If you could sail, swim, and celebrate on repeat each day for a week until you’re happily exhausted, you’d do it, wouldn’t you? Well, boating has just the event for that: Yacht Week. Haven’t heard of it? Here’s a Yacht Week Beginner’s Guide :

First, what is Yacht Week? 

If you’ve never heard of The Yacht Week , it’s called the original floating festival. You stay aboard a skippered boat with a bunch of your friends, cruising alongside other like-minded travelers. 

A skippered boat is a boat with someone who is in command of it, more or less equal to a captain! This gives your crew opportunities to focus on the fun and potentially learn boating from an experienced guide. 

Options exist for per- cabin bookings, too. Regardless, for seven days, you explore convoy-style, visiting picture-perfect destinations like Croatia, Turkey, Tahiti, and the British Virgin Islands. While you have the freedom to follow your own itinerary, you get your skipper’s first-hand knowledge of where to go and what to do. 

You can dine onboard or ashore , soak up the sun on secluded beaches, and of course, swim. Come at nighttime, and join your fellow adventurers at organized parties on the beach and in clubs. Or, simply star gaze on deck before drifting off to sleep.

Yacht Week’s brief history

The Yacht Week got its start nearly two decades ago. Directors and founders Eric Biorklund and William Wenckel worked for the same company as charter-boat captains in Europe when inspiration struck. A two-week period in Greece was so much fun that they became fast friends with their guests. Figuring they could replicate the success, they reserved 10 yachts for traveling together for a subsequent summer in anticipation of attracting 100 guests. It worked. They then added another five yachts to that total, which also filled up. Guests had so much fun, in fact, that they requested Biorklund and Wenckel arrange more trips. Soon the duo had more cruisers than staterooms available. So, they turned it into a dedicated business, and The Yacht Week was born.

With another business partner onboard, Biorklund and Wenckel set their sights on growing The Yacht Week internationally. That, too, worked. The company went from booking 30 boats in 2006 to more than 1,300 within a decade.

The Yacht Week is more than just skippered boats; the goal is to provide you with experiences you’ve never had before! For example, if you’re into techno, house music, and similar styles, the Croatia Ultra Route dates in July coincide with the Ultra Europe EDM festival. Pro Tip: Your yacht package includes VIP tickets. 

While music is a big part of The Yacht Week—and cruising in general—other itineraries are more about the destinations and camaraderie. 

From May through September, for instance, trips depart from Athens, Greece, and head to a number of islands. To ensure you get to know your fellow cruisers, a raft-up (anchoring your boat side by side) kicks off the first day. 

Each day for the rest of the week, you can explore ancient sites and towns with guides on foot or drive an ATV through the countryside. Fun costume parties, White Parties (where you wear all white), and more occur each day, too. 

To cap off the summer in style, book one of two available weeks (at presstime) in Turkey in September. You’ll enjoy the country’s famed Turquoise Coast, along its southwestern shore, starting out in Fethiye. When you go sightseeing, don’t miss the chance to partake in a Turkish bath. You’ll emerge with your skin feeling invigorated and an amazing story to share.

Pro Tip: Speaking of sharing, you’ll be sharing picture after picture on social media with your friends and family back home. The Yacht Week also has professional photographers and videographers on hand during each itinerary to ensure the best moments get captured. 

Get a feel for boating 

If you’re curious about how the boat operates, feel free to ask questions. Captains love sharing their knowledge and passion, so you can take a turn at the wheel as well. Plenty of cruisers become friends, too, with their fellow passengers, planning future cruises upon returning home. That’s what ultimately makes The Yacht Week a week to remember for a lifetime.

Food - Cabin Booking

A host and food is included in all cabin booking, excluding Classic Monohull. They will cook 6 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 2 dinners during the week. On the nights when you eat on land, please remember to include your skipper and host in your dinner plans, as they will also need feeding.

Alcoholic and soft drinks are not included in any booking. You will shop for all your drinks on check in day, or can order a drinks package. Grabbing some from duty free can also be a great way to save some cash.

