The Disco Volante (from Italian meaning "Flying Disc" or "Flying Saucer") was a fictional luxury hydrofoil yacht owned by SPECTRE operative Emilio Largo . The vessel first appeared in Ian Fleming 's 1962 novel Thunderball and was later featured in its 1965 James Bond film adaptation of the same name . The vessel was subsequently re-imagined as the Superyacht Flying Saucer for the unofficial 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again and was mentioned in the 2015 mobile video game James Bond: World of Espionage .

Novel appearance [ ]

The motor yacht, Disco Volante, was a hydrofoil craft, built for Emilio Largo with £200,000 of SPECTRE funds by the Italian constructors, Leopoldo Rodrigues, of Messina. [1] With a hull of aluminium and magnesium alloy, two Daimler-Benz four-stroke diesels supercharged by twin Brown-Boveri turbo superchargers, the Disco Volante could move her 100 tons at around fifty knots, with a cruising range at that speed of around four hundred miles. [1] An expensive vessel, its design had been chosen for the organization's scheme due to its unique combination of speed, cargo/passenger space, high stability, and the essential shallow draft for Bahamian waters. [1] In addition, the Disco Volante assisted Largo in maintaining his front as a millionaire treasure hunter. The vessel was shipped out to the Florida Keys by the South Atlantic route six months prior to the events of Thunderball and served as the method by which Largo moved their stolen atomic bombs.

Film appearance [ ]

A luxurious craft, it was decked out with sleeping quarters, living areas and many other luxuries. It was purchased with SPECTRE funds for £250,000. The craft plays a pivotal role in the seizure and transportation of two nuclear warheads. It is a high-tech ship that possesses a number of smaller underwater submarine craft. The crew in the movie wear shirts that say "M.Y. Disco Volante". The "M.Y." presumably stands for the ship prefix "Motor Yacht."

The Disco Volante was used primarily for the seizure and transportation of two nuclear warheads stolen from a hijacked Vulcan bomber. As part of SPECTRE 's plan, the Vulcan bomber would fly to the prearranged rendevous point with the Disco Volante and make a difficult landing on water, using the underwater landing lights which had been set up nearby. Frogmen would then recover the warheads and return to the ship through its underwater hatch. Once onboard, the bombs would be relocated to an atoll hiding place; awaiting the time when Largo would return with the Disco Volante to move the weapons to their target: Miami.

In the movie adaptation of Thunderball, the ship is destroyed during a pitched battle between Largo and Bond. With no one at the helm and the steering jammed, the ship ran aground at full speed and burst into flames.

The Disco Volante consisted really of two vessels, a front hydrofoil and a rear attached "cocoon", this enabled the hydrofoil to be detached and move independently at high speed. It included an underwater hatch for loading the bombs and giving access for divers.

The real craft used in the film was a hydrofoil ferry, The Flying Fish, built by Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, who had built the first successful one at Freccia del Sole. The "cocoon" was built on set. It was purchased for the film for $500,000 and brought from Puerto Rico to Miami for refitting and refurbishment. The hydrofoil never sailed again after the filming. It was rented as a stationary houseboat, docked at a marina on Miami's MacArthur Causeway, until it sank at the dock in the early 1980s.

36m Cantieri di Lavagna motor yacht Disco Volante for sale

The 36-metre motor yacht Disco Volante is newly listed for sale with Orieta Saraci of EST Yachting and Services.

Built of mahogany by Cantieri di Lavagna in 1981, the Admiral 36 model completed a comprehensive servicing and refit in 2023, which included areas of new hull planking, varnishing, and new interior fabrics. The yacht also completed her RINA class survey in 2022 and received a new interior and layout from Codecasa Shipyards in 2014.

Disco Volante accommodates ten guests in five staterooms, her master being full beam and positioned amidships for minimum motion. This is complemented by a VIP suite, two doubles and one twin cabin, all on the lower deck. There are quarters for a crew of up to seven.

She has the feel of a classic gentleman's yacht but with an unexpectedly light and contemporary interior, finished with dark wood soles and high gloss pale veneers on bulkheads and deckheads, with light carpets and soft furnishings. A separate, formal dining room for ten is positioned forward on the main deck with views forward, the midships galley separating it from the saloon.

