Monaco, a tiny city-state on the French Riviera, has a reputation as the playground of the rich and famous. The streets of Monaco are lined with high-end casinos, high-end retail shops, luxury hotels, and Michelin-starred restaurants, catering to the affluent crowd who come here to indulge themselves. Every year, the prestigious city hosts the Formula One Grand Prix, attracting some of the world’s wealthiest individuals. While it’s perfectly normal to see multi-million dollar superyachts docked alongside the race course for the perfect view, it’s rare to see a classic Ferrari F40 displayed on the deck of one.

People are wondering why there’s a Ferrari F40 on the deck of a yacht in Monaco

Ferrari F40 on the deck of a yacht in Monaco

There will be no shortage of wealth on show at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix .

With superyachts lining the harbor and Champagne parties taking place all over the place, it really is a playground for the rich and famous.

They like to take things to the extreme, too.

It’s not considered proper etiquette flaunting your wealth, but if there’s one place on Earth where you can get away with it, it’s Monaco.

A Ferrari F40 hosted on the deck of a yacht steals the show, though.

Although there were only 1,311 F40s built by Ferrari, they’re a common sight in the sovereign city-state on the French Riviera.

Mind you, this is possibly the first time one has been hosted on the deck of a yacht.

There’s something about rich people wanting to park their cars in unusual places.

You may recall we recently wrote about an insane $48 million villa with its own supercar glass room .

Then there was that McLaren Senna which was hoisted into a $39m penthouse apartment on the 57th floor.

McLaren Senna GTR craned into Melbourne penthouse

As for this Ferrari F40, it has a different future, as putting it on a yacht is all part of a publicity stunt.

To be fair, they couldn’t have picked a better time to put the F40 on the Quinta Essentia, a lavish 180-foot-long yacht that cost in the region of $40 million.

The company behind the publicity stunt is Altr , a luxury online boutique that lets you buy fancy items using cryptocurrency.

It’s joining forces with Car & Car, an Italian dealer, to sell high-end vehicles on the platform.

Chances are, the Ferrari F40 will make an appearance on there, as there’s a dedicated “Cars” section on Altr’s website listed as “Coming Soon”.

It’s a bold stunt hosting a Ferrari on the deck of a yacht, but it’s one that’s likely to pay off, as it’s already got people talking.

The Largest Superyachts in Monaco for the 2022 Grand Prix

By Emily Dawkins

The Monaco Grand Prix is often recognised as one of the most iconic events in the summer calendar; not only for the fans of Formula One and motorsports, but also for the luxurious world of superyachts.

Marking the unofficial start of the yachting charter season, the prominent motorsport event offers the perfect opportunity for the UHNW elite to revel in all things luxury. From a-list events, dazzling car displays and lavish boutiques, the Grand Prix in Monaco has it all.

Not just offering the perfect high-class experience inland, the waters of Monaco present an incredible location to watch the GP races unfold. The legendary Port Hercule provides numerous berths with stern-to-track mooring, allowing those on yachts to watch the action unfold from the comfort of their lounges onboard.

With only one day remaining until the start of the 2022 Monaco GP, we take a look at the largest yachts that have been spotted in Monaco, either berthed in Port Hercule or deeper in the Monégasque bay.

96.6m FAITH

Delivered by Feadship in 2017, 96.6m FAITH is a magnificent example of the meticulous craftsmanship of the Dutch yard. Across five vast decks, FAITH offers numerous indoor and outdoor entertaining and lounge areas: an idyllic spot to watch the races from the water. With exceptional onboard features including a glass-bottomed swimming pool and large beach club, FAITH also provides an excellent retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the GP. Currently listed for charter with Burgess , it is no surprise that this breathtaking superyacht is berthed in Port Hercule.

92.4m TATOOSH

Two legends meet: Nobiskrug’s 92.4m TATOOSH has been spotted in the waters of Monaco. Delivered in 2000 by the German yard, the white superstructure of TATOOSH is recognisable around the world. Featuring several versatile exterior spaces and an array of onboard amenities including a jacuzzi, pool, and a floor that rises to become a dancefloor, TATOOSH fits in perfectly with Monaco’s opulence. Joining the brokerage market in 2021, the 92.4m motor yacht is listed for sale with Burgess .

