"Excellent Staff, Dedicated Team!"

Excellent staff, have never seen a more dedicated team to making sure your vacation is perfect.

"VCY was the absolute best"

We have chartered several times in the BVIs, and our experience with VCY was the absolute best. The boat was in great condition and the service start to finish was fabulous. We will be back!

"Friendly, Professional & Accommodating!"

Our charter yacht was nearly new and well maintained. VCY was responsive whenever we had questions during our charter as well. Highly recommended!

"Best vacation we have ever taken!"

VCY was fantastic!! They answered every question, helped with all the travel details. Booked us taxis to and from the airport and even got us reservations for a special birthday dinner. We will absolutely be back!

"Exceptional Experience with 1st Class Crew!"

Highly recommend this organization… they were even able to accommodate a last minute itinerary change due to tropical storm “Beryl”!

"Best Week of My Life!"

Virgin motor yachts lined us up with a great Captain and assisted with all the details in preparation. I am already planning to come back in November.

"All Around 1st Class Customer Service"

Our 3rd year with Virgin Motor Yachts and we are starting to plan our trip for next year. An excellent vacation covering 7 islands over the 10 days.

"Search No Further VCY Is It!"

If I were to write everything good about our experience with VCY…I would need another week on their CAT on the BVI!

"Better Than We Could Have Ever Imagined"

From the planning stage to last day of our trip, we could not have asked for any better experience. Alexia and crew were wonderful to deal with.

"Another Amazing Week With VCY"

Amazing customer service. Highly recommend VCY ahead of the other two big companies on the island with very little customer service.

Gypsy Princess

Enjoy the BVI aboard Gypsy Princess , a 45 ft Lagoon. This popular charter yacht has 3 queen cabins with ensuites, both forward and aft cockpits, a fly bridge and a social salon. Recycling is a breeze for this certified green team, a clean team and dream team, with innovative fun ideas and locally sourced food sublimely served. Biff and Amy between them are instructors in the skills of: sailing, powerboating, waterskiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and paddle boarding.

Tropical Paradise Found!

Tortola, BVI 2020

Chartering a BVI yacht gives you the freedom to forget the stresses of modern life. Board your charter yacht at Nanny Cay Marina just a mini sail to a choice of several overnight anchorages. Lunch, sail, snorkel, happy hour, dinner – you will effortlessly glide into the quality of a tailormade liveaboard vacation . Circumnavigate Tortola with a crew to familiarize you with the secret hideaways and popular hotspots around the BVI. Anegada, North Sound – the millionaire’s playground – and the Baths for the scenic beauty. Jost Van Dyke is a must with White Bay being home to aqua waters and the Soggy Dollar Bar (because you must swim ashore) or the famous Foxy’s in Great Harbour.

Leave your watch and phone in your cabin for your swim ashore only to realize three days later you never even thought to pull them out again!

Bagheera is a big spacious beauty of a cat. 4 queen cabins make this a perfect fit for either a group of 8 adults or a family. The crew of 3 believe in having fun and in the motto “he who has the most toys” wins. It is a registered fishing vessel but also has a whole host of other equipment for a fun-filled charter.

Explore the Stunning Virgin Islands

Travelers diverge as they make their choices – there is no set itinerary. Depending on where you start and whether the tradewinds are slightly north of east or slightly south, you could start with the southern route heading to the outer islands of Norman, Peter, Cooper, or Salt. If you sail up the north shore you may choose Cane Garden Bay, Sandy Spit, or Camenoe. Still to explore are Trellis Bay, Virgin Gorda, and onto Anegada. With more than 60 small islands and bays, you may return again and again to visit old favorites and explore new hideaways.

Elysium at harbour - night

Elysium , a majestic Privilege 615 cat, has three cabins, each with an ensuite to define comfort afloat. Attention to detail and elegant woodwork are the hallmark of this yacht. Elysium caters for the fun-loving and adventurous, with vibrant crew, Matt and Tara, who have more than ten years’ experience at the helm. With a collective wealth of knowledge of watersports, food, and exploring, they look forward to welcoming you on board!

A Distinctive Destination – Yacht Charter BVI

Islands strung like a necklace curve over 35 miles from St. Thomas, USVI in the west into the British Virgin Islands ending at Anegada. The eastern tip of the British Virgin Islands join the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Nature’s bounty has gifted the Virgin Islands with islands to shelter the sailor from large ocean swells and provide numerous options for calm harbors, white sand beaches and reefs that can be easily spotted in the bright tropical sun.

