Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race Gets Underway Friday, April 26

The 76th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race gets underway on Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m. off of the Balboa Pier. Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the Balboa Pier and nearby beaches to catch a glimpse of the boats as they set sail for Baja California.

A multitude of racers and 145 boats that keep N2E a Southern California yacht racing favorite will take to the course bound for the Hotel Coral and Marina in Ensenada.

Race organizers, the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, will be celebrating before the start as it welcomes Mike Whalen’s Ramble On, for his 50th running of the iconic yacht race. The veteran has raced on eight of his own boats and crewed for others on just as many. They have varied in size, from 30 to 44 feet, and sailed in several classes, including ORCA with a not-so-fast catamaran.

He has been sailing Ramble On, his Beneteau 44.7 for just 2 years. It will be one of the 23 Beneteaus competing. Although he won a class trophy quite some time ago, he reports that they usually finish in the middle of the fleet.

“I just enjoy the sport – really enjoy sailing and racing,” said Whalen. After replacing a main sail (sadly lost in the Cabo race) he and his Shoreline Yacht Club crew are hopeful of a better finish this year.

Three other skippers will be sailing N2E for 40 years or more. Another three have sailed for more than 30 years, while a dozen have clocked over 20 finishes.

“We’re very excited to see the fleet grow this year to over 145 boats,” said NOSA Commodore Phil Herzfeld. “It’s also exciting to see 35 first-time owners competing in both the PHRF and Cruising fleets.”

Bernt Helgaas of Wayzata, Minnesota, and his Norseman 447 Andreas is one of those excited first-timers. Helgaas bought the 1981 Norseman berthed in San Diego and has been refitting it for the past couple of years. Although made for ocean crossings, the heavy cruising boat needed a lot of TLC before it ventured outside the harbor.

Now, with new electronics, navigation systems, plumbing, and rigging, Andreas is about to start her new life as a race boat. “N2E is going to be a good shakedown for the boat and the crew,” Helgaas said. After N2E will be other long-distance races like the SoCal 300, and eventually Transpac.

Returning again and again and again in hopes of a repeat of last year’s three-trophy win is Rich Festa’s Groundhog Day. Sailing in the always-competitive maxi-class, the Rogers46 crossed the finish line at N2E 75 in 17hr 36mn 13s. They were two hours and 34 minutes faster than the closest class competitors.

The 75th race saw better-than-expected winds at the start, but dropped overnight, making for very close racing by morning’s light. Choices made by the skippers and navigators meant the difference between winning – or not – would come down to a matter of seconds in some classes.

Skippers for this year’s race are starting to track weather systems and chart expected conditions. They will be making strategic plans to maximize the wind or make the best of them.

Only one thing is for certain; N2E continues to be a competitive and fun race that offers weekend and competitive sailors the chance to sail to Mexico and back in a weekend.

NOSA and its nearly 40-person team of volunteers will present more than 30 trophies on Sunday, April 29.

The 17 sailors who chose the shorter course to San Diego will celebrate victories on Sunday at Silverlake Yacht Club.

The Newport Ocean Sailing Association, organizers of the historic Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, was founded in 1947 to promote ocean racing off Newport Beach. The first 125-nautical mile race sailed on April 23, 1948, into the small fishing village of Ensenada, Mexico. Mrs. Denny Barr claimed the top prize for skippering Mickey, a 46-foot sloop to best overall corrected time.

With an emphasis on camaraderie and competition, the N2E quickly attracted thousands of racers, becoming an event where fun-seeking novices could race alongside celebrities and world-class sailors.

International sailing competition comes to SF Bay, bringing economic boost

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Thousands of people are converging on San Francisco this weekend to watch giant high-tech sailboats from around the world race on the bay at super high speeds. The United States Sail Grand Prix is returning to the Bay Area for its third year at a time when local tourism officials say it's needed most.

If you have a need for speed, check out the adrenaline pumping sailboat race on the bay, known as SailGP. It's where 50-foot catamarans or 'F50s' almost fly across the water, so close to shore.

"It amazing to watch these hydro foiling rocket ships, which hit 60 mph," said SailGP's Laura Muma.

This weekend, the SailGP season three grand final is matching nine sailing teams from around the world.

"It's the Super Bowl of our league. Stakes are high and competition at the highest level," said Mac Agnese from Team USA.

"This is one of the most knowledgeable cities for sailing and racing. All teams love coming back, especially those who were here for America's Cup. In many ways, it's a homecoming," Muma said.

Thousands of sailing enthusiasts are coming to the Marina Green to watch.

"The commentary is excellent. The vibe is excellent. We're getting into sailing. It's an exciting time for the sport," said Erwin Naido from Toronto.

The event comes at a crucial time -- when SF is trying to revive tourism -- post-pandemic.

"San Francisco is still struggling to recover from pre-pandemic levels of tourism, is off 25% of the number of visitors who come here. Business travel is down. People are not working in their offices, so events like this really make a difference, because they bring people into town," said Joe D'Allesandro, SF Travel president and CEO. .

The economic boost is welcome, just like strong winds for the competing sailors.

The final race happens on Sunday. The winning team gets bragging rights and $1 Million dollars.

Season three of SailGP reaches its climax on the waters of San Francisco this weekend, with one team set to claim the US$1 million prize.

