Athens Boarding Location

Athens: kalamaki alimos marina.

Athens International airport is at Spata, a 45-60 minute taxi ride from the marina and central Athens. Saturday is best spent visiting Athens sites before coming to the marina and boarding. If you arrive early, explore the marina, shop at the Marionopolis supermarket (1 block west of the marina on Poseidonos Blvd along the beach) or have a drink or light lunch at Skipper’s or Kitchen Bar.

Airport to downtown: Yellow taxis can be found lined up at the airport. Taxis take 45 minutes to 1 hour to get downtown based on traffic. It costs approximately 50-60 Euros one-way per taxi. They are smaller European vehicles and only have room for three passengers and baggage. Drivers may charge a baggage fee that is approx. Euro 3.

Downtown Athens to the Kalamaki Alimos Marina: It takes 15-20 minutes and costs approx. 20 Euros per car one-way. Do not get out of your taxi at the marina until you have identified your meeting point, as it is a big marina.

Airport to downtown: Bus number X95 travels from the airport every 30 minutes making 8 stops (including the Hilton) and then terminates downtown at Syntagma/Constitution Square. It is air-conditioned and costs approx. 5 Euros. Syntagma Square is a short distance to most hotels but a taxi may be advisable at this point. Plaka hotels are within walking distance from Syntagma if you do not have too much baggage.

Airport to Kalamaki Alimos Marina: Bus number X96, runs every 30 minutes south from the airport to Piraeus along the coast passing by Alimos Kalamaki Marina and costs approx. 5 Euros. Downtown Athens to Kalamaki Athens Marina: Public transport by subway and tramcar from central Athens hotels is easy and convenient. From Syntagma Sqr. (Athens centre) take the Tram Line to Alimos marina (EDEM stop). The metro runs every 30 minutes from 05.30 to 00.20 on a daily basis. The ticket costs 8 Euro per person.

The taxi fare from Athens airport to the port of Lavrion is approximately 50 euros in day time and 70 euros in night time (24:00-05:00). Downtown Athens to Lavrion: Taxis will normally take about 1.15 hours to go from Omonoia/ Syntagma to Lavrion. To get closer to Lavrion by public transport, you can take the tram from Syntagma or Faliro to Voula and then take a taxi. A taxi ride from Voula will take about 30 minutes. The taxi fare from Athens centre to the port of Lavrion is approximately 65 euros in day time and 80 euros in night time (24:00-05:00).

Athens Airport to Lavrion: Suburban (KTEL) buses leave from Athens airport usually every hour and go to Lavrion via Markopoulo, a town in the midway from airport to Lavrion. The first bus departs from Athens airport to Lavrion at 06:30 am and the last bus at 22:00 pm. Ticket price is approximately 5 euros. Crewed Catamaran Charters in Greece

crewed catamaran charter in greece

Why Greece is the most wanted destination for catamaran rentals worldwide?

catamaran charter greece with crew

Greece is often hailed as a top destination for sailors and yachting enthusiasts. And for good reason! With more than 6,000 Greek islands and islets offering abundant sunshine, clear waters, and unparalleled natural beauty, Greece is a sailor’s paradise. It is an ideal sailing destination for those seeking to combine island hopping, swimming in secluded bays, exploring hidden beaches, all bearing rich history, culture, and mouthwatering gastronomy. Exploring the Greek islands on a catamaran is completely different to visiting them on land; only by water will you discover the genuine and true beauty of coastal Greece.