Start at Trellis Bay, Beef Island Airport in the heart of the island chain and head north to Anegada, after a stop at North Sound, to find deserted swathes of empty beaches. Leave your signature footprints in the sand. Dine and dance barefoot under the stars, it is all part of your unique experience of the outer islands.

Paddle boarding, snorkeling, or scuba diving are all optional activities from your floating vacation in the Virgins. Perfect for sailing, never out of sight of land with your next stop just a short distance away, the Virgins define easy living.

This Lagoon 62 has 4 queen cabins, lounging areas and a fly bridge with a wine fridge. 3 crew enjoy regular rave reviews for both delectable cuisine and lots of energetic watersports activity. Silver service, sailing and the sea will help you de-stress, relax and recharge.

Additions to the Fleet

We have some great new vessels joining our fleet., what do they say about tmm yacht charters, "we chartered a 5 cabin fountaine pajoe for the 9 guests on this trip. since 1998, we have chartered with tmm around 8 or 9 times, and owned a boat in their charter service for 8 years. since our first bvi charter in 1990, we have used 4 different companies, and can say beyond a doubt tmm is far and away the best. their boats are perfectly maintained, spotlessly clean and better equipped then any competitor's. watermakers, generators and air conditioning......what more could you ask for how about friendly, professional staff from the sales office, to the marina office staff, to the maintenance gang to the cleaning staff.....and don't forget the taxi folks. just a great gang from start to finish. can't say enough about tmm, except that if anyone asks me for a recommendation of a bvi charter company, it is tmm hands down.".

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

A Necklace of Islands

The BVI forms a necklace of islands and cays strung along the Sir Francis Drake Channel between the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Sailing is by line-of-sight navigation on most occasions, with the option to enjoy the open ocean. This makes it a top-rated yacht charter destination for many beginners. They want the sailing experience, great beaches, snorkeling with marine life, kiteboarding, and scuba diving.

The British Virgin Islands Sailboat Charters can, thus, be a great choice to explore the unparalleled secret of nature. Our BVI Sailing Itineraries will take you to islands rich with indigenous fauna, such as red-legged tortoises and giant iguanas on Anegada .

British Virgin Islands Sailboat Charters | Variety of Options

There are many options for sailboat chartering in the Virgin Islands. Your British Virgin Islands Sailboat Charter could be on an award-winning crewed sailing catamaran . Sailing catamarans are the most popular type of BVI yacht charter. Also, you might choose a crewed power catamaran cruising at a leisurely pace on a more direct course to your next anchorage. If you are a sailor, you might prefer a crewed sailboat.

Besides sailing catamarans, power catamarans, and sailboats, there are also motor yachts ranging in length from 70ft to 150 ft+ staffed with two to 15+ crew members. The choice is yours to make. Undoubtedly, bareboat charters allow you to be in command if you wish to have that responsibility.

You can cruise leisurely among the islands or at a quicker pace by visiting multiple anchorages every day. Here again, the choice is yours, depending on the conditions. Some charterers prefer to relax in their favorite anchorage for a few nights before sailing the trade winds, island hopping to the next beautiful spot.

While on your charter, you may dine ashore or onboard. Generally, the cuisine on the crewed charters is delicious compared to dining ashore. However, it is always a pleasure to sample the local cuisine ashore. I’m sure by now you can see why the British Virgin Islands Sailboat Charters are so popular.

Sail Your Dreams

The beautiful sea is calling to you everywhere you go in the BVI. It is an ocean of exciting adventures to experience and your constant traveling companion. Descend to the ocean depths to explore a century-old shipwreck or snorkel the abundant reefs. Enjoy deep-sea fishing , or soak in the warm, radiant sun and vast skies. The British Virgin Islands have a slice of paradise for everyone. Sailing vacations are ideal in the BVI.

British Virgin Islands Sailboat Charters

In addition to palm-fringed white sand beaches and turquoise waters, you will find friendly, warmhearted people throughout these sixty idyllic islands. The best way to experience the heart of the British Virgin Islands is by yacht, either on a bareboat or crewed yacht charter. Be among the many who say their BVI sailing vacation was a “Trip of the lifetime.”

Your British Virgin Islands yacht charters can often be combined with a U.S. Virgin Islands charter.