While each stop on the circuit usually consists of five fleet races and a podium race – in which the top three teams on the event leaderboard after the five races contest for the top spot – there is no podium race for the San Francisco event.

The event is decided by the fleet races. The standings at the end of the fifth race dictate where each team places for the event, and their points are added to the overall standings. Once those points are added, the top three teams on the overall ladder will return to the water to compete in a standalone shootout for the season title.

So, it is the same format as every other event, but rather than the top three teams for the event going in to contest an event title in the last race of the weekend, the top three teams overall will contest the season title instead.

Heading into the final event of the season, Australia – the two-time defending SailGP champions – holds a big lead at the top of the table, and only an unsailable vessel can prevent them from contesting the three-way shootout.

The Kiwis sit second, 11 points behind Australia. On 73 points, they sit four above France and five above Great Britain. With 10 points being awarded to the event winner (the team at the top of the leaderboard after five fleet races) and descending in value, with the ninth-placed team getting two, the Kiwis do have some work to do to ensure they are in the final race, but should feel confident about their position.

It likely shapes up as a five-race series between France and Great Britain to decide who the final team in the US$1m race will be. A tiebreaker for SailGP’s season leaderboard will mean the team who performed best in the most recent event goes ahead, which could be a factor in San Francisco.

How have the Kiwi crew sailed this season?

After a heavily disrupted debut in season two, the Kiwis’ sophomore outing has seen drastic improvements in their performance. Not only have they shown pace on the one-design F50 foiling catamaran, but they have also been consistent onboard.

Likely aided by the fact that almost everyone in the team is also involved with Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup campaign, the group has made the most of their time together and become one of the fleet’s best units.

The Kiwis have won more races than any other team this season with 16; Australia are the closest team with 11. Both teams have won three events each. However, Australia hold a commanding lead in the standings as New Zealand were twice docked points for on-water incidents – losing two season points at each of the Dubai and Singapore stops.

The New Zealanders bring a settled group into San Francisco, with Peter Burling at the helm, Blair Tuke on wing trimming duties, Liv Mackay in the strategist role, Andy Maloney as the flight controller, and Josh Junior, Marcus Hansen and Louis Sinclair providing the power on the grinding pedestals.

Heading into this weekend’s season finale, Burling said a lot had changed for the team since last season’s event in San Francisco.

“Last year in San Fran, we had effectively decided we’d be better off putting our efforts into trying to improve the team rather than trying to win a particular event.

“It’s a pretty unique race format where you get such a limited training time that essentially every time you change something significant with how you’re operating the boat, it takes a lot of time to get back to where you were. A lot of the time, you’re going backwards to hopefully go further forwards in the long term.

“This time around, we’ve got a steady line-up, we’re really happy with how we’ve been sailing the boat; just making some minor tweaks and just looking forward to trying to put together the best performance we can.”

Equation for the Kiwis to confirm their place in the Grand Final race

If New Zealand finish ninth (75 total season points): France would overtake them by finishing fifth or higher; Great Britain would do so finishing fourth or higher.

Eighth: France would overtake them by finishing fourth or higher; Great Britain third.

Seventh: France would overtake them by finishing third or higher; Great Britain would do so with a top-two finish.

Sixth: France would overtake them by finishing in the top two; Great Britain would need to be the top team after the five fleet races to surpass the Kiwis.

Fifth: France would overtake them with an event win; Great Britain would be unable to do so.

Fourth: The Kiwis would finish the season in second place regardless of where any other team finished the San Francisco event and would go on to the final race.

How to watch

SailGP’s final event of the season will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 2 and on the Sky Sport Now app from 9.30am on Sunday (the first three fleet races) and Monday (two fleet races and the stand-alone Grand Final race). The racing will also be streaming live on the SailGP YouTube channel.

St. Pete To Shine Again

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club and the western shore of Florida’s Tampa Bay will be the epicenter of sailboat racing this weekend when more than 240 teams across 13 one-design classes and five handicap-racing fleets get races started for the first event of the national Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg . Now well into its third decade, the regatta will also mark 10 years with its title sponsor.

The Sunshine City’s motto is that St. Pete is “Always in Season,” and that is certainly the enticement for many teams traveling in from colder climes with the promise of warm breezes, stiff competition and a nightlife that’s never been more vibrant.

One such northerner is David Mierzwa, of Lake Placid, New York, who on Tuesday was behind the wheel and racing to get south of a big storm burying the mid-Atlantic and Northeast in snow and ice. Behind him was bitter cold, but ahead of him was warmth and the anticipation of his first Melges 24 Midwinter Championship at the regatta.

As a newbie to the demanding Melges 24, Mierzwa says his primary goal is to “stay out of everybody’s way,” but ultimately, he and his teammates are on a mission to learn the nuances of this high-performance keelboat from his peers.

“We’re going so we can hunt for tips, tricks and whatever makes us better,” Mierzwa says. “It’s about having the opportunity to do an event of this caliber with likeminded people, because while sailing is the goal, being surrounded by others that do the same sport is sometimes better than the sport itself.”

As the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta in St. Petersburg will be his team’s first major event, he recognizes they don’t have a high enough racing pedigree to vie for the Midwinter Championship title—yet. “The only way we can get to that point is to go out there and race,” he says.