Food - Yacht Booking

Food is not included for any full yacht bookings. Head to the supermarket on check in to buy your provisions for the week. If you choose to add a host, they will take care of meal plans and shopping. They will cook 6 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 2 dinners during the week.

Port fees & fuel

Port fees are payable on arrival at each island you visit. These vary depending on yacht size, location and dates. Both Fuel and Port Fees go towards the kitty amount.

Water & Water Taxis

Your yacht will be topped up with water. Some nights you will be away from dock, you’ll need to grab a water taxi so take you to the events.

Yacht Deposit

If you have booked a full yacht, The Charter Companies require payment of a refundable deposit on the first day. See here for more information.

Cabin Damage Waiver Fee

If you have booked a cabin you have two options, a non-refundable damage waiver fee or a refundable security deposit payment. See here for more information.

Transfers to & from airport

You’ll need to make your own way to the marina from the airport - if you are taking a taxi, make sure to take out cash first!

Tipping is customary in the marine industry. So if your skipper and host have given you an amazing week, please consider tipping them for their services.

Alcohol & eating out

Some nights you will eat out in the local bars and restaurants. Remember Your Skipper and Host need watering and feeding while you're away from the yacht!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As people across Jacksonville learn more about the new stadium deal , downtown development is also getting a lot of attention.

Beyond EverBank Stadium upgrades, Jaguars owner Shad Khan is also investing in other projects.

A Four Seasons hotel has been in the works, but Khan is planning to add more to the area that stretches down Bay Street to the Shipyards.

The Four Seasons hotel is expected to have 170 rooms, private residences and a rooftop restaurant.

According to our news partners at the Jacksonville Daily Record , the city is reviewing plans for a component of development at the Shipyards. Khan wants to build a marina, and Khan’s development company, Iguana Investments Florida, filed that project for review Wednesday.

Blueprints show buildings, an event lawn, riverwalk and restaurants that would all be next to the hotel.

The Record says the city issued a permit a week ago for Khan to build a 6-story office building next to the hotel. It is costing the Jaguars owner close to $40 million.

Projects like these are necessary to develop downtown, residents said.

“Downtown is lacking a lot of things,” said Samuel Clermont. “The [former] Landing was the big thing that I used to go to when I was younger. There’s nothing there anymore. We definitely need those things down there as well. The hotels, places to go and places to hang out.”

All of those plans are coupled with the possibility of EverBank Stadium being renovated to transform into what is being called the “Stadium of the Future.”

The Jaguars and the city announced earlier this week that they have agreed to a deal and released details of the plan , which still needs to get approval from the city council, which could come as soon as June. It would also need a final nod from NFL owners, which could happen when they meet in October.

If the deal is ultimately approved, construction could start in February 2025.

Jags president Mark Lamping says there is a reason why Khan is making these kinds of investments.

“[Khan] sees the momentum of the city and he believes in the people,” Lamping said. “He owns the football team, and he wants the best possible thing for the city. This is not just the benevolence of a person. Shad understands that as downtown Jacksonville goes, if downtown Jacksonville is successful, that is going to have a positive impact on the success of the Jaguars.”

If everything goes as planned, the Four Seasons could open in 2026.

Hitler’s yacht sits off the coast of this Florida beach. Here’s why

The ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

• Smoke stacks
• Radio towers
• A water tower
• Oil rig structures
• A railroad barge
• A minesweeper warship

Thursday Night Mowing League 2024: Week 5 -- Super Bowl Champion Joins The League

Welcome to our first super bowl champion league member - lomas brown.

Let me start this week by welcoming a former elite NFL road grader and pass protector to the league. Lomas Brown sent in his first TNML contribution on Thursday, via my old friend Anthony Bellino, who is radio partners with Super Bowl champion (S.B. XXXVII with Tampa) on WJR-AM in Detroit. 

I don't know exactly how this all went down, but I have a hunch Bellino has been talking about TNML and he knows Lomas takes pride in his property. One thing leads to another and Lomas is declaring his allegiance to the best night in mowing. 