Guide to the British Virgin Islands

A delightfully deserted fantasyland, ideal for sailing retreats

Laced like emerald drops in the glittering waters of the Caribbean , the British Virgin Islands are peppered with pristine beaches, hidden coves and picturesque anchorages. Humbling and magical these volcanic islands are rugged in character and strikingly beautiful. Those looking for calm, tranquil sailing, deserted bays and excellent dive spots needn’t look any further than the British Virgin Islands.

Often referred to as simply the BVIs, these islands offer some of the most opulent and compelling yacht charter destinations in the world. Centred in one of the most spectacular cruising areas in the Caribbean Sea, the BVIs are home to a plethora of lush isles and islets, ideal for island hopping with each island offering its own unique delights.

Roughly split into two island chains the British Virgin Islands stretch for more than 30 miles and are separated by the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Located on the northern side, the main island of this glorious archipelago is Tortola which is neighboured by the Beef Island, Guana Island, The Camanoes and The Dogs. On the south side, Norman and Peter Islands, Dead Chest, Salt, Cooper and Ginger islands, and Virgin Gorda can be found. To the north east of the main group of islands are Jost Van Dyke and the Tobago islands, whilst Anegada lies 14 miles north of Virgin Gorda. Most of the islands are small and uninhabited with some being privately owned, the most notable of which being Richard Branson’s Necker Island - the secluded nature of this gorgeous destination is the ultimate island escape.

Largely unspoiled by development and brushed by gentle trade winds, the British Virgin Islands make for a great sailing yacht destination without being too rough for motor yachts . Abound with excellent yacht facilities it comes as no surprise to know that this charter destination has become one of the most popular in the world.

Tortola The main island in the British Virgin Islands, Tortola is an eclectic mix of thick alluring jungle, towering mountain peaks and an assortment of vibrant towns. Deemed as the charter capital of the Caribbean, Tortola boasts an abundance of things to do with the hustle and bustle of the island capital of Road Town being an undoubted highlight. Sports enthusiasts will relish the opportunities to snorkel, fish, dive and hike before taking part in a game of tennis or cricket whilst beach lovers will admire the stretches of secluded sands which are lapped by crystalline azure waters.

Virgin Gorda Brimmed with beauty and loved by all, Virgin Gorda has somehow maintained her innocence despite her increasing popularity. A yacht charter is the ultimate way to explore, with a relishing cool breeze making for calm and tranquil sailing. The Baths are unmissable, boasting obscure rock formations of mysterious shapes, which invite hikers to traverse the immense boulders and alluring grottoes.

Jost Van Dyke Small in size but with a big personality, Jost Van Dyke radiates an overwhelming sense of welcome, making it difficult for visitors to leave this captivating destination. Reputed as the ‘party island’ of the BVI, Jost Van Dyke is rich with mountainous scenery and lush vegetation making it a secluded getaway with a vibrant twist. Laced with restaurants and bars aplenty, Jost Van Dyke is one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean and for good reason.

Rendezvous diving

yachts of british virgin islands

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

Crew information.

Crew Main Image

Captain: Tristan Rogotzki

Tristan: Born to be a sailor, Tristan could say he had his sea legs before he even knew he had legs. His passion for freedom and love for the ocean and nature has always been a quintessential part of his personality. Growing up in South Africa, Tristan became an avid sailboat racer, placing at a national level. This active lifestyle lead him to further explore the travel opportunities that can be provided stepping on board a charter vessel. His sailing career has brought him from Cape Agulhas, the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, and now to the Caribbean. Tristan enjoys spending as much time on the water as he does in the water, snorkeling and diving, and even over the water, playing with the videos he captures with his drone. Crossfit and hiking are other ways he loves to stay physically active and he always is up for a mental challenge in a game of chess. Ceilidh: A natural caretaker, Ceilidh captures a calming essence with her patient personality balanced with an enthusiasm for life and activity. Beyond her passions for the sea and sailing, she glows with excitement when sharing her appreciation for wine, food, coffee, art, and photography. Growing up with Swiss and South African citizenship, it’s no wonder how Ceilidh became fascinated with the beautiful world and culture she finds in these passions. From providing exquisite wine tasting on a farm in South Africa, to becoming a Qualified Barista and Coffee Sensory Experience Expert in Honduras, she will surely take your taste-buds on their own adventure! Ceilidh's caring demeanor extends to the younger ones as well. Previously a live-in Au Pair, she is intimately familiar with the activity levels of children and always has playful way to keep them entertained, engaged, and well nourished. Tristan and Ceilidh: Tristan and Ceilidh met as most sailors do, at the local pub. The difference however, was that it was not love at first sight, but rather a return to an ancient friendship. A couple months into dating they decided to explore their shared passion for the ocean. They set out sailing across the world, starting in the frosty waters of Cape Town to beautiful Croatia. Pulled to a warmer climate in the Caribbean, Tristan and Ceilidh set off to sail in the waters of the British Virgin Islands, St Marteen, Belize and Honduras throughout 4 months. Landing in the Bahamas, they are ecstatic to bring their ambition for exploring and appreciating the natural world to the eyes and hearts of their guests. Dominic: Dominic fell in love with the sea and all it has to offer through diving. He has worked as an entertainer in Greece, mastering interpersonal skills, and spent a year multitasking as a waiter and bartender in South Africa. All of this culminating into a mix of good conversation and great drinks. Beyond the professional realm, He is passionate about diving, sea life, diverse cuisine, travel and sports.