Which are the best Islands to sail to in the Greek Archipelago?

catamaran charter greece with crew

The Cyclades is one of the most popular sailing destinations in Greece, consisting of more than 30 islands. Warm temperature, picturesque ports, and vibrant nightlife offer a unique blend of traditional and modern Greece. Islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos are among the most beloved and popular choices that attract thousands of visitors each year. In contrast, the Ionian Islands offer a more tranquil sailing experience, with crystal-clear waters, turquoise shores, and lush green landscapes. Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Zakynthos are the most famous islands that attract yachties seeking to experience the Greek island life

Advantages and Disadvantages;

Advantages of a crewed catamaran charter in greece.

catamaran charter greece with crew

Catamarans are the ideal choice for a perfect sailing vacation. Unlike monohull yacht charters, catamarans offer spacious and luxurious living space, unmatched stability, and effortless handling and maneuvering. With catamaran rentals, you can enjoy an unparalleled sailing experience, with enough room to relax, sunbathe and socialize with your family or friends. The cabins are comfortable, and the living quarters offer ample space for cooking, dining, and lounging. Today’s cruising catamarans are very safe in rough seas or choppy waters, making them popular with first-time sailors and families.

Additionally, catamarans have shallow drafts, which makes them ideal for exploring the stunning Greek coastline and shallow coves and bays. So, if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable vacation experience in Greece, choosing a catamaran charter will definitely give you more space, comfort, and stability than any other yacht.

Disadvantages of a Crewed Catamaran Charter in Greece

When it comes to crewed charters in Greece, catamarans have become increasingly popular over time. However, despite their versatile design and spacious interiors, there are some disadvantages in choosing a catamaran over a monohull. One major drawback is the fact that a multihull yacht tends to have more expensive mooring fees because it is beamier and takes up more space at the dock. This can add a significant amount to the overall cost of the charter, especially if you plan to moor in popular marinas with high fees.

Additionally, catamarans are generally more expensive overall than monohull sailing yachts, which means you will end up spending more than you would on a monohull charter. From a pure sailing perspective, monohull sailboats offer a more complete sailing experience, with greater emphasis in controlling wind power and perfecting maneuvering skills. While catamarans offer stability and comfort, they can sometimes feel less exciting to sail than monohulls.

Overall, while crewed catamaran charters will suit many sailors, if you’re looking for a challenging and authentic sailing adventure in Greece, a monohull sailboat may be the better choice for some.

Luxurious Amenities of a Crewed Catamaran Charter

catamaran charter greece with crew

Luxurious amenities are plentiful for crewed catamaran charters. One of the most striking features of a catamaran is the incredible amount of space it provides, both in living quarters and outdoor relaxation. This extra space allows for a more opulent touch to be brought to furnishings and decor, providing excellent comfort and style. Because catamarans have two hulls instead of one, the guest cabins are often larger and provide greater privacy than those found on a typical monohull sailing yacht. This means that guests are free to relax and unwind in their own space without the worry of prying eyes or interruptions.

Additionally, catamarans can accommodate more crew members, making them better suited for larger groups or those with unique needs. From gourmet meals prepared by onboard chefs to water-based activities, the top-notch amenities of a crewed catamaran charter help ensure that your time on the water is as enjoyable as possible.

Which is the best period for a catamaran rental in Greece?

catamaran charter greece with crew

The most suitable time of the year for a catamaran rental in Greece is between May and October, which is the sailing season in the Mediterranean. During this period, the weather is mild and sunny, and the sea is warm and calm. July and August are the busiest months of the year, and the most popular destinations can be quite crowded; therefore, it is best to book in advance. Spring and autumn are also ideal periods for sailing, with fewer crowds, more affordable prices, and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, it’s important to check the weather forecast before you go, as the weather can be quite unpredictable during this period.

Crewed catamaran in Paros, Greece

As the quintessential Greek island, it’s no surprise that Paros is one of the most popular destinations in all of Europe.

Host to some of the world’s most breathtaking beaches and boasting a rich history that dates back over 4,000 years, Paros is an island like no other. With an average of 300 days of sunshine each year, it’s no wonder that Paros has become a tourist hot spot. If you’re thinking about traveling there, we recommend hiring a catamaran.

Because the island itself is small and easily walkable, a catamaran will help you explore nearby islands and experience the true beauty of Greece. Plus, there are so many beautiful spots to stop along the way for swimming and snorkeling.

