Read on to, discover more about legendary Fisher yachts, and the fascinating story behind The Meretune! The Meretune: This beautiful yacht features a distinctive design large displacement hull that offers ample room down below, with 2 cabins, and 2 washrooms. It also offers a neat galley, and large saloon with couches, and ample storage. The over-sized Pilot house with large sunroof that makes a warm enclosed area above deck, that can comfortably seat the whole crew, which is very much appreciated in the evening, or in cooler or windy weather. It is equipped with an inline 6 cylinder 6.2 liter Ford Diesel engine, located directly below the pilothouse, and accessible from both a hatch in the pilothouse floor, and from alongside in the passageway down below. It has a front and rear private cabin, 2 heads (full washrooms), and a well equipped galley. The Fisher Sailing Yacht line is easy recognizable: The professional looking wheelhouse and a hull resembling a North Atlantic fishing boat with rounded stern and high freeboard. The double masts with Ketch sailplan is another distinctive feature of the larger yachts in the Fisher line. They have always revered for their seaworthiness and the ability to remain unflustered in extreme weather. Fishers were built in a number of different sizes, with only about a dozen built in the largest size: The Fisher 46 The Meretune Story: The Meretune started life in 1977 in a boatyard, in Chichester England. The heavy solid fibreglass hull was built around a long shallow 10 ton cast iron keel. After the major construction work was completed she was christened "The Meretune of Chichester" before being moved to Sri Lanka for woodwork finishing in exotic hardwoods there by Neil Marine. The early part of her life just after being built is a bit unclear, but at some point she was sold to her first owner in 1978 at at some point made it across the Atlantic and ended up in Florida where she was purchased by her second owner in 1984. She was brought through the Panama canal in the early 1990's, and has explored the coastlines, and islands of the Pacific Northwest ever since. Recent Restoration & Refurbishing (completed a year and a half ago): About 3 years ago the Meretune was brought ashore for some extensive restoration work that included all new windows throughout, all exterior finishes were redone, with considerable reworking of the scuppers. The interior has had considerable refinishing too including most of the woodwork, and paneling. Sadly the long time owner passed away before the work was completed. The work went on and was finished, and took over a year to complete. She has been sitting for about a year and a half in a boatyard ever since. She has not returned to the water, but is looking for a new owner now to take charge of her, and pilot her onto future adventures. Approximately $90,000.00 was spent on this extensive exterior, and interior restoration work. See photos below: A partial Marine Survey was done around a year and a half ago focusing mainly on electrical systems, with some minor look at mechanical points too. It was determined that some of the electrical systems should be brought up to date, as most of them are original. We will leave this up to next owner to decide how to proceed with this. Update to your specifications, or continue to use her as-is. This survey is available as a PDF file by email for your reference. We will cooperate fully with any current complete Marine Surveys that you wish to have done (at your expense). Pricing and Terms: Although offered by broker recently at 249,000USD we are offering it direct for $199,999.00. A non-refundable $2,000.00 deposit is due immediately, payable by Paypal. Balance must be paid in full within 7 days of sale. The boat is sold as-is, where-is, and it will be the new owners responsibility to do any final fitting and adjustments, and pay to have it moved back into the water at the boatyard, and any applicable taxes etc. Replacement cost on a yacht like this is $800,000.00, and possibly much more, depending on fittings, and accessories. This is a superb vessel. In the right hands, with minor finishing, it can deliver many more years of faithful service and enjoyment. With the reputation Fisher yachts have, and with only about a dozen made in this largest size, these are not available often. The new owner of this beautiful yacht won't be disappointed! Inspection arrangements and reimbursement: We recommend you visit the Meretune firsthand located in a boatyard in Bellingham WA. I am available to show prospective bidder/buyers this beautiful Yacht, and can meet them in the area, or pick them up at the Bellingham airport if they are flying in to see it. Reimbursement of travel expenses (regular air & hotel) will be deducted from purchase price on a completed transaction. Coronado Center Cockpit Sailboat - 40 ft LOA - Great live-aboard

