Solaris 80RS leads a flurry of new yachts set to launch from the Italian yard

This Italian builder of stylish performance cruising and racing yachts has been busy developing an unprecedented four new designs to launch in one season – at 40, 60, 80 and 111ft

The Solaris 80RS is aimed at extended cruising in comfort

Renowned Argentine designer Javier Soto Acebal has worked with Solaris Yachts for the past 11 years and for these boats he has drawn powerful, clean contemporary lines with soft chines and subtle reverse bows. The result looks good, should prove fast and also provides a large volume below decks.

All four models have twin rudders and proportionately more volume above the waterline towards the ends of their hulls than earlier models. All, apart from the Solaris 60, have a forward chine, which confers plenty of additional form stability and helps lengthen the effective waterline when sailing.

However, these are not boats that have been pushed to extremes. “With Solaris we innovate in a wise way, with steady evolution, but without risk taking,” says Soto Acebal.

The extra form stability is intended to make for a more comfortable experience at sea for owners, who also have the added reassurance of the grip provided by the twin rudders. In addition, the wider hull sections forward prevent the bow from dipping when the boat is heeled – instead the forward chine gives dynamic lift.

Soto Acebal has taken time to create a clean long-lasting aesthetic alongside performance. “We want these to be boats to fall in love with for a long time, not just at a first glance,” he says. Styling across the range has therefore been kept as clean as possible, both inside and out.

The aft ends of the cockpits are open, with the helm stations pushed as far outboard as possible. This makes it easy to see tell tales and waves from the helm. “We want the helmsmen of these fast cruisers to feel the same benefits as sailing a racing yacht,” Soto Acebal explains. The arrangement gives more deck space when in harbour or at anchor, including a clearer route between the transom and companionway. Styling below decks is also as crisp as possible.

This design is geared more towards the needs of extended cruising in comfort and a higher degree of customisation is possible than for the two smaller Solaris models. On deck there’s a second relaxation area at the aft end of the cockpit for use when swimming or using watersports toys while at anchor. While the three different cockpit areas are clearly distinct, the sole is on a single level, which makes moving around easy.

Below decks are four spacious en suite cabins for the owner’s party, plus skipper and crew accommodation. Both owner aft and owner forward layouts are offered, with the latter having the galley and dinette located further aft in the boat to create more space for the master suite . In both cases the windows wrap neatly around the front of the coachroof to allow plenty of light into the saloon.

The first Solaris 80RS was launched in August and the second is already in build.

The new Solaris 40 is designed to appeal to keen sailors

This is a design intended to appeal to keen sailors who like to get the best from their boats, even when cruising . The twin wheels set outboard give a clear view forward to the jib tell tales, outside of the sprayhood.

The wheels are more than 1.5m apart, which gives a clear passage between the companionway and transom, facilitating stepping on and off the boat in port, and giving more space for sunbathing.

Solaris-40-new-yachts-layout

The combined effect of extra beam in the ends of the hull and longer waterlines allows the forecabin double berth to be positioned 20cm further forward, while extra volume is also available for the aft cabins.

Lockers are more voluminous than in the past and large hull windows boost natural light levels. The first Solaris 40 hit the water in September.

Solaris-60-new-yachts-aerial-view

A sportier style for the Solaris 60 to suit racing too

This step up in size allows for a more elegant layout, with a flush foredeck and low-profile coachroof. This racier styling is not simply skin deep – from the outset this was conceived as a boat that could compete successfully in Mini Maxi class offshore races , including the main annual event at Porto Cervo.

Below decks care has been taken to tuck the well-appointed galley out of sight – it’s a couple of steps lower than the main saloon. The extra volume in the forward sections of the hull helps to create a more spacious owner’s cabin.

The two aft cabins can be arranged as double or twins, and both benefit from an elongated portlight in the face of the cockpit seats, which helps to boost the natural light in these areas. This model also features a crew cabin and large fore-and-aft oriented tender garage.

The 111 is the largest yacht yet from Solaris

Solaris 111

The largest yacht in the brand’s history, the new Solaris 111 superyacht has had input from Lucio Micheletti, Patrick Roséo and MYT Monaco in the deck design and interior layout.

Despite its size and the level of comfort and space offered, Soto Acebal has again drawn a powerful performance hull, which has been constructed at Performance Boats facility in Forli.

Carbon pre-preg construction, along with carbon spars, keep weight to a minimum, while the telescopic lifting keel reduces draught from 6.05m to a more manageable 3.9m. The first Solaris 111 superyacht was launched in August 2020 and named CeFeA .

We are incredibly proud that our sailing flagship CeFeA, 111’ has been crowned Winner of the Yacht Design and Innovation Awards for the best sailing yacht design of the year 2021 – and that’s not all: the judges at last night’s Boat International World Superyacht ceremony have also selected CeFeA as the Judge’s Commendation Sailing Yacht 2021. The largest Solaris sailing yacht has definitely left its mark among the line-up of contemporary performance cruisers.