I'll speak for the league: We're honored to have a guy like Lomas joining the group. While I've never personally met Lomas, I hear enough from Bellino to know that we got ourselves a good one. 

While Lomas is the first Super Bowl champion to join the league, he's not the first former NFL guy to be enamored by the prestige of TNML. That goes to a former BCS champion who won Bednarik and Butkus trophies. 

The lesson here is that there are eyes on this league and your efforts to take pride in your property and community aren't going unnoticed. You're playing against guys who've been icons on the field. Now you're icons of mowing that they're trying to beat. 

Commissioner's report: 

I'm in a tough spot right now. Without taking an official measurement, I believe my mower deck is at 4 ½ inches. That's a recipe for disaster this time of year when we're getting waves of rain followed by sun and humidity. The turf is EXPLODING. 

It will be nice when we can settle back into a once-a-week pattern. 

The other big news is that we had our very first frog in the garden – that we know of. Mrs. TNML is a huge fan of frogs, so it was a big week around here. She'll be talking about that for years.  

League standings: 

• Fink, Diesel and Timmy2Cuts staying as the top three
• Colt Bradford stays in the No. 4 slot because I'm not penalizing for missing a week due to rainouts. 
• Justin E. in GA slides into the No. 5 slot because he got it done on league night and by done I mean he got his backyard Par 3 hole dialed in for a big weekend in Augusta where there's a backyard Par 3 challenge. 
• That's what Adam Dolezal was up against. It's tough to stay in the top five week after week. The good news for Dolezal is that Justin E. in GA slows down a little when the heat builds. That No. 5 slot will keep revolving.

Our first patio night of the summer. My wife and her friend and yacht rock. I hope you’ll love that I asked my landscape company to mow our lawn on Thursdays. It’s the best I can do. They said ok!! Ha.

Had a very wet 5.5" mow of 2 1/3 acres of my side yard (we call it the field) that doesn’t get mowed as often as the 2 1/2 acre yard by the house. Had 1" of rain Tuesday and Wednesday so some of it was too wet to get on. I’ve been able to get all of the property mowed at various times this spring, but still have not had a full 5-acre mow yet here in the 419. The ExMark mower, the DeWalt headphones, the David sunflower seeds and the post-mow Mich Ultra always help make Thursdays wonderful!

‘Pretty dangerous’: Yacht captain lends insights on area where teen killed in boat crash

He also says boat towing ella adler, 15, is ‘not ideal’ for wakeboarding.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – A Key Biscayne yacht captain is sharing insight into the area where 15-year-old Ella Adler lost her life over the weekend.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report said she was wakeboarding with someone else when she fell into the water near the Nixon Beach Sandbar and was struck and killed by the passing boater, who never stopped to help.

“She had the wakeboard on, she had fallen off from being towed, and she was just in the water waiting to be recovered by her vessel,” FWC Officer George Reynaud told “Good Morning America” Wednesday. “She was in the water, with her life jacket on, with her wakeboard attached at the time of the impact.”

Reynaud said, “Nixon Beach does have a sandbar where boats go to congregate, however, they were outside of that area.”

The report, released Wednesday, identified the operator as Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables.

Yacht captain Griffen Diaz spoke to Local 10 News on Wednesday. He said he was anchored at Nixon Beach, about a mile north of the crash, when it happened at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“My heart goes out to this girl’s family and everyone who was involved,” Diaz said. “I have been really heartbroken about this story.”

Diaz said the water was choppy that day.

“The wind and the waves were coming out of the west which is very unusual for Biscayne Bay, it is a rare wind occurrence and it makes the bay a lot choppier,” he said.

The yacht captain told Local 10 News the channel is known to be treacherous.

“It is pretty dangerous there to water ski because of the heavy traffic; I would never recommend it,” Diaz said, later adding, “The last thing someone would expect is to find (someone) waterskiing in the water in that heavy traffic area.”