Coronado Center Cockpit Sailboat - 40 ft LOA - Great live-aboard

Bainbridge Island, Washington

Make Coronado C35

Great liveaboard sail boat. Many will tell you that it is one of the roomiest boats inside for this size of a boat. Flushdeck design allows approximately 6' headroom throughout, except about 7 ft near the companionway in the main cabin. I've lived aboard for four years, and it was like a mini apartment inside. The center cockpit allows for a nice size stateroom in the back with a full queen size bed (10" thick futon mattress with inner coil springs, is only a year old. I upgraded the anchor to a 70lb CRQ plow, with about 40 ft chain, and then rope. Helps me to sleep well at anchor knowing I won't go anywhere. Also has a smaller dansforth style anchor onboard. Pictures show interior. Rear bed sleeps 2-3 (Queen), front V-birth is roomy and sleeps two just fine, Couch in main cabin folds up into bunks for 2. We have slept 7 aboard very comfortably. 2 more can sleep in the cockpit if you add air mattresses or make cushions to lay on. About the boat: It is older, but in pretty good shape for the age. (Much better than others I looked at when buying). I sail it to the San Juan Islands about once a year for 2 week getaways. I love anchoring out in harbors. Sails are older. Main looks pretty good, but genoa looks older with a small patch that I added last year due to a tear. Probably about due for new one. I have never used the spinnaker, but it is a bright yellow and blue, symmetrical, with 3" pole I bought for $300, and I purchased a sock to use for it. Boat is sloop rigged, but has connections to add a stay, and run it as a cutter rig. I have a stay sail for it, that I believe is Engine was pulled and replaced with an inboard electric by a professional ($4,000) about 5 years ago. it is 36V (6 golf cart batteries). It pushes the boat about 5-6 knots, but at full speed only lasts about an hour. Batteries are 6 years old though, and if replaced with higher volume you might get a lot more. (Or add another bank). It is great for getting in and out of marinas, but for longer trips, I use a 15 horse outboard on the back which is included. I think the impellar went out on it though. I ran it a couple months ago and it wasn't pumping water. I would consider replacing it if I kept it this boat. I have also considered putting a diesel back in for long cruises down to mexico. All plumbing, etc. still seems to be there for a diesel. There is an 8 ft inflatable RIB dinghy that hangs from davits off the back. It has a 6 horse mercury, that is 1-1/2 years old and still under warranty. Great for getting around in bays when at anchor. (I go to the San Juan's a lot). I was going to sell separately, but will include if full price is paid for the boat. Offers below full price won't include the dinghy or smaller outboard. I will sell them separately to recoup some of the difference or keep it for lake fishing. Dodger seems to have been replaced with a frame that is 7" too wide. I had planned on taking a little out of the middle, but please assume that there is no canvas over cockpit. You can have the dodger that I have, but it won't fit as is. Will need to be made smaller. (Material is very good though). Hot water heater was replaced last summer with an 11 gallon stainless (electric) model. Great for multiple showers. I have used it 24 hours after power shut off and still hot. I have a Honda generator that I used to run for the water heater and microwave when at anchor, and to charge the house batteries every couple days. I intend to keep the generator though. I bought it used for under a $1,000 though, so they are easy to come by. Not much in the way of electronics. I have a hand held GPS, hand held (waterproof) VHF, and depth finder up on deck, that are all only a couple of years old. The main VHF is mounted below, but is older, and I never used it, because I was always up above. Refer seems to stop getting cold sometimes and then after I tap on temperature sensors inside, it sometimes starts working again. Haven't figured out if it is a loose wire, or not. There is also a small dorm sized freezer in one of the lockers. It runs off of 110V. Stove is a 2 burner propane unit on gimbals. Has an oven. 2 ea 40 gallon water tanks (80 total). 17 gallon diesel tank in case you put diesel engine back in it. You can buy a used one for a couple thousand. I am currently about 400 miles away, so it is either buy unseen, in which case I will drive there to meet after deposit is made. Or, I will be up in the area the last week of the month to show it if it is not sold yet. Feel free to email to make arrangements to see it. I intend to have it sold this month, even if I have to take less than asking price. Current moorage is $412/mo. It is an awesome small harbor/bay and small marina with great facilities (laundry, rec room available for watching games or entertaining, exercise room, full showers, etc. You can see downtown Seattle skyline from the middle of the harbor. People anchor out there all the time. There is a ferry nearby that goes to downtown Seattle. Or, it is about a 45 minute to 1 hr sail with a 10 knot wind. You can live-aboard if you make arrangements with owner of marina, but he may want a little more money.