How it all started

Marc Giorgetti, a European entrepreneur, is a sailing passionate since his childhood. Meeting the Solaris boats, he declared: “I found a shipyard that designs and builds boats for those who sail, made up of real sailors, people attentive to seafaring, functionality, comfort in navigation rather than appearance and life in port. I had already owned boats from other prestigious European shipyards, but none of these showed me such attention to those internal and external details that guarantee comfort and safety even when the boat heels and in all sea conditions as I found at Solaris. And so, I fell in love with it”.

Since 2008 Marc Giorgetti has been committed as a shareholder in the development of the company, working hard and achieving truly exceptional results.

Since then, sales have multiplied by ten and today the Group is represented by 52 dealers worldwide with a consolidated turnover of € 56 million, 70% of which consists of exports, to which € 20 millions of CNB turnover must be added, for a total of € 76 million. Furthermore, Solaris Yachts has conquered the European leadership in the high-end fast-cruiser sailing sector.

Solaris has now become Solaris Group divided into four divisions differentiated by product and market of competence, but united by the outstanding quality:

•    Solaris Yachts: manufacturer of fast-cruisers from 40 to 80 feet; •    CNB Yacht Builders: recently acquired from the Bénéteau Group, manufacturer of ocean-going sailing boats from 60 to 90 feet; •    Performance Boats: high-end carbon hyper-technological maxi sailing yachts builder; •    Solaris Power: manufacturer of open and lobster motor yachts from 40 to 80 feet.

These different product lines materially express the will of the Solaris Group to affirm in each sector all the design, technical and construction characteristics that are its own and which give the boats exceptional qualities: seaworthiness, strength and stiffness and last but not least comfort in navigation. This is the hallmark of the Group, the main characteristic of each of the four companies and the underlying reason that has led to its success.

The famous build quality will be maintained and even further improved. The company will keep its focus on creating exclusive and highly customizable yachts for the expert owners.

Upcoming models in development

Solaris Yachts

The range of fast-cruisers has been enriched this year with two new models:

•    40 feet, smart all-rounder with all the famous attributes •    60 feet, avant-garde mini-maxi.

Solaris 40 is a very advanced 12 meters designed by Javier Soto Acebal, with many features that characterize hull performance and navigation comfort. The hull features a short chine ending mid ship. The highly buoyant bow is compensated by the extremely wide stern. The cockpit is extremely large. The two helm stations located full width allow the helmsman to steer even while the sprayhood is open. The interiors, created with the contribution of the architect Patrick Roséo, thanks to the shapes of the hull, are the largest in the category and offer truly innovative design.

The Solaris 60 water lines represent the latest design evolution by Javier Soto Acebal applied to the size of 18 meters, which guarantee a perfectly balanced hull, high performance also in regattas, and smooth open ocean navigation, plus all the standards of the exclusive Solaris construction technique. Solaris 60 was born from the concept of giving life to a high-performance fast cruiser that challenges racing boats, with an overall length of 18.31 meters. Solaris 60 will be a strong competitor in the Mini-Maxi circuit, whose main event is every year in Porto Cervo. A fundamental innovation of Solaris 60 is in the cockpit, where the helm station are at full width, as on the 40, allowing the helmsman to steer the boat outside the encumbrance of the sprayhood and to always have in view the luff of the jib. The position of the helm station allows to lower the lifelines in the stern part and raise them at the two steps to get on the side decks, a solution usually used only in boats over 140 feet. Aft, different seats are available for maneuvering and steering in different sea conditions, even when seated.

Both boats are equipped with a self-tacking jib and can be handled by a minimum crew even of just two people. They are on display and can be visited in the sailing section of Port Canto at the SAIL170 stand and SAIL032 moorings.

From 2022 the production of the CNB 66 and CNB 76 will be progressively transferred to the Solaris Yachts production site in Aquileia, where a plant completely dedicated to CNB is under construction. The synergy between the two production philosophies, Solaris Yachts fast-cruiser aimed at owners oriented to performance cruising and CNB aimed at owners not only looking for maximum comfort, but also lovers of long-range ocean navigation, will from now on go to advantage of the development of new models, respecting the identities of the two brands.

The CNB 8X will be unveiled in a few weeks, leading the way for a new era of CNB yachts. Thanks to the union with Solaris Yachts, the future of CNB yachts fits into a more dynamic and reactive structure, more suitable to support this exclusive market. A calibrated tool for the production of small series with a high level of quality and customization for each boat.

