We enjoyed lunch here. Our server, Heather, was so sweet and awesome. The view is beautiful. Would definitely recommend a visit. Both the Virginia and Maryland sides of the restaurant.

We came here n Saturday, didn't seem too busy but tables stated they were understaffed... we got crab cakes and flounder but had to wait for our food for an hour. The food was not the best BUT our server was amazing. She was friendly and had smile on her face the whole time.

Photo of Missy H.

The food was mediocre at best. Crab dip and hush puppies were good but the salads were from a bag and the shrimp was delayed due to not being thawed out enough for it to be served when other meals were served. The food was way over priced for the quality. The waitress was nice but I would not recommend eating here.

Good location, but wish we had gone somewhere else for many reasons.... We went in about brunch time to get a late breakfast. There was ONE PERSON in the whole place (which really should have been a sign...), at the bar drinking margaritas on a Tuesday morning. We ordered Bloody Mary's to start as we looked over the menu. It took 15+ minutes to get them. And they really were not worth the wait or $7. Saying they were mediocre would be over selling them. And I am really unsure if they had alcohol at all, or if it was just tomato juice with a garnish. So we finally get to order, I get Chesapeake Eggs Benedict. I ask if I could have hush puppies with mine instead of home fries, and if they could come out first. Waitress says no problem. 15+ minutes later we get the hush puppies, and the weren't awful. 5+ minutes after that we get our meals. And mine is DEFINITELY not right. There is no crab, no old bay, and the hollandaise sauce is the consistency of mustard. When the waitress finally comes back to check on us, I tell her I don't think mine is right. She then said crab was extra. When I asked how this was a "Chesapeake" eggs Benedict, she looked confused and walked away. She did bring back crab for my meal tho. When we finally get the bill, I am surprised to see there is a $5 charge for hush puppies in Addition to our meals and drinks. I asked the waitress if they came with our meal why were we being charged extra? She said they "would have been more added to the meal, so I saved you money". WTH??? There was no mention of it being an up charge. At this point I was honestly so irritated with the whole experience we just paid the bill and left. I do not recommend this place at all. It was an awful experience and expensive. I really wish we'd gone somewhere else.

Enter through the Boardwalk on Colonial Beach, sits over the Potomac River so technically in Maryland. Offers off track betting for horse races and a pretty strong drink at the bar. That's where the enchantment ends with me. All the employees are miserable and are quite vocal about it. Bathrooms were clean but oddly decorated.

Sits in the river, so off track betting and Maryland lottery available.

We're very disappointed to see your review, Dianne. This is certainly not the standard for Riverboat and we'll use your review to improve for the future with our staff. We pride ourselves on great service and food. We hope you will join us again in the future. We're glad you enjoy the drinks and betting. Best, Penny F., Owner

Great location right on the boardwalk with a great view. This is the gambling scene at Potomac Beach. We were there around 9 p.m. during the Potomac River Festival, and it was dead. Perhaps 9 p.m. is too early, but that's when the karaoke was supposed to start. We didn't see any karaoke. It might've been more fun with a group of friends who were drinking and gambling, but for just my sister and me, we weren't impressed. The exterior is really quite an eyesore, too.

Jun 23, 2014

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, Lisa. We're disappointed to hear that the atmosphere wasn't what you were expecting during your visit. We pride ourselves on being a great place to grab a bite and enjoy some gambling. We don't currently offer karaoke and we're sorry about the miscommunication. We hope you will give us another chance to prove that to you. We're glad to hear you like the boardwalk. Best, Penny F., Owner

The view at the Riverboat is spectacular. I wish I could say the same about the rest of our experience. We visited on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when there was hardly anyone around. The outdoor seating area was great. The weather was gorgeous and the view was to die for. I could have sat there for hours talking in the sights. The food was okay. The seafood was good, as was my Reuben. However, the soup and vegetables tasted like they had come from a can, with the vegetable (green beans) looking pathetic and tasting 'funky.' My wife could not eat them. The price of the vegetables was removed from our bill, but only the waitress apologized. It would have been more appropriate if the manager had come and talked with us. What happened after dinner sealed the deal. My wife used the ladies room and recognized one of the other waitresses also using the facilities. This person left and returned to work without washing her hands. We also noticed this waitress smoking outside the main entrance of the building (less than 25 feet from the front door) upon our arrival. Needless to say, we will not be visiting the Riverboat again.

