Frog Princess 2005 Bruce King Design 25 (3502216)

"Frog Princess" 2005 Bruce King Design 25'

"A Master Builds one for himself" After decades designer Bruce King, of Hinckley Picnic Boat fame, launches his 24' cutter. King launched the classic cutter Frog Princess at Boothbay Region Boatyard in Southport, Maine in 2005.

Full Description

Antonio Stradivari is considered the most significant and greatest artisan in the field of instrument making the world has ever known. His instruments are true masterpieces that have been emulated but never duplicated. In some way a similar parallel can be made with Frog Princess.  Bruce King is considered to be one of the finest yacht designers of our time. His vision combined with exquisite execution by Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay Maine, has created floating masterpieces such as WHITEHAWK, ANTONISA, SCHERHERAZADE and LIBERTY to name a few. His craft are truly awe inspiring and employ the latest construction methods and materials while maintaining an aesthetic that only a true visionary could create. Each of his boats are one of a kind and Frog Princess is even more so as she was built for the man himself. If you are looking for a Stradivarius we can’t help you. If you are searching for a truly amazing piece of maritime history that sails as good as she looks then Frog Princess is worth serious consideration. Highly Recommended. Vessel Overview" A Master Builds One For Himself" is how Soundings magazine described Bruce Kings 24' raised deck cutter "FROG PRINCESS". It has also been mentioned in the Rob Report as an example of the best in modern classic sailboats.Bruce King is considered to be one of the finest yacht designers of our time. His vision combined with exquisite execution by Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay Maine has created floating masterpieces such as WHITEHAWK , ANTONISA , SCHERHERAZADE and LIBERTY to name a few. His craft are truly awe inspiring and employ the latest construction techniques while maintaining classic aesthetics that only a true visionary could create. The FROG PRINCESS was a gift he built for his daughter who loved the fairy tale "The Frog Princess". Launched in 2005 in Boothbay Maine to the sounds of bagpipes and great ceremony , it was a feature of the bay for many years. A pioneer in cold molding methods, Mr King used only the finest craftmanship and materials. The hull is made of Western red cedar and red Meranti set in diagonal layers and coated with 5 layers of West System epoxy. The custom interior mahogany carving and fitting was done by craftsmen at Hodgdon Yachts in Southport Maine. New green Awlgrip paint has been applied to the hull and the bottom was recently stripped to the epoxy with new West System epoxy applied . Three coats of 2000/20001 epoxy primer and 2 coats of MIcron CSC black bottom paint have been recently applied also. New gold leaf lettering was applied to the name. There are accommodations for two for weekend cruising and the raised deck configuration allows adequate seating below deck. There is a discreet head and pot belly stove to heat your coffee. A good sized cockpit with "park bench" style seating provides for more comfort than is usual in a boat this size. The sails were hand made by Nathaniel Wilson in Boothbay Maine, are in excellent condition and display many classic features, The jib was recently refurbished by him also. The brightwork has been done professionally as needed. The Frog Princess spent the Maine winters comfortably in inside storage and was used sparingly in the short summer seasons. Its excellent condition reflects this high level of care . This is a boat with classic looks and modern features, such as the fin keel and roller furling. If you are looking for a truly amazing piece of maritime history that sails as good as it looks then the Frog Princess is worth serious consideration. This boat is a Stradivarius of design and quality. A one of a kind boat built to the highest standards for the personal use of one of boatings greatest designers.   This boat leaves no head unturned when it sails by. There is simply nothing else like it.Construction DetailsCold-molded construction with five 1/8" mahogany laminates over longitudinal stringers and mahogany backbone. Plywood and epoxy painted deck and varnished teak trim. Tiller steering to outboard rudder; 1,200-lb. lead outside ballast. Green topsides, white boot top and black bottom; 5' x 7' self-bailing cockpit. new bottom....striped / new coats of West sys epoxy/ epoxy primer/bottom paint including rudder new green Awlgrip hull paint / gold leaf lettering AccomodationsFrog Princess accommodations are beautifully thought out and executed for two. 2 single berths, 1 head. Shipmate 2-burner, wood-burning stoveStainless Steel SinkShipmate 2-burner, wood-burning stoveFiberglass icebox.  Folding dining table. Ventilation: 1 hatch and 1 opening port with screen. Engine ** UPGRADED and UPDATED** $17,000 Electric motor upgrade! Living , Modern

Bruce King and his team have designed some of the world’s most remarkable yachts. His principles are simple: he and his team believe that to be successful, a yacht must be beautiful. He was a prolific designer for Ericson with his fiberglass racers and cruisers, but it was his pioneering use of West System epoxy to construct large super yachts in wood that allowed him to stay true to a classic design. This design typically includes a long overhang and a low freeboard to accentuate the classic sheer and has come to be a signature of many of his classically beautiful yachts.