Performance Boats

Solaris builds custom maxi yachts at the cutting edge of technology. Since 2012 the yard has launched several units around 100’ for the Wally brand and has built three maxi sailing yachts for Solaris Yachts, the latest of 111′, CeFeA, for Marc Giorgetti. Currently under construction is a hyper-technological 100-footer whose hull, deck and bulkheads are contained in the incredible weight of only 11,550 kilograms. With a ballast of a total weight of 21,400 Kg, composed by the lifting keel of 5,100 Kg and by the bulb of 16,300 Kg the furnished boat arrives to a final displacement of 50,000 Kg.

Performance Boats uses pre-preg carbon technology, even in high modulus, which combines the best weight control with the stiffness and quality of the product. Also the smallest detail is made in full carbon.

The division is equipped with one of the largest and most technologically advanced post-cure ovens in Europe measuring 40 x 11 x 5 meters, which can reach temperatures up to 90° C heated by diathermic oil, in which it is possible to carry out work on hulls up to 40 meters.

Performance Boats has a very advanced interior fitting department, capable of producing ultra-light furniture with aeronautical technology on a mold with pre-impregnated Kevlar or aluminum honeycomb materials.

A team of highly skilled and experienced international technicians from Great Britain, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal and Spain work alongside the Italian team of Performance Boats.

  • Solaris Power

It made its debut in 2018 with the modern re-edition of the lobster boat, a traditional New England lobster fishing boat, combining the charm and elegance of a historic boat with the Group’s technology. This philosophy has led to a new milestone in performance, behavior at sea, technology and stylistic research. The result is yachts with a unique personality that stand out for their elegance, originality and performance at the top of the category, which are also very popular among the sail lovers. The open range has been developed on the hulls of the lobster versions, which re-proposes the same marine qualities in a more Mediterranean key, conceived for owners who love to sail.

The range of the power open and lobster boats is enriched by the new 44 Open, which actually before being presented to the public here in Cannes, where you can visit it at the stand QSP 151 – mooring QSP 026, has achieved considerable sales success with 10 units delivered. The 44 Open model offers the largest outdoor living area in the category.

Also on its way is the new Solaris Power 40 Open which will be presented at the next “boot” in Düsseldorf 2022 and the flagship 60 Open, which will touch the water in 2023, is at its final stage of design.

At the Solaris Power stand you can see the 48 Open, winner of the European Powerboat of the Year 2020 award, the comfortable lobster version of the same hull and the Lobster 57 model at anchor in Cannes’ bay.

The outlook for the year 2022 is to grow in all segments, thanks to the new models of each company, and the fact that the production of the nautical year Sept 21 – Aug 22 is already almost sold out. The expansion of the sales and service network, which today counts 52 points between Europe, USA, Russia, Asia, and Australia is in continuous development.

Solaris Yachts

If today we can still appreciate so many of the boats that have survived the last century, excellent Classic Boats that are still able to excite, credit is undoubtedly due to the hands and minds behind their creation. We have already seen some of the great designers behind the signatures, but, if these boats have since seen the light of day, it is certainly also thanks to the yards behind them, enlightened realities capable of maintaining quality standards that are still commendable today. In this micro-series, aimed at celebrating some of the great shipyards, we have already seen such brands as Hallberg Rassy , Dufour , Cantieri del Pardo e Baltic Yachts . Now, it is time to celebrate another great Italian reality, Solaris Yachts .

Solaris Yachts

Solaris Yachts – Origins as Se.Ri.Gi

The 1970s are, for boating, the real discovery of a new frontier. Fiberglass has just entered the market with force, and serial production of quality hulls is beginning to establish itself as not only a concrete, but also a qualitatively important and pursuable reality. At the same time, the IOR and new concepts launched sailing into a new season, opening the era of major regattas in parallel with a real boom in yachting. So many suddenly can afford to go boating. In this context, construction sites are springing up just about everywhere, but not all of them are destined to remain excellences, surviving for a long time. This is not the case for Solaris, which, born in Aquileia in 1974 as Se.Ri.Gi, instead offers us a cross-section of boating now nearly 50 years old. A history of boats and success marked by various innovations and some of the biggest names.

Solaris Yachts

It all began in 1974 in Aquileia. Along the Natissa River, which flows directly into the upper Adriatic, a place that has always been permeated by seafaring tradition. The Se.Rigi.Gi (now Solaris) construction site opens here. The shipyard’s early work is initially staging operations of others’ designs and productions, including hulls from the Benello shipyard, but the build quality and attention to detail immediately caused a stir, bringing the fledgling shipyard into the good spotlight and into a new direction. In 1977, however, the entrepreneurial spirit of the shipyard decided to initiate a first round of autonomous projects, relying from the outset on signatures of all quality. Thus were born the brand’s first two boats, the Solaris 37 , designed by Frans Maas, and the Solaris 47 , signed by Sparkman & Stephens.