We spent good money to see a comedy performer here, and looked forward to a pleasant evening. The Riverboat had no security to control some drunken and obnoxious members of the audience who kept trying to make the show all about them. The performer repeatedly asked for assistance from the venue, including asking them not to serve the main guy causing problems more booze, and to not allow him to return from the bar to his seat, but they served him anyway. On his way back, he again disrupted the performer. This went on until the performer left the stage. Now the Riverboat wants to blame the entertainer for their lack of control of people acting like drunken jackasses. They are accepting no responsibility at all for their failure to handle this properly. NEVER again.

Very Disappointed with service and food today. Drove from Fredericksburg to come enjoy a nice meal only to be charged $20 for just a child to eat. Ordered hush puppies and a dozen chicken wings as our appetizer. The butter was rock hard. Asked for melted butter which never came as well as a refill that never came. The chicken wings where cold in the middle. When our food arrived the crab stuffed flounder wasn't even room temperature and the crab stuffed shrimp was lukewarm. When the chicken wings came out cold I initially thought it was the cook's fault. But as the evening went by our waitress mentioned our food was ready but it didn't bring our food out for several minutes. I also watched a cook bring food out and set it on the bar only for the waitress to take several minutes to take it to the table. Have to say not pleased about driving from Fredericksburg to Colonial Beach to spend $20 on 3 drinks, an order of hush puppies, Kraft Mac and cheese and a bun less hot dog.

Unfortunately, the nice view of this water front restaurant did not match the quality of the food. I ordered the Crab Cake entree with a side is hush puppies. The hush puppies were tasty and the Crab Cake was OK but fell a little flat. I would say that it was too shredded; getting lump crab would have been nice. The canned green beans that I didn't know I was going to get on my plate ruined everything for me. For a white table cloth restaurant, anything canned is a no no. The server did not know the menu, did not taste the menu, did not offer us coffee, or dessert. Unfortunately, a meh experience.

Riverboat on the Potomac

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We were looking for a nice meal and there are not a lot of choices on the beach. We flipped a coin and landed here. Let's say up front that our server Heather was as cute as she could be. She was flying around and... waiting on several tables and tried her best. Signs on the table announced that they were short staffed and be patient, and we were. I ordered the large prime rib, salad and the small baked potatoes. The prime rib was huge, tasty and perfectly cooked. My salad was good but I was not told it was an upcharge to replace a side with it. The potatoes came with melted butter which was melted margarine and not good. She had the crab stuffed shrimp, hush puppies and fries. The shrimp were not great and the rest were good. An uneven performance at best but one of the few places to get a meal that doesn't involve a diner. We did have a nice view of the water. More

We went summer of 2022 and it had gone downhill. We used to enjoy the Sunday brunch and watching the ponies run on all the screen, but it has become dirty and seedy. Hope they can clean it up, would love to go back.

They call themselves a casino because they have keno and horse bets. If you are thinking slots or cards you are way off base. Most people there are over 60 ish and look to be regulars. Great bloody marys but not so great food. Nothing... to do there but watch a bunch of keno and horse races on tv. More

Hi wyattdeb, We consider ourselves to be a casino because we have a public room where gambling occurs, which is the definition of a casino or gambling house. We agree the Bloody Marys are delicious! We hope to see you again soon for a game... More

I have found the food to be small portions and overpriced. Service is slow, and service is worse; only because they only have two girls working the dining room, bar and etc. for about 100 people. Recently had the wings, growly overcooked and difficult to... chew. I had to send them back as they were that bad. The nacho platter was good. They did away, to steam line the menu with the shrimp basket, which was excellent. More

This place is unique. Enter the building in Virginia, take ten steps and you are over the water and in Maryland. You can bet the ponies and play Keno in the Maryland side. The Virginia entrance has but one Virginia scratch off machine. I know... they tried to get slots installed but locals voted it down. ‘Tis a shame. We went for the food over the water and it was fantastic. Both of us got grilled scallops with cheese and they were great. Highly recommend this place for the food for sure. More

We just spent Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29 and 30, eating lunch and dinner at the new Riverboat. My parents came to visit form Shelby,NC and we all had a grand time. It took a long time to rebuild "THE BOAT" but it came back... better then ever! Thank you to all the owner, employees and just what a great time. Shirley and Catfish Lee More