This is Hull #1, 1961, Windjammer 21's from California, designed by Morgan Embrogan and built in Southern California back in the 60's and early 70's by various commercial builders. There were at least 15 built and I have a gaff-rigged, topsail cutter. This Windjammer sailed to Hawaii and back from California twice and to Alaska and back to CA. boats have very easily folded masts, even under sail, fit into US containers (24). The Windjammer 21 will sleep 4 in separate bunks and is very comfortable under way and in the slip. With quadrant centerboard up it draw 18 inches and weight empty is 2500#. It has always been great in the Channel Islands because it cuts over the kelp and because it is so light we used to tie off to the kelp (don't shoot me) to keep from carrying 600' feet of line and extra chain necessary to normal anchor around the islands. Boat is in Charleston, SC now on a trailer. Steel trailer has 4 new tires, wheels, bearings, recently pulled from Florida. 6 bags of sails, all rigging, outboard in a well, boat is ready to sail but could use some TLC, paint, varnish, etc. Photo of Black hull boat is a sistership. Could deliver for a fee if needed after purchase.

Typhoon and the people we met treated us like royalty, rolling out the Red Carpet. Major 86's Restoration She had a major restoration on her in 1986 and received new mahogany shear planks, mahogany transom planks, deck beams, teak over plywood deck, mahogany gunwale planks, reinstalled bowsprit, new dawg house, and interior. Detailed Condition Report Some time in early 2000’s she was improperly stored inside a warehouse on the east coat for wintering, and it was to warm. She showed signs of plank separation as would be expected. At that point a decision was made (not by me, some other owner?) to lay a fiberglass sheath over the planks. I don’t know why they didn’t simply repack the planks and float her. Important: I drilled a new thru hole for the Bronze Depth transducer in 2007 and the wood was perfect. No water damage, no sogginess, no mold it was like brand new wood. I have never had a problem with her, and amazingly enough she is drier than the newer plastic boat I own. If you wanted to, you could remove the fiberglass barrier which was attached with Epoxy glue and restore her original wood planking finish. I considered it myself, but never got around to it. Shipping If you decide to ship her, we can assist you in hauling the boat out, stepping the mast, securing all items and supervise her loading on a properly setup and permitted delivery truck. There would be 2 sets of costs which are not included in the auction! 1) The first set of costs are the boat yards. This includes the haul out fees, and crane fees required to load the boat on the truck, plus removal of the mast which requires a crane and one additional hired, qualified boat hand. Estimated $1200. 2) The second set of fees is for the Owner's agent to supervise and assist in the complete process. $600 The acutal hiring / contracting of the shipping company would be soley the buyer's responsibility. Those costs vary, but shipping it back to the East Coast will most likely cost about $5K when all is said and done. Survey If you require a survey with a haul out, the yard fees will be an estimate $400 for the first day, then additional fees for layaway days thereafter. Although if the surveyor is scheduled correctly, it shouldn't require more than one day. There will also be a $250 fee for the captain reuired to move the boat to the haulout ramp, and back. The cost of the surveyor can vary, estimated cost of at least $300 - $500. The whole proposition estimated $1000 -1200. Generally the buyer selects a surveyor to ensure there is no bias to the owner in the report. The survey is paid for by the potential buyer. Special Notes The Shipmate Wood Stove & Heat Shield are not inlcuded in the sale and the oil lamp featured in the pictures is not included. A simple inexpensive alcohol or propane stove can be installed if you desire. Sale & Payment Terms The boat is sold as is with not warranty, and all sales are final. We accept a bank check, cashiers check or cash. The deposit must be paid at the completion of the auction through Ebay via CC or PayPal. The final payment will be held until the payment clears. A personal check can take up to 14 business days. A cashier's check will now require a 3 day hold due to the massive fraud using them. Upon completion of payment clearance, we will issue the buyer the Federal Documentaion with our authorized notary required, via Fed Ex mailer. All yard fees are to be paid directly to them. Our preferred yard is Channel Islands Boat Yard. They have pulled Typhoon many times, and are the cheapest, closest yard in town. Slip Fees The boat is currently on a county slip in Oxnard. It is possible they might allow it to be transfered to the new owner, but no guarantee. You will have to fill out all the appropriate applications, etc. The current slip rent is $372 per month. We can assist you and leave it under our name, if you continue to make the additional monthly payments until you can successfully apply, or have the boat moved. If the sale occurs before the next month's payment is due, there is no charge to you until the next month's payment is required. We also pay $30 a month to have the bottom cleaned, and $20 per month to have the topside cleaned. You can continue paying this fee, or we can cancel it, it is up to you once the boat is yours.