Solaris Yachts

Doug Peterson and the “eighties”

The 1980s were the yard’s first real moment of affirmation, with the Solaris brand now becoming a synonym for prestigious and qualitatively impeccable boats. These are the establishment years of the Solaris 36 and the subsequent Solaris 39 by Maas, an improved revision of the 37′, now even more refined in its lines and comfortable in its interior, qualities that would make it an evergreen, synonymous with performance and safety.

Solaris Yachts

The big hit of the 1980s also came with a new pen to sign off on the projects, archistar Doug Peterson, who in 1984 signed a cult site, the Solaris One , true bluewater ante-litteram , a boat that concedes nothing to IOR ratings and whose sole purpose is to sail the best, anytime, anywhere.

Solaris Yachts

The mid-1980s thus began to see a decisive establishment of Solaris, which, taking advantage of its own boom in orders, extended its production area. In 1985 the area becomes 7,000 square meters, more than 2,000 of which are indoor and with facilities capable of accommodating boats up to 25 meters in size. Some of the brand’s other major projects were born during this period, including the Solaris 48 (in racer and center cockpit variants) and the Solaris Two . But, excelling over all, is here the Solaris Zero signed by Doug Peterson in ’87, 65 feet strong and designed to be a true offshore fast-cruiser.

The litmus test of the 1990s

With the 1990s comes a showdown. The beginning of the decade, in fact, is marked by a period of major economic recession, the trigger for a significant sectoral crisis at the European and global level. Solaris responds with inventiveness, however, coping with the problems by diversifying on several fronts. The production of new models is thus flanked by the parallel refit and refitting, combined with the opening of several external collaborations. Among these, important to note, is a production phase with Fincantieri in Monfalcone that allows the brand to gain know-how in relation to the use and processing of composite materials.

However, the decade did not see the production of new models stop and, indeed, saw the birth of boats of the caliber of the Solaris 55 CC and the yard’s flagship, the Solaris Zero 76′ by Peterson.

solaris yachts italy

Building on the experience developed with Fincantieri, the 1990s also saw Solaris produce the innovative Solaris 62 , built in advanced composite with glass fabrics, Kevlar, carbon and epoxy resins.

Solaris Yachts – The 2000s

With the new millennium Solaris asserts itself and focuses production on an increasingly semi-custom-directed front. Hull molds thus become the main component of boat similarity, but the entire realization of volumes and layouts can now change, adapting to specific owner needs. It was in 2001, however, that the two projects that, more than any other, gave the shipyard a fresh imprint and, more importantly, put it in the spotlight as a brand capable of making high-tech, high-performance hulls. In fact, the Solaris 55 Open designed by Andrea Vallicelli and, in parallel, the Farr 52 IMS “Mascalzone Latino XI” , the latter intended to prepare the crew for the 2003 America’s Cup .

solaris yachts italy

With 2002, the yard further expanded its production area to about 26,000 square meters. The size attainable by built hulls is growing. At the same time, prototypes of the new series, the Solaris 44 and the Solaris 36 One Design . In 2006, however, the Solaris 48 signed by Bill Tripp, fully kicking off a new design season, mirrored 2 years later by the Solaris 60 , also by Tripp.

solaris yachts italy

In 2010 the shipyard, changing hands to a consortium led by G. Giuliani, became Solaris Yachts de facto, kicking off a new and further season, mainly the child of Javier Soto Acebal’s design hand. Among the most recent creations are the new Solaris 40 ST e Solaris 74 RS , about the latter of which we will have more news with the launching of the first unit later this year.

History of Solaris

Established in 1974, Solaris Yachts, a world-renowned boat manufacturer, began operations in Aquileia, an historical town of the Roman Empire, in the North East of Italy. Sergio Lombardi, the founder, envisioned the company to be a vanguard in building ocean-going yachts designed to handle serious offshore sailing in supreme comfort and safety. Guided by courage, competence, commitment and an unyielding desire for excellence, Lombardi steered the firm into the limelight of international boat building.

From the onset, Solaris Yachts exhibited an exceptional craftsmanship that stood out in the industry. It honed its expertise in building high-performance custom yachts, maintaining stringent quality control to ensure that each vessel was practical, safe, and aesthetically enchanting. Interestingly, one of the company's unique building methodologies is the infusion moulding system, which gives its yachts long-lasting rigidity and strength.

Despite significant expansion and evolution over the years, Solaris Yachts continues to base its operations in Aquileia today. The company has kept its integrity intact, creating boat models that give sailors an unparalleled mix of luxury and performance capabilities. It's not just about building boats for Solaris; it’s about creating marine masterpieces that speak frankly of innovation, functionality, and aesthetic elegance. This is why the name Solaris continues to make waves, from the calm waters of the marina to the turbulent currents of the open seas.
