Thailand International Boat Show 2023 Kicks Off

BY APB Staff on 12 Jan 2023

The Thailand International Boat Show 2023 (TIBS) is taking place this weekend (12-15 January 2023) at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina.

Over 6,000 visitors and more than 100 exhibitors are expected to attend this year’s event.

Event organisers Jand Group say they are welcoming wealthy jet-setters from overseas to one of the region’s first boat shows in three years, after the 2022 edition was cancelled at short notice. Yachts of all sizes, both power and sail, will be on display in the water from today, ranging from dinghies and day trippers up to superyachts.

The brand-new superyacht Song of Songs  is dubbed the headlining vessel at the show. Delivered in 2022, the yacht was built by the Chinese yard Heysea and is a new addition to the Burgess sales fleet. The boat, which can reach top speeds of 19 knots, can accommodate 12 people in six cabins and will be available for viewings throughout the show.

The daily schedule for the show was revealed earlier this week, and features a variety of entertainment alongside the yachts, including jazz performances, a b-boy street dance and F+B.

Phuket is the yachting playground of Southeast Asia and a key connector for the wider region. With four world-class marinas and a superyacht marina in planning, Phuket is where many owners from places such as Hong Kong and Singapore choose to keep their boats and fly in to use them, and is at the heart of the region’s burgeoning superyacht scene.

“Pre-pandemic, Thailand’s yachting industry was a multi-billion baht industry, welcoming yachts from cruisers to superyachts and their owners from around the world,” says David Hayes, CEO of organisers Jand Events. “Thailand has fully reopened and is welcoming visitors again. The Thailand International Boat Show aims to put Phuket and Thailand back in the limelight and on the world stage after three years of incubation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our goal is to bring the industry together and showcase the best brands and products from the marine and lifestyle sectors to a global audience while re-cementing Phuket and Thailand’s position as one of the top boating destinations in the world.”

Ditapong Thitadilok, Chairman of the Thailand Yachting Business Association, adds: “Complementing the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia is a new cruising destination gem, and Phuket is the centre of boating and marine leisure tourism in the region. Phuket continues to welcome boat owners, superyacht owners and charter guests from all around the world to enjoy the stunning cruising that Phuket and surrounds have to offer.”

The 2023 Thailand International Boat Show will comprise up to 50 boats in the water, an onshore pavilion with a luxury hub and marine products and services, as well as an onshore social programme that will include live music, a bustling dining scene on Royal Phuket Marina’s boardwalk as well as family activities on Children’s Day (14 January). One of the social highlights is a first-of-its-kind charity gala dinner that will take place at the InterContinental Phuket Resort on Saturday 14th January.

phuket yacht show 2023

The Thailand International Boat Show, to be held 12-15 January 2023, will spark Phuket as South Asia Pacific’s yachting leader. Set to let the world know that Phuket is back, it symbolises the resurgence of Phuket as a world-class marine leisure destination. The event will be held at Royal Phuket Marina and will highlight the unique combination of onshore lifestyle opportunities and on water boating opportunities that abound on and around Phuket. Co-founder of Asia Pacific Superyachts and based in Phuket, Gordon Fernandes shares news of the second international event and its importance to the industry.

With four world-class marinas and a superyacht marina in planning, Phuket is where owners from places such as Hong Kong and Singapore choose to keep their boats and fly in to use them. It’s where people from all corners of the globe fly in to charter and cruise; and it’s at the heart of the region’s burgeoning superyacht scene.

Working closely with the Thailand Yachting Business Association and Thailand Charter Week, JAND Events, organisers of the Thailand International Boat Show, aim to reignite interest in Phuket and Thailand’s marine scene post pandemic.

“Pre pandemic, Thailand’s yachting industry was a multi-billion baht industry, welcoming yachts from cruisers to superyachts and their owners from around the world,” shared David Hayes, CEO of organisers JAND Events. “Thailand has fully reopened and is welcoming visitors again. Our goal is to bring the industry together and showcase the best brands and products from the marine and lifestyle sectors to a global audience while re-cementing Phuket and Thailand’s position as one of the top boating destinations in the world.”

Invested in growing Thailand’s marine tourism and attracting high net worth individuals, prominent government stakeholders such as the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and are supporting the Thailand International Boat Show.

Ditapong Thitadilok, chairman of the Thailand Yachting Business Association, added: “Complementing the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia is a new cruising destination gem, and Phuket is the centre of boating and marine leisure tourism in the region. Phuket continues to welcome boat owners, superyacht owners and charter guests from all around the world to enjoy the stunning cruising that Phuket and surrounds has to offer.”

New innovations for the 2024 show include the inaugural  Thailand Yachting Conference  – a B2B platform for ideas exchange amongst local and international business people – and the  Robb Report Thailand Best Of The Best Yachting Awards Gala  – a celebration of the best yachts and brands.

