For many a trip to Marbella is incomplete without a visit to Puerto Banus , the most well known of all the ports on the Costa del Sol it offers mooring for 915 boats of various sizes. It's a voyeur's paradise whether you like to admire sports cars and fancy yachts, or just enjoy watching the world go by.

But don't be fooled into thinking that Puerto Banus is the only marina in Marbella!

Just a short distance away, Marbella's Puerto La Bajadilla is a more traditional working fishing port where, since 1955, fishermen have been landing their catches to be sold in the local markets. This port has been hitting the headlines in recent years as it is the subject of a proposed renovation project by the Qatari Royal Family, which planned to create a much larger marina on the site complete with luxury hotels and new restaurants. They also envisaged capacity for up to 1,220 berths, disembarkation points for cruise ships and a commercial area with the aim of enhancing the jet set reputation of Marbella. Cabopino marina 

To the east of Marbella, one of the locals' favourite marinas is hidden beyond sandy dunes and attractive apartment complexes. The quiet Cabopino marina has a small but superb selection of restaurants, coffee shops and bars clustered around the yachts and motor cruisers berthed there. Popular for lunch and dinner, the relaxed ambience attracts those who have enjoyed a lazy day on the sandy Cabopino beach as well as the golfers who've faced the challenge of the nearby course. Ferry boat to Puerto Banús Marina

A catamaran ferry runs between Puerto Deportivo de Marbella and Puerto Banús , an adult return is 15 euros, it's 8.50 euros for children. Single tickets cost 8.50 and 5 euros respectively. The ferries run from 10:30 until 19:00.

Fire tears through marina in Medulin, Croatia and destroys 22 boats

A fire has torn through a marina in Medulin, northwestern Croatia and destroyed approximately 22 boats. No yachts were in the area at the time according to BOATPro , with all the affected vessels measuring below 24 metres.

According to a statement by the Istrian Police Directorate, authorities were alerted to the scene at 3.54am today (15 May). Four vehicles and 15 crew arrived to find almost all the boats on the pontoon already consumed by flames.

Local reports claim that several owners jumped into the sea to escape as firefighters attempted to separate the boats that were still unaffected. The blaze was localised by 7.00am and is now extinguished.

"The Port Authority of Pula reacted immediately, helping to put out the fire and save what could be saved," read an official statement from the Municipality of Medulin. "Individuals who jumped into the sea with almost 'insane' courage that can only be seen in the most difficult situations, untied ships, and pushed the flares with their own vessels proved to be particularly worthy."

It continued: "We would like to thank our firefighters, the employees of the Port Authority of Pula, the employees of Buža, the members of DVD Medulin and all our locals who provided help in this difficult situation."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. No injuries have been reported.

Saylorville boat owners say Army Corps now investigating marina prices

S aylorville Lake is flooded with water, but the Saylorville Marina parking lot is still flooded with houseboats. And that’s got nothing to do with recent rain

“It’s two months into the season and half the people don’t have their boats in!” says houseboat owner, Bob Coffey.

He’s one of the lucky ones: his boat is actually in the water.

Others, like Ryan Doty, can only stand and watch from the parking lot.

“I’m on the wait list,” he says. “That’s what they tell me. Could be a couple weeks.”

Despite paying more than ever for their slips and buoys in the water, there are still dozens of houseboat owners waiting for Saylorville Marina staff to move them out of the parking lot and into the water for the season.

It’s just the latest in a long list of complaints made by boat owners about the marina’s owner, Suntex Marinas of Texas.

Citing unreasonably-high prices and bad service, the boat owners finally got an audience with the Army Corps of Engineers Wednesday night.

Suntex leases the land for the marina from the Army Corps and their contract requires them to keep prices comparable to other marinas in the region.

The owners — who this year assembled a Facebook group to fight Suntex — says it made it clear to the Army Corps that Suntex has not been doing that.

“The Army Corps had a big eye opening last night when we gave them the actual numbers,” said Matt Drewis, one of the group’s leaders. “(District Commander Jesse) Curry asked us to give him a little bit of time to at least go through these numbers and try to figure things out.”

The “numbers” are marina prices gathered from lakes around the Midwest — prices the group says are far lower than those Suntex (which runs the only marinas on Saylorville and Red Rock lakes) charges in Iowa.