Greece has dozens of islands that one can visit. Hiring a catamaran gives you the freedom to go wherever you want and stop when you feel like it. You don’t need to wait for ferries or figure out bus schedules.

Hiring a catamaran will allow you to see even more of this gorgeous destination. Hire a small crew to take care of all your needs as you enjoy breathtaking views from your hotel room windows all day long.

Catamaran hire in Naxos, Greece

Many travelers to Greece love to spend time on Naxos, a beautiful island in the Cyclades located in the Aegean Sea.

Naxos is a popular tourist destination because it has so much to offer. Visitors can swim in crystal-clear waters, hike through exotic landscapes, and enjoy delicious cuisine. However, hiring a catamaran to island Naxos offers a one-of-a-kind experience for tourists that cannot be found anywhere else in the world .

The most captivating thing about hiring a catamaran is the opportunity to see dolphins from the deck of your boat. Dolphins inhabit waters near Naxos and often swim alongside the boats and interact with tourists.

This makes for an exciting day trip full of joy and laughter. Visitors can also bring along their underwater cameras or smartphones to capture memories of their dolphin encounters for years to come.

A catamaran for rent in Greece also gives travelers the chance to sail through some of the best scenery around Naxos without having to worry about controlling the boat themselves.

Our catamaran is equipped with a captain and staff members who provide passengers with drinks and snacks during their trip. This means that passengers don’t have to worry about stopping at restaurants or stores while visiting the island.

Catamaran for rent in Mykonos, Greece

If you’re looking to discover the real Greece, you need to hire a catamaran around the island of Mykonos.

There are countless islands off the coast of mainland Greece that offer alternative experiences, but there’s something about the region around Mykonos that sets it apart from the rest. In recent years, the island Mykonos has risen to prominence as a destination for tourists looking for something new and exciting. However, it has managed to avoid the pitfalls that have plagued other destinations in Greece in recent years.

The tourist industry is still thriving on island Mykonos, but the pastoral lifestyle of its residents is still intact. Most visitors head to center Mykonos and explore the main town area, where they’ll find dozens of shops selling handcrafted goods from local artisans.

The town is known for its many boutiques specializing in island-inspired fashion and accessories like sandals, clothing, scarves, and bags, making it a great place to pick up souvenirs for friends back home.

There are also plenty of options for dining out in Mykonos town , with everything from traditional Greek taverns serving fresh seafood caught by local fishermen to modern restaurants serving up gourmet dishes in gorgeous outdoor settings.

Scheduled cruises are also offered as Private or Semi-Private, to celebrate your special event.

Private: you charter the boat exclusively for your party (the capacity of the Catamaran is 25 passengers) Semi-private: You ensure that the trip will happen even if there are few participants, but there might be other participants on the boat than your party

3 WAYS TO CHARTER A YACHT

We provide a selection of three charter options: Bareboat Charters , Skippered Charters , and Crewed Charters . Opting for a Bareboat Charter means you have the freedom to captain the yacht yourself, requiring only a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you don't possess an ICC or simply prefer to sit back and relax, you have the option to have one of our experienced skippers join your journey, taking the helm for you. We collaborate with a network of highly skilled, multilingual professionals who are eager to come on board.

It's worth noting that some of our larger catamarans and motor yachts are exclusively available as Crewed Charters. With this option, a dedicated crew of at least two individuals, typically a skipper and a hostess or cook, will cater to your every need, ensuring a truly indulgent experience for you and your guests.

Catamarans for Charter in Greece

Sailing Catamaran charters in Greece are a convenient way to have a larger number of guests (up to 12) on a comfortable crewed yacht charter.

Notice that the distances in Greece are quite long . Since most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (inquire for Mykonos-based  catamarans ), the ideal catamaran charter itinerary will include the Saronic Islands of Aegina and Hydra .