Notable awards:

  • 1990 International Super Yacht Design Award – Signe
  • 1993 International Super Yacht Design Award – Hetairos
  • 1994 Show Boats, Best large sailing yacht interior – Alejandra
  • 2000 Show Boats, Best sailing yacht 38 meters and under – Antonisa
  • 2008 Maine Maritime museum Mariner’s Award

From 1964 to 2004, Bruce King produced boat designs of varied types, reaching an incredible number of more than 7,000 existing boats. These include the early production boats, built mostly by Ericson Yachts with some by Islander, and the large custom sailing yachts. He also designed some of the radical yachts of the early seventies, and more recently the Hinckley water jet boats and the Bruce King Superyachts.

According to King, “We have always believed, where yachts are concerned, that technology and utility are only part of the story. To fulfill both the utility and technology requirements, and to do so in a manner encompassing as much visual satisfaction as possible, must be the goal of a skilled designer. Technology is fleeting; it is constantly changing. Aesthetic beauty is timeless, and it alone provides the motivation for preservation. It is hoped that as present technology gives way to the new, we will continue to be able to impart to our designs an appeal, both tangible and intangible, that will allow them to endure.”

Following is an excerpt from an article on the site boattest.com that was written about Whitehawk, a radical Bruce King-designed yacht built in 1978. The article does a nice job of explaining many of the features that set his boats apart from others, especially at that time.

Whitehawk was built in 1978 to a Bruce King design. King was a hot yacht designer in that era and was most famous for the line of Ericson fiberglass cruiser/racer sailboats which he had designed. Whitehawk was built in Rockland, Maine, at Lees Boat-shop by O’Lie Neilson, and at the time was the largest vessel ever built with the West System product using the cold molding process. West System was in its infancy. In fact, Whitehawk was one of the largest boats built in America in that decade of any material and preceded the era of megayachts by a few years.

Origins of her Fame

Because she was so large, and because she was built all of wood in an age of fiberglass, she caught the eye and imagination of the boating press, and a number of articles were written about her. Month after month, the yachting magazines chronicled her build progress until her launch in 1978. As a result, generations of yachtsmen have followed her ever since, and she is one of the most famous sailing yachts in America.

Genuine Tree Wood

She was designed like a classic wooden yacht with all of the brightwork and luxury details that would have pleased the Astors, Morgans, or Vanderbilts. On deck and below she looked and was built very much like yachts or yore. But her hull was different. It was built with a new process of cold molding that lightened the boat somewhat and made her more seaworthy at the same time. This process was popularized by the Gougeon Brothers and their development of the West System of epoxy/wood construction in Whitehawk was the proof of concept.

Rather than being built in the conventional manner of planks — that had to be caulked and nailed to heavy frames every few feet or so — cold molding involves strips of epoxy saturated wood laid over a jig that formed the hull’s shape. The epoxy not only glued the wood together, but it also created an impenetrable barrier to water. It was a radical idea at the time, but it turned out to be a good one and the West System continues to be a popular method of wood construction.

Topside Finish

Multilayer-planked cold molding with epoxy eliminated the need for many frames, which lightened the boat and also made her hull more puncture-resistant. With the elimination of most frames, more livable room was created inside of her 20’6” (6.25 m) beam. Her exterior surface was faired and then painted. In one of her recent refits, her hull was covered in Alexseal, a premium polyurethane topcoat technology that employs UV absorbers. The result is a glass-like finish with high gloss. We had the opportunity to inspect her hull from the waterline to her rail both from the ship’s tender and when swimming around her and can report that her topside finish is flawless.

Her Keel and Centerboard

Whitehawk draws 7’6” (2.28 m) which allows her to sail into many places where a sailboat of this size might not be able to enter, thanks to her stainless-steel centerboard. It increases her draft to 15’ (4.57 m) and improves her performance to windward. The hydraulic centerboard has holes in the bottom, so it fills with water when deployed. The combination of her cold molded hull and her centerboard make her relatively fast off the wind, and while she is by no means a down-wind sled like a Bruce Farr design, she is nevertheless competitive on the classic yacht regattas that she enters most years at venues from Antigua to Nantucket.

Built for Offshore Cruising

She displaces something on the order of 82 tons, which makes her a substantial yacht, and means that it takes a bit of wind to move her briskly. This makes her ideal for offshore work and, indeed, on her delivery last winter from Newport, Rhode Island, to Antigua, she saw winds up to 35 knots in the north Atlantic and a speedy passage south. During our own sail south of Antigua, she handled winds from 15 to 25 knots (30 knots in squalls) on a close reach with ease, and we recorded speeds up to 11.3 knots. Between the islands, seas often grew from four to six feet and Whitehawk rode over them in comfort – something that can only be enjoyed in a large, heavy sailboat with a 20’6” (6.25 m) beam.