91.5m QUEEN MIRI

91.5m QUEEN MIRI is the largest yacht to be delivered by Greek shipyard Neorion. Abundant in space, both inside and out, alongside numerous sublime features including a children’s playroom, beauty salon and conference facilities, QUEEN MIRI presents the ultimate yacht for optimal work/life balance. Spotted moored in Port Hercule’s Quai Rainier III, QUEEN MIRI is currently believed to be privately owned.

90m LIONHEART

Launched by Benetti in 2016, 90m LIONHEART remains in her home berth of Port Hercule for the Monaco GP this year. Often spotted cruising the nearby Mediterranean waters, little has been revealed about LIONHEART since her launch, but with an array of comfortable outdoor areas the 90m would undoubtedly offer an exemplary location for watching the GP. She is currently berthed at the end of Quai Rainier Ier.

88.5m CLOUD 9

Moored at Monaco’s deep water anchorage is Oceanco’s 88.5m CLOUD 9. Previously named INFINITY,  the 88.5m was delivered in 2015 by the Dutch shipyard, and was sold by Burgess earlier this year. As one of the largest sales of 2022 so far, CLOUD 9’s appearance in Monaco is the first time she has been seen since her name change. She is now available for charter with Burgess for the first time since her delivery.

Other large superyachts that have been spotted in Port Hercule and Monaco's surrounding waters include:

87.78m FOUNTAINHEAD

86m MAN OF STEEL for charter with Ocean Independence

82.5m SECRET for sale and charter with  Burgess

81.2m GRACE

74.5m LADY E for charter with Burgess

73m CORAL OCEAN

109m BRAVO EUGENIA was recently spotted in Monaco but has since moved to the nearby Port Vauban Antibes, where 91.5m TRANQUILLITY and 97.2m CARINTHIA VII are also berthed.

With the action set to kick off tomorrow with the first F1 free practice sessions, we can’t wait to see what the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix will hold, and what other superyachts will make an appearance in Port Hercule.

The good life: a Ferrari 330 GTC, a yacht, and Monaco

monaco yacht ferrari

How do you picture Monaco in your head? To really capture the feeling of the good life in Monaco, in just one single shot, I think you would need to get at least four things in that pic. A very nice looking car – supercar or classic, a big yacht, the Monaco skyline in the background, and an elegant woman or man wearing designer clothing from head to toe. Something like this.

In Monaco I had the opportunity to join a photo shoot in the Port of Monaco for the Italian Auto Class Magazine with photographer Dave Carletti. Before going down to the port we stopped by RM Autosport to choose a car for the photo shoot, and a stunning red Ferrari 330 GTC was the final choice. I could not take my eyes off the car, what a beauty!

While the guys were working hard I had a chat with the owner of RM Autosport. Raul Marchisio is from Italy, but now lives in Monaco, where he has a nice car dealership. I found out that Raul Marchisio is not only a car collector, but he is also a former Lancia, Audi and Renault rally driver, as he showed me photos of his past rally cars. But the greatest moment was when both of us agreed that Climb Dance on Pikes Peak by Finnish rally driver Ari Vatanen is one of the best car videos in the history.

Once again a reminder that after nice meetings with like-minded people, you will leave with a big smile on your face.

However, I have Finnish rally blood running through my veins. So for me the most perfect photo to do there would in fact have been of a Group B rally car , a wooden Riva , Monaco skyline in the background, and a man in his rally suit. That is more like my idea of the good life . Perhaps a little less expensive, but not much…

Historic, famous and punishing: Breaking down Monaco’s iconic F1 circuit

Monaco is the epitome of Formula One.