And race they will, from early Friday morning through late Sunday, alongside several other one-design classes that are the regulars of this February classic, including the S2 7.9s and the Hobie 33s , both of which will also be vying for their midwinter championship titles. 

The S2s have the returning champions of Tom and Mary Bryant’s “Team Matros” from Holland, Michigan, which won seven of eight races in 2023 to earn their berth at the Helly Hansen Sailing World Caribbean Championship last October. At each of the series’ five events one team is selected to compete in the British Virgin Islands for the overall season title.

The Hobie 33s also have their champions returning to defend— Craig and Deborah Wilusz’s “Hoof Hearted”—but this year there’s a new and unknown challenger from Waxhaw, North Carolina, and it’s a boat with a nefarious name: “Bad Bunny.” Its new owner, Sean Rhone, says he’s looking forward to meeting and racing with other Hobie 33 owners for the first time and “taking a peek under their hoods.”

Rhone has been primarily racing his Hobie 33 in singlehanded events and low-key races on North Carolina’s Lake Norman, and like Mierzwa, he’s not sure how well he’ll fare, especially with a five-person team that’s been assembled by way of social media message boards, and whom he’s never met.

“It’s cold in Charlotte,” Rhone says, “and I’m getting tired of the cold weather, so when I saw that the fleet was having its midwinters in St. Petersburg, I thought it would be nice to go and race against some other Hobie 33s for once.”

Mierzwa and Rhone may pass each other on an interstate somewhere on the way to St. Pete, along with a sizable Canadian contingent of Contender dinghy sailors making their annual pilgrimage from across the northern border. The 16-foot Contender, which its loyalists claim to be “The Sexiest Singlehander in the World ” was introduced in 1969 and continues to be popular internationally, as well as in Tampa thanks to local sailmaker Ethan Bixby. Bixby, a champion of many classes, continues to rally the troops to the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta and the fleet has doubled for this year’s gathering. Bixby, who won all races last year, will of course be among the 11 trapezing sailors.

Sharing the same racecourse will be eight teams racing the doublehanded Windmill class, which is new to the regatta lineup, but another cult classic sparked in the 1950s. Class measurer Pat Huntley, of Erie, Pennsylvania, is now a decade into Windmill racing, and says he’s eager to enjoy some fast sailing in St. Pete and good times with his fellow Windmillers. “It’s such a fun and cool group,” Huntley says. “And the Windmill is such a bad-ass skinny and fast boat. It can handle the chop easily and is really fast.” 

Five teams racing in the 20-foot Flying Dutchman class (first built in 1951) will hail from California to Tennessee and hosted by local FD ace, Lin Robson, the 2023 class winner. The doublehanded bonanza, however, will be the Melges 15 class, which will feature an impressive 31 teams, nearly double from 2023. The new one-design class has exploded in popularity across the country since its introduction three years ago, and midwinter regattas elsewhere in Florida have maxed out at nearly 100 boats.

Among the Melges 15 ranks in St. Petersburg will be New York’s Iris Vogel, who has traditionally raced the regatta with her larger one-design keelboats over the years (a Soverel 33 and a J/88, both named “Deviation”). Vogel is now enjoying the challenge of big-fleet racing and exhilarating downwind sailing.

Racing with her partner, Tim Longo, Vogel helms and Longo handles the front of the boat, and over the past year they’ve been working their way up the scoreboard, but have a long way to go to the top. “This is a totally new thing to sail in such a big fleet,” Vogel says. “J/88 events typically get a dozen boats at best, and the racing is much slower paced. The tactics are completely different and boats are fast downwind so it’s a ton of fun, but we are still learning a different style of racing. Having the smaller fleet [at the Helly Hansen Regatta] will give us a chance to work on our boatspeed.”

While the out-of-town armada is significant, local sailors look forward to the regatta every year, especially Tampa Bay’s PHRF sailors who’ve made the event a key fixture in their Suncoast Boat of the Year Series. For these fleets, which now comprise the regatta’s largest group with 38 entries across four divisions (Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Racer-Cruiser and Cruising) organizers have added two days of long-course racing over the weekend. Depending on the wind strength and direction of the day, the race committee will plot a daylong course to test each team’s navigational and sailing skills, as well as their perseverance and desire to be first to the dock and first to the yacht club bar.

Local sailor Tim Landt, who has been an active sailor on the Tampa Bay waterfront for decades, is a registered competitor in the Cruising division in his new-to-him Nightwind 35, “Charisma.” He’s excited to see the regatta’s blossoming distance-race fleet and says the local growth and interest in racing older-generation yachts is good for the sport and for the Tampa Bay racing scene.

But it’s not all classic plastics in the distance fleet. In the Racer-Cruiser division will be the sparkling new Neo 43, owned by Ken Mungan of nearby Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda, Florida. Mungan purchased his sleek Italian-built 43-footer in 2022 with big plans to take on a few of the sport’s marque distance races, and local events like the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta offer he and his team an opportunity to learn the boat in a racing environment.

“When I turned 40 I needed a hobby and took up sailing,” Munger says. “I’m always trying new things and got into racing 2019. I did the Melges 24 for a while, but the Neo, because it’s a shallow-draft boat, allows me to do more local long-distance racing and we’re learning a lot.”

