The 9 Most Exciting New Yachts at the Venice Boat Show
The new motoryachts and electric powerboats at this week's salone nautico venezia made a perfect complement to the floating city's gondolas..
With its streets filled with water, the “Floating City” makes a perfect venue for a major boat show. This year’s nine-day event, which runs through Sunday, is without doubt the most relevant yet, focusing on sustainability and zero-emission electric marine power. Held in the city’s historic Arsenale district, Salone Nautico Venezia features more than 300 power boats and sailboats from almost 200 exhibitors. It wraps up with an E-Regatta parade of electric boats along the city’s landmark Grand Canal. Here are nine of the show’s highlight launches.
wallypower 58
Ferretti-owned Wally Yachts picked the Venice show to officially pull the wraps off its latest, go-fast projectile, the head-spinning wallypower 58. Inspired by the folded-paper design of the ground-breaking wallypower 118 from 2003, this sleek 58-footer uses triple Volvo IPS pods to punch the oversized dayboat to a top speed of close to 40 mph. With its trademark, raked-back windshield and head-spinning “shark gill” hull intakes, the new 58 expands its already spacious cockpit with a pair of fold-down hull wings. To avoid design-distracting portholes in the hull, the 58 features exterior cameras to project the view outside on to hi-def screens on each side of the lower salon.
Candela C-8
Those classy Venetian water taxis may look oh-so elegant, but they throw-out huge wakes that can erode the “Floating City’s” fragile walls and pilings. Which is why Swedish electric hydro-foiling builder Candela chose the Venice Boat Show to unveil the production version of its brand-new 28-foot C-8 dayboat. How come? At the C-8’s 34-mph top speed, it creates just a two-inch wake—about the same as an enthusiastically paddled Venetian gondola. Successor to Candela’s original 25-foot C-7, this more chiseled-looking flagship boasts a 58-mile range at its 27-mph cruising speed. The builder also chose Venice to introduce the P-8 limo-version , which it calls the world’s first foiling electric taxi. C-8 pricing starts at around $310,000.
Sanlorenzo SL106A
In addition to unveiling two new models that will preview at the fall shows—the SD90/S and SP100—Italian superyacht builder Sanlorenzo marked its first appearance at the Venice show with its SL106A, with the ‘A’ standing for “Asymmetric.” Using the same space-increasing design as the yard’s SL96A and SL90A models, this 106-footer does away with the port side deck to widen the salon, while adding full-height windows to flood the dining area with light. There’s also a fold-down terrace to starboard to open up the lounge area. Sanlorenzo’s designers have also reconfigured the garage space at the stern to allow for more water toys and a larger tender, while reworking the forward deck to integrate a more spacious dinette and sunpads.
Racebird E-1 Series Electric Raceboat
To spotlight next year’s high-action E1 electric powerboat race series, organizers used the show to unveil the first all-electric race boat built, the hydrofoiling RaceBird. It coincides with the recent announcement that the first team to sign up for the series will be entrepreneur Francesco Pannoli’s Venice Racing Team. Inspired by the Formula E electric race car series, E1 is looking to race in iconic urban waterways, like Venice’s Grand Canal, Sydney Harbor, and off Rio de Janeiro’s Sugarloaf Mountain. Boats like RaceBird, powered by a new electric Mercury Marine outboard, will be able to hit a top speed of close to 60 mph and run for 40 minutes on a charge.
Absolute 58 Fly
When it comes to the new 56 Fly from Absolute Yachts, there’s almost more light-flooding glass than fiberglass. Huge, oversized hull windows are complemented by equally expansive superstructure glass, much of which is opened by a push of a button. This new 56 is the latest addition to the Italian builder’s burgeoning range of flybridge models that ranges from the 47 Fly to the flagship 72 Fly. The 56’s flybridge is one of its standout features, with a large dining area, sunpad, twin helm seats, modular sofas at the rear and outdoor kitchen. And much of the area is covered by a hardtop featuring power-generating solar panels.
The latest super-sized RIB from Italian builder LG made its global debut this week at the Venice show. The Anvera 58 focuses on offering fun in the sun with its oversized rear sundeck that can be expanded outwards with fold-down side sections. Forward in the cockpit is a table for six and a large, rear-deck sunpad that raises up to reveal a tender garage. When on the move, there are two rows of racecar-style bucket seats behind the helm, and a huge glass windshield and hardtop for protection. As one would expect, this new carbon-fiber-hulled 58 is blisteringly fast, courtesy of a pair of thundering 650-horsepower Caterpillar diesels with surface drives.
