Athens Boarding Location

Athens: kalamaki alimos marina.

Athens International airport is at Spata, a 45-60 minute taxi ride from the marina and central Athens. Saturday is best spent visiting Athens sites before coming to the marina and boarding. If you arrive early at the marina on boarding day, bags can be left with your owner/operator but you will not officially be able to board until 17:00. If you arrive early, explore the marina, shop at the Marionopolis supermarket (1 block west of the marina on Poseidonos Blvd along the beach) or have a drink or light lunch at Skipper’s or Kitchen Bar.

Airport to downtown: Yellow taxis can be found lined up at the airport. Taxis take 45 minutes to 1 hour to get downtown based on traffic. It costs approximately 50-60 Euros one-way per taxi. They are smaller European vehicles and only have room for three passengers and baggage. Drivers may charge a baggage fee that is approx. Euro 3.

Downtown Athens to the Kalamaki Alimos Marina: It takes 15-20 minutes and costs approx. 20 Euros per car one-way. Do not get out of your taxi at the marina until you have identified your meeting point, as it is a big marina.

Airport to downtown: Bus number X95 travels from the airport every 30 minutes making 8 stops (including the Hilton) and then terminates downtown at Syntagma/Constitution Square. It is air-conditioned and costs approx. 5 Euros. Syntagma Square is a short distance to most hotels but a taxi may be advisable at this point. Plaka hotels are within walking distance from Syntagma if you do not have too much baggage.

Airport to Kalamaki Alimos Marina: Bus number X96, runs every 30 minutes south from the airport to Piraeus along the coast passing by Alimos Kalamaki Marina and costs approx. 5 Euros. Ask the driver for the Edem Taverna stop. You want the west main entrance road where the Shell station and Edem restaurant is located.

Downtown Athens to Kalamaki Athens Marina: Public transport by subway and tramcar from central Athens hotels is easy and convenient. From Syntagma Sqr. (Athens centre) take the Tram Line to Alimos marina (EDEM stop). The metro runs every 30 minutes from 05.30 to 00.20 on a daily basis. The ticket costs 8 Euro per person.

Lavrion Boarding Location

Lavrion is located on the southern part of Athens and has ferries to the Cyclades islands of Kea and Kythnos, and the Eastern-Aegean islands of Lemnos and Agios Efstratios. Lavrion is approximately 1 hour from Athens Eleftherios Venizelos international airport at Spata.

Athens Airport to Lavrion: A taxi will normally take 30 minutes to go from Athens airport to Lavrion. There are taxi queues outside all airport gates. The taxi fare from Athens airport to the port of Lavrion is approximately 50 euros in day time and 70 euros in night time (24:00-05:00). Downtown Athens to Lavrion: Taxis will normally take about 1.15 hours to go from Omonoia/ Syntagma to Lavrion. To get closer to Lavrion by public transport, you can take the tram from Syntagma or Faliro to Voula and then take a taxi. A taxi ride from Voula will take about 30 minutes. The taxi fare from Athens centre to the port of Lavrion is approximately 65 euros in day time and 80 euros in night time (24:00-05:00).

Athens Airport to Lavrion: Suburban (KTEL) buses leave from Athens airport usually every hour and go to Lavrion via Markopoulo, a town in the midway from airport to Lavrion. Passengers go to Markopoulo and from there they take the bus to Lavrion. Buses from Markopoulo to Lavrion are very frequent. The first bus departs from Athens airport to Lavrion at 06:30 am and the last bus at 22:00 pm. Ticket price is approximately 5 euros. Downtown Athens to Lavrion: Suburban (KTEL) buses to Lavrion take about 2 hours to reach their destination. They leave from Pedion Areos, Athens centre. To go to Pedion Areos, take the green metro line to Victoria station and walk up Heiden street. Buses leave every 30-60 min. The first bus from Athens to Lavrion departs at 05:45 am and the last bus departs at 21:30 pm. Ticket price is approximately 5 euros.

Paros Boarding Location

Paroikia marina is approximately 15 km from the airport by taxi. Afros yachting look after all yacht check-ins at the marina. Afros yachting is next to "Marina Café on the first floor, see also the meeting point on the map. If you arrive early at the marina on boarding day, bags can be left with the owner/operator but you will not officially be able to board until 17:00. If you arrive early meet with the base staff then explore the shops and cafes. The main supermarket is located across the road from the marina. You may also have drinks or light lunch atMarina Café.Bags can be left with the base.