On deck, there is a spacious aft lounging area with loose furniture that is shaded by the overhanging sundeck. There is also an additional space on the foredeck that can have an awning stretched over it when at anchor. Up on the sundeck, al fresco dining can be enjoyed at an expandable table while sunpads to port and starboard feel secure thanks to the bulwarks and rails outboard.

More exposed sunpads, finished in pale blue, sit forward of the helmstation. Tinted green windows with varnished wood frames, brightwork on the inside of the bulwarks on the walkaround side decks and wooden handrails all add to the classic feel.

The 205GT yacht for sale is powered by three 1,420hp Caterpillar engines that give her a top speed of 27 knots, a cruising speed of 22 knots and a range of 450 nautical miles at 20 knots.

Lying in Naples, Italy, Disco Volante is asking €2,495,000 with VAT paid.

Thunderball, the fourth opus in the James Bond series, is an opportunity to discover a yacht less ordinary than one might think at first glance: Disco Volante!

It is in the Bahamas, in Nassau, that we discover Disco Volante, the personal yacht of Emilio Largo, a billionaire as flamboyant as he is ruthless, anchored off the coast of his superb seaside villa, Palmyra.

Number 2 of the criminal organization Spectre, headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Emilio Largo is the president of a Paris-based charity, the International Center for Assistance to Displaced Persons.

Within Spectre, Emilio Largo is in charge of Extortion and responsible for the NATO Project, which consists in stealing 2 nuclear bombs from the latter, in exchange for £100 million!

At the heart of this scheme is Disco Volante, a yacht whose objective is not to entertain its rich owner for sea trips between the Bahamas and Florida, but to work underhand... to transport the said atomic bombs.

Its entrails conceal a diving lock, housing an underwater transport vehicle, essential to go and store nuclear weapons in an underwater cave, before positioning one off the coast of Miami!

However, the main characteristic of Disco Volante does not lie in this dive chamber, but in its very concept: built in Sicily, at the Rodriquez Cantieri Messina shipyard, Disco Volante is in fact a hydrofoil motoryacht, made up of two detachable parts, the catamaran stern - the 15 m long cocoon - housing the flybridge, which can be clipped onto the forward drive section. 

This front part (20.75m long) is in fact a Rodriquez PT20, the very first production hydrofoil boat, built in 1957, and which will be transformed for production needs in Puerto Rico, after an investment of nearly 500,000 dollars.

A pioneer, the Rodriquez PT 20 will be the very first commercial hydrofoil boat to be put into service on a regular service, Messina, Reggio Calabria operated by SNAV (Società Navigazione Alta Velocità ). With its 1350hp V12, its capacity to carry 72 passengers, the Rodriquez PT 20 flew at 37 knots, in the greatest comfort (for 50 knots in the novel and 20 knots in the movie, a fake beard from Largo to Bond, to hide the true nature of his yacht!)

Her low draft of 1m/3'3" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Her water tanks store around 2,000 Litres of fresh water.

Motor Yacht Disco Volante from Thunderball

These are representations of a 3D model of the Motor Yacht “Disco Volante” from the 1965 James Bond film “Thunderball”. In the film the vessel is intended to represent a normal luxury yacht, but is actually in two parts: The forward part being a fast hydrofoil (a vessel that lifts its hull out of the water on underwater wings called foils), and the aft part being a non-propelled catamaran (called “cocoon” in the film) which partially encloses the hydrofoil and gives the appearance of extra cabins and deck area. For the film, an existing fast hydrofoil ferry “Flying Fish” was used, with extensions added to the sides of the bow to fair into the sides of the cocoon. The cocoon was made specifically for the film.

References for the model mainly came from photos found using internet image searches and also screen grabs of various scenes from a DVD of the film. The yacht was modelled completely in Blender. All renders for the stills and the animations were made in Cycles, and post processing was done in the Blender compositor.

This is an animation showing the separation of the hydrofoil from the cocoon.

For this, the wake, foam and splashes were modelled in Realflow using a simplified animated representation of the hydrofoil and cocoon exported as an alembic animation from Blender into Realflow. The resulting wake, foam and splash sequences from Realflow were imported back into Blender as alembic files and combined with the original animation but in this case replacing the simplified hydrofoil and cocoon with the fully detailed ones. The main ocean surface was modelled using the Ocean modifier, with the Realflow wake mesh projected onto the ocean surface.

