Dear Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club, I am writing to bring to your attention an unacceptable behavior exhibited by one of your managers at the yacht club. On Thursday January 26th, I was in the club lobby when I witnessed a manager engaged in a heated argument with a club member. During the argument, the manager told the member that if they dont like what she is saying then maybe they should not return to the club and made them feel unwelcomed. This type of behavior is not in line with the standards of professionalism and hospitality that I expect from a manager of a yacht club. As a member of this club, I was extremely disturbed by what I saw and heard, and I know that several employee's who were present in the lobby at the time of the incident felt the same way. I believe that it is essential for the yacht club to maintain a welcoming and respectful environment for all members, and I am concerned that the manager's behavior may have a negative impact on the overall experience of club members. I request that you investigate this matter and take appropriate action to address the manager's behavior and ensure that all members feel valued and respected. For the Boater: The Peninsula Yacht Club has 405 Wet slips with electric and cable for boats requiring those services. Our wet slips house a variety of power and sailboats of various sizes. The clubhouse features his and her member bathrooms with showers fully stocked with shampoo, body wash and lotion. The Marina also features a fuel dock offering regular and diesel fuel, two pump out stations, 5 transient slips, a fully stocked ship store for all your boating needs and a full service marina staff offering many concierge services. All services are available to our members six days a week. Additionally, The Peninsula Yacht Club is host to many boating events and activities. The club hosts the Friday night race series for sailors during the summer season and many sailors also participate in the Wednesday night races series on the lake.  There’s no rush, it’s another perfect day at The Peninsula Yacht Club.   For the Kids : We have multiple activities that run throughout the year for children of all ages. During the season we are the “hot spot” for summer camps, offering a variety of activities including Sailing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Arts & Crafts, Swimming, Land Games, Toddler Camp and Wakeboarding Clinics. Peninsula Yacht Club will waive December dues after 3-month clubhouse closure

Nov. 12. By Dave Yochum. A member mutiny at the Peninsula Yacht Club may have been averted with word that it will reopen in time for Thanksgiving dinner service indoors. The lakefront facility has been closed since Sept. 11, apparently because of water damage.

The club is as much a private business as a club, in that it is owned and operated by a huge, for-profit real estate investment trust.

Despite being closed for three months, members were required to pay dues of $154 a month, upsetting those who relied on the facilities for meal service and entertainment.

Repairs to the first floor

The reopening date of Nov. 5 came and went as PYC made “needed repairs to the first floor of the clubhouse and pool restrooms,” according to a message to members yesterday from Kathee Dishner, general manager.

She could not be reached for comment today.

The message said PYC will waive December dues for social memberships, which provide access to the dining room, a library and the bar.

New resignation policy

Those who want to resign can do so immediately, rather than wait six months as outlined in the membership policy.

“We would be sorry to see you leave, but we want the Club to be full of Members who are excited to be part of our family,” the message says.

The reopening date is Thanksgiving, with dine-in and take-out options.

The club and marina, which were owned by Morningstar Marinas, were purchased in July of 2020 by Safe Harbor Marinas. In October of 2020 Safe Harbor was acquired by a real estate investment trust (REIT) named Sun Communities Inc. for approximately $2 billion.

According to Millionacres.com, a Motley Fool real estate investing service, Sun Communities has focused on manufactured housing and RV communities. As of last year, Sun had interests in 426 manufactured housing and RV communities with more than 143,000 sites across 33 states and Canada. Its portfolio included 266 manufactured home communities, 126 RV communities, and 34 mixed communities.

The Safe Harbor acquisition last year brought with it 99 marinas, including Peninsula Yacht Club.

If I need to improve my sailing skills, will you teach me?

Yes. Members who are  American Sailing Association  certified instructors contribute their time to train and then to check-out new members as Skippers. The Club emphasizes safety in all boat activities.

What if I’m already an experienced sailor?

All you need to do is learn to operate our day-sailers, be checked out, and you’re a qualified Skipper. Move-ups to the cruising boats can be accelerated, provided you have been checked out on each Club boat as you progress.

What does it cost?

Base membership is $120 per Quarter, and covers day-sailers for qualified Skippers; $240 per Quarter on medium-level cruise boats (26 to 30 feet), and $360 Quarterly on the large-level boats (over 30 feet). Due on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. A refundable security bond is required for each level.

Why is the club so inexpensive?

Because everyone who joins is expected to volunteer to serve! This is the secret of our more than four decades of successful low-cost operation. The Commodore, Board Members, Boat Chiefs, Cruise Chairman, Sailing Instructors, Editor – ALL VOLUNTEER. If new members have previous sailing club experience, or boating talents, we all will benefit.

Where are the boats kept?

All boats are in the water, ready to sail. They are located in Dock G1400, Marina del Rey and at Peninsula Yacht Marina in Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.

Who is in the club?

Men and women, from age 20 and up, some single, some married, some with children. Some experienced sailors, some new to sailing.

I want to check t he club out – where do we meet?

Marina del Rey usually meets on the second Saturday of every month and Channel Islands Harbor, on the third Sunday of each month.  These are the best times to meet members of the Club and you will probably be invited to sail in the afternoon.  But these dates sometimes get changed, especially for Holidays e.g. the July 4 weekend.

Once I’m “checked-out”, how do I reserve a boat?

Reservations are made on-line through our website. A reservation guarantees you sailing time – even during the warm summer months.

When can I go cruising to Catalina, etc.?

As a crewperson, go as soon as you join. The Club has cruises each year to Two Harbors at the Isthmus; to Long Beach, and to King Harbor. To cruise as a Skipper, you must learn the boat; be checked-out; and have completed American Sailing Association courses.

Once I’m “checked-out”, Is there a boat for me?

Yes, boats are there for you to sail almost any time. However, as you improve and progress through the Club, you are expected to volunteer – TO RETURN THE HELP given to you by fellow Club members. You learn, you offer to teach and you serve newer members.

How are the boats maintained?

Each boat has a volunteer member assigned as Boat Chief. Major work is contracted, minor work is done by members working with the Boat Chief on Saturday work days or at other times.

What’s the catch?

There is none – except that each member is expected to contribute time and help to the Club in what ever way he or she can. Members serve as officers, as newsletter editor, as sailing instructors, as cruise chairperson, or by helping with boat maintenance.

Does the club carry insurance?

Yes, for both hull damage and liability. There is, however, a deductible amount – very similar to one’s automobile insurance.