Monachus 70 FLY
It was a natural for boutique Croatian builder Monachus to add a flybridge top deck to its existing Monachus 70 coupé. Unveiled at the Venice show, this new 70 Fly adds even more outdoor space to this striking express cruiser. While the 70 sedan’s smallish superstructure doesn’t allow for a huge upper deck, the builder put the available space to good use, incorporating a U-shaped dinette, sunpad and two-seat helm. That outdoor helm is perfect for enjoying the 40-mph wind-in-the-face top speed from the twin 1,000-hp Volvo D13 IPS1350 diesels.
Azimut 66 Magellano
Unveiled last year, the smallest in Azimut’s retro-themed Magellano fast-trawler line-up made its Venice debut this week, maybe just to remind show-goers of Italy’s design and boat-building skills. This 66 Magellano stands out with its lovely “old-school” touches, like its glowing teak cap-rails and distinctive horizontal teak side-cabin strakes. But there’s nothing old-school about the way this new 66 is built, with its smooth-riding, semi-planing double-chine hull, and expansive carbon-fiber flybridge and hardtop. It also puts the fast in fast-trawler, using a pair of 850-hp MAN six-cylinder diesels to push it to a top speed of 26 mph.
Italian cruiser builder Sessa Marine chose the Venice show to debut the newest addition to its lineup, the 37-foot C3X. Choices range from Open, Hard Top or T-Top versions, plus the builder offers a choice of inboard or outboard power. Built at Sessa’s Bergamo facility, northeast of Milan, the entry-level C3X weekender is big on quality and craftsmanship. Oversized hull windows brighten up the cabins, which include a forward master and large king-bedded VIP beneath the rear cockpit. Twin 250-hp outboards or a pair of 300-hp Volvo diesels both deliver a top speed of over 40 mph.

Highlights from the 2023 venice boat show.
Venice, the Masked Queen of the Adriatic, has a lifelong relationship with boating yet only recently established a yachting event – and it’s not one to miss.
Held in the Arsenale of Venice, the historic centre of the city’s naval industry and just a 15-minute walk from Basilica di San Marco, the 4th Edition of the Venice Boat Show brought together more than 220 exhibitors and 300 vessels docked in the city’s iconic basin.
The show is diverse and the boats on display ranged from small RIBS and chase boats to sub-40-metre motor and sailing yachts. There were also plenty of representatives from leading builders, such as Fincantieri, Ferretti, Wider and Sunseeker, ready to discuss larger projects. But the added appeal of the Venice Boat Show is that it’s a show of firsts – new builders, brands and many debuts. Here is the rundown of some of the hottest new yachts and projects:
36.8m | Ocean King | Vayus | 2023
The Venetian builder Ocean King claimed flagship status, bringing the largest from its brand-new Ducale series. Designed by VYD Studio with naval architecture by InNave, the steel-hulled motor yacht offers 334 GT of interior volume and accommodation for as many as 10 guests and seven crew. She has plenty of alfresco space and features two large Jacuzzis: one aft and the other on her sundeck.
24.06m | Wally | wallywhy150 | 2023
Nestled at the end of the dock was the striking first unit from the wallywhy150 series, the smaller sister to the wallywhy200 which debuted at Cannes last year. There’s been a lot of buzz around the 24.06-metre wallywhy150 – and rightly so. With an interior volume of 150GT and LWL under 24-metres, the wallywhy150 has the living space of a large yacht and the benefits of not being LYC classified. The wallywhy150 offers accommodation in four staterooms, including a stunning forward owner’s suite with 270-degree panoramic views.
18.41m | Omikron Yachts | OT-60 | TBC
Omikron Yachts, a newcomer from Greece, presented a prototype of its 18.41m OT-60. The philosophy behind the OT-60 is the feel of a sailing yacht with motor yacht credentials. The OT-60 is beamy, easy going and informal, yet doesn’t require the technical skills for navigation. It also boasts an impressive 1,000-nautical mile range. An interesting concept and one that will likely grow in popularity.
23.47m | Fabiani Yachts | Fabiani Yacht 77” Hybrid | TBC
Another newcomer is Italy’s Fabiani Yachts, which presented a fleet of concepts in the indoor exhibition area. Fabiani Yachts has created an eco-conscious line of motor yachts that adopts the same philosophy of Silent Yachts and Sunreef yet in a smaller package. Unlike Silent Yachts and Sunreef though, Fabiani Yachts have unique solar panel configurations that can fan out to catch the sun whilst the yacht is at anchor. Its first project, the Fabiani Yacht 77” Hybrid is well into construction, with the keel laid in April 2022.