The principality is famously known as a playground and a haven, attracting tourists as well as the rich and famous. It may be the world’s second smallest independent state (at 0.76 square miles, it’s barely half the size of New York’s Central Park), but it’s packed with casinos, designer malls and clubs. Each year when the grand prix rolls around, the harbor fills with yachts as fans prepare for the thrill on track and champagne moments afterwards on the podium.

  • Follow live coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend

Monaco’s street track was part of the calendar for F1’s inaugural season in 1950, and it’s kept that place every year since 1955, except for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

The iconic circuit is narrow, requiring pinpoint accuracy because even being a millimeter off can be a costly error as the drivers navigate around famous buildings, a tight hairpin and past a slew of yachts. Early races saw the occasional car end up in the harbor; now, fans see costly shunts into the barriers. Overtaking is incredibly difficult (the 2003 race saw zero on-track overtakes), and strategy is critical. Nelson Piquet once said driving in Monaco is “like riding a bicycle around your living room.”

As the 2023 edition of the Monaco Grand Prix kicks off, here’s all you need to know about one of the jewels in F1’s crown.

Something of a squeeze

Though they’ve fluctuated over time, Formula One cars have gotten longer, wider and heavier as the machinery continues to advance, particularly in recent years.

The cars were approximately 5.9 feet wide in 2017 to the maximum 2000mm (6.56 feet) last season. This is around two meters, and that’s not counting the tires, which have also gotten wider.

When it comes to tight tracks like Monaco, where the circuit’s space is dictated by its surroundings, width can present unique challenges as drivers figure out how to navigate areas like the Turn 6 hairpin.

Points of interest (with a history lesson)

The Monaco Grand Prix is part of motorsport’s Triple Crown (along with the Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans) for a reason. It’s 78 laps of pure adrenaline as drivers tackle the 19 turns in the heart of the Principality, zipping past the iconic Monte-Carlo Casino, the yacht-filled harbor and more.

Turn 1: Sainte Dévote

The track’s opening turn is a righthander with a small chapel just beyond the barriers on the left. Expect to see lockups happen here and cars go straight into the run-off. During the opening lap, it’s one of the few places you could see a shuffle in the grid depending on who gets a better start.

The Sainte Dévote Chapel dates to the 11th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco.

Turn 3: Massenet

The cars are at the top of the hill as they enter the tight, quick left-hand turn and one of the highest points of the circuit. This portion of the track runs in front of the opera house and is named after French opera composer, Jules Massenet.

Turn 4: Casino Square

This is one of the most iconic and recognizable corners on the circuit that even non-motorsports fans may know — the 1995 James Bond film “Golden Eye” includes scenes filmed in the Monte-Carlo Casino. The righthander takes drivers past the front of the establishment.

Another off-track fun fact: Gambling is illegal for Monaco residents. According to the BBC , Princess Caroline felt the revenue shouldn’t come from Monégasques but instead, foreigners. Monaco citizens still get a good deal: They don’t pay income taxes.

Turn 6: The Hairpin

This turn has had a couple of names over the years, including “Loews Hairpin” or the “Fairmont Hairpin,” the latter of which is the name of a famous hotel just outside of the corner. Sandwiched between a pair of righthanders, it’s one of the slowest turns on F1’s calendar (think normal car speed on a residential road type slow), and if the driver does not hit it correctly, they could turn the track into normal street with a traffic jam .

Turn 8: Portier

It’s well recommended for the drivers to take the righthander rather than heading off into the sea as the 20 cars barrel towards the tunnel. This corner is named after a nearby neighborhood, Le Portier.

There’s been a few infamous crashes here, such as in 1988 when Ayrton Senna’s wreck led to his rival (and teammate) Alain Prost winning. Senna went straight to his Monaco apartment afterwards and didn’t contact the team until later that evening. In 2017, Jenson Button and Pascal Wehrlein were involved in a nasty-looking collision. Button was competing for McLaren in a one-off appearance and tried to make a move on the inside of Wehrlein’s Sauber. The gap closed, and Wehrlein’s car ended up sideways. Wehrlein later said, per Sky Sports , that his head touched the barrier.