The Bayfield boats were built by Ted Gozzard in Canada and are known for their rugged design and beautiful lines. They are full keel boats with a shoal draft (3'9") making them perfect for the Gulf Coast or the Islands. I hauled out and did a bottom job in April 2013. Also replaced both battery banks in April 2013. The B32s were originally cutter rigged but this one was converted to sloop rig; she can easily be converted back to the cutter. I have sailed the B32s as cutter and sloop and I much prefer the sloop rig. All the mechanicals are in good working condition. There are many extras with this vessel. Islands 17 is a 16 ′ 9 ″ / 5.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Johann Tanzer and built by Ocean Yachts / Sumner Boat Co. (USA) starting in 1972.

Drawing of Islands 17

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The ISLANDS 17 is most likely a ‘splashed’ copy of the TANZER 16 with a reverse transom giving it a slightly longer waterline length. Those who have seen both boats have all commented on the striking similarity, especially in the case of earlier boats by Ocean Yachts. The later version, built by Sumner, (also called SUMNER ISLANDS 17), has a cockpit liner with added flotation as well as number of other modifications. Thanks to ‘Dave from Maine’ for additional information on this yacht.

Both companies were located on Long Island, NY, USA

Sumner Boat Co. was located at: 334 South Bayview Ave. Amityville NY. 11701

My sister and brother-in-law came over for dinner and said, "our neighbor across the street has a sailboat for sale." i drove over and looked. it appeared to be a sumner islands 17 in excellent condition. i had bid on a 12-foot and a 15-foot sumner islands (see below) in the past couple of years, but other ebayers apparently wanted them more than i did., my offer for the boat was accepted and i towed it home. i later discovered that i had an islands 17 built by ocean yachts, of patchogue, long island. ocean yachts built this and other boats from the late sixties until 1979, when it sold out to the sumner family. ocean yachts apparently built the islands 17 only in bright yellow, but the sumner islands boats had mostly white hulls. the island 17 is basically a copy of the tanzer 16, but the slanted transom gave it added length., the main and furling jib were in good condition. the original plywood inside the transom where the gudgeons and motor mount are attached had delaminated, so i replaced this with marine plywood and glassed over it. i also refinished the aft hatch cover and made a new rudder head., the original trailer needed a lot of work and only had 8" wheels, so i put the islands 17 on a cox tilt trailer with 12" wheels, a better winch and nice mast crutch., the hull had a couple of scratches, some of which the previous owner tried to patch with resin. the original color was bleached out and when i removed the numbers, it became quite obvious, so i repainted the hull., finally, i made a rear mast crutch and bought new spreader boots i sold my islands 17 for $1500 someone in oklahoma sent me this picture of his ocean yachts islands 20., the puzzling history of ocean yachts and sumner boats, around 1979, ocean yachts sold its molds to arthur sumner and his son, jonathan, of amityville, ny. sumner boat works added its name and continued building the same line of boats with few changes using hart sails. the sumner boat works was located at the end of south bayview avenue, in amityville, long island. the south bay sailing center is located there today. sumner boat works sold the sprite 8, sumner islands 12, sumner islands 15, sumner islands 17, sumner islands 19, and the mark 25. an archived article in the new york times about a boat show reads : "in your search for innovative ideas, don't overlook older models. in the boating industry, newer is not necessarily better. sumner boat company of amityville, l.i., plans to show its mark 25 for the third year. the boat features a radical sail plan with a 40-foot mast stepped unusually far forward on the boat. the sailboat, which sells for about $22,000, carries a large mainsail and small jib." (the article was printed monday, january 8, 1990, on section c, page 11 of the new york edition. in forum talk it has been claimed that sumner didn't build the mark 25, but just sold the boats. stephen stambleck wrote on sailnet.com (march 2009): "the first five mark 25s were built to order by ontario yachts in toronto. the designer was the founder of c&c yachts" george c. [cumbertson] another 12 were built by eli laminates in long island. after that, construction stopped due to the crash of the industry. additional, larger models, were designed but never built." i found the following two ads on ebay that advertised several larger models from 31' to 37'..