For a Catamaran charter in the Cyclades , especially if you are planning to visit Santorini , we recommend chartering out of Mykonos. Our brokers will find you a Mykonos-based yacht or arrange a delivery of your desired yacht to the starting location of your charter vacation. Start a chat to tell us what you’re looking for in your catamaran charter, we’re here for you 24/7!

How to charter crewed catamarans in Greece

Ideally, you will inquire about a catamaran charter 12 months in advance . WHY? The best catamarans are often fully booked long in advance and it is not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a Greek Island yacht charter .

Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter. Additionally you might find that the yacht you want can’t make it to the port where you wish to commence your yacht charter.

This is especially important if you are planning to charter in the popular destination -the  Cyclades  (and we recommend  you fly into  Mykonos   international airport to start there). Many things have to fall into place to make a succesfull charter vaccation happen, so  inquire early!

  • Most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (marinas from Piraeus in the west to Saunio in the east).
  • Of the catamarans permanently based in the Cyclades , most have temporary availability.
  • You will also find catamarans based in the Ionian islands available for charter.

Best Areas to Charter Catamarans

The best areas to charter catamarans will have small distances between destinations and calm waters. Although they are more capable of crossing oceans, catamarans are slower than motor yachts, which is why they aren’t good for long distance itineraries.

Taking a group of 2 families with young kids who have not chartered before from Athens to Santorini (because why do the additional flight to Mykonos, right?) in August with the Meltemi winds blazing is not the greatest idea for a relaxed sailing vacation. – We’re happy to provide references for people who insisted, only to regret their Indiana Jones type of vacation.

If you’re afraid there is nothing to see apart from Santorini and Mykonos in the Cyclades Islands? Let Peter show you these assorted charter locations in the Saronic Gulf in the video below…

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

The Saronic Gulf is perfect for first-time charterers – with 2 to 4 hours cruise between islands outside of the Meltemi winds, fantastic locations , and amazing things to do such as the Pistachios of Aegina , walking the old town of Poros or snorkeling the Sunken City of Ancient Epidaurus .

catamaran charter greece with crew

Second up are the Cyclades Islands – still perfectly doable on a 7-day crewed catamaran charter, especially if you plan on starting in the actual Cyclades instead of “ taxiing ” there from Athens . In the cyclades captaina are in a great position to account for the weather (instead of having to cross large distances) and provide a pleasurable yacht charter either hitting the hot spots – windmills of Mykonos (or it’s vibrant night clubs), the sights of the city of Thira on Santorini , the ancient Delos – or the hidden gems such as the forgotten island of Anafi .

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Is the cyclades islands a great area for a catamaran charter.

Yes and no – if planned well and with the expectation that things might change last minute dictated by the weather, a catamaran charter in the Cyclades can be a relaxing and pleasurable experience in the Aegean sea. If you’re an exact planner, and not willing to be flexible, it is wise to avoid it .

A yacht charter is subject to the elements – if the weather is bad, the port authority bans all the yachts to depart (usually just the motor yachts, but do you really want to be out there?). That happens in some areas more than in others, and it does happen more frequently in the Cyclades Islands .

We’ve had experiences where a stubborn travel agent (yes, we cooperate with travel agents on the condition we’re taken seriously) has booked activities on a rigid itinerary with total disregard for the weather conditions and its unpredictability. – Horse ride on Siros, dinner reservation in Skorpios on Mykonos, wine tasting on Santorini starting at 9 am sharp on a Saturday morning – you need Poseidon’s blessing to commit to that…

GREECE: BEST TIPS for Luxury Yacht / Catamaran Charters

A good broker and a good captain will list your preferred activities and pre-arrange them on a confirmation basis . Due to our long time in the industry, we have build relationships with many businesses, attractions, restaurants, and activity providers. We can get you to stuff you did not know existed – Would you for example like to have a private dinner in an iconic ancient ruin ? Would you like to have a famous singer show up at your birthday party at Mykonos? Say the word, and we will make it happen!