  • wpcf_crew: a:16:{s:4:"info";s:3111:"Tristan:

Born to be a sailor, Tristan could say he had his sea legs before he even knew he had legs.

Ceilidh:

A natural caretaker, Ceilidh captures a calming essence with her patient personality balanced with an enthusiasm for life and activity.

Tristan and Ceilidh:

Tristan and Ceilidh met as most sailors do, at the local pub.

Dominic:

Dominic fell in love with the sea and all it has to offer through diving. He has worked as an entertainer in Greece, mastering interpersonal skills, and spent a year multitasking as a waiter and bartender in South Africa. his sea legs before he even knew he had legs.

Ceilidh:

A natural caretaker, Ceilidh captures a calming essence with her patient personality balanced with an enthusiasm for life and activity.

Tristan and Ceilidh:

Tristan and Ceilidh met as most sailors do, at the local pub.

Dominic:

Dominic fell in love with the sea and all it has to offer through diving. He has worked as an entertainer in Greece, mastering interpersonal skills, and spent a year multitasking as a waiter and bartender in South Africa. All of this culminating into a mix of good conversation and great drinks. Dom was incredibly attuned to our needs, suggesting drinks and always having an awareness and anticipation of our needs. Growing up on the beach he took to the water as a child and never looked back. At the age of 10, he began racing in the Junior Sailing Association all over the Long Island Sound. His passion growing up was competitive sailing and he has continued to race season after season for the last 20 years. A love for sailing has been in his blood since he was a young child. He spent summers sailing to and from Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and the British Virgin Islands. In his spare time, he also enjoys surfing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, beach volleyball, and snowboarding.

Ron became a Sailing instructor in his late teens and worked as a skipper for regattas including the Atlantic Nationals. He also has experience managing race committees, acting as a safety chase boat, as well as setting up racecourses. When he isn’t racing he can be found chartering in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, diving and participating in just about any watersport. He has worked for multiple high-end charter companies globally over the years and loves showing his guests what makes sailing his passion for so many years. Guests looking to learn more about sailing or receive their ASA certification will enjoy Ron’s fun-loving instruction on board!

Katy Nickel - Third Crew/Stewardess - USCG Masters 100T, STCW, Padi Divemaster

Katy is an avid ocean lover and adventure enthusiast; she has spent years teaching marine science and sustainability, traveling throughout North and Central America, and the Caribbean, and enjoying fishing and SCUBA diving. Her history on boats and in the service industry provides experience and insight to ensure you are well taken care of, no matter what the need. Katy spent 4 years spearheading an environmental non-profit and zero-waste event planning business in North Carolina before moving to the Caribbean to grow her passions, as well as share her talents and skills with the boating world. She has been mastering her logistical coordination to ensure the best-suited itinerary and activity list for each group’s preferences. Before moving over to Third Crew, Katy was the chef on another vessel with Ron, therefore you will see her love for helping in the galley, and if she is not there or helping Ron with the sails, you will find her making a batch of her delicious custom cocktails.