For this weekend’s regatta, Munger has more crew lined up than there are roles on the boat, but that’s fine with him. “We’re going to be overloaded, and I am anticipating a level of skill and organization that we don’t quite have yet,” he admits. “We’ll have two coaches and a new set of racing jibs that will be used for the first time, so it will be fun, and I’m looking forward to it.”

While the long-course racers are making their way around the bay, closer to shore, will be the multihulls: the high-tech A Class Catamarans , which have two divisions (Classic and Foiling) totaling 33 competitors, and the Weta Trimarans , with a smaller contingent from years past, return with nine boats, and among them is two-time defending champion and local Pete Merrifield looking for a three-peat.

         The iconic Lightning Class is one of the regatta’s largest one-design fleets, with 25 boats, five of which will be raced by members of the Starck family with a few world champions among them. Hall of Famer, Augie Diaz, of Miami, and Ched Proctor, of Southport, Connecticut, both world champions as well, always add to the high level of racing and camaradarie Lightning sailors enjoy all winter. The Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta in St. Petersburg is a key warm-up event for the Lightning class’s hotly-contested two-regatta Southern Circuit with March events in St. Pete and Miami.

Sharing one racing circle immediately off the city front will be the 29-boat J/70 fleet and a reemergent J/24 fleet, both of which will no doubt provide quality racing for both professional and amateur sailors. The same will be true for the ever-competitive ORC fleet, with 11 entries, which will be racing further south. Bill and Jackie Baxter’s J/111 “Fireball,” from Stamford, Connecticut, which has won all of its events this winter will return to defend its 2023 ORC title, which it earned with ease, winning seven of eight races.

Great Britain Sail Grand Prix at Plymouth – Live

The Great Britain Sail Grand Prix at Plymouth is this weekend 30 and 31 July.

Five fleet races will be contested across Saturday and Sunday before the three boat match race final on Sunday to decide the overall winner.

Ben Ainslie is racing on home waters for the first time with his Great Britain SailGP team. And will be looking for his first event win since over a year ago in Bermuda.

With more boats and more events for Season 3, SailGP has brought in tougher penalties to encourage teams to avoid contact during racing, with the safety of athletes on board and limiting damage to the F50s a top priority.

Based on the nature of the contact and the severity of damage caused, teams can lose both race points and overall season points.

  How the Event Works:

Events take place across two days, with six races scheduled for each Sail Grand Prix; five Fleet races and The Final.

The first day includes three fleet races, while the second day has the other two fleet races and ends with The Final – the last race of the event.

The last race of each SailGP event is The Final – a race in which the three highest ranked teams in the event leaderboard face off to be crowned event champions.

‘Everyday people’ set sail from Seattle for around-the-world race

Winds died to 2 to 3 mph from the south-southwest and Elliott Bay was glass calm. Not ideal for sailing, but not a storm either.

Those were the conditions at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina as 11 sailing teams from around the world set off Friday in 70-foot ocean racing yachts for the seventh leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The teams, each with 20 to 24 people, will traverse 7,200 miles, from Seattle to Panama and on to Washington, D.C.

Organizers say the event trains “everyday people to become ocean racers.”

Each participant must complete four weeks of intense training before taking part in one or all eight stages of the circumnavigation. As for the crew, 30% of them, who hail from 55 nations, have never been on a sailboat before readying for this race.

So far, the teams have raced over 20,000 nautical miles. The event started in Portsmouth, England, on Sept 3. After the race reaches D.C., it’s on to Scotland then back to Portsmouth on July 27, some 11 months after they departed. The full around-the-world challenge is 40,000 nautical miles.

Della Parsons, crew recruitment director for Clipper Ventures, did a presentation Wednesday in Seattle meant to inspire people to give the adventure a try. As she showed video from a previous race that included huge waves and difficult conditions, she said “You could see people’s eyes widening and thinking, ‘This is ridiculous. I could never do that.’ And then I said to them at the end of the video, ‘I know you’re thinking that but you have to remember all of the people that you’ve just seen on this video are just like you. Two years before that they were also sitting in a presentation thinking ‘this is ridiculous.’ And now look at them. They’ve just really achieved something remarkable.”

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: newport to ensenada race begins this weekend.

Race organizers, the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, announced that four skippers will mark at least 40 years sailing the N2E. Another three have sailed for more than 30 years, while a dozen have clocked more than 20 finishes.

“We’re very excited to see the fleet grow this year to over 145 boats,” said NOSA Commodore Phil Herzfeld. “It’s also exciting to see 35 first-time owners competing.”

One of the first timers is Long Beach’s own Bryce Cullinane, sailing his cruising catamaran, a Lagoon 42, with a crew of seven – including his father and cousin. His goal is to have fun and finish.

“The boat is made for comfort, not racing,” Cullinane said, “but we recently picked up a used spinnaker (sail) at Minnie’s in Newport and bought a brand-new code zero (sail), which has greatly improved (the yacht’s) performance. Most of us have never done an overnight passage, so this will be an adventure.”

The Long Beach Yacht Club member shared that the team has done a number of training sails in the last few weeks.

“We’ve been practicing the chaotic process of taking Code Zero in and simultaneously launching the Spinnaker,” he said.