Advantages of chartering a crewed catamaran in Greece

  • Lower fuel consumption compared to motor yachts.
  • Lower cost, especially for catamarans under 50 ft.
  • Shallow draft – you can get quite close to secluded beaches and white sands with a catamaran charter.
  • Access to the dock – especially in high season, bigger yachts might need to stay out of the harbor and access with a dinghy.
  • Captain + stewardess still the most common crew combination (keeps the costs down), bigger – motor yacht like luxury catamarans are on the rise (with more crew).
  • Gratuity – a 10% gratuity paid after the Catamaran charter is considered completely satisfactory in Greece. Compare that to the (up to) 25% mandatory gratuity that is increasingly being demanded in escrow pre-charter in the Caribbean or the Bahamas.
  • Use of water toys and water sports – rules are more relaxed and definitely less enforced compared to France or Italy – it’s not the same if you get on a jetski in a secluded bay on Iraklia or in the overcrowded Gulf of St Tropez.

Mykonos Greece Island

Disadvantages of chartering a catamaran in Greece

  • Low speed mandating a limited itinerary or a lot of sailing hours – It is not unusual for a catamaran charter to move before sunrise to break it up. Can be mitigated by starting in the destination – Mykonos, Santorini, Lefkada (Ionian), Patmos or Ikaria (Dodecanese), Skiathos (Sporades – Mamma Mia Islands)
  • Smaller crew – used to be 2 crew members, now growing (it’s both a positive and a negative) as per your price sensitivity. Compared to the Caribbean – there are more options.
  • Vertical layout – 2 or 3 decks on a horizontally constrained area.

Catamarans vs Motor Yachts

Charter yachts are rapidly growing in size, keeping up with an ever increasing demand for the most luxurious vessel on the market. – In 2020 , the average length of a crewed catamaran was 45 feet . Where, at the end of 2023, the average size of a new catamaran charter was 67 feet .

Given a crazy expansion of the crewed catamaran fleet (demanding a whole new boat show to accommodate this segment starting in 2023 ), the catamarans are getting closer in onboard capacity to motor yachts.  If you’re looking to get a recent Lagoon 52 catamaran sailing charter with crew, inquire early.

Catamaran Elly - A great example of the intersection of motor yachts and catamarans - a recent trend starting in 2022

As mentioned ealier Power catamarans will generally have a lower fuel consumption,  with comparable deck space at the expense of speed. Catamaran charter will be able to get closer to the beach and will get to marinas easier than a huge motor yacht that had a change of itinerary and is looking for a last-minute spot on the dock (and will probably anchor out, hailing the guests from shore with a dinghy).

With the deck space being comparable in Catamaran Charter- the choice is yours – are you looking for a wider deck that’s arguably more casual for a group to sit down, or are you looking to have a bottle of something really nice served to you on the aft deck of a Ferretti motor yacht ?

Some catamarans have moved it's base from Athens to Cape Sounion (Laurio)- the southernmost cape of Attica and the Gateway to the Cyclades - an interesting option to land in Athens and still start

Popular Sub-Regions in Greece

Mykonos yacht charters.

Boats moored at Mykonos marina

Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.

Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach  to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .

Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters

Beautiful lake in Vouliagmeni

A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.

Santorini Yacht Charters

View of colorful houses in Oia, Greece

A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of  Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.

Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.

Five Reasons to Visit Santorini on a Luxury Yacht Charter

Hydra Yacht Charters

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.

Milos Yacht Charters

Kleftiko Bay, Greece

The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.

The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach  (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Luxury sailing yacht at anchor in Greece with water toys

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

Catamaran Charter Greece

Catamaran charters in Greece have become popular with guests from all over the world. We are delighted about this as it is an excellent way of exploring this beautiful, magical and very interesting part of the Mediterranean.