We don’t do great on boats and we didn’t know what to expect being our first time spending days on a boat but it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Delana Mae was absolutely beautiful. Ron and Katy made our experience very special. They are both such beautiful, kind, and sweet people. They made us feel very comfortable, taken care of, and were very attentive. They make the perfect team. We learned a lot of interesting facts about the history of the islands, sailing, different fishes, and what it’s like to live on a boat. Katy’s meals were all very delicious with beautiful presentation. They were both very nice when asked for anything even to take pictures of our group. They went above and beyond to make our experience the best possible and they achieved that. They became part of our group and we had a great time getting to know them and about their experiences. Selecting the Perfect Yacht for Your British Virgin Islands Vacation

Choosing the right yacht for your trip can make a world of difference, and there are five key factors you’ll need to consider to ensure you’re selecting the perfect vessel for your British Virgin Islands vacation.

  • First, consider the size of the yacht. If you’re traveling with a large group, you’ll need a larger yacht to accommodate everyone comfortably.
  • Secondly, consider the amenities you want. Some yachts come with luxury features like hot tubs, premium dining facilities and water toys.
  • Thirdly, think about the itinerary. BVI charters offer a variety of routes, and the yacht you choose should be capable of handling your planned journey.
  • Fourthly, consider the level of service you desire. Canvas Yacht Charters offers fully crewed yachts, where all your needs are taken care of.
  • Lastly, consider your budget. Yacht rentals vary in price, so make sure to select a yacht that fits within your financial plan. By considering these five factors, you’ll be able to select the perfect yacht for your British Virgin Islands yacht vacation.

Best Times to Sail in the British Virgin Islands

You’re probably wondering when’s the best time to set sail in the British Virgin Islands, and it’s crucial to know that the ideal sailing conditions often occur between December and April. During these months, you’ll experience steady trade winds, calm seas, and warm temperatures ranging from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, don’t dismiss the rest of the year. May to November can also offer good sailing, with slightly higher temperatures and a bit more rain. It’s less crowded, so you’ll enjoy more privacy and potentially better deals on yacht charters.

But be wary of the Atlantic hurricane season , running from June to November. Although hurricanes aren’t a daily occurrence, they can disrupt plans. So, if you’re risk-averse, stick to the December-April window.

Remember, it’s not just about the weather. Consider what you want from your trip. If you’re seeking vibrant nightlife and events, time your visit with the annual BVI Spring Regatta in March or the Full Moon parties at Bomba’s Shack.

Essential Travel Tips for the British Virgin Islands

Armed with knowledge about the best times to visit, let’s now delve into some crucial travel tips for the British Virgin Islands, ensuring you’re well prepared for your yacht charter adventure.

  • Consider your budget. The British Virgin Islands aren’t exactly cheap. Plan accordingly to ensure you can enjoy all the offerings without straining your wallet.
  • Pack smart! Lightweight clothing is a must due to the tropical climate. Don’t forget your swimwear, sunblock, and a hat. Importantly, pack a waterproof camera to capture the sublime underwater life.
  • Keep in mind that the official currency is the U.S. dollar. Most places accept credit cards, but it’s wise to have some cash on hand.

Respect local customs and traditions. Islanders appreciate it when visitors take the time to understand their way of life.

Finally, remember that you’re in the tropics, so stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun.

Now, you’re a step closer to a smooth sailing experience in the British Virgin Islands. Take these tips to heart, and you’ll be on your way to an unforgettable yachting adventure.

Exploring the Top Destinations in the British Virgin Islands

With your bags packed and tips in hand, it’s time for you to set sail and explore the top destinations in the British Virgin Islands, where pristine beaches and vibrant marine life await. Your first stop should be Tortola, the largest island. Here, you’ll find Road Town, a harbor city brimming with Caribbean culture. Don’t forget to visit the Callwood Rum Distillery to get a taste of local flavors.

Next, head over to Virgin Gorda, renowned for The Baths, a geological wonder consisting of massive granite boulders. Here, you can swim in the unique tidal pools or explore the hidden caves. The island is also home to Gorda Peak National Park, a tropical forest with panoramic views.

Your adventure doesn’t stop there. Sail over to Anegada, the only coral island in the island group. It’s a paradise for snorkelers and divers with its vibrant coral reefs. Also, don’t miss the famous Flamingo Pond.

A Guide to Local Customs and Etiquette

Before you immerse yourself in the rich Caribbean culture of the British Virgin Islands, it’s crucial that you become familiar with some of the local customs and etiquette to ensure you’re respectful of the islanders’ traditions and way of life.

Firstly, greetings are important here. It’s customary to say ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’, or ‘good night’ before starting a conversation. Don’t forget to maintain a friendly demeanor and eye contact. Island time is a real thing in the BVI – locals tend to operate at a relaxed pace, so patience is key.