Instead, he said, “If someone were to want to waterski or go tubing or any kind of water sports there’s an area right in front of Brickell, right in front of the apartment buildings in Brickell, actually just North of the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge and that is a safe area because it is away from a channel and it is a safe place to waterski.”

We’re also learning more about the boat towing Adler: a 42-foot Fjord.

“Which is not the ideal boat you want to be waterskiing on or pulling somebody with,” Diaz said. “The ideal waterskiing boat has one single engine and can turn on a dime and pick you right back up.”

Regarding the crash, he said, “If she let go of the rope or fell, and the captain did not notice, that would be negligent on his behalf because your eyes are locked on the person in tow and that is usually the rule we follow.”

Diaz said it’s possible that Alonso, who authorities said is cooperating with investigators, didn’t know he even hit Adler.

“The last thing someone would expect is to find a waterskier in the water in that heavy traffic area,” he said. “It was a four-engine boat, they could have been going at a high rate of speed (and) by the time they got close they didn’t even see her in the water.”

It’s not clear whether Alonso will be charged.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Divers, founder of the Bank of Tampa, dies

A. Gerald “Jerry” Divers, credited as the founder of the Bank of Tampa, died Friday. He was 88.

Divers was known across Tampa Bay for his contributions to the community, serving on dozens of professional and philanthropic board of directors from the Tampa Museum of Art to the Florida Association of Blood Banks.

Divers began his banking career at The Exchange National Bank of Tampa in 1961. He was the bank’s commercial lending officer, head of the trust department and eventually became the executive vice president and director.

He was the president of the Flagship Bank of Tampa. In 1984 the bank was sold to SunTrust, and because of that sale, Divers and a group of local investors purchased the Independent Bank of Florida. The name was changed to the Bank of Tampa to reflect the owners’ intention to serve Tampa’s local business and professional community. Divers served as president and CEO of the bank until 2008.

“Because of Jerry’s patient, kind, modest and effective leadership, The Bank of Tampa became a steady and well-respected institution,” said Corey Neil, the current president and CEO of the bank in a statement. “We are all better for having known him.”

The Bank of Tampa grew to become the largest community bank headquartered in Tampa Bay, according to the media release. During his many years in the industry, Divers served on the boards of 10 banks and was a director of the Community Banks of Florida.

Divers grew up in Clearwater and attended St. Petersburg College before graduating from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in banking and finance. He also attended the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School and served four years at the Naval Air Station Cecil Field near Jacksonville and aboard a ship in the Western Pacific Ocean.

After serving in the Navy Reserve for 15 years, he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, according to a media release.

He received many accolades for his work in Tampa Bay over the years, including the the Small Business Leader of the Year award from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the H.L. Culbreath Profile in Leadership Award. Last year, he was named the Tampa Metro Citivan’s 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

“Jerry’s legacy goes well beyond The Bank of Tampa,” Neil said in a statement. “He was passionately active in the Tampa Bay community through service to his church, and was generously philanthropic with his time and talents.”

For more than 20 years, Divers served as president of the Southwest Florida Blood Bank. He served on the board and also as an officer of the Florida Association of Blood Banks. He served on the boards of the American Blood Commission in Washington, D.C. and as chairman at the Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa for 17 years. He was chairman of the board of the Tampa Museum of Art and The Spring of Tampa Bay. Divers was also the president of the West Coast Florida Public Broadcasting.

In addition, he served on boards for the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Greater Tampa, Tampa General Hospital Foundation, the Children’s Home, the Lifelink Legacy Fund, the board of advisors of The Home Association and the Hillsborough County Bar Association Foundation.

Divers was also involved socially in a number of organizations in Tampa Bay, including as president of the University Club of Tampa and as treasurer and a member of the board of the Tampa Yacht and Country Club, a member of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, and the Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club.

He was a member of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church more than 50 years where he served for many years as a member of its vestry and senior warden.

Divers was the father of Alan G. Divers Jr. and Brett D. Divers, the latter who continue to remain involved in the The Bank of Tampa as members of the board of directors.