I received the following email from a man named Vinny, who worked for Sumner: I worked at Sumner boats way back in the early 70's... on and off for the next 20 or so. I've lived in Amityville for 46 year's... I still go to the end of Bayview Ave and think of my youth and day's spent employed at Sumner Boat. Heck, I go back so far that I remember Bob Peters, the working foreman and master mechanic at Sumner Boat riding his bicycle to work as I waited for my bus to take me to Park Ave school. Bob lived just on the other side of Montauk Hwy and made his commute on good weather day's. I liked Bob very much and learned a lot from him. Mr Sumner was in my opinion hard on him and quite demanding... I helped build his 8' dink and a 10'er. They could be rowed or sailed. I still have a brochure for the 8'er. I also remember the larger boats he made. Three or so were under construction at the time. GM diesels sat in the machine shop next to a motor sailor and a 30' or so cruiser. I saw one going on a sea trial... It went pretty good. One was an upside down hull of frame work with strips of wood laid down like planking, then covered with epoxy, glass cloth and I think wire mesh... If any of the motor sailor's or larger Sumner Craft still exsist please email me. Vinny I emailed Vinny the two small clips shown above and he immediately recognized the boats. I read on a forum that around 1995, The Sumner factory caught fire and was destroyed including most of the tooling and some molds. One source on WoodenBoat.com said that Sumner produced boats from 1972 until 1997, but another forum entry said "Sumner was in business long before 1972. That is around the time they switched to all glass boats. They were proponents of glass covered strip planked boats in the 50's and 60's." Justin Sumner wrote on www.voile.org in 2006, "My father, Jonathan and his dad, Arthur ran Sumner Boat Company back in the day. Unfortunately all the molds have been destroyed from the Sumner line." At some time, the factory in Amityville was purchased by Bill Menger of Menger Boat Works. Menger became well known for his catboats. An obit for Bill Menger (2004) reports , "In 1989, a fire nearly shut down the business, destroying the molds for the fiberglass hulls. But father and son decided to continue what they started, and reopened Menger Boatworks in an old seaplane factory in Amityville, with sliding doors that open onto Ketchum Creek." After the fire they apparently specialized in catboats. Menger catboats are now produced by Thompson Boatworks. I could not ascertain whether the fires mentioned are the same event with faulty dates or if there were two different fires. Vinny wrote me, As far as a fire goes, this did not happen. I know this to be fact for two reasons. 1) I would have heard about it, and 2) the place would not have survived, as it was loaded with saw dust, reducers and the likes. If anyone can shed more light on the puzzle, I would be happy to post it here. Below are pictures of the Sumner Islands 19, a neat little pocket cruiser.

I just bought what was described to me a an "Ocean Yachts 17" but could not find any info whatsoever under this name. I just happened to come across an ad for an Islander 17 and there she was!! Does anyone have any information on the boat? Especially a manual, brochure, or any other kind of documentation. I will gladly reimburse you for your effort. Also any pictures you may have or a web site you can point me to. Thank you, Dan Dragoi 703-973-3287

Ocean Yachts Co of Patchogue NY Dan, If what you have has a hull identification number that starts with XYX, then you have an Islands 17, not an Islander which is a power boat. If you have the original sails, then the insignia on the sail should be a Y inscribed inside a circle with the model number. Ocean Yachts that made the Islands sailboats back in the 1970's is apparently no longer in business. I have an Islands 20 that I bought about four months ago and am working it back into shape. I sorry that I don't have any decent pictures. Everything is covered with tarps because the front hatch is missing and the companionway cover leaks. If you do have an Islands 17, drop me an e-mail, and we can compare notes. Ray [email protected]

I have just acquired an OY Islands 17 and have spent some time exercising my Google-fu skills and finding out information about it. To keep this brief, I'll just post a few links which I have found very helpful: 1. Apparently, the Islands 17 is a very close copy of the Tanzer 16. http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/islands17.html http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/ I especially have found this helpful, as I have to fabricate a rudder to replace the one missing from my boat: http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/tsheet1a.jpg I am part way through the fabrication right now. 2. The original "owner's manual," such as it is, for the Sumner Islands 17: http://www.rvharvey.com/images-boats/sumnerislands17.pdf 3. A little more info about the Sumner Islands 17: http://www.rvharvey.com/sumner_islands.htm - Bill T. - Richmond, VA

I first learned to sail on the O'day Sprite. They are a FUN little boat!! I believe that it is a 10 foot boat. SPRITE 10 (O'DAY) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com Here is a thread w/ some info: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/oday/17198-oday-sprite.html What do you want to know?

Thanks for the reply! Im not totally convinced it is an O'Day. It doesnt have any oday labels on it. and the cockpit storage area design seems different. I will keep an open mind though! If it is an oday how does it do in rough (for a dinghy) weather. Also do you have any pictures of rigging lastly a rigging diagram or parts list. Im looking to buy some sails. im going to add a photo of the actual boat to the original post. (its from the original ad.

