Multihulls World #191

The Grand Large Yachting group brings together a number of shipyards, and in 2021 launched the GLY World Odyssey 500, a major round-the-world rally taking place over a three-year period (participants will be completing this great adventure in May 2024).

We will keep you posted on new articles on this subject.

The event is reserved for owners of Outremer catamarans and other multihulls and monohulls built by the group, and it has been a great success... motivating the GLY teams to open registrations for the next edition on the very first day of the Cannes Yachting Festival. The GLY World Odyssey 2025, as it is called, will take participants to the most remote and beautiful corners of the world, while providing full logistical support. In the meantime, a new Atlantic rally is being offered to Owners of GLY boats in the autumn of 2024, on original routes taking them far from saturated anchorages: the aim is to sail to the mysterious waters of Loch Ness in Scotland, then to the majestic fjords of the Norwegian coast, all the way to the former Viking trading centre of Gotland in Sweden. The organizers assured us, “ Before the start and throughout the rally, technical briefings will be organized to ensure that each crew is well prepared for the different types of sailing that awaits them. ”

Interesting FACTS About The Dufour 412 Grand Large

A popular charter stalwart. The Dufour 412 GL offers plenty of comfort, cruising with her is a great experience. The boat is extremely wide (4.2 metres) , so you'll feel like royalty on board and inside. We highly recommend this sailboat to families with children, it easily turns into one big floating playground. The Dufour 412 GL is also a reasonably stable, safe and solid vessel.

Some Dufours have a furling mainsail, others have a spar mainsail. Typical of this boat is the large genoa, which works even in calmer weather conditions, and in big winds you can sail it like a race.

The model has the standard equipment typical of most sailboats of this type. Usually there is an additional rubber dinghy, fridge, sprayhood (cockpit canopy) and depending on the destination or owner, heating , air conditioning , bow thruster and so on.

If you will be sailing with very young children, we recommend that you ask for baby nets (baby nets) when booking to prevent any potential falls overboard.

Where can you sail from?

On the Dufour 412 Grande Large you can sail almost anywhere in the world. Traditionally, you will find most of these boats in Croatia , followed by Greece and Italy . We offer the Dufour 412 Grande Large on behalf of Altair in Montenegro ,   Anaho on the French Côte d'Azur or Essengie in Corsica. But you can also explore exotic destinations on these ships, namely Mexico with Le Marval , Curacao in St. Martin, Reload in the Bahamas and Kairos in the British Virgin Islands). But these models are also popular in the Nordic regions, with Havsvale anchored in Norway and Astragale in Sweden.

TAILOR-MADE FOR FAMILY CRUISES

Dufour sailing yachts are usually characterised by one completely overlooked detail, the large headsail . They often have a spacious baden plateau, a barbecue and a large cockpit. "Dufours" can be highly recommended for family cruises or quieter holidays at sea. Although their hull allows for fast sailing, they are not racing sailboats. The boats are very stable, they do not go into a roll or spin-out too soon .

THE MOST POPULAR MODELS

In 2018, the Dufour brand was bought by Fountaine Pajot, but the original Dufour brand was retained. The most famous models are the Dufour 390 or the larger Dufour 460 Grand Large . Dufour boats are mostly rented in Croatia , Greece and Italy .

Fountaine Pajot

The so-called "armout" is a matter of the heart for many sailors. One of the most famous French brands of double-hulled yachts is extremely popular on the charter market. Founded in 1974 by Jean Françoise Fountaine and Yves Pajot, it currently produces between 150 and 180 new catamarans (including motor yachts) a year.

From yachtsmen for yachtsmen

The company prides itself on the fact that its designers are passionate yachtsmen. They are keen to follow modern trends, especially in the field of materials, and strive to apply them to the hull and equipment. Fontaine Pajout has enriched the market with a number of patents and innovations, the brand's most famous invention being the injection moulding of material into the hull.

Currently, they mainly produce cruising catamarans , where the emphasis is on comfort and space. Right in the spirit of Fountaine Pajot's tradition of focusing on providing a premium lifestyle while cruising.

The most popular models

Fountaine Pajot's most popular models include the Isla 40 , Elba 45 and Saona 47 . The company's catamarans can be found all over the world, but mostly in exotic destinations like the Bahamas, Seychelles and Martinique. The reason for this is the low draft.

The round the world rally of a lifetime

Join us, starting september 2021.

The Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey 500 is a round the world rally, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first round the world voyage by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano.

To celebrate this special occasion, Jimmy Cornell and the Grand Large Yachting team invite you to join an exclusive rally, initially reserved for Outremer, Garcia, Allures and Gunboat owners but now open to a few boats outside of the group.

The itinerary, highlighting the global reach of this event, will include 2 routes:

  • Tropical, along the traditional trade wind route,
  • Southern via the Magellan Strait and Patagonia,

The two routes will merge in Tahiti from where the combined fleet will sail together for the remaining part of the rally.

grand large yachting

A scientific and educational program specifically created for the event.