By air and ferry

You can fly daily from Athens to Santorini. www.aegeanair.com then take a ferry to Paros.

There are daily boats from Pireaus, Athens. Ferry schedules and tickets to Paros. www.ticketsonline.gr .

Mykonos Boarding Location

The new port is in an area called Tourlos which is about 1.5km from Mykonos town (Chora). The new port is connected by taxi or bus to the main town. The taxi stand in the town is situated on the waterfront on the far right when looking at the sea. The main bus station is near the windmills on the top side of town. If you arrive early at the marina on boarding day, meet with your owner/operator base staff then, shop at the supermarket (small store located across the road from the marina) or alternatively, there is a larger supermarket 5km away form the marina - ask the operator to organise transport for you. Bags can be left with your owner/operator.

There are daily flights out of Athens to Mykonos with www.aegeanair.com . It is a 10 minute taxi ride from the airport to Tourlos port.

There are daily boats from Pireaus, Athens. Ferry schedules and tickets to Mykonos. www.ticketsonline.gr . It is best to book in advance. The ferries typically arrive in Tourlos where the yachts are moored.

Sailing Catamaran charters in Greece are a convenient way to have a larger number of guests (up to 12) on a comfortable crewed yacht charter.

Notice that the distances in Greece are quite long . Since most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (inquire for Mykonos-based  catamarans ), the ideal catamaran charter itinerary will include the Saronic Islands of Aegina and Hydra .

How to charter crewed catamarans in Greece

Ideally, you will inquire about a catamaran charter 12 months in advance . WHY? The best catamarans are often fully booked long in advance and it is not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a Greek Island yacht charter .

Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter. Additionally you might find that the yacht you want can’t make it to the port where you wish to commence your yacht charter.

This is especially important if you are planning to charter in the popular destination -the  Cyclades  (and we recommend  you fly into  Mykonos   international airport to start there). Many things have to fall into place to make a succesfull charter vaccation happen, so  inquire early!

• Most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (marinas from Piraeus in the west to Saunio in the east).
• Of the catamarans permanently based in the Cyclades , most have temporary availability.
• You will also find catamarans based in the Ionian islands available for charter.

Best Areas to Charter Catamarans

The best areas to charter catamarans will have small distances between destinations and calm waters. Although they are more capable of crossing oceans, catamarans are slower than motor yachts, which is why they aren’t good for long distance itineraries.

Taking a group of 2 families with young kids who have not chartered before from Athens to Santorini (because why do the additional flight to Mykonos, right?) in August with the Meltemi winds blazing is not the greatest idea for a relaxed sailing vacation. – We’re happy to provide references for people who insisted, only to regret their Indiana Jones type of vacation.

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

The Saronic Gulf is perfect for first-time charterers – with 2 to 4 hours cruise between islands outside of the Meltemi winds, fantastic locations , and amazing things to do such as the Pistachios of Aegina , walking the old town of Poros or snorkeling the Sunken City of Ancient Epidaurus .

Second up are the Cyclades Islands – still perfectly doable on a 7-day crewed catamaran charter, especially if you plan on starting in the actual Cyclades instead of “ taxiing ” there from Athens . In the cyclades captaina are in a great position to account for the weather (instead of having to cross large distances) and provide a pleasurable yacht charter either hitting the hot spots – windmills of Mykonos (or it’s vibrant night clubs), the sights of the city of Thira on Santorini , the ancient Delos – or the hidden gems such as the forgotten island of Anafi .

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Is the cyclades islands a great area for a catamaran charter.

Yes and no – if planned well and with the expectation that things might change last minute dictated by the weather, a catamaran charter in the Cyclades can be a relaxing and pleasurable experience in the Aegean sea. If you’re an exact planner, and not willing to be flexible, it is wise to avoid it .

A yacht charter is subject to the elements – if the weather is bad, the port authority bans all the yachts to depart (usually just the motor yachts, but do you really want to be out there?). That happens in some areas more than in others, and it does happen more frequently in the Cyclades Islands .