49m yacht Asteria in motion ice

Owner's logbook: the upcoming European adventures for Asteria and King Benji

Every month, superyacht owners reveal where they are in the world and share their future plans. This month, BOAT speaks to an owner about a new-build project with zero regrets and an owner who is lucky enough to do once-in-a-lifetime cruising twice...

Owner of Asteria

Length: 49m Year: 1970 Location: Norway

What have you got planned for this summer? We’re heading up to Norway, starting in Stavanger and we’re going to keep going north, up to the Lofoten Islands and ultimately Svalbard. My good friend Espen Øino , a native of Norway, has given us some amazing ideas of things to do in Norway. We love these kinds of latitudes.

We’ve done the west coast of Greenland and the entrance to the North West Passage in Asteria , and in January we went on Le Commandant Charcot passenger ship to Antarctica, which was incredible. So we’ve done a lot of these places, but never Norway and Svalbard, and we thought it’d be pretty cool to tick off the Antarctic and Arctic in the same year. We had been considering South East Asia this year, but we didn’t feel like sending the boat through the Suez and down into the Gulf of Aden, which has become a lot riskier lately.

Tell us more about Le Commandant Charcot ... It’s the most amazing boat in the world. It’s a true state-of-the-art ice-breaker and is only three years old. It can plough through two metres of pack ice! I’d thoroughly recommend it. The amenities on board are amazing. This was a kind of research trip so we were able to visit some very remote places such as the Larsen B ice shelf, which is uncharted territory.

What draws you to these places? I feel like we only have a few years left to visit these places before they disappear, or it’ll be forbidden to go there. My boys are eight and 10, so I want to do it now and show it to my kids. I don’t want to spend all summer in the Med – it doesn’t appeal. We did spend a lot of time in Greece last year and had a wonderful time there exploring the villages and different landscapes, but I barely saw a single fish. The wrecks are fun to dive, but there’s no wildlife left beneath the water.

What are your longer range plans? We would love to go back to the South Pacific. We spent three or four years there with Asteria and loved it. Cocos Island is incredible; we loved Polynesia. My favourite spot was the southern part of Fakarava, an atoll in the west of the Tuamotu Islands. I also want to go back to Vanuatu. These are once-in-a-lifetime places, so we’re very lucky to get the opportunity to go back. And there aren’t many boats. It’s a huge commitment to send your boat there, and if you do, you really need to spend a few years there. It makes no sense otherwise.

Do you take guides with you? Not always. We will have someone with us in Svalbard, but we’ll be following Espen’s plan up the coast of Norway. We might engage some guides for shore excursions. When we dive, we always have a guide, as that way  you guarantee you get the best from the experience. We can’t wait to get going on this trip. But I should mention that we have some availability on our luxury charter yacht in July in Norway, if anyone would like to spend some time on one of the world’s most capable explorers!

Josh Golder

Yacht: King Benji Length: 46.7m Year: 2024 Location: South of France

What’s on the agenda for your first summer with the boat? We’ll head to Croatia and Montenegro. We also want to visit Albania, as we’ve never been there but hear it’s the new up-and-coming hotspot. I love those Adriatic islands. At the end of the season we’ll probably head back west and across to the Caribbean but stop off at Madeira on the way.

You’ve only been on the boat a few weeks, but have you got a favourite spot on board? I love the breakfast bar next to the open galley. There’s a huge window right next to the table, so we can eat informally and watch the world go by. I love interacting with the chef and seeing what he’s preparing. We’re also spending a lot of time in the main saloon.

Is there anything you would have done differently? In almost every project I’ve ever been involved with, I’ve always come to the end and thought there was something I should have done differently. But with King Benji , I can’t think of a single thing. There’s a few little cosmetic items, like the handles of the cupboards, but as far as the layout and design are concerned, the boat has exceeded all expectations. We went into such detail in the preparation phase that this doesn’t surprise me – we built a 1:1 mock-up of the interior to make sure we got exactly what we wanted.

What were the project’s absolute prerequisites? Seamless floors was a massive one for me. I hate it when you have a lip or sill between indoor and outdoor areas. I just feel like it ruins the connection. I wanted a really easy transition between the spaces. I also wanted to make sure there was no wasted space – there is nowhere on board where you think, “Oh, we already have this.” But really the whole project emanated from the big aft deck. We can carry a 12-metre Nor-Tech chase boat, jet skis and all the other toys. It all stemmed from there.

You were looking to buy 45-metre Big Fish before embarking on a new build. Are you glad you didn’t? I am very glad we didn’t succeed in buying Big Fish because I would never have known how fun a new-build project can be – putting the team together and collectively creating something totally new that’s never been seen before. I think we’ve moved the explorer game on.

What are your long-range plans with the boat? I don’t really think long term. The truth is, we could do anything with this boat. It really just depends on how we’re feeling. I would like to go to Alaska with her, but that’s as far as that thinking has gone! I would like to build a bigger series of these boats, incorporating everything we’ve learned. But right now, having no plan is the plan.