Dressing appropriately is another aspect to be mindful of. While beachwear is acceptable on the sand, it’s seen as disrespectful to wear skimpy outfits in public places or religious sites.

Food and drink are at the heart of BVI culture. If invited to a local’s home, it’s polite to bring a gift. When dining out, tipping is customary, usually around 15% of the bill.

Lastly, the BVI is environmentally conscious, so ensure you respect their commitment to preserve their beautiful islands. Follow these customs and you’ll not only have an enjoyable visit but also earn the respect of the friendly islanders.

Must-Try Local Cuisine in the British Virgin Islands

You can’t visit the British Virgin Islands without indulging in the local cuisine, and there’s a wealth of dishes you’ll want to try. Known for its rich, hearty flavors, BVI cuisine reflects its culturally diverse history with a unique blend of African, European, and Indian influences.

Begin your gastronomic journey with a hearty bowl of fish and fungi, a local staple. The ‘fungi’ is a cornmeal dish somewhat like American grits, served with a delectable fish stew. For something lighter, try the conch fritters. These delicious deep-fried snacks are made from conch, a type of shellfish renowned for its tender texture and sweet taste.

Of course, you can’t leave without tasting the national dish, Anegada lobster. Freshly caught and grilled to perfection, its succulent meat is a must-try for seafood lovers. Finally, wash it all down with a glass of the famous Painkiller cocktail. This tropical mix of rum, coconut cream, orange and pineapple juice, topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg, is the perfect way to end a meal.

So, there you have it – a comprehensive guide to your dream yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands. From selecting your perfect yacht to savoring local cuisine and respecting island customs, you’re now prepared for an unforgettable voyage. Remember, safety first and fully embrace the local culture. Your adventure is waiting. Now, it’s time to turn this dream into reality. Happy sailing!

British Virgin Islands Charter Destinations

Yacht charter destination british virgin islands experience.

For anyone who enjoys fishing, diving, and soaking up the sun on some of the nicest beaches in the world, then the British Virgin Islands ( BVI ) is a dreamy place to charter a luxury yacht with 26 North. The largest island is Tortola, renowned for its shockingly white beaches, lush green foliage, and laid-back vibe. It also happens to be home to some of the finest rum distilleries on the planet. Smuggler’s Cove offers terrific snorkeling and beaches, with sea turtles swimming just offshore.

For more than two centuries, Norman Island – the largest uninhabited island in BVI – has been the subject of (quite believable) buried treasure rumors. There are dozens of prime hiding spots, like the famous cave that extends 24 meters under the island.

The Virgin Gorda Baths are another famous BVI landmark. This distinctive-looking bay is known for its massive granite boulders, sea pools and grottoes that are perfect for snorkeling.

The capital of the British Virgin Islands, Road Town, is home to historic forts and sugar mills, cool shops and award-winning dining. While you’re there, be sure to check out Government House, J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens and Dolphin Discovery Tortola.

If diving in a shipwreck interests you, check out the RMS Rhone at Rhone National Marine Park – one of the best dive sites in the Caribbean – or head to Sandy Cay on Little Jost Van Dyke for some exceptional snorkeling and kayaking.

Whether you want to relax on secluded beaches, explore the jungle or experience local culture, a yacht charter in BVI with 26 North is the perfect way to do it. With a crew of experienced professionals on board, you can sit back and relax while enjoying world-class comfort and amenities at every step of the journey.

There’s a reason that icons like Richard Branson, Larry Page (Google), and Morgan Freeman own homes in BVI – it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. The cuisine – especially the seafood, like lobster, fish chowder, snapper, and conch stew – is out-of-this-world excellent!

Itineraries, explore caribbean.

This is just a sample itinerary, and there are many other beautiful locations to visit in the Caribbean, such as the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Dominican Republic.

Explore The British Virgin Islands (BVI)

This island chain, made up of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and 50 smaller islands and cays, are perfectly tailored for a luxury vacation – but particularly one on a super high-end motor yacht.

The First-Timer's Guide To Sailing On A Crewed Yacht Charter In The British Virgin Islands

Here are nine things to know before you embark on your inaugural voyage with the moorings..

An evening view of a ship in the Moorings fleet, located in the British Virgin Islands.