Like many of the competitors, he has a close eye on the weather.

“The wind forecast, right now, is for over 20 knots of wind during the middle of the night, so we will have to be on the top of our game,” Cullinane said. “The wind tends to die off just outside of Ensenada, so my major concern is getting down to Ensenada, with land in sight, but not enough wind to finish.”

Other entries include two skippers from Oregon, two from Mexico, one from Arizona, one from Ontario, Canada – and multiple-time-winning yacht Taniwha, owned by Utah’s Jerry Fiat.

The Taniwha, a 32-foot Ferrier yacht, will return in hopes of back-to-back Ocean Racing Catamaran Association-class wins.

Along with Fiat, the boat will be crewed by Pete Melvin, Mat Bryant and Frank Dryer. The highly experienced crew hopes to claim the elusive “Overall Corrected” honors.

NOSA and its nearly 40-person team of volunteers will present more than 30 trophies on Sunday, April 29. The 17 sailors who chose the shorter course to San Diego will celebrate victories on Sunday at Silverlake Yacht Club.

Ship naming

The 135,000 gross ton ship Carnival Firenze had its naming celebration on Wednesday, April 24, in Long Beach.

Built in 2020, the Carnival Firenze – formerly the Costa Firenze – can accommodate more than 5,000 guests and will sail year-round from Long Beach, offering three- to seven-day Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line named actor Jonathan Bennett as the ship’s godfather. Carnival Firenze is inspired by the city of Florence, Italy, making it the second Carnival ship to sail with the “Carnival Fun Italian Style” theme.

You might recognize Bennett from the big screen (“Mean Girls”), the small screen (various Hallmark Channel productions) and Broadway (“Spamalot”).

Carnival operations and their passengers have an enormous economic impact on the city, supporting the Queen Mary, downtown and our authentic neighborhood marketplace areas. Carnival is an important part of our community.  The Carnival Firenze will add both fun and sophistication to its already full cruise offerings.

“The City of Long Beach could not be more excited about Carnival hosting its second Vista Class ship at the beautiful and growing Long Beach Cruise Terminal,” said Bo Martinez, the city’s director of economic development. “We are proud of our long term relationship with Carnival and that we have become the busiest single terminal in the country.”

The 1,061-foot ship leaves on its first sailing from Long Beach on Thursday, April 25.

Scotts beam on Sunday

Sunday was a good day to be Scott Dixon.

Dixon “The Iceman” used a fuel-saving strategy to win the 49th edition of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Dixon “The Mainman” – commodore of the Long Beach Yacht Club – was returning from Catalina with friends when he got the call that not only had his name twin Scott Dixon won the GPLB, but that it was looking like LBYC’s Scott “Kiwiman” Dickson was going to take top honors in the Ficker Cup match race, a qualifier for this week’s Congressional Cup.

Years earlier, media consultant Kevin Wilkinson, who has advised both the GPLB and LBYC, anticipated this day. Both the two-time GPLB winner and the 14-time Ficker Cup winner hail from Auckland, New Zealand, and are about the same age – so Wilkinson thought it would be a great photo to get the two together. The fact that LBYC’s 2024 Commodore is also named Scott Dixon made the story sweeter.

Commodore Dixon went full throttle on Sunday to reach Rainbow Harbor and get in a photo with the Iceman. The Chip Ganassi team, the Committee of 300 media volunteers, photographer Howard Freshman, and GPLB’s media guru Chris Esslinger were all standing by to make the Dixon-Dixon-Dickson photo moment happen.

But ticket checkers on Shoreline Drive stayed true to their job – and despite having identification showing he had the same name as the Grand Prix winner, the commodore couldn’t enter.

About the same time, sailor Scotty Dickson went 12 and 2 in the Ficker Cup’s double round robin, dropping only one match in the semifinals against Australia’s Cole Tapper. Dickson went on to sweep the finals against another New Zealand skipper, Megan Thomson.

By then, race car driver Dixon had left to shower off the champagne residue. The photo envisioned by Wilkinson years ago almost happened – but not quite.

The top-three Ficker Cup skippers received invites to Congressional Cup:  Dickson, Megan Thomson and Cole Tapper.

Congressional Cup racing started on Wednesday ,April 24, and will continue until Sunday. Spectators can watch the Congressional Cup races live for free from Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier starting daily at 11:30 a.m. each day and online at thecongressionalcup.com .

The 2024 Star World Championship Comes to San Diego this September

San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) is excited to invite members of the International Star Class to compete at the Star World Championship in San Diego, CA with racing from September 8-13, 2024. SDYC has previously been host to the regatta in 2013, 1994, 1973, 1969, 1961, 1958, 1940, and 1938, making 2024 our 9th edition. Our team consisted of Rebecca McElvain as skipper, with Julie Mitchell on main and tactics, and Erika Barth on jib and bow.

Etchells West Coast Spring Series Returns in 2024 with Exciting Lineup of Regattas

The Etchells West Coast Spring Series is back and better than ever for the 2024 season, promising a thrilling series of regattas. San Diego Yacht Club, in collaboration with the local Etchells Fleet 13, cordially invites sailors from near and far to participate in this prestigious sailing event on the challenging Coronado Roads course. The Series comprises four regattas, one of which may be used as a throw-out in the final scoring of the Series.