Then there’s the more recent moment that caused a stir during the 2022 season, when Sergio Pérez lost the rear of his car during qualifying and crashed backwards into the barrier at Portier.

Turns 10 and 11: Nouvelle Chicane

After going through the tunnel, drivers are met with a prime overtaking opportunity in front of the yachts. The chicane was reprofiled in the 1980s, changing the name from Chicane du Port to Nouvelle Chicane (which means new in French).

Turn 12: Tabac

A tobacco shop nestled on the outside of the track gave this lefthander its name. During the 1950 grand prix, a wave crashed into this corner, causing a major pile up that eliminated a chunk of the grid.

Turns 13-16: The Swimming Pool section

This technical complex has drivers essentially tackle two chicanes — the left-to-right Louis Chiron (named after a former Monégasque F1 driver) and a right-to-left sequence that takes the drivers out of the swimming pool section. This latter sequence, called Piscine, is a slower portion as history has seen drivers clip part of the wall on Turn 15, which could break the suspension and/or send drivers flying into the barriers on the outside of Turn 16.

Mick Schumacher crashed in this section during last year’s race, splitting his car into two when he hit the barriers.

This fairly narrow corner is named after a restaurant of the same name (which itself shares a name with the scorpionfish that’s an ingredient in bouillabaisse). The righthander’s arguably most famous moment came during 2006 qualifying when Michael Schumacher caused a scandal of sorts. The stewards determined the Ferrari driver purposefully parked his car at Rascasse to prevent competitors from improving their times and sent him to the back of the grid for race day.

Virage Antony Noghes

Finally, we come to the portion that is named after the Monaco Grand Prix’s founder. It’s the rare point on the track where two cars can go side-by-side — and have before. In 2010, Michael Schumacher passed Fernando Alonso heading into this portion right as the safety car was leaving the track (and was subsequently dealt a penalty).

Drivers defend Monaco

Though it may sound dramatic, getting through Monaco is a matter of survival. Mika Häkkinen, who won the F1 world championship in 1998 and 1999, won the Monaco Grand Prix 25 years ago, and in a tweet this week, he acknowledged fans may feel the race is “too predictable” because of the overtaking difficulty. But he highlighted why it’s still a noteworthy grand prix: “For me it’s the challenge between the driver and the circuit, still unique in #F1.”

The current F1 drivers agree. Esteban Ocon said last season, “It’s one way to race that you don’t have anywhere else. You really need to qualify and the race is very difficult to overtake or you need to take a risk. So for us, it’s completely different.”

Focus is vital, Valtteri Bottas said Thursday. “If you can keep the concentration for each quarter, each lap, you won’t make a mistake.” Practice is another key element, not just on track but also on the simulator.

Charles Leclerc — a Monaco native who remembers watching Ferrari’s red car zipping past from his friend’s balcony growing up — said this race weekend takes a different approach. “Whenever we get to this track is all about going step by step to the limit and so qualifying where you go all out. And that’s such an incredible feeling.” The Monégasque likened the track to his karting days. “You don’t really have time to think because there are no straights so it’s corners after corners.”

Monaco presents a balance of risk versus reward — just how far do you push?

“Most often, it’s just sheer luck,” Lewis Hamilton said. “Throw it into the corner and come out with your eyes open. And hopefully you’ve made it round.”

Ferrari-Riva-Speedboat

On board with serial superyacht owner Piero Ferrari

“My dad was a car guy,” he says understatedly. Enzo Ferrari’s son is also something of a boat guy, as he tells Risa Merl, and fittingly has Riva very close to his heart...

For a man whose whole life is all about speed, Piero Ferrari knows how to take things slow. He speaks softly, at a calm, unhurried pace as he lounges, in a perfectly tailored Italian suit, in the saloon of the stylish new Riva 110' Dolcevita at the Monaco Yacht Show.