Spread across 56 square miles of cerulean Caribbean seas, the British Virgin Islands comprises more than 60 islands and cays. And if you want to discover their secret coves and stunning natural beauty, there's no better way than on a leisurely cruise from one anchorage to another on a crewed charter. With a professional captain, chef, and steward on board, all you have to do is relax and let the islands come to you.

I've been fortunate enough to explore the BVI this way four times, most recently with The Moorings , an outfitter founded in Tortola 54 years ago, which operates a fleet of more than 300 vessels there. If you're new to private chartered yachting, here are my best tips for making the most of your cruise.

Bring Soft Luggage

You know that new piece of checked luggage you bought during the pandemic for when you finally started to travel again? The one that can hold enough stuff for two weeks away? Leave it at home. In comparison to a hotel room, your cabin will be decidedly compact, and it's unlikely there'll be space to store something so bulky.

Instead, bring a soft-side duffel bag or wheelie that can be folded flat once you've unpacked, then tucked out of sight in a cupboard or under your bed.

Pack Light

For a 7-night cruise on a regular cruise ship, you'll need resort wear and swim wear for daytime, and dressier pieces for dinner. But on a Caribbean yacht charter, you'll be living in swimwear, supplemented by a pair shorts, a coverup, and maybe—just maybe—a maxi dress or other smart casual outfit if you choose to have dinner onshore.

On my recent Moorings sailing I wore five swimsuits (I like to have choices!) and not much else. My best advice: Pack more swimwear (so you always have a dry suit) and fewer "real" clothes than you think you'll need.

Get a Pedicure

If you've never been on a yacht or catamaran before you probably don't know that shoes usually aren't allowed onboard (they can damage the finish on the deck). But this is one of the first things the crew will tell you. Fling your flip-flops into the boat's shoe basket, and don't give them another thought until it's time to go ashore.

But please, consider your fellow sailors and make sure your bare feet are presentable. Cracked heels and callouses are not a good look!

Take Cruise Control

A beach excursion during a British Virgin Islands sailing with The Moorings.

One of the best things about a crewed charter is that, within reason, you set the itinerary. On previous Moorings sailings, breakfast was followed by a briefing with the captain, who'd spread his map on the table to show you where you are, suggest places you could go that day, and what you could do when you get there.

Whether you want to snorkel (the waters around The Indians, off Norman Island, are stellar); to shop at an island boutique (there are good ones on Cooper Island and at Saba Rock); or simply to sip rum punch all day as you watch sandy islets float by, your captain will make it happen.

There Will Be Painkillers

The Caribbean is the birthplace of several cocktails, including Puerto Rico's piña colada and the Cayman Islands' mudslide. In the BVI, the local libation is the Painkiller, a potent combination of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple and orange juices, topped with a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg.

It was invented at The Soggy Dollar , a beach bar on Jost Van Dyke, so you'll have to try the original there. But Painkillers and variations thereof are served at every bar in the BVI. And since you're not doing the driving, it'd be rude to refuse them, no?

Go with the Flow

Whenever you sail, particularly on a small vessel, you're at the mercy of the weather. Choppy seas can make anchoring off some islands difficult. Or you may arrive at a popular spot late in the day and find there are no mooring balls available. The beach bar you had your heart set on visiting might be unexpectedly closed.

My point: Things don't always go according to plan, so you'll need to be flexible.

It Could Get Rough

Of course, The Moorings and other boat charter companies pull their boats out of service if there's a hurricane on the horizon. But sudden "pop-up" storms can lead to less-than-ideal sailing conditions. So, if you're prone to motion sickness, arrive prepared with the appropriate meds or a pair of anti-sea sickness wristbands.

Ninety percent of the time it'll be smooth sailing; don't leave the remaining 10 percent to chance.

Re-Entry Can Be Rough, Too

Obviously, returning to reality after several languorous days at sea will be a shock to your system. But the actual process of leaving the boat and getting back to the airport can be a more complex and longer process than you'd imagine.

On my cruise, getting to the airport in St. Thomas required a 20-minute boat ride to BVI Customs at West End (where we waited 40 minutes to be cleared); then a 15-minute boat ride to Cruz Bay, St. John to clear U.S. Customs; followed by a 10-minute sail to Red Hook in St. Thomas, from where we drove 30 minutes to STT. Phew!

Allow yourself ample time to get back to your departure airport. The good news: American Airlines has announced non-stop flights from Miami into Tortola, BVI, beginning in June.

You’ll Want to Do it Again

A group of friends sails on a crewed yacht charter with The Moorings, in the British Virgin Islands.