4:43pm - And that's the end of the day's racing, before it even begins. The racing window has closed and Mother Nature has carried the honours.

Surely tomorrow, we'll be better prepared... such a shame for the record paying crowd, who go home without seeing any racing.

4:33pm - Still no racing, due to "mammals on course", which is a little embarrassing. The same thing happened last year and dolphins are quite common in this area, so it wouldn't have takent much foresight to make sure they had something to do somewhere else today.

The opening race has been delayed, after a dolphin was sighted on the course. SailGP is known for its respect for the ocean and nature, so wellbeing of wildlife comes before racing.

2:57pm - Great Britain have been docked points - both from the NZ regatta and the season standings - after a training incident with Spain.

The Brits collided with the Spanish boat during the third practice race on Friday and the penalty may have ended their chances of reaching the series final at San Francisco.

"We’re licking wounds from that issue," said GBR driver Giles Scott. "It's really, really frustrating, but tomorrow's a new day - we'll come out swinging and see what the weekend's got."

The British now sit seventh overall, 11 points out of the top-three cutoff for the final.

Kia ora, good afternoon and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of NZ Sail Grand Prix at Christchurch's picturesque Lyttelton Harbour.

Last year saw the international sailing circuit visit the South Island for the first time and many of the participants described the stopover as the best of the year.

This event was scheduled for Auckland, but unavailability of suitable venues forced organisers to return to Lyttelton, which isn't a bad back-up option.

The home team were pipped by Kiwi skipper Phil Robertson and his Canadian crew in 2023, but the newly branded 'Black Foils' are determined to take honours this weekend, after back-to-back success at Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Driver Peter Burling wans't at the wheel for the last regatta at Sydney, while he was on babywatch, so he'll chase a hattrick of victories at Christchurch.

Saturday's racing will consist of three fleet races, while Sunday will see two more, plus the three-boat final.

Canada's Kiwi skipper out to spoil homecoming party again at SailGP Christchurch

The black boat isn't the only one chasing a 'home' win at the New Zealand round of SailGP this weekend.

Last year, Kiwi Phil Robertson stole the show, when he drove his Canadian team to victory on Lyttelton Harbour.

Robertson is back in the country for the first time since the famous win and his sights set on a repeat effort this weekend, but defending his title isn't the only reason to come home.  

"It's pretty hard to compete with New Zealand coffee around the world," Robertson told Newshub. 

As it turns out, that rule applies to most beverages - including the alcoholic variety.

"I definitely like the local craft breweries and get into it... but I still love a Speights," he joked.

Come Sunday, he'll hope those beers will be celebratory. Last year, he helped Canada achieve their only event win to date, spoiling the party for local hero Peter Burling and the NZ boat.

"That was up there," he reflected. "That was massive."

Not everything about being home is bright and sunny.  

"It's cold here, but the colder air brings a denser air, so you go faster," he noted.

The ever-comical Robertson has his own way of describing windy conditions at the last event in Sydney.

"You've got to bring your brown undies and buckle up, because it's going to be a wild ride," he said.

Robertson confirms those brown undies have been included in his luggage this weekend.

"I packed my brown undies, but hopefully I won't need them, because I love the speed."

That should be music to the ears of a record 22,0000 spectators who will make this weekend the world's largest ever ticketed sailing event.  

"An event like this here in Christchurch, I'm really hoping it inspires the local kids down here to get into it, because it's a wicked sport and there's so many opportunities around the world," he said.

If Robertson can go back-to-back for Canada, there would be no better example set.

1200 - 1600: Starting Line Party

Doors will open for spectators at Fort Adams State Park at noon with music from The Ravers. Food trucks, the Regatta Bar featuring Goslings Rum and Whalers Beer and New England Fare, and Lawn Games will be open. Helly Hansen and TeamOne Newport will have retail tents open for business, and other sponsors will be there to welcome you as well.

1400-1600: Starting Line Live Show

Delivering an immersive viewing experience never done before. Expert commentary with North Sails' Ken Read and Jesse Fielding, and captivating aerial footage will bring the excitement of the start close-up for those onsite and online. The live stream of the Starting Line Live Show will be on a giant screen in the park and streamed on bermudarace.com.

1400-1600: The Race Begins

The fleet is grouped into classes and starting groups that will cross the line off the western shore of Fort Adams every 10 minutes starting at 1400.

Everything you need to know about Victoria’s biggest yacht race happening this weekend

Victoria’s biggest yachting event is this weekend, taking place between May 27th and 28th with several categories allowing different types of vessels from all over the world to partake in the action. 

The Swiftsure lightship race is put on by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and has been since 1930. Historically, Cadboro Bay has been the launchpoint with the ships racing westward down the Juan de Fuca Strait, to Swiftsure Bank, which is around 30 kilometres off Cape Flattery at the mouth of the Strait. 

At Swiftsure Bank, there would traditionally be a lightship stationed which sailors knew about and it gave them a decently long distance race to compete in from Victoria. Lightships were essentially mobile lighthouses that were positioned near shoals to warn large vessels which  may run aground in the shallows. 

Present day, the race begins at Clover Point and finishes at the Ogden Point’s breakwater with the mid-way point still being at Swiftsure Bank.