We’ve had experiences where a stubborn travel agent (yes, we cooperate with travel agents on the condition we’re taken seriously) has booked activities on a rigid itinerary with total disregard for the weather conditions and its unpredictability. – Horse ride on Siros, dinner reservation in Skorpios on Mykonos, wine tasting on Santorini starting at 9 am sharp on a Saturday morning – you need Poseidon’s blessing to commit to that…

Advantages of chartering a crewed catamaran in Greece

• Lower fuel consumption compared to motor yachts.
• Lower cost, especially for catamarans under 50 ft.
• Shallow draft – you can get quite close to secluded beaches and white sands with a catamaran charter.
• Access to the dock – especially in high season, bigger yachts might need to stay out of the harbor and access with a dinghy.
• Captain + stewardess still the most common crew combination (keeps the costs down), bigger – motor yacht like luxury catamarans are on the rise (with more crew).
• Gratuity – a 10% gratuity paid after the Catamaran charter is considered completely satisfactory in Greece. Compare that to the (up to) 25% mandatory gratuity that is increasingly being demanded in escrow pre-charter in the Caribbean or the Bahamas.
• Use of water toys and water sports – rules are more relaxed and definitely less enforced compared to France or Italy – it’s not the same if you get on a jetski in a secluded bay on Iraklia or in the overcrowded Gulf of St Tropez.

Disadvantages of chartering a catamaran in Greece

• Low speed mandating a limited itinerary or a lot of sailing hours – It is not unusual for a catamaran charter to move before sunrise to break it up. Can be mitigated by starting in the destination – Mykonos, Santorini, Lefkada (Ionian), Patmos or Ikaria (Dodecanese), Skiathos (Sporades – Mamma Mia Islands)
• Smaller crew – used to be 2 crew members, now growing (it’s both a positive and a negative) as per your price sensitivity. Compared to the Caribbean – there are more options.
• Vertical layout – 2 or 3 decks on a horizontally constrained area.

Catamarans vs Motor Yachts

Charter yachts are rapidly growing in size, keeping up with an ever increasing demand for the most luxurious vessel on the market. – In 2020 , the average length of a crewed catamaran was 45 feet . Where, at the end of 2023, the average size of a new catamaran charter was 67 feet .

Given a crazy expansion of the crewed catamaran fleet (demanding a whole new boat show to accommodate this segment starting in 2023 ), the catamarans are getting closer in onboard capacity to motor yachts.  If you’re looking to get a recent Lagoon 52 catamaran sailing charter with crew, inquire early.

As mentioned ealier Power catamarans will generally have a lower fuel consumption,  with comparable deck space at the expense of speed. Catamaran charter will be able to get closer to the beach and will get to marinas easier than a huge motor yacht that had a change of itinerary and is looking for a last-minute spot on the dock (and will probably anchor out, hailing the guests from shore with a dinghy).

With the deck space being comparable in Catamaran Charter- the choice is yours – are you looking for a wider deck that’s arguably more casual for a group to sit down, or are you looking to have a bottle of something really nice served to you on the aft deck of a Ferretti motor yacht ?

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece. 

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter. 

• A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
• A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria. 

The three tax brackets are as follows; 

• VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
• VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters. 
• Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures. 

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination. 

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens. 

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

• Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
• Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.

Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

Greece catamaran charter areas

There are four main areas for chartering a catamaran in Greece: the Cyclades Islands , the Saronic Gulf , the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanes Islands. One cannot explore all of the areas in one charter.

Even one area can only be partially explored in a week’s charter (with a possible exception of spending a couple of days in the Saronic area and then doing a long crossing over the Cyclades for the rest of the week, if the weather allows). Two of the areas can be combined for longer than a week charter. You need to work with your broker and captain to decide on the islands most suited to you.

Great winds for sailing

One of the benefits of choosing a catamaran charter is the ability to be able to make the most of its sails. Wind conditions in Greece tend to be great for sailing in much of the spring, summer and autumn seasons.

If you are a keen sailor make sure your captain knows in advance so your route can be created to optimise the opportunities for sailing. But it is important to note that Greece is also well known for the Meltemi wind that blows strongly in July and August, particularly in the Cyclades area. During those periods, it is often not possible to sail in the Cyclades.

Greek charter season 

Greece, like the rest of the Mediterranean, experiences its High Season or Peak Season in July and August. Mid-Season or Shoulder season as it is sometimes referred to, occurs in June and September. Low season is then in May and October. Due to the different areas available for charter, some areas are better suited to particular months. 

Catamaran Crew

The Crew on board your catamaran is a vital part of ensuring your charter is the best it can possibly be. The number of crew on board will vary depending on the size of catamaran, however most catamarans will have between 2 and 4 crew members.

The crew can be comprised of a Captain, Host/Hostess, Chef and Deckhand. On the majority of yachts, the crew will be made up of Greek nationals who are very knowledgeable and experienced in sailing the Greek waters.