I went to the Riverboat last night with my friends to celebrate my birthday early so everyone could come. We sat at the bar and had a great time. They had a good amount draft beers and a couple different ones I've never had before... like Goose IPA. The bartender was courteous, speedy and knew her stuff. We order a bunch of the finger foods and they were delicious. As we were leaving we grabbed a couple handles of whiskey and bourbon from there in-restaurant liquor store. It was a great way to spend a birthday. More

Went to the High Tides 100 yards away first but was invisible to them. So we went to the Riverboat where we sat at the bar , ate chicken tenders that were great. The bar maid was great. Music on the tv in front of... us (instead of sports.) Glad the High Tides didn't want to wait us. More

Waited at least 20 minutes for a waitress to come over to us, even though there was only one other table occupied. The crab balls had so much old bay seasoning on them that I sent them back. My daughter's fish was also way overseasoned,... as was her shrimp. Way over priced and just plain bad food and service!!!! More

Food was overpriced, limited selection, not prepared as ordered or in accordance with the menu, filet mignon was tough and had a toothpick hidden in it and service was slow. I tried the place because I purchased a coupon for it. The coupon was supposed... to be same as cash yet they put restrictions on it. Atmosphere leaves much to be desired, it is definitively tailored more to gambling than dining. More

While it might be a good idea to have OTB, this place needs help. We couldn't bring ourselves to give them our dinner business. We went to see the comedy show and it was excellent ! However, we didn't eat before we came because we were going to have dinner there - BIG MISTAKE! My husband ordered a drink in the bar area while we chatted with the comedians... and I didn't order anything because I was going to wait until we went in and sat down. We were sitting in there for about 45 minutes and no one took our order so I got up and went to get a menu . Still no one came over .The 3 servers walked around us , beside us, and in between but NEVER took our order! We were there for 2 1/2 hours!!!! No one ever asked if we wanted anything! Had it not been for the comedians we would have left after 1/2 hour of the lack of service. We have been to alot of shows around the country and have never had this happen. My suggestion would to be get a wait staff that is good for business not what you had last night ! We will not be coming back.Very disappointed ! More

Hi Usandthebeach, We are very sorry to hear about your negative experience. We will address this issue with our wait staff. Thank you for providing us with your feedback. Best, Penny F., Owner

So I went there today, and the view is great however, there's no staff at the door to assist with seating. I actually had to ask. So once I sat down it took forever for a server to notice. I ordered a pasta special and... waited 30 minutes for it. What came out was a pasta that had clearly been sitting for a while, was reheated and not even fresh. Even worse it looked like it was made and mixed with the sauce. The presentation of the meal was terrible I will submit a picture of it. For a 30 minute wait on pasta I expect some sort of a presentation and a fresh meal. Anyways the manager came by and gave it to me for half price because quite frankly I was afraid to order anything else for fear of receiving something that was just as bad or not fresh. How hard is it to mess up pasta? The place is in dire need of remodeling the carpet is dirty and the overall decor a drab, only the view saves it. More

What kind of person puts that much money into a business, but cares less about what would make their customers have a better dining experience. Customers walk into this huge building with no person to greet them and show them their dining options. They have... no sweet tea, though so many customers want it. They offer no drink specials on holidays that most bars partake in, Penny, the owner, cares only about the gamblers, and the gamblers alone. She is not open to new ideas that would increase her business and sales. She has the food there because you need to sell a certain about of food in order to sell the alcohol. Nor, does she want decent staff. If you are not sitting at the bar in your work unniform after you clock out, then you do not fit in. , NO CLASS!! More

What our customers had to say!

Had an awesome time. Great way to let your feet rest from all the walking. We even got to bring our pup & he loved it. Had a nice glass of wine and enjoyed the breeze from the water. I recommend this tour it’s a different way to see the monuments and memorials without walking a million miles.

-Alexis Suarez

We had an amazing time! We scheduled the Crab Boat for a ladies day out on the Potomac. The crew was very friendly and funny. The Captain played great music. The crabs were delicious! Even the side dishes were good. The weather was perfect. We would definitely cruise with them again.

The county's fire and rescue squad was dispatched to the river in reports of a kayak that went over the Maryland Falls at 6:20 p.m., a spokesperson for the department said.

One kayaker self-extricated on the Virginia side. They were treated and released by Fairfax Fire while another was removed by the Park Police helicopter in a stokes basket, and taken by helicopter to a hospital, officials said.