Greece enjoys a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. It offers breath-takingly beautiful landscapes and the Aegean and Ionian Seas are dotted with picturesque islands. Modern Greece juxtaposes ancient ruins with bustling cities like Athens. The country’s ancient heritage is evident in its archaeological sites, including the Acropolis of Athens, the sanctuary of Delphi, and the ancient city of Mycenae, where remnants of past civilizations still stand as testaments to Greece’s pivotal role in shaping Western civilization.

Modern Greek cuisine—moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita—is celebrated worldwide for its Mediterranean flavours and fresh ingredients.

Greece’s charm lies not only in its breath-taking landscapes and archaeological treasures but also in the warmth and hospitality of its people, who welcome visitors and invite them to experience the magic of this ancient land first hand.

This tradition of hospitality certainly extends to Greek crews, who are as welcoming to their guests as they are knowledgeable about the country’s seas and culture.

Greece catamaran charter areas

There are four main areas for chartering a catamaran in Greece: the Cyclades Islands , the Saronic Gulf , the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanes Islands. One cannot explore all of the areas in one charter.

Even one area can only be partially explored in a week’s charter (with a possible exception of spending a couple of days in the Saronic area and then doing a long crossing over the Cyclades for the rest of the week, if the weather allows). Two of the areas can be combined for longer than a week charter. You need to work with your broker and captain to decide on the islands most suited to you.

Why choose a catamaran charter in Greece?

Island-hopping paradise.

Greece is renowned for its archipelagos, including the Cyclades , Ionian Islands, Saronic Gulf and Dodecanese Islands, each with its own unique charm. A catamaran charter allows you to navigate between these islands effortlessly, discovering secluded beaches, quaint villages, and historic sites along the way. The diversity of these areas means there is something for everyone which makes Greece particularly appealing to those looking for a family friendly catamaran charter.

Anchor close to shore

In their design, a catamaran typically has less hull volume and a shallower draft than other yacht types of comparable size. This allows catamarans to access much shallower waters than other types of yacht, meaning that they can anchor much closer to shore.

Adventurous activities

Whether you’re an avid sailor or a novice, a catamaran charter offers plenty of opportunity for adventurous sailors. You will also be able to try your hand at snorkelling, kayaking, or paddleboarding in secluded coves, or embark on guided hikes to discover hidden gems on the islands.

A catamaran has easy access into the water, making them fantastic option for water lovers and providing easy access to and from your private tender to go into harbours to explore local ports.

Varied itineraries

With a catamaran charter, you have the flexibility to customize your itinerary according to your preferences. Greece offers such a range of sights and activities that your itinerary can be as varied as you wish.

Whether you’re seeking a lively nightlife, or tranquil anchorages, or cultural excursions, your journey can be tailored to suit any preferences. Don’t worry if you change your mind during the charter and wish to steer your charter in a new direction, your crew will be able to amend the itinerary and make new suggestions.

Top romantic honeymoon destination

Greece is known around the world as being an ideal spot to spend your  honeymoon . Quiet lanes leading to small taverns overlooking awe inspiring views really do set the scene for a great beginning to a marriage. A catamaran acts as your very own floating private luxury villa.

Great winds for sailing

One of the benefits of choosing a catamaran charter is the ability to be able to make the most of its sails. Wind conditions in Greece tend to be great for sailing in much of the spring, summer and autumn seasons.

If you are a keen sailor make sure your captain knows in advance so your route can be created to optimise the opportunities for sailing. But it is important to note that Greece is also well known for the Meltemi wind that blows strongly in July and August, particularly in the Cyclades area. During those periods, it is often not possible to sail in the Cyclades.

Greek charter season

Greece, like the rest of the Mediterranean, experiences its High Season or Peak Season in July and August. Mid-Season or Shoulder season as it is sometimes referred to, occurs in June and September. Low season is then in May and October. Due to the different areas available for charter, some areas are better suited to particular months.

