Dufour 44 first look: Space for sailing, sunbathing and socialising

The new Dufour 44 offers ample room for a lively living experience in harbour. And it sails well, too.

Yacht design never seems to stand still, including with the new Dufour 44.

Although Dufour’s last 40-something footer, the 430, was brand new in 2019, the lines are already beginning to look dated and a trifle pokey in comparison to the latest fashions.

The whole range is gradually being overhauled by Umberto Felci, the brand’s designer for the last quarter of a century; the boats with two digits, rather than three, are the new ones.

As with the Hanse 410 on the previous pages, internal volume is the name of the game, driven by vast bow sections and full-length bow chines.

Marina moving benefits with Dufour 44

I had a look at Dufour’s most recent launch, the 41, at last year’s Southampton Boat Show, and was struck by quite how marked these above-waterline flares are.

The waterline at rest remains narrow, but once sails are set, the boat will sit over onto these and benefit from the increased righting moment this powerful form stability generates.

It also allows yachts to get away with single rudders despite their vast beam, as the bow no longer dips down and the stern up when heeled, which is what drove boats of a generation or two ago to unanimously opt for twin rudders.

There’s plenty good to say about twin rudders, but Hanse , Dufour and Bavaria have all stuck with the single, relatively deep blade; it gives a more direct helming experience, aids manoeuvring in a marina, and presumably also keeps construction costs down.

Clearly, twin wheels are still a must to give proper visibility for the helmsman on either tack.

The other point of note is the vast windows in the moulded recesses in the hull topsides.

While not all of the black side panels are actually windows, it’s a bold look that should make below decks feel even more open.

Dufour, more than most, focuses on the living experience in harbour – huge cockpits with high soles and unobstructed views forwards, great access to the water, and the trademark grill and outdoor galley beneath the transom seats are all there.

So too is ample space for sunbathing in the cockpit and on deck.

That’s not to say the boat isn’t built for sailing though.

You may want to opt for the sprayhood in British waters, but bracing is provided in the cockpit by the single large table midships, and controls are led aft to the helm for easy handling.

Steering, sails, and stowage

The winches and clutches are slightly further forward than on some boats, so the helmsman will need to stretch a little to reach them, but this does mean that other crew can also get involved with the sailing, which some boats seem actively to preclude.

I’d have liked to see the lines atop to the coamings hidden in ducts to prevent them being used as handholds by crew, but that’s a minor point.

The boat comes with the options of an overlapping genoa or a self-tacking jib, as well as the ubiquitous bow sprit for offwind sails.

Below decks, Dufour offer a longitudinal galley to starboard, or one across the bulkhead at the forward end of the saloon, with a combination of chart table, seating and stowage options.

The striking, hexagonal table, curved seating and three moveable stools won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it aims to be a flexible, sociable space.

There are options for three or four cabins if you split the forward cabin in two (each cabin with its own heads), but most will want the vast owner’s cabin forwards, which comes with separate shower and heads compartments and neat stowage options.

The fact that Sunsail have signed up for a fleet of new Dufours tells you that this boat certainly offers what charterers are looking for and I’d imagine there’s plenty there to keep private owners happy too.

Sailboat Preview: Dufour 44

Dufour Yachts has settled into a rhythm of late. Coming off launches of the Dufour 37, 41 and 61 in a little more than a year’s time, the French sailboat builder’s newest offering is a sturdy 44-foot model. According to Dufour, it was designed to be a game-changer in the midsize cruiser category. 

A collaboration between Felci Yacht Design and the Dufour design team, the Dufour 44 maintains the brand’s DNA of ­comfort, versatility, and seaworthiness. The hull design is optimized for speed and stability, whether cruising along ­coastal ­waters or embarking on offshore passages. 

Some new features are aimed at enhancing the overall sailing experience, including a hexagonal table in the salon. It’s a notable design element with seating for up to 10 people. This boat also has versatile layout options, called Adventure and Ocean versions, in three- and four-stateroom configurations. 

Owners can also choose a longitudinal galley or a forward galley. The longitudinal galley has a larger work surface, while interior designer Luca Ardizio penned a reimagined version of the traditional forward galley. The warm, light-filled salon layout prioritizes atmosphere and flow, with maximum space for ­entertaining, and more stowage than on previous models. 

The owner’s stateroom is forward, with an island berth and a separate head for privacy. 

“The approach we adopted was to create a soft design, playing with curves and experimenting with materials,” Ardizio says. “We opted for the abundant use of white to create a luminous atmosphere. We focused on creating a harmonious ambience by playing with light to enhance the space we were given. This meant making specific decor choices to enhance different areas of the boat.” 

On deck, the enlarged cockpit can seat at least six people, making it ideal for socializing and relaxation underway. The swim platform is enlarged, with a dual-access concept that’s intended to ease the guests’ transition between on-deck activities and relaxation. 

“The objective was to create a spacious outdoor living area, resulting in a proportionally larger cockpit compared with her predecessor of the same size,” says naval architect Umberto Felci. “Our focus was on integrating elements from the Dufour 470 and Dufour 530, emphasizing fluid communication in the cockpit, facilitating easy passage to the deck, and optimizing the overall length of the boat. We have taken successful elements from the Dufour 41 while introducing new features.”

Dufour 44 : More boat for more possibilities

With the new ship, the yacht builders in La Rochelle are retiring the predecessor model, the Dufour 430 Grand Large, after a market presence of just five years. At the same time, the new model generation is being updated and further expanded, following the types Dufour 37 and Dufour 41 which recently celebrated its world premiere. And, of course, the long-standing design partners from Felci Yacht Design have once again been commissioned to design the new Dufour 44.

The design and layout on deck were generously adopted from the smaller Dufour 41. However, the designers have provided more space between the helm stations and the coaming and also installed a step to make it easier to get from the cockpit to the running deck. The steps also serve as a locker for the lines. What's more, Dufour has now installed a total of six winches in the cockpit of the new boat. This means that the sheets for the mainsail and genoa can be operated individually on both sides and do not necessarily have to be folded down during manoeuvres. The buyer also has the choice of having the boat equipped with an overlapping genoa with hoisting points on the coachroof or with a smaller self-tacking jib. The sail plan and sail areas are still being calculated and are therefore not yet precisely defined.

Dufour 44: Great variance for owners and charterers alike

The arrangement below deck is also interesting. The most striking detail is the hexagonal saloon table. With additional stools, up to eight people can sit together in the saloon. The concept also shows flexibility for the saloon layout, where the galley can either be installed as a long row with large work surfaces and plenty of storage space to the side or split forward against the main bulkhead. In this case, the free space on the starboard side is occupied by an additional sofa.

For owners, the boat is built with three very generously equipped double cabins, each with their own bathrooms and with the option of converting one of the two aft heads as a separate shower cubicle. The toilet room and shower are also separate in the foredeck. For use in the charter business, the new 44 can also be equipped with two compartments and two toilet rooms at the front. This means that Dufour can offer the ship with a maximum of four double cabins, each with its own bathroom, which is still a novelty in the length class. The layouts of all four layout variants are shown in the picture gallery above. And of course combinations are also possible.

Dufour Yachts plans to present the new 44 as a world premiere at the trade fair in Düsseldorf in January 2024. An initial price has also already been announced: the boat will cost 327,250 euros, including 19% VAT, with a built-in engine and a single set of Dacron sails.