Other notable yachts presented at the event include the Arcadia Sherpa 80, the Pershing 9X, the Nevatta 75, the Azimut 68 and the Nautor Swan 65.

One victim of brutal Venice attacks is declared brain-dead, sources say

A victim of last month’s attacks in the Venice canals was declared brain-dead after a monthlong coma, sources confirmed to The Times on Tuesday.
Two women were severely beaten and sexually assaulted in attacks that occurred one after the other on April 6 between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m., the Los Angeles County’s district attorney’s office said last month in a statement.
The first attack occurred in the 2700 block of Strongs Drive when a woman was approached from behind and struck with a hard object. The second woman was attacked in a similar way, police said, less than a mile away near Sherman Canal.
Both women were alone when they were attacked.
The woman who was declared brain-dead was reportedly visiting from Massachusetts and staying at a nearby Airbnb the night of the attack. She has not been publicly identified.
“We are aware of the tragic circumstances surrounding one of the victims of last month’s brutal sexual assaults at the Venice canals,” the district attorney’s office told The Times on Tuesday. “Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. Our office is evaluating how we will proceed to ensure the defendant is held fully accountable for his conduct.”
Last month, the district attorney’s office charged Anthony Francisco Jones, 29, on multiple counts for the attacks, including rape, torture and attempted murder.
A second victim, a Venice resident, was also badly beaten. According to a recent message posted to a GoFundMe on her behalf, she has been released from the hospital but is unable to work for some time until she’s fully healed. The fundraiser has received nearly $100,000 for her care.
She previously spoke with KTLA-5 from her hospital bed. She said her teeth were “knocked out” and that, although the details of the attack were fuzzy, she remembered being on the ground.
“I think he was trying to kill me,” she said of the assailant.
The Times generally does not identify victims of sexual assault.
Los Angeles City Councilmember Traci Park, whose district includes Venice, said in a statement Tuesday that she was “devastated to receive this news about the victim in the horrific Venice Canals attack.”
“My prayers are with her family in this moment of loss and I want to extend my condolences on behalf of the entire Venice and Westside communities,” Park said. “While nothing can reverse this terrible tragedy, I hope the family is able to feel solace knowing that the perpetrator of this crime has been apprehended and justice will be served.”
Times staff writer David Zahniser contributed to this report.

What turned Venice's Grand Canal green over the weekend? Authorities identify substance
The green coloring comes amid venice’s vogalonga boat event, a celebration of venetian traditions that calls for attention to the venetian environment, nature and architecture biennale..
A blob of fluorescent green water that appeared in Venice’s iconic Grand Canal over the weekend has spurred an official investigation.
On Sunday morning, water taxis and gondolas waded through a patch of fluorescent green water that appeared to grow slowly near the landmark Rialto Bridge , an act that Venetian authorities suspect could be linked to environmental activist groups.
No group has claimed responsibility for the green liquid that appeared in the water yet. While local police investigate a number of leads, officials are “conducting analysis to establish the nature of the substance in the water,” with expected results later this week, Italy’s fire brigade tweeted. Quartz' Ananya Bhattacharya reported that the substance dumped in the waters has been identified as fluorescein, an organic dye commonly used for diagnosing eye problems that poses no risk of pollution, Veneto’s governor Luca Zaia announced in a Tweet on Monday .
Earlier this month, climate activists from the “Ultima Generazione” group – which translates to “Last Generation” – climbed into the Trevi Fountain , poured black vegetable charcoal into the water and held up banners saying "We won't pay for fossil (fuels)" in Rome. The group asked “for an immediate stop to public subsidies to all fossil fuels” after deadly floods hit Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, the group said in a statement on their website.
The group denied involvement with the stunt when asked by CNN's Barbie Latza Nadeau and Sophie Tanno.
Has Venice's Grand Canal changed color before?
During the annual 1968 Venice Biennale, Argentine artist Nicolás García Uriburu transformed the canal waters green with Fluorescein, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET).
The act was not part of the festival's official program. According to the MET, Uriburu used the "ecologically harmless" dye to show "the relationship between nature and civilization and to promote ecological consciousness as a critical part of culture."
