean that the captivating Skopelos and Skyros are some of the best destinations to tour by yacht or sailboat; however, be sure not to miss the picturesque Skiathos Port as it’s well known for its charming houses and lovely harbour.
This stunning member of the Sporades is characterised by its lush orchards and olive groves; it also hosts an array of wildlife at its National Marine Park, which is home to the Mediterranean monk seal, as well as dolphins and rare seabirds, and is surrounded with islets that are best explored by yacht. Its postcard-perfect Votsi Bay and Agios Dimitrios Beach are known for offering wonderful sea and sun as well as peaceful seclusion.
The crown jewel of the Ionian Sea, Corfu is as cultural as it gets when it comes to the Greek islands! Its intriguing history has offered it some truly stunning architectural gems which display Venetian, English and French influences, including the Achillion Palace which was built for the Empress of Austria in 1890. Its beaches are surrounded by viridescent forestry and perfect for approaching by yacht or sailboat.
The oasis of the Ionian Sea, Lefkada is a verdant paradise, characterised by beaches that are more easily approached by yacht due to the steep ocher-toned cliffs which they are enveloped by. Porto Katsiki and Egremni are two such coves which are complete must-visits for their crystal clear waters and pale sands. Lefkada is particularly well known for its picturesque, traditional villages; a perfect example of this is Nydri, easily approachable by yacht as it is situated on the island’s lush coastline.
Odysseus spent ten years trying to reach this island, and we can tell why! This tiny Ionian haven sparked the notion of “nostos”, a literary term which has coloured the lives of Greeks and the entire world. With a population of a little over 3,000 inhabitants, explore this island’s idyllic coastline by yacht in a single afternoon as the sunset colours its crystalline waters.
Paxos & Antipaxos
Among the 20 most beautiful islands in the world, Paxos has been renowned throughout history for its mythical allure and rugged, natural scenery, including the Blue Caves of Paxos on its west coast. Its capital, Gaios, looks as perfect as a postcard; but rather than whiling the days and nights away in its quaint seaside cafes, take a yachting tour to Antipaxos to discover the gorgeous Voutoumi Beach.

Yachting areas in Greece
The sailing regions of Greece are divided into the Ionian Sea, Saronic Gulf, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Sporades islands in the Aegean Sea. The sea around Greece is dotted with over 2,000 islands, making it a perfect spot for sailing. The most popular destinations are the islands of Corfu, Lefkada , Ithaca, Cephalonia and Zakynthos.
Thanks to its sheltered waters, the Ionian Sea and the area of the Saronic Gulf are ideal for a relaxing family holiday with children or friends. The Aegean Sea offers more challenging yachting conditions and is particularly suitable for experienced sailors. The Sporades and the Dodecanese offer a combination of both.
The Cyclades form a rough circle (”kyklos” in Greek) around the island of Delos. The Cyclades include 30 larger islands and around 190 islets. Each island is a great holiday destination in itself for romantic couples, groups of friends or families. The most popular islands in Greece are generally Santorini and Mykonos , while other frequented islands include Paros, Naxos, Ios, and Sifnos.
North Ionian Sea
As is common in Greece, the islands are highly diverse in nature with each holding its own individual charm. Corfu is evergreen and varied, the facing mainland coastline beckons with its picturesque harbours and sandy beaches, and the small islands of Paxos and Antipaxos offer turquoise seas, romantic rocky bays and small historic harbours. Short distances between islands guarantee effortless sailing which is just as easy as it is in Croatia.
South Ionian Sea
This part of the Ionian Sea is broader and more spread out than the north. The area between the islands and mainland creates an inner sea, well protected from the western winds and waves, making it ideal for novice sailors and for family trips. The island of Ithaca is rugged and hilly. Zakynthos is known for its mountain villages, secluded monasteries and captivating views. Cephalonia is the largest of the islands and is home to the Ainos National Park and numerous resorts. Lefkada offers everything from mountain villages to seaside resorts. The South Ionian Sea stretches along the Peloponnese coastline all the way to Kythera Island, although it's too far to reach on just a 7-day trip from Lefkada.