It’s a fitting place to meet, as his ties to the Ferretti Group , Riva’s parent company, run deep. Not only does Ferrari own a Riva Bahamas runabout and a Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 37 motor yacht, but he holds a 13.2 per cent stake in the Italian yacht builder, sits on the board, chairs its product development committee and is the vice-president of another company in the group, custom superyacht builder CRN . It is larger than the 10 per cent share he owns in the legendary car manufacturer with which he shares his name, and where he still serves as vice-chairman.

Though it’s the height of the Monaco show, Ferrari insists he’s merely here “for a vacation to see some boats, maybe have a few meetings, and then disappear into my home in Monaco”. His main residence is in Modena, Italy, near Maranello, home to the Ferrari headquarters.

The Navetta 37, called, appropriately, Race , is berthed in La Spezia and Ferrari uses it for summer sailing in Capri and for cruising further afield, to Croatia and Greece. “I love Capri and the Amalfi Coast – it’s an area famous for its good food,” he says. When on board, Ferrari relishes the simple pleasures of a relaxed cruising lifestyle. “You are travelling, but you don’t need to have luggage, you have everything with you. To see nature from the sea is a very different feeling that I love very much.”

The second and only living son of Enzo Ferrari, Piero was born in 1945, just two years before the very first Ferrari car , the 125 S, was introduced. He grew up with the company and watched as his father developed it into a true automotive empire.

“He never had time for vacations,” Ferrari says of his father. On the rare occasions that Enzo did take the family away for a holiday, it was to Rimini on the Adriatic Sea, “because my dad very much loved the seafood there”. But on these trips the family merely admired the sea from afar. Enzo never had much interest in yachts. “My dad was a car guy,” Ferrari says, smiling.

It wasn’t until he was in his early 20s that Ferrari discovered a passion for boats. “I was a young guy, and my first boat was a four metre Pirelli RIB with a 30 horsepower outboard – that was the beginning of my career as a boat owner,” he says. “Then I’d move up in size, metre by metre, finally all the way up to the Custom Line 37. I don’t remember how many boats I’ve had in my life, but it’s more than 20. I’ve had sailboats, fast boats like a Pershing , and now I’m back to a displacement boat. I like variety.”

Race was designed to meet Ferrari’s specific needs. “I had in mind to have that size of boat,” he explains. “It’s a very balanced concept of contemporary design, and it’s very functional.” He insisted that the yacht have large windows for maximum light and that it cruise comfortably, so a good deal of attention was paid to hull design and stability.

When it comes to yachting, Ferrari likes to throttle back. He has tried go-fast models such as Cigarette boats – “for an hour, no more” – but they’re not his passion, nor is racing around cans at sailing regattas. “I like to cruise,” he declares. “I love sailing, but give me time.”

Ferrari has spent most of his time as a yacht owner at the helm, captaining the vessels himself. Now that he has the Navetta 37, he has a captain but he still enjoys spending time on the bridge and poking around in the engine room, fascinated by anything connected to the technology and management of a yacht. If he’d had his way, he would have studied engineering. “I wanted to be an engineer, but my father pushed me to do economics. My mentality is more engineering, and I never actually had a job linked to economics,” he says. Though Ferrari didn’t initially study engineering, later in life he has been recognised for his work in the field, garnering an honorary degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Naples Federico II in 2004 and another in mechanical engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 2005.

Piero’s first job was working at Ferrari. This was no nepotistic appointment to management; he was put to work in the purchasing department, buying parts for racing cars. He credits this first job with teaching him about the importance of quality in parts and how to negotiate.

Carrying a name like Ferrari might seem a heavy burden, but Piero takes it in his stride – and appreciates the education his unique upbringing has given him. His business ventures have stretched beyond the automotive realm. He was president of Piaggio Aero Industries from 1998 to 2014 and was also a board member and vice-president of Banca Popolare dell’Emilia Romagna for a number of years. Today, along with his roles at Ferrari and Ferretti Group, he serves as chairman of the automotive engineering and manufacturing company HPE COXA.

“Everything I learned in Ferrari, I can use in other businesses,” he says. “And I’m still a 10 per cent owner of Ferrari. It’s now on the stock market, it’s a worldwide company, a recognised brand – but to me, Ferrari is my family.”