Thailand International Boat Show

Phuket, The Hub Of The Next Global Superyacht Destination

phuket yacht show 2023

As we learn to live with Covid, Thailand, and more specifically Phuket, stands poised to be the hub of the next global superyacht destination, that being Southeast Asia. And what better way to showcase this wondrous destination than the Thailand International Boat Show (TIBS), to be staged at the award-winning and SHA Plus+ certified Royal Phuket Marina (RPM) from January 12-15, 2023. The show is organized by JAND Events and is the only boat show confirmed for the region in 2023; it will also be the only show to take in Southeast Asia since January of 2020.

David Hayes, the Chairman and CEO of the JAND Group, has dubbed the show “a luxury lifestyle event” and says RPM’s boardwalk will be teaming with restaurants and bars, and an exciting and extensive social programme. There also promises to be something for everyone at the Show, so it will be a good day out for the entire family. The JAND Group’s clients include such high-end brands as Givenchy, Hennessy, L’Oréal, Louis Vuitton, Kenzo and Moët and we hope to see some of them on display at this prestigious event.

The world’s most famous yachting brands will be showcased — both power and sail, as will a wide array of high-end yachting accessories. The 2,000sqm air-conditioned exhibition hall will be home to the latest in marine technology, gizmos and gadgets and a number of displays from high-end property developers.

JAND Events is also planning to have a superyacht pavilion, the first of its kind at any boat show in Thailand. Superyacht owners will have an exclusive villa and private pier to entertain guests, promote their superyachts and shuttle guests back and forth to their boats moored outside the marina.

Those craving a luxury lifestyle used to cruise the Mediterranean, the first global superyacht destination. While “the Med is not dead” — the area still remains beautiful — but space is at premium, and the shoreline is cluttered with chock-a-block resorts. The second global superyacht destination saw sailors, crew and their guests target the Caribbean. But, now, however, there’s a sense of “been there, done that” for both the Med, and the Caribbean.

Therein lies the lure of Southeast Asia – secluded anchorages, deserted islands and pristine beaches stretching from the Mergui Archipelago across Indonesia’s vast and beautiful island chain all the way to Papua New Guinea.

And before COVID hit, shorter travel times saw people from the West start to discover these out-of-the way and isolated anchorages and ports of call in Southeast Asia, and due to the legendary Thai hospitality and warmth they focused on Phuket as their base.

Those looking to have a superyacht holiday in the Land of Smiles include those who live in cold climates who want to get away when the climate in their own country is coldest. There are also a growing number of successful entrepreneurs who would like nothing better than to run an international business in comfort and style – from a yacht. Modern communications technology, as well as fast and inexpensive transport, makes this option available to an ever-growing number of entrepreneurs.

Part of the reason that people eye Phuket is because of their luxury lifestyle preferences, as onshore they can stay in architecturally brilliant homes nestled in remarkably beautiful natural surroundings. So infrastructure is important. And this is another area where Phuket wins high marks, offering respected international schools and hospitals as well as good international air connections and telecommunications. Throw into the mix distinguished chefs at international-standard restaurants, top-of-the-line golf courses, international sailing regattas, and the nightlife for which Thailand is renowned, and you’ve got a package that most people find quite attractive.

The Thai government has now taken steps to ensure that superyachts can stay in Thai waters for longer periods of time. Along with the 5-Gold Anchor Royal Phuket Marina, Phuket is also home to three other world-class marinas (Ao Po Grand Marina, Phuket Boat Lagoon, and Yacht Haven). And nearby Krabi province is also home to two top-notch marinas (Krabi Boat Lagoon and Port Takola Marina). All of these marinas offer either contractors on-site, or just a short call away, which can tend to almost any yacht repair or need.

Superyacht owners and their captains used to worry about having to repair their yacht in Southeast Asian waters if something were to happen to them. But there are enough good tradesmen now who can tend to and fix almost any mechanical, structural, or electric malfunction. And almost any type of food and beverage can be obtained from the companies here who cater exclusively to superyachts.

Phuket is an obvious choice to be the hub of the Southeast Asian superyacht world. It has been described as “a place that, although it may lie far from home, nevertheless feels like home.” The best of Thai hospitality will be on display at the Thailand International Boat Show. David Hayes and his team at JAND Events will make sure of it, and the global superyacht community will be watching.

There are three main active programs at the moment: The Licence to clean project, 7 Eco-catamarans that collect floating trash from the ocean around Phuket. A second project is the TeamSeagarden, which focuses on growing and replanting seagrass into specific bays around Phuket to improve the flow of CO² absorption and O² delivery in the ocean. The third one is the Shark Nursery program, which focuses on reintroducing sharks into the ocean to rebuild a stable predator-to-prey ratio and, therefore, rebuild a balanced ecosystem in which every species can thrive.
