Mooloolaba Yacht Club clubhouse opening

A large crowd celebrated on Saturday the rich 56-year-old history of Mooloolaba Yacht Club and its opportunities for growth into the future with the opening of its new clubhouse.

It’s been a long road for the club to reach this point in its journey to establishing a solid base for growth at Mooloolaba Marina.

The MYC commodore, Tanya Kelly, spoke at the opening of the club’s resilience and friendship, it’s spirit of grit and volunteerism, and its “fight against the odds”.

“Whether it is one of our sailors competing hard in a regatta or a fighting for survival, it’s the people who make the club, and that’s the story of Mooloolaba Yacht Club,” she added.

Acknowledging the official opening of the clubhouse with a ribbon cutting ceremony was Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson MP, helped by club co-founder Hayden Kenny and Ms Kelly.

The function attracted a large crowd of current and former club members along with representatives of other Coast sailing clubs, kite foiling, Sailability, Saltwater Veterans, Marina businesses, the Sunshine Coast Council, Australian Sailing and the Mooloolaba Marina.

Ms Kelly was effusive in her thanks to the board of the Marina who worked closely with the club board to make it possible for the MYC to find its home in the marina’s club precinct area.

The club’s new home is located adjacent to the Sailability and Mooloolaba Outrigger site, on the waterside of Mooloolaba Marina.

“Many parts of the building have been built by the members of the MYC” Ms Kelly said. They have created a meeting and social area that will support the club into the future as its membership base builds.

There is no time to rest for the club board and its members. After recently delivering the nationally recognised Mooloolaba Women’s Keelboat Regatta, it has only three weeks to prepare for the 25th Etchells Australasian Championship which is expected to attract over 30 entries from across Australia.

Other programs that will continue to be supported by the club are its offshore races, Discover Sailing for new sailors and the further development of its youth keelboat sailing program.

“We have a steely and optimistic focus on the future; we have big dreams and big ambitions,” Ms Kelly added.

Mooloolaba yacht club reopens.

THE iconic yacht club on Mooloolaba Spit has finally reopened its doors for business.

After a tumultuous battle which ended in the Queensland court system and ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees, many Coast residents worried for the old “Yachtie’s” future. However, the former Mooloolaba Yacht Club, led by an enthusiastic group of Mooloolaba Marina berth owners and local sailors, re-formed as the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club (SCYC) in September, 2006. The SCYC operates its sailing events in affiliation with The Yacht Club out of its old premises on Parkyn Parade. SCYC vice-commodore David Fairfax said the sailing club today was a testament to the hard work of the founding members which fostered and promoted all aspects of boating. “We have many skilled and enthusiastic racing sailors and also cater for the less experienced and cruising sailors,” he said. “This is reflected in the mix of fun-sails and regattas in our sailing program where members and guests can enjoy sharing the experience of ocean racing, then finish the day with a friendly barbecue with other enthusiasts. “Membership has doubled since Jessica Watson came back and our club rooms opened.” David welcomed visitors and prospective members to join them for a great day out on a Sunday Fun Sail, meeting at 10.30am and crewing a member’s boat. To improve your sailing skills, go cruising, crew with other members or simply enjoy the barbecues and social life, the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club could be the place to drop anchor. Newly-appointed general manager of the Yacht Club, Matt Dillon, said its premises would be re-born as a community club from which all water-based organisations could operate. “We will formally support the Mooloolaba Game Fishing Club, dinghy sailors, the SCYC and Sailability – the disabled sailors’ organisation – under our roof,” he said.

The MYC is the premier yachting club on the Sunshine Coast. Now in its 53rd year the club has made strides into turning around the participation levels of sailing on the coast through the introduction of innovative and fun events to complement its ongoing sailing program. 

The club runs weekly offshore and river racing for its members in addition to major state and national regattas. The club offers specialist sailing experiences for women and youth; and offers learn-to-sail program through the Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Program.

A key activity of the club is the development of young sailors from small dinghies into keel boats for the purpose of engaging them with sailing on a long-term basis, enhancing their sailing and social skills whilst having fun and gaining fitness.

Women represent only around 30% of the sailing community worldwide. MYC is proud to offer women the opportunity to hone their skills, growing confidence through the fun and supportive Women's Sailing Skills Development Program.

To support and grow these programs, the club owns four identical, 20-foot keel boats, called Elliott 6s. These boats are the same as those used in a number of clubs around Australia for youth and adult training and were the vessels used in the 2012 London Olympics for the Women's Matchracing event.

The boats are berthed at the Mooloolaba Marina and used on the river which is a wonderful viewing platform and social area which has assisted the club greatly to engage with those that have sailed before and those that want to try sailing, or those who would just like to watch and support the sailors.

The purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds to assist the club in maintaining and growing its member assets – start boat, mark boat, Elliott 6 training boats, and all racing equipment , to keep pace with the growing demand and to ensure it's ability to continue to offer and grow these opportunities for our locals.