He owns eight of the company’s cars – “One was a gift from my father, one was specially made for me” – and is currently collaborating on Ferrari’s long-term vision. He forecasts that after 2022, 60 per cent of Ferrari cars will be hybrid. “Hybrid will be a larger part of Ferrari’s production. Hybrid gives you fuel economy and performance. And Formula One is the most efficient engine in the world, because it’s burning less fuel than a diesel engine, but with huge performance. This is the future of Ferrari.”

The key to design, meanwhile, is achieving a balance between tradition and innovation, and not going too far too soon, he says. “Steve Jobs introduced a touchscreen device in the 1990s. It was just a device, it was not in a mobile phone, and they lost a lot of money and Apple did terribly. That project failed. It was too far, too advanced for people to understand. They didn’t have the need for it yet.”

In a similar vein, Ferrari is wary of putting too much value in concept cars, which he says the motor shows make a big fuss over every year but none go into production. A balance of heritage and modernity is always on his mind, whether it comes to car or yacht design. “Tradition doesn’t mean that you have to always keep what you had in the past, but it’s important to have a clear idea of the heritage of the brand and the style,” he says. “Style is the number one thing that you have to pay attention to, because a Ferrari or a boat is not something that you buy because you have a need, it’s something that you have to fall in love with and think, ‘That’s beautiful. I want it. I want this boat.’ ”

He lets slip that the next boat he’s fallen in love with is going to be even bigger, the first ever Riva 50 superyacht, the biggest yacht the yard has ever built. It’s currently in build and due to launch in March 2019. “I love the Riva brand, I love the Riva style, and the details are a different taste from other yachts. So Alberto Galassi, the CEO of the company, and I decided that it was time to have a bigger Riva.”

This isn’t the first time that the Riva and Ferrari names have been uttered in the same breath. In 1990, a limited-edition Riva-Ferrari speedboat made waves. Only 30 hulls were built, and Piero still uses his on Lake Garda.

The best part of any of his myriad jobs is when he gets the chance to climb behind the wheel, whether it’s to test a new boat or drive a new Ferrari. “It’s most fun when they come and ask my opinion about the feeling of a new car – or a new boat. The launch of a new boat is a very special moment.” Ferrari admits, however, to no longer attending the launches of his own boats. Once, many years ago, before his days with the Ferretti Group, he attended a launch and “everything on the boat broke!” He’s concerned he might be a jinx.

Perhaps he’ll reconsider for the launch of his new 50 metre Riva, on which he plans to do more cruising and enjoy the chance to take his otherwise busy life at a relaxed pace.

Perez comes from behind to win 2022 F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez drove brilliantly on Sunday to win the 2022 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, marking the third win of his career and the first at the prestigious Monaco race.

It was a hard-fought victory as Perez was not only faced with an all-Ferrari front row but also heavy rain, safety cars and fading tires. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finished second only 1.15 seconds behind while third place went to fellow Red Bull driver Max Verstappen approximately 1.5 seconds behind the winner.

The race start was delayed for over an hour due to rain, and when the green light was given the drivers faced very wet conditions. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was on pole, at a track where it's notoriously difficult to pass, and early on it looked like he would comfortably win his home race.

However, the track started to dry and, what turned out to be brilliant strategy, Perez on lap 16 and at in fourth position was the first of the front runners to pit and switch from Wet to Intermediate tires. Leclerc made the same change two laps later, as did Verstappen, which allowed Perez to catch up them. Sainz however stayed out until lap 22, switching straight to slicks and then in a surprising move Ferrari decided to do the same with Leclerc, calling him in at the same time for a double stop.

This played into Red Bull’s hands as Perez managed to get ahead of Sainz to claim the lead spot and Verstappen did the same with Leclerc to move into third. The race was more or less over at this point, although it was stopped one more time after Haas' Mick Schumacher had a major accident at Swimming Pool on lap 27, from which he fortunately suffered no injuries though his car was ripped in two.