Catamaran Crew

The Crew on board your catamaran is a vital part of ensuring your charter is the best it can possibly be. The number of crew on board will vary depending on the size of catamaran, however most catamarans will have between 2 and 4 crew members.

The crew can be comprised of a Captain, Host/Hostess, Chef and Deckhand. On the majority of yachts, the crew will be made up of Greek nationals who are very knowledgeable and experienced in sailing the Greek waters.

Catamaran models and makes

There are a number of different catamaran makes and models. Some of the most common makes are Sunreef, Lagoon, Fountain Pajot and Bali catamarans.

Sunreef is known for its custom luxury catamarans, offering bespoke designs tailored to individual preferences. Models like the Sunreef 50, Sunreef 60, and Sunreef 80 feature expansive living spaces, high-end finishes, and customizable layouts suited for private ownership or charter operations.

Lagoon is one of the most well-known catamaran brands, producing a variety of sailing and power catamarans. Catamaran models like the Lagoon 52, Lagoon 55, Lagoon 62, Lagoon SIXTY 5, Lagoon SIXTY 7, Lagoon SEVENTY 7, are popular choices for cruising enthusiasts, offering a blend of comfort, performance, and seaworthiness.

Fountaine Pajot manufactures a wide range of sailing and power catamarans, renowned for their elegant designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Models like the Fountaine Pajot: Sanya 57, 59ft, 64ft, 67ft and 80ft, cater to both cruising and chartering markets with spacious layouts and modern amenities.

The Bali Catamaran is a line of innovative cruising catamarans designed and manufactured by the Catana Group, a French boatbuilder renowned for its high-performance multihulls. The Bali range is distinguished by its focus on open living spaces, innovative features, and user-friendly design elements.

Within these makes are different models varying in size and layout options. Greece is home to a very large selection of catamarans on the charter market and as such the choice is vast.

Crewed catamarans in Greece offer guests a whole host of amenities to enjoy while aboard. This range from the technical equipment on board to water toys. Having a selection of amenities on board provide guests with comfort and convivence. Here are some common amenities found on a crewed catamaran:

  • Spacious living areas
  • Multiple outside areas with shaded spots
  • Selection of leisure equipment such as water toys, games, on land leisure equipment, camera equipment such as drones and underwater cameras
  • Onboard entertainment systems such as TVs, built in sound systems, outdoor cinema
  • Deck and safety equipment
  • Power generation both via a generator and solar panels

Given the extensive range of destinations, a single charter may not encompass every area, but custom itineraries can be crafted to align with your specific desires.

A catamaran charter typically includes a professional crew (Captain, Host/Hostess, Chef, and Deckhand), tailored itineraries, and a selection of amenities such as spacious living areas, water toys, and onboard entertainment systems. Additional services may vary depending on the specific catamaran and charter package.

Consider factors like the number of guests, preferred amenities, sailing areas, and your budget. High Point Yachting’s experts can help recommend the best options based on your preferences, ensuring a perfect match for your sailing experience.

Guests can typically enjoy a range of activities including snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, guided hikes, and exploring local harbors and villages. The flexibility of a catamaran allows for easy access to secluded coves and vibrant local cultures.

Absolutely, Greece is a family-friendly destination, and catamaran charters offer a safe and exciting way for families to explore the islands, with plenty of activities for children and adults alike.

The peak sailing season in Greece is from June to September, offering ideal weather conditions. However, the shoulder seasons of May and October can also provide a great experience with fewer crowds and milder weather.

es, catamaran charters are highly customizable. You can work with your broker and captain to create an itinerary that suits your preferences, whether you’re interested in historical sites, natural beauty, or culinary experiences.

Not at all. Catamaran charters come with a professional crew who handle all the sailing aspects, making it a relaxing and enjoyable experience for both novice and experienced sailors.

To book a catamaran charter, contact High Point Yachting directly through their website, phone, or email. Their team of yacht charter experts will guide you through the booking process, helping you select the perfect catamaran and itinerary for your trip.