Perhaps next time you'll bring different friends or family members with you (The Moorings' boats sleep between 6 and 10 people). Maybe next time you'll summon the courage to jump off the top deck of the infamous floating bar, the Willy T . On a return trip, you could even sail all the way out to Anegada, the furthest flung island in the archipelago, to sample its famously tasty lobster.

There are so many reasons to want to repeat an idyllic week in Paradise—and any one of them will do!

10 Things To Do In The Virgin Gorda: Complete Guide To The Most Scenic Of The British Virgin Islands

B asking in the Caribbean Sea, Virgin Gorda is the third-largest of the British Virgin Islands. Although it covers an area of only eight square miles, vacationers will stay busy and be intrigued by every inch, from Virgin Island's tourist attractions to its unique geography.

Virgin Gorda is Spanish for 'Fat Virgin' and was allegedly named by Christopher Columbus due to its appearance of a woman lying on her side from the horizon. Beachgoers can assess Columbus' theory as they approach the island by ferry. Most tourists will dock in the main commercial area, Spanish Town, and head directly to the most famous attraction in Virgin Gorda: The Baths. A one-of-a-kind beach, The Baths attract tourists from across the Virgin Islands for its natural pools and massive granite boulders.

Luckily, Virgin Gorda is so much more than The Baths, and travelers will have the rest of the island practically to themselves, left to explore abandoned mines, the mountain dominating the center, and stunning lookout points. Visitors can make Virgin Gorda one of the most affordable Virgin Island vacations , thanks to its obscurity.

Dive into turquoise waters and this complete guide on what to do, the food to eat, and where to stay in Virgin Gorda.

Soak In Natural Pools At The Baths

All beachgoers need to see The Baths in the British Virgin Islands . Not only the most spectacular sight in Virgin Gorda, but The Baths are also one of the major tourist destinations in the Virgin Islands. Many cruise ships and tourists flock to marvel at the pristine beaches and unique geological formations.

Just south of Spanish Town at the southern tip of the island, The Baths formed by magma cooling over the millennia and rising into thousands of massive granite boulders. These boulders line the soft white sands, some towering over 40 feet. The granite piles create sheltered tidal pools, scenic grottoes, and spellbinding arches.

Visit The Baths for an exhilarating day of swimming, unwinding on the beach, rock climbing, or the best Instagram shots. Vacationers start at the entrance and take the 15-minute path toward the lovely Devil's Bay beach .

From there, adventurists should continue on the route to hop between rocks and explore the tunnel system referred to as The Caves .

  • The Baths Hours: Daily, 9 AM - 4 PM
  • Cost Of Admission: $3 per person

Outdoor enthusiasts ready for a change of pace after endless beach days should check out Gorda Peak National Park . Dominating the center of Virgin Gorda, the protected nature reserve spans over 250 acres and reaches a peak of 1,370 feet.

Two trails wind through the forest to the top of Gorda Peak. Both routes are well-maintained and shaded by dense trees. While hikers won't catch any scenic views until arriving at the peak, there are several rare species of lizards and geckoes to glimpse along the way.

Travelers will find both trailheads along N Sound Road , the meandering highway that cuts through the national park. When driving north, the first trailhead offers a longer yet gradual climb, while the second route is more challenging. Since there is no parking lot, tourists going by rental car should park along the road.

Scenic views, dense flora and fauna, and the chance for a jog or stroll await vacationers at the Gorda Peak National Park.

  • Total Hiking Time: 1 - 2 Hours
  • Difficulty: Easy - Moderate

Discover Scuba Diving Adventures At The Dog Islands

The Dogs are a cluster of five islands just off the northwest coast of Virgin Gorda. A haven for birds and marine animals, The Dogs are one of many unique places for fauna and flora in the Virgin Islands .

Sailors named these islands after the barking sounds that emerged from their shores, which turned out to be Caribbean monk seals, not canine. Sadly, this rare species of seal was later hunted to extinction.

Adventurists will love The Dogs for some of the best diving and snorkeling in Virgin Gorda. Turquoise waters, mesmerizing corals, and abundant wildlife await divers in this clutch of tiny islands.

Today, the ruins and surrounding area comprise a national park. Although just a quick stop, Copper Mine is a quiet and unique attraction in Virgin Gorda. The rocky cliff offers a scenic viewpoint over the ocean and shoreline, while history buffs can glimpse the island's storied past.