Perez controlled the race after the restart, though his tires started to fade around lap 55. This allowed Sainz, Verstappen and Leclerc to close in, with Sainz almost making a pass at the hairpin but getting denied by Perez. After the top three finished, Leclerc crossed the line fourth while Mercedes-Benz AMG's George Russell rounded out the top five.

Following the weekend's action, Verstappen saw his leading points tally in the 2022 Drivers' Championship grow to 125 points. Leclerc is second with 116 points and Perez is third with 110 points. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull leads with 235 points, versus the 199 of Ferrari and 134 of Mercedes.

The next round on the calendar is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a fortnight.

By 1965, essentially every car that inched its way off the Maranello production line was assembled by hand. Maserati was loping along at a similar pace, and Lamborghini —just born—made fewer than 100 cars a year after its founding. Those marques occupied such a rarefied strata, that really, anything they made throughout that period must be regarded as much art as automobile.

A 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS.

A high-water mark for the era was Ferrari’s elegant 275 GTS, a superb 1965 example of which will be offered at Monaco Car Auctions ’ Ferrari-only L’Astarossa sale, which returns to the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco for its second edition on June 8. Ferrari unveiled its 275 GTS at the 1964 Paris Motor Show, along with the better-known 275 GTB. While more than 800 GTBs of various model variants were produced, Ferrari made just 200 examples of the GTS between late 1964 and early 1966.

The 29th produced, the car on offer was then delivered new to Spain, where it has primarily resided since. A full restoration was performed in 2008 by GPS Classic in Italy, which returned the vehicle to its original condition. With matching numbers and retaining its original engine, this GTS wears the original paint and interior colorways of Blu Chiaro and Pelle Blu , respectively.

Shown at the 2009 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the car currently has 3,169 kilometers (about 1,969 miles) on its odometer, and has been maintained by its devoted steward since its restoration. The vehicle is accompanied by Ferrari Classiche certification and comprehensive documentation from U.K. Ferrari specialist DK Engineering. This important piece of Ferrari history is estimated to sell for between $1.6 million to $2 million.

GoldenEye | 1995

Goldeneye location: Brompton Cemetery, Earls Court, London

  • Tchéky Karyo,
  • Minnie Driver,
  • Charles Dance

Goldeneye location: Monte Carlo Bay, Monaco

The increasingly moribund Bond series was on the verge of retirement when it got a new lease of life with Pierce Brosnan .

The opening teaser, Bond’s spectacular bungee jump, at the ‘Arkangel Chemical Weapons Facility – USSR’, is actually the Tusker Dam, Lake Verzasca , at Hittnau in Switzerland .

Goldeneye location: Casino de Monte Carlo, Monte carlo, Monaco

Bond’s race with Xenia Onatopp ( Famke Janssen ), supposedly in the hills above ‘Monte Carlo’, uses the mountain roads around Thorenc , about 20 miles north of Grasse, way to the northwest. Nevertheless, Bond arrives at the Casino de Monte Carlo , Place du Casino, Monte Carlo , and it’s from the bay at Monte Carlo that Onatopp steals the Stealth helicopter. You can see the principality again as the site of the Grand Prix race in Iron Man 2 .

M’s office is, finally, MI6’s real HQ, Vauxhall Cross , the spanking new building at 85 Albert Embankment on the Thames by Vauxhall Bridge. It turns up again, at the start of the river chase in The World Is Not Enough , and gets blown up in Skyfall . Pierce Brosnan turns up at the HQ as a somewhat shabbier, seedier agent in John Boorman ’s film of John Le Carre ’s The Tailor of Panama .

Goldeneye location: Palace Square, St Petersburg, Russia

Although there is some real filming in St Petersburg in Russia , much of the tank chase was filmed on a massive set, built at the old Rolls Royce aircraft plant in Leavesden , Hertfordshire , which has since, of course, been developed to become the vast Leavesden Studio , home of the Harry Potter films and the Warner Bros Studio Tour .