Boat owners say while the Army Corps had initially seemed ready to accept Suntex’s claims that their prices were competitive, the Corps now seems motivated to investigate further.

“Suntex had supplied the Army Corps with some very skewed numbers,” Drewis said. “Some were numbers that they had manipulated and weren’t very true. They now have the real numbers.”

“Even if ultimately the Army Corps of Engineers says “it is what it is,’” said Doty, “ultimately maybe it’s a wake-up call that they should start treating us the way that we pay to be treated.”

The boat owners were joined at the meeting last night by representatives from the offices of Zach Nunn, Marianette Miller-Meeks, and Charles Grassley.

Large crocodile removed from North Queensland marina after lunging at man on houseboat

Wildlife authorities have captured and removed a 4-metre crocodile that lunged at a man on a houseboat in North Queensland.

Dean Grieve reported the terrifying encounter at the Cardwell marina to the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation last month.

He said the crocodile launched itself out of the water and onto his boat, coming "only inches away" from where he had been standing.

It was suspected the same animal also took his pet dog weeks before.

Wildlife officer Ella Meeve said the large crocodile was caught in a floating trap secured to a pontoon and removed from the area on Monday.

"He put up a fair fight," Ms Meeve said.

"We had received reports indicating he had been there for quite a while and would come and go with the tides.

"It is very concerning to us when we receive reports from members of the public where they've had encounters like that with crocodiles, and that's why the department responded as quickly as what we did."

Second crocodile caught

A smaller 3-metre crocodile was also caught and removed from the marina.

"When trapping crocodiles, we do run the risk of unfortunately removing non-target animals," Ms Meeve said.

"It's something that we do try our best to avoid.

"We were aware of that smaller animal that was residing in the marina as well and unfortunately it was just bycatch."

She said both reptiles would now be sent to a crocodile farm or wildlife park.

"We will probably reach out to the traditional owners, being such a large iconic animal, and let them know and see if they wish to keep the animal on country or if they wish to name it," Ms Meeve said.

"Even though we've removed two from the marina, there's nothing to stop another crocodile from moving in."

A warning to fishers

Ms Meeve said crocodiles were especially attracted to the marina because of crab pots and fish carcasses left behind by fishers.

"Crocodiles will learn that they can get a free feed from the marina and that seems to be the case here," she said.

Ms Meeve warned people in crocodile-infested areas to take safety precautions.

"Try and avoid repetition, creating that pattern where they can learn that you're going to be down there at the pontoon fishing at the same time every day.

"Dispose of any of your fish frames and leftovers responsibly so that they're not left out as croc food."

'It has certainly been a saga': Sturgeon Point Marina opens for 2024 boating season

TOWN OF EVANS, N.Y. — A welcome sign that summer and the 2024 boating season is on the way, as boats launched into the newly renovated Sturgeon Point Marina for the first time this year.

“The marina is an important aspect of our community, it’s our jewel of the town,” Town of Evans supervisor Ray Ashton said.

Issues with the outer break wall have caused a rocky past four years for this staple in the Town of Evans.

In 2020 and 2021, a double punch of storm damage and the pandemic delayed the marina opening.

In 2023, The town made more major repairs to the wall, pushing the opening from early spring to late summer.

Ashton tells 7 News that grant money helped fix the marina, it just wasn’t a quick process.

“People may not understand, but when you get a grant, it’s not ‘you make a phone call and get the money,’” Ashton said. “You’re talking 2, 3, 4 years down the road. Everything that’s going on is from the past supervisor.”

Regardless, Ashton hopes Wednesday’s opening ushers in a new era with fewer delays.

“I think it looks pretty good, pretty great,” Ashton said.

Which is a welcome sight for the local business overlooking the marina, Connors Hot Dog Stand.

“To have the boat launching and have that traffic coming in is definitely going to help business,” Shannon Shepherd said.

Shepherd is the fourth generation of the Connors family.

The 80-year-old restaurant originally started in Angola-on-the-Lake.

Their second location at the marina has welcomed boaters since 1997, but Shepherd feels these past four years have just been a little bit different.

“It has certainly been a saga in the Town of Evans, it took multiple administrations to get this right, but they wanted to do this right with the DEC,” Shepherd said. “People are creatures of habit with their French fries, we didn’t suffer that greatly, but opening the marina this early in the season will only help us.”

Boats are already launching for the season.

Connors Hot Dogs on the marina will re-open on May 25.