Take a look at the HIN on the top starboard transom. That will tell you everything you need to know about the manufacturer.

Thanks i will when i get home

Arcb

Nice boat. I camp cruise my Walker Bay 8, so a 12' boat should be great. As long as you plan to sleep ashore, that boat looks like it would be pretty uncomfortable to sleep in (not as uncomfortable as my WB 8 though). One observation I have is there is no thwart to sit on while you row. I saw an ingenious invention recently on a cruising Enterprise where the guy had fashioned a rowing seat that sat on top of the centre board trunk when the dagger board is not in use. Also, I like long sweeps when rowing a sailing dinghy because they tend to be beamy. I use 6 1/2s in my WB.

Jeff_H

My first boat was a Sprite. They were really nice little boats. As a 12 year old, I sailed my Sprite in a bunch of different conditions and she sailed well even getting me home safely in the high winds of a thunderstorm. But the boat in that picture is not a Sprite. Sprite's are 10 feet long and do not have a foredeck or side tanks. That looks like a American Fiberglass Rhodes Kingfisher which was a 12 footer. That said the model name appears to be written in the stripe on the side of the boat near the transom. I would agree with the recommendation to get the longest oars that you can store in the boat. I used a boat that had a similar interior layout. The owner had built a removable seat that spanned between the side tanks for rowing and stowed alongside of the side of the centerboard trunk when sailing. Jeff

I've figured it out! It's a Sumner 12 sprite!!. Anyone know anything about these?! I'm gonna need new sails. Also thank you for the ideas regarding oars and **** pit.

There is no such thing as a Sumner 12 Sprite. That does appear to be a Sumner Island 12. Actually, one odd thing is that your pictures appear to be of two different boats. The upper picture is definitely an Island 12. For a while, (late 1960s through the 1980's) Sumner was probably one of the most prolific builders of fiberglass dinghies. Most of their designs were cheaply executed versions of more popular higher quality dinghies. The Sumners tended to be chopped glass and quite heavy, but not especially strong. I just gave one away; a Sumner 8 dinghy that was beyond being worth rebuilding. The glass work was scarily poor on it. Sumner also bought tooling from other boat builders who were discontinuing production of a model or whole line of boats. The Island series was originally built by another boat company. Sumner bought the tooling and produced them for a number of years. There was a whole line of Sumner Islands in a number of sizes and configurations. Build quality wise, the Island series appear to be a step up in design and build quality from their dinghies. I have no idea how well they sail. Jeff

Thanks but as i explained i had an 'actual picture' and a picture of a identical cockpit i found online. This actually happened to be the same boat. I found the ID number and did some research. It is a sumner 12 sprite which seems identical or the same to the sumner island 12. I have sailed it 3 times now and im working on changing some of the hardware because it was very cheap... The boat seems to point fine and is very stable for a 12 foot dinghy. Im hoping to do some cool camping! Thanks for all the advice people!. i still cannot find any other info.

Vehicle Water transportation Sailing Boat Sail

Sorry to drag up an old thread. My son bought a Sumner Sprite 12 at a yard sale. Trying to find any info on rigging, particularly the goose neck which we don't have. Wondering if you still have the boat and would mind sharing a few pictures close up of your rigging> Thanks in advance for the help.

Alright next question!!! Now although this is a new dinghy and it seems to have some slightly cheap hardware(that im changing) Im to drive to honda key florida and do some dinghy cruising around the area. i Have an o'day 22 and an 7.3 s2 and a super sunfish which are fun but i would like to cruise the shallow areas with my new toy. Any experience? Advice? Recommendations?

Sumner Island 19 Sailboat

Here's one that may not be on your list, the Sumner Islands 19. Manufacturer was Sumner boat Company from Amityville, NY. They are now out of business (like many others) and info is difficult to find.

Here is a comment about the mfg found online: My name is Justen Sumner, my father, Jonathan and his dad, Arthur ran Sumner Boat Company back in the day. Unfortunetly all the molds have been destroyed from the Sumner line. The factory in Amityville, NY is currently inhabited by Menger Boat Works and The Dinghy Shop.

My grandfather has one. I really doubt he has a manual, though. It's not that complicated of a boat so you can probably figure most stuff out on your own. About the only complaint he had about it is that it constantly leaked around the centerboard even after the dealer tried to fix it. It's a lot of fun to sail on small bodies of water.