Typically, since the last Swiftsure vessel that used to be used is now moored at Seattle’s National Historic Landmark at Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park, an off-duty Royal Canadian Navy vessel is utilized for the race as the mid-way point. 

This year, the Navy is unable to provide a ship, so the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) will be supplying the Swiftsure ship. 

In 1930, just six ships participated in that first year. Now, the race attracts hundreds of yachts and enthusiasts from across the globe. This year, 120 vessels are signed up to race in five different classes based on the type of vessel — 22 of those ships are RVYC vessels. 

The first group of vessels will begin racing at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 27th from Clover Point with the other four groups launching in 10 minute intervals afterward, so the last batch will be off by 10 a.m.

Spectators will be able to watch the 120 yachts of all shapes and sizes sail from Clover Point all along Dallas Road and along Greater Victoria’s southwestern shores until they disappear into the distance. 

The ships should start to come back around midnight on Sunday, May 28th and they will continue to come in through the morning and afternoon. 

Those wishing to watch the yachts return can gather at Ogden Point which is the finish line for the Swiftsure event. 

For those wishing to follow the racers’ progress online, there is a ship tracker on the Swiftsure website which will have every ship’s location tagged along with their names.

OVERVIEW: A flagship event in the calendar at Blackwater SC, Club Week offers a fun week of sailing, racing and socialising on the river with fleets ranging from Optimists to Fast Cruisers, and a packed social programme. The club also has its 125th Anniversary Regatta on Saturday 20 July.

BRANCASTER STAITHE SAILING WEEK

6-10 August, Brancaster Staithe SC, Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk

OVERVIEW: Brancaster Staithe Sailing Week is a multi-class open regatta with daily races at sea for Senior fleets and in the harbour for Junior fleets. Briefing is on Monday 5 August and there are social events during the week. Registration is online via the website.

BURNHAM WEEK

OVERVIEW:  A friendly competitive regatta with a colourful mix of cruisers, day boats and dinghies. There is a class for everyone whether IRC, local handicap, new to racing or experienced. One design classes are a welcoming and friendly group. A variety of courses keeps interest piqued and the race committee listens to competitors ensuring that needs are met throughout. 6-12 July, East Anglian Offshore Racing Association 

OVERVIEW: This year EAORA celebrates its 75th anniversary – and a memorable EAORA Week is planned to mark the occasion. It will start with the RORC East Coast Race from Harwich to Ostend (Belgium) on Saturday 6 July, followed by the Medway YC Cannonball Trophy race from Ostend to Breskens (Netherlands) the following day.

A series of shorter races from harbour to harbour within the Zeeland Delta will finish with a prizegiving party at Hellevoetsluis on Friday 12 July, leaving a clear weekend for the passage home. Traditionally some boats used the week as the delivery trip for a holiday in the Dutch inland waters.

Stopovers are yet to be finalised, but are expected to include Veere, Zierikzee, Sint Annaland, Willemstad and Hellevoetsluis – delightful historic towns with excellent facilities and plentiful restaurants. The silverware at the end of the week is very special too!

HORNING OPEN REGATTA WEEK

WHITSTABLE WEEK

OVERVIEW: Whitstable Week is a summer all-classes regatta for all ages and abilities. Whitstable is a great place to sail offering relatively sheltered sea sailing with easy beach launching and committee boat starts off the club. WYC is situated both on the beach and in the centre of town which has a huge choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. The ‘week’ now runs from Wednesday to Sunday which means fewer days holiday to take part in a full five days of racing, two races per day. OVERVIEW:  Dartmouth Royal Regatta is a family orientated regatta that offers competitive racing in Start Bay and the River Dart, with a wide range of activities for all the family, including a funfair and firework display on the Friday evening. The dinghy regattas start the week’s racing with the Juniors at RDYC 24-26 August and Moore Kingston Smith Financial Dinghies at Dittisham 24-27 August. The yacht regatta follows with the passage race from Brixham to Dartmouth on Tuesday 27 August, and racing in Start Bay 28-31 August. OVERVIEW:  Seven days of varied racing for over 20 classes ranging from IRC yachts to dinghies. Starting with a skippers’ briefing at the Royal Cornwall YC on Saturday 10 August. The regatta is hosted by six clubs starting with Helford River SC (11th) then visiting Mylor YC (12th), Restronguet SC (13th), Royal Cornwall YC (15th), St Mawes SC (16th) and Flushing SC (17th) for the final regatta and overall prizegiving. Multi class options for entry including classes for dinghies. Racing in the harbour, Carrick Roads or Falmouth Bay. Daily entries, a three-day series and seven-day entry all possible. The Port of Falmouth Sailing Association has held entry fees at 2023 prices. All entrants under 18 are FREE this year!

OVERVIEW:  Fleets ranging from rookies and beginners to asymmetric classes, also including the Solo Western Series Championships, GP14 Southern Area Championships, Phantom and OK open meetings. An excellent social venue with Saturday barbecue and some of the best sailing waters in the UK. Any class with more than six entries can have their own results and there is a team entry as well.

INSIDER TIP:  The tidal flows in Plymouth are affected by the two major rivers running into the Sound – look at tidal flow charts to see where there are back eddies.