The GLYWO 500 is a round the world sailing event aimed at highlighting the consequences of climate change by calling at some of the most endangered island communities. This global sailing event will also endeavor to highlight the effects of climate change on the Arctic icecap, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Galapagos Islands, all of which lie on the GLYWO 500 route.

In line with the overall aim of the Odyssey, participants will play an active role in projects undertaken by the event by being involved in an educational program, including contact with a school of origin and local schools along the way to keep them informed of the progress of the rally, and which will be visited upon arrival. Participants will also be invited to take part in scientific data gathering on behalf of international research institutions, and to contribute to community projects in some of the endangered places the GLYWO 500 will be visiting.

Interview / Grand Large Yachting: "Marsaudon has the know-how, but needs a clearer direction"

grand large yachting

The Grand Large Yachting group took over Marsaudon Composites, builder of ORC catamarans, at the bar of the Lorient court on Tuesday September 12, 2023. Xavier Desmarest, co-founder of the group, explains the decision.

Briag Merlet

Complete takeover of Marsaudon Composites by Grand Large Yachting

The Lorient court has handed down its decision in the receivership proceedings for Marsaudon Composites, builder of ORC catamarans . Of the 4 bids submitted, the court has chosen the Grand Large Yachting group, already responsible for the Outremer, Gunboat , Allures, Garcia and RM Yachts brands, as the buyer. The latter will take over all Marsaudon Composites assets, the ORC brand, its molds, and all 65 employees. Xavier Desmarest, co-founder of Grand Large Yachting , explains: "We are also taking over the contracts for the 4 current boats, as the amounts involved make this possible."

ORC 57

A common DNA

For the manager, the takeover seemed an obvious choice, given the closeness of the brands: "The brands' DNA is close. Grand Large Yachting's mission is to enable sailors to fulfill their dreams of a voyage, large or small, in complete safety. We already had a wide choice. ORC does the same, with different technical choices, and a return to simplicity that we didn't have before. This simplicity, which borders on sobriety, is in with the times. What we have in common with Outremer is this culture of lightness, which will be essential for the development of electrics in particular."

Nef Marsaudon

Industrial interest and ORC relaunch

The acquisition of Marsaudon is of mutual industrial interest to both parties. Indeed, Grand Large Yachting , which is struggling to find the necessary production resources, will be building Outremer 45s in Lorient, which will fill Marsaudon Composites' workload. Xavier Desmarest emphasizes: "This will take the pressure off and avoid a race against time in the recovery. We'll be able to take the time to understand what wasn't profitable without having the knife to the throat. The situation is similar to when we took over Outremer. We have the know-how, but we need a clearer direction. Racing is not our thing. On the other hand, with Outremer, ORC and Gunboat, we're going to cover the high-performance catamaran segment extensively."

Grand Large Yachting takes over Marsaudon Composites and the ORC brand

Minimal Logo

The French Grand Large Yachting group has acquired the Marsaudon Composites shipyard, a well-known manufacturer of high-performance catamarans based in Lorient. The takeover includes the ORC brand, under which the Marsaudon Composites shipyard produces its catamarans that are sold and appreciated worldwide. The news was announced by the Lorient Commercial Court at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 , held from 12 to 17 September.

Grand Large Yachting already owns some iconic boat brands, namely Allures, Garcia, Gunboat, Outremer and RM . With this acquisition, the French group is completing its range of grand cruising yachts: whether for small or large cruises, ORC catamarans (acronym for Ocean Rider Catamarans ) offer a sailing experience that complements that of the other brands in the Grand Large Yachting group. In addition to this, these catamarans are highly renowned for their performance and build quality.

grand-large-yachting-orc

The takeover of Marsaudon Composites includes the acquisition of the shipyard’s entire team, numbering some 65 people.

About Marsaudon Composites

Founded in 1999, Marsaudon Composites was first dedicated to the manufacture of models and moulds, then to the manufacture of composite parts, developing recognized expertise in the process of infusion of very large pieces. On the strength of this experience, Marsaudon Composites was quickly entrusted with the construction of multihulls for both yachting and competition. Since 2014, it has been developing and marketing its own line of sailing catamarans under the ORC brand, designed as fast sailing yachts for yachting and racing purposes.

About Grand Large Yachting

Founded in 2003, Grand Large Yachting has five sailboat brands (Allures, Outremer, Garcia, Gunboat and RM) and two companies specializing in owner services, making the group an international leader in grand cruising, as well as being renowned for the quality and reliability of its sailboats. Grand Large Yachting’s mission is to enable everyone, experienced sailors or not, to make the dream of a small or large sailing voyage come true, respecting the oceans and providing safety, serenity and support to the owner at every stage of the project. Grand Large Yachting offers a range of training services ashore and at sea and organizes a round-the-world rally in three years, the first edition of which is launched in 2021.