Their red kayak remains stuck in a hydraulic current, unable to be recovered.

The South Branch of the Potomac yields big fish in 2024 after some lean years

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — West Virginia is the birthplace of the famous Potomac River. While many know well the lower portions of the water way flowing through Maryland and into the nation’s Capital, the upper reaches in West Virginia’s highlands hold some of the watershed’s most spectacular scenery and at least in recent years some of the most amazing fishing.

Kellan Snyder of Moorefield, W.Va. left West Virginia and worked for seven years in Yellowstone National Park. Despite the natural beauty of the western United States, the mountains of West Virginia called him home with a plan to share his boyhood stomping grounds with the world.

“We started up in our first season 2021. When we first started, the goal was just to get people out and show people this area. I grew up here floating theses streams and fishing these rivers. I moved back here from Montana and wanted to bring things back I learned and was doing out there. Our ultimate goal is to get people out,” he said.

He started up Breezewood Adventures based in Moorefield. The business rents kayaks and canoes and provides a shuttle service to those wanting to float the river for fun. A year ago, Snyder added a float fishing guide service to the company’s list of products.

“A lot of what we do is canoe and kayak rentals. Sometimes they’ll float a stream for three days in a row anywhere from Big Bend up in Smoke Hole down through the Trough in Hampshire County, so we operate in three different counties,” he said.

The Trough may be the best known stretch of water on the river. It used to be the most popular for fishing, but the scars of the 1985 flood are still clearly visible. In the upper reaches the frame of an old car rested up against the bank with tree through through the windshield. The aptly named Trough narrows with steep banks and takes all of the water from the North Fork and South Forks and channels it down. During the 1985 flood, record amounts of flow pushed the banks straight up the steep canyon walls. It took out tall trees which had created a canopy over the water for years and provided shade and refuge for fish all along the banks.

“You can still see it for sure, but I do think some of those canopy trees are starting to grow back. But that water got so tight, you can look up the bank and see remnants 50 feet up the bank,” he explained.

Although the Trough may be the best known section of the South Branch, Snyder believed the upper stretch in the Smoke Hole Section may be the more spectacular spot. That’s because you can only float there in the early spring when the flows are right. During the summer and into the fall months there may not be enough water to make it possible.

“I think the Smoke Hole section rivals it, but it’s a more difficult float. You have to commit yourself to an entire full day or two or three days to float it. It’s also one of the few sections in West Virginia where you can catch trout and smallmouth bass. Because the Trough isn’t as far removed it’s a lot easier to access. It fishes well in the spring, but I think the scenery is the greatest attraction, especially in the summertime. You feel like you’re literally floating in a trough,” said Snyder.

As for the fishing, on this day we started with rain shower activity at the Old Field’s bridge. Rain didn’t spoil the day and didn’t stay around, but the overcast skies cast a gray gloom over the area and prompted fish actively feeding.

“It’s still got that greenish hue, but I’d like for it to be a little darker. The levels though I’m happy with. This time of year when it’s up like this, they get a little more aggressive pre-spawn, but they are a little more displaced so they’re harder to find,” said Snyder.

The last couple of years have been a bonanza for anglers on the South Branch. Even on our day multiple fish over 14 to 15 inches were caught along with a slew of smaller ones. DNR District Fisheries Biologist Brandon Keplinger credited that to three straight years of a lost spawn which significantly reduced the competition for food in the river.

“From 2016 to 2018, all three years, we had high flow events in May and June and generated three straight years of poor recruitment and young fish survival. During that time, when the number of smallmouth bass were lower, we saw fish grow much faster, weigh much more, and we saw the number of fish 11-inches and greater stay the same, but we saw fish 14-inches and greater become more numerous. I think this period has been born out of those slim times we saw from 2017 to 2019,” he explained.

Whatever has caused it, Snyder is excited. It’s giving him the opportunity to showcase some of the amazing scenery of West Virginia and to put some big fish in the boat at the same time.

“A lot of times we get people from out of town, not even from West Virginia. We obviously have a website, e-mail, social media. Just get hold of us and give us an idea of what you’re looking to do and just show up. We encourage people to book ahead of time just because we’ve gotten busy in the summer months. If you want the guided float trip, we ask that you get in touch with us at least two weeks ahead of time,” he said.