CARDIGAN BAY REGATTA

Downs After Dark returns to Churchill Downs this weekend

Downs After Dark is making its comeback this weekend.

Check out the new paddock in the player above.

The night races will kick off on Saturday, May 18 with a special "Golf & Social" theme, perfectly on par with the PGA Championship weekend in Louisville.

Guests are encouraged to wear "golf chic." The event will also include golf simulators, golf contests, putting greens, golf trivia games and more.

As races take place, guests will be able to watch the 2024 Preakness on the Big Board.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. with band performances and races will begin at 6 p.m.

The last races is at 11:10 p.m.

The second Downs After Dark event will be on June 15 and will have a "Yacht Rock" theme.

While stage line ups have not yet been announced, guests will get to listen to yacht rock classics.

The event will also include a style contest, a roving photobooth and more.

PARIS — Louis Vuitton is in a Barcelona state of mind.

Ahead of its cruise show in the Mediterranean port city on May 23, the French luxury brand has unveiled a capsule collection for women and men in honor of sailing’s biggest event, the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona.

The sporty line, set to land in stores and online from July 18, includes ready-to-wear, bags and accessories blending house emblems with bold colors and nautical codes.

The luxury brand opened its first Spanish store in 1987 in Barcelona, and now counts two locations in the Catalan capital, in addition to six leather goods workshops in the region that employ more than 1,800 people.

Five years in the making, Project 821 is at the bleeding edge of marine innovation. Designed by British studio RWD, the vessel uses hydrogen to power both the propulsion system and hotel load to eliminate carbon emissions. The 290-footer is also the largest yacht built by Feadship to date, meaning it could easily hold the requisite fuel cells, battery banks, and hydrogen tanks.

For the unversed, fuel cells are a combustion-free way to generate electricity. The fuel cell turns hydrogen into electricity that can be used or stored in lithium-ion battery banks. The only emission is water vapor. The automotive and aerospace industries have already embraced fuel cells, but the marine sector had to overcome some design issues and safety regulations before incorporating the technology. How to store compressed liquid hydrogen below deck at -423.4 degrees Fahrenheit is one such hurdle Feadship had to overcome.

Hydrogen is light but must be held in large, cumbersome tanks. In fact, Feadship says it takes eight to 10 times more space to store the hydrogen than the equivalent in diesel fuel. In the case of Project 821, the yard added 13 feet to the vessel’s original length to accommodate a large tank that holds more than four tons of hydrogen, 16 compact fuel cells, and the vent stacks. Even a yacht of such proportions cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen to power a crossing, but there is enough to generate electricity for short trips and the hotel load. The fuel cell technology can provide an entire week’s worth of silent operation at anchor or allow the yacht to cruise emission-free at 10 knots for a short period.

In instances when pure hydrogen is not an option, MTU generators running on HVO biofuel will send power to the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives. As you might expect, the yacht features an advanced energy management system that helps reduce power usage onboard.

Project 821 is by no means short on luxury, either. Showcasing an elegant, modern silhouette, the behemoth offers five decks above the waterline and two below. It also has the most hull openings of any vessel in the Feadship fleet, with 14 balconies, five shell doors, and seven fold-out platforms.

Penned by GA, the elegant interior pairs a neutral palette with textured fabrics to create a luxe coastal vibe. The epic owner’s deck is equipped with two bedrooms, dual bathrooms, twin dressing rooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices with fireplaces, a living room, and an outdoor terrace with a Jacuzzi. The owner can then take a private elevator to the coffee corner and games area on the bridge deck, the library on the main deck, or the private dining room. In this way, Project 821 evokes a four-level townhouse by the sea.

Killer whales attack and sink 50-foot yacht in Strait of Gibraltar: Spanish officials

A pod of killer whales attacked and sunk a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and Morocco, officials confirmed to ABC News.

Two people were on board the vessel when the incident occurred Sunday at 9 a.m. local time, according to Spain's maritime authority.

The nearly 50-foot yacht, named The Alboran Cognac, was 15 miles from Cabo Espartel in Morocco when an unknown number of orcas began ramming it.

The couple alerted Spanish authorities and a rescue team arrived to extricate them from the vessel an hour after the attack, though officials were unable to salvage the sinking boat.

There have been approximately 700 orca attacks since 2020, according to GT Orca Atlantica, a conservation group, and officials believe there are more than 37 orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, separating Europe from Africa.

"During the summer and autumn of 2020, interaction events began to occur between several specimens of this species and vessels, mainly sailboats, both in the Strait of Gibraltar and in the waters of the Galician coast," according to Spanish government officials. "These interactions have ranged from persistent approaches to ships, to ramming the hull and rudder, causing various types of damage, which continue today."

It's unclear whyorcasattack boats, though experts hypothesize the marine mammals could be targeting vessels for sport or they feel threatened.

According to a study in Biological Conservation , a peer-reviewed journal, "sophisticated learning abilities" have been found to exist in orcas.

In June 2023, racing yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar had a close encounter with a pod oforcas, race officials said at the time.

Crew members aboard a rival pair of 65-foot yachts were on the final leg of The Ocean Race, a global sailing competition, when they reported being intercepted by killer whales as their boats approached the Strait of Gibraltar.

No fatalities were reported in the incident, according to officials.