The lighting for the stills and the animation were all by HDRI (HDRI Haven “sunflowers”), with no supplementary lights. This part of Thunderball was set in the Caribbean, so I wanted strong sunlight. The renders only needed minimal colour correction in the Blender Compositor, referring to the vectorscope to contain and balance the colour spread, with some blow-out allowed on the forward rail and other reflecting surfaces which were then enhanced using a glare node.

I did not do any colour grading, even though the screenshot of the actual yacht shows it whiter than the renders. I intentionally used a slightly off-white, cream, colour for the yacht materials rather than brilliant white to give contrast to the foam and spray.

The Realflow simulation is made using a domain that covers the whole path of the animation. The resulting wake mesh is the same plan size as the domain and the wake progresses through from one end to the other, following the animation.

In Blender, a lattice was set up slightly larger in plan area than the Realflow wake mesh and divided to 64 x 64 x1 (the maximum allowed). This was positioned at the still water level of the wake mesh (set up using the first frame and aligning the vertical position of the lattice level with the undisturbed water surface right at the front of the wake mesh). A lattice modifier was assigned to the wake mesh linking to the lattice and the lattice shrink wrapped to a proxy of the ocean surface (an exact copy of the ocean surface but not used in any renders). The shrinkwrapping being “project” and positive and negative z.

The actual (rendered) ocean surface was then shrink wrapped to the (shrinkwrapped) wake mesh (again “project” and positive and negative z). By splitting like this, the wake mesh was able to be distorted to generally follow the shape of the ocean surface and the (rendered) ocean surface was able to be locally displaced up and down to follow the peaks and troughs of the wake behind the boat. Without the proxy, there would be a circular relationship: the wake mesh being deformed to the ocean and the ocean being deformed to the wake mesh which probably would have failed. Credit for this idea of using a proxy is to 47guitartom’s youtube tutorial “Ocean Modifier plus FLIP fluid sim equals greatness!”

Note that the Realflow mesh is imported as a Mesh Sequence Cache. The lattice modifier is the only one that works with the cache. Other methods, such as using the surface deform modifier bound to a subdivided plane rather than to a lattice, fail as the bind only works on the frame it is set up on, but then unbinds itself after the frame progresses to the next one.

The four underwater lights are spotlights, each positioned below the water surface just outboard of the underwater hulls and pointing up and out at an angle.

A volumetric container is set up with its top surface just below the water surface and encompassing the arc of the spot lights, using a principled volume shader with the scatter and absorption colours set the same (a sort of turquoise).

The water surface is the same as for the daylight shots, which is a mixture of glossy (for colour) and refraction (for transparency) shaders, but in this case the mix proportion of the refraction shader is increased to increase visibility of the spot lights.

The environment is the same HDRI as for the daylight shots but with the brightness significantly reduced so that the clouds are only just visible. There is a mesh emitter behind the camera to illuminate the yacht.

In case some of these renders look familiar to Thea users, in 2018 I did similar renders to the three stills shown above using the Thea renderer & Thea materials and showed those on the Thea forum. However, all of these on this thread have been re-worked this year using Cycles and Cycles materials, and are completely produced using Blender. I no longer use Thea.

Just for curiosity, do you have a link for those renders? I’d like to see how far/close the two renderes did the job

edit: I’ve just watched those tutorials by 47guitartom on YT. My question is: you end up having two overlapping surfaces, the one from the fluid sim pushed down to “touch” the proxy, and the one from the ocean sim raised up to “touch” the fluid sim. How comes that you can render overlapping faces without z-fight issues?

The renderable ocean is shrink wrapped so it is 5mm lower than the wake mesh it is being wrapped to. I found that this was enough to avoid any interference.

Another thing I did was to make the wake mesh transparent where its surface is less than 50 degrees to the horizontal. This was intended to avoid the wake mesh obscuring the foam on the wave peaks on the ocean (generated from the ocean modifier), but may also help with z-fighting. This is illustrated below. Note that this is from the preview window and there is no foam or spray shown.

Thanks for the info on the combining of the ocean modifier and the wake. I also tried to follow along with GuitarTom on YouTube but I found his tutorials very hard to follow and I struggled to understand the “why it works” behind the methods. I got some FlipFluids sims working with An ocean modifier but it was all super patchy and not exactly what I wanted. Worked for what was needed, but I really need to spend more time on this merging method.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