Saronic Gulf
The Saronic Gulf is located near Athens and is a very popular destination in the Aegean Sea due to its easy accessibility, historical sights and good sailing conditions. The Meltemi does not blow as hard in the summer here as in the Aegean Sea and the distance between islands is short, making sailing relatively easy. Due to the proximity of Athens, the area is very popular with tourists, but on a sailing yacht you can still find peace on the deserted bays and beaches of the islands and islets.
The Dodecanese
The Dodecanese are a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, located southwest of the Turkish coast. The Dodecanese islands are a popular destination in the summer, especially for experienced sailors because the Meltemi blows quite strongly here. However, in spring and autumn they are also suitable for less experienced sailors. The chain of islands has much to offer. Beautiful beaches, great conditions for surfers and kiters, historic harbour towns, ancient monuments, and small fishing villages where you can avoid the normal tourist rush, even in high season.
The Sporades
The Sporades are located south of Thessaloniki and the Chalkidiki peninsula and comprise of four inhabited islands and several uninhabited islands, all bathed in natural beauty. Skiathos is the centre of fun with its buzzing nightlife, while the islands of Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros are much more tranquil. The uninhabited islands of Kira Panagia, Gioura, and Skantzoura are truly remote and isolated, and as there are no mobile signals here you can completely disconnect from the outside world.

Weather and climate conditions
The Meltemi is often mentioned in Greece. This dry, katabatic wind mostly avoids the Ionian Sea, but fully manifests itself in the Aegean. In the form of a descending wind, it may also threaten the leeward side of the island. Meltemi warnings apply to the islands of Kea, Evia, Tinos, Andros, Folegandros, Kos, Serifos, Amorgos, and Sifnos.
The Meltemi moves completely undisturbed along the wide corridor between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese and is at its most intense in high season when it can reach speeds of over 100 kph. But even the Meltemi winds have their positives. They cool down the relentless summer heat, aid visibility and reduce moisture. In April, May, and June, just as in September and October, a stable and reliable Mistral wind blows in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. During these periods there are no intense Meltemi winds to contend with. By the end of the high season, the sea has warmed to a tropical 28–30°C but it is possible to swim in Greece from as early as May, when sea temperatures are 19–21°C. The average daily peak air temperature on Naxos rises from 19 °C in April to 27 °C in July and August. By October the temperature has dropped to 22 °C.

Greek gastronomy.
The Mediterranean climate allows for numerous crops to be cultivated, making Greeks particularly partial to fresh ingredients. Their aromatic dishes use wild herbs, such as rosemary, dill, cumin, curry, basil, parsley, mint and nutmeg.
Olive oil is the most characteristic and indeed oldest ingredient, which you will find in almost every single dish. Olives themselves are also used in abundance (the most famous being black olives from the town of Kalamata), as are tomatoes, capsicum, aubergine, courgette, onion, potatoes, green beans, and okra (edible hibiscus). Commonly you’ll find a combination of meat and ingredients mostly used in other countries for sweet dishes (such as cinnamon or raisins).
Mezedes is typical when dining in Greece and comprises of a number of small appetizers served with wine. These include various cheeses, loukaniko herb salami, fried chunks of octopus and squid, vegetable salads, or pitta bread with tzatziki or other dips. Desserts are very sweet and made with a thinly layered filo pastry, nuts and honey.
The local diet differs from region to region. Game, especially boar, is popular in the mountainous and wooded northern part of the country whereas seafood is typically consumed on the coast. Typical types of fish on offer are the common sole (a type of flatfish), mackerel and silverside.
The Ionian islands, which were ruled by the Italians for a long time, differ to the rest of Greece in their liking for pasta. Crete excels with its many local specialities (paximadi wholemeal bread and dakos salad prepared as an accompaniment) as does Cypress (halloumi herb cheese or lountza, pork tenderloin marinated in wine and smoked).