Many of the other ‘Russian’ locations were filmed around the southeast of England. For instance, ‘St Petersburg Airport’, where Bond is met by Jack Wade ( Joe Don Baker ), is actually the Queen’s Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse , Epsom , Surrey . Built in 1992, the exclusive Stand overlooks the finishing line of the Epsom Downs course, which in June hosts the English Derby – arguably the world’s most famous horse race.

Goldeneye location: Langham Hotel, Portland Place, London W1

And, despite those Russian flags, the ‘Grand Hotel Europe’ is the Langham London , 1c Portland Place W1 , at the top of Regent Street opposite the BBC’s Broadcasting House.

Goldeneye location: Somerset House, The Strand, London

The 'St Petersburg' square, where Wade uses a sledgehammer to fix his rusty blue Moskovich, is the courtyard of the recently restored Somerset House on the Strand. The spectacular neo-classical building, surrounding a vast courtyard tucked away between the Strand and the River Thames, used to function as the registry of births, marriages and deaths. It's been reinvented as a public space for culture and the arts and, during the winter its fountain court becomes an ice-skating rink. In the summer, there are occasional outdoor movie screenings.

Somerset House later became the ‘Ministry of Defence’ in Tomorrow Never Dies . This popular filming location can also be seen in Tim Burton ’s Sleepy Hollow (as turn-of-the-century ‘Manhattan’), as the exterior of ‘Devonshire House’ in historical biopic The Duchess , with Keira Knightley ; Billy Wilder ’s superb The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (as the ‘Diogenes Club’ where Holmes meets his older brother Mycroft ( Christopher Lee ); as ‘Buckingham Palace’ in King Ralph ; in Shanghai Knights (where Jackie Chan invents the kung fu movie at the end of the film); as ‘Beverly Hills’ in Bride And Prejudice and is the site of the postbox explosion in Suffragette .

Goldeneye location: St Sofia, Moscow Road, Bayswater, London W2

The interior of the ‘St Petersburg ’ church, in which Natalya ( Izabella Scorupco ) hides out, is St Sofia’s Greek Cathedral , Moscow Road, Bayswater, W2 , seen previously as the 'Russian' church in which Tchaikovsky marries Nina in Ken Russell ’s biopic of the composer, The Music Lovers , as a royal residence in Matthew Vaughn ’s fantasy Stardust and as the 'Yugoslavian' church in Paul Feig ’s 2019 tearjerker Last Christmas .

The exterior of the church, though, is the rear (Fulham Road side) of the 1839 chapel in Brompton Cemetery, Old Brompton Road, Earl’s Court, SW5 . You might recognise this as the cemetery where Rowan Atkinson disrupts the funeral in Bond spoof Johnny English .

This extravagantly Victorian graveyard also features in arty horror pic Afraid Of The Dark , Iain Softley ’s Henry James adaptation The Wings of the Dove and bittersweet romantic comedy Jack and Sarah , with Richard E Grant .

More recently it was the scene of a brutal murder in David Cronenberg ’s sinister Eastern Promises , of Lord Blackwood’s mysterious resurrection from the ‘Blackwood family vault’ in Guy Ritchie ’s Sherlock Holmes , Lord George's funeral in the same director's The Gentlemen and of a clandestine meeting in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation .

Goldeneye location: Draper's Hall, Throgmorton Street, London EC2

It would cost a fortune to build sets this grand, so the ‘St Petersburg’ council chamber, in which General Ourumov learns that Natalya has survived the GoldenEye detonation, uses the grandiose architecture of the Livery Hall of the Drapers’ Company, Throgmorton Street, EC2 in the City of London (which also became ‘Russia’ for the Val Kilmer version of The Saint , but reverts to being London for The King's Speech ). The building is not normally open to the public, but for a weekend in September, Open House London gives you the chance to take a look inside some of the city's architectural wonders.

The railway scenes were filmed on the Nene Valley Railway , in Peterborough , which had previously been used in Octopussy .

The massive radio telescope dish is the Arecibo Observatory , Puerto Rico , which you may recognise from Robert Zemeckis ’ Contact , with Jodie Foster , or from sci-fi Species .