There are some excellent drinks to be had in Greece. There are some fine wines and, of course, the Greek national drink ouzo, a traditional anise liquor originally created in Asia Minor from Turkish raki. Another infamous Greek spirit is Metaxa, which is a unique combination of brandy and liqueur. Greek coffee is served at the end of every meal and is made from finely ground coffee beans without filtering.

Greek history is as gripping as it is illuminating and has been documented over a longer period than any other region of Europe. Its roots lay in the ancient Minoan civilisation on the island of Crete which was the first advanced civilisation in Europe. Elaborate palaces were constructed as seats for the rulers with towns developing around them. It was eventually replaced by the Mycenaean civilisation, but the rulers fought frequently with each other and there were significant social differences between cultures. In the end the civilisation was likely invaded by the “Sea Peoples” and then superseded by the Dorian culture. This was followed by a period of decline known as the Greek Dark Ages.
A new boom only began with Greek colonisation and the development of the ancient Greek polis. This period of prosperity gave rise to the ancient Greek culture which became the cornerstone of the entire western civilisation. Greece successfully defended itself against attack from the Persian Achaemenid Empire, but was eventually defeated, mainly due the internal conflict between Sparta and Athens. The Macedonian king, Philip II, used this opportunity to conquer a major part of the land. His son Alexander defeated the Persian empire and made it as far as the area around the Indus River. After Alexander’s death and when Greek and oriental culture became intertwined, the Hellenic period began in Babylon. Greece became a part of the Roman Empire in the 2nd century AD.
Until 2005, divers were only allowed access to 10 % of the total 16,000 km of Greek coastal waters. After changes to legislation, however, diving is now permitted all over Greece. Below you can find information about the most interesting diving spots in Greece.
There are about 90 diving centres throughout Greece. There is top-quality centre on Mykonos, surrounded by an enchanting undersea world. For one dive you will pay EUR 60, including equipment rental, a guide and boat transport. A package of five dives will cost you EUR 250.
Caves near the island of Tragonisi
This diving spot, situated southeast of the island of Mykonos, is a true gem. Jump into the sky-blue abyss below and the amazing rock formations, massive caves, and shoals of translucent fish and anemones will take your breath away. It is not unusual here to encounter one of the Mediterranean monk seals that live nearby.
Wreck of the HMHS Britannic
Almost one hundred years after it sank, you can dive down to the sister ship of the Titanic itself. It lies on the seabed near the island of Kea, and seeing it is truly out of this world. Discovered in 1975 by the maritime legend Jacques Cousteau, this was the largest ship sunk during World War One. This is a very challenging dive.
Island of Chios
This can be found a mere 7 km from the Turkish border. Head for the Great Wall for an experience full of wonder. Below the surface, you'll find everything from shipwrecks, to shoals of multicoloured fish, right through to huge rock massifs. The Great Wall itself measures around 30 m and is covered in colourful corals. You will be in the company of tuna, sea bream, and sea bass, and even a few sea turtles may even join the party.
Diving in Greece is subject to seven rules:
- Underwater activity is performed only from dawn to dusk.
- The use and possession of equipment to search for historical items is strictly forbidden.
- Photography, the removal of, or the raising of any historical item is forbidden, and each find must be reported immediately.
- Underwater fishing with scuba equipment is forbidden.
- The establishment and operation of diving schools is subject to a special licence.
- No scientific or professional work on the seabed may be conducted without the approval of the Ministry of Culture and Science.
- All divers must respect the above rules and comply with law 5351/32.
What is the difference between yachting in Greece and yachting in Croatia?
In Greece, the yachting infrastructure is nowhere near as developed as in Croatia. You rarely come across yachting marinas. The people you encounter here are friendly though, and you’ll rarely have to pay for mooring, usually just for electricity and water (if available).
Compared to Croatia, there are not many modern marinas . But if you do find one, it won’t cost you the earth. It is either free or for a symbolic amount. The same goes for moorings and city ports.
In Greece, the Aegean Sea offers much more demanding yachting than in Croatia.
